Further planting will be undertaken later this year and in time, the whole site will be covered in native bush. This includes fast-establishing species to facilitate ground cover, and slow-growing woody species such as totara.

"We will move to establish trees on the old site, which is in line with what the Cleanfill Community Liaison Group wanted. I want to thank the Liaison Group for their work, ultimately helping us reach this stage," says Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry.

"With climate change top of

mind, it feels right to be turning this space into one which will play a small but important role in our journey to lower carbon emissions, by sequestering carbon as the plants and trees grow."

Earlier this year the site stopped receiving most materials, with the exception of topsoil

to enable planting to take place.

The Cleanfill needed to be closed by June 2022 due to consent conditions, as Hutt City Council agreed not to extend the consent.

Alternative cleanfill sites are available at Kiwipoint, Ngauranga, and at Fergusson Drive in Upper Hutt.

COVID-19 recovery business activation grants Hutt City Council has announced a $150,000 fund to help attract customers back to hospitality and retail centres in Lower Hutt.

Grants will be available to help create and boost events, activities, and any other ideas businesses may have in order to bring people into the city, add vibrancy and benefit businesses in the local area.

Mayor Campbell Barry says that this will be a help to businesses who have suffered the recent impacts of COVID-19.

“Like many areas across the country, we have businesses in Lower Hutt that have been

hit hard by COVID-19. This fund gives hospitality operators, retailers, and business organisations across the city the opportunity to access funding, specifically for events and activities that will attract more customers and benefit the local business area.

“We’re open to all ideas on what this could look like whether that be collaborations between businesses and local musicians and artists for a special event or experience, or simply boosting the marketing effort for an existing event to draw a bigger audience,” says Campbell Barry.

A Secure Future Last Thursday was Budget Day. We set out our plans to secure a high wage, low emissions economy and provide security for Kiwis in good times and bad. The impact of the world-wide pandemic has been felt by us all plus the rising prices of fuel, resulting from the invasion of Ukraine. It was great to hear about the cost of living package that will roll out extra support this winter.

A one-off cost of living payment will be coming out from 1 August. Over 2.1 million Kiwis earning up to $70, 000 per year will get $350, paid in three instalments. This is to help people who don’t get the Winter Energy Payment make ends meet over the next few months.

This will help alongside the measures already introduced in March. We cut the tax on fuel and we are extending this tax cut and reducing the road user charge until the end of August. The half price fares on public transport has also been extended until the beginning of September.

Anyone who has a Community Services card will be able to enjoy the benefit of half price fares permanently.

We are determined to helping Kiwis get a fair deal at the check-outs, good food at a good price. Supermarkets will no longer be able to block competitors entering the market. We will welcome new retailers and the competition this will bring.

The commitment to transform out health system and deliver better services nationwide continues. We want a service that delivers for ALL Kiwis and doesn’t depend on your postcode. The focus is moving to care and investing in the workforce to succeed. There will be money for specialist mental health and addiction services and we are supporting our young people to tackle the challenges they face in this space.

More good news was announced with an increase in the dental care grant has increased from $300 to $1000! I know this will make a real difference to people in our community who really need dental care but just can’t afford it.

Plus you can spend it on the dental treatment you need throughout the year and not just in an emergency.

An awesome $11.5m funding from the School Investment Package. There are 104 projects underway including the rebuild of the two major public high schools in the Hutt – Wainuiomata High School and Hutt High School. It’s great to see the progress on these two big projects for our community.

It has been a tough couple of years for us and we have all worked hard to come this far through COVID. Now we are in a strong position to meet the next set of challenges and opportunities to provide all New Zealanders with economic security in the good times and the bad.

Donny gets ‘magic’ award A quiet servant of the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club has been honoured with a newly created award.

Donny McAlpine is the first recipient of the club’s Bryan Watt Magic Award.

Every club survives because of the many volunteers behind the scenes, providing opportunities and working in the spirit of helping others.

The newly established Bryan Watt Magic Award acknowledges an individual or group who represents and displays the values of vol-

unteering and helping others within our club.

Bryan’s ‘magic’ spans over 20 years of working across various roles in the club and being an inaugural member of the Wainui Ale Guzzlers Association (WAGS) - a place for all retired players past and present.

Donny is a special man who you’ll often see early hours on Saturday morning setting up or packing up William Jones Park.

Players won’t ever see him as he comes in to clean the changing rooms and empty bins week in and week out.

Our grandson who is three is quick to pick up on concepts, The latest concept he has mastered, Is that of volume as a concept, Addition and subtraction are also nearly mastered.

