“Well, that was the big one that got away,” thought Johnsonville pharmacist Geoff Savell. It was about midnight, one night in August 2012, and he and seven mates were on a boat 50 miles off the coast of Westport. The tuna, at an educated guess all 300kg of it, had put up a good fight, and he sat down to catch his breath. “Then I realised I was in a bit of trouble,” says Geoff. He knew instantly it was a heart attack. About fifteen years before he’d had one and had a stent put in, but it had just “run out of gas”. Continued on page 2. Lifeflight support urged Continued from page 1. Back to shore at full speed. (Well almost. One of the team had been landing another 300kg fish and it was one of the quickest catches any of them had ever seen. “He was under some pressure…” says Geoff.) He was stabilised at Greymouth hospital for three to four days, then a decision was made he needed to be medivaced to Wellington. Not in the helicopter though, but in the plane with the full cardiac team, because his condition was very serious. Enter the Lifeflight team with a huge equipment-laden trolley. Fast. With a television crew in front, running backwards, filming a promotional series. Then: “Do you mind if we film you? You don’t have to…” “I thought if Lifeflight had the decency to save me, it was the least I could do.”

With the cardiac team, the TV crew and, importantly, Geoff’s wife Linda that plane was crammed. Geoff enjoyed the flight, with close-ups of the goats on the hills in Marlborough. ”Very, very close.” As in flight entertainment, it was fantastic. “It didn’t even cross my mind they were flying that low to keep the oxygen levels up.” He was filmed being stretchered into Wellington Hospital, and walking out the next day. The promotional film has come up on TV a number of times and Geoff always knows, because customers going into the Johnsonville Medical Centre Pharmacy always mention it. And, as a member of the Johnsonville Rotary Club, he’s always particularly happy to support their Lifeflight fundraising ventures.

Sebastian Grodd of Life Flight Trust gratefully accepted a donation cheque from Johnsonville Rotary president Pravind Singh and Rotary assistant governor for district 9940 with Adrienne Murra, looking on. PHOTO supplied.

Donation to Lifeflight Johnsonville Rotary Club spokesperson Michael Hodgen says that on October 14, the club donated $8353.18 to the Life Flight Trust to pay for a new life raft for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Rotary member Geoff Savell, who has experienced their ser-

vice first hand, says the previous raft only had a four-person capacity, not enough for rescues, or for staff in the event of an emergency. The new one is much bigger he says, and meets the rigorous Health and Safety standards required.

On the first day of Term 4 the St Benedict’s School community joined for the official opening and blessing of their newly turfed top field. There were speeches from Erica Willoughby from Help our Kids, Board representative Anna McDougall, and

Jenny Gordon, Vicar for Education, Archdiocese of Wellington They were followed by a blessing from Fr. Pete Roe. Many fundraisers have taken place at the school to support the project, including sausage sizzles, movie nights, Fathers’

Day breakfasts, mufti days, school fairs and quizzes. Principal Michael Hinds commented: “This has been a long time in the making and our school community deserves this. “It’s been a true wholeschool community effort.”

By the time lunchtime had passed on the first day, he said the number of games played, cartwheels performed, as well as tries and goals scored on the new turf were real examples of the students embracing and enjoying their new all-weather playing area.

Fifty year landmark for Newlands College

Soft plastic collection Countdown Crofton Downs is one of six Wellington shops where local residents have, from Monday, been able to drop off their soft plastic packaging. The other five collection points are Countdown in Kilbirnie, Newtown and Petone; and The Warehouse in Lyall Bay and Queensgate. The soft plastics will go to Second Life Plastics in Levin which manufactures cable covers, garden edging and other products.

It’s very fitting that Newlands College Deputy Principal Deb Mills is chairing a small team of five organising the school’s fiftieth jubilee in May next year. Deb wasn’t there on day one, but as the longest-serving staff member at Newlands (she started in 1988) she does link past and future in a way that few others can. The team is calling all former staff, students and friends of the school to assemble to mark the occasion on Friday May 1 and Saturday May 2 2020. Social media makes that easier than it would have been when she started. “People can just go to the website, fill in a form, enter their details and submit. Inquiries can be made at jubilee@newlands.school.nz,” she says. This jubilee is going to be about people Deb adds. “We want people to come and celebrate, to reconnect, in person, with the people they have known.” Already there has been interest from the US, from London and places as far apart in New

Zealand as Invercargill and Auckland. First there will be a “Mix and Mingle” function on Friday evening at the school, then

decade photos and tours of the school on Saturday. The gala dinner will be held at Te Papa on Saturday night. That leaves Sunday for people

to meet others for a brunch and a drink if they want to Deb says, very much in line with the informal approach they are taking.

