Brooke says Maori designs are part of the whakapapa of this country and its people and as a company they think New Zealand clothing is something that Kiwis everywhere should be proud to wear.

Launched in June with children’s dresses and T shirts they then developed further product lines and added pepi products to the label which sold out within 36 hours.

Brooke’s mum was a huge help with setting up the business, Brenda owns the highly succesful, Contemporary Korowai Designs and wanted it to be achievable for Brooke to continue as a stay at home mum.

Brooke is a mum of two with a five year-old and a nine month old Zaiden who has been a model for some of the products.

“Mum was part of the vision for the business and me and my sister ran with it, Brooke says.

“We had a vision for a clothing line that captured the essence of Aotearoa and it started off slowly at first and then we added a new line the swaddles.

We had a lot of people messaging us for them and it sort of built from there.”

Brenda’s Contemporary Korowai Designs already had a large following online and that also helped to get things under way, Brooke says.

“One thing that helped sell our swaddles the most was a Facebook page called Buy Maori Made and the response from that has been phenomenal.”

“My idea was to give customers a good range of colours and we have seven, lilac, forest green, soft grey, rose, sky blue, oatmeal and mint and the forest green and lilac have definitely been more popular and we have trimmed down the range a bit.”

There are new lines on the way to the market Brooke says. They have girls dresses and men and kids T’s all part of the range.

Coming up with ideas is a collaborative effort for the three women and seeing the opportunity and executing it has proved a winner for them.

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has released a damning report into the treatment of women in our prisons. It’s the latest in a long list of reports and reviews that show the criminal justice system is failing our w hine.

The person ultimately responsible for change, Minister of Corrections Kelvin Davis, needs to respond.

Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand Executive Director Meg de Ronde says the system as is, is causing further harm to people.

“We have reports, reviews and research from the Office of the Inspectorate, the Ombudsman, criminal justice lawyers, international experts, domestic academics, and the Human Rights Commission that all show a growing body of evidence that our criminal justice system is not only failing, but is perpetuating serious human rights concerns time and time again. It’s shameful.”

“We, like most New Zealanders, expect to see an environment that is conducive to rehabilitation and reintegration. People, no matter where they are in society, for whatever reason, deserve dignity and respect and equal opportunity to improve their lives. Right now, our prisons and other facilities are not only falling short of this, they are causing more harm.”

De Ronde says work on the Government’s strategy W hine - E rere ana ki te pae hou is welcome, with much potential there, however policy and practice need to link up.

“It’s great to see work underway here but we, along with a number of civil society organisations have been raising these concerns for some time and what seems to be missing is the link between policy and practice on the ground.

This means policy isn’t always reflected as it should be in the day-to-day lives of those living and working within our criminal justice system. With the potential of the new strategy,

it’s critical that there’s commitment to seeing change through at every level, which means a willingness to doing things differently and listening to those most impacted.”

She says the people who experience the criminal justice system, who can best articulate the parts not working, are not being listened to.

“The best gauge of change is through the people most impacted. We believe people with lived experience are still not being heard. We have recently launched Aotearoa Justice Watch along with JustSpeak and the Council for Civil Liberties to ensure those experiencing issues in the prison and policing system can speak out.

This will help to see where the problems are that may be going unaddressed or unheard.”

She adds previous calls to ban harmful practices have largely been ignored.

“While we recognise many of the changes needed will take time, this does not remove responsibility to take immediate action to prevent immediate harm. Practices such as cell buster extractions have no place in our prisons.

It has been nearly a year and the Minister Kelvin Davis has still not moved to prohibit cell buster extractions.”

The Wainuiomata Girls’ Brigade annual prizegiving saw the highest award given and 15 years of service recognised.

Wainuiomata’s Amy-Jean Winchester-Young was awarded the hightest award the Brigader Brooch - highest Girls’ Brigade award in New Zealand.

The Brigader Brooch is awarded to those who gain 40 points from the Brigader Programme over a minimum three year period.

Points towards this award are gained in four stages (ten points for each stage). A coloured Triangle Award is presented on completion of each of the first three stages. The Brigader Brooch is awarded on completion of the

Lisa Eagle was recognised for her dedication to the Wainuiomata Girls Brigade chapter, 15 years service recognition as a leader.

New blood needed

With less than four percent of New Zealanders donating blood the drive is on to encourage more donors in the Hutt with a newly opened centre at Avalon Pavillion.

