Hundreds getting vaccinated

Vaccinations at the Wainuiomata Marae Covid-19 clinic have got off to a great start with around 100 to 140 locals a day getting vaccinated.

Seaview-based Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services run the clinic and clinical lead Cherrie Matthews says the clinic is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am till 4pm every week until Christmas.

“Once we gauge the demands of the community and what people are wanting we could have evening clinics and weekend clinics,” she says. Continued page 2.

At the moment we are only treating a certain demographic but that will change when they get word from the ministry.

“We are treating Maori and Pacific aged 55 and over and their household contacts that are 16 plus,” Cherrie says.

“For example if we have a 65 year-old who lives with his daughter and her partner who are in their 30’s and 40’s and they have two teenage children who are 17 and 19 we will vaccinate

that whole family.”

Once someone has had the first vaccination they are due for their second one after 21 days to be fully vaccinated she says.

“It doesn’t have to be an exact 21 days, as long as it’s at least 21 days and over is fine, if they haven’t had it and they are hitting day 30, it is still ok it is still effective.”

Cherrie says in the future they may also look at giving the flu vaccine and the MMR ( measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine as

well.

“We are looking at the logistics of that and staffing,” Cherrie says.

Because Kokiri Marae Health and Social services has other contracts to look after as well such as cervical screening and outreach immunisation programmes they need to make sure all the bases are covered.

She said transport could be provided to elderly or disabled people who had difficulty accessing the clinic, and they could

contact the DHB for assistance and information on this.

Getting vaccinated you will need two doses of the vaccine to get full protection.

The second appointment will be at least three weeks after your first. You need to have at least two weeks between your flu vaccine and your COVID-19 vaccine.

If you have had a flu vaccine in the last two weeks, you will need to book your COVID-19 vaccine for later.

Floral thief strikes again For the second time in as many months a floral tribute has been stolen from a grave at the Pioneer Church on Coast Road.

Both of the posies were made by a local florist for the family of an 11 year old Wainuiomata schoolgirl who died in 1965.

On the first occasion the arrangement was in a vase which had formed part of the headstone for the past 56 years and the vase was also stolen.

However the latest one was individually wired into oasis which was then imbedded in the recess where the vase formerly was.

According to the florist it would take a determined thief to steal the arrangement.

“This arrangement would have been very difficult to remove and would have taken some time for the thief to do, so certainly not the work of children.”

Obviously the family of Susan Anderson and the hardworking group who lovingly tend the beautifully restored Pioneer Church and the gardens surrounding it, are very upset at this latest theft.

A member of the Church committee commented ....”we just cannot believe that anyone can need a small artificial bouquet of flowers so badly that they would steal it from a child’s grave A floral tribute has been stolen for the second time from (twice!)”

Free meningococcal B vaccine

Around 1,500 people who are at higher risk of contracting meningococcal disease will soon be able to get the meningococcal B vaccine for free.

Meningococcal disease can lead to serious illnesses including meningitis (inflammation of your brain membranes) and septicaemia (blood poisoning).

The vaccine will be funded from 1 July 2021, for close contacts of meningococcal cases of any meningococcal group (A, C, W, Y or B), or people who are at higher risk of contracting meningococcal B because they have reduced immune function due to certain health conditions.

Pataka celebrates Positives comes out of COVID

One of the positives to come out of COVID has been the Kokiri Marae Pataka in Wainuiomata and this week they celebrated their first year in operation.

It is a Kokiri Marae based initiative that has grown from the heart.

When the country went into lock-down Kokiri Marae Hauora general manager Teresea Olsen realised that Wainuiomata really needed a good food bank and starting out small it soon out grew the limited space they had.

Teresea canvased the commu-

nity and they were lucky enough to be offered space at Saint Peters Hall in Wise Street and from there the Pataka flourished.

Pataka leader Janice Awatere says they started out with a small staff of around four and the rest of the help came from volunteers.

One of those volunteers who has been with the Pataka from the start is Janice’s son in-law Joe Taylor.

“The reason I first jumped in was to help mum to tautoko and I ended up really liking the kaupapa and as well your heart gets filled doing the work and

Serving people and the manaaki is what it is all about Janice says.

They occasionally get helpers ordered to do community service from the court and they enjoy the atmosphere so much through helping the community they often keep coming back to help once they have completed their hours.

“We get a lot of support too from Pak’n Save, Kaibosh and the Remakery and certain families and the High School help out as well,” Janice says.

