Teenager on a mission By Glenise Dreaver

When one of Trish McBride’s friends made a mistake with an e mail to her, an interesting course of events unfolded. Trish comes from Broadmeadows, but the e mail went to another Trish McBride entirely, an education officer at the Florida Zoo. An online conversation ensued and Florida Trish told Broadmeadows Trish about a New Zealand connection through thirteen-year-old Logan Charles. Continued on page 2. Saving the Kakapo a mission for US youngster Continued from page 1. With his birthday in June, he has finally been able to become involved as a teen volunteer with the local zoo education programme – and he has a passion to help save the Kakapo. Logan first learned about our threatened ground-dwelling parrot at an art camp in 2017 and, says his mother Courtney Charles, he really took their plight to heart. “I had never even heard of the Kakapo until he came home one day trying to figure out how to help them.” Logan started his fundraising last year, raising $500 to adopt Sinbad. He has already exceeded his goal to raise $1000 to help buy a portable incubator for the eggs, extending that when he heard about the aspergillosis outbreak that had hit the birds. This week, he sent $NZ739 to Kakapo Recovery to help treat

them and his online fundraising has reached $NZ1239. He has also raised another $1470 with the help of the Brevard America Association of Zoo Keepers, and a bake sale he held at the zoo. Even Zealandia, our local ecosanctuary, does not hold any of the remaining 142 ground-dwelling birds left in the world. (They do not breed in captivity, so are kept in predator-free sanctuaries in the wild in the South Island.) The last time anyone in Wellington had the chance to see one was in July/August 2016. Sirocco, and his keeper, made a six-week visit on his way to the Department of Conservation’s Orokonui breeding sanctuary in Dunedin. Logan is delighted to hear that DOC is predicting 30–50 new chicks this year - a huge boost to the population, due to an exceptional fall of rimu

The Animal Medical Centre on Burgess Road, Johnsonville was broken into at 5am on Wednesday morning. The offenders allegedly tried to break through the metal frame of the door but the four-point lock proved to be too difficult so the glass was broken. Alarms in the medical centre went of immediately with offenders only taking a closed till box containing “very little” money and customers loyalty cards. Owners Antoinette and Dr Mike Benfell were disappointed to know the centre had been targeted but most of their concerns were for the cats staying there overnight. “They are our customers loved pets so we worried someone would have let them out,” Mike says. Thankfully the glass was replaced the same day and insurance will be covering the majority of their losses.

Ngaio writer records NZ music scene By Glenise Dreaver

Terry Collier of Ngaio has already amassed a lifetime of memories of his musical career as a percussionist in many Wel-

lington-based and New Zealand bands, not least the Rodger Fox Big Band. Perhaps half a lifetime of memories so far would be a more accurate description

of a musical passion that has seen him regularly work both nationally and internationally, including gigs in London, New York and twice at the Montreux Jazz festival.

Swampy to go He’s recorded it all in a new book Skins in the Game. Now in his early seventies, Terry also continues to play in a relatively new group AJQ. “Better than ever” he says. “As far as I’m concerned anyway.” His passion for music always ran alongside his former career as an economic policy advisor with the Ministry of Economic Development, the music paying his way through university. (Then there’s his passion for classic cars and a book Untangling the Mystery: New Zealand and the 250F Maserati. It’s sold well – but that’s another story.) Now retired, about two years ago Terry read Blue Smoke, Chris Bourke’s history of popular music in New Zealand up to the late 1950s. The New Zealand Post Book of the Year and the People’s Choice Award in 2011 it ended, he says, “just as my era of involvement in music began”. “My wish has been to start filling out the New Zealand music scene from the 1960s on. People want to know about that too. If it’s not recorded, that history will be lost forever.” That’s why it’s been important for his book to be in hard copy, rather than just being put online. “This way, it’s deposited in the Turnbull and National libraries,” he says of his self-published book. “Otherwise it’s too ephemeral.” People are invited to the launching of Skins in the Game at the next AJQ gig at 7.30pm on Friday August 2 at ‘The Clubhouse’, 12-16 Dundas Street, Seatoun, where Rodger Fox will give a brief introduction. You can order a copy through any local bookshop, Philip Garside Publishing books@ pgpl.co.nz or from venturopublications@ hotmail.com.

