Life inspires stories By Megan Connolly

Local resident Kim Harris is a finalist in The Maori Literature Trust’s Pikihuia Awards in the Published Writer in English category, for her short story Kokiri ki Mua, Charge Forward. Kim entered her story on a whim one day, expecting nothing from it but was very happy when she opened her emails last month. “I was surprised because I legitimately didn’t expect it,” Kim says. The story itself was based on Kim’s own basic training when she joined the New Zealand Army in 2002. Continued on page 2. Kim’s stories go beyond the page At the end of the story, a female soldier is awarded the highest award from Basic Training and is the first female to do so. In real life, Kim was also the first female soldier to be awarded the Sergeant Major of the Army Award on a NZ Army Basic Training. Kim originally wrote the short story in 2014 as part of another story while she was living in Sydney, but totally forgot about it. To write her stories, Kim gets away from the hustle and away from her home. She finds a quiet nook at the Sea Salt Cafe at Days Bay and just writes. “I go there to detach from the city and the world.” With the Sea Salt Cafe being such a big part of her writing process, in the book, she named one of the main characters Sergeant Salt after it. “In my stories, everyone I’ve had a relationship with, I’ve named one of the characters in my story after,” Kim says. “I like to merge deep meaning into my work. No one will know but I will.” Kim named the Platoon after her cur rent partner Dan James and used a Victoria Cross at the end of the Platoon name as Dan’s great

Nominations open for local government positions: passionate people sought Nominations to stand for Mayor, council and local community boards open today for this year’s local government elections. Hutt City Council electoral officer Bruce Hodgins says that people who are passionate about their community and want to help shape the future of Lower Hutt should consider standing. “We’re looking for passionate

people who represent the vibrancy and diversity of our city. If you or someone you know wants to play a part in shaping Lower Hutt’s future, consider standing for a position.” For the first time since Hutt City Council was formed in 1989, the city will have a mixed representation model this election. Tam came for a holiday and never looked back

inbrief news

By Megan Connolly

Grab your gumboots again this weekend because there will be another session of tree planting at Waiu park this Saturday, July 27 from 9-30 and 12-30. The work will take place primarily in the wetland area where sedges and flax will mostly be planted. There will also be an opportunity for a hot cup of tea for a morning break. If you would like to know more, contact Gary on 021-2866282 or mistletoe1957@gmail.com.

Scotsman Tam Flynn came to New Zealand on a holiday in 1970 and loved it so much he never went home. Although Tam grew up in Scotland he has been to 29 countries and has travelled the world most of his life, but it is Wainuiomata, and its a community, that he fell in love with all those years ago. “I love this valley,” Tam says. As a big outdoorsman, Tam has engaged the landscape and outdoor activities that this country provides like tramping and fishing. He repairs fishing rods in his spare time for friends and family. In the past, he has repaired rods out of random parts and gives them away to people who might like them. The 75-year-old has had many jobs throughout his life he says like being “master grocer back home in Scotland”, a ski patroller for 13 years and working in transport for 32 years. “I never intended to end up in transport.” Tam built up a highly successful transport company’s branch in the Wellington region now known as Inter-Freight. “It started off with myself and a ute. Then 16 months later we had a sales rep, two staff, 13

storemen and 14 trucks.” It was successful because he “did it with honesty”. The first thing you will notice when you speak to Tam is his infectious positive attitude. “When people ask me ‘How are you?’ I answer ‘I’m always good. I’ve been better, but always good’,” he says. “I always live by yesterday is

gone, tomorrow you can’t do anything about, you can only do something about it today.” There isn’t much he would like to see and do, he says, except for visiting Vietnam and Cambodia. “I’ve had a great life.” It may have been the hills to climb that kept Tam here in New Zealand, but the highest

peak he has climbed is 15,000 feet in Austria. “I work on the principle that you’re the one making the decisions. If you don’t push yourself then you’re going nowhere. You’re like a rat in a wheel going in circles,” Tam says. Tam’s family, two daughters and five grandchildren, all live in Wainuiomata too.

