The staff at the Marae went the extra mile to make children feel welcome with balloons decorating the entrance.

The Ministry of Health says parents and caregivers can now protect their tamariki against COVID-19 with two child doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

Tamariki aged 5 to 11 are not eligible for AstraZeneca or booster vaccinations but

the child formulation of the Pfizer vaccine is a lower dose and smaller volume compared to the adult formulation.

The Ministry of Health says it has been chosen based on a trial which showed the lower dose was safe and had few side effects in this age group.

Tamariki need two doses of the vaccine to be fully protected and it is recommended these are at least 8 weeks apart. The time between doses can be shortened to a

minimum of 21 days if needed, for example if the child is starting significant immunosuppression treatment.

This will need to be discussed this with the child’s doctor.

If a child has their second vaccination after they have turned 12, they should still complete their vaccination course with the child dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

One of the first in line for her vaccination was Ellie Briggs and although she was nervous at the thought of getting the injection it

all went smoothly.

“I was feeling nervous but everyone was kind and caring and made it easy for me,” Ellie says.

“I am feeling good about getting my next vaccination done now.”

Her dad and Hutt City Councillor Josh Briggs was with her and was impressed with the way it went.

“The team are doing a fantastic job informing and supporting our tamariki. Thanks for all they are doing to keep our community safe,” Josh says.

Council under red light Now we’ve moved to Red under the COVID-19 Protection Framework, there have been some changes to the restrictions at public facilities and sites.

Libraries, Neighbourhood Hubs, Pools & Fitness Suites, a nd Museums now have

lower occupancy limits and the Les Dalton Dog Park is closed at Red. People will be required to show their My Vaccine Passes at most public facilities, scan in, and wear a face covering.

At Red, the Council Administration Building (at Laing’s

Road) also requires people to show their My Vaccine Pass.

Red is not a lockdown. Businesses can stay open and people can do most of things they normally do, including visiting family and friends and moving around the country.

There’s plenty of opportunity in aged care recreation and diversional therapy says Enliven’s new Recreation Team Leader at Woburn Home.

In 2018 Mark Digol resigned from his role as a registered nurse in the Philippines and headed to Auckland to study towards a diversional therapy qualification. A move to Wellington took him to Woburn Home where he began working with elders who needed hospital-level care.

Mark’s favourite part of his role was working one-on-one with residents giving hand massages, reading aloud, and assisting with table games and crafts. Now he’s looking forward to supporting a team of seven recreation staff to upskill and introduce creative new ideas.

Enliven’s diversional therapy programme is central to the home’s elder-directed philosophy of care which ensures that each resident has companionship, fun and meaningful activity in their lives, no matter their age of ability.

Each year the Public Health Association honours an individual's or group's contribution to public health action through their prestigious public health awards, Public Health Champion with the Tu Rangitira o Te Ora, and the Pasifika Award.

This year Kokiri Marae General Manager Teresea Olsen was presented with the extremely well deserved award for her and the staff at Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services.

The award was presented by the Public Health Association of New Zealand for services across Te Awakairangi for Maori and whanau in particular to Covid.

Teresea has had an amazing journey since 1987 encouraging acces to marae based health services based with the primary focus of kaumatua and koroua

living longer.

Teresea had an ambitious vision for the people that Kokiri Marae serves. Over a period of 40 years Teresea's vision has built Kokiri Marae services into a major Maori health and social services provider in the Hutt Valley.

Her leadership has inspired a workforce of committed people and supporters to contribute and build on the Kokiri vision. The award is in recognition of the primary and public health services delivered to the Kokiri Marae Whanau and community and for leading work during the Covid-19 epidemic to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of Maori Whanau, hapu and iwi. During that time, the Kokiri Marae whanau delivered over 40,000 kai packs across the Wellington region, set up a marae-based vaccination centre, a mobile bus vaccination centre and has

New Zealand Police will be implementing a mandatory vaccination policy for all employees, contractors, volunteers, suppliers, new employees and visitors who work or enter Police sites.

Everyone covered by the new policy will be required to have had their first COVID-19 vaccination by 11 February and to have had their second by 11 March.

Anyone visiting a police station or police site to access essential police services (e.g. front-counter services) and people brought to a station for services in relation to enforcement and operational activities (e.g.victims and witnesses) are exempt from the policy.

People held in Police custody suites are also not required to be vaccinated.

