Poppy Pride

A group of Churton Park crafters have played a crucial role in a national Anzac Day fundraiser.

The group of 20 crafters created more than 250 knitted poppies and stars in

support of the The Poppy Star Flight which was in the capital late last week.

Group coordinator Cheryl Brownrigg says after almost 12 months in the making and waiting, it was great to be part of it.

Anzac spirit soars amongst Churton Park Crafters “It was great, it was very satisfying to take the poppies we created last year and be able to contribute to the banners being created.”

The event was postponed during the Coronavirus lockdown last year but the month long event has proved popular across New Zealand.

Each day for more than a month, 34 volunteer pilots will carry a knitted poppy and star on their flight sector, with the town of arrival hosting a welcome party where the local communities and schools can get involved with fundraising at a fun and educational event.

Poppies and stars are added to the original small pieces of artwork so that they grow on the way round, showing nationwide support for the charities.

The finished Poppy and Star will be presented along with the donations on ANZAC Day. The collective fundraising will help The RSA and The Starship

Foundation continue to provide the care needed in many areas. The Poppy & Star Flight will also help keep our aviation history alive through the NZ Warbirds Association, without whom the flight would not be possible.

Cheryl says the Churton Park Crafters contribute knitted items throughout the community but are now working closely with Kiwi Community Assistance.

“As a group we like to knit, crochet or do embroidery.

“Many of us who have older grandchildren who no longer want to wear knitted items but we still like to contribute wherever we can.

“We have members from all over the Northern suburbs and each Monday we really look forward to catching up,” she says.

“It was great that we were able to do our bit for the Poppy Flight and we were delighted we did not have to wait another year.

Keith Spry Main Pool closure extension The main pool closure at Keith Spry Pool has been extended until August as the project faces COVID-19 delays with a shortage of building supplies coming into New Zealand, specifically the structural steel needed for the ceiling work.

Thorndon Pool will continue to stay open with reduced hours for the duration of the extended Keith Spry main pool closure, with impacted SwimWell lessons being accommodated at Tawa Pool from term two on a modified timetable.

April hours at Thorndon Pool are 11am-7pm Monday to Sunday, and from May to August 10am-6pm Monday to Sunday.

The project is split into three phases, over nine months:

Stage one: September - October (Completed) s All pools remain open s Refurbishment of Level one staff area Stage two: 14 December -August s Main pool will be closed s Works above spa, sauna and reception area to the ceiling and timber beams s Works to replace the skylight and install a new acoustic ceiling s Paint to brighten things up s Overall, the structural work will bring the building’s earthquake resilience to 70% NBS - which is a great investment for the future.

Voting opens for Tawa Community Board by-election Enrolled voters in the Tawa region will be able to have their say in selecting a new member for the Tawa Community Board.

Voting for the Tawa Community Board by-election will run until May 7.

“Voting papers with information on each of the five nominees to the Board are being posted to all enrolled voters and property owners in the Tawa region,” says Wellington City Council Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp.

Central Library design principles agreed Wellington City Council has adopted four principles that will guide the design for modernising the Central Library building within the remediation plans.

The Central Library building was closed in March 2019 following an engineering assessment saying the way the floor was designed presented a high level of potential failure in a significant earthquake.

This includes extending the floor space and working with other organisations to offer people a broader range of services and innovative ways to engage with the collections.

“Wellingtonians were very clear when we consulted last year that we need a highly resilient central library building. Strengthening gives us the opportunity to hugely improve the library’s relationship to Te NJƗkau Civic Square and surrounding streets, and to completely rethink its

interior,” says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Future proofing the library, providing more space for people, and introducing new services and technology were also overwhelmingly supported by Wellingtonians.

“We adopted design principles that will guide the reshaping of the interior library space. These principles will provide much wanted technologies and ways to access the collection, along with new spaces and services for existing and new library users. I am particularly excited to confirm integration of Capital E, our City Archives and City Service Centre into the library, and that it will be an inclusive and more accessible building than before.

“I have no doubt that our Central Library, Te Matapihi, will rapidly become an even more treasured place for all Wellingtonians.

“We also agreed to a modest (880sq

metre) extension to the Level 3 and 4 office space that sits above the library proper. This extension will be net positive in terms of revenue to Council and make the existing office space more useable. We also agreed to making the building a 5-star green building which includes the consideration of a rooftop garden space in the design.”

At the meeting the Mayor put forward an amendment for officers to investigate the feasibility of including a Literary Hub within the Central Library which was adopted. This proposal was spoken to in the Public Participation part of the meeting by Claire Mabey of Verb Wellington, and Juliet Blyth of ReadNZ, who spoke on behalf of Te Ha, ReadNZ, Booksellers, Publisher’s Association and Verb Wellington.