Mayor’s deputy remains an unknown By Glenise Dreaver

Wellington’s new Mayor Andy Foster would like to announce his choice of Deputy Mayor by Wednesday October 30, the date of the council inauguration ceremony. That will be held at the Michael Fowler Centre at 5.30pm as all fourteen councillors and the Mayor are sworn in. Former Mayor Justin Lester was a Labour-endorsed candi-

date who lost by 62 votes. (He has until Friday to decide on whether to ask for a recount.) While only three overtly Labour-endorsed candidates were elected to the 14-person council, some Independents and Greens are known to be left wing. That means, despite the change of Mayor, over half the council remains to the left. They outnumber those who are, like Andy, right-of-centre. However, Andy isn’t nam-

ing the left wingers who approached him with an ultimatum last week, telling him he must choose a left winger to be deputy mayor (though which one remains unclear). If he did not do that, he was told, his choice would be voted down in council. They were assuming he was favouring Nicola Young “independent, liberal, centre-right” as she has described herself, or Diane Calvert, the highest-scor-

ing candidate, who also tends to centre-right, though she ran on the ticket “Your Advocate”. Andy says he would like to have all roles announced by the October 30 ceremony. “To do the whole lot in one go, that would be perfect.” “I’m working through all the positions with my colleagues,” he adds, “talking about what they are particularly passionate about, where they would like to focus their energies.”

Stride Property, the owners of the Johnsonville Mall, have advised that the next construction phase of Queensgate Shopping Centre’s new event cinemas has begun. On Saturday October 19, 30 concrete trucks, five trips every 10 minutes, serviced the first concrete pour.. There will be 12,000 cubic metres of concrete poured during the entire project, the equivalent of five Olympic-sized swimming pools. Stride spokesperson Roy Stansfield recently confirmed, however, there is as yet no news on developments at Johnsonville.

Jojo Rabbit fundraiser The New Zealand Malaysian Society is to hold a movie fundraiser with strong local connections at 5pm on Sunday October 27 at the Lighthouse Cinema at 52 Beach St, Petone, with free tidbits and drinks from 4.30pm. Jojo Rabbit – the controversial comedy, drama and war film, was written and directed by former Onslow College student Taika Waititi and has as one of its stars former Marsden College schoolgirl Thomasin McKenzie. Tickets sales, at $20 per person, will be available up to Friday October 25. Payment is to be direct debited to the NZ Malaysian Society Incorporated, Westpac Account number 03 0518 0136738 000, or contact organisers at nzmalaysiansociety@gmail.com

Three young students from Fiona Haines Dance Academy in Karori have been chosen for the Royal NZ Ballet’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’ at the Wellington Opera House between November 6-9. They won their parts from a group of over 90 Wellington hopefuls who auditioned for the roles of the seven birds in the production. Teacher Fiona Haines says the three are agreed they have been totally inspired by being part of this prestigious production – and by being tutored by the company’s ballet master. And, she says, all three agree they are strongly hoping to join the company when they grow up. Local amputees can now receive support through the recently launched Peer Support Service which connects them with volunteers who have adapted to their own amputations. The service, run by the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service and the Amputees Federation of New Zealand, aims to help amputees get through that significant time in their life. Peer Support coordinator Claire Rumble from Wilton says one of the most important elements in her role is the matching of amputees and

Preparing for the Frost/Nixon interviews, Stagecraft actors from left are Woodridge resident Clayton Foster as David Frost, Jonathon Ensor (John Birt), Chris O’Grady (Jack Brennan), Martin Hunt (Swifty Lazar), Emanuel E. Garcia (Richard Nixon) PHOTO supplied.

