Alert 4 Stay home, reduce contact for four weeks

LO CK DO WN

By staff reporter

At 1.40am on Monday the nation braced itself for the announcement from Government that New Zealand has moved up to COVID-19 Alert Level 3, then to Level 4 on Wednesday. Here in Wainuiomata non-essential businesses have closed, schools closed, all events and gatherings cancelled, and people asked to stay home in isolation. This includes the Wainuiomata Newspaper which closed its office yesterday. Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside say these are challenging times for everyone but a step that is needed for our region and NZ as a whole. “The Wainuiomata News will cease printed publication as of now until further notice. WATCH our website www.wsn.co.nz “STAY SAFE and look after each other and our community. Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look a little harder.” Prime Minister Jacinda Adern made the announcement as NZ escalates its response to stop the virus in its tracks. “Due to the early and strong steps we’ve taken, New Zealand is fortunate

not to be as hard-hit by the virus as other countries but the trajectory is clear. We are under attack like the rest of the world and must unite to stop the worst from happening here,” she says. “If community transmission takes off in New Zealand the number of cases will double every five days. If that happens unchecked, our health system will be inundated, and thousands of New Zealanders will die. “Together we can stop that from happening and our plan is simple. We can stop the spread by staying home and reducing contact. “Moving to Level 3, then 4, will place the most significant restrictions on our people in modern history but they are a necessary sacrifice to save lives. “At Level 3, we are asking nonessential businesses to close. This includes bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, cinemas, pools, museums, libraries and other places where people gather together. “Essential services will remain open, such as supermarkets, banks, GPs, pharmacies, service stations, couriers and other important frontline service providers. Cathy Davel has always been larger than life with a passion for the stage. She has graced the stage of Wainuiomata Little Theatre for the last two performances playing Rosie in 2019’s ‘Mamma Mia!’ and Carlotta in 2018’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’. “I’m lucky that most of my roles have involved very little acting,” she laughs. “I was terrified of playing her. I hadn’t sung that high in years and having to open the show was terrifying but exhilarating.” Much of her time growing up she describes as being ‘theatrical’. Attending Havelock North

High School in the South Island with Roger Sevenson lit the spark for Cathy. “He created a passion,” she says. “Our school was very musical.” One year, during her time in high school, Cathy took the plunge and auditions for the National Secondary School Choir in 1990. To her surprise and delight, she made it into the choir and many months of hard work later, the group travelled to Hawaii. That year they won the Pacific Basin Music Festival. “It was intense,” she says. Among being an accomplished singer, Cathy also played the cornet and trumpet in her youth. Eventually ‘life’ got in the way,

she says, and it wasn’t until her debut as Carlotta in ‘Phantom of the Opera’ that the passion was lit again. “I always swore I’d get back into it when my children were grown.” Cathy likens the act of putting on a show to pregnancy, she laughs. “You start very excitedly, then it becomes laborious, then your baby arrives which is like the show.” Cathy’s favourite part of being in a show is the close intense relationships you form with your castmates over a short period. “I love to bring enjoyment to other people. When people come to the show and say how much fun they had, it’s lovely,” she says.

Country unites to halt virus Continued from page 1. “Gatherings, indoors or out, and of any shape or size, must be cancelled. This means weddings, birthday celebrations and other gatherings. “Workplaces should have everyone working from home. Essential services will stay open at every level, but must put in place alternative ways of working including physical distancing of staff of two metres.

“The school term break will be brought forward. For the remainder of this week and through the term break schools will establish ways to deliver teaching online and remotely as quickly as they can. “Public transport and regional air travel is restricted to those involved in essential services and freight, with domestic air travel permitted in some cases for people to leave the country and to get home to

self-isolate. Private travel is allowed. “I say to all New Zealanders: The Government will do all it can to protect you. Now I’m asking you to do everything you can to protect all of us. Kiwis – go home. “Today, get your neighbour’s phone number, set up a community group chat, get your gear to work from home, cancel social gatherings of any size or shape, prepare to walk around the block while keeping a two-metre distance between you.