I think we need more traffic police on the roads.

People need to slow down and have more patience when driving.

Cellphones are part of the problem. The fines need to be steeper.

The sooner we have self drive cars the better.

Petitioning for a safer community

Wainuiomata residents have taken their fight for a safer community online with over one thousand four hundred signatures so far on a petition calling for the local police station to be manned 24/7.

The petition is a call to action for the New Zealand Police, Prime Minister Jacinda Adern, Hutt City Council Mayor Campbell Barry the Hutt City Council, Hutt South Labour MP Ginny Anderson, and National list MP Chris Bishop.

It says, “as local tax paying residents, we have the right to feel safe in our community, walking our streets, going to the local pool or watering hole, without fear of us, our children and elderly, being assaulted by the rising abuse that is happening with some youth in our community. People are too scared to go to Queen Street money machines or even the library, where they congregate to intimidate people whilst getting their free wifi.”

We as residents of Wainuiomata

demand that the police station be manned here 24/7 with regular presence up and down Queen Street to move them along. Why should the rest of our young be punished, feeling they can’t go to places, because they might be “stepped out” for a fight, while they run rampant. Time for a change, please sign and share this petition.

We as a community need this.

We have to protect our young and elderly, before a fatality happens.

Since it began locals have been keen to sign and leave comments: “Something needs to be done about these kids before someone takes matters into their own hands.

When you fear for the safety of your own children going to the shop, for a swim or a ride on their bikes in case they become victims of these kids. Our grandparents are afraid to to go to the shop or money machine because they intimidate them.

It’s beyond ridiculous and unfair on the community to have to deal with this! I don’t understand how it has to get to this point and

Nurses need for campervans

With booster vaccinations underway at Wainuiomata Marae the launch of a second line of defense against COVID, Kokiri Marae’s mobile clinic’s in campervans, has had to be delayed due to a lack of staff.

The buses have now been taken off the road and the smaller campervan units are able to access areas the bus couldn’t get to.

They are urgently seeking two to three nurses who can come and staff the mobile units to help get the first vaccination numbers up further and administer other health survices.

The campervans are to be deployed in the Lower Hutt suburbs in areas of high need.

Kokiri Marae General Manager Teresea Olsen says they need the nurses to be able to get the mobile units underway.

“We are really short staffed and we need to get back on the road,” Teresea says.

“We have got two campervans and if we could get three nurses or even two we would be really happy . It would really, really make the difference.”

The nurses that staffed the bus were part time Teresea says and they have gone to full-time jobs while the campervans where being fitted out.

She says the positions are fulltime but they would also consider anyone who is available for a few days a week.

Wainuiomata Community Patrol are planning another fundraiser this year with a difference which will be soon revealed.

Last year 500 tickets were sold and the lucky winner was Becky

Boyd ticket 192.

From the raffle which was drawn late last year, $2,500 was raised which helps keep the community patrol car on the road.

“We are very grateful for the many donations from the com-

munity and local businesses which helped put together a prize worth over $1100 in value,” Wainuiomata Community Board member Dawn McKinley says.

The raffle was drawn by Senior Sergeant Dave Tweedale.

Swimmers are being advised to take caution while dog owners should keep dogs on leashes or avoid the Ruamahanga river at Double Bridges as toxic algae, including detached algal mats, have been identified at the site.

The site is located near the Mel Parkinson Reserve, north of Masterton.

Greater Wellington Marine and Freshwater Team Leader, Dr Evan Harrison said “Toxic algae has increased to amber alert levels at the site meaning we strongly advise caution to swimmers and to check the LAWA website regularly for updates before getting in the water”.

The warning bears greater significance for dog owners as dogs like the smell and taste of the algae and a small piece, only around the size of a 50c coin, is enough to kill a dog.

“The risk is higher still with detached mats being found, meaning the algae has broken off rocks in the riverbed and can wash up on the river’s edge, within easy reach for dogs, said Dr Harrison.

With this warm weather set to continue over the next week, caution is advised for people and their pets until this warning has been removed from the LAWA website” Greater Wellington is currently monitoring popular swimming spots around the region on a weekly basis to ensure the community knows when and where it’s safe to swim.

Members of the public who think they or their dogs have been in contact with toxic algae should see their doctor or ring Healthline on 0800 611 116 and for their dogs, take them immediately to the nearest vet.

