Spokesperson for the development Rebecca Reed says 137 offers were sent out to those interested but not all of those people fitted the criteria. Some of them were property investors so the number was whittled down to 73.

“It was decided to have a ballot because how do you decide why one person should get the house and not the other when they both

fit the criteria so we wanted to do it in a fair and transparent way,” she says.

Kainga in Wainuiomata is a unique community partnership involving a collective of Te Ati Awa affiliated businesses delivering housing initiatives for first home buyers in Lower Hutt and getting people in the community into work.

The development, located at the junction of Moores Valley Road and Hair Street in Wainuiomata, will include 51 new homes, 41 of which will be set aside for first home buyers. The semi-detached 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 117sqm

The development is the first of a series of projects Koru Homes NZ founder Adrian Chooi has for the region.

He says the development has to be in his home town of Wainuiomata but wishes he could have offered more properties to first home buyers.

Adrian says he was happy when he received so much positive feedback but having to ballot the 73 applicants was not something he enjoyed.

“I am not enjoying doing it like

this because there will be a lot of people with tears of sadness that we can’t help,” he says.

Koru Homes NZ has partnered with local businesses to bring the development to life, including Wai-Worx, a collective of Te Ati Awa affiliated businesses.

Wai-Worx members will work with local listing agent CK&CO Realty to sell the houses and provide civil works, drainage, earthworks, and cultural development services. Koru Homes NZ and Wai-Worx providers are also taking on local apprentices to complete the work through WelTec.

Wainuiomata is known for its strong community.

Our sports clubs, our marae, our churches are all places where we come together and support each other. We know that people want to move here, yearly residential building consent numbers have more than tripled since 2016 in Lower Hutt. That’s in large part because people see Wainuiomata as a place where they want to live, where they want to put down roots, and raise their family. We know that when we build houses, we build communities.

We also know that housing has become less accessible for more people. There’s no such thing as a silver bullet solution to fix the housing crisis in the Hutt, and we need all hands on deck to fix the issues that have been decades in the making. The changes we made to interest deductibility, the bright-line test and the first-home grant scheme are designed to tip the balance in favour of first-home buyers and put a lid on rampant property speculation. Although the Government is doing what it can to make housing more affordable, property developers tend to want to maximise profit and this impacts on house prices.

That’s why it’s so impressive that Adrian Chooi of Koru Homes has opted to make home ownership easier for first-home buyers - by selling 41 new three-bedroom homes at a fixed price of $650,000, well below the market rate. These homes will be prioritised for people who have been

struggling to find a home, people who qualify for the Government’s First Home Grant as well as to members of Te ti Awa. I met Adrian years ago, when he came to me to help connect his company with local businesses and partners. He’s doing this because of community, one that he became part of when he moved here in the early 1990s. It’s fantastic to see a development like this in Wainuiomata where we need more affordable housing, and I take my hat off to Koru Homes for being a business with a big heart.

Council needs to get onboard By: Gerald Rillstone Developer Adrian Chooi has plans for a second development at the end of Fitzherbert Road but needs council to come onboard with a plan change to help bring it to fruition.

His company already owns four hectares of land at Upper Fitzherbert and is looking at purchasing another 2 hectares.

If the council comes onboard and grants the plan change it will provide a welcome 100 dwelling boost to the housing crisis in the region.

The development is to be the second in a series of projects Koru Homes NZ founder Adrian Chooi has for the region.

“The next will double the size of our first one and will be looking at 100 or more houses,” Adrian says.

He hopes to be able to provide another opportunity for first home buyers with a possible 18 to 20 homes to be offered at a fixed price.

“I am not sure how many we can offer because we don’t know what the cost of con-

struction will be in three years time and what scares me is we have already increased the cost of construction three times this year and I don’t know what it will be in two years time when we deliver the houses,” he says.

The next development will cater for seniors also with single level housing and will also focus on two, three and four bedroom dwellings.

Hutt MP Ginny Anderson, who has been working with Koru Homes NZ over the past three years by helping connect the company with local part-

ners, is hugely supportive of the development.

“Adrian has bought the price of some of the houses down to meet the first home grant and my view is government always has a role but we are not the only ones and it is great to see some other players in the community stepping up to help make the houses more affordable,” Ginny says.

