Wainuiomata Speedway driver Keegan Levien is about to live out a family dream years in the making, halfway around the world.

The 25-year-old is representing New Zealand in the BRISCA F1 World Final in the United Kingdom in September.

He earned the spot during the 2019/2020 Speedway season where he claimed the top spot in New Zealand.

Keegan gets shot to take on UK rivals Continued from page 1 During this season of winning many events, he also won the World 240s event which is held in Rotorua.

This won him one of two New Zealand spots into the World Final.

Unfortunately, it was also the year everything turned upside down with Covid. This meant that he was unable to use this entry, and he thought his opportunity was gone.

To his surprise, Keegan got the call up last week that he was able to still represent New Zealand in one of those spots on September 10.

“We weren't expecting to get this opportunity,” he says.

“To earn it and be part of the UK’s biggest event every year is a big deal.

The event is raced on a combination of tarmac and dirt, a change from the exclusively dirt track racing in New Zealand.

“It's all on tarmac this year which will be a throwback to my go-karting days and they run 900 horsepower engines as opposed to our 500,” Keegan says.

“It’ll be fast on the straights and slow round the corners.”

Keegan and many of his relatives as well as his partner are all fanatical about speedway.

since I was eight and haven’t had a season off,” I just love it.

“My younger brother races, my Dad used to race, my partner races, it’s a full-on family thing and I hate winters because all I want to do is get back into it,” he says.

“I've been going to speedway since I could breathe,” he says.

“Once you’re in it, you’re in it for life.

“We’ll be racing in Christchurch one weekend and Auckland the next, it’s nuts but fun.”

Keegan says he is keen to finish in the top 10 at the finals.

“A lot of Kiwis struggle to finish the race because we don’t get the seat-time,” he says.

“If I could finish with a solid placing that’d be great.

“They aren't going to let a Kiwi just come over and push them around so I'm sure it will be a big thing.”

Keegan is planning a quiz night which is likely to be on July 23 at Te Marua Speedway clubrooms but he is looking for sponsorship to help fund the trip.

Pukutakaro programme helps children lead play Demolishing a school playground shouldn’t lead to more play opportunities, but that is exactly what happened at Epuni Primary School.

In 2019, the school’s playground became unsafe to use and had to be pulled down.

“Raising the money to build a new one was a significant task, so in the meantime, we began looking for other ways for children to be actively engaged during break times,” says Janet Evans, Epuni Primary School Principal.

During that time, Senior Recreation Programmer Sam Dickie and her team from “Active in the Hutt” at Hutt City Council visited Epuni Primary School to deliver the Pukutakaro programme.

“Pukutakaro means to be playful and is a free play programme developed to encourage quality play. It really focuses on providing play environments that are responsive to children’s needs and interests,” says Sam. “We see play as a valuable outcome in itself and success is having everyone join in.”

The programme sparked inspiration and the school looked into what else they could do to increase play opportunities. To find out, they went to the experts – the tamariki.

“We opened up our sports room, creating a system to distribute equipment to students during break times. Students were able to take out just about any of the equipment, and they would use it in a variety of ways,” says Janet.

the school. One idea was to purchase bike ramps to use on the courts. Some students looked at improving play by changing our playground markings and we’re now using the kids’ designs to refresh the markings.”

Purchasing new equipment was next on the list. But instead of regular sports equipment and balls, Janet and her team bought skateboards, pogo sticks, and other play parts that resonated with their tamariki, including stilts that were especially made by a local volunteer.

Epuni Primary School believes in the value and power of play and the tamariki really enjoy and make the most of each session.

Work begins on Naenae Pool The old Naenae Pool is put to rest as a dawn blessing clears the way for construction to start on the new state-of-the-art aquatic and fitness centre.

Construction of the new pool will take two years and is due to open mid to late 2024.

Baz giveth the golden era and Baz taketh away It seems fitting that the man who started this golden era of New Zealand cricket should be one of the main architects in its demise last week.

Brendon McCullum’s appointment as England test coach has paid hefty dividends just three weeks in and has left the Black Caps in a cricketing abyss.

England’s five wicket win, where they chased down 299 in 50 overs on the final day had McCullum’s fingerprints all over it and the Black Caps had little answer in the final

session of play.

Where the Black Caps go from here on seems filled with uncertainty.

Rumours are rife that Kane Williamson will stand down as captain in the coming weeks which means heir-apparent Tom Latham is set for the top job - but is he the right man?

I’d argue he gets the role by default, running unopposed like an old school Tim Shadbolt mayoral campaign in Invercargill but the reality is, Latham’s batting

against top sides and away from home has to be a worry. Plus his tactics as captain have contributed to this latest English defeat and an awful test loss at home to Bangladesh and a drawn series against South Africa.

England spoke of their intent to win the latest test after day four, there was no hiding it, there was no ambush, yet Latham, coach Gary Stead and co had no plan B or C to call upon.

I’m still firmly of the belief Devon Conway is an opener.

He has the technique and runs which prove that and should partner Latham at the top.

Can Will Young bat at No 4?

Perhaps but that, along with the all rounder and slow bowling option continues to be a worry for New Zealand.

The worst part of all this is that this isn’t an amazing England team, they’re just a team playing with new-found self-belief.

The loss felt like the official end of this golden run of cricket we’ve had since 2015.

MSP wear down Wainuiomata

Wainuiomata started brightly but were not able to contain Marist St Pats in their Swindale Shield encounter on Saturday.

Marist St Pats prevailed 76-21 but Wainuiomata did lead 14-7 after a fast start.

The loss of Wellington midfielder, Peter Umaga-Jensen early on due to a shoulder injury hampered the composure and creativity of the Wainuiomata backline.

“I thought the start was really good but we just didn’t have the talent to go with them for that long,” coach Daniel Smith says.

“What I was pleased to see is that we kept in the fight and scored in the 79th minute, so the effort was there and that made me happy.

“Losing Peter early hurt because he keeps everyone around him calm and when he went off, we lost a lot of our creativity.”

Daniel says his team held their own at set piece time but they were guilty of kicking away too much possession.

“When we ran out of ideas, we just kicked the ball away and they were able to score three 60m tries against us as a result,” he says.

Daniel says he was thrilled with the effort of blindeside flanker Kitiona Leitufia who switched to No 8 later in the game and scored a late try.

Wainuiomata will have their annual grudge match against Petone at William Jones Park for the Darren Larsen Cup, on Saturday.

“We want to meet them with physicality,” Daniel says.

“Yes, they’re top of the table but we would love to disrupt their season and that’s what we will be trying to do.”

Wainuiomata will be looking for their third win of the campaign in the final round-robin encounter.

Wainuiomata fall just short in final Avalon hosted the division two Izzy Ford Cup decider against near-neighbours Wainuiomata, on Saturday with Avalon prevailing 19-12.

Both sides were convincing winners in their semi-finals over Pare-Plim and Poneke respectively.

Avalon won the Division 2 final 19-12 at home at Fraser Park against Wainuiomata, in an evenly contested decider.

The run of play saw Avalon go up early with a converted try and Wainuiomata equalise to make it 7-7 after about 20 minutes. Avalon doubled their lead with a second converted try, but Wainuiomata scored again to make it 14-12 to Avalon at halftime Avalon scored the only try of the second half, but this was enough to win the title.

Hampered by their own poor selections (Neil Wagner where are you?) and an inability to adapt has seen the Black Caps slip quietly back into mediocrity over the past six months.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for the era we just had and knew it had to come to an end but not to this England team, not being blown off the park on the final day of a test.

England appear to be on the way up, meanwhile the Black Caps look dazed and confused from their rapid descent.
