Salvation Army Commissioners Andy and Yvonne Westrupp, Territorial Leaders of the organisation’s operations in New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, are retiring after forty years service. The couple, who now live in Cortina Avenue in Johnsonville, have strong associations here, having “planted” the Johnsonville Corps in 1995. “We were privileged to stay in that job for ten years,” says Andy. “All four of our children went to Onslow College,” adds Yvonne. Faith and work the keynotes The two had met in Dunedin, with Andy finding support in a difficult life. “The army helped me and my family. Finding the army was like finding a glove that fitted my hand.” Yvonne, brought up in the army, found the call to become ordained with Andy not necessarily as comfortable. “I came to it over time,” she says. “I realised God was asking it of me.” Their service has notably included three years in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, travelling throughout those turbulent countries. The couple don’t claim that was easy. “But we had wonderful, wonderful times,” says Andy.

“The local people protected us, watched over us.” As well as their work in the Pacific, which has included overseeing the commencement of work in Samoa, since being called to New Zealand leadership they have often been to international meetings, “New York, London, Los Angeles, Taiwan, even Bali,” says Yvonne. Andy says the fast-moving and continuing development of relationships with Maori, “our treaty partner” is something they would have loved to have seen right through, but he is philosophical about it being the time to go. They will continue to do some part-time work with the army as well as enjoying their shared enthusiasm for mountain biking.

Gentle singers soothe residents During their latest visit to Enliven’s Huntleigh Home, The Whakaahuru Singers invited the residents to sit back and close their eyes while listening to their songs. The group is unique in that the singers don’t mind if audience members fall asleep during a performance, they actually take it as a compliment. The name Whakaahuru reflects the group’s gentle singing style, designed to soothe the listener. Whakaahuru visits Huntleigh Home in Karori about four times a year and is one of the few groups in New Zealand that specialises in singing to comfort people in palliative care. Enliven operations manager Suzanne Simpson says Enliven homes that provide hospital or palliative care – such as Huntleigh – develop specific activities programmes and individualised wellbeing plans for residents requiring that level of care. Whakaahuru is a part of that. “We encourage everyone to continue with their hobbies and interests once they move in, so that makes for a diverse social and activity calendar at the home!” Huntleigh Home provides both rest home and hospital level care so usually residents are aged over 65, but care can be provided for residents who are under 65.

Members of the Whakaahuru Singers sing to Huntleigh Home resident Joyce Moss and her husband Geoffrey. Photo supplied.

Huntleigh also runs a ‘forever 50s’ programme for the younger residents. The residents in this group can focus on their own hobbies, which may differ from the older residents. “It’s about continually adapting to meet the changing needs of our residents, whatever

E scooter injures woman By Glenise Dreaver

Inge Woolf, long-term resident of Wellington and the mother of local councillor Simon Woolf, had a truly momentous week at the end of October. First came a flight to Auckland for the 2019 Women of Influence awards held on Thursday October 24. As founding director of New Zealand’s National Holocaust Centre, Inge was a finalist in the Community Heroes section. She didn’t win but, she says, had a wonderful time meeting with some inspiring women. She flew back to Wellington on Wednesday October 30 with daughter Deborah Hart for Simon’s inauguration as a returning WCC councillor. But by Thursday afternoon, 85-year-old Inge found herself in an ambulance on the way to Wellington Hospital, with a badly gashed cheek and facing a series of scans to check for further damage. She had fallen over an e scooter lying side-

ways across the footpath at the intersection of Dixon and Egmont streets. “I just didn’t see it,” says Inge, adding that she was very lucky that nothing was broken. She was also very lucky, she says, to be surrounded by many wonderful people. There were quite a few students, “very caring” who stayed with her for a long time until the ambulance arrived. There was the shopkeeper who brought her a chair, but a woman, a trained health and safety officer who came to her aid immediately, would not let her move. “Exactly the right thing to do,” says Simon. “The doctor said moving mum could have caused real damage.” Then there was a young woman with a baby in a sling, with wet wipes to mop up the blood. “Imagine if it had been her with the baby in the front,” says Inge, adding that there should be stands for e scooters, as is the case in Melbourne. The charges should continue until they are