The Council’s Libraries Portfolio Lead, Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons,

says working with partners, including Mana Whenua, Capital E, the Council’s Service Centre and Wellington City Archives will uncover the potential for people to connect with the collections and spaces, and offer a broader range of services in innovative ways.

“As well as returning the aspects of the library people value such as spaces to study, connect and read the collection, we are investigating how we may provide new programmes, such as makerspaces. We are working through how this may look, which we plan to share in the coming months.

“One principle which starts today is calling the Central Library by its gifted name Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, which already sit above its entrances. This name, gifted

by Te Taura Whiri o te reo MƗori (MƗori Language Commission)

when the building originally opened, reflects the Library’s purpose ‘to open windows on the wide world’.

“Our libraries strive to be places where everyone is welcome and have opportunities to view the world in different ways, and for knowledge to be passed on.”

The design principles were developed through early engagement with Mana Whenua, key stakeholders, and potential partners, and our library teams. They also align to the draft design principles for Te NgƗkau Civic Precinct. These were adopted, along with a few amendments, by the Council.

The options to extend levels three and four will now be included in the detailed design process which is currently underway. We will share more information on the process and a further detailed Design and Service Level Brief in the coming month.

St Benedict’s Fair puts fun in fundraising St Benedict’s School has celebrated its annual Mission Fair and raised more than $2500 for those in need.

The student-driven event is a popular one on the calendar.

“The Year 6 to 8 students sort themselves into groups and decide on an enterprise that

The day is overseen by the St Benedict’s School House Captains, who coordinate the planning, sort out the layout of stalls around the school, and encourage wide and varied

entrepreneurial traits among the students.

“When I asked the student how they felt about this leadership role and being in charge of running the stalls, they responded with:” “I really like the way that we gathered together and do our best to raise money for those people and families who really need it,” Cheryl says.

“It was a fun learning experience and I wished that it could have gone on for longer; I had St Benedict's School's Mission Fair was a student-driven success. lots of fun face painting other children.

“I enjoyed seeing everyone’s creative ideas and all for a good cause.”

This year’s Mission Fair raised $2545.20 for Caritas.

Newlands College pupil Josh Nielsen is hitting the right best while raising awareness for a side close to his heart.

Josh, who was diagnosed with autism as a baby performed a solo concert on Friday night in an effort to raise money for Autism New Zealand.

Josh has been learning the drums over the past 12 months and one day hopes to be part of a band.

Friend and drum teacher Senuka Sudusinghe has been part of Josh’s life since they were at Onslow College in year nine and ten.

“We have been friends for a long time and I started teaching him drums over he last year and Josh has idolized Phil Collins and I played the drums and work with other kids with ADHD and I saw that Josh had a passion for it,” Senuka says.

Humanitarian award for Churton Park woman April Phillips, whose nomination for the Outstanding Achievement Humanitarian Award in The Best Shorts Competition, California, has been announced as the winner.

The award is for her independently written and produced short film “The Last Man on Earth”.

In an unexpected twist of “life imitating art”, her Sci Fi film, completed in 2019 before Covid struck, is set in the aftermath of a global pandemic. A handful of survivors learn what makes a human being worthy of survival.

Her work highlights the

value of people with disabilities, and April, who was both writer and director, says this: “As the mother of a very precious and severely disabled child, I wanted my latest film to be more than just a piece of entertainment. It was a passion project focusing on disability.”

The goal of the Humanitarian Award is to honour filmmakers whose excellence in the filmmaking craft brings awareness to issues including ecology, political, social justice, health and wellness, animals, and conservation.

April didn’t enter that section herself, because the finalists

are selected by the judges and staff from thousands of entries.

Other previous high-profile winners of this award include Vanessa Redgrave for “Eyes of St John”, and Linda Mills and Chelsea Clinton for their barrier breaking documentary “Of Many”.

Rick Prickett, who chairs the Best Shorts competition, says: “It takes great talent to tackle the world’s most pressing issues with film and do a great job. It takes an even greater heart.

“The Best Shorts award helps set the standard for humanitarian filmmaking worldwide.”

Anzac Day services across Wellington Karori Normal School with host a mid-morning Anzac Day service on Sunday.

The outdoor event will begin at 11am with people encouraged to bring a chair.

There are a number of other services happening around the capital as well.

There will be a Dawn Service at 6am at the Pukeahu National War Memorial.