inbrief news Good news for GWRC A report by the Office of the Ombudsman has praised Greater Wellington Regional Council’s “strong culture of openness” in proactively releasing official information, which is further reflected in its focus on meeting information requests within statutory deadlines, which it does almost 100 per cent of the time. The just-published report, LGOIMA compliance and practice in Greater Wellington Regional Council, covered GWRC ‘s leadership and culture including its organisation, capability, policies and practices in meeting requests for official information. Chief executive Greg Campbell says that it reinforces their belief that transparency of information benefits everyone. They are, he says, “promoting a broader understanding of what we do, generating confidence in public leadership and enabling accountability for performance”.

Cards created to address ‘toxic masculinity’ By Lauren Simpson

Seven students from the Karori Baptist Church are actively addressing men’s mental and emotional wellbeing with the help of their group leader. The students from Wellington College and Wellington Girls’ College have created wallet cards with a checklist of coping strategies for difficult times. The cards will be given to every WC pupil in term three. The idea began from their group leader’s Praxis assignment about responding to a local community issue. “They chose mental and emotional wellbeing as an aspect of toxic masculinity,” says group leader Alex Powell. “Men are expected to be a certain way and it’s proven to be really devastating in our suicide rates.” “When we started, it was the idea of toxic masculinity and how slogans like ‘man up’ are affecting men’s health,” says Thomas Mitchell. The group are taking practical approach which provides coping strategies while also directing

people to organisations providing more serious support. Several group members presented the cards at a Hamilton youth camp a fortnight ago. “The point of the cards is not just to look after yourself but also others, which anybody can do. That is why we also handed them out at camp,” says Thomas.

“We went on stage and explained how we were trying to make sure help is available to people who need it,” adds Lydia Finney. “Everyone really liked it,” she says. “This guy even came up to us and asked, ‘Can I have some of your cards to put in a book I am writing?’.” They first discovered the issue

after discussing other problems their communities face and realising the girls’ school provides additional support for mental health. “We even have a wellbeing dog called Harvey,” says Millie Roy. “He is a golden retriever puppy and you can go pat him or give him cuddles at any time.”

Clear measures of Karori bus dissatisfaction Two Wellington city councillors recently ran their own online survey of 468 bus patrons focusing on the Karori service during the commuter peak period. Onslow Western Ward councillors Diane Calvert and Simon Woolfe say the survey was conducted over three weeks in May. Diane says they are hoping to speak to the results at the Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee hearing today. Simon describes the survey results as clearly showing that there are still “significant” issues being faced by bus patrons, the

main one being lack of capacity on the routes at peak periods. “These issues are slowly eroding both the social and economic fabric of our city,” he says. They identify the key findings as being that 91 per cent of respondents say their experience of the new bus service is worse than before July 2018, that 72 per cent of respondents are considering alternative options to get to town with the majority considering car and that 46 per cent say they are using the bus less than before July 2018. However, they acknowledge

that new operational leadership and resources within Greater Wellington’s public transport team is enabling a fresh look at the fundamental issues. Simon says: “We’re really seeing a strong willingness by Greater Wellington Regional Council’s new public transport manager to listen to and address concerns.” Both feel however that more should still be done strategically to understand what went wrong in the first place, to ensure it is never repeated, and what other opportunities there may be to improve the bus service even further.