Crabeater seal visits the Hutt river At the weekend the Department of Conservation translocated a crabeater seal from the Hutt River, which unfortunately died in transit. The seal was first spotted on Saturday morning in the Hutt River by a member of the public, who sent DoC a video of the

3

seal swimming. From the video, it appeared to be in a healthy condition and the species was unclear. Late on Sunday night, DoC received another call, reporting a seal that looked unwell. At 9am on Monday they went out to investigate.

The seal was a crabeater (Lobodon carcinophagus), a species mostly found in Antarctic waters and has only rarely appeared on New Zealand shores. The animal was lethargic and skinny and had some healing wounds along its side. A spokesperson says. “As there

are no facilities in the region that can manage adult seal rehabilitation, we decided the best option was to relocate it from the Hutt River to the Wainuiomata coast, a safe, quiet place where it could recover naturally.” “Sadly, the seal’s condition was too poor, and it died in transit.”

False alarm calls fire brigade By Megan Connolly

It wasn’t your typical day in Queen Street last Wednesday afternoon. The local fire brigade was called in when members of the public smelt burning. Three emergency response fire engines descended on the small one-way street and assessed the situation. Fortunately, there was no immediate threat to locals and it was a false alarm, a spokesperson from Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade says. Coincidentally there happened to be a fire drill at the Community Hub, unbe-

knownst to the staff, merely 10 minutes beforehand. For a young boy down the street, the sight of three large fire engines was quite exciting.

Especially when he got several waves back from the volunteer firefighters as they left in their trucks. Perhaps it was a situation

where it is ‘better safe than sorry’ and shows what wonderful work the local Volunteer Fire Brigade does for the community.

Bill’s passionate about people By Megan Connolly

Kiwi LPG owner Bill Mackie lived in Wainuiomata until he was 10 years old when he moved with his family to Akatarawas Valley but he says so many great memories were made during his time living here he still has a soft spot for the town. “Where I learnt to swim was the water under the bridge just before the Village,” Bill says. Growing up Bill always had a keen interest in engineering and eventually went on to work in pumping and irrigation for 12 years. Bill and wife Lori started Kiwi LPG on Bouverie Road Petone eight years ago after having had a small gas delivery service for many years. Kiwi LPG is an LPG gas cylinder refuelling service where you can bring any size or style for a refill. “The public can come with a gas cylinder and we can fill it up,” Bill says. “The advantage is when you have it filled up instead of

YOUth INSPIRE continues to inspire By Megan Connolly

YOUth INSPIRE Road Ready Rangatahi programme was a runner up at the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards during National Volunteer Week recently. The local programme aims to get youth into a car and driving with volunteer mentors to help them obtain their restricted drivers’ licenses. Spokesperson Emma Anderson says they are very thrilled to have received the prize. “It just validates the work we’re doing and it’s great to be able to acknowledge the volunteers who take our kids out on the streets every week,” Emma says. The not-for-profit group received a $250 voucher which will go towards a thank you morning tea for the volunteers with YOUth INSPIRE kaitiaki, Mayor Ray

Wallace, and to test fees for the driving programme. The Road Ready Rangatahi began in April and is still currently in its early stages as a pilot programme. “This award really helps us keep running and makes it easier to get funding moving forward,” Emma says. “It’s nice to stand alongside the other nominees and stand as an important part of the community.” Currently, there is a waiting list for hopeful young drivers due to the limited number of driving mentors and cars. However, YOUth INSPIRE is excited to be receiving a second car donated to them by Value Motors but they need some more mentors to step up. If you have time during the day to mentor local youth, contact Kerryn YOuth INSPIRE helps young drivers like Shamal Reddy become Road Ready for their Parke on 0272009149 or email driving@ restricted license. Why it’s Grease Lightning! By Megan Connolly

Wainuiomata High School’s production of Grease will open at the High School auditorium tomorrow at 7pm, with a second and final show on Friday evening. Tickets are available at the High School office and from Clive’s Chemist for $5. Grease is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School and follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the peer pressure, politics, personal core values, and love. Did you know Grease was a musical first staged in 1971 before it became the popular film adaptation in 1978 starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John? The show gets its name and inspiration from the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers.

