Nearly a century of tennis

Around 70 people, mostly past and present members, attended the celebration. People travelled from as far north as the Wairarapa and Waiterere Beach.
One of the most interesting historical facts that people attending the Jubilee learned was that the club has actually been operating for almost 100 years.

Julie Scott, one of the club’s top junior players and who is still playing at the top level, and the current club secretary Hayley
Lorraine – who joined the club in 1963 and was President for 20 consecutive years – cut the 75th Jubilee cake.
Larsen met the attendees, giving them their name tags and a voucher for a complimentary drink.
Following the cake cutting Lorraine gave a talk on her memories of the club, and Joyce spoke about Ian Gooch’s contribution to Wainuiomata tennis.
Last Sunday’s Jubilee was celebrating 75 since the club was first incorporated, rather than when it began operating.
The court was built on the site of the school’s first classroom, which was built in 1857 and then demolished in 1916 after a new classroom was built in 1908.

Pataka Kai clothing shop
By Frank Neill
The K kiri Marae P taka Kai runs a pre-loved clothing shop that helps pay for the food P taka Kai provides to needy people.
It is located on the church side of the P taka Kai, which is based at St Peter’s Church in Wise Street.
The pre-loved clothing shop is open from 9am to 2:30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
“We have got some beautiful stuff coming into the shop,” says Dacrcelle Jensen, who manages the shop as a volunteer.
“We also have crafts. We have lots of different things – all sorts of different crafts.”
The crafts include knitted blan-
kets, knitted jumpers, patchwork aprons and lavender bags.
“I am looking for volunteers who can come in or who can make them from home,” Darcelle says.
“Everything we sell on this site is to raise funds to help buy food for P taka Kai to give to people who need it.
“I love what we stand for. I love doing things to help the community. It’s a great kaupapa,” she says.
She also loves the Wainuiomata community, as demonstrated by P taka Kai putting together parcels to send to Napier and Hastings to help people there who have been devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle.
“it’s just incredible what people have brought in. We have an amazing community here in Wainuiomata.”

Catch up sessions invaluable
By Frank Neill
Hutt South-based National Party Member of Parliament Chris Bishop says he finds his regular “Catch Up with Chris” sessions invaluable.
The sessions are held at the Wainuiomata Library and the times he will be holding them are advised both on his Facebook page and at his Wainuiomata Electorate Office, 126 Main Road, Homedale Village.
The sessions, he says, are “an ideal opportunity to find out what issues and concerns matter” to the people he represents.
“It’s really important to stay in touch with the community and hear what’s on people’s minds.”
Chris Bishop’s Electorate Office is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am to 4pm. The phone number is 564 1504.

Local author features in new series
By Frank Neill
Wainuiomata author and publisher Dahlia Malaeulu features as the writer of one of the first two books in a Pasifika bilingual series called the Moana Oceania Series.
Dahlia’s book is entitled “S moa” and is being published by Oratia Books alongside “Cook Islands – Kuki ‘Airani” by Jean Tekura Mason.
In her book, Dahlia provides a comprehensive overview of life for Samoans in the islands and in New Zealand.
With her English text translat-
ed into Gagana Samoa by Tapaau Auvaa, the book includes a section on language basics.
An important feature is its explanation of Fa’as moa, the fundamental values of Samoan life, including connection to ‘Aiga (family), nu’u (village), land and religion.
Another important focus of “S moa” is how Pasifika peoples maintain and adapt their culture living in Aotearoa.
Dahlia is a passionate educator and strong advocate for Pasifika children’s literature.
She is an award-winning author and publisher of Mila’s

FACT
Is there really a funny bone?
But your funny bone isn’t actually a bone at all. Running down the inside part of your elbow is a nerve called the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve lets your brain know about feelings in your fourth and fifth fingers. It’s also one of the nerves that controls some movement of your hand.

Bus replacement some time away
By Frank Neill
Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) will not reinstate a direct bus service between Wainuiomata and Wellington while there was a shortage of bus drivers, Regional Councillor Quentin Duthie told the 15 February meeting of the Wainuiomata Community Board.
Labour and National’s two Huttbased MPS – Ginny Andersen and Chris Bishop – and Hutt City Councillors Keri Brown and Josh Briggs made presentations to GWRC at the council’s meeting on 15 December.
The four representatives advocated “very strongly that the regional council should reinstate the bus,” Cr Duthie said.
However while there was a bus driver shortage “we cannot expand anything.
“You won’t see anything soon,
Trades
but be assured it [reinstatement of a direct Wainuiomata to Wellington bus] is in there,” Cr Duthie said.
“The elephant on the bus is the bus driver shortage at the moment.
“We are 125 bus drivers short in Wellington.
“A major focus for our council this year is to get the bus driver shortage sorted and the services back to normal,” he said.
Fares on off-peak buses would decrease from 1 April this year, however GWRC was looking at increasing peak fare by 3%, Cr Duthie said.
Costs had risen more than 3% and the council needed to balance covering the cost increase from either rates or from fares. Council would be making a decision on the question soon.
In addition, the half-price fares funded by the government will continue until at least June.
Cr Keri Brown said she considered that it was not a good time to increase peak fares by 3%, given the need to encourage more people onto public transport and given the need to address climate change.
”Since Christmas we have made a lot of good progress [on Queen Street],” the Queen Street Redevelopment Manager, Jamie Rowe, told the community board.
“The street is looking like a street again,” he said.
The focus of the project now was on tidying up the street and working on stage 4.
“Over the next couple of weeks what you are going to see is the foundation of the deck in place and we will be building the deck from there.
Stage four of the project would involve a series of developments on the south side of Queen Street, including the deck, gardens and a basketball court.
“We are at the part of the project now where the disruptions will be less and less,” Mr Rowe said.
Hutt City Council planned to develop a Hutt City Indigenous Biodiversity Strategy, the council’s head of parks and reserves, Kelly Crandle told the community board.
The aim of the strategy was to help protect and enhance the natural environment.
“The council plans to release a draft Indigenous Biodiversity Strategy on 28 March.
The draft strategy would then be shared during a series of community consultations between 28 March and I May.
“The strategy is planned to start on 1 July this year,” Ms Crandle said.
Its goal was to promote “the return of health to the natural world in a way that we can measure, manage, protect and restore to
encourage interconnectedness with nature.
“Central to this vision is the recognition that the people are a part of nature and that we can only thrive when nature thrives.”
Hutt City Council would be holding meetings in Wainuiomata on resilience, Cr Keri Brown said in answer to a question during the public speaking time.
Council planning for resilience, particularly for the hill road, was happening, she said.
“Can we have some help please with pest control in Moores Valley Road?” Pauline Innes asked during public speaking time.
Deer and pigs in particular were a nuisance, along with opossums.
“Surely you can get deer shooters to do some pest control work.
“Deer can stretch up to seven feet to chew the trees, so they do a lot of damage to the bush,” Ms Innes said.
