Peace.

It is a word that we take for granted in New Zealand, but one that took unprecedented gravitas when a group of international runners on Monday delivered to Parliament a torch representing just that.

In a case of extraordinary timing, members of the Sri Chinmoy Peace Run arrived in Wellington on Sunday, two days after at least 100 people were shot, half of them killed, by a crazed gunman at two mosques in Christchurch.

The Global Peace Run is named after its late founder who was dedicated to advancing the ideals of world friendship and oneness.

Its team of nine runners ran into the Parliament grounds on Monday as part of a 2700km relay that involves visiting more than 20 towns and cities through the length of New Zealand.

One of the runners on the day was Muslim Badami of Newtown, representing his birth country of India.

“We basically run with a flaming torch. It’s a relay and the idea is we meet community and civic leaders and pass on the message on universal oneness and brotherhood,” Muslim says.

“The main motto is ‘peace begins with me’ and if we can have peace within our own thoughts and actions then that peace will kind of spread from us to others.”

This year the Peace Run is touring all 44 countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

Runners in the relay from Eastern Europe, Australia and

the US were visiting New Zealand specifically for the relay.

New Zealand also had a representative, Preetidutta Thorpe of Auckland.

“It started in Cape Reinga in January. After we reach Stewart Island one of the guys will then take it on a plane to Samoa or Tonga.”

Muslim says the mood was “incredible” when people saw the runners on the waterfront on Sunday and realised what they were about.

“They initially did think it was about the terrorist attacks but then realised it was coincidence and that gave them hope. Everybody’s been saying we need to do it more.”

The team were told about Sunday’s vigil and subsequently attended.

“Our hearts go out to the Muslim community in Christchurch and around the world.”

At midday Monday they met MPs Marama Davidson and Priyanca Radhakrichnan, as well as city councillor Andy Foster who happened to be jogging in the area, to present the torch as a symbolic gesture.

Marama said she couldn’t believe how timely an event such as this was.

“There is nothing more important than working together for peace.

“We know we have to seek peace throughout the many activities in our daily lives,

whether that’s in our schools by making sure we are teaching our young citizens the full span of our histories, whether it is making sure our media and politicians are held to account for speaking in a way that goes against peace.

“We have a lot of work to do.”

The attacks on the Muslim community in Ch ristchurch show that now is the time for everyone from all ethnicities and religions to come together.

The ARCC provides support to new residents, former refugee communities and

humanitarian migrants in the Auckland region and is helping community members affected by this tragedy.

“These were cowardly acts targeting people attending Friday prayers in a country that respects their right to practice their religion. New

Wellington unites in grief

Berhampore Village drop-in session

New Zealand’s “darkest day” was acknowledged by a crowd of more than 10,000 at the Basin Reserve on Sunday evening.

The unprecedented turnout revealed the scale of just how much grief Wellingtonians had felt, as well as the compassion they showed towards the Muslim community in reaction to the unthinkable act of terrorism that had been unleashed on two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

The weather conditions were remarkably still and peaceful, appropriate for the sombreness of the occasion.

People continued to funnel in through the Basin’s narrow gateway after the vigil began at 6pm. Hundreds patiently waited along the median strip between Kent and Cambridge terraces as police kept watch over proceedings, some carrying semi-automatic firearms – a sight rarely seen at public events in New Zealand.

Several dignitaries spoke, including Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy, who all emphasised the need to show love, kindness and tolerance of each other during this terrible time.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester told the crowd they were here to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Muslim community.

“If one person can harbour so much hate, then 4.5 million New Zealanders can overwhelm them with love. This country belongs to all of us.

“The cowardly acts they have had to endure are shameful and despicable. Our Muslim community has responded with dignity, grace and a level of compassion in stark contrast to the pain they have had to endure.”

The crowd also cheered when a representative from Peace Action Wellington demanded police and intelligence agen-

cies refocus their surveillance on the underbelly of white supremacy instead of on mosques and activists. He also called for the Government’s refugee quota to be tripled.