Pick up your litter Dear Editor, I’m very disappointed to see a lot of litter along the road leading up to the Wainuiomata hill. I know the recycling station isn’t where it was and maybe people are just too lazy to figure where else to put it... but no one should be throw-

eco-friendly life and protect our wonderful landscape. Maybe we need to take a note for the school kids in our town who seem to know what’s up. MR Name and address supplied

Gabriel steps down as disability board chair Gabriel Tupou has stepped down as chairman of the Manaaki Ability Trust board, previously known as the Hutt Valley Disabled Resources Trust. He resigned the leadership role in June due to other commitments. Parent representative and deputy chair Ollie Kemp has stepped up to head the board. Appointed to the board in 2016, Gabriel became deputy chair and filled the vacancy of Chair in late 2017. “At first, I was hesitant to join because I had no experience with disability issues. My understanding could only be related through family

experience,” Gabriel says. “I eventually agreed to come on board because it was an opportunity to learn and I have a passion for advocating for those in our community who may feel they don’t have a voice. This has truly been a humbling and eye-opening experience.” Gabriel has ushered in some positive change for the short time he has served as chair. The centre was re-launched as the Manaaki Ability Trust in May of 2018 by the Minister of Social Development and Disability Issues Hon Carmel Sepuloni. “It’s all about creating a platform for our clients to thrive and achieve their goals,” he says. Though Gabriel will continue to serve as a member of the trust board, he also looks to the future. “I am considering how I might be of service to the wider community of Lower Hutt.”

Amaze-ZINE creations

By Megan Connolly

Susan and Bella Webber went along to the Beyond the Page Zine Machine programme at the Community Hub Library on Saturday afternoon. For the both of them it was their first time learning about and making a zine. PHOTO: Megan Connolly By Megan Connolly

It was a warm haven in the Community Hub Library compared to the bleak and rainy skies on Saturday afternoon for a Beyond the Page programme ‘Zine Machine’. For those unsure, a zine is a small circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Funnily enough, zines have been featured in the Wainuiomata News before as an afterschool programme Zine for Teens but this one was all about introducing younger people to the beauty of zines. Mother Susan Webber and

ten-year-old daughter Bella popped along to the session without knowing anything about them. Thankfully with library kaitiaki Amanda Dickson’s help, they got stuck into it and had a great time. “I didn’t know anything about zines before this. Maybe I’ll show my sister and dad,” Bella says. Bella was full of ideas, helping inspire her mum and Amanda with their ideas. Her own zine was about a trip to the beach involving pictures and a detailed story. “I’ve been drawing ever since I was a baby basically,” she says.

7

“Writing a zine is less scary because I don’t have to write as much as a normal story.” Mum Susan created several mini zines including topics like top ten words, an ‘annoying things’ zine and another for her other daughter about jumping in muddy puddles. “It’s great to learn and a no-pressure way of experiencing zines,” mum Susan says. “I’m sad I’ve missed out on this whole world. “I’ve enjoyed making my first zine collection. I’ll be doing it with the kids at home, I think.” Susan and Bella got to take their creations home and hope to make more zines in the future.

Rehearsals for Wainuiomata Little Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia have been in full swing now for over a month and the cast has already caught ABBA fever. The show, which is set to open on October 2 at the old High School auditorium on Moohan Street, boasts a cast of around 28 performers including locals and people from out of town. There’ll be some familiar faces on the stage and veterans of the company plus several newcomers, some of whom have never set foot on a musical theatre stage. Director of the show Trevor Williams has been looking forward to putting on this show for quite some time. “We’re doing it for the community,” Trevor says. Tickets for the show are only $10 to keep the costs down and accessible to everyone, he adds.

“It’s a local entertainment option because there’s no other choice like this. “That’s the basis we’ve always worked on.” The Mamma Mia movie was based on the stage show of the same name that opened in London on the West End in 2004. Much like the film, the stage is set in 2000 on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi and follows a young girl named Sophie who invites her three potential father’s to her wedding, much to her mother Donna’s surprise. Told through ABBA songs, an ensemble cast and fun dance numbers, it’s a show the whole family can enjoy. “Everyone should know the songs and hopefully if the audience feels like it, they’ll get up and dance,” Trevor says. Interesting fact: the day the show opens, October 2, is the day Gimmie Gimmie Gimme was released by ABBA in 1979.