Seal silly season arrives At the height of the demand during COVID the team was going outside of Wainuiomata to Wellington, Porirua, Tawa, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and reached right up to Waitangirua.

The Pataka is registered as a food-bank and is open from 9am to 3pm five days a week and they do deliver and walk-ins are welcome.

All that has to be given is a name, phone number and an address and how many in their bubble.

“We do monitor the need and if required we can offer a wraparound service,” Janice says.

People enjoying the country’s coastlines are being urged to admire NZ fur seal/kekeno from a safe distance, as the mammals come ashore for the winter.

Between May and September young seals and male seals of any age can be spotted as they leave their breeding colonies, explore, and rest.

Although very charismatic, kekeno are wild animals and should be treated with respect. DOC’s advice is to never touch or handle a seal as they can be very aggressive if threatened.

People should keep a distance of at least 20 metres from kekeno, if possible, and not get between the seal and the sea.

If you see a seal which is severely injured, being harassed, or in obvious danger, call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).

High density housing I’m seeing these high density town house buildings popping up in Wainuiomata more and more recently. In particular the ones in Fitzherbert Rd at 28 and 26 and 3 Best St. These housing developments are great however there is no off street part included with these houses.

I count 31 new houses in these developments which could each have two cars per unit.

Where are all these cars going to park?

I asked the real estate agents selling these houses and the response was ‘on the street’. Well there is no parking on Fitzherbert Rd outside these addresses.

Surely this can’t be ok?

The neighbouring house owners can’t be happy about all these cars parking outside their houses.

Wainuiomartians wake up!

To all Wainuiomartians. Wake up and listen up. have you not seen or heard the trucks coming over the hill every day. Have you not read the letters in the Wainui news about the Clean fill that is in your backyard that should never have been re-opened as it was deemed full, part of it is on a floodplain and it was deemed toxic.

There is a group concerned with holding the council and the cleanfill operator accountable for any breaches of conditions under which the clean fill operates called The Council Liaison Group - (CLG for short).

The community attendees in the group have an assurance from Council attendees on the CLG that we will not have another Clean fill in Wainui but if

the council decides not to stay involved a private operator may put in an application and as there is a possible new site in Wainui, we need your voice in the ear of the Mayor, Your ward councillor and the city wide councillors even our representative on regional council and MPS to make doubly sure they do not rubber stamp any proposal. Other areas around the country are fighting similar issues and losing ground.

What we do here has national importance as not all have the luxury of a CLG group. Please, please support us and our unique environment.

Regional ownership of transport assets for better quality of service Greater Wellington is urging significant change to the Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM) to bring transport assets under the control of regional councils to create greater certainty in delivering quality public transport services.

According to Greater Wellington’s submission, a change to ownership of public transport assets would provide a range of benefits.

“Ownership or at least control of the

assets will strengthen our role in providing public transport, allowing us to move from the side lines on significant issues such as employee terms and conditions and workforce planning.

It will bring us influence and the ability to play a stronger role in ensuring continuity of service delivery,” says Greater Wellington’s chair of the Transport Committee, Cr Roger Blakeley.

The Revolution Begins A perfect opportunity to see outstanding talent this week with Wainuiomata’s Little Theatre bringing the iconic musical theatre show, Les Miserables, to the stage from June 23rd.

This show has been nearly 18 months in the making for us says Production Manager Trevor Williams. Auditions were held in January 2020 and we were scheduled to start rehearsing in March 2020 just as Covid struck.

Luckily, most of the cast and crew were able to recommit to the 2021 production dates and have been hard at work for the past five months.

This is a big deal for a small community theatre group but will be a great opportunity to showcase our local talent.

Opening night is Wednesday 23rd June and the show runs until the 10th of July.

Screen impact New research sheds light on how Kiwi preschoolers’ use of screen media may affect the development of executive functions, such as inhibitory control which helps children to manage their impulses and behaviour.

Two recently published studies using information from this country’s largest longitudinal

study of child development, Growing Up in New Zealand, looked at the prevalence of preschoolers’ screen time; identified predictors of higher screen time for children at two years of age; and investigated how pre-schoolers’ screen time could impact on executive functions and symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity.

Vaccinations for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand The COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the general population starts from the end of July.

Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has built momentum steadily since February. We are vaccinating around 100,000 people a week at the moment. In the second half of the year we hit top speed and everyone in New Zealand aged 16 and over will be able to be vaccinated.

Moving to the general population So far, vaccinations have been made available to those most at risk of getting COVID-19 to limit the chances of it getting into the wider population.