Diane adds that our world has changed. “And it will continue to do so since the current service was designed several years ago. “We know even with extra drivers and the tweaking of some routes, it’s still not enough to keep pace with demand.” Both councillors are agreed that The Let’s Get Welly Moving Programme (comprising three partners – the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) WCC and GRWC, appear to have eliminated any real future improvements to the bus network within

Wellington city other than some bus priority lanes and traffic lights. They say the billion dollar investment on mass transit to the south and east is welcome, but the western and northern suburbs also need and deserve investment to improve the public transport service. Diane says: “What we need as an additional early improvement is a coordinated bus transport improvement plan, covering the whole city, to be delivered over the next 10 years while investment and delivery for mass transit is completed.”

However, he says: “We are in great shape, both as a city and as an organisation,” adding that there are both challenges and opportunities ahead. “The next three years will be pivotal to Wellington’s long-term future and to ensure we stay in great shape. “However, there are constraints and this will likely impact the forthcoming 2021-31 Long-term Plan. There will need to be some reprioritisation and re-sequencing of the council’s work with longer time-scales than those agreed in the 2018-28 Long-term Plan,” he said.

Big crowd at Karori’s first interfaith event by Jo Wilson

With sixty two people attending their first interfaith event on Sunday, organisers at the Karori Community Centre had to hurriedly find nearly 40 extra chairs for those who turned up says centre manager Kay Webster. “The centre was bursting,” she says. “Clearly people are interested in other people.” Attendees came from a wide variety of backgrounds and ethnicities. “It took courage to come along but the reward of coming was gaining genuine connection and understanding,” she says. Karori resident Manjit Singh led an explanation of Sikh traditions. “I wonder if Kiwis are too polite sometimes,” says Manjit. “I love to tell people why I wear a turban and what it is I live by.” There was music, food and fun. Singh brought generous helpers who fed the large group. It was the first in a series of events designed to give people a greater understanding of different traditions and cultures. The next event, on August 4, will provide an insight into the Muslim faith, and more details of the ongoing schedule can be gained from contacting Kay for more information: manager@karoricommunitycentre.org.nz or 476 4968

Quilts of love to those in need A group of Karori volunteers are making patchwork prayer quilts to donate to those in need of prayer in the community, nationwide and even internationally. Over 100 quilts have been gifted to the terminally ill and those suffering stress and trauma since the group was formed more than 10 years ago. Based in Karori at St Ninian’s Uniting Parish, Prayers and Squares is part of an international

outreach organisation making hand tied lap size quilts. As each knot is tied a prayer (requested by the recipient) is made. Then the quilt is blessed in a church service and the congregation invited to add their prayers and knots to the quilt. “A prayer quilt is a gift from the heart,” said Ailsa Coutts, who co-ordinates the group at St Ninian’s which includes members of St Teresa’s and St Anselm’s,

and other Karori residents, present and past. The practical quilts are often taken to hospital appointments, used by those in wheelchairs and those being transported to treatments. They are also often draped over the casket if the person dies. The makers say there is a twoway blessing. “It’s not only the recipients who are blessed with their quilt but also those who are involved in the making,” com-

ments Ailsa. You don’t have to be a sewer. The group also needs ironers, those who pray and designers who make up the patterns with the pre-cut material. Members of the community may sponsor or nominate people in need of prayer. The

intended quilt recipient chooses the prayers they wish made and indicates their preferred colours. The group is supported by financial donations and cotton material from individuals in the community and the St John’s Op Shop Trust in Karori.

LETTERS to the editor

Is the Independent Herald a stooge? Dear Editor Our local Northern Ward Wellington City Councillors seems very keen on getting their picture in front of Independent Herald readers. My question is, have they done anything in the way of assistance to justify being in the newspaper article, or is it just a photo opportunity to promote how wonderful

they are? Gosh, it must be local body election time coming up. Hopefully, we can get new candidates standing for the council who will do something real for the ratepayers and not just grandstand with smiley photo opportunities. Murray Gray Johnsonville