BBQ weather The MetService says there will be an improving weather trend towards the weekend, with barbeque weather forecast. MetService Meteorologist Andrew James explains: “Pohutukawa flowers are starting to come out in Auckland. Days are getting longer,” he says, advising people to clean their barbeque. A ridge of high pressure begins to move over the country from Wednesday, and conditions should be great for that Thursday evening barbeque. High pressure is set to stay around this weekend, with the exception of a front affecting Fiordland.

Pitbull injures again

Debbie Helson of Hindmarsh Street and her much loved pet James, a Shih Tzu, lived a nightmare in their home on Tuesday morning. James survived a vicious attack by Boss, a neighbour’s Pit Bull, which battered its way into their hallway, injuring both Debbie and her pet. James has had to be sent to Massey Unversity’s veterinary hospital in Palmerston North for specialist treatment, having four sets of pins in one of his legs, as well as stitches in deep wounds on his body. It was at about 11.20am (recorded on Debbie’s front door camera, though she can’t bear to watch the footage yet). James went out for his comfort stop, watched over by Debbie. Last year, he was injured in an attack by the same dog, so the minute she heard the yell “Boss!”, she acted. She grabbed James and ran inside, followed by the pit bull, but didn’t get the door fully shut. Boss hurled himself at it, knocking Debbie backwards and snatching James. She raced for the stairs. The camera shows his owner running into her house, where he lay on the floor, over his dog. He yelled for her, and Debbie came down, picked up her injured dog

Parliament Buildings, Wellington

and raced round the side of the house, “cowering” in a recess until they left she says. Debbie rang 111 – no luck. So she rang her friend Jodie Matthews who took her to the vet. They had to wait fifteen minutes for the vet to open and at that stage, Police did ring back. When she got home, Animal Control was next door, the Police in a back- up role. The animal has been taken away and Debbie desperately hopes it will be destroyed. “As it should have been after the first time,” she says, adding there have been a number of incidents with it in the neighbourhood. Debbie, dazed and traumatised, at first didn’t realise she

was injured. But by Wednesday midday, when she spoke to the Independent Herald on her way to the doctor, she was breathless, wincing with real pain and with several deep bruises. “I have a very, very sore leg,” she adds. James’ treatment will cost thousands of dollars, and Jodie is setting up a givealittle page. We’ll keep you posted

Many will remember the predictions of gloom down on the farm when agricultural subsidies were removed in the 1980s, but these resulted in NZ farmers becoming the most efficient in the world.

We marvel at New Zealanders’ ability to continually bat above our weight on the world stage; look at the international profile and respect afforded to our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

I’m proud to be part of a progressive government making essential if not universally popular changes which will keep us ahead of the rest of the world.

At a time when countries are retreating inside their borders and nationalism is on the rise, such a profile is invaluable to push New Zealand interests.

In contrast the National opposition have said they want us to be slow followers, not leaders. I’m afraid that’s just not in our DNA as Kiwis, and it will see us drop back into the ravenous pack following us.

But watching teachers and parents adapt and innovate when faced by the torrential rain that hit the St Brigid’s (Johnsonville) and Crofton Downs Schools recently just showed that our can-do attitude exists at every level of endeavour.

Recently I visited Free for All, a great local initiative that shares and re-homes unwanted items for free. They are on the hunt for a bigger space in the Johnsonville/ Newlands area. So if you know of anything please get Unit 2, 18 Moorefield Road, Johnsonville in touch with my office to On the McDonald’s roundabout pass on.