At 9am, Wellington Citizens’ Wreath Laying Service will go ahead at the Cenotaph.

The National Anzac Day Service will take place at 11am at Pukeahu National War Memorial.

There will be a Wreath Laying Service at 2.30pm at Ataturk Memorial.

Winter Maintenance? YIP! Hey Everyone, our few days of Summer has gone, and we are definitely on our way to Winter. Most of our community call us in well, well before they are thinking of selling, to obtain a free assessment as to the work they need to focus on to ensure their property stays in good selling condition. This week I want to share with you some areas of maintenance that you may not have thought about: s +EEPING THE WARMTH ). 7HEN WAS the last time you checked your ceiling / underfloor insulation? If you haven’t, chances are your insulation isn’t covering every part possible. Having some insulation moved and exposing parts of the property is like having a blanket with a hole in it. Simply move it back, or buy some more insulation, it is very affordable. s +EEPING THE MOISTURE /54 ) KNOW ) LL be repeating myself here, but I believe this is one of the best, cost-effective way – and it is to put down a moisture barrier (usually black polythene) under the house. By covering the soil, you are eliminating the moisture from the soil evaporating into your property. A dry house is a warm house. s #LADDING $AMAGE n !PART FROM THE obvious need to paint and clean your exterior cladding, one area that most people forget about is to clear soil/paving/plants away from the cladding. Anything that is covering your wall cladding or soaking up against it will be creating damage to your property. This is caused by the dampness left on the cladding and also condensation inside the walls. s #LEAN YOUR GUTTERS n )F YOU DON T HAVE the gutter guard system, by the time you see plants growing out of your gutters it may BE TOO LATE /VER TIME DEBRIS BUILDS UP IN your gutter putting strain on structure and

eventually the gutters will be damaged. Plus, if the gutter is near a wall, the same effect as mentioned in the previous point will happen as well. s #LEAN YOUR WEEP HOLES n -OST ALUMINIum joinery will have some system to drain the condensation out, this is typically in the form of a drain/weep hole. These become blocked over time (or worse, I’ve seen people block them to avoid wind coming in) and reduces THE ABILITY TO DRAIN OFF CONDENSATION #ONDENsation if not property managed will seem into your framing and walls creating problems.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a Mazda6 was parked on the street in Ohariu Road. The owner returned to find his car was damaged. The left rear quarterlight was smashed and the spare tyre taken from the boot. A silver Honda Stream station wagon parked in Broderick Road had a window smashed and a damaged driver’s lock in order to gain entry.

The offender took nothing. Also in Broderick Road a silver Honda Civic stationwagon had its rear registration plate stolen. In Frankmoore Avenue 12 chickens were stolen. A cage with four more was disturbed.

In addition a further 16 Quails appear to have been stolen.

In Newlands a Mazda Demio was stolen from Mark Avenue but later recovered in Oriel Avenue. The owner was not aware that her vehicle was stolen until Police contacted her. The vehicle was found with a smashed quarterlight, a flat front left tyre and a pulled ignition. A white Nissan Tiida parked in the driveway of a house in Barclay Street when the right rear passenger window was smashed. No entry gained.

In Khandallah a silver Honda Civic Ferio saloon was stolen from

Mandalay Terrace. It was later located in Hazard Grove, Cannons Creek, behind an abandoned house.

The driver’s door lock was damaged and the ignition barrel pulled out.

In Ganges Road the Khandallah Playgroup premises was burgled and vandalised. Several things were broken and others tagged.

In Karori an attempt was made to enter a Flat in South Karori Road by using a metal tool to bore holes around the door lock. The attempt was abandoned. A male was seen in the Sunshine Avenue area trying doors on cars parked in carports.

He was wearing a black hoodie and a face mask. CCTV was used to capture an image of him.

In Northland a silver Subaru Impreza hatchback parked on the street in Governor Road was stolen.

It has been located in Matatiro Street, Titahi Bay. It had a pulled ignition. A Subaru Forester parked on the road near a flat in The Rigi was broken into and damaged. The ignition and steering column were interfered with.

In Wadestown a white Nissan Caravan light van parked in Barnard Street was broken into. The

passenger door was forced to gain entry. The vehicle was searched but nothing taken. An intruder at a house in Fitzroy Street entered the property through a door that did not shut properly and gave the house a thorough search. $200 cash was taken. A house in Blackbridge Road was broken into by the use of a jemmy which splintered the wooden front door also jammed the lock. Passports and jewellery items are missing.

In Wilton a white Ford Ranger Ute parked in Wilton Road was broken into and a Hilti Laser stolen.