Public Anzac and Poppy Days cancelled

“If in doubt, don’t go out. “These measures will be in place for four weeks at this point. “New Zealand is fighting an unprecedented global pandemic and it will take a collective effort of every single New Zealander doing the right thing to give us our best shot at curtailing community outbreak,” Jacinda Ardern said. inbrief news Graduations postponed Victoria University of Wellington is postponing its May graduation ceremonies and parades. All qualifications due to be awarded at the ceremonies will be granted by the University Council at its meeting on May 4. A digital copy of degree certificates will be issued to My eQuals, the official platform for degree documents. The university will send a physical copy of the certificate to graduands as soon as it can and will reschedule the ceremonies when it becomes possible. All graduands will be able to attend a ceremony if they wish to.

Transport measures Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher says all 70 of the 500 Metlink bus drivers who are aged 70+ will not be rostered on at this time. This means cancellations across the bus network. Metlink is also asking passengers to be aware of physical distancing and to leave a seat between each other where possible. And from Monday, March 23, all-cash sales were removed from buses, trains and stations across the region

Kind student contest Service men and women marched down Queen Street last year. This year it has been cancelled. Photo: Megan Connolly Last week Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association(RNZRSA) announced that because of the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19), they will be cancelling all public ANZAC Day Services on 25 April and will postpone its national Poppy Day Appeal. This is significant because this will be the first time that public services to commemorate ANZAC Day have been cancelled.

A local organiser Jane Chamberlain says “I am sad that we won’t have the ‘normal’ service but I feel should err on the side of caution and be vigilant until a vaccine or similar can be found,” she says. While the public gathering has been cancelled, the celebration and gratitude for Anzacs will still continue on. “The only thing missing will be a service, as the flag will be

raised and the white crosses placed out, named flags will be hung and each grave will get their poppies as usual. “Until more is known we need to stay within government and RSA guidelines,” Jane says. RSA national president BJ Clark says New Zealand is under attack and so the bonds of service, sacrifice and support that our community has demonstrated in times of war,

adversity and natural disaster must once again come to the fore. “COVID-19 is a powerful and dangerous foe. RSA’s and the communities they are part of, all-over New Zealand must fight hard to protect our whanau and kaumatua from the transmission of this virus in keeping our proud memories of service and sacrifice.”

The NZ Vegetarian Society has launched its 2020 Think Kind Student Competition, open to all primary, intermediate, and secondary-aged students to encourage them to think about kindness to animals. Students can use their talents to help the animals who share our country by writing something like a poem, drawing something like a poster, creating something like a short film or starting something like a petition. Last year’s winner ran a beach clean-up, which saw 200kg of rubbish removed from Tahunanui beach Every student who enters will receive a certificate, and every project will get a prize. There are spot prizes, too. The overall winner will be determined by a people’s choice vote and will be announced on October, 1 World Vegetarian Day. That entry will receive $1000 for their school. Go to www.vegetarian.org.nz for guidelines, inspiration, and free activities. Students must submit their entries online by August 10.

Taking the climb Tania sets sights on new challenges By Megan Connolly

Tania Rivers has been walking the Wainuiomata Hill for two years. The last time the Wainuiomata News talked to Tania on April 17, 2019, she had walked the hill over 1000 times. Nothing has changed, she says, and still makes the trip every day. Only now she has lost count. “I can do the hill with my eyes closed. “I can get up there in 11 minutes now,” Tania says. Now she is setting her sights on new challenges. “I’ve changed my goal to running.” After losing 75kg 10 years ago and moving to Wainuiomata four years ago with her two daughters, Tania initially challenged herself to walk the hill every day. The hill is an easy walk and accessible for many people both young and old and is a great start to a fitness journey, she says. A personal trainer, Tania is focused not just on the physical health of her self and her family, but the mental health too. As more people are choosing to socially distance themselves and spending more time at home it is important to create an environment that is welcoming and works with a new routine. “People are going to be in isolation which is inevitable,” she says. “We have to make sure we’re staying mentally well. “It is a huge thing and it is very easy to be overwhelmed. “Getting time outside is vital to keeping us sane.