With more vaccine supply coming on, and having ramped up our infrastructure, vaccinations for everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over (the general population) start from 28 July.

This is a very large group of people. To make this flow smoothly, we will break this down by age bands.

All people aged 60 plus can book their vaccinations from 28 July.

Then, two weeks later, people who are 55 plus. From there, new age bands will be opened up every 2–3 weeks based on confirmed deliveries of the vaccine and the speed of rollout to earlier groups.

By mid to late August, invitations should be open for people over 45. By mid to late September, invitations should be open for those over 35, with everyone else being eligible from October.

Invitations Most people will get a direct invitation to book – either by email, text, phone call or in the post. You will then be able to book through Book My Vaccine, a new national booking system that will be online from 28 July, or phone a new national call centre. Availability of booking slots (the date, time and place you can be vaccinated) will vary between district health board (DHB) regions.

Once you are eligible to be vaccinated, you can be vaccinated at any time. There is no cut off.

Registration Even if your age band isn’t open, everyone aged 16 and over will be able to go to Book My Vaccine to register for an invitation from 28 July. Registration means we will be certain to have your correct contact details and when your age group is opened, you will get an invitation telling you it’s your turn to book.

In celebration of all the volunteers in the community for Volunteer Week we profile Wainuiomata’s Kirsty Truman.

Lock-down last year gave Wellington Free Ambulance Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Kirsty the opportunity to reflect on life.

She came to the reliasation she tended to live a very ‘comfortable’ lifestyle and decided 2020 was going to be the year she began to start stepping outside her comfort zone and change things up a bit.

Kirsty’s decision to volunteer at her local fire brigade in Wainuiomata stemmed from a desire to help her community, the same reason she wanted to become a paramedic.

“Becoming a volunteer firefighter was definitely stepping

outside of my comfort zone, but it also allows me to further serve my community, in a different way,” Kirsty says.

Both of Kirsty’s roles complement one another especially being able to apply her medical and clinical skills to her role as a firefighter.

The breadth of new skills she has learnt has been extensive.

“I’ve learnt how to fight and suppress different types of fires, donning and wearing breathing apparatus, new lifting/patient extrication techniques, different search and rescue techniques and motor vehicle extrication.”

“As a firefighter I’ve been able to learn greater hazard and risk awareness which I can apply when approaching scenes in my ambulance work too,” she says.

The role of a firefighter too is so varied, it isn’t all just about firefighting, says

Kirsty.

“We go to a huge variety of call-outs, and no two callouts are the same.”

One of the biggest challenges adapting to her new volunteer role was fitting this in around existing work and family commitments.

“Volunteering is rewarding but it is a really big commitment and adjusting to training commitments, having to change plans and leave family to attend a callout was quite a big adjustment,” says Kirsty.

“It’s awesome though, I’ve been welcomed into the Wainuiomata Brigade as if I’m a member of their massive fire brigade family.”

Kirsty says the best thing about volunteering is not only the great feeling of being able to help people in vulnerable situations, but also it feels like she’s gained 40+ new family members.

Enliven Connect looking for volunteers Enliven Connect is a volunteer buddy programme designed to help people with early-stage dementia, and elders who are facing life alone or disconnected from their community.

The programme works by matching volunteers with community members who have been identified as needing support.

“We hear of so many reasons why people end up lonely, isolated or without support – especially now that families are so geographically spread,” says Enliven Connect coordinator Jo Rea. Volunteers who join the programme are supported to spend regular, quality time with their ‘buddy’, by supporting them to continue their everyday activities, interests and hobbies.

“Our volunteers usually take people out, either for a cup of tea, do some shopping, or even watch a movie together,” Jo says.

“Sometimes this means going to someone’s house for a cuppa, or going out for a walk and having a chat,” Jo says.

Enliven Connect was established in 2018 and its services cover Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley.

Jo says the programme looks after just over a dozen elders in the community and they are looking for more volunteers to replace some who have moved on.

She says ideal volunteers for Enliven Connect are those who are caring, reliable

and friendly, with excellent communications skills.

Positive ageing service Enliven has more than 260 volunteers donating their time in its homes across the lower North Island.

CAB serving community since 1979 Citizens Advice Bureau Petone has been serving the community of Southern Hutt and Wainuiomata since 1979.

We have a great team of well-trained volunteers, and we regularly learn new skills.

It’s also great to be actively

involved in our community, using our knowledge and experience to help people.

Being a CAB Petone volunteer is incredibly rewarding.

