Alert 4 Stay home, reduce contact for four weeks
LO CK DO WN
By staff reporter
At 1.40am on Monday the nation braced itself for the announcement from Government that New Zealand has moved up to COVID-19 Alert Level 3, then to Level 4 on Wednesday. Here in Wellington non-essential businesses have closed, schools closed, all events and gatherings cancelled, and people asked to stay home in isolation. This includes the Independent Newspaper which closed its office yesterday. Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside say these are challenging times for everyone but a step that is needed for our region and NZ as a whole. “The Independent Herald will cease printed publication as of now until further notice. WATCH our website www.wsn.co.nz “STAY SAFE and look after each other and our community. Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look a little harder.” Prime Minister Jacinda Adern made the announcement as NZ escalates its response to stop the virus in its tracks. “Due to the early and strong steps we’ve taken, New Zealand is fortunate
not to be as hard-hit by the virus as other countries but the trajectory is clear. We are under attack like the rest of the world and must unite to stop the worst from happening here,” she says. “If community transmission takes off in New Zealand the number of cases will double every five days. If that happens unchecked, our health system will be inundated, and thousands of New Zealanders will die. “Together we can stop that from happening and our plan is simple. We can stop the spread by staying home and reducing contact. “Moving to Level 3, then 4, will place the most significant restrictions on our people in modern history but they are a necessary sacrifice to save lives. “At Level 3, we are asking nonessential businesses to close. This includes bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, cinemas, pools, museums, libraries and other places where people gather together. “Essential services will remain open, such as supermarkets, banks, GPs, pharmacies, service stations, couriers and other important frontline service providers. Country unites to halt virus Continued from page 1. “Gatherings, indoors or out, and of any shape or size, must be cancelled. This means weddings, birthday celebrations and other gatherings. “Workplaces should have everyone working from home. Essential services will stay open at every level, but must put in place alternative ways of working including physical distancing of staff of two metres. “The school term break will
be brought forward. For the remainder of this week and through the term break schools will establish ways to deliver teaching online and remotely as quickly as they can. “Public transport and regional air travel is restricted to those involved in essential services and freight, with domestic air travel permitted in some cases for people to leave the country and to get home to self-isolate. Private travel is allowed. “I say to all New Zealanders:
The Government will do all it can to protect you. Now I’m asking you to do everything you can to protect all of us. Kiwis – go home. “Today, get your neighbour’s phone number, set up a community group chat, get your gear to work from home, cancel social gatherings of any size or shape, prepare to walk around the block while keeping a two-metre distance between you. “If in doubt, don’t go out.
“These measures will be in place for four weeks at this point. “New Zealand is fighting an unprecedented global pandemic and it will take a collective effort of every single New Zealander doing the right thing to give us our best shot at curtailing community outbreak,” Jacinda Ardern said. Today, Thursday March 26, Avis and John Barrett celebrate sixty years of marriage. The couple married in Avis’ home town of Levin, both worked in Wellington, John with the Customs department where he spent his career. Avis also worked there until their four children were born. They built their own home in Ohariu Road Johnsonville
in 1962, where they brought up their children and where they remain. “We like it here!” says Avis. The card from the Queen has already arrived. “It’s huge!” adds Avis. The anniversary will be marked quietly and in a very different way than they had planned. Their son had planned on flying from London, but the Covid pandemic made that impossible. Avis’ sister arrived from
Brisbane in what was to have been a total surprise for her. She went, in secret, to stay with their third sister in Upper Hutt. But the planned appearance at the party didn’t happen as the news came out the border was being closed. “We saw her for a couple of hours because she had to fly back the next day,” says Avis. The couple is undeterred. That planned diamond anniversary party will be held. “Definitely. Later in the year,” says Avis.

Kiwi Community Assistance co-founder and executive director Tracy Wellington with the latest addition to their fleet - a chiller truck that can hold 2.5 tonnes of rescued food. Photo: Jo Moore.
Food chiller truck boosts food rescue capacity By Glenise Dreaver
On Tuesday March 17, the Grenada North/Tawa based food rescue organisation Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) received a major boost. The brainchild of Tracy Wellington, supported by her husband, Phil Davies, KCA celebrated a major donation of $25,000 from the ANZ Staff Foundation, with another $10,000 from the Wellington North Rotary. These two gifts have covered the costs for a second newer chiller truck, bigger than their original, and with only 145,000k on the clock. “It holds another two tonnes of food” said a clearly delighted Tracy,
adding that their first job is training volunteers to drive it. (She’d discovered the need for that the hard way with their first truck, which she’d taken out for a “blat” round the yard). How difficult could it be? She soon found out, when she got it stuck under a roof overhang. An embarrassed plea for help was met by advice to let the tyres down, which fortunately worked.) That won’t happen this time round – professional training is to be provided by a Foodstuffs North Island Transport Division driver on his days off. The charity has grown since its beginnings in Tracy and Phil’s double garage in November 2011.
Now 92 volunteers work on the redistribution of four to five tonnes of food a month, gathered from supermarkets and other shops, as well as sites like the Johnsonville Sunday market. The food is packed up on site and given to front-line charities in the Greater Wellington area. KCA’s aim is to assist without creating reliance on regular donations. “We do this by concentrating our efforts on families who have signed up for budgeting assistance,” says Tracy. The original food rescue service has also grown to include new and used clothing, household appliances in good working condition, curtains, toys, clothing, shoes, books, linen, and furniture.

