North Wellington streets went silent and people hunkered down for a second nationwide level 4 lockdown last week which is set to continue until at least 11:59 pm tomorrow.

Johnsonville continues to be an area of interest in Wellington’s COVID-19 Delta strain outbreak though there is cautious optimism it has been slowed.

12 cases in Wellington Jville locations of interest Continued from page 1.

As of yesterday afternoon, there were 12 active cases in Wellington, that number had risen by one from Tuesday.

The Wellington case was a part of the 63 new positive cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand announced, taking the country’s total number of community cases to 210.

The Wellington case reported on Wednesday was a close contact of existing cases, Bloomfield said.

There are six Johnsonville locations of interest where the Ministry of Health is encouraging people to check whether they may need to isolate if they were in the area during a certain time.

Those locations include the Mobil petrol station on August 17 between 8:20 pm and 8:35 pm.

The Roast Canteen on August 17 between 5:30 pm and 5:45 pm.

St Pierre’s Sushi at Johnsonville Mall on August 17 between 5:15 pm and 5:30 pm.

1841 Bar and Restaurant on August 17 between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Wellington band up for SOUNZ Award The Wellington based collective Plan 9 of David Donaldson, Janet Roddick and Steve Roche are first-time finalists for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award.

They have been nominated for their work The Bewilderness, for altered string quartet with two voices.

Plan 9 says, “It’s a real honour to be nominated for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award | Te Tohu Auaha surrounded by the huge number and growing diversity of talented composers here in Aotearoa.

“A lt hough work i ng f ul l time as composers, we work predominantly in the area of screen music usually working to an outside brief.

“Creating The Bewilderness gave us a chance to break away from those outside limitations, to challenge ourselves and compose and experiment in ways we wouldn’t usually have

time or headspace for.

“We set ourselves a new set of constraints – to compose within the context of an altered string quartet – double bass, cello, and two violins, and incorporating vocalists Janet Roddick and throat singer, Jonny Marks.

“The composition is loosely based on the unsettling experience of the 2020 Covid19 lockdown from the sudden shock through the stages of drama and disruption to periods of peace and introspection.

We are extremely grateful to the three generous musicians who worked with us on this recording: Ruby Solly, Tristan Carter and Jonny Marks.

“Drawing on our 35-year history of working together as a composing partnership combined with the support and ease of our collaboration enabled us to explore writing, arranging

Arts Advocates Required for Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Aotearoa theatre advocate Lisa Maule, from Karori, is part way through a four month Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to increase the visibility of New Zealand arts on the world’s most popular open source information hub after receiving a grant from Wikimedia Foundation.

A Wellington-based Edit-a-thon on Saturday went online due to the level 4 lockdown.

Lisa fell in love with her mission editing for the encyclopedia giant after a workshop held at The Dowse. “I was inspired to take action after discovering I couldn’t link biographies to major New Zealand arts companies, because the company pages just didn’t exist,” says Lisa. “I created pages for Taki Rua and Pacific Underground and fell

in love with the power of celebrating our rich legacy of Aotearoa Performing Arts with the world.”

Wikipedia Edit-a-thons are a meeting point for Wikipedia editor training, collaboration or concentrated effort to create pages, updates or corrections on Wikipedia.

With a target of 20 new Wikipedia articles, in the first two months Lisa and her Edit-a-thon volunteers have created 62 new articles including Kila Kokonut Krew, Oamaru Opera House, choreographer Jack Gray, costume designer Kate Hawley and director Sara Brodie.

“It’s a great start with 62 new articles in the last two months – showing how much we need to cover. We have so

much more to do and we’d love more volunteers to join the cause.”

As a final push Lisa is looking for passionate volunteers to help increase the world’s knowledge on New Zealand theatre, dance, opera, circus, access arts, community arts, Pasifika arts, M ori arts, LGBTQIA+ arts, political activism arts, venues or any niche art they’d like to research.

Aotearoa artist biographies are also vital for addition to our visibility, with only 19% of New Zealand arts biographies on women.

Rotarians and Scouts join in native tree planting effort A large group of volunteers, organised by the Wellington North Rotary Club ascended to the hilltop of the Odell Reserve earlier this month to help with the increased native tree planting effort.

The Reserve, which lies on the ridge between Ngaio and Khandallah, is home to two large water reservoirs.

The Ngaio Scout Group, accompanied by family members, joined Rotarians and their families in the effort.

The gathering was to take part in the Rotary Peace, Remembrance and Community Forests Trust, which is a centennial initiative marking the founding of Rotary in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1921.

During the century, Rotary’s power has come from harnessing communities and volunteers to make a difference.