Watergate scandal revisited Woodridge actor Clayton Foster is intrigued by the way his latest role, of David Frost interviewing former US president Richard Nixon, has such striking parallels with the current US political situation. In what is billed as probably the most timely play of 2019, Stagecraft’s production of Frost/Nixon, by Peter Morgan, opens on October 30 at the Gryphon Theatre. It is the gripping, thriller-style true story of the most-watched political interview in history. Nixon resigns amid the fallout of the Watergate scandal in 1974. By 1977, he is living in splendid seclusion in California and has

never publicly admitted any guilt or remorse for letting his country down. Then along comes British talk show host, David Frost, determined to extract a confession from the disgraced statesman over the course of four televised interviews. Frost and Nixon go head to head in what will become TV’s greatest battle of wills. Clayton says: “Like the current President, Nixon felt the media were the enemy. “He agreed to the interviews because he thought Frost was a lightweight and indeed in the early interviews the previously supremely confident Frost appears to have bitten

off more than he can chew. “Finding the right mix of confidence and vulnerability to play Frost has been a fun and challenging balance to get right.” He expects the play will have particular appeal for Wellington audiences. “We’re in the thick of politics here and I expect the audiences will be just as drawn into the tension and the debate as the cast has been.” Frost/Nixon begins on October 30 and runs till November 9. Tickets are available on i-ticket and range from $20 - $25. Group discounts are available. For more details see www.stagecraft.co.nz

Who can remember the $11 billion financial hole Steven Joyce claimed was in our budget before the last election. That was a very big lie. The reality is we now have a $7.5 billion surplus, and this after having to rebuild hospitals and schools after years of neglect, launching a major families package which will make 384,000 families with children an average of $75 better off each week by 2020, the winter energy payment, wage increases, and building 2700 new social houses, just to name a few of the things our Jacinda Ardern-led government have done. And all while the Prime Minister has raised NZ’s profile on the world stage exponentially, thus assisting our trade. The fact our primary exports were up over $9 billion last year is a testament to the success of turning that profile into trade. There is a concerted effort among the opposition and the media to talk the economy down, but the statistics just don’t bear it out. I’m confident you, the good folk of Ōhāriu, can see through the relentless negativity. No one gets it right all the time, but as Alan Martin used to say, it’s the putting right that counts.

Watch as the numerous housing projects locally start to come on stream. I met with my old colleagues at the police last week where the talk was of the growth of gangs in the country. That’s another problem we have inherited and we have to get smart about rectifying. It’s easy to say “throw them in prison”, and while prison is definitely one part of disrupting their activities, the real answer lies in taking their wealth and assets. All the tough talk of recent years never reduced the flow of methamphetamine or rise of gang numbers, so we really do have to look for smarter more coordinated ways of reducing their wealth and power, in and out of prison. And I am pleased to say we are. Locally, if you are aware of gang activity or drug dealing in your area, let the local police know. That way we’re attacking the problem at the top and bottom. Finally, go the ABs! Even if you’re not usually a rugby fan, and I’m amazed at how many of our recent arrivals to New Zealand are, it’s great to have something we can all get behind and forget Unit 2, 18 Moorefield Road, Johnsonville our On differences. is a great the McDonald’sUnity roundabout thing. The Friendship Club of Johnsonville celebrated Cyber Smart Week (October 14-18) by inviting David Morrison of InternetNZ to give an illustrated talk to its monthly meeting. Club president Ross Fletcher says that David described the work of his organisation and then the ways in which computers can be attacked and people’s personal information harvested. “While we had all heard scary stories about what malware (malicious software) can do to a computer and of people losing money to email scams, David gave very good advice on how to stay safe on the internet,” says Ross. “Key messages were the importance of updating your computer, backing up files to an external hard drive or to the ‘cloud’ and installing effective antivirus

For just $15 a table, individuals can buy a space to sell everything from furniture to clothes, both new and second-hand items. Church members also have tables selling

home-baking, marmalade, plants, books, cushions, and trinkets, with all proceeds going to support the church’s activities. Teacher aides’ vital work underfunded

9

Brett’s Brief National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu

By Lauren Simpson

Underfunding teacher aides is a big barrier to schools getting the support they need, says Khandallah School’s assistant principal and teacher Leanne Whitfield. Teacher aides play a vital role in schools, but the lack of funding sees classrooms without enough of their support, she says. Their unreliable income, including unpaid school holidays and short hours makes it a very a difficult career to support a family on, she adds. “No one would ever do it for the money.” Teacher aides are, however, often passionate about the job or appreciate the flexibility, she says. And those who do the job are indispensable. “It might be that you have a child with special needs who is generating funding that is the catalyst for that teacher aide being there, but that teacher aide then is a resource for the whole class.” This teacher support also allows children who have identified needs, but have not met the threshold for funding, to be supported, says Leanne. There is an expectation for education equity and that every child will have their learning shaped around their needs, but, she says, it’s just not possible for a teacher to do that by themselves. Crofton Downs Primary School

This Government has overseen a rapid increase in the number of people joining gangs, but it’s no closer to achieving its promise of 1800 extra police on the beat.