The event was organised by Wellington City Council in partnership with Wellington Interfaith Council, the Welling-

ton Multicultural Council and ChangeMakers Resettlement the Forum.

It had originally been planned to be held at Te Ngakau Civic Square but was moved after organisers agreed the capacity would be nowhere near enough for the expected crowd that would turn out.

Wellington continues to be one of the strongest movers of national house prices, with the median sale price increasing by 9.2 percent to $638,750, according to the latest Property Institute/Valocity Regional Insights Report.

Wellington’s public housing is set to get a major boost with Housing New Zealand and Wellington City Council proposing a partnership agreement for the government agency to take a long-term lease of the city’s Arlington complex.

Subject to public consultation, Housing New Zealand will develop between 230 and 300 homes on the site in Mt Cook, which will include up to 40 supported-living units for Wellington’s most vulnerable homeless people.

The proposal will be on the agenda for next week’s meeting of the Council’s City Strategy Committee.

“This will make a significant difference for Wellington housing,” says Wellington Mayor Justin Lester.

GWRC considers 6.5pc rates rise Greater Wellington Regional Council is proposing a rates rise of 6.5 percent for 2019-20 to fund investment in priority areas previously set out in its Long Term Plan 2018-28.

The proposed rates increase equates to 97c per week for the average residential ratepayer and is 0.6 percent higher than forecast in the Long Term Plan.

Actual rates will vary by region based on residential and commercial property valuation.

The proposed increase is needed to cover Greater Wellington’s capital investment programme, such as property acquisition and investment in rail and bus assets.

School shows its solidarity for victims

Students from Evans Bay Intermediate School were among the millions of New Zealanders who gave their hearts to the victims of the Christchurch shootings in their own special way on Monday.

Kilbirnie Mosque Imam Tahir Nawaz and supporter David Blocksidge attended a special assembly where they were given the warmest of welcomes from school students and staff.

A karakia was held, followed by the singing of the national anthem. After a minute’s silence, staff comforted the grieving assembly with a poem, and a recital of Amazing Grace.

Tahir and David acknowledged the “really respectful” way the school expressed its condolences, describing the singing as “beautiful”.

Students who spoke to the Cook Strait News afterwards say the terror attack had overwhelmed them with sadness.

“I’m devastated. How could a man just do that?” Tukaiora Arahanga says. “It’s just like the KKK. I’m not surprised

“I didn’t want to go out of my house because of what’s been happening in my country,” Kyra Glancy says.

The fact the massacre had been live-streamed has had a profound effect on some of the students. Tukairoa says he will

no longer play Fortnite, a video game extremely popular with children, because “what’s the difference between what you do in that and what’s happened?”

In a chilling reminder of how social media has no safeguards for preventing livestreams going viral, Kyra reveals her seven-year-old sister had inadvertently been

exposed to an upload of the massacre on Youtube.

“It turned up on her account playlist while she was watching other videos.”

Students from the school and others in the eastern suburbs have throughout the week visited the Kilbirnie Mosque to pay their respects with floral tributes.

Victim Support has now received over $ 6 million through its online Givealittle campaign, launched in support of victims affected by Friday’s shootings in Christchurch.

“This is an unprecedented fundraising response to an unprecedented tragedy in New Zealand and we thank everybody who has donated,” says Victim Support Chief Executive Kevin Tso. “The amount we have raised is overwhelming and reflects

the tragedy’s widespread ripple effect and the human desire to help others in need.

“New Zealand and the world are in mourning.”

Donations had been received from all over New Zealand and overseas including Australia, Canada, the United K ingdom, United States, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia and the Maldives.

Kevin acknowledged questions received from some

members of the public via Givealittle about how the funds would be used. He confirmed that the funds would not be used to cover any of the organisation’s regular operating costs.

“We have begun making emergency payments to victims on an as-required basis, respecting cultural advice and considerations at each step.

“We understand the distress that is being widely felt in the aftermath of these attacks. We

encourage people to check on their friends and families, talk with and support one other, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

The public outpouring of grief for the Muslim community has been extended to Kilbirnie Mosque, with a massive floral tribute accumulating by the day.