On any given day, we could be asked about anything under the sun – from tenancy rights,

locating a support group or having documents signed by a JP, to finding out whether a person is entitled to a benefit.

We work alongside our clients with the aim of helping them know their rights and to feel empowered to act on

them.

I would go to Japan I have a friend there and it sounds lovely.

On the 21st of June the Northern hemisphere have their summer solstice and we, our winter solstice.

The shortest day means the longest night which also equates to the shortest hours of natural light.

Plants are really effected by short light hours and one of the main reasons that growth is so slow during the middle of winter.

If you give plants 24/7 of light then they never stop growing, which is a trick some nursery and glasshouse owners use to get plants moving at this time.

Over the next few weeks your garden plants will start to respond to the increasing amount of light each day.

Buds will start to swell as we enter into spring. June is also the beginning of the new year of gardening and the time for you to start for another season.

The first thing to do is to make a list of what you are going to grow this season in annual flowers and vegetables.

Seed potatoes won’t be far away for instance. (In fact some garden centres have them already).

Once you have your list, then you can visit your local garden centre and pick out the packets of seeds of the plants you wish to grow.

The hardy types can be started anytime now, for planting out after they are hardened off.

The time frame from obtaining seeds, germinating, pricking out, growing on and then hardening off is about 8 weeks or more. That takes us into August and a nice early start.

Cabbages, lettuce, silverbeet are good early choices to start now.

Being the keen gardeners that many of us are, we use methods to beat the system.

For instance a length of plastic film (growers plastic) and a number of lengths of No 8 wire can be used to

start off seeds or seedlings early in spring.

You bend the wire to form good sized loops which are placed about every 30cm into the prepared soil. The top of the loop should be about 30 cm above soil level.

The distance between, where each end of the loops enter the ground, should be between 30 to 40 cm.

Lay your plastic film along the row of loops and on the prevailing wind side, cover the plastic edge that’s laying on the ground (outside of the loops) with soil.

Now along the row, under the loops sow your dwarf beans, carrots or parsnips etc. Once sown and lightly watered in with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

Bring the plastic over the hoops and secure to the ground with lengths of old 100x50mm (4 x 2)wood. The ends of this low tunnel house are also secured with wood.

On sunny days there will be a build up of condensation inside the plastic which is not healthy if allowed to happen, day after day.

So you remove the wood and fold back the plastic to the earth side of the row, for a couple of hours, on nice sunny days.

The shelter and sun trap the plastic offers, warms the soil and your seeds germinate. The plastic allows the plants to establish quicker and can be left on till the plant’s foliage come near to touching the plastic.

It is important that you do pull back the plastic on sunny days for a few hours. A few days before removing the plastic for good, you need to harden up the plants and a spray of Vaporgard is ideal for this.

This method is a cheap way to grow rows of vegetables or flowers quickly, early in the season or sometimes late

in the season for some crops.

The above is designed to do in a month or so but you can construct it any time and start to warm the soil under the plastic to later plant seeds.

Seedlings obtained from garden centres now, can be planted under this tunnel of plastic, where they will grow much quicker and give you early crops of vegetables or flowers.

The plastic will give you protection from bird damage but slugs and snails may be able to get to the plants so spray the seedlings and soil under the plastic with Liquid Copper.

A layer about 1cm deep of sawdust around the seedlings and over the ground under the plastic can help.

Spray the sawdust with the Liquid Copper and Raingard about every 2 weeks.

Birds are hungry at this time and you will likely find that the flowers of your polyanthus are being eaten, especially the blue ones. Place some Bird Repellent Ribbon to protect the flowers and/or elsewhere throw out bread or cheap grain to feed the poor hungry birds.

As I have free ranging chooks in my back yard there are big populations of sparrows and other birds that wait in the trees at 8am and 4pm, which are the times the chooks get feed their mash or wheat.

Germinate hardy seeds in punnets on a sunny windowsill in a warm room. As soon as there is a show of germinating leaves place the punnet in the glasshouse or under a plastic tunnel as described above.

When the seedlings are big enough to transplant, prick out into punnets or cell packs (even better) and grow on till they are big enough to place in the garden under another plastic tunnel.

This will give you a great early start.

Light festival celebration Wainuiomata’s Dhamma Gavesi Meditation Centre will play host to The Light Festival organised by the Sri Lankan Community in Wellington.

The highlight of the festival will be the display of a pandol (thorana) depicting the life story (birth, enlightenment, and death) of Lord Buddha.