More than 200 native trees, Manuka, Kanuka, Matipo, Mahoe, Karamu and Koromiko, were planted in the Reserve. The hardworking crew of Ngaio Scouts, their family members, Rotarians and their friends made light work of the job which was completed in about an hour. Sustenance was arranged by Hilary, wife of the Rotary Club’s Past President, David Young.

With start-up funding through Te Uru kau – Forestry New Zealand’s One Billion Trees Fund, the Rotary Trees Trust will initially support the planting of a minimum of 200,000 ecosourced native plants throughout New Zealand.

Organisations are welcome to apply for funding support for their planting project, provided they are confident they can meet the criteria, such as there must be a

minimum of 750 stems per hectare, of which 300 must eventually grow to be trees of five metres in height, or more.

Plantings must be protected for a minimum of ten years. This may be by covenant or by contract with the Rotary Trees Trust.

The ultimate goal is to create native ecosystems that support the goal of a pest-free Aotearoa New Zealand and to help address climate change.

The Rotary Trees Trust will initially provide for the planting of a minimum of 200,000 eco-sourced native plants

History clearer for Glenside Halfway House Glenside Progressive Association president Claire Bibbey has been able to shine a light on the historic halfway house in the suburb.

Claire Bibby writes: “I am excited to say that I have finally been able to research the story of Alexander and Margaret Brown, who built the current Halfway House in Glenside.”

“This break-through was made due to advances in technology, which makes it easier to search Papers Past on the internet.

“Additionally, the National Archives is making more of its collection available digitally.”

Alexander Brown, emigrated from Dumbarton, Scotland, to the Australian gold rush in Victoria, as a carrier, carting goods for the min-

ers. He travelled onto New Zealand in 1861 and spent three years as a carrier on the Otago goldfields, then went to the Wakamarina (Canvastown) goldfields before choosing to live at the Halfway House.

He was well known around the country for his handling and breeding of heavy horses, the Draught horses that pulled coaches, hauled timber and were used for farm labour. He was a Judge of gold medal winning Draught horses at the Wairarapa A & P Show. The photo above, taken by William Williams, is of Draught horses competing in a ploughing event at an A & P Show. It is in the Alexander Turnbull Library collection.

The family built a new Halfway

House and stables which they called Gowan Bank. The old Halfway House, located about where Twiglands entrance is today, was tenanted and burned down in 1891.

A newly built railway ran along the route of today’s motorway, passing through several farms, including the Brown’s. Alexander took the Railways to Court twice, once for a train running over three of his prize horses, and once for an uncontrolled burn on his property. Between the two Court cases, the Brown’s 13 year-old daughter Margaret Brown unexpectedly died.

The Brown’s moved to Hawera and leased their property. Alexander Brown died in 1900 and his body was brought back to Johnsonville

Thomas eager to take up Northern Chorale challenge Thomas Nikora is the Northern Chorale’s newly appointed Musical Director.

Thomas comes to the choir with wide ranging experience as a conductor, pianist, and composer and he has ambitious plans for the Northern Chorale.

Lockdown Tasks? YIP! Hey everyone! Hope you all made it home and hunkering down for the next few days. With all that is happening in the world, with all the war, covid, disasters etc, I think we are so lucky to be living in this wonderful country. Sure, we aren’t perfect and there is always room for improvement, but I can’t think of any other country I’d rather be in right now.

As we can learn from all that is going on in Australia, we shouldn’t be thinking of everyone being ‘stuck’ at home, rather being ‘safe’ at home. The next 3 day is a perfect chance to get up to speed with any maintenance tasks! Here are a few tasks / home work for your homeowners out there!

1. Clean your gutters! Ok, I’m repeating myself here, but with all the bad weather we’ve had if you haven’t cleaned your gutters yet, you are gambling with your property! So for that one point, here is another reminder!

2. Light fittings – If you haven’t switched to LED, the build-up of dust and dead bugs can be a hazard. Give all your light fitting a good clean! And while you are up there, check your smoke alarms as well.

3. Moved insulation – If it is a cool day head up into your attic space and check all your insulation is in place, don’t leave any gaps! Even the smallest gaps will affect the efficiency of your home.

4. Paint Touch Up – Hopefully, if by some small miracle we have some clear/ dry weather, head on outside and look for cracks in your cladding. Make sure your cladding is in good condition! If you see any fractures, seal them properly and paint over! This ensure your cladding does its job and stays weathertight!

PROTECTING YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH We know when our children are sick, they go from being active and alert to quiet, grumpy, sleepy, clingy and wanting more cuddles. Often they lose interest in food.