John Lomax Classic to tee off tomorrow The Wainuiomata Lions Rugby League Club will hold the John Lomax Classic golf fundraiser tomorrow.

The event at the Wainuiomata Golf Club a chance to honour one of its most celebrated club men, former Kiwis captain John Lomax who is back in Wainuiomata catching up with friends and family.

John started out at Wainuiomata in the 1980s before playing 112 NRL games for the Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys and Melbourne Storm between 1993 and 2000.

He also played for the Kiwis 16 times and is the Father of All Blacks prop Tyrel Lomax, with both men expected to attend the event tomorrow.

All Black and Hurricanes prop Tyrel Lomax will be on hand tomorrow to support Wainuiomata Rugby League’s golf fundraiser named in his Dad’s honour - The John Lomax Classic.

There will be spot prizes and nibbles with all funds raised going to the club.

Solving gardening problems: By Wally Richards

A tip that I was given, which I am going to try myself this spring, is in regards to curly leaf in stone fruit such as nectarines and peaches in the spring.

You simply place a quarter a teaspoon of Condys Crystals (potassium permanganate) per litre of warm water with one mil of Raingard and spray the trees and the soil underneath in spring prior to leaf show and every 10 to 14days later for the couple of months when the disease is active..

The lady gardener that told me swears by it for control.

The potassium permanganate is a oxidizing agent that kills fungi, the Raingard prevents the rain washing it off for up to 14 days.

It is during rain that the disease attacks, lifted up onto new leaves by the splashing water.

Potassium permanganate is locked in the film of Raingard which slowly breaks down under UV. The potassium permanganate is neutralizing the spores of the curly leaf disease as they come in contact.

You will need to spray to keep the newest leaves protected, as well as the existing ones as they grow larger, so depending on growth rate spray every 7 to 14 days.

If you try this method this year please let me know the results.

Another gardener uses the same on their roses with great results starting with a spray in winter after pruning and a 2 weekly spray during the season of the foliage and soil as required.

A lot of gardeners have glasshouses or tunnel houses to extend the growing season of tomatoes and other plants.

Some grow in the soil in the glasshouses where others will grow in containers.

Soil in a glasshouse can harbor diseases or what we call pathogens.

These love a chemical/acidic environment where they can thrive.

Beneficial microbes and fungi love a alkaline, chemical free environment so the use of chlorinated tap water, chemical sprays along with herbicides are going to create problems for your tomatoes and other plants.

Chemical sterilizing the soil with Basamid is no longer an option since the chemical was banned.

I have in the past suggested potassium permanganate with salt as a soil drench but this takes out both the beneficial and the bad.

Some gardeners dig out the soil and replace it with new soil which is not only a lot of hard work but you cannot be sure the new soil will not have its own problems especially weed seeds.

A new product called Terracin is the

natural way to clean up soil diseases.

Mix the Terracin at 2ml per litre of water and apply to one SqM of moist soil.

Or mix at 20ml to 10 litre to water over 10 SqM of moist soil.

Terracin uses a combination of a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BS-1b, a beneficial soil microbe and the enzymes, bacteriocins, secondary Metabolites & signal molecules from the fermentation of Enteroccocus faecium to suppress a broad range of fungal pathogens.

During the next 3 weeks keep the soil moist (not wet) with nonchlorinated water.

After 3 weeks we need to feed and build the populations of beneficial microbes so we apply Mycorrcin to feed them.

Once you have done this its a matter of not using chemicals in the glasshouse including chlorinated water.

A Special filter can be attached to your hose to remove the chlorine which is the same as what I have been using for several years.

The next problem in a glasshouse is the sheltered environment which is very good for insect pests to breed.

During the growing season you have to keep them in control with the following: sticky yellow whitefly traps, Neem Tree Granules, Wallys Neem Tree Oil and Wallys Super Pyrethrum so they will not get completely out of hand.

Fumigating the glasshouse at the end of the season to kill all the pests that are harboring over in cracks and places means a clean start in the new season.

Wallys Sulphur Powder is available for this purpose.

This is ideal for fumigating a glasshouse in winter when there are no crops growing. (May dehydrate and kill plants so empty the house first.)

If you have plants that you are going to pull out anyway then leave them in the house when you burn the sulphur which will kill the pests on them rather than take them outside to affect your other gardens.

To use: Close all vents in the glasshouse.

Place an amount of sulphur onto a steel hearth shovel and light. It is hard to light unless you have a very strong flame.

You can aid this by putting a little mentholated spirits on part of the sulphur and light that.

Once it starts burning it is hard to stop.

Place the burning sulphur in the middle of the house and leave immediately.

Close the door and let the sulphur fumes do their job. Leave house closed for a few days.