A thorana is a decorative freestanding piece of art A solid or architecture, popular in south-east Asia.

The Sri Lankan com-

munity throughout New Zealand, especially in the South Island, have funded a thorana to be made.

The team have been working on the ornamental piece for the past five months, and it has cost $9000 to make.

The pandol is illuminated with 6500 light bulbs and 400 light design patterns.

With height over 25 feet and 20 feet wide, this is a must see spectacle.

This will also be the first time a pandol is erected in Wellington.

The pandol was first erected in Invercargill by the Sri Lankan Community there for the Vesak celebration in May. The display will open to public at the Dhamma Gavesi Meditation Centre 15A Coast Road, Wainuiomata from 26th June to 3rd July from 7pm to 9pm.

NRL flexes entertainment muscle over Super Rugby You have to hand it to the NRL. Every weekend their competition products are compelling, entertaining matchups that keep both fans and neutrals coming back for more.

I’ve never been one to subscribe to the rugby v league debate.

People can enjoy both without turning it into a matter of allegiances.

However, on a weekend where Super Rugby had another underwhelming final in a competition

which structure was illogical, the NRL kept delivering.

The Penrith Panthers and Melbourne Storm are clearly the two best teams when fully fit.

Nathan Cleary, Panthers halfback, is the most pivotal player in the sport and he sets alight his team to play some scintillating football.

With exception of the Warriors’ turgid 10-6 loss to the Newcastle Knights, each of the games over the weekend were a fun watch.

Even the blowout games like the South Sydney Rabbitohs 46-0 thumping of the under-fire Brisbane Broncos had some stellar free-flowing football that rugby, at this present time bogged down by scrum resets and television reviews for foul play, could only dream of.

The NRL have also found a better balance in officiating high tackles over the past fortnight.

Less games are being affected by sin bins for high shots and while

the game may seem softer to the hardcore fans, there has at least been more common sense with the adjudications of late.

With the NRL bye this week due to State of Origin and no rugby between the international window, it will be a lean weekend for winter sport.

Then, the All Blacks play a potentially ho-hum set of tests against Fiji and Tonga to start their season.

It is hard to get excited about

games that don’t look compelling on paper.

It may be a nice opportunity for Pasifika players to shine but if the men in black don’t win by 50 points in each game, then questions will be asked of coach Ian Foster, who has little wriggle-room with the rugby public.

In the meantime, the NRL’s content continues to outshine rugby in a major way.

With the wind and the rain present, some might say it was perfect conditions for football over the weekend however it was another frustrating day for Gregg and the Reserves.

In a game they dominated against Wellington Marist, they walked away with nothing to show for it as they fell to a 4-2 defeat.

Halfbaked claimed back-to-back wins as they overcame strong Victoria University side at Kelburn Park.

Scott Addley continued his hot form in front of goal as they claimed a 3-1 win.

The Fiddick’s had a good day at the office winning 4-2 away to Tawa.

A double to Andy Olivier and strikes to Reed Collingwood and David Sinnott helped the boys to walk away from Onepoto Park with a win to their name.

It was a goal fest at Miramar Park however the Roundballs found themselves on the wrong end of the score sheet.

Despite 5 goals to Titov-Smith, Miramar scored 7 of their own to walk away 7-5 winners.

The Undertakers rocking their new strip faced Wellington Olympic at Te Whiti Park looking to get revenge on their 4-3 loss to the side a few weeks ago.

On a very muddy surface, it was very entertaining game that finished with the same score line.

However this time, The Undertakers walked away with the 3 points thanks to a goal mouth scramble finished off

Both Pasifika teams played at Richard Prouse and unlike last week where they both scored 7 goals and got 3 points, it was the Masters 6 side who walked away all smiles.

They beat Brooklyn 6-0 while the Masters 3 Pasifika side fell to a 5-2 defeat.

Out in Porirua, Bruce Kowalczyk scored a penalty with the very last kick of the game to earn his side a point in an entertaining 1-1 draw against Western Suburbs.

Sunday’s games were kicked off with the Under 17’s playing away to Seatoun.

The game was 1-1 until 3 goals in 8 minutes helped Wainui walk away 4-1 winners in a very wet and windy game at Te Whaea Turf.

The weather only seemed to get worse as the Women played host to North Wellington.

In a game where everyone struggled to stay on their feet due to a wet and muddy Richard Prouse Park, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

A Heather Smith goal and a player of the day performance from fill in goalkeeper Ashley Porter which included a penalty save, helped the girls go 2 games in a row undefeated.