Dear Murray You have raised a very good point which goes right to the heart of the role of a newspaper. It’s also very timely as we move towards election time. Our role requires us to keep a balance between ensuring that there is no political bias or interference shown in our pages and providing information about what is happening in, or planned for, the local community. An electronic search of content since May 1 turned up the following results for Northern Ward councillors. One had three (very) brief entries in relation to the sale of emergency water tanks

and another mention in a caption at a WCC ceremony with an award-winning resident. A second councillor had two entries, one encouraging submissions on rural development and the other in a caption at a residents’ association centenary. A third councillor was recorded in a caption at a Muslim religious observance on May 19. Group photos are taken at events to which councillors and members of parliament are regularly invited. As we move towards elections we are, wherever possible, no longer specifically identifying councillors or MPs. We welcome more letters on this, or other topics. How are we doing? Editor

Obituary Ruth Gotlieb, QSO

Local designers among WOW finalists Anna Baines of Wilton, Stephanie Cossens, Johnsonville, and a design team of Zach McDonald-Wright, Marie Wright, and Taralee Freeman, also from Johnsonville, are among the sixteen finalists from Wellington in this year’s World of WearableArt (WOW) Awards Show. What has been called “the world’s most significant wearable art competition” is returning for its 31st season this year in Wellington from September 26 to October 13. About 60,000 people are expected to attend the 2019 WOW Awards Season. WOW competition director Heather Palmer says this year’s finalists’ work, submitted from 22 countries, is outstanding. “The designers are pushing boundaries of invention and scale, using diverse materials and progressive technology,” she says. “It never ceases to amaze me each year the sheer brilliance of our designers’ work and this year is no exception. There has been such a high level of experimentation and innovation by the designers this year, using materials in unexpected ways to create bizarre, edgy works of art.

“The next two rounds of judging occur in September.” Then, she says, they will showcase the entries “individually choreographed and placed within their magical theatrical worlds on stage at the TSB Arena in Wellington, where they will take on a new life in movement.” This year the 115 finalists were presented with six design challenges, which will form the six worlds of the stage show. Three of these worlds are recurring - Aotearoa, Avant-garde and Open, and three are new for 2019: Mythology, Transform and White. WOW chief executive Gisella Carr says alongside the many talented New Zealand designers, the 2019 show has seen entrants hailing from all corners of the globe including Kazakhstan, Czechia and Belarus alongside regular contributing countries such as Australia, China, the United States and the United Kingdom. The finalist garments will go through two more stages of the judging process, where they will be seen on stage with choreography, lighting and music ahead of opening night on September 26.

Ruth Gotlieb, who has had a long and distinguished career in service to the people of Wellington, died on Tuesday aged 96. Ruth spent 27 years on Wellington city and regional councils, and hospital and harbour boards. She also volunteered for much of her life for several community groups and charities. And, says Wadestown community centre advocate Louise Davies, their library staff are particularly sad to hear of her passing, as there is a special association between this cherished Wellington icon and Wadestown library. “Back in March 1988, as a city councillor, she was present for the official opening of the new Wadestown library along with the then Mayor of Wellington, Jim (later Sir James) Belich.” Thirty years later, in March 2018, when there was a special celebration during Wadestown annual Village Fair day to mark the library’s 30th birthday,

Louise invited Ruth back, as the Guest of Honour, to cut the anniversary cake. “ I was delighted when she immediately agreed to come along, saying ‘Of course darling. I’ll be there with bells and whistles on. I love a party!’ – as you can see in the accompanying photo taken on the day. “She was such a vibrant personality and an iconic Wellingtonian who had given so much to the city over the years,” says Louise. Ruth was named Wellingtonian of the Year in 2010 and well into her retirement continued to use her free time to help the community. She did volunteer work for Trade Aid, the Cancer Society, Newtown Community Centre, and Ronald McDonald House, among other organisations Members of Wadestown library and community centre staff are putting together a small display to commemorate Ruth’s connection with the library, Louise says.

