The two groups are combining to help provide support and advocacy for wh nau who have children with complex and life limiting conditions. No public support services exist in the Wellington Region. The $5000 would provide funding for two terms-worth of hands-on therapies and support services for 20+ families.

“For it to come from the community, driven by this great team, is an amazing feeling,” Nicola says. “To see families get the therapy that James wasn’t able to get and see what it is making a difference is really heartwarming.“It’snever been harder for people to give you charities with Covid, the cost of living crisis so we are extremely grateful.

There will also be a family hour from 3pm to 4pm for anyone who wants to get involved.“Wewant this to be a long-standing relationship and something we can do each year,” Dan says.

The Swan Nest currently runs music therapy for children each week at Johnsonville’s Collective Community Hub. Swan Nest was established in 2020 in honour of Nicola’s son, James, who was five-years-old when he died of a neuromuscular condition so rare there wasn’t even a name for it at the time.

The opening of the new Morrison Kent Lawyers Court 4 at the Tawa Squash Club is being held on Sunday from 9:30am to 12pm followed by a public open day from 12pm to 5pm. There will be an official opening for invited guests including speaker Stu Davenport, a former New Zealand Open champion and former world No 3. The ribbon cutting will be done in unison by Kim Grieve, the wife of the main contractor Geordie Grieve, who is also a past president and a significant benefactor to the club and Elizabeth Sutton, whose Dad, Mervyn Kemp, was instrumental as Mayor of Tawa in providing land for the original club to be built on in the early 1960s. There is a raffle running to win the rights to the first game of squash for a lucky Tawa Squash Club member and their chosen playing partner on the new court shortly after the Karori Garden Group enjoyed a convivial morning recently, despite the dismal rain outside.Members discussed budget buys and easy ideas for low-cost no-fuss gardening. Members displayed a colourful range of favourite op-shop vases and interesting bottles from pantry items. They also looked at easy no-cost materials for garden mulch and plant nutrition: coffee grounds, fallen leaves, grass cuttings, pine needles, banana skins and tea bags. These can be used on their own or mixed to provide a varied mulch. Tea bags can be placed around plants such as camellias, or soaked in a bucket to make a useful liquid fertiliser. Similarly chopped banana skins can be dug into the soil or soaked in a bucket of water. One member showed her bokashi bucket system for garden waste. Members of the group enjoyed sharing ideas, and as always a delicious morning tea. The garden group meets at 10.00am on the third Friday of each month at the Karori Arts and Crafts Centre, 7 Beauchamp Street. New members are welcome. Please enquire at the Centre office.

2. To support the development of youth & retirees – This is focused on the concept of inclusion, to ensure every young person & retirees in our community have a sense of belonging. Isolation can be a serious problem and we want to make sure there are plenty of opportunities for people to be part of. 3. Welfare of homeless & injured animals – Inspired by the amazing work Emjay & Sam do in the community, we added this 3rd pillar to help provide support and services to those animals Community Focused? YIP! who have no one to look after them. We’ve supported many initiations such as animal rescue, rehabilitation, evacuation, and sadly sometimes… we have been there to provide a dignified farewell as well.Although we are always busy running around helping people buy, sell and renovate houses, this is our passion and our ‘why’ for working as hard as we do. Not only do we want to revolutionise the way Real Estate is done, we want to ensure that we continue to put people before profits and do the right thing.

Oh and this week we installed a community outside our Community Hub, where people can take what they need and leave what they can. Pop by and have a look next time you are in the area. If you have a location that would like a community pantry, let us know! Have a great week everyone!

New squash court set to open in Tawa cutting of the ribbon. This will be followed by two exhibition games - all games limited to just 15 minutes. This new court is the first additional squash club court that has been built in the Wellington Region for at least 40 years. During that time, several squash clubs have closed or merged, those clubs being Scottish Harriers, Wellington Collegians, Northern (Newlands), Maidstone, Carterton, and Waikanae while Lower Hutt’s Fraser Park and Mitchel Park clubs recently merged, now Hutt City Squash, and moved to a new facility with six new courts replacing the eight they collectively managed.

To acknowledge the new court, Tawa has been allocated the hosting of the National B Grade Superchamps finals in late September to determine the best club in B Grade men’s and women’s teams in the country. Conveniently, the Tawa Women’s team qualified for the nationals by winning the Wellington Regional event in July. There will likely be 140 players and officials representing 16 teams from around the country vying for national honours. The new court will help minimise court congestion during peak times, allow major squash events to be held (like the B Grade Nationals mentioned above) due to increased playing and especially viewing capacity, and allow for planned membership growth and programme expansion over the next few years. This will result in more people visiting Tawa more often which will help Tawa maintain and grow its vibrance.

learning support for neurodiverse students. The Arrowsmith Program®, introduced by the school in 2014, is designed specifically for those with neurocognitive differences such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, auditory processing difficulties. Using principles of neuroplasticity, this programme employs techniques that strengthen pathways in the brain rather than focusing on traditional coping skills, and it has been transformative for Arrowsmith students. In February this year, Marsden was the first in school in the world to implement the Arrowsmith Whole Cohort Program, which introduces Arrowsmith principles to all Primary students in Years 2-6, with the ultimate goal of improving foundational learning capacities.