The mosque was reopened to the

public on Monday, albeit with an armed police officer on guard outside.

There were also many cards of condolence and solidarity delivered and on display outside the mosque’s entrance, many including the hashtag TheyAreUs.

Two e-scooter companies selected for Wellington trial

City library closes indefinitely The Wellington City Council on Tuesday announced the closure of the central library indefinitely due to earthquake risk.

“Safety is our number one priority,” chief executive Kevin Lavery says.

The closure, effective from Tuesday night, comes after the Council received a final report from a team of engineers it had commissioned to review new guidance from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). The engineers have raised concerns about the building in the event of a significant earthquake.

“Based on the information we have this is the only decision we can make. This is about public safety,” Mayor Justin Lester says.

“The Wellington Central Library is no ordinary CBD building. It is one of the city’s busiest buildings with 3,000 visitors a day, including 500 children. The safety of our residents is paramount.

“We will be making every effort to ensure that library services will be back in action as we know how crucial they are to the city

and how disruptive this will be.

“For me, the library is the living room of our city and I understand how disappointed Wellingtonians will be to have a cherished and much-loved venue close. It pains me too.

“We will do our very best to operate temporary facilities and to make the investments we need to make the Central Library building safe for Wellingtonians.”

The expectation is that there will not be job losses as a result of this closure.

The Council is developing different ways to offer alternative library services including making use of their branch network, digital services and other offerings in the City. This won’t happen today so in the meantime members can continue to access library services via other libraries and websites.

For ease, all items currently on loan from Central Library will be renewed and fees suspended for returning items to other branches.

Wellington City Council has selected two companies to roll out the trial of the city’s first electric scooter share scheme.

Licences will be given to locally-owned start-up company Flamingo and to Jump, which is owned and operated by Uber.

The two companies were selected following an evaluation of all of the five operators who submitted proposals. The selection process included an independent evaluator.

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester says the trial will help the Council to determine the city’s policy around micro-mobility transport, which includes e-scooters and bike share schemes.

“As in other cities, transport is continuing to evolve. We want to make sure people have easy access to different ways of getting around – whether they’re just travelling across town or commuting to work. The e-scooter trial means we can test the demand, how e-scooters fit in the context of Wellington, and rider behaviour.”

Council officers are developing a code of practice, based on independent advice, that

will guide the practical and safe implementation of the trial, including any restrictions on how and where people can ride.

A start date has not yet been decided but is likely to be towards mid-2019 – licences can be issued once the code of practice has been finalised. The trial will initially last six months, but can be extended by 12 months to allow time for consultation and policy engagement.

Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman, Portfolio Leader for Transport Strategy, says a trial gives the Council more control over how e-scooters are rolled out across the city.

“The best chance to manage outcomes is likely to be through the licensing of commercial operators so people are less inclined to buy their own scooter over which we have no control.

“We’ll be monitoring the trial closely, with a particular focus on pedestrian and user safety.”

Councillors on the City Strategy Committee voted in favour of the trial in February.

Historic win for Miramar Bowling Club The Miramar Bowling club has had an amazing season, one that has proved to be a remarkable period in the history of the club.

The Bowls Wellington Men’s Interclub Premier Reserve grade had three sections, two of which

were won by Miramar teams.

This feat has never been achieved before. In the play-off at the Island Bay club, Miramar 3 beat their club mates Miramar 2 and then went on to beat the previously unbeaten Naenae side to take the

title for 2019.

The vocal Miramar club supporters certainly helped urging their teams on to victory in a tense and exciting play off.

Round One saw Miramar 2 play Miramar 3 and although a

close encounter, Miramar 3 won through with three wins, each with a bonus point. In Round Two Miramar 2 played Naenae in a closer competition and gained two wins thus making Round Three a match where Miramar 3 had to

Naenae was gaining in confidence but Miramar’s players gradually placed their bowls closer to the jack.

Just one win was needed and in an epic encounter the pairs did that and with Miramar becoming the Premier Reserve champions it qualified for the promotion/relegation games to be held on Saturday, March 23.