More returning to work Benefit figures released show a year-on-year fall of around 21,300 people receiving a main benefit in the December 2021 quarter.

“Our response to COVID has helped to create a resilient labour market which in turn has ensured our economy remains strong.

Protecting jobs and livelihoods, and supporting more jobseekers into work will continue to be a

key priority of the Government,” Minister for Social Development and Employment, Carmel Sepuloni says.

“Despite the challenges of the pandemic, it’s encouraging to see more people are moving from benefit into work. The 2021 December quarter was the highest number of exits into work for a December quarter since electronic records began in 1996.

“Over numerous Budgets we’ve invested heavily in work focused frontline case management, and these figures show that our Government’s investment is beginning to deliver results.”

The Minister said a high point continued to be the success that front line work focused case management was having connecting people to work that have been on

benefit for longer periods.

“People on a benefit for 1-2 years and four years or more getting into work increased by 96.9% and 93.2% respectively. Those on a benefit for 2-4 years saw the year-on-year exit into work rise by 129.8%,” she says.

“We know that the longer you are on a benefit the harder it is finding employment, but by focusing on this group we are starting to

make inroads.

“There is still a lot more work to be done and we have yet to see the impact of Omicron on the employment market, but there is a lot to be reassured about in these latest figures, including the affirmation that both New Zealanders and our labour market are more resilient than some have given us credit for.”

Eating disorder treatment Eating disorder treatments may be hindered by flawed theories of illness, research finds Eating disorders are a significant health problem but effective treatment may be hampered by flawed theories of the disease, research

by Dr Hannah Hawkins-Elder suggests.

Dr Hawkins-Elder recently completed her PhD at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, investigating whether the theories behind eating disorder

treatments may be limiting their effectiveness.

I n her Ph D resea rch, D r Hawkins-Elder examined several prominent theories underlying treatment approaches to eating disorders and concluded they had “fundamental problems”.

These shortcomings may help to explain why treatments for eating disorders often have poor or only moderate efficacy, she said.

One previously influential theory (the so-called psychosomatic fam-

ily theory) assumed anorexia was caused by “dysfunctional” family dynamics—specifically, growing up in an overprotective family that had a rigid structure and didn’t cope well with conflict.

However, evidence doesn’t support this theory. “Research shows families of people with anorexia are incredibly diverse, both in their demographics and how they interact,” Dr Hawkins-Elder said.

“Theories such as this, which are outdated and based on poor

quality evidence, still problematically inform some eating disorder treatment today. They can also contribute to harmful stereotypes about the families of those suffering, and thereby cause stigma and shame.”

More recent theories focus on psychological factors—such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, responses to stress, difficulty dealing with relationships, or emotional instability—to explain eating disorders.

These theories have contributed significantly to our understanding of eating disorders, Dr Hawkins-Elder said. However, they tend to lump a large number of factors together without always providing robust cause-and-effect reasoning to explain different behaviours.

The theories also frequently fail to acknowledge and incorporate biological factors that may be contributing to a person’s eating behaviour, she say.

With recent reporting scoring some cotton face masks blocking as few as 26.5% of particles Custom Branded has stopped selling all other brands they once

stocked, effective immediately.

“Our own supplied masks have always had filter pockets however we were also using several other brands under the impression they were significantly more effective than they are,” says Daniel Sharp of Custom Branded.

The remaining variant supports

pm2.5 filters, which are available from various outlets and can be replaced with surgical mask material cut to shape at a push.

With a pm2.5 filter cotton masks are reported as blocking up to 60% of particles or more, beating out surgical masks which block 38.5%. However Daniel stresses

that “fit is also extremely important, with surgical masks, simply knotting the loops will tighten the fit and enhance the performance,”.

Even though Custom Branded’s own offering can be effective when paired with a filter, they are now advising clients who spend periods of time in high risk areas

to swap out to n95 or p2 masks.

They have previously published an article to help those with home made masks to improve their level of protection however are advising anyone with a filter incompatible mask to move to a different mask as soon as practicable.

s 2 pounds Granny Smith apples s 2 pounds Braeburn apples s 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon s ¾ cup granulated sugar s ½ cup butter s 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar s 1 (14.1-oz.) package refrigerated piecrusts s 1 egg white s 2 tablespoons granulated sugar s Butter-pecan ice cream

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Peel apples, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges. Toss apples with cinnamon and 3/4 cup granulated sugar.