“The sticking point is we need a plan change from Hutt City Council and if they do it we can get 100 affordable homes down there.”

Marketing Professor and ultra-marathon runner Nick Ashill is taking on an epic challenge to support the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s Breathe Better September campaign. Have your say on Hutt’s transport future A short survey asking residents what affects their choice of transport around Lower Hutt will help inform the development of the draft Integrated Transport Strategy, due for release in December.

The survey follows on from a May 2021 survey that looked at peoples’ travel patterns throughout the Hutt.

People are asked about the degree to which aspects such as convenience, congestion, cost, parking, safety, and connectedness affect their decision to travel by private vehicle, public transport, or active

modes such as walking or cycling.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the integrated transport strategy is a foundational piece of work for the city as population growth is making it harder to get around.

“This strategy will set out a vision and roadmap for the future of transport in Lower Hutt. We need to ensure that all parts of our transport network work together more effectively so that all users feel they can get around our city safely and efficiently.”

“Lower Hutt hit its 2030 population targets last year, and this is putting considerable pressure on our current networks. We want this plan to reflect what the community experiences every day in our city, so it’s vital they take an active part in creating it.”

Mayor Barry urges residents to complete the survey so their observations around the whole network - roads, public transport, and active modes - are considered in any changes proposed.

“We want to hear from people

who make frequent trips around Lower Hutt as well those who may not travel around much at all, but whose reasons may be very important to developing a strategy that successfully addresses the transport issues we face.”

Director Economy and Development, Kara Puketapu-Dentice says for people to move around Lower Hutt more easily, some things will have to be done differently.

“Getting a strong understanding of how residents weigh up their travel options is important in devel-

oping a robust strategy,” Kara says .

inbrief news Low Use electricity pricing plans The Grey Power NZ Federation has come out strongly against a government decision to phase out low use electricity pricing plans because, apart from the promise of some industry provided support, no other alternatives have been announced.

Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods has announced that the current plan which allows for reduced charges for people using low amounts of electricity will be phased out over five years starting in April 2022.

Federation Energy National Advisory Group chair Bern Sommerfeld says the minister had made a fundamental error in assuming that getting rid of low-use electricity plans would create a fairer playing field for all New Zealanders and encourage a switch to electric technologies.

Wainuiomata Library new mural By: Gerald Rillstone A mural that started off as a holiday programme run by Kaitiaki Wainuiomata Community Hub Michael Haynes has come to fruition recently.

Michael says he ran the pro-

gramme for local kids earlier in the year during the May school holidays.

“I designed a large banner in black and white and printed it actual size,” Michael says.

The design is based around reading, knowledge and culture

and over two sessions the attendees of the programme painted the printouts that were produced on canvas paper.

“I photographed all this work and superimposed the colour photos back onto the original illustration to form the colours

and patterns of the final mural design.”

Michael then got the stunning piece of art work printed on a large vinyl banner and it’s now adorning the wall above the Wainuiomata Children’s section Library.

s 1 large onion Onion, roughly chopped s 3 tbsp mild curry paste s 400g can chopped tomatoes s 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder s 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger s 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and chopped s 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed s 30g pack fresh coriander, leaves chopped s Rice

1. Put 1 roughly chopped large onion, 3 tbsp mild curry paste, a 400g can chopped tomatoes, 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder, 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger and 1 chopped yellow pepper into the slow cooker pot with a third of a can of water and stir well.

2. Add 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed, and push them under all the other ingredients so that they are completely submerged. Cover with the lid and chill in the fridge overnight.

3. The next day, cook on Low for 6 hrs until the chicken and vegetables are really tender.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is seeking feedback about making State Highway 2 (SH2) between Ngauranga and Featherston safer for all road users and asking people to share their thoughts on the current speed limits.

From Monday 20 September, Waka Kotahi will begin seeking feedback on safer speed limits from people who live and work in the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa, and those who travel this section of State Highway 2 regularly.

“Thousands of people use this road every day, whether it’s to get to work or school, to visit family and friends, to pick up their groceries or to see the doctor. Wherever people are going, they should be able to get there and back safely,” Director of Regional Relationships Emma Speight says.