Stuart Nash is failing the New Zealanders who want safer communities, but also the Police who have been planning for these additional resources.

In fact, it’s given up entirely.

So this week, the Government shifted the goal posts.

The Prime Minister promised her Government would deliver 1800 additional police officers to the force. That is additional recruitment, accounting for police officers who leave each year. That promise has been repeated numerous times by Police Minister Stuart Nash.

Khandallah School’s assistant principal, and teacher, Leanne Whitfield: Schools underfunded to support the vital role that teacher aides play. PHOTO: Lauren Simpson.

teacher aide Jessa Turnbull is employed to support one child but, she says, her classroom presence helps other children with needs in the class. Occasionally stepping away from the supported child gives them the independence they need and provides the time to assist other children, she says. The necessity for more support

in classrooms comes down to the diversity in needs and behaviours within those classrooms, says Jessa. “Children are all at different levels of learning and they all have different ways they learn best,” says Jess. “Having more people in the classroom to help create a fluid system is something that we need.”

Now Stuart Nash is simply counting every person who has been through the Police College and ignoring the many hundreds of experienced police officers who have resigned over the past two years. This is a broken promise to New Zealanders.

With gang membership on the rise and serious crime increasing, having these extra cops in our community is incredibly important.

It doesn’t matter what the Government says, what new excuse it comes up with, what was said to Winston Peters behind closed doors.

Now more than ever it should be focused on ensuring there are enough police officers to stop criminals offending.

The Prime Minister promised the New Zealand public 1800 additional police officers and she will fail to deliver on that promise.

But after two years, the Government has only managed to add 832. There’s no way it can add a further 1000 cops in less than a year.

This is more than just another humiliating defeat for the Government. This is a broken promise to keep New Zealanders safe.

Wadestown’s iconic walk at twenty year mark It started as a fundraiser for the kindergarten, opening up a few gardens around Wadestown. Two decades on, with interiors and an ARTHouse now in the mix, the Wadestown House and Garden Walk is preparing to kick off for the eighth time on Sunday November 10. The walk is the major fundraising event for Wadestown School. Once every three years, more than 1000 people want to take a peek into some of Wellington’s most stunning properties. Alison Beaumont is one of the original organisers. “I think what’s seen the Walk continue is the amazing sense of community that the day inspires,” she says. “Wadestown is a buzz with people all sharing the same experience, taking their time to see some hidden gems and exploring streets they don’t usually get to. It’s run only every three years, so no Walk is ever the same, she says. “Gardens change so much in that time and new homes are added.” Gardens range from grand landscapes to courtyard gardens. She says the first Walk was a bit of a surprise hit, and she certainly hadn’t expected that it would become such an entrenched part of the Wadestown calendar. Local parent Andrea Davidson, on the organising committee, says they have 15 properties open this