Crafts for Christmas at Churton Park Amesbury School Hall was transformed as the Churton Park Craft Market on Saturday November 16. Local crafter Lee Sheppard organised the event for the Churton Park Community Association, explaining that its aim was to encourage exposure and sales for local crafters and help support the Mary Potter Hospice. Lee was delighted with the range of high-quality products on offer, saying

this was the place where art and craft merged. There was jewellery, art, including face-painting and playthings, some collectable, some just to be loved. There were also edible treats, for people and for dogs. The stallholders were pleased with the steady stream of buyers , creating an early atmosphere of Christmas cheer. Stallholders donated raffle items from their range,

raising over $200 for the Mary Potter Hospice. People rebuilt their stamina for more shopping with the help of free afternoon tea from the Churton Park Anglican Church, Amesbury School’s sausage sizzle and a coffee cart selling espresso coffee. It was the Kiwi answer to a Christmas market, without the snow or mulled wine. Great fun and a winner for all.

Local artist selected for Police project By Glenise Dreaver

Makara-based artist and drawing tutor Helen Casey has had her art work selected to be digitally rendered on the hall walls of the Wellington Police holding cells. Helen is one of 15 artists selected for the project, the brainchild of Senior Sergeant Stu Taylforth. He says it is part of changing prisoner experience and supporting them to change their behaviours. The art competition theme was Awhi, which in Maori means to help and embrace. The name of Helen’s art work is Wairua Within, Wairua meaning ‘spirit’ she says. Intricately complex and detailed work is her speciality, influenced by Maori, Aboriginal and her own Celtic visual culture. She always wanted to be an illustrator and was fortunate, even before finishing her Wellington Polytechnic design course, to be invited to work for the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa “I was working in a bakery and a staff member came in. He asked me ‘Can you draw fish?’.” ‘How did they know I could do that?’ she thought, later realising it must have been word of mouth. She says her detailed scientific illustrations, “lots and lots of fish” have been used in the fishing quota guides which identify species and she has also worked for other fishing

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. What famous person, now or in history, would you like to invite to a BBQ?

Cassie McLuskie, Kelburn.

June Bezuidenhout, Newlands.

“Mary Wallstonecraft, 1759-97. She died far too young, but still wrote the first real women’s manifesto.”

“Kylie Jenner. She’s become powerful, independent. I love everything about her.”

Pippa Cubey Cubey, Makara. “Patricia Grace, the author. Te Potiki is my favourite book of hers.”

Helen Steadman-Powell,

Johnsonville

“It would be Camilla Demant, wife of Hans Demant. He who started the Demant Group for hearing.”

Stewart McDonald, Johnsonville “John Walker the runner and athlete.”

Taren Niblett, Johnsonville “The Rock because he’s pretty witty and funny. And you could have a deep conversation with him too.”

The same was true for a white Toyota Corolla parked overnight in Woodland Road and a green Honda Civic in Tralee Place. In Newlands a silver Ford Focus on the street overnight in Black Rock Road was broken into after a brick was used to smash the driver’s window and a key was stolen. A white Isuzu utility, also parked overnight in Black Rock Road was broken into and a socket set stolen. A white Nissan Primera saloon parked during the night in Batchelor Street was entered through a smashed window and an electric heater and a bag stolen. In Newlands Road, a flat under renovation was entered, probably by using a key hidden for tradesmen. Kitchen equipment, includ-

ing an oven and various tradies’ tools were stolen. In Wadestown a black Subaru parked locked overnight in a driveway was found next day propped up with the two front wheels missing. In Highbury a grey trailer parked on the street overnight was stolen, while on Highbury Crescent, a white Nissan Maxima saloon parked overnight in a carport, possibly unlocked, was entered. A spare tyre was taken from the boot and a pocket knife and some small change were taken from the glove box. In Northland a black moped fitted with a steering lock and parked during the day within a property in Randwick Road was stolen.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a grey Mitsubishi Triton utility vehicle parked overnight in the driveway of a house in Kipling Street was entered although there was no sign of forced entry. Nothing was reported stolen. A failed attempt was made to break into a green Toyota Vitz hatchback parked overnight in Kipling

Street, though the lock on the driver’s side door was badly damaged. Another vehicle parked overnight in Kipling Street, a wheelchair vehicle, a white Mercedes Benz Sprinter light van was entered and a Macbook computer, a mobility card, a bag and a university ID, and the garage door opener, were stolen.