The amount of sulphur burnt will depend on size of the glasshouse.

For a house 2.5m x 2.5 m burn about 50 grams of sulphur.

I did this last winter after cleaning all the plants out of my glass houses and once outside it was a sight to see so many whitefly and adult psyllids beating up against the glass trying to escape.

Likely burning sulphur safely in out buildings for cluster flies in winter would be a good way to control them also.

Hen houses for mites when the hens are locked outside then later air the house and dust Sulphur powder over the perches and floor.

Southern Remutaka Aerial Possum Control Operation EcoFX wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Remutaka Ranges. The operation is being undertaken as part of OSPRI New Zealand’s TBfree programme to protect local farms from tuberculosis infection.

Control Area The Southern Remutaka treatment area is located in the Remutaka Ranges. The block extends from Wainuiomata in the north, to the bottom of the north island (Turakirae Point in the south). It includes sections of East Harbour Regional Park to the west and extends from Coast Road over to Ocean Beach in the east.

Blues no certainty in Super Rugby playoffs All roads go through Eden Park for the Super Rugby title but that doesn’t mean the Blues are unbeatable.

With one round remaining, The Blues will play the Highlanders in a quarter-final in a fortnight.

That will be a tough task for the men from the south, who have been better in the latter part of the season but lack the firepower of the Blues, who have been the best team all

season.

However, the Blues are not unbeatable.

Fans looking for hope only need to look at how the Brumbies outmuscled them for 80 minutes on Saturday in Canberra only for the visitors to be bailed-out by a Beauden Barrett drop goal after the final hooter for a 21-19 win.

The Hurricanes, Chiefs or Wara-

tahs should take heart from the Brumbies effort.

The Crusaders have the championship pedigree and they won’t be shell-shocked at any point in the playoffs even if they’ve been below their best at times this season.

The media has been beating the drums for the Blues to win their first major title in 20 years and fair enough, they are our biggest city.

However, there is a lot of water to pass under that bridge before a champion is crowned and the Blues are anything but a sure thing.

Every team who faces them will be an underdog playing with less pressure.

Should the Crusaders face them in a likely final, the red and blacks will be an underdog which will be an unfamiliar position for the measur-

ing stick team of Super Rugby for the past 25 years.

Rest assured, Scott Robertson’s team would love to repeat the win that started their dynasty in 1998 at Eden Park, thank you James Kerr for that last-gasp try.

The Blues deserve to be favourites but handling the pressure and expectation will be no sure thing for Leon McDonald’s team.

Tough weekend for Wainuiomata footballers

It was a day of Island Bay United versus Wainuiomata football as five out of the ten games were against each other. The Capital Premier side travelled to Wakefield Park for the second week in a row.

Sitting even on the table with goal difference the only thing separating the two sides, it was always going to be an entertaining game. Island Bay were on the front foot from the start and unfortunately for Wainui, they were never able to get out of first gear, down 2-0 at half time,

Adam Ross gave Wainui a lifeline when he converted from the penalty spot but the home side were simply too good and found the net two more times to walk away 4-1 winners.

The Reserves had a tough day out at Wellington College. Despite Christian Donaldson also converting from the penalty spot, it was not enough as they lost 5-1.

Halfbaked finally got their first win of the season in a 10 goal thriller as they walked away 6-4 winners.

The Thirds lost 4-0 while the Horns were on the receiving end of 12 goals as they went down 12-2.

In the other games that didn’t involve Island Bay, Roundballs defeated Wellington Marist 3-2.

The Undertakers had several chances to find the back of the net but were unable to and ultimately paid the price going down 6-1 to Upper Hutt. Pasifika carried on their unbeaten run as they beat North Wellington 3-0, not by class or skill but by default.

Finally, Saturday’s games were rounded off by the OC’s who travelled to Delaney Park to face unbeaten Stokes Valley. It was a game where the stars aligned, and the lads turned up as they put that unbeaten streak to an end with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Tim Zwart and Tony Brown.

Sunday our Wildcats travelled to Newtown Park to play against Wellington United and unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned for our ladies as they also had a

tough day losing 8-0.

Tough day for Wainuiomata netball Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball Club had a tough day in the office on Saturday with all teams coming up second in their fourth matches of Round 1. The positive taken from the matches as all teams came out injury free. All management reported there were aspects of brilliant netball in their games, particularly by the younger players, but plenty to work on.

Meanwhile the Wainuiomata High School Junior netball teams completed their third round of grading on Saturday with all teams winning comprehensively.

Standout performance by the Junior 2 team starting with only 5 players against St Orans and ahead 5-0 at half time.