2. Melt butter in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat; add brown sugar, and cook, stirring constantly, 1 to 2 minutes or until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat, and place 1 piecrust in skillet over brown sugar mixture. Spoon apple mixture over piecrust, and top with remaining piecrust. Whisk egg white until foamy. Brush top of piecrust with egg white; sprinkle with 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar. Cut 4 or 5 slits in top for steam to escape.

3. Bake at 350º for 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly, shielding with aluminum foil during last 10 minutes to prevent excessive browning, if necessary. Cool on a wire rack 30 minutes before serving. Serve with butter-pecan ice cream.

Following the Government’s announcement that the country will move to the red setting of the Covid Protection Framework at 11:59 tonight (23 January 2022), Metlink advises that no changes will be made to regional public transport services, which will continue to operate as normal.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher said “we will continue to provide full services on our bus, train and ferry network though we expect, from recent experience, that loadings will be lighter than normal as people respond to the Government’s call to work from home where possible.”

Under the new protection framework settings: s Full timetables will remain in operation s Physical distancing will not be required on board or at stops s Face coverings will remain mandatory on all public transport, and at arrival and departure points, for example airports, train stations and bus stops s Vaccine passes will not be required to use public transport s Scanning QR codes or keeping a record of services used is strongly urged.

Normal fares will remain – including cash, but contactless payment is preferred where available.

Metlink will continue to follow all government requirements under the protection framework, and we really want to emphasise the importance of minimising the spread of Covid-19.

“So we strongly urge travellers to ensure they mask-up before entering public transport and scan in, for the sake of passengers and, very importantly, of our critical front-line staff on whom we depend to keep services running.

“And given the uncertainty of the pace of the onset of Omicron in the community and its potential impact on our staff, we will continue to assess service levels throughout our network,” said Scott Gallacher.

Gardening - protecting your spray : By Wally Richards If you are like myself I only spray my plants and gardens as I need to for any problems that occur (insect pests and diseases).

On the other hand I dont mind spraying liquid plant foods and products such as Magic Botanic Liquid and 0\FRUUFLQ DV WKH\ DUH EHQH¿ FLDO WR the health of the plants and give far better results from their weekly or two weekly sprays.

I also dont mind using safe to use sprays such as Liquid Copper, Super Neem oil, Super Pyrethrum and Sulphur sprays if and when there is a reason to do so.

Seldom do I do a prevention spray program to avoid a seasonal problem such as aphids, curly leaf etc unless it is essential.

For instance this season from last winter through to harvest I used the Cell Strengthening sprays on my JDUOLF WR VHH KRZ H൵ HFWLYH LW ZDV WR prevent the devastating Garlic Rust problem.

I am happy to say that I have now harvested by garlic and had no sign of any rust at all.

The bulbs are of a medium size not as big as I would have liked but I put WKDW GRZQ WR WKH GL൶ FXOW\ RI JHWWLQJ good seed. But it is great to have my own home grown garlic again.

One of the problems when you use any type of spray is that rain or watering can dilute the spray on the IROLDJH PDNLQJ WKH VSD\ OHVV H൵ HFWLYH For instance if you are spraying Wallys Liquid Copper to protect against various diseases or to control a disease problem and a few days later LW UDLQV WKHQ ZKHQ WKH UDLQ KDV ¿ QLVKHG you need to spray the copper again to re-instate your protection.

If when you made up the copper spray you had added Raingard at the rate of 1ml per litre of spray then your spray would not be diluted or washed R൵ LQ WKH UDLQ DQG EH LQ SODFH IRU XS to 14 days. That saves a lot of work and money.

If you use chemical herbicides and you add Raingard to the spray it will LQFUHDVH \RXU VSUD\ H൵ HFWLYHQHVV E\ about 50 percent.

The reason is that Raingard acts as a chemical bridge allowing the herbicide to enter the foliage making IRU D TXLFNHU PRUH H൵ HFWLYH NLOO RI the weeds.

Many years ago I learnt some interesting information about the weed killer Roundup from reading what used to be a little booklet that was supplied with 20 litre containers

of Roundup.

The small 200ml bottles of Roundup and similar glyphosate herbicides state a rate of 10mls per litre of water.

In the commercial booklet 10mls was only used on the hardest to kill weeds and the booklet gave informaWLRQ RQ GL൵ HUHQW W\SHV RI ZHHGV GRZQ to as low as 1ml per litre of water.