A JEWISH STATE WAS NEEDED

On the 14th May 1948 the first Prime Minister of the modern State of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, proclaimed these words in Israel’s Declaration of Independence: “The catastrophe which recently befell the Jewish people—the massacre of millions of Jews in Europe— was another clear demonstration of the urgency of solving the problem of its homelessness by re-establishing in Eretz-Israel the Jewish State… THE STATE OF ISRAEL will be open for Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering of the Exiles; it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions…” The State of Israel has been faithful to the words expressed by Ben-Gurion. It has taken in millions of Jews from around the globe—hundreds of thousands who were refugees from war-ravaged Europe were among the first to arrive in 1948. Within months of the birth of the State, the Displaced Persons camps in Europe that housed devastated Jews were closed down as their occupants had gone home to Israel. Many more who were forced out of Arab States in the Middle East and North Africa in the first few years of independence arrived back home too. Israel has dealt with Jewish “homelessness” and continues to do so because Israel is the indigenous Jewish homeland. All sectors of Israeli society—Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, Druze etc. share equally in the benefits of the nation in education and culture, politics and religion, business and employment. All have the same equal opportunities you would find in any other genuine democracy. Of course there are problems being worked out within that democracy but there is not one democratic state in the world which is not still ‘a work in progress’—New Zealand included. In his speech as Israeli Foreign Minister to the United Nations commemorating the Holocaust in 2005 Silvan Shalom said: “Since its establishment Israel has provided a haven for Jews facing persecution anywhere in the world. At the same time, it has built a society based on the values of democracy and freedom for all its citizens, where Jewish life and culture and literature and religion and learning— all those things which the Nazis sought to destroy—can flourish and thrive.” Recent history proves that there needed to be a Jewish State and it must remain a Jewish State. Nazi Germany is long gone but anti-Semites are still found in every nook and cranny and they are increasing rapidly. Sometimes it is blatant and directed against the Jewish people simply because they are Jews. At other times it is veiled and directed against the State of the Jewish people in the form of anti-Israel policies at the UN. Anti-Zionist sentiment is another manifestation of anti-Semitism. Zionism is simply the ideal of the Jew to live on his natural, historical and ancestral homeland. Anti-Semitism is unjustified persecution against the Jewish People. Its political companion is espoused as anti-Zionist sentiments and anti-Israel conduct in international affairs. The Basic (Nation State) Law passed by Israel’s lawmakers in 2018 which was decried by its opponents as apartheid and racist, is simply a clarification of what Ben-Gurion declared at Israel’s independence. It is not anti-Arab or anti any race or religion. It simply enshrines the need to preserve the State of Israel as a Jewish State that will always remain just that, while at the same time giving respect and room to non-Jews who live within that state.

A JEWISH STATE MUST REMAIN

The nations who gathered at Evian in France in July 1938 just prior to the Second World War offered the Jews of Europe little hope of sanctuary or salvation. After gathering there to discuss the Jewish refugee crisis which was growing because of Hitler’s policies, many of the 32 representatives seemed to be more absorbed by the

luxuries and pleasures the holiday resort afforded than the refugee problem they had gathered to discuss. To the shame of the international community they offered little to the Jews of Europe at a time when the fires of extermination were being kindled. Had there existed by this time the Jewish State that the League of Nations had promised years earlier then millions of European Jews could have been saved. Both Canada and Australia have recently made official apologies to the Jewish people for their callousness toward desperate European Jewish refugees. New Zealand had an affirmative part in the League of Nations decision in 1922 to grant Palestine to the Jewish people as their national homeland. Our nation also was part of the Evian discussion in 1938 and although Jewish refugees were taken in by New Zealand our quota was far too small. Everything changed with the reestablishment of Jewish statehood. When the Jews of North Africa and the Middle East were being persecuted after the War it was the reinstated State of Israel which came to their rescue. More Jewish refugees were taken in by Israel in its formative years of existence because of Arab persecution than the displacement of Palestinian refugees as a result of Israel’s War of Independence which was forced upon Israel by the Arab nations.

In 1967 as strong Arab armies began to mobilise and converge upon Israel’s vulnerable borders with the express aim of destroying the 19 year old Jewish State, the United Nations abandoned their responsibility to step in and chastise the Arab nations for their threat to a sovereign democracy. Even France who at the time was Israel’s closest ally abandoned her at her time of need. In desperation the Israelis were forced to act with a pre-emptive strike against the Arab air forces which were threatening them. Within six days, adding to the Arab shame for their aggression against Israel, was the Arab humiliation of a resounding defeat. The rest is history. When an airliner of innocent Jews was taken hostage and ended up at Entebbe airport in Uganda in 1976 it was the State of Israel who came to their rescue. The Jews of Ethiopia were rescued from great peril in dramatic airlifts in operations that took place in 1984 and 1991. These airlifts would rival any of the Bible stories that have made the people of Israel famous from antiquity. With the demise of the Soviet Union in 1989 it was the State of Israel that offered many of the Jews of that crumbling empire a real refuge and hope. Over a million came from the former Soviet Union in just 10 years. Without the State of Israel these Jews would have been at the mercy of non-democratic regimes which were cruel, ruthless and anti-Semitic. There needs to remain an independent Jewish State that can function with or without the cooperation of other nations. The horror of all horrors—the Holocaust—just 75 years ago, as well as blatant and increasing anti-Semitism everywhere, demands the continuation of Jewish statehood. The Jewish people are justified in having their own sovereign state. They have learned from centuries of experience at the hands of merciless persecutors. Now amid threats from Iran and others who have stated that their aim is to completely destroy them; when it comes to the security of their very existence “we will defend ourselves by ourselves”. This is the lesson they have learned after millennia of Jew-hatred.