The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above 37°C) indicates that the body is ‘fighting’ infection from either bacteria or viruses.

Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.

Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signify the common cold. “Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children. Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.”

Keeping your child comfortable in bed, giving plenty of fluids, and using liquid medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold.

“But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when measuring-out doses of liquid medicines. Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.”

It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumatic Fever. This is a serious illness that affects mainly Maori and Pacific children and young people, aged four and above.

Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further.

If you are unsure then get in touch with your pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses.

Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important after going to the toilet, and before eating. They should not share cups and drink bottles, nor spoons and other eating utensils. Tissues are best for blowing noses, and then they should be thrown away immediately after use.

Immunisation is generally one of the most effective ways of protecting children against infections that can cause serious diseases and associated complications (including death).

All forms of immunisation work by causing the body to produce an immune response, in the same way it would if exposed to the disease but without the child suffering all the symptoms and consequences. In the future, when the child comes into contact with the disease, the immune system responds quickly and helps prevent the child developing the disease.

The World Health organisation and the Ministry of Health recommend immunisation for your children. However there may be cases where it is not suitable to immunise and it is important to see your pharmacist or doctor regarding possible risks and/or contraindications.

Children with asthma or allergies, or who are recovering from an illness, such as a common cold, can be immunised.

Free immunisation, at specific times in a child’s life according to the Ministry of Health’s immunisation schedule, is available to all children in New Zealand, to protect against a number of diseases – diphtheria, haemophilus influenzae type b (a cause of childhood meningitis), pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and whooping cough.

Side effects from vaccines can sometimes occur and include redness and soreness at the injection site. There may also be mild fever.

While these symptoms may be upsetting at the time, the benefit is protection from the disease.

More serious reactions to immunisation are very rare.

GARDENING THIS WEEK August and it is all starting to happen: By Wally Richards Day light hours extending, spring bulbs start to flower, dormant roses and trees starting to move and the weather is fairly mild as it has been for most of the winter.

The increase in phone calls and emails from gardeners I am receiving also shows that the new season is now underway.

A word of caution though as you can never tell whether a cold snap will take place in the next couple of months or not. This means with warm loving plants dont plant out unless they are well prote’cted or in a glasshouse or similar.

I always like to get an early start with a tomato or two which should be available from garden shops about now and if you lose them there is not much lost, but if they are not damaged by late frosts then you have a very early start.

It is too early for cucumbers, pumpkins unless you are in a warmer region but you could germinate a few seeds on a heat pad and hold them in a glasshouse for later on. % ! can be planted out now; tender types leave till closer to Labor Weekend which is the traditional time for planting them.

Sprout and plant a few quick maturing seed potato varieties now so you beat the potato psylid before they establish in the warmer months.

The correct way to grow is not to plant the tuber but to layer them in a tray of sand or potting mix.

Once there are spouts up about 3 to 5 inches lift the tuber and par off the sprouts taking a bit of the tuber and the roots that have developed.

The Khandallah Cornerstone Resource Centre Trust is a registered charity established in 1983. It has been supporting the Khandallah community for nearly 40 years – the last 10 years based at the Khandallah Town Hall in Ganges Road in the Khandallah Village.

The opportunity has arisen to appoint a Community Centre Manager - this is a new role leading the Trust’s work in community outreach. You will lead the management and development of programmes, services and activities, to meet the needs of our diverse and growing community.

We are looking for an experienced and talented manager to support the wonderful service provided by our existing team, while introducing new, well researched community led programmes and services.

You will be reporting to an experienced and passionate board who are excited about the research and development and continuing the valuable work of this successful and well-run organisation.

Enrolment / Ballot Information For Terms 1 & 2 2022 The Board of Trustees invites applications from ‘out of zone’ parents who wish to enrol their children at Crofton Downs Primary School for 2022. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment zone, details of which are available from the school office or at www.cdps.school.nz Applications for out of zone places are now being invited for those students who will be eligible for enrolment in Terms 1&2 in 2022. Applications are to be submitted on the official enrolment form, which is available at the school office or online enrolment on the school website.

There are: 5 Out of Zone places available in NE / Year 1 5 Out of Zone places available in Year 5 1 Out of Zone Place in each of Years 2,3,4,6.

You will need to be able to demonstrate: đŏ positive leadership and effective management capability đŏ market research, service development/implementation and marketing experience, with consistent and positive results đŏ strong collaboration and communication skills đŏ good administration and computer skills đŏ 5 years+ relevant work experience đŏ you are a New Zealand citizen or eligible to work in New Zealand.

Where there are more applications for enrolment than there are places available the Board is required to fill any vacant out of zone places by ballot.

The deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is Tuesday 28 September at 12 noon.

If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, selection will be by ballot. The ballot, if required, will be held on Wednesday 29 September under external supervision. All applicants will be notified over the following week.

Plenty of debate for Halberg Awards The Halberg Awards in 2022 will throw up some interesting selection dilemmas.

The Olympic success combined with the World Test Championship success of the Black Caps could make for some intriguing debates.

The Team of the Year category already looks congested.

Potentially the gold medal-winning men’s eight may have a slight advantage over the Black Caps but that is a toss of the coin.

The men’s eight is the blue riband event of rowing and the team were underdogs to claim gold which lends itself to the New Zealand sports psyche.

The Black Caps, based on pure population and passion for the sport should never beat India in cricket but their win in the World Test Championship final was a satisfying outcome but not a shock.

Kane Williamson’s men have been world-class for many years

and matched up well on paper against India in English conditions.

The fact it is New Zealand’s first world title in cricket after a series of close failures (2019 was a draw in my eyes), will conjure some votes I’m sure.

The Black Ferns women’s sevens deserve some thought too but their achievement lacks the same global impact as the rowing or the cricket.

The same could be said for Lisa

Carrington and Caitlin Regal with their K2 500m gold medal.

Sportswoman of the Year has to be Lisa Carrington, that should be a guarantee as things stand despite Emma Twigg’s heartwarming story behind her medal in the women’s single sculls.

The Sportsman of the Year is more wide open.

Does Williamson go close as Black Caps captain?

What about Hamish Bond as the

architect of the men’s eight crew?

Both have strong cases but it’s hard to quantify individual awards in a team sport.

Coach of the Year should be Carrington’s coach Gordon Walker with honourable mentions to Gary Stead and women’s sevens coach Allan Bunting and rowing coaches Mike Roger and Tony O’Connor.

Debate is good for the awards evening as it has lost a little lustre of late.

Will Anthony puts best foot forward

Johnsonville runner Will Anthony has the world at this feet.

The 17-year-old exceeded his own expectations in claiming the New Zealand Under-20 cross country title a fortnight ago in Dunedin, completing the 8km in 25:53.

Will, who runs for the Olympic Harriers is preparing for his final lot of high school exams and is weighing up his scholarship options at several NCAA Division One colleges in America for 2022.

“I was pretty stoked with how it went in Dunedin,” he says.

“I wanted to win and see what time I could run “To go sub-26 minutes was pleasing and to do faster kilometre split times than what I did last year even though I ran 2km further this year was satisfying.”

Will beat his nearest competitor by 59 seconds.

“I’m currently talking to several universities and getting some interest which is exciting.

“I want to get that balance between running and academics right.

“I want to go into physics so that’s important I find the right fit for that as well as my running.”

Will splits his time between running on the track and the road and is unsure which will become his focus later in his career.

“I’m still playing it by ear.

“On the track, I run everything from 1500m to 5km and will do a couple of 10,000m as well.

“But I do enjoy cross country so I’ll see where I feel most comfortable at university and see where it takes me.

“Certainly when you see the Olympics, it gets you excited about potentially running there one day,” he says.

Will has one eye on the World Cross Country Championships which are meant to happen in Bathurst in February, depending on the COVID-19 restrictions.

In the meantime, even with the lockdown in New Zealand, Will remains committed to his training while eyeing up the next opportunity.

Marsden netballers show their skills The Samuel Marsden Collegiate Junior A netball team competed at the College Sport Wellington Junior One Day Netball Tournament at the ASB Sports Centre earlier this month.

In a pool with Onslow, HVHS, Wellington High, Chilton, and Porirua, Marsden won all their games finishing in the top four in the competition.

They were up against Tawa in the crossover they unfortunately lost so ended up playing QMC for 3rd and 4th. They had a massive 20 minute battle with the ball, eventually losing 19-12.

It was a big improvement on the sixth place they man- Samuel Marsden Collegiate’s junior A netball team finished fourth in their one-day Wellington netball tournament earlier this month. aged 12 months ago.

Football season faces uncertain conclusion Following a further extension of the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown this afternoon, Capital Football has made a number of decisions regarding the end of the football season.

These have been made in consultation with councils, who are unable to work on the fields during the level 4 lockdown.

All senior games this weekend are postponed. Work continues to determine how the leagues that have yet to be completed – or have yet to find definitive winners/ promoted/relegated teams – will conclude. A further update on this will be given in the coming days.

All junior and youth football is cancelled this weekend.

Only the under-17 Capital Development League will continue into September as this was due to continue until September 26.