The super trouper lights are going to find Siobhan Metuarii (Tanya), Delwyn Monk (Donna) and Cathy Davel (Rosie) when Wainuiomata Little Theatre's production of Mamma Mia opens in October. PHOTO: Megan Connolly

Youth bond over kai and basketball PHOTOS: Megan Connolly By Megan Connolly

What better way to de-stress after the start of term and a Monday than to hang out playing basketball while having a feed? Tamariki Kai is a new afterschool activity that brings together the youth and adults in a fun and

relaxed environment. Aroha Te Kani, a library kaitiaki, helps some volunteers cook up a “feed” of sausages and bread. “It’s about building connections between adults, staff and the kids. And what better way to bond than through food,” she says. The programme runs from

3.30pm at the half basketball court at the back of the Community Hub library, close to Wainuiomata road. Even if basketball or sports isn’t your thing, there is plenty of space to make new friends and just chill. “It’s about spreading those positive feelings for the future,” Aroha says.

Connecting through K’Nex By Megan Connolly

Young children were connecting over K’Nex last Wednesday at the Community Hub Library. Following on from the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes that have been running for youngsters, building with K’Nex helps shape the mind and develop problem solving skills. If you were to compare K’Nex, they are like the older brother to Lego. It’s the upgrade. Asha Scott and Reece Geursen from Hutt City Science were leading the charge again; encouraging young boys and girls to build bridges, motor cars and follow where their creativity takes them. “I really want to get young girls into it and encourage them to have a go,” Asha says. “But it’s perfect for all ages of kids. They’ll get a brain work out without even knowing it while having lots of fun.” K’Nex promotes spacial 3D thinking, focus, motor skills and strength and has been around for almost three decades. “It was cool to see some younger kids use their imagination and get out of their comfort Dad Tino Tekeu with Tisa McLean-Tekeu creating a bridge out of K'Nex last week. with Jacob Page

A week on and it still hurts It’s OK to still be hurting - proud but hurting. It’s been a week since the Black Caps tied the Cricket World Cup final and left Lord’s trophy-less. Perhaps that’s part of the hurt, right? A week on, I’m still looking for a way to rationalise the outcome. There are few people to blame, for every error made by the Black Caps, there’s an equally important part of the game

where you can make an argument the team was just unlucky and was stopped by England, a team of destiny, who rode every bit of luck they could muster in one day to win the trophy. Captain Kane Williamson has received universal praise for his humility in the face of the situation. Already considered a worldclass player, his stock has risen globally after his frank comments

in the days following the game. English match-winner Ben Stokes, who was born in New Zealand, has been nominated for New Zealander of the Year and, given his feats, he is a frontrunner. The final was proof that great games can be played without the ball dominating the bat. In today’s age where boundaries and flat pitches are all the rage and 300+ scores are the norm, a

Premier rugby team makes Jubilee Cup Final Josh Robertson-Weepu has kicked Wainuiomata into the 2019 Jubilee Cup final, five years after their maiden visit with a 79th-minute penalty to overcome Oriental Rongotai 21-20 in their semi final at the Polo Ground recently. Rober tson-Weepu ca l mly stepped up and nailed the match-winning kick after only minutes earlier missing a sideline conversion from a TJ Va’a try which would have levelled the score up at 20-20. The match started in typical fashion with both sides bringing high intensity and physicality early on. However, it would be Oriental Rongotai that would open the scoring first when their centre broke through the Wainui defence and scored to the left hand upright to give Oriental Rongotai a 7-0 lead. Wainui struck right back through a magical John Monu grubber that Peter Umaga-Jensen would latch onto and power his way over the line to score. Robertson – Weepu would convert this try and add two more penalty kicks to give Wainui a