The New Zealand Blood Service will be collecting both blood and plasma at Avalon Pavillion every Thursday and Friday with each donation having the potential to save up to three lives.

Donor Relations coordinator Summer Laraman says New Zealand needs over 4,000 donations every week and on average 80 New Zea-

landers need blood or blood products every day - 10 of these are in the Wellington and Hutt Valley area (on average).

She says plasma donations are used to make 11 different lifesaving products – including to treat accident and trauma victims, and patients who have compromised immunity for a range of reasons including autoimmune disorders, and some types of cancer.

“When donors download our app, they can make and manage their own bookings, and they will also receive an app notification to let them know when their blood has

been used,” Summer says.

Anyone interested in donating can book on the website (www.nzblood. co.nz), download the NZ Blood Service app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or call our call centre on 0800 448 325.

Added to this donor elegibility criteria for donating has changed this week so blood and plasma donations can now continue with the upper age limit for both firsttime blood or plasma donors being increased to 71, while existing donors may now be eligible to continue donating until the age of 81.

It is expected that more than 300

donors may benefit from this change.

The changes – which are among several implemented following NZBS’s review of its donor eligibility rules – take effect from Monday November 22.

Under the revised age criteria: Eligible individuals, aged between 16 and 71, can make their first donation of blood and plasma.

Donors, who have donated within the last two years, can donate until they turn 75. These donors may also be eligible to continue donating until the age of 81, subject to NZBS Medical Officer authorisation.

Lapsed donors, whose last donation was more than two years ago, may be eligible to donate after they turn 71, subject to approval by NZBS Medical Officer.

Other changes to donor eligibility criteria includes changes to some of the stand down periods donors must observe before they can give blood and plasma if they have certain medical conditions or have undergone a medical procedure. And if a person has recently had a tattoo or body piercing, the stand down period has been reduced to three months.

Students exhibition opens By: Gerald Rillstone Students from Wainuiomata High School launched their inspiring photographic works at the Wainuiomata Community Hub last week.

Attending the evening was Sarah Mead who set up track Zero, she says she set it up because it is so important for people to relate to climate change on a viseral level.

“Until you can relate to it in a way that tells your own story we are not going to get the surge and movement behind real change and climate change needs all of us,” Sarah says.

She says the students have a really powerful voice and hopes they understand it in their hearts.

“The students statements are really cool and powerful and we want to bring them together around the country.”

The students all workshopped climate issues with leading climate scientists and undertook a series of photographic workshops with photographers Virginia Woods-Jack, Raymond Sagapolutele and Te Kawa Robb.

In collaboration with the Festival, Track Zero - Arts Inspiring Climate Action has engaged young people across the region to share their views about climate change

through the arts.

Track Zero aims to deliver creative platforms for the arts, science and others, to inspire transformative climate action – working together to build a resilient, carbon-neutral society that is fair for all of us.

They organise projects and events to create a dialogue, increasing awareness around the urgency of the response that is needed.

We offer informative resources on climate change and climate action initiatives.

Track Zero actively seeks collaboration with artists, scientists and other sectors to tell the climate story in ways that engage people’s hearts and minds so they feel empowered to act on climate change – the biggest cultural challenge of our time.

Human-induced climate change is affecting our food, livelihoods, security and our very existence. The Paris Agreement aims to keep temperature rise this century well below 2ºC and drive efforts to limit the increase to 1.5ºC. Scientists tell us we have a critical window – less than a decade – to act to prevent climate events that may be beyond civilisation’s capacity to adapt.

The urgent response needed is not being matched by action.

The students work will be taken into the city to join in the 2022 Festival of the art in February and March.

Steak Salad with Salsa Verde Vinaigrette Ingredients:

s Cooking spray s 1 (8-oz.) sirloin steak s 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided s 1/4 teaspoon black pepper s 1/4 cup olive oil s 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley s 1 1/2 tablespoons white wine vinegar s 1 tablespoon capers, finely chopped s 1 teaspoon minced garlic s 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper s 5 cups arugula (about 5 oz.) s 1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion s 1 ounce shaved fresh Parmesan cheese (about 1/4 cup)

1. Heat a skillet over medium-high. Coat pan with cooking spray. Sprinkle steak with 1/4 teaspoon salt and black pepper. Add steak to pan; cook 4 to 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare or until desired degree of doneness. Place steak on a cutting board; let stand 5 minutes. Cut across the grain into thin slices.