DURABILITY WITH GERMAN ENGINEERING Our uPVC windows and doors will easily last 40 years or more in New Zealand. uPVC frames and uPVC windows do not need painting or special maintenance. uPVC is resistant to dirt and environmental conditions and cannot be deformed by moisture or temperature changes, like timber and aluminium joinery. Additionally the uPVC itself will never rot, rust or corrode. uPVC windows and doors can be easily cleaned with soapy water. Some periodic maintenance of hinges and moving parts is recommended. uPVC’s thermal performance easily ex-

ceeds that of thermally broken aluminium joinery at the same or better price. uPVC as a material naturally has a high thermal resistance. With engineered air chambers and 23mm thick double-glazing, it becomes one of the best window insulation solutions available. Our uPVC products are designed and engineered in Germany and are affordable compared to competitors. They are steel reinforced for the highest degree of strength and security, providing ultimate durability and resistance to New Zealand conditions.

An Evening Post issue in April 1907 carried this story Those people who enjoy the view of the city and harbour from Kelburn will shortly have a new and pleasant source of attraction, in the shape of a spacious and excellent tea kiosk. The kiosk, being built by the Kelburne Tramway Company at a cost of 3500 pounds, commands a unique view of the whole city and every part of the harbour. The specious building, designed in a way the full panorama can be seen, consists of a large tea room measuring 36ft x 24ft. It is fitted with big plate glass windows and glass doors, and has a broad covered verandah 12ft wide. On the east or front side, the verandah swells at the corner with two alcoves with large glass windows. The alcoves are surmounted with curved towers.

Looking back...

The northern and southern sides, open in the front, are fitted with sliding windows, which can be closed when the unchecked wind of the hills is too fresh for comfort. The western, or rear of the building contains the servery, retiring rooms, kitchen and coganate apartments, while upstairs provision is made for the private conveniences of the caretaker. The ceilings are moulded fibrous plaster and a very handsome appearance. A carriage drive runs completely round the kiosk, and it is intended to sow the bare soil with grass and plant shrubs. 22 men are employed on the work, which should be finished in about a month. Jas Meyer is the contractor.

Northern suburbs’ headwaters affect health of Porirua Harbour Call for new trustees to help protect our water Is the health of the Porirua Harbour important to you? – become a Harbour Trustee. The Te Awarua o Porirua Harbour catchment is huge and many people don’t realise that all of the water that flows through the many streams in the catchment deposit sediment, debris and contaminants into the Porirua Harbour. Storm water off your roof and the roads from Johnsonville, Newlands, Paparangi, Woodbridge, Grenada, Churton Park, and Tawa flows north via numerous streams into Porirua Stream and eventually into Porirua Harbour. Likewise storm water and water from roads from Pauatahanui, Whitby, Aotea, Camborne, Pukerua Bay, Elsdon and Porirua East contribute flow into the harbour. That means that all of the road run off, storm water and household run off from cars and houses being washed from areas as far as Johnsonville to the south and Pukerua Bay to the north, impact on the health of the environment along the waterways leading to the Porirua Harbour. Porirua Harbour, comprising the Onepoto Arm and the Pauatahanui Inlet, is the centre-piece of Porirua City.

It is the largest estuary system in the lower North Island. As well as having a nationally significant wildlife area and breeding ground for numerous species of fish, the estuary has cultural, recreational, economic (transport), and other wildlife habitat values. The recent Te Awarua o Porirua Harbour Whaitua Implementation Report is a landmark assessment of the health of the harbour and catchment. It describes the reasons for the steady decline in the quality of fresh and coastal water and ecosystems. It provides 76 recommendations to reverse this decline. The Trust is well placed to monitor and

report on how well local authorities respond to the urgency described in the Whaitua report. The Porirua Harbour Trust is looking for new trustees, especially from the rural sector, Tawa to Johnsonville, Porirua and northern part of the catchment, to ensure that the health of our harbour is protected and improved while providing economic and cultural opportunities, now and in the future. If you are interested in becoming a trustee to assist with the catchment and the harbour’s future please visit our website at www.poriruaharbourtrust. org.nz for more information.