Miramar has the opportunity to create even more history by being one of the top two teams in this play-off and qualify for the Premier competition.

The Miramar 3 winning team included Rob Veale in the Singles; Brent Stubbins and Keith Hastings in the Pairs; and Wayne Coleman, Ian McLeod, Dave Shedlock and Hughie Galbraith in the Fours.

Miramar 2, which finished runner-up included Mike Andrews in the Singles; Dennis Mann and David Allen in the Pairs; and Carl Northcott, Jaime Reporama, Greg O’Connor and Mark Poynter in the Fours.

Airport pride rainbow nothing but toxic nonsense Dear Editor, How much has the latest rainbow nonsense cost the ratepayer? How much paint has been used to cover the 3000 square metre pride runway? I noticed it was already being repainted last Tuesday.

Many roads simply need modification Dear Editor, During WW2, the Royal Navy began “operations research” because existing equipment needed to be better used. I wonder if our City Council needs to do the same.

Many roads might work better with simple modifications.

In Hataitai lights have been proposed instead of cleaning up a clutter of signs and markings confusing the motorist.

Some markings may be required according to NZTA, but Council was happy to defy them over the Rainbow crossing, so it could do so again.

At the intersection of Kilbirnie Crescent and Wellington Road, northbound buses are sometimes held up by cars turning right towards Cobham Drive. A dedicated right turn lane (there’s enough space), would improve the flow.

Your readers will probably think of many examples where simple changes would pay off.

Is the Council too focussed on new stuff and not attending enough to make better use of what we already have?

Massive turnout as students strike for climate

The tragedy in Christchurch on Friday afternoon had completely diverted media coverage of what was supposed to be one of the biggest events of the year.

The Strike 4 Climate took place around the country that morning, with tens of thousands of young people, including some in school uniform, turning out in many of the country’s towns and cities to protest what they say is lack of action by the Government on climate change.

The march began in Civic Square and the sight of so many people rallying down the Golden Mile was unprecedented.

Organiser Raven Maeder, a Victorian University student, was the first to speak when the enormous crowd converged at Parliament.

“We have thrown everything we have into the last month, because I truly believe this is the most important thing I can do with my time right now.

“There is nothing more important right now than lifting up the young voices that have been left out of this conversation for too long and telling them that they are important, that they matter, that they are not too small to make a

difference.

“I pledge to you all today that I will always back these amazing young leaders today. I will never fight this issue until we live in a society where young people don’t have to fight for their future.”

Another organiser, Wellington High School student Molly Doyle, says contrary to what some may have thought the strike was about endorsing education.

“School has become invaluable to me, it’s taught me how to speak and more so, how to listen -- and I don’t want to be away from that.

I do not want to miss school, but I have to,” she said. “We are here because we have to be.

“Our voices don’t just deserve to be heard but they need to be. Truly, any hope we have of survival rests on our shoulders and in our voices.

“This is not a fight, not a debate that we can spend 12 years talking about.

“I call on the youth, I plea to you, to keep this fight up because the second that we don’t is the moment that reverses us; reverses our country into an unsaveable situation.”

Afterwards Molly told the Cook Strait News she was hopeful that the government will listen to them to see what they want to be done.

Ignorance is appalling Dear Editor; I wa s h ig h ly chu f fe d by the illustrated article (CSN March 14) about Val Townsend of the Miramar Sallies’ Toy Library; because I often see her at the drop-ins on Thursdays: my idea of a decent Christian woman. All the same, I wish they, together with countless other people nowadays, would learn that 12.00 noon (midday) is not 12.00 pm, which is midnight.

As well, there is no such thing as 12.00 am, which term is often ignorantly used for 12.00 midnight.

The woeful ignorance, now, among supposedly educated people, is appalling. For instance, we often encounter people who have graduated from university, even with am earned PhD, over the last 40 years, who don’t know a lot of things which were common knowledge, in the 1940s and 1950s, among children in what are now called Years 6, 7, and 8 at primary-intermediate level.

Another instance is Roman figures, still often used for clock-dials as an alternative.