2. Place remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, oil, parsley, vinegar, capers, garlic, and crushed red pepper in a bowl, stirring with a whisk. Divide arugula evenly among 4 plates. Top evenly with steak, onion, and cheese. Drizzle evenly with oil mixture.

Cricket Australia’s Paine-ful choice backfires Whether Tim Paine should have lost the captaincy of the Australian cricket team is burying the main issue.

Should he have received the opportunity in the first place is the bigger talking point.

I don’t think he should have.

Paine stepped down from his role on the eve of the Ashes series after a historic Cricket Australia investigation into text messages sent to a colleague surfaced.

Paine made the decision to resign

– just weeks out from the start of the series against England – after it became clear to him that details of the incident in 2017 were about to be made public.

He said the CA investigation had exonerated him but that he “deeply” regretted his actions at the time and still to this day.

CA accepted Paine’s decision to stand down, effective immediately, and the national selection panel will now have to begin the process of identifying and appointing a new

captain to lead the side before the first Test in Brisbane on December 8.

Paine had been in the role – termed by some as Australia’s second highest-profile job after the nation’s prime minister – since March 2018.

He took the job from Steve Smith in the wake of the ball tampering affair and was seen as a steady pair of hands to guide Australian cricket.

If the details of the investigation

had been made public at the start of his tenure, it’s likely Paine’s captaincy would have ended before it even started.

I don’t have a problem with a raunchy text message to a significant other as long as it’s consensual and it seems Paine’s wife has forgiven him for his indiscretion which is good enough for me.

However, such behavior should have ruled him out of ever being an option for test captain in the first place.

The rest of the world has a low opinion of the culture of Australian cricket over the years and Paine, long held up as the positive change sweeping over the team, has blotted his copy book and so has Cricket Australia by picking him.

It’s an ethical debate and it appears Paine is still keen to be considered for selection but in my view, he was a tidy gloveman and mediocre batsman who will now struggle to hold his place in the team.

After a few wet Saturdays which saw back to back weeks of sport cancelled the Wainui Goats year 8 cricket team finally started their season at Bryan Heath Park against Hutt Districts Knight Riders. Batting first Wainui battled

away and despite losing a flurry of wickets at the end of the innings finished up with a score of 75. Leading the way was Logan Pasene with 24 and Brooke Neary 17 not out. Going out to defend it was always going to be a tough ask for the Wainui kids and Hutt managed to hit their way through to 127

A part of the 2022 Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts, the Tungia Tahia Festival is the newest iteration of the 2020 Te Ata Festival.

Young people (rangatahi) aged 12-24, from around the Wellington region are invited to register for Te Ahu Taiohi. This free, Porirua based, development programme allows rangatahi to work with top choreographers and theatre experts through a kaupapa Maori framework of expression and exploration.

Te Ahu Taiohi will facilitate the creativity of young people (rangatahi) by giving them the tools to express what is important to them through art and movement with their hard work culminating into two cutting edge performances 21 - 22 February at Te Rauparaha Arena as a part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Festival of the Arts.

Over five weeks, rangatahi will engage in practical work with incredible choreographers: Jared Hemopo, Wahia Te Pouri Felise, Myah Miranda, Sharn

Te Pou and Ihaia Ropata to experience hip hop, contemporary dance, fusion, Maori and Pasifika dance, krump, ballet, and Kapa Haka, along with upcoming theatre talents: John Ulu Va’a and Dylan Vailima Fa’atui.

Rangatahi will receive creative support from Aotearoa’s leading Maori theatre and production companies: Taki Rua: Aotearoa’s fo r e m o st M a o r i T h e a t r e Company and Te Rakau Hua O Te Wao Tapu Trust . Together they produce, commission and develop theatre with a distinctively Maori voice and encourage Maori theatre as a vehicle for change.

Rehearsal Director Mapihi Kelland says “I am excited and grateful for this awesome opportunity to work with the Rangatahi in Porirua. Our role is to hold space and nurture the flax roots so our bellbirds (rangatahi) can sing, dance and shine.”

The programme will begin in the first week of the school holidays (16 Jan - 30 Jan, 2022) moving to after school and weekends when the school term resumes.