Some optimism on event centre fit-out By Glenise Dreaver

Karori Event Centre chair Tony Roddan says there is still a real air of optimism about the drive to get the centre up and running after a “relatively quiet” two-year hiatus since it was built. There remains a need to raise around $800,000 or so in order to fully fit it out so the building can be fit for use. He says the tr ust has recently received grants that will allow approximately $150,000 of work to be undertaken in fittting out some toilets and kitchen spaces. “While undertaking this work brings us closer to completion, it would be preferable and more cost effective to complete all works at one time. However the grants are sometimes made on the basis that funds are spent within a set time frame.” Tony went on to say that the trust had been working with Wellington City Council officers to explore an

idea of using the centre as a space where books from the decommissioned Wellington Central Library could be stored in order to support the WCC and promote the centre for use. However, he says, “Research showed it wouldn’t be cost-effective for ratepayers.” Other talks with council officers are looking “quite positive” though he wants to wait until a clear direction is established before commenting. In the meantime the trust is still exploring all options including the current use of the venue for an exhibition of photographs by WCC councillor Simon Woolfe in the windows. “While we can’t open the venue to the public at this stage, we encourage folks to come and have a look at some stunning photo art, which is for sale. “The trust is very grateful to Simon for generously commiting 50 per cent of the proceeds to us”. The exhibition will run over the next few weeks and the photos will be changed regularly.

Call for new trustees to help protect our water By Glenise Dreaver

The Porirua Harbour Trust, or to give it its full name, the Porirua Harbour and Catchment Community Trust (2011) is charged with protecting that harbour’s waters. Advisory trustee Donna Sherlock of Glenside explains that they are seeking more local trustees with an interest in ecology for this vital work. “The name Porirua can mislead people,” she says. “Our area covers all the water that flows from streams, lagoons and lakes into the Porirua Harbour.

“Local people often don’t realise that includes parts of the Newlands area and Johnsonville, Churton Park and Tawa catchments, as well as the many tributaries from local catchments that flow into the Pauatahanui Inlet. “There are also many streams from Kenepuru, through to Plimmerton, that flow through to the significant body of water.” The non-elected group is an independent advocate and advisory body for the harbour, which has a nationally significant wildlife area. It also, Donna says, has huge recrecreational, ecological, and

economic significance. They run a significant educational programme into schools, for example, Churton Park and Amesbury school, to name just two local school stream care examples. Their programme, and their educator, is mainly funded by the private UK-based charitable trust, the Phillips Family Foundation. The Greater Wellington Regional Council and the Porirua City Council both provide some funding. Wellington City Council’s Northern Ward representative Peter Gilberd, is also a member. Their major work in the last five

years has involved an exhaustive study of local waterways, pulling in experts from bodies such as NIWA and funding a private ecologist to set a baseline on where the waters are at, on a line ranging from green (good) to red, meaning its condition is not good enough. There are, Donna says, some profound results, especially relating to households. “We know there are many illegal – primarily historic cross connections - draining sewage into the freshwater catchment that householders themselves have no idea about.”

The results are now being further discussed and absorbed before the next stage begins. Donna says they are inviting prospective trustees to apply and, if their skills match up, they would be appointed rather than elected. “We are looking for people with an interest in keeping our water clean who can commit time, work constructively with others and help solve problems,” she says. “We bring the community and politics together.” For more information go to Porirua http://www.poriruaharbourtrust.org.nz/

RELIEVING INDIGESTION & HEARTBURN Who hasn’t suffered from indigestion and heartburn, especially after overdoing it with food or drink, or when rushing meals? These are very common conditions although for some of us, indigestion and heartburn happen for other reasons and can cause considerable discomfort. It’s good to know that help is available from your Self Care pharmacist. With indigestion (or dyspepsia), we can feel sick and experience gas, or a bloated feeling, in the stomach. “Indigestion causes discomfort and pain in the area between your ribs and belly button, and occurs during eating, or immediately after” advise Self Care pharmacists. A common symptom of indigestion is heartburn, where there is a burning feeling rising upwards from the stomach towards the throat. The acid contents of the stomach return, or ‘reflux’, back into the oesophagus (the space between the throat and the stomach, which is shaped like a tube) and causes irritation there. Indigestion and heartburn can be caused by: • Foods such as cabbage, onions, cucumber, curries and chocolate. • Certain drinks, e.g. alcohol, fizzy drinks, strong coffee and tea. • Eating food too fast; eating fatty or large meals, especially late at night.