The lady who walks the hill: Tania Rivers, is taking on new challenges on her fitness and life journey. Photo: Megan Connolly.

“Even just focusing on nutrition is a good way to stay healthy.” Over the last week, Tania has been sprucing up her home space and using it as an opportunity to work on unfinished projects. “I’ve made some new curtains

and redecorated the house to make it more lively. I’ve set up an area in my kid’s rooms for school work. “I had to ask myself: ‘Am I going to be happy in this space for a while?’.”

“When you’re hardly ever home it’s easy to not notice it impacts.” Creating a positive and uplifting space is an essential way to keep healthy and sane, she adds. “Create a circuit in your garage or backyard. Get creative.”

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Support locals who sponsor sport It is now time to remember that small business who sponsors your son or daughter’s sport team or the club you are part of. Winter club sport will need all the sponsors they can get when and if it gets underway for 2020 and the only way that can happen is if people shop and support their local, independent businesses during the Coronavirus outbreak. We’ve all seen a match day

programme with team lists and then a bunch of sponsors which we all sometimes ignore. Well, they cannot be ignored going forward. Never before in our lifetimes has community spirit been so required in the face of unknown adversity. The next time your child makes a team that needs financial support from the community to get them to their tournament, it would be

worth throwing a bit of money their way. The Coronavirus and social distancing will also hurt pokie machines. While a positive on the surface, this will also hurt the amount of revenue they generate which is often redistributed in the form of grants to sports teams and clubs over the next 12 to 18 months. If people want sports clubs to

survive and thrive they will need to support the businesses to do the same in the first instance. The flow-on effects of this pandemic will not only hurt people Monday to Friday but could also prove costly on Saturday’s on the sports fields and courts. Feel free to support your local sports stores too as they will be hurting without the booming winter season trade.

If you do not need something right away, how about getting a gift card to be used at a later date. That way, the business gets the money they desperately need now and you will get the benefit when things get back to normal. Check on those close to you, your families, friends, neighbours and colleagues so that normality can resume as quickly as possible, one small step at a time.

Lace to play in Peru By Megan Connolly

Lace Tangianau left, will be heading to Lima, the capital of Peru, in August to play softball for the White Sox girls team. This is the second time Lace will be heading overseas to play in the world series. Last year she played for the under 17s team in California. The team is made up of young women from all over New Zealand but Lace is the only player from Wainuiomata to represent

her country this time around. The biggest difference between last year in Los Angeles and this year’s games in Peru will be her experience, she says. “Last year I spent most of the year on the bench. “With this team, we’ll be calmer in stressful situations because we know what to expect.” Lace has been playing the game since she was a child, she says, starting out with tee-ball when she was four years old.

Since then she has played on many teams around the Wellington Region, featured in the Wainuiomata News in 2011 and is now playing for the Hutt Valley Saints Premier 1 team. Playing softball is important to Lace because it offers companionship with her teammates. “I enjoy the social aspect and the friends I play with the most,” she says. “In softball, you do a lot. It’s more than just one thing.” Dad Charlie and mum Rexelle

will be heading to Peru with Lace this year, which they are excited about. “We’re lucky she has taken us to many countries with her sport,” Charlie says. Lace’s hopes for the future are that she will gain a scholarship and to make Top A, the best team, in the world. “I definitely want to be a White Sox players one day.” You will be able to livestream Lace’s matches online in August.

YOUR PLACE ON PEEL?

Set back from the road, on a large section, this home provided many years of good service to the family we are working for. It is, however, time for it to find a new family that will love it just as much. This is a great example of a home that has not been touched in some time, but still appears to be well looked after giving it the 'move-in-ready' tick.