Youngsters did at least learn

those used for some clocks; and later, would often learn those for higher numbers.

And about 30 years ago, there were people who said we were nearing the end of the 19th Century. On top of that, one thinks of the saying, “There’s one thing worse than ignorance; and that’s knowin’ what ain’t so.” Youngsters have been taught complete fictions as allegedly proved facts, and have believed them to be true.

Seniors stand aside and let 12-yearolds vote Dear Editor, With the recent interest is prisoner and deserting kiwi’s voting rights it behoves us to look at who should elect our representatives.

With, presently, the students taking public action to remind us to take care of the (our/ their) environment, we should consider their interests.

Who better than those who will be most affected. If a child of 12 can be tried in Court for a serious crime, surely a person of that age

should be able to vote.

I recommend that NZ set the voting age at reaching 12 years of age.

These persons have a lot of common sense, sound reasoning and intuition. If they personally feel they are not ready they can decide not to go to the booth as many other non-participants in the country, while on the role, do not go, nor have to go, to the polling booth at election time.

The numbers of the voters on the role could be reduced by deleting the older ones

who have done (or not done) their dash. I, at 83 would be happy to stand aside for 12 year olds onward.

Another good test would be to tie the voting rights with the pension; anyone at 65 can decide to keep on working and voting, or retire and get the fortnightly pension in exchange for your entitlement to select your Local or National representative.

Viva la teenager, our future.

I question the figures that Sarah Free quoted (CSN, March 14) as to the increase of cyclists from May 66,000 to January 123,000. Does this include the whole of New Zealand? How on

earth can you quote these figures without more detail? Who and where are the counters in Wellington? Do they think of a number and triple it?

This becomes fake news unless it can be backed up in the original article.

Crawford Rd roundabout too small Dear Editor, The roundabout at the junction of Crawford Road to Constable Street including Alexander Road .The communal wheels from Ruahine Street and Wellington Road are confronted by an artless, static obstructive centre piece, around which we all gyrate to a small-minded traffic hindrance

Malfunctioning Snapper gives me grief Dear Editor, I’d be interested to know if anyone else is having the same trouble as I’m having with the Snapper terminals. In just a couple of months I’ve had to ring them three times because they keep deducting too much money and saying penalty when I’ve done everything right – snapped on and off. I feel like

snapping the whole device off.

I’ve been left with no choice as they have phased the blue cards out and my brother has to have the Snapper combined with his mobility card; another example of how good computers are – not.

Thai students encouraged to experience Kiwi way of life

There was a more positive atmosphere at Evans Bay Intermediate before the tragic events that unfolded on Friday.

That morning a contingent of students from Thailand arrived at the school for a three-week buddy scheme as part of an International Student programme run in conjunction with Rongotai College.

They were given a typical Kiwi welcome with a powhiri, waiata and haka from the students in the assembly hall.

Deputy Principal Wikus Swanepoel told the Thai students New Zealand is a country of many cultures.

“We want people to come here and experience our beautiful country. We welcome everybody. We hope you will enjoy your three weeks with us.

“Learn about the kiwi, the haka, the All Blacks, the culture

and language.

“Teach us about Thailand, your culture, the food you eat. You are now part of the family.”

International Student liaison teacher Robina Dean says the school has a department dedicated to ESOL support.

“They are all from the same school. Some speak English but three or four really struggle.”

She and ESOL teacher Robyn Yudana say that is the reason why the school’s buddy system is so important, as several EBIS students are proficient in the Thai language.

“We have some Thai students who help with translations. They have been fantastic,” Robyn says.

“It’s a chance for the Thai kids to take up leadership roles.”

She says feedback has been positive since Friday with many EBIS students keen to visit Thailand after learning about the visiting students’ experiences in that country.

Mural planned to solve problem of tagged wall

The Newtown Neighbours’ Night on March 29 will come with an extra incentive for the public keen to do some good in their neighbourhood.

Kia Ora Newtown Community Liaison Officer Jared Corston says as well as being an opportunity for Newtown’s people to get to know each other, the Neighbour’s Night will be a chance to discuss ideas for a mural to go on a wall.