• Stress and anxiety, smoking, bending and stooping, being overweight. • Pregnancy • Certain medicines – such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines for pain and arthritis. Try to identify the cause of your indigestion or heartburn and if possible avoid these things. If the medicines you take give you symptoms, let your pharmacist or doctor know. Sometimes taking food at the same time as you take your medicines can help. Remember to take your medicines with a glass of water, while sitting or standing upright. According to Self Care pharmacists, “there are changes you can make to help prevent or reduce symptoms of indigestion and heartburn. They include stopping smoking (see the Quit Smoking fact card); avoiding rich, spicy, fatty foods, and large meals late in the day, and eating smaller meals; having plenty of physical activity – at least 30 minutes most days; losing weight if you are overweight (see the Weight and Health fact card) and learning to relax and sleep well (See the Sleeping Well fact card).” Sometimes focusing on lifestyle changes may be all that is needed to stop indigestion and heartburn. If medicines are required, your pharmacy

has a wide range of products available for the short-term relief of heartburn and indigestion symptoms. “We can assist you in selecting the one that is best for your situation”, advise Self Care pharmacists. Antacids neutralise excess acid in the stomach. They can provide quick and effective relief but their effects don’t last long. Reflux symptoms can be relieved by medicines called alginates that form a ‘raft’ on top of your stomach contents, helping to prevent them being regurgitated. Where these medicines do not help, or symptoms are experienced as often as 2 or more times per week, other medicines may be required that decrease the amount of acid made by the stomach. There are several different types of medication available that do this. Your pharmacist can, in certain circumstances, supply these medicines without a prescription for the short term relief of heartburn symptoms. Your Self Care pharmacist will advise if this is appropriate for you. “If there is still no improvement with lifestyle measures along with short-term use of medicines, or if symptoms suggest another cause, then we would refer you to your doctor for further investigations and treatment”, confirm Self Care pharmacists. “Our Indigestion & Heartburn fact card has more information, so ask us for a copy.”

Powhiri welcomes ERO team By Glenise Dreaver

Gigi-Belle and Hunter Tirikatene-Sullivan dressed to formally welcome the ERO team to St Benedict’s Catholic School.

A visit from the Education Review Office (ERO) can be a stressful time for any school as a team arrives on a three-yearly rotation system to review and publicly report on the quality of education and care of their students. . St Benedicts School in Khandallah however, under the guidance and support of parent Mayana Tirikatene-Sullivan, welcomed Tuesday’s arrival of a three-strong ERO team with a powhiri. Pupils Hunter and Gigi-Belle TirikateneSullivan, with cloaks, headdresses and carefully-drawn moko, led the ERO team on to the area in front of the school office with the traditional karanga their heritage entitles them to use. The team was welcomed with other

traditional protocols including speeches in Maori, one from principal Michael Hinds and another from board chair Richard UretaJennings. Karakia were sung by the students, who also performed a haka of welcome. There was a warm and very powerful response in both Maori and English from ERO team member Rod Webster who, twenty minutes before the ceremony, had unexpectedly met Mayana. “Her mother (Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan) was my cousin. Her brother and I played together.” And in his speech he drew a parallel with the religious focus of Sir Eruera Tirikatene, Mayana’s grandfather, the first Ratana Church MP, with the education being provided by St Benedict’s. The team’s visit ends today, Thursday.