Two hooded men were seen by the occupants of another Kipling Street house searching a Nissan Tida parked locked on their property. They were chased off, but a small sum in cash was stolen. A black Toyota Wish stationwagon parked unlocked overnight in the driveway of a house in Moorfield Road was entered and two

children’s seats were stolen. The glass in the front door of a house in Helston Road was smashed in daylight and the property untidily searched. Two TVs, two Play Stations, some jewellery items, a wifi modem, a quantity of shoes and two boxes of alcohol were stolen. A blue Daihatsu Charade parked locked on the road overnight in Cortina Avenue was stolen, while a silver Toyota Starlet parked overnight in the same street was broken into via a smashed window. A messy search was made but it is not yet known if anything was stolen. A green Nissan Sylphy parked overnight, also in Cortina Avenue, was entered through a smashed window, but nothing was reported stolen.

Theatre group celebrates 60 special years

Brett’s Brief National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu

We are well served by the men and women in Police working to help keep us safe in our homes and communities. Last week I joined Constables Jason Isaac and Kirill Tolkun on a ride-along in Ōhāriu. I’d like to thank them both for allowing me to join them and for the insights they shared with me over several hours. I’d also like to acknowledge and thank Police for approving the ride-along.

By Glenise Dreaver

Michelle Soper is looking forward to the Khandallah Arts Theatre’s 60th birthday celebrations this weekend. A long-standing member she recalls seeing, as a four or fiveyear-old, her very first pantomime. “It was Aladdin!” she says. Maybe it’s just a lucky coincidence that, on Friday November 22, at its celebrations, the club will be recreating Aladdin as a Participatory Pantomime. That means that members, past members and guests – and anyone who is interested - can take part, just for fun and without needing a rehearsal. “We always welcome new people,” says Michelle. Some of the tricky gags are being rehearsed, she adds. And there will be a little bit of canned music to add to the atmosphere. There will also be a cake, drinks, nibbles, a display of the posters of all KAT productions since the 50th

birthday celebration, with time for reminiscing. Michelle, who in her other life is an IT manager with the NZ Police, joined in 1987 just as she was starting Queen Mary College. Having been taken to see the The Diary of Ann Frank in 1983? and The Hobbit in 1986, she says she then reached the stage of thinking: “Let me at it!’.” The family tradition continues with her husband ?? name? and two teenage boys Aidan and Luke,

involved. “Luke, especially, has the bug,” she says. The club has done this sort of relaxed participatory work before and it is, says Michelle, a lot of fun. Those who get up on stage revel in hamming it up and those who just want to watch find their antics just as funny as the scripted gags. KAT’s 60th birthday and participatory pantomime will be held on Friday November 22 at 7.30pm at Cochran Hall.

It wouldn’t be appropriate to give details of the jobs attended (although there was an unanticipated arrest early in the piece.) It was certainly something of an eye-opener in terms of Police operations and the impact of paperwork, as necessary as it may be, on the time officers are able to spend out in the community. The communication skills and judgement the officers displayed should give us all great heart. Their ability to deal with a range of people

across a number of challenging circumstances is a testament to both their character and the training they receive. Likewise, the considerations they made and judgement they exercised in determining what actions to take were impressive. We are in good hands and Police are worthy of the support of both the public and Government to help them do their jobs better. A major issue in policing in Wellington and across New Zealand is mental health. It’s so important that we get issues around mental health right. That is why the National-led Government supported having mental health professionals in Police watch houses and introduced policies to have mental health workers involved in responding to incidents alongside Police officers. These were important programmes, both cut under this Government. We need to do better to support Police and our communities.

Robert’s experience... My wife Sharon and I can go out together with ease as it only takes her a few seconds to load the Freedom Chair into the car. With a previous chair we used to need to find parking where we had the space to install ramps. In late July 2017 Sharon and I travelled to Germany to see the kids and we included the Freedom Chair. It made the trip so easy. The Freedom Chair has given me my life back!