Even at 5mls per litre of water it would kill most common weeds.

If you were to add Raingard to the Roundup spray you could for many weeds use only a couple of mls per litre of water.

I dont recommend the use of glyphosate unless there is no other practical solution to a weed problem but by reducing the amount per litre you are reducing the harm to the environment and yourself and that can be simply done by adding Raingard.

Here is my very old blurb sheet on Raingard: Raingard is an Organic or Natural biodegradable terpenic polymer. (made from pine resin).

Raingard does four jobs when mixed with most garden sprays including herbicides. /LNH VLPLODU SURGXFWV HJ 6SUD\¿ [ Raingard spreads and sticks the spray particles over foliage giving a better coverage.

But Raingard goes two steps further and used at the recommended rate of only 1ml per litre of spray it will rain-proof the spray for up to 14 days in average conditions and average rain fall.

This means that the particles of spray are being slowly released from WKH ¿ OP 5DLQJDUG KDV RYHU WKH IROLDJH over the 14 days.

Because Raingard locks spray particles on foliage for 14 days, then on food crops, any toxic sprays combined with Raingard should allow the 14 days withholding period or if the toxic spray has a longer withholding period, then the longest period would

If using Raingard with Neem products or sulphur sprays, then as neither Neem or sulphur are toxic, the withholding period is not important.

But if using a Copper spray, a 14 day period should be applied to food crops as copper is toxic.

Raingard saves you time and money as it removes the need to re-spray every time it rains or you water.

Raingard acts also as a bridge for systemic sprays and greatly aids these types of sprays entry into the foliage.

Used with herbicides it will increase WKH H൵ HFWLYHQHVV RI WKH ZHHG NLOOHU often resulting (from trials) a 50 percent better result, when compared to not using Raingard.

5DLQJDUG LV PRUH H൵ HFWLYH WR P\ knowledge) than Pulse to aide Roundup into shiny or hairy leaf plants.

It is interesting to note that Raingard used with say Roundup you can reduce the amount of Roundup needed to get the same results.

Instead of 10ml of Roundup to the litre, try 5ml and Raingard.

Some weeds may need this stronger solution but most will die from the suggested combination.

It is also interesting to note that another one of our Organic products, Mycorrcin if added to the mix of Roundup and Raingard will also assist with a better and now faster kill as the Mycorrcin will assist in the breakdown of the dying foliage, cleaning up the area quicker.

You might like to try this as a less harmful to the environment weed killer, 3ml of Roundup, 5ml of Mycorrcin Plus and 1ml of Raingard into one litre of water. <RX VKRXOG ¿ QG WKDW WKLV ZLOO NLOO most weeds without having to increase the amount of Roundup.

As the Mycorrcin stimulates the soil OLIH DQG EHQH¿ FLDO IXQJL LW R൵ VHWV WKH damage that herbicides do to the soil and worms.

Mental health response partnership model a success The findings of an independent evaluation of the Wellington CoResponse Team (CRT) initiative trialled in Wellington last year has concluded the pilot scheme was a success.

The year-long trial, from March 2020 to March 2021, brought together staff from Wellington District Police, Wellington Free Ambulance and Capital & Coast DHB, offering support to people in mental distress from a wider range of specialists.

Staff from the three different organisations within the CRT were dispatched to both Police and Ambulance emergency mental health callouts in the same vehicle.

The evaluation of the pilot scheme, undertaken by the University of

Trades

Otago Department of Psychological Medicine, found CRT had a range of positive benefits, including a reduction in the use of powers under the Mental Health Act and less reliance on emergency departments.

“The evaluation itself ran for the 12-month period alongside the trial,” Police Community Focus Manager, Inspector Brent Register says.

“It’s extremely positive to know the evaluation findings support what we understood anecdotally – that an approach that puts the person in distress and their whanau at the heart of decision making and care planning works.”

Conclusions from high-level evaluation findings included: s Reduction in the use of pow-

ers under the Mental Health Act s Resolving matters at point of contact, including provision of a wrap-around service s Referring the client to pathways outside of direct transport to a Police station or Emergency Department s Reduced Emergency Department service utilisation s Information sharing improved s Was viewed as culturally safe s Was considered to decrease the risk of violence.

Wellington Free Ambulance Chief Executive David Robinson says the CRT model meant the team could offer more individualised solutions and timely expert advice.