NEW ZEALAND MUST BACK THE JEWISH STATE

The anti-Semitic movement which is trying to disguise itself as a humanitarian cause for the Palestinian Arabs–BDS (for Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions against the State of Israel)—is primarily a political weapon in the hands of Israel’s enemies to try and discredit and delegitimize the Jewish people in their quest to maintain their self-determination. The chant of the BDS activists which correlates with their maps of Palestine (showing no room for a Jewish state) is “From the River to the Sea Palestine will be free!” This really is the intent and purpose behind BDS—not just to delegitimise Israel but to damn the State altogether. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau summed it up when he said of BDS in January: “We need to understand that anti-Semitism has also manifested itself not just as in targeting of individuals, but it is also targeting a new condemnation or anti-Semitism against the very State of Israel…which can be characterised by the three d’s—demonization of Israel, a double standard around Israel and a de-legitimization of the State of Israel… I will continue to condemn the BDS movement”. There is indeed a double-standard in the UN when it comes to Israel. We saw that at the end of 2016 in UN Security Council Resolution 2334 when Israeli settlements were condemned outright, without respect to secure borders or to the historical connection the Jews have to the land. The ratio of condemnations dished out by the UN against Israel as compared to the rest of the world is usually at least four condemnations to Israel for every one condemnation to all the other nations combined. That’s a DOUBLE STANDARD. When despotic and un-democratic nations are by-passed and the one true democracy in the Middle East is ostracised unjustly then it’s time for NZ to stand aside from the crowd and vote against these anti-Israel resolutions. National Party leaders who were in government at the time UNSC Res. 2334 was passed have since admitted that the resolution was “wrong”. In a more recent case on 6 December 2018 under the Labour-led Government, New Zealand voted in favour of a UN resolution condemning the terrorism of Hamas but immediately prior to this abstained on another resolution to require a two-thirds majority for the Hamas condemnation to be passed. New Zealand honourably condemned Hamas terrorism in one vote but first dishonourably killed that vote by sitting on the fence. Why require a two-thirds majority to condemn terrorism? Again it seems truth was sacrificed for appeasement to Arab pressure. The elusive Middle East peace deal, if ever realised, will never produce a lasting peace as long as historical truth is its sacrificial lamb—a sacrifice the UN seems eager to make but a deal Israel should never accept. The Israelis have shown their willingness to placate the Palestinians on this but the Palestinians have not returned the favour. Let’s be clear: the Israelis hold land they have a right to hold. The Palestinians want that land. The best chance for a peaceful outcome is NEGOTIATION and respect between the two parties. The best way to botch this is by continued unfair and one-sided UN resolutions against Israel which New Zealand often supports. Despite his domestic challenges in Canada recently, the New Zealand Government could still learn from Justin Trudeau.

OUT&about

We Are ONE – with Hindi By Brian Sheppard

The Newlands Community Centre hosted a ‘We Are ONE evening’ on October 19, to understand something of Hindi cultures. It was led by Dr Pushpa Bhardway Wood from the Wellington Interfaith Council and supported by Vijeshni Rattan of the NZ Muslim Council. Pushpa has a PhD from Victoria University in Indian religious studies. Hinduism is both a religion and way of life for over a billion people today. Its roots extend back as far as 1500 B.C. Pushpa explained that the ancient roots and diversity of Hindi peoples, with their own traditions and deities, means that it is expressed in different ways, but with shared concepts, rituals and life goals. These relate to such matters as ethics, work, desires, the cycle of death and rebirth and the consequences of actions (karma). Hinduism has no single holy book. It has instead many scriptures that led to today’s four holy books known as vedas. In a single evening’s discussion, Pushpa and Vijeshni could only scratch the surface of what it means to be Hindu, but they certainly whetted the community’s appetite.