13-7 lead going into halftime. Wainui started the second half with some vigour in their defence but found themselves on the wrong side of the referee and Oriental Rongotai kicked two penalties to level the game up at 13 all. With 20 minutes to play Wainui was awarded a penalty inside Oriental Rongotai half, but Robertson-Weepu missed the kicked and then Wainui found themselves back deep in their own 22. From a lineout Oriental Rongotai scored from a set move, which had fans shaking their heads as it was quite obvious to everyone around the ground that Oriental Rongotai had set two halfbacks. After a long discussion between the ref and his touch judge, he awarded the try and Oriental Rongotai lead 20-13 with 15 minutes to play. Oriental Rongotai would then play their super-sub in, former All Black Ma’a Nonu. However, this seemed to lift the Wainui players and a massive hit from John Monu on the former All Black would result in a turnover.

Wainui would attack up the southern touch which resulted in a try to TJ Va’a from a lineout drive. As the Oriental Rongotai players started to fatigue, the Wainui players found a whole new energy level and would again march up the field this time getting the match-winning penalty from the referee for a head-high tackle and Robertson-Weepu kicked it over for a famous victory. Wainui was once again led by inspirational captain Greg Lealofi along with veterans John Monu, Glen Angus and Marvin Karawana who was defensively the best player on the field, a spokesperson says. Umaga- Jensen and Va’a again showed why they were signed by the Hurricanes straight out of school with their skill set on show again. Rober tson-Weepu’s m illion-dollar boot is proving very important at this time of the season. Wainui will now face Northern United this Saturday in the 2019 Jubilee Cup final to be held at the Petone Rec with kick-off at 2.30pm.

game where 241 played 241 was the best game of cricket of many of our lives. It may be many years before New Zealand contends for a Cricket World Cup. The next one is in India in four years which will start a run off unfavourable conditions for the team. That reality stings too. No one will come closer to winning a World Cup than Wil-

liamson’s men did. Public apologies from players seem pointless, there’s no blame from anyone. It’s been a cricketing haze as people tried to unpack what they sat through for nine hours. The problem is we are being told we lost, but the statistics don’t back that up. It’s still raw, it’s tough to talk about but rest assured, it will get easier.

Ulalei fundraise for club

Goal Defence Alofa Aberdein-Tapua’i gaining possession against NNCU2. PHOTO: Supplied By Toli Sagaga

The Ulalei will be holding their annual fundraiser this Friday, July 26 at 7pm which will help raise funds to support the club. “Please come along to the club’s Bingo fun night at the Wainuiomata Rugby League Rooms and be in to win some fantastic prizes,” a spokesperson says. There are mixed results for Ulalei Netball teams at the weekend. Premier 1 Ulalei Aute v NNCU 2 – lost 59-58 Ulalei Aute had a close game against Naenae Collegians United 2 (NNCU 2). Aute had a slow start with new attacking combinations of Sarah McLeod, Sina Tamaalii and Crystal Tomokino-Geale taking time to adjust. NNCU Two took advantage of this taking a comfortable 33-25 lead at the end of the first half. The introduction of Celine Antipas (from Team Pua) as centre, assisted the great defensive work from Alofa Aberdein-Tapua’i and Lilly Laban, by bringing the ball safely through the court and into shooters Tamaalii and McLeod to convert. Although the third quarter score

was even between the teams (1717), NNCU Two was still ahead 50-42 going into the final quarter. Co-coaches Alannah Laban and Uaea Apuula must have taken a leaf out of Noeline Taurua’s coaching book, as Aute came out firing in the final quarter. Defensively and on attack, the whole team combined well to provide turn-over ball and score down the other end. In the end, Aute just ran out of time, coming up short 59-58. Ulalei Pua v UHMU 1 – win 58-47 Ulalei Pua had a comfortable win against defending champions Upper Hutt Maidstone United 1. It was yet another fine display of precision passing and feeding into the shooters by midcourters Brittany Antipas and Renee Kassey. The defensive combination of Celine Antipas, Coral Winiata and Nykala Toheriri made it hard work for UHMU 1 to feed into the shooters, let alone convert. The crowd was also treated to some slick feeding between shooters Alicia Colledge and Alicia Hina in the shooting circle to get closer to the post. Team Pua remain at the top of the table with only two games of the round remaining.