“We want to know what people think of the current speed limits on State Highway 2. Your feedback, alongside our technical assessments of the road, will help inform a proposal for safer speed limits.

“Creating a safe transport system requires a mix of solutions that work together to keep people safe. So alongside proposing safer speeds, we are investigating infrastructure improvements for the highway. We will share more details about what these improvements might look like in the coming months.”

Dog club faces closure By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s Dog Training Club is in urgent need of trainers if it is to remain open otherwise a valuable facility to the community will be lost.

With the Hutt region having the largest number of pet ownership in the wider Wellington region it will be a huge loss if the club which has been running for decades has

to close.

The club is calling on volunteers to put their hands up to be trained as dog obedience instructors before the end of the year or it faces closure.

Club president Michael Day has been with the club for a long time and would hate to see it close.

“This is the last straw for the club and we are hoping to get some responses in,” he says.

“We are one of the best clubs for atmosphere and team work and we concentrate on domestic obedience.”

A call went out last year for instructors to be trained and the response was great with 10 people putting their hands up.

“We thought that was great because we only needed five so we ran a programme of training the instructors,” Michael says.

But following the 2020 Christmas break only one returned out of the 10 who had been trained.

“I think a portion of the people misinterpreted what the goal was and the end goal was lets keep this dog club going for Wainuiomata,” he says.

“I think people saw it as a means to increase their dog training knowledge for themselves and maybe do something of their own, we want to

make is clear it is for the club and for the community otherwise it will close,” Michael says.

“We are a nonprofit organisation.”

Michael says there are two people who have showed an interest so far but a few more would make a huge difference.

Once the instructors have been trained the commitment is one night a week at the club on a Tuesday night from 7pm till 8pm.

Be aware of fraud offending Wellington Police are aware of an increase in fraud offending being reported.

The drop in alert levels has allowed for the trading of goods to recommence online, and there have been multiple reports of buyers using false bank transfer confirmations and falsified digital documents to confirm payments have been made.

Police are actively investigating reports of this form of scamming, and encourage anyone who has fallen victim to this scam to report it to Police.

Police advise people to buy and sell off regulated websites such as Trade Me and from legitimate stores or companies.

If you decide to conduct transactions and exchanges off social

media, Police urge you to ensure the money is in your account before handing over the item and to verify the funds are cleared with your bank.

Communicate with the buyer, so they are aware of your conditions of purchase and sale and consider dealing with cash only.

Police recommend discontinuing transactions where there is a

suspicion of dishonesty or fraud.

Trust your instincts, if it’s too good to be true or sounds like a scam it probably is, and there will always be another opportunity to trade.

We are actively targeting offenders who commit volume and fraud offending and we will hold them accountable for their actions.

Police urge members of the community to report any suspicious activity to give Police the best chance of catching offenders.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of crime should call Police on 111 if it is happening now, or on 105 if it has happened.

Curly leaf stone fruit : By Wally Richards

About this time each year our stone fruit trees, nectarine and peach start to flower and product the new seasons foliage.

Dependent on the weather conditions the foliage is likely to catch the disease we call curly leaf.

Generally speaking the disease does not kill the tree but in server cases I have heard this can happen.

Some, or all of the leaves will get these reddish blisters on them which look a bit unsightly for a while.

The problem is that these leaves are not catching and converter the sunlight to carbohydrates (energy) and the fruit that has set will not have sufficient energy to continue growing and some (or all) the seasons crop will be effected or lost completely.

The blister leaves later fall off and are replaced with new leaves which is too late for the crop.

Sometimes there is a little late infection happens to the second set of leaves but that is usually minor.

When the leaves start to emerge there is about a 6-8 week danger period and then it is usually over for the season.

In the past copper sprays have been recommended to be applied with Raingard (The disease attacks when it rains as dormant spores are splashed up onto the leaves).

The idea is to cover the leaves with a film of copper to prevent the disease from establishing.

As the leaves are growing you need to repeat the Wallys Liquid Copper Spray with Raingard every 7 to 10 days to protect the new growth.

That means a weekly spray for 6-8 weeks.

Even then you may still have some leaf lost.

I have also in the past suggested adding potassium permanganate at a quarter a teaspoon per litre of spray with the Wallys Liquid Copper and Raingard.