Make yourself Safer

World Antibiotic Awareness Week The Ministry of Health is reminding New Zealanders that we all contribute to antibiotic resistance and we can all do something to help combat it. The Ministry has been collaborating with other organisations including the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Health Quality & Safety Commission (HQSC), PHARMAC and the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. They are working together to help raise awareness of this important issue and remind people that we can all help keep antibiotics working. The Ministry encourage New Zealanders to take advantage of the ‘Antibiotic Amnesty’ which will be promoted in participating pharmacies from 18 November through until the end of the year, with the support of

the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. “Antibiotics are essential for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals. Antibiotic resistance stops an antibiotic from working effectively against bacteria. It makes infections difficult, and sometimes impossible to treat,” says Dr Ian Town, The Ministry of Health’s Chief Science Advisor. “The more antibiotics are used, the more bacteria are able to adapt and find new ways to survive, becoming ‘resistant’ to antibiotics. These resistant bacteria can spread between people and are very difficult and expensive to treat. Preventing infections and their spread helps stop antibiotic resistance by reducing the need for antibiotics.

and more

“There are few new antibiotics in development, so we need to protect the antibiotics we have to ensure these life-saving medicines remain effective in the future. “Without them we may face a situation where cancer treatments, organ transplants and other medical procedures are no longer possible, as they rely on antibiotics to manage the risk of infection. “There are a range of simple actions the public can take to help keep antibiotics working. This includes regular hand washing, keeping up to date with vaccinations, taking care when cooking to avoid getting food poisoning and trusting their health professional if they’re advised that they don’t need antibiotics,” says Dr Ian Town.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Southee’s career heading south? Call it the eye test but Tim Southee looks like a shell of himself. At his peak, he was one of New Zealand’s best pace bowlers of all time. Today he looks lost, he lacks command and cannot seem to hold up his end of the deal. Somehow he is still the squad’s vice captain but at 30-years-old

he looks like his best days are behind him. I was at Westpac Stadium for the group stage game against Wellington at the 2015 World Cup and he was majestic. His line and length was immaculate and he was able to get the ball to swing through the air and move off the pitch as he took

7 for 33. Today he just looks unenthused. He was not able to produce during the super over against England earlier this summer when he captained the Black Caps in the series. He did not play in the World Cup final earlier this year and while he’s formed a potent part-

nership with Trent Boult in tests for a number of years, he may be on borrowed time. The team will try Lockie Ferguson in the upcoming English test series next week and he may be the long-term replacement for Southee in coming seasons. He needs to reinvent himself and find a way to stay in a team

he clearly loves. Can time with Shane Bond help him? It’s a big if but even the most ardent fan must admit that Southee has not been the dynamic player the team needs for the past four years and it’s been a lack of depth which has prevented him from losing the test spot.

The Johnsonville School mini-triathlon is an annual event for primary school children Years 1-6. The event, held on Saturday November 9, is in its third year and provides children with the opportunity to have a go at a triathlon event (swim, bike and run) in a fun and safe environment. While the event is organised by Johnsonville school, it has a community-wide focus with the triathlon open to competitors from other schools. Ninety seven primary school children from 13 local schools competed. The spirit of the event was captured by a Year 6 boy arriving on the day with his father to enter, but without a bike. Thanks to the generosity of another child competing before him, he was able to borrow a bike and give a triathlon a go for the first time. It is the third year Johnsonville School has run the event and it was the most successful year yet thanks to sponsorship from William YIP - Team YIP Harcourts Johnsonville Real Estate and Easyswim Swim School. A number of local businesses provided their support with small spot prizes to reward the children for their great efforts. Parents, teachers and volunteers all helped make this event, with its focus on fun, having a go and trying your best, a Olive McAndrew, Year 2 at Johnsonville school, on the bike leg of the huge success. school's triathlon.