A group photo was taken at the Hindi We Are ONE meeting on Saturday evening at Newlands Community Centre. Mai Mostafa, Churton Park Community Centre convenor who organised the We Are ONE function on Saturday night welcomed guests with her traditional warmth and panache.

In Fitzpatrick Street, a black Volkswagen Golf hatchback parked during the evening was entered through a window left open accidentally. A jacket was stolen. In Khandallah a house in Indus Street was broken into during the afternoon while the resident was out. They had left the house doors and windows secure, but on return found that side and rear doors had been left open and blinds on a stairway window had been pulled down. The lock had been broken on

the living room window and was possibly the point of entry. Although other rooms had been given a messy search, the main target appears to have been the master bedroom. Two safes were broken into and a large quantity of jewellery, some foreign currency and expired NZ passports and family medals were stolen. A green Nissan Cefiro stationwagon parked overnight in Cockayne Road was stolen. In Ngaio a cream Ford Territory stationwagon parked overnight in Perth Street had both front and rear registration plates stolen. In Crofton Downs a house in Chequers Way was broken into via a forced rear bedroom window. A rummage search was made in a bedroom and a laptop computer and some jewellery items were stolen. In Karori the playcentre in Campbell Street was subject to a graffiti attack with black paint on the east side of the main building. In Wadestown a green Honda Civic hatchback parked overnight in Sar Street was broken into via a smashed left rear quarterlight

window. Door locks were also damaged. Linen and personal items were taken from the front seat and a sub woofer, amp, a sound mixer and tools were taken from the boot. In Oban Street, a white Ford Focus hatchback was broken into via a smashed front passenger window and a radar detector was stolen. In Northland a silver Toyota Caldina stationwagon parked overnight in Governor Road was broken into by forcing the front passenger door lock. Sunglasses and charging cables were stolen. Also in Governor Road an attempt was made to gain entry into an orange Suzuki SX4 hatchback by forcing the driver’s door lock. The attempt was abandoned and no entry gained. In Wilton a property in Pembroke Road was entered and five very large pots were stolen. Flowers were removed from the pots and left on the ground. The pots would have required more than one person to lift them and a truck or trailer would have been needed to take them away.

Fraudulent measles information discovered The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) has become aware that an unknown individual or entity may be spreading false information regarding vaccination status and hospitalisations for measles cases in New Zealand. The information claims to be from an ESR source, but this is not correct. The false information contains a graph that compares hospitalisation rates of vacci-

nated and unvaccinated cases, and has been fraudulently attributed to ESR. ESR is deeply concerned about the potential for incorrect information to deter parents from vaccinating their children. ESR’s legal and cybersecurity experts have started an investigation. We have advised the Ministry of Health and public health units of the situation.

ESR wins award

All of New Zealand’s measles surveillance data is provided by ESR to the Ministry of Health. ESR’s internationally renowned experts collect, collate and analyse data and intelligence on a wide range of diseases present in New Zealand. For the most up-to-date and correct data on measles visit www.esr.cri.nz (external link) or Public Health Surveillance (external link) site.

An Institute of Environmental Science and Research-led research project investigating influenza and influenza vaccines has won a top national science award for contributing new insights into the burden of influenza, vaccine effectiveness and influenza immunology. The New Zealand Association of Scientists (NZAS) Shorland Medal was presented to a team of researchers at a ceremony in Auckland on Tuesday. The award recognises the work of the SHIVERS (South-

ern Hemisphere Influenza and Vaccine Effectiveness Research and Surveillance) team in recognition of major and continued contribution to the largest and most comprehensive influenza research initiative ever conducted in the Southern Hemisphere. Led by ESR’s Principal Investigator Dr Sue Huang, the SHIVERS project aims to evaluate influenza disease burden, epidemiology, virology, risk factors and immunology, along with measurement of the effectiveness of vaccination prevention strategies.