“We’re inviting members of the community to design it and paint it.

“The Bloom Collective will also be involved and hopefully Bunnings will provide the materials,” Jared says.

“We will use three or four panels to paint the design on then attach them to the wall.”

The wall used to hold a display for advertising the apartments but it has since been pulled down leaving it blank and vulnerable to graffiti.

It has since been painted over but it is only a matter of time before it is completely tagged again.

Jared believes having a mural on the wall that reflects the local community will prevent it from further vandalism.

He says an artist, Jesse Mullen, is keen to volunteer his time and skills to creating an artwork, and possibly others.

Roseneath comes together for revamped association

Roseneath residents held a pot luck lunch at Roseneath Primary School on Sunday, labelling the event a rejuvenation effort of the historic Roseneath Residents Association.

The event which had a bouncy castle saw a turn-out of close to 60 residents and their children.

Plus, one dog.

“The time is right to rejuvenate the association,” said unofficial association chair and event organiser Sean Rush.

Sean envisioned the rejuvenated association would act as an advocacy group for Roseneath residents.

He expressed his concerns that more commuter traffic was being funnelled through the narrow streets of the suburb.

He alluded that the traffic woes might have something do with the lack of development on the Mount Victoria tunnel.

He also wants to launch a Roseneath predator-free programme, have more robust

civil defence plans and training in place, and to hold more community events.

Sean moved into Roseneath five years ago and has since made contact with fellow resident Don Bagnall.

Don has been a member of the residents association for 40 years, and has lived in Roseneath for 50 years.

To date Don is nearly all that remains of the Roseneath Residents Association which has existed in some shape or form since the 1920s.

Don was pleased with the turnout at the event on Sunday and said it reminded him of the first Residents Association meeting he attended 40 years ago.

He hopes that Roseneath would rekindle its community spirit.

Don also said there needs to be more focus put into Civil Defence planning for the community.

He too is concerned with the increase in traffic through the suburb for safety reasons.

Residents’ parking could come to Newtown City Strategy Committee has agreed to take active steps to develop options to address the provision of parking in Newtown.

The resolution passed at the meeting on March 14 during deliberations on the Draft Annual Plan.

Significant debate was made that officers ensure that active efforts were made to consult with residents in Newtown about the possible introduction of residents’ parking and other options to assist in addressing

high demand for parking in Newtown.

It was moved by councillors Fleur Fitzsimons and David Lee and all councillors agreed apart from councillor Iona Pannett, who nonetheless agreed with the sentiment.

Fleur says residents have been raising concerns with her for some time about increasing pressure on car parking in Newtown.

“They tell me this has come about because of construction

work at the hospital and well as more people living and working in Newtown.

“It is clear to me that there will be more pressure on car parking as the Southern Connections cycleway project is further developed and when decisions are made about the investment through Let’s Get Welly Moving.

“All of these factors require a more active approach to addressing concerns about car parking in Newtown,” Fleur says.

“We need to discuss with

residents what their experience of parking in Newtown is and whether Residents Parking similar to that in Colombo Street should be introduced in other parts of Newtown.

“I appreciate that the introduction of Residents Parking is not a silver bullet, it will not solve all the parking problems but this decision is about the Council being proactive in discussing car parking in Newtown.”

She says the resolution will result in a comprehensive analysis

of car parking in Newtown by the Council as well as active discussion with the community about their experiences of parking in Newtown and how to solve problems identified.

The pupils of Ridgway School are helping parents and teachers prepare for its annual fair this Sunday, with the aim of raising funds to make their property a little safer.

They have been filling jars with a range of small items such as toys, lollies and crayons their families have donated. The jars will go on sale as part of fundraising efforts to upgrade the path that leads to the neighbouring sports field.

“They will be jars of fun.

You pay some money then you get the jar but it’s a surprise as you don’t know what’s in it beforehand,” pupil Emily Taylor, 6, says.

Deputy principal Sarah Taylor says last yea r’s completion of a bike track around Vogelmorn Park has become a great asset to the school, but access remains a concern.