Neurodiversity Week at Marsden is an opportunity to reflect on the rich diversity that surrounds us and to demonstrate kindness, tolerance and acceptance. Students are taking part in a range of activities throughout the week, including a ‘non-uniform day’ to raise funds for Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand and Autism New Zealand.

Longbush Cottage tulips are ready to dazzle again on the 1st and 2nd October. A garden for all the seasons, Longbush Cottage near Carterton is particularly splendid in Spring, thanks to the majestic tulip.Over the past six years, Luke Gardner has planted thousands of tulips throughout the garden, including an additional 6000 bulbs from 35 varieties planted this year, making the annual Longbush Cottage Tulip Festival on the first weekend of October a must do. The festival is an opportunity to stroll through the different garden rooms enjoying colour-themed displays planted in borders and an extensive collection of pots around the garden. Tulips are treated as border plants and used as part of perennial borders to extend the flowering season rather than as a standard bedding plant. There will also be pots of tulips available to buy, ranging from $40 to $150, along with a selection of cottage garden plants (cash sales only). Luke too will also be in the garden all weekend, on hand to answer questions about the tulips.

Kandahar Village Retire to the 16 Totara Street, Masterton largely a bare paddock. “When we arrived, there was virtually no garden to speak of other than a small rose garden and a few trees scattered around the property . . . a blank canvas waiting to be planted,” Luke says. “From the very beginning I was on a journey to make a garden. Watching it come together is fun and very satisfying.”

Kandahar’s two-bedroom villas are warm, comfortable and have been designed with consideration for the ageing process. Other selling points for Doreen included the internal access garage and the great location within walking distance of shops, cafes and Henley Lake. She says the village is very sociable and is looking forward to the completion of the community centre which will be a social hub for the village and host

“They (tulips) are just extraordinary. They burst out of the ground like these jewels. There are so many different colours and varieties, it is so much fun creating different combinations and amazing displays,” Luke says. Longbush Cottage garden is on a one hectare block, which until 2015 was

I thought, ‘oh yes, I think I need to move here.’”Withthe support of her family, Doreen made the move to Kandahar Village with her dog Bella at the end of last year.

Therefore when measuring blood pressure it means that several readings may need to bePeopletaken.are considered to have high blood pressure when repeated measurements show a raised reading above a certain level and stays at a higher level even when they are relaxed and sitting quietly.

The problem with high blood pressure is that often people do not experience any symptoms at all and feel quite well, until the blood pressure is very high and causing other health issues. This is why it is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. This can be done by your pharmacist, doctor or nurse. Blood pressure should be measured at least once a year if you are over 40 years of age, or more often if you already have high blood pressure.

When you think of blood pressure, think of water in a hosepipe. A certain amount of pressure is required to get water from a hosepipe so in the same way it’s important for us to have blood pressure so that blood can be circulated around our body.

The only way a person can find out if their blood pressure is high is by having it tested regularly. For 90-95% of adults with high blood pressure, the cause is not known and high blood pressure tends to gradually develop over many years. Some people are at higher risk of high blood pressure because of their age, their race and their family history, all risk factors which cannot be changed. However there are other risk factors which can be changed and these include being overweight, doing very little exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, salt intake and stress. High blood pressure can’t be cured, but it can be controlled. For all of us this means a healthy lifestyle and for some it also means taking medicines as well. There are a number of different medicines currently available and these medicines generally have to be taken every day on a regular basis and it is important not to miss taking any of them. If you are unsure about your blood pressure or any of your blood pressure medications then talk to your Self Care pharmacist and get your Self Care card on High Blood Pressure. It may be a good idea to get your blood pressure checked at the same time.

During the course of the day our blood pressure goes up and down depending on a number of things, including what we are doing, how busy or how stressed we are, our physical activity and also the amount of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco being taken.

Enrolment / Ballot Information

The Tigers have not made the top eight in a decade, the Gold Coast Titans haven’t come close to being title contenders in their 15 years of Parramattaexistence.hasn’twon a title in 36 years, the Warriors have the third longest streak at 27 years as they await a maiden title. How long will it take for the Dolphins to be competitive? Will they become competitive? This past weekend would suggest they have a tough task of making it a success on the field. With Wayne Bennett at the helm, they have a chance and if the signing of Cameron Munster proves to be true but there are some cautionary tales that must be taken into account. The NRL has the potential to be a really great product, but it clearly needs more depth. Adding another 30 contracts to their books does little to make this a Morereality.pathways for emerging players need to be created with continued investment. If not, those who have the money will continue to triumph and will eventually make the competition stale.