We all need to take medicines at some time during our lives - for some it is everyday, others only sometimes for a cold or headache. Self Care pharmacists can provide you with the fact card Safe Use of Medicines, and help you with any questions you have about any medicines you are taking. Whether you buy medicines or get them on prescription, Self Care pharmacists advise that they have some good suggestions for taking medicines properly, and for getting the best results from their use. Know what your medicines are for. Even if your doctor has explained, when you collect your medicines discuss with your pharmacist what each medicine is for. Your pharmacist can give you information on the expected effects of each medicine and how to take or use them correctly, and whether they will interact with other medicines you have been prescribed or medicines that you have purchased. Before taking any medicine, read the label carefully to confirm you are taking the correct medicine, the correct dose, at the correct time. This is especially important if you take many medicines at different times of the day. Labels have other important information such as when to take the medicines in relation to

food (with food or on an empty stomach), whether the medicine must be swallowed whole, whether it has to be used-up by a certain date. Pharmacists can also advise you if you miss a dose and when to take the next one. Sometimes medication may be large and difficult to swallow. Not all tablets and capsules can be halved or crushed and your pharmacist can help you with this. Talk to your pharmacist if you develop any unusual symptoms after you start taking a medicine. It is best to get this checked out as it may be an allergic reaction or an unwanted side effect of the medicine. Always measure liquid medicines accurately, using proper measures, to make sure you get the correct dose. A range of reusable measuring devices are available from pharmacies and your pharmacist can advise you on the one most suitable for you and your family. Drink a large glass of water as you swallow tablets or capsules. This will stop the medicine becoming stuck in your throat and help it get down to your stomach quickly to start working as soon as possible. It helps to lean forward as you swallow. Only take medicines that have been prescribed for you, and those recommended for you by your pharmacist. Do not use other people’s medicines because

they may not be suitable for your health condition. Other people's medicines may interact with other medicines you are taking. Store medicines correctly and dispose of them safely. Safe means out of reach of children - preferably in a locked cupboard. This is really vital when children come to your home only occasionally. Store medicines in a dry place, away from direct light or heat, so they don't degrade. However, some medicines need to be kept in the fridge. Don't keep medicines that are no longer needed. Despite the wastage, there are safety concerns in keeping old medicines "just in case". Don't throw them out in general rubbish, instead, talk to your pharmacist about safe disposal. Medicines returned to your pharmacist cannot be reused, and charges cannot be refunded. Discuss with your pharmacist if your medicines look different from what you are expecting. It is best to be reassured that everything is as it should be. If you are having trouble managing your medicines, your pharmacist may be able to help with their packaging especially for your own individual medication needs. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about your medicine, to get the best outcome for your health.

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

ABs near perfect as three-peat gathers momentum The men in black will face a sterner challenge against England on Saturday night than they did Ireland in the quarter-final. However if they keep playing the way they are, no one will beat them in Japan. The 46-14 thumping of the men from the Emerald Isle should have been expected on some level even by the most cautiously optimistic All Blacks fan.

Ireland had been poor all tournament. They looked lethargic and bereft of ideas on attack and unable to execute their accurate kicking game which gave them a glimpse of a massive upset. England were also impressive of disposing of Australia in quarter-final one where the Wallabies and their whinging coach finally ran out of excuses

and simply had to take their tournament exit on the chin. The All Blacks are making me eat humble pie at this point and I’ll happily have it spoon-fed to me. With several experienced players underperforming pre-tournament, I gave them little chance of defending their title. Of course they may not but heading into the semi-final they

are the favourites and deserve that tag. Only the Springboks can come close to our ability to turn defence into attack. It’s the failing of Northern Hemisphere rugby. They want to craft tries from field position and prolonged pressure. The All Blacks can score tries from deep in their own half.

The South Africans looked dominant against a clearly tired Japanese team whose lack of depth was ruthlessly exposed. The French beat themselves through poor discipline and Wales fumbled and bumbled their way into the last four. Another big weekend awaits but a New Zealand versus South Africa final, a repeat of 1995 seems on the cards.

It’s relentless when done well.” Then there is monitoring of their compliance in the Health and Safety space, as well as tracking rehabilitation of players after injury. “People able to help in renovating such areas as the entrance and the green room are also very welcome to assist us in driving our maintenance plan forward,” Blair says. “If you are up for any challenge, please get in touch with the club by contacting enquiries@jrfc.co.nz,” he adds.

“The other day I used the e-bike to do a dam inspection which would usually take two hours to complete by foot. The bike shaved an hour off that time,” Jeremy says. “It’s so quick and easy to use, and I think we’ll save a lot of time. We are going to get some
