Scrunchie mania By Megan Connolly
Scrunchies upon scrunchies upon scrunchies! What started as a design project for extra credits at Wainuiomata High School has become an exciting side hobby for 16-year-old Essta Faitele. Creating scrunchies of all colours and sizes, Essta began making and putting her scrunchies on her Instagram page in October last year and selling them for a small price. “It started off as a side project. Now my whole family wears them, even dad she adds. Continued on page 2. Scrunchie queen Essta Faitele handmakes every scrunchie she sells. Photo: Megan Connolly

Essta handmakes bright scrunchies Continued from page 1. “Mum would always yell ‘Where are all of the hair ties?’,” because we all have long hair,” Essta says. “Now we have a whole drawer full of scrunchies.” Scrunchies are made of a variety of fabrics with a piece of elastic sewn inside. Very popular in the ‘80s, scrunchies have made a huge ‘comeback’ in recent years and can be found in stores all over the city; their brightness making them the perfect accessor y for b ot h your hair and your wrists.

because she can watch movies and tv shows when she does it. “It’s really therapeutic in a way,” Essta says. “It feels different from when I started because now I look forward to going fabric shopping. “It has been a big learning experience.” The first person to purchase scrunchies outside of their family was a lady from Johnsonville, Essta adds. “We were so excited.” Her advice for other motivated young people to follow their passions is to find what you’re good at or something you are interested in and just keep practising. “I’m just trying to learn a lot while I’m young.” If you would like to purchase Essta’s scrunchies they are $2 each from her Instagram page @ scrunchiesbyessta or, if you’d like to see them in person, contact her at 022 198 6109 to organise a time to pop around.

“Before I started making them I saw lots of people wearing them, but they’re so expensive,” Essta says. Creating them is a family affair. With five sisters they try and make an assembly line where her younger sister sews the elastic inside and mum Nina readies the scrunchie fabric to be sewed into shape. “Each one is handmade and we always check the quality. All made with love,” she says. So far there are around 18 different styles and colours of scrunchies. Sewing is a relatively new part of Essta’s life. In fact she, didn’t learn how to sew until last year, learning the skills at school in her design class. “My teacher Miss Reddy was a big help and taught us all how to make them. Even in the holidays, she took a lot of time to help us.” Her favourite part is hand sewing into the final scrunchie stage
The craft group that meets on Thursday afternoons have begun knitting joey pouches to help in the tragic cirumstances left behind by the Australian bushfires. It is estimated that almost half a billion animals have perished and many have been left injured in the wake of the fires. “With so many killed there are bound to be millions of animals that need help,” librarian and organiser Annie Reilly says. The joey pouches are meant to replicate that of a kangaroo pouch and help the rescued animals to be nursed back to health.
There are two types of knitting patterns that can be worked on, one large and one small. All of the wool and yarn has been donated by members of the public. A drop off point in the Community Hub Library has all the information regarding dimensions as well as drop off point for materials. If you prefer other craft styles like crochet, sewing or weaving, there are official guidelines available on the Spotlight website for you to follow if you wish to help. The Animal Rescue Craft Guild then distributes the donations.

To the beat of the drum It was a feast for the ears with the sound of drums outside The Community Hub Library on Friday afternoon. All sorts of percussion and drumming instruments were available for the group to have a play, explore and find a rhythm that’s natural and fun. Run by passionate musician and teacher Andreas, everyone of all ages was able to join in. And if percussion wasn’t your forte there were plenty of other instruments too.
Antariksh Anand keeps the beat with Richard Mackay.

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: What musician would you like to see in concert?
Breannah Smith “I’ve seen all my favourites, some more than once! I guess I’d like to see Queen with Freddie Mercury or Van Halen.”
Elizabeth Morris “Lauren Daigle because she’s got a unique voice. I just like her music.”
Lucy Green “Stevie Wonder because he is one of the greatest musicians alive in my opinion. He would be incredible live and there’s so much history.”
Susan Quickfell “I don’t like concerts. I’d prefer to stay at home and garden.”
Tracy Bognuda “I would love to see the Doobie Brothers in concert again. I have to admit to seeing them twice already, but they never fail to please. They’re fabulous musicians.”
Michael Gibson “The Rolling Stones because they’re one of the longest-running bands still touring the world.”
Library refresh and spruce up By Megan Connolly
Out with the old and in with the new! The Community Hub Library has undergone a ‘spruce up’ over the summer period with more spaces available for adults to read and relax. “It is a more homely space and, we hope, more inviting,” children and teens librarian Alexia Herrera says. “There are more places to sit and relax among the books, and we tried to make it more accessible for people with disabilities.” There is also a more designated children’s area that is away from major entrances, and a quiet teens area. “We tried to codify the space,” Alexia says. “We’re hoping it is more reflective of our community and will be a better space for them and more flexible for their needs.” The library section now flows from one pocket of space to the next with tables and couches and the toy library flows into the