A number of years ago I had suggested that sprinkling Wallys Ocean Solids under the trees from trunk to beyond the drip line.

I have had some positive feedback from a couple of gardeners that it had helped. I presume the sodium chloride (salt) killed the spores on the soil.

The reason for the salt was to increase the minerals available to the tree helping it withstand the disease as was described in Sea-90.

(A book on using sea water or raw sea salt for its minerals which we duplicated with Wallys Ocean Solids) Another product we had imported years ago which I think we called Wallys DE at the time it was suggested that the foliage could be sprayed with that to combat the disease.

Once again I had some favorable reports from gardeners that used it.

We have imported the same product again and called it Wallys Cell Strengthening Spray with Silicon Super Spreader added in a 500mil bottle.

The same sprays that are used for combating the Psyllids on potatoes, tomatoes, tamarillos etc plus preventing the rust on garlic.

This season on my nectarine tree I am going to use this spray weekly as the leaves are growing.

If there are flowers on the tree spraying should be only done last thing in the day before dusk so that pollination

will have completed for the day.

There is no need to add Raingard to this spray as the Super Spreader will drive the silicon into the foliage strengthening them and making more resilient to the disease.

This same spray can be used to advantage on tomatoes and garlic plus any preferred plants.

A few years ago I had a conversation with an elderly gardener and during so the topic of curly leaf on stone fruit came up.

She told me that she never had any problems on her stone fruit which she had grown all her trees from stones!

She also said that one time at a garden centre she saw dwarf nectarine and peach trees which she purchase being a novelty.

These were planted with her sown from seed trees but the dwarfs every year had bad curly leaf problems.

Her stone grown ones were never affected even through the dwarfs had ample disease spores.

My understanding is that all purchased trees including the dwarf are grafted which make them inherently weaker that self sown of stone grown.

I had a self sown one at one place I lived and in the second year I had a small crop so they do not take long to produce.

Growing from stones placed where you want the tree to mature is a very inexpensive way of obtaining a few fruit trees.

Just pick a nice fruit you like and plant the stone.

The resulting fruit may vary from the fruit you picked as it will not be true to that variety but likely very similar.

Community spirit awards Wainuiomata Community Board are seeking nominations for the 2021 Spirit Awards.

Wainuiomata is renowned for its community spirit and each year board members have the difficult decision in selecting recipients for the awards.

Everyone nominated is deserving and the board are looking for individuals who have given outstanding voluntary service in Wainuiomata which has contributed to the spirit of our community.

Deputy chair of the board Dawn McKinley says it is important that people provide as much detail as

possible about what their nominee has achieved, what makes them stand out against others and why they think they are deserving.

Build long term resilience By: Gerald Rillstone Community organisations have been working together since the lockdown making sure Lower Hutt whanau have been able to get quick access to support initiatives.

Local demand across the city during lockdown increased three-fold, with more than 500 food parcels a day being delivered. As well, community groups reported a new cohort of families requesting support: those who had previously been able to manage, but who were now tipping over into food insecurity.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the impacts of COVID-19 continue to bring underlying issues to the city’s surface, and a team effort is required to build resilience for those challenging situations.

worked together to coordinate the Collective, a group of like-minded organisations that have been managing the kai response across the city.

“The Collective evolved out of an initial partnership between our marae and Common Unity during lockdown 2020, and it is aligned to the aims and intentions of the broader Hutt Valley Food Resilience Network,” Teresea says.

“The collective was formed during the August lockdown and now includes Lower Hutt Foodbank, Orongomai Marae, Stokes Valley Food Bank, Te Aroha Kai, and Hutt City Salvation Army,” she says.

“We work together under a central hub to coordinate and distribute food to households across Te awa Kairangi.”

Julia Milne of Common Unity says that working together and sharing resources has given the collective greater reach.

Old toy smoking again By: Gerald Rillstone Two old 1950’s battery powered toys that had languished at Wainuiomata Museum have had a refresh and are now lighting up and puffing smoke once again.

Wainuiomata Museum president Gavin Wallace says the toys had been sitting in the museum for years and he always had an interest in seeing if he could get them working once again.