A week on and it still hurts It’s ok to still be hurting - proud but hurting. It’s been a week since the Black Caps tied the Cricket World Cup final and left Lord’s trophy-less. Perhaps that’s part of the hurt, right? A week on, I’m still looking for a way to rationalise the outcome. There are few people to blame, for every error made by the Black Caps, there’s an equally important part of the game

where you can make an argument the team was just unlucky and was stopped by England, a team of destiny, who rode every bit of luck they could muster in one day to win the trophy. Captain Kane Williamson has received universal praise for his humility in the face of the situation. Already considered a worldclass player, his stock has risen globally after his frank comments

in the days following the game. English match-winner Ben Stokes, who was born in New Zealand, has been nominated for New Zealander of the Year and, given his feats, he is a frontrunner. The final was proof that great games can be played without the ball dominating the bat. In today’s age where boundaries and flat pitches are all the rage and 300+ scores are the norm, a

game where 241 played 241 was the best game of cricket of many of our lives. It may be many years before New Zealand contends for a Cricket World Cup. The next one is in India in four years which will start a run of unfavourable conditions for the team. That reality stings too. No one will come closer to winning a World Cup than Wil-

liamson’s men did. Public apologies from players seem pointless, there’s no blame from anyone. It’s been a cricketing haze as people tried to unpack what they sat through for nine hours. The problem is, we are being told we lost, but the statistics don’t back that up. It’s still raw, it’s tough to talk about but rest assured, it will get easier.

One to remember By Fraser Kirby

Fundraiser for van The Queen Margaret College Parents’ Association is fundraising for a school van to make getting to sports and cultural events more accessible. They have decided on some fun to help with this. Ethel and Bethel, a comedy duo hailing from Christchurch, will be a big feature of their planned Bingo evening on Friday August 2 at 7pm. “This promises to be a great night with love and laughter, not to mention a spot of Bingo,” says spokesperson Nicki Jackson. “We have lots of prizes for those skilful Bingo players, and fun for all courtesy of Ethel and Bethel,” she adds. Tickets to the event, to be held at the college at 53 Hobson Street, cost $30 each, or $280 a table. The cost includes a Bingo card and a glass of beer or wine. The bright lights of Fraser Park shone on North Wellington Football Club when they played Lower Hutt in their Central League match on Saturday evening. T h i s wa s t h e Jo h n s o n ville-based side’s first visit to the recently completed Sportsville multiclub facility. It was one to remember with a 5-3 win against the Wellington Phoenix Academy-affiliated team. There was action aplenty in the eight goal thriller. North Wellington came flying out of the blocks to snatch a 4-0 lead inside the first 16 minutes, with two goals each from youngsters Nathan Simes and Jesse Randall. There would be more goals in this very open and expansive game with Kiernan Hughes Mason heading in a pinpoint cross from Corey Larsen either side of goals from Lower Hutt making the half time score 5-2 with North Wellington comfortably in front. Both sides started the second half with much more focus on defence. Lower Hutt were the side chasing the game and needed goals forcing North Wellington to sit back a little more. Oskar Van Hattum managed to score

for Lower Hutt a third and final time to collect a hat trick. Norths soaked up the pressure and endured a nervy final 15 minutes to collect the 5-3 win and record victory over Lower Hutt in both the home and away fixtures. North Wellington remains in fourth position with three games still to play. They take on third placed Wellington Olympic at Alex Moore Park on Saturday at 2.30pm. In other matches of the round, Western Suburbs ambushed Napier City Rovers 4-2 to claim top spot from them, Miramar Rangers had too much firepower for Waterside Karori winning 5-0. The battle to avoid last place continues with Wellington United and Wairarapa United drawing three all and both sitting on three points and Wellington Olympic had too much in the tank with a 5-2 win over Stop Out. The North Wellington Men’s Reserve side had a good day at the office winning the curtain raiser 2-1 over Lower Hutt at Fraser Park. In the Women’s Prem ier League on Sunday, Nor th Wellington kept their top of the table lead despite their game being postponed due to a n unplayable pitch at Raumati.