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Steady the ship needed with India series The Indian cricket tour of New Zealand which begins on Friday looms as an important one for senior members of the Black Caps. After the humiliation that occurred on Australian soil over the Christmas period, it’s a key series for several senior members plus relatively new coach Gary Stead. The Black Caps, ranked two in the world, were blown to smithereens by the Aussies who ruthlessly
exposed the lack of depth which has always been an issue. While Kane Williamson’s men would have loved an easy home series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or South Africa, they have to deal with a hungry Indian team with arguably the best pace attack they have ever had. The Black Caps look like a team who have peaked, much like the All Blacks last year, they are asking
the same names to do the bulk of the work to set up victories. Australia proved when Williamson, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham and Trent Boult are unable to produce world class performances, the supporting cast struggles to step up. It is also a big series for Stead, who is in the tricky spot of piloting the end of this golden era of Kiwi cricket while also ushering in the next generation.
Sadly for Stead it appears the cupboard is relatively empty. There is a need to find a second opening batsmen, two dependable top-order batsmen, a spinner who actually poses a wicket-taking threat and a quick bowler who can bowl with pace but also stay on the field. That is a large number of holes to fill in the coming year or two. There have also been rumblings
over whether Williamson’s batting is suffering because of the captaincy duties. I think those whispers are unfounded but a poor home series against India would pile the pressure on Stead and his captain. This series must give the team and certain individuals some confidence back, if it does not, the tough times could only just be beginning for the sport in New Zealand.
Twilight croquet welcomes any new players The Wainuiomata Croquet Club is embracing the longer summer days with their twilight croquet matches which run from 3.30pm to 7pm on a Friday night. Croquet is a low exention sport that involves focus and skill to hit a wooden or plastic ball with a mallet through hoops embedded in a grass playing court. The game of croquet is estimated to date back to the early 17th-century, originating as palle-maille with the first documentation of the modern version of the game in 1856. At the local club, it is about socialising and getting outside while getting in some light exercise. “It’s good because you don’t have to bend down as long as you can walk you can play” player Chris Mayoss says. Twilight croquet hopes to encourage new players to come along and have a go as it is after work on a Friday. “We just want to encourage people to turn up and have fun,” says Joyce Jones. “If you’re curious about the game come and pop in.” There is a small charge for your first game and it is important to wear flat, soft shoes to play in. “It is a super way to get out in the fresh air,” Joyce adds. Croquet is unique in that it was the first outdoor sport to embrace equality with everyone playing at the same level. Twilight croquet will be played until the end of March as summer comes to a close.

A day on the green for cancer
Golf team Bants: Michael Page, James Castle, Dan Hewitt, Josiah McIntyre, Tim Wilson, Jamie Wilson, Bruce Austin and Josh Castle. Photo: Supplied
On Sunday eight members of the Wainuiomata Golf Club took part in the Longest Day Challenge, raising money for the Cancer Society. The group, known as Team Bants, arrived at the golf course before dawn to start the challenge of playing four full rounds in one day. They were greeted by light showers for the first three rounds, which proved to be
quite refreshing. Starting the final fourth round at approximately 4pm, the showers had abated, and the sun appeared to really test the determination of the group. The team finished their 72nd hole together at 7.30pm, and through sighs of relief were able to look back on an awesome achievement. Team member Josiah McIntyre, whose idea it was to sign
up for the challenge, said the guys were very happy they had completed the challenge and wished to thank their support team, family, and all those who had sponsored them, or donated funds. To date, the teams have raised almost $5500 for the Cancer Society. For more information please check out https://thelongestday.everydayhero.com/ nz/team-josiah.