“This joint response has had an extremely positive impact, providing multi-dimensional support to those experiencing mental health distress in our community,” says David Robinson.

“As the first interagency response of its kind in New Zealand, it is a privilege as an emergency service to be part of the Co-Response Team with our partner agencies, Wellington District Police and Capital & Coast District Health Board DHB.” Relevant agencies and stakeholders, including the Police, Capital & Coast DHB and Wellington Free Ambulance, are now taking time to consider the findings with a view to determining next steps both in Wellington and nationally.

Early Murray magic boosts Aussie Open The Australian Open needed to put the emphasis back on the court, and Andy Murray achieved that with his round one win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

I can’t claim to be a career fan of Murray, firstly, I am Team Federer, and during his younger days, I thought of Murray as a dull but talented player saddled with the sporting burden of being British and all the overblown expectation that comes with it.

However, Murray has reinvented himself somewhat, at least in my eyes, after his career-threatening

hip issue.

Three years ago at Melbourne Park, Murray caught everyone by surprise by tearfully announcing he feared his illustrious career was coming to an end.

The hip injury that had plagued him since the summer of 2017 was debilitating and the only option left was resurfacing surgery that saw metal inserted into the joint.

No player had returned to the singles game after that operation - but Murray did later that year.

He’s now like a John Wayne-type tennis figure, no longer at his best,

the body not as it once was, but the mind and instincts are still as sharp as ever.

His five-set win over 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili illustrated all of Murray’s qualities and took the focus off Novak Djokovic and his ridiculous attempt to try to get an exemption to play which rightly failed after a long, drawn-out process.

Murray, at 34, has become a character, one willing to show a full range of emotion on court and I think most average sport fans find that endearing.

For a man who has won three grand slams and has been a fivetime beaten finalist in Melbourne, it was refreshing to see him get so pumped up about winning an opening round contest.

Ranked 113th in the world, Murray has repeatedly said he remains confident of going deep into major tournaments once again.

To many tennis fans, including myself, that sounds like a pipe dream.

Encouraging performances towards the end of 2021 reinforced that belief and he backed that up

by reaching the final last week in Sydney, although he was beaten by Russian Aslan Karatsev.

Murray needed almost four hours to beat Basilashvili and there were moments after long rallies where he looked exhausted.

It undoubtedly contributed to his straight sets loss in the second round to unseeded Japanese player, Taro Daniel.

Regardless, it was refreshing to see such passion from a sportsman in an age where many are becoming so buttoned-up.

Wainuiomata drop to second place With the recent hot dry conditions making for a fast pitch on home turf at the Bryan Heath Park grounds Wainuiomata were bowled out for 114 the Victoria University Club team.

It was a stunning day for a one day game with the grounds dry, hard and fast making the chances of a four more probable if the ball sneaked past the slips.

University chased down just three wickets and got a 7 wicket win relegating the Wainuiomata premier team to number two on

the table with an equal amount of points as third place Johnsonville.

Team Captain Callum Mackness says there are two games left in the one day competition so the next two weeks are pretty crucial.

Top scorer for Wainuiomata during the match was Craig Foster with 20.

With the spectre of further COVID the club has also decided to delay the 75th celebrations to 2023 with the hope that those who need to travel from overseas will be able to make it.

Ulalei back in action The Ulalei summer teams returned to action last weekend when its women’s touch team played in the inaugural Rhino Touch Tournament held in heatwave-like conditions at William Jones Park. The Rhino Touch Club led by Nui Ririnui aims to bring the game of touch rugby back to Wellington to a level and standard when it was one of the country’s great touch nurseries in the 1990s. Its kaupapa is about

getting the tamariki and rangatahi involved first.

The quality of the teams on show in the weekend was impressive and included age grade representative teams from Wellington and Manawatu. The Wellington U-16 team included six players from Wainuiomata.

The youthful Ulalei team, which was missing a handful of players attending the World School Sevens Tournament in Auckland, held

its own in the challenging heat.

Says Ulalei coach Earl Va’a, “This was a good opportunity for our girls to see touch rugby at a totally different level. They all acquitted themselves well and did the club proud. We are looking forward to next year’s tournament.”

Local club team The Granny Smiths took out the tournament beating fellow club Pure Stylez in the final. Ririnui confirmed the tournament will become an

annual event with Waitangi Weekend 2023 already pencilled in.