KƗpiti tai chi instructor Gillian has been teaching classes four times a week for 13 years. She’s seen the benefits personally as well as for those she instructs.

“I started tai chi to help with my overall well-being,” she says. “I knew it was a gentle form of exercise with a meditative outcome.

I thought I’d give it a go and I’m very glad I chose this path.”

Movements in Enliven’s Modified Tai Chi are specially designed so as not to put too much pressure on the knees.

“We follow the forms created by world leader in the field of tai chi for health improvement, Dr Paul Lam,” Gillian explains.

The graceful forms or movements have lyrical names such as ‘stroking the bird’s tail’, ‘waving clouds’ and ‘strum the lute’ which form a series of individual sets that focus on addressing osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes and overall balance and circulation.

Gillian says at times it can be challenging for participants to coordinate their arms and legs as well as

ANZAC Day National commemoration Anzac Day takes place each year on April 25 and commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war, while also honouring returned servicemen and women. April 25 marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 and WW1 centenary commemorations began last year. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea,

however, at the end of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders. Among those who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign were 2779 New Zealanders, almost one in four of those who served on Gallipoli. Devan Vishvaka proves invaluable for Johnsonville

Johnsonville cricketer Devan Vishvaka is engineering himself quite a future both on and off the field.

The 20-year-old was named Wellington Cricket’s under-20 player of the year.

Devan was named as the recipient of the Arthur Dick Cup for most runs in men’s division one premier club cricket.

The talented right-hander scored 759 runs across the season at an impressive average of 42, helping his side lift the Pearce Cup for the first time in their history.

Devan was the fourth leading run scorer in the Ewen Chatfield Trophy one-day competition with 263 runs from eight matches at an average of just under 33.

The Wellington College old-boy showed his class in the Pearce Cup

two-day competition – he finished as the second highest run scorer with 496 runs from ten innings at an average of just under 50. His high-score of 135 was a vital one, helping his side lift the trophy in the Grand Final against Taita District.

He did all of this while commuting from Auckland to play his cricket in the capital while pursuing an engineering degree.

“It means a lot and it was awesome to see my hard work didn’t go unnoticed.

“Hopefully it will help me get more of a chance with Wellington A and eventually the Firebirds.”

Devan says he came back from being top run scorer at the under-19 national tournament 12 months ago, gave him a big boost.

“Mentally I think I’ve improved, the way I prepare and the way I assess

situations when I’m batting has become much clearer.”

He says he was thankful for the support of the Johnsonville club for allowing him to continue to play for them.

“The club has been great and given me so much support which has really helped make my transition to studying in Auckland much easier and I’m happy I was able to contribute to the club’s success this season.”

Johnsonville’s Zac Ringrose was named highest wicket taker in premier men’s cricket with 53 for the season across all formats.

Zac was also named senior club cricketer of the year.

Onslow premier captain Sean O’Connor was named best and fairest captain while his team earned the same honour for their efforts.

Newlands cricketer Aditya Tiwari is getting a helping hand to follow his dreams.

Thirteen-year-old Newlands cricketer Aditya Tiwari’s off season training received a boost when he was awarded a full set of new gear from the ANZ Cricket Grant programme.

ANZ’s cricket grant programme gives New Zealand cricket players, teams and schools the chance to apply for sponsorship to help them with their game. Aditya said the new gear will help him level up his skills during the off season.

“This new, high quality gear will give me confidence when I step out onto the

pitch next season. I want to work on my consistency and I can’t wait to try out my new adult sized bat,” Aditya says.

Aditya’s love for cricket started strong when, aged just 11, he claimed top run scorer for the Wellington region with a huge 980 runs over 24 games.

“From day one I felt a connection to the game,” he says.

Aditya plays for the St Patrick’s College Junior A team, and has opened batting for the second XIteam - an intimidating experience for a young gun, but for Aditya it was about “going

out there, having fun and improving,” he said.

Pitying a flawed Tiger Pity was the overriding emotion I felt having watched the Tiger Woods documentary over the weekend.

I’d delayed watching the muchhyped three hour documentary called ‘Tiger’ so I could watch it in one sitting.

Ultimately I was left feeling sorry for Woods because his lifestyle was not one I would wish on an enemy.

Yes, a lot of his missteps have been caused by his own hand but the robotic nature of his childhood and the striving for golf domination imposed on him by his father,

meant Tiger had anything but an ordinary childhood.

Tiger’s ability to eliminate emotion from both his professional and personal life left me stunned.