“We have got an amazing

new bike track but to get to the bottom is a bit treacherous,” she says.

A n inspection of t he footpath shows it zigzags and is quite narrow, with some of the adjacent mesh fence damaged by people climbing over it.

“Our 2019 goal is to improve the zig-zag access to the field by replacing the current wire fence with a much safer wooden fence, as well as completely landscaping around the edges.”

The event will feature kapa haka, pony rides, global food, live bands, bike lessons, bouncy castle, face-painting, silent auction and children’s games.

Crusaders’ name must go on Sport barely matters after the tragedy which happened in Christchurch on Friday.

Quite rightly, a host of sport and community events were cancelled as a mark of respect to the victims and those affected.

Included in that was the cancelled Super Rugby game between the Highlanders and Crusaders in Dunedin.

It didn’t take long for media organisation, Stuff, on the back of social media, to write a column questioning whether what happened

on Friday meant the Crusaders’ name needed a serious rethink.

The column, which ran without a byline — surprise, surprise — had a largely negative response from people on Facebook.

The tragedy will mean that our way of life will be questioned, laws will be changed but to alter the name of one of New Zealand’s most successful sports teams because of one disgraceful individual and his acts, is knee-jerk and an outcome of raw emotion spilling over.

On Sunday night, the Crusaders released a statement acknowledging the chatter saying “For us, the name is a reflection of the crusading spirit of this community.

“What we stand for is the opposite of what happened in Christchurch on Friday - our crusade is one for peace, unity, inclusiveness and community spirit.”

It is so easy to over-analyse situations and this is one of them.

If people are offended by the Crusaders’ name, they should also

be offended by the Highlanders and Chiefs, who could all be part of bloodshed, while Hurricanes kill people every year and a line could be drawn to the Blues as a name with gang affiliations.

The point being, in 2019, it’s a stretch to make the argument at best.

It is another sad occurrence for Christchurch but there is no indication the name of the most successful Super Rugby franchise ever had anything to do with this.

The name has been in existence

since 1996.

Plenty of professional sports teams have names meant purely to be intimidating purely from a sporting sense.

The Brisbane Bullets basketball team, the San Jose Sharks ice hockey team and Essendon Bombers in Aussie Rules all come to mind as potentially contentious names which remain and have stood the test of time.

Let’s learn from this horrific outcome, but let’s not overreact to matters of sport.

Double signing strengthens champion Diamonds Wellington United Diamonds, the 2018 W-League and Kelly Cup champions, have moved to strengthen their squad for the 2019 season with the signing of forward Emma Main from Upper Hutt City and defender Sophie Dijkstra from Dunedin Technical.

Emma Main has been a long-admired foe of Wellington United, playing her entire career with rivals Upper Hutt City, where she has scored an outstanding 90 goals in 66 appearances, helping them win the W-League once and the Kelly Cup twice.

Emma has also made 26 appearances for Capital Football in the National League and represented New Zealand at both U17 and U20 level.

“Emma’s pedigree speaks for herself.

She brings heaps of experience to our family. Everyone at United is very pleased to have Emma with us,” coach Guillermo Shiltenwolf said.

Sophie Dijkstra is also known to Wellington United, being a member of the Dunedin Technical side that knocked Diamonds out of the Kate Sheppard Cup at the semi-final stage last season on their way to winning the trophy.

Hailing from Dunedin, Sophie has played her career with Dunedin Technical as well as playing National League with Southern United.

“Sophie is a new player coming from Dunedin Technical, she is adjusting to our playing philosophy,” Guillermo

says. “From what I’ve seen from her, she is an exciting player with lots to offer. We welcome Sophie to the United family.”

Emma cites the quality of coaching and competitive nature of the team as reasons why she opted to sign for Wellington United.

Sophie says that after playing against United in the Kate Sheppard Cup last season it was clear that it was a close team with a great family vibe that she wanted to be part of and that made them the obvious choice when she moved to Wellington for University.

Wellington United Diamonds kicked off their season on Saturday with a Kelly Cup game against Wairarapa United at Maidstone Park in Upper Hutt.