It’s been a rough weekend for theTheNRL.haves and the have nots have been ruthlessly exposed in a series of lop-sided games. On Friday night, the North Queensland thumped the Warriors 48-4 and Melbourne embarrassed Brisbane 60-12. Saturday saw Parramatta thrash the Canterbury Bulldogs 42-6, Cronulla humbled Manly 40-6 and the West Tigers gave up early on as the Sydney Roosters humiliated them 72-6.

By Grant Stephen It was anything but business as usual as the Men’s Premier and Central Region Football Leagues draw to a conclusion this weekend. It is so tight in the Premier League that all games are now scheduled to kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday. Both promotion and relegation outcomes hinge on this final round. The decision was therefore taken by Capital Football on Monday to align all kickoff times to ensure that no team gets a competitive advantage due to scheduling on the last day of the season. It remains a two-horse race between Stop Out (37 points) and Island Bay (36) to win the league and challenge Whanganui Athletic for a spot in the Central League next year. Both have drawn strong opposition this week and all will finally be revealed on Saturday around 4.30pm. In the Central League, the situation remains just as exciting or worrisome, depending on your point of view. Wellington Olympic will have to shrug off the disappointment of their 3-1 semi final loss to Auckland City in the Chatham Cup on Sunday and focus their attention on keeping top spot in the Central League. They’ve got a two-point buffer over Miramar Rangers with a game in hand and the catch-up match between these two sides was scheduled for Wednesday 24 August. That has now been delayed until

Samuel Marsden Collegiate School has announced their new rowing coach, Jamie Fitzgerald of Inspiring Performance. Jamie has had an extensive rowing career in New Zealand and internationally. After winning national gold medals at every school age group (including the Maadi Cup 8s), Jamie went on to row for New Zealand at Junior, U23 and Elite levels. Taking his rowing further, Jamie has captained crews against both Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and holds the world record for rowing the Atlantic Ocean (with fellow adventurer Kevin“SinceBiggar).joining the Marsden community as a parent, it has been so inspiring to see students across the school achieve incredible things and live Marsden’s values. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the rowing programme that does the same thing. Rowing offers so many lifelong benefits to both athletes and their families. I’m excited to see all of our rowers achieve their personal best, and for us to have loads of fun along the way!” Since finishing his own competitive rowing, Jamie has supported athletes and rowing crews around New Zealand, is qualified in instructional design and communication, and has completed plenty of other adventures around the world. Being the first Kiwi to walk unaided to the South

after this coming weekend but Olympic could still wrap things when they travel to Havelock North Wanderers on Sunday. All games in the league are also being played on the same day at the same time. It’s the worst possible timing for Wanderers with first place playing last place and either Wanderers or Western Suburbs looking most likely to take the wooden spoon down to the Premier League for 2023. Wanderers were on the wrong end of a 2-0 win to Petone with both goals being scored after regulation time had elapsed. Western Suburbs lost 3-1 away at the hands of Napier City Rovers and sit on 14 points, just 2 ahead of Havelock North. Wellington United had a barnstorming 5-1 win against TFS North Wellington and went into the sheds 4-0 up by half time. Norths were not a pretty watch and the win for United puts both teams on 15 points, with Norths in 7th spot, based on goal difference. Waterside Karori enjoyed a mini renaissance and picked up four points from two matches. Their Wednesday catchup game against Miramar Rangers was a 2 all draw. That gave Waterside some hope of making the top four while denting Rangers title tilt at the same time. Waterside did one better on Saturday when they got the better of the Phoenix Reserves for a 1 nil win including a fine penalty save from the Karori keeper. The Napier win however created an uncatchable five-point buffer which means that Olympic, Miramar, the Phoenix and Napier can book their tickets for the National Summer League.Nottoo many more sleeps now until the 2022 winners and losers are known.

Marsden appoints new rowing coach

Over the past decade, only three teams have won the minor premiership - Melbourne, Penrith and the Sydney Roosters. Many would argue, that trio are the best run clubs on a consistent basis and there is some truth to that but such statistics do not make it easy to draw in new and younger fans.

Public Notices

Promotion/relegation looms in final week

Having so many games turn into non-competitive laughers, is an indictment on certain clubs and also the depth of the player pool and club as a whole. These results set a terrible backdrop for the emergence of the new Dolphins franchise that will join the competition next year. Each of the 16 current clubs have 30 contracted, top-level players, yet it only seems there is enough players for 11 competitive teams. The rich teams seem to be getting richer year-on-year.