That ability undoubtedly helped him in pressure-packed moments during major golf tournaments but it also saw him burn and discard many friendships and relationships in his personal life.

Tiger was described as his Father’s ‘golfing Frankenstein’ and it’s an apt way of describing him.

Kiwi caddie Steve Williams has apparently not spoken to Tiger

since he was let go from his role.

Williams said he thought he was being fired as Tiger’s caddie but did not realise he was being fired as his friend as well.

Tiger’s ability to eliminate emotion in big moments during golf tournaments made him one of the best to ever play the game but away from the greens, it made him a clearly flawed human.

It seems his intensive golf upbringing played its part in that.

What kind of childhood, if any, did Tiger have?

It certainly was not one free of pressure.

The documentary showed the tumultuous relationship with his Dad, Earl, and the impact Earl’s supposed womanising had on the young Tiger and it seems it played a part in his own infidelity issues which hit the media around 2010.

Like any good American story, the public loved the rise of the golfing phenom, then loved breaking him down only to see him get his redemption story with his 15th major at Augusta in 2019.

Nothing about Tiger’s life has been normal, almost every second of it has been played out in the spotlight.

I do wonder if Earl had his time again, whether he would have put his son on this path.

Somehow I don’t think he would have changed much.

Tiger is a global icon and despite all the missteps, that was Earl’s goal and it has been achieved.

My biggest takeaway was Tiger did not choose this life.

Like an overzealous parent on the sideline of their child’s under-8 rugby game on a Saturday morning, Tiger has not lived out his own dreams but lived out those of his parents, and that is quite sad when you think about it.

Western Suburbs upstage North Wellington

Western Suburbs used home field advantage to good effect on Sunday when they hosted North Wellington in round 4 of the Men’s Central League football competition.

Despite some solid passages of enjoyable football by both teams, Norths ultimately couldn’t deliver the goods when they conceded three goals in the first half and one in the second for a comprehensive 4-0 win to Wests.

It took 20 minutes for Wests to get on the board when North Wellington failed to clear their line and William Gillion scored from the ensuing melee. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 after clinical finishing by Oscar Hough when Nor t hs were stretched at the back. The decisive blow came on the stroke of

half time when Norths coughed up possession too easily and Norths keeper Keegan Smith had no chance in a one on one with Wan Gatkek.

Wests played a solid possession based game and held their shape and composure throughout. The Wests fourth and final goal came mid-way through the second half when they applied the rinse and repeat approach one more time to stretch North Wellington at the back and Otto Ingham ghosted through to make it 4-0. To be fair, Norths certainly had their chances but were found lacking too many times when they over cooked crosses and passes that made things too easy for a well organised Wests defence.

In other matches in the round, Wellington Olympic enjoyed their Friday night excursion to Fraser Park and had a 2-1 win over Lower Hutt. Miramar Rang-

ers put on 6 unanswered goals at David Farrington Park over Wainuiomata while Waterside Karori eventually let Wairarapa United catch up to them for a very competitive 2 all draw.

Napier City Rovers bounced back from their heavy loss the previous weekend at the hands of Wairarapa United to demolish Petone 7-0 at Park Island.

Miramar remain at the top of the table with a maximum 12 points, closely followed by Olympic on 10. Petone and Wainuiomata have yet to open their account at the other end of the spectrum.

In the Men’s Premier League, North Wellington duked out a 0-0 draw with Wellington United while things were much more rosier in the Women’s Premier League with the Innkeeper Johnsonville North Wellington side having a solid 3-1 win over Island Bay.

A missed opportunity is how Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson described his team’s 23-19 Swindale Shield defeat to the Upper Hutt Rams at Maidstone Park.

Johnsonville again proved they would be no pushovers this year as they pushed the Rams all the way on their Old Timers Day. “It’s the little moments that are letting us down but I think we did surprise them with what we brought to the game.

“We conceded a try just before Johnsonville pushed Upper Hutt all the way before and just after halftime and those are succumbing 23-19 in the second round of the Swindale the moments where we are putting ourselves under self-inflicted pressure.

Johnsonville were unable to make the most of Upper Hutt having two men in the sin-bin during the second half.

“We got a little white line fever there and didn’t make the most of the opportunities.

“Our scrum had periods of dominance but we lost concentration at the wrong time.”

“When we spoke as a team we said we wanted to remember the feeling of this loss and learn from it.

Johnsonville will play away from home again on Saturday against Oriental-Rongotai at the Polo Ground for the Ash Pointon Cup. Johnsonville sir seventh on the table with six points after a win and a loss in the opening two rounds.