“We had a couple of old toys that had been sitting for years and none of them worked and I thought bugger it, if those old guys in the TV show, The Repair Shop, can fix these things up why can’t I,” Gavin says.

A retired scientist who still does a bit of science Gavin gently got stuck in to the smoking,beer swilling bear, to see what he could do.

The toy when it was working would smoke and drink from a mug filled with water so he had his work cut out to get the 1950’s Japanese toy working again.

With a degree of difficulty he got the bear smoking again.

“Being from the 1950’s I wasn’t sure what the hell they used then to get it smoking it had a bladder inside and a heating coil and one of my mates said he is probably vaping and so I tipped some vaping fluid in there and it works fine,” he says.

Gavin says the toys were donated to the museum years ago by a local but they never worked and when he took them apart they were mostly electrical inside and everything was in good condition.

“Even the old light bulbs in them that are 70 years old still worked.”

“I did put a new Led in the nose and replaced the nose because it was rubber and all perished and was missing an ear and one of the hands was broken so I fixed it up,” Gavin says.

“I am pleased to get them going again.”

The Wainuiomata Historical Museum exists to encourage and promote the study of and interest in history generally and of that relating to Wainuiomata and its immediate surrounding areas in particular.

The Museum is on the Main Road, Wainuiomata - in the grounds of the Wainuiomata Primary School. Normal hours: 2pm-4pm every Sunday and by arrangement - Admission: $2 per Adult, 50c per child.

Give Jordie the kicking duties Time to give Jordie Barrett the goal kicking duties fulltime.

He is the best goal kicker out of the three options, Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga.

Is he perfect? Not even close.

The All Blacks have such a rich history of quality goal kickers that not one of the trio will ever go down as one of the greats off the

kicking tee but the time has come to commit to one player through to the next Rugby World Cup. In giving Jordie the kicking duties, I’m also suggesting he become the No 1 fullback.

The Beauden at 15 and Richie at 10 experiment must be done away with and the headless-chicken antics of Damian McKenzie must

also be put on the back burner.

Jordie is an attacking threat from the back, good under the high ball (when he doesn’t kick his leg out) and can read the game well.

Beauden has looked well off the pace since returning from Japan.

Yes, he is apparently carrying a hamstring injury but Richie

is the best 10 in the country and Beauden should be used, much like McKenzie, off the bench against tiring defensive lines and lethargic forwards.

By giving Jordie the kicking duties the All Blacks will have some continuity in a key area heading into the next Rugby World Cup in 2023.

In a try-happy era, accurate goal kicking seems to have slid down the priority list but in a tight World Cup knockout game, it can be the difference between success and failure as tries often dry up.

Jordie may not be everyone’s cup of tea but committing to him early could provide big dividends, in crucial games down the road.

New GM for motorcycle sports

The governing body for motorcycle sports in New Zealand will have a new person holding the handlebars from next week.

Motorcycling New Zealand (MNZ) has just appointed Bay of Plenty man Michael Kerrisk into the role of General Manager and he begins work from Monday.

The 55-year-old Kerrisk has a long association with motorcycling and has worked as a motorcycling engineer in Tokoroa and then Mount Maunganui with his own business.

“I grew up on a farm and have always had a passion for motorcycles and motorcycling,” he said.

“Even now I try to get out on a bike with a bunch of friends whenever the opportunity arises.

Happily married to wife Leanne, Kerrisk stepped into the role of dealership partner for Blue Wing Honda in Auckland and, although currently based in New Zealand’s largest city, the couple will shortly be moving to Papamoa.

He says he is greatly looking forward to his new challenge at the helm of MNZ. “I am always up for new challenges,” he said. “I want to see what is working well and keep that going, while also looking at where positive changes can be made.

“There has been a big spike in interest in all things related to motorcycling in the past few years and I’d like to further encourage the blossoming of female participation in the sport and continue that growth.”

MNZ president Paul Pavletich, himself a leading motorcycle racer and heavily involved with rider tuition during the working week, said he was thrilled to welcome Michael Kerrisk on board.

“The MNZ Board went through a lengthy recruitment process and have full confidence that Mike, with his sports administration and motorcycle industry knowledge, will do a fine job in rolling out the board’s plans,” said Pavletich.

“He will add a lot of value with his skills and strengths.”