Plea for blood New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) reports a 30 percent rise in donor cancellations and ‘no shows’ in the past week. The service is asking all eligible, fit and healthy blood donors to book an appointment. “Our centres are safe to visit, and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure this stays that way,” says a spokesperson. NZBS needs 3500 donations every week. However, they have strict donor screening protocols to ensure unwell individuals, or those who have recently travelled to highrisk countries, are deferred from donating. Whole blood has a shelf life of just 35 days and without a steady number of donations, the supply may become critical. To book an appointment visit www. nzblood.co.nz or call 0800 448 325.
No Gallipoli Anzac Day The New Zealand and Australian Governments have announced this year’s joint Anzac Day services at Gallipoli will be cancelled due to COVID-19. The cancellation covers the Anzac Dawn Service, the Australian Lone Pine Service and the New Zealand Service at Chunuk Bair. Gallipoli is the biggest overseas Anzac Day commemoration New Zealand jointly runs with Australia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade leads on other commemorations in capitals across the world, and decisions on these are being made on a case by case basis.

Plea for grandparents facing huge load By Glenise Dreaver
Cecilee Donovan of Johnsonville, for decades a national leader fighting for the needs of grandparents raising grandchildren, is warning us all about the effect of Covid-19 on these families. Many of the grandparents were, until this week, of an age to be isolated at home while school was on and that she says was very hard. She welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement shutting schools from today, making childcare arrangements simpler. But moving to online learning during the pandemic Level 4 state is, for many – most – of these families impossible. “These grandparents can’t afford the internet,” she says. She reported 11 calls on that alone yesterday from around the country and four more calls from those not able to use internet banking.
“To make this work, the government needs to be making deals with trades and businesses, ensuring there are phones and internet in every home.” Cecilee has the local figures of those affected at her fingertips, along with the message of why it is so important to support them. “There are 22 families and 53 children in the Johnsonville and Newlands areas alone.” In some cases grandparents have been working, in others they have age-related health issues and can’t, she says. “And these children are with their grandparents because in their families there is no alternative.” So supporting these families is vital, the stark truth being that if a grandparent dies, state care is the only alternative. “If there was someone else, they’d be with them,” Cecilee says. And her final reminder is for us all. “Be kind. Be helpful.”
Fundraising for very special playground The northern suburbs quizzing fraternity was out in force on Sunday March 8 to raise money for a rehabilitative playground at the new Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital. More than 170 people representing 26 teams packed out the 1841 Bar & Restaurant for a fundraising quiz organised
by the Johnsonville Lions Club. It raised more than $3200 for the new playground, part of a fundraising effort involving 58 Lions clubs in District 202M. That includes the bottom half of the North Island and top of the South. “As a single entity you can achieve little but
as a multiple group you can move mountains,” said quiz organiser Jim Ng. First prize of $500 cash was donated by Harcourts Johnsonville, and a range of raffle and spot prizes were donated by local businesses such as Twiglands and Repco. Together, the Lions clubs
hope to raise $500,000 for the unique playground, known as a playscape. The playscape will provide both play areas and quiet reflective areas for young patients aged from 0 to 16 years and their families. It will be the first playground of its type in the southern hemisphere.

At left Cathedral Canon the Very Reverend David Rowe, Ruth Cook, Rev Ian Cook and Bishop Eleanor Sanderson at Ian's ordination as vicar of Karori Anglican Church.
Karori vicar formally installed Ian Cook is the newly-installed vicar at Karori’s Anglican Church. It’s not, he says, that he’s new to the parish. He’s been there for four years as the child and family youth minister, and also acted as vicar since John Hughes left in March 2018. But on March 1 Bishop Ellie (Eleanor Sanderson) formally ordained him in a ceremony before approximately 160 of parishioners, including Wellington Mayor Andy Foster. Originally a “Kapiti boy” Ian worked in the dramatic arts in theatre and television. “It seems a lifetime away,” he says. Then came the Big OE. Eighteen years of it, only
moving back to New Zealand in late 2013 after seven years in Hong Kong, where he and his Sussex-born wife Ruth were married in 1997. “I ran a Children’s Arts School and a semi-professional theatre company that toured Hong Kong prisons for four of our years there.” And then they lived in England for 11 years, Ian teaching English and Drama and Ruth managing the home with three children. “I completed my theological training at Trinity College, Bristol and my curacy in Plymouth Devon,” he says. Ian’s dramatic background came in handy last Christmas, with the writing and organisation of the parish’s
two-yearly nativity play. It was very much a local one. “Jesus was born in Ohariu Valley.” And the wise men were on quad bikes rather than camels. Just as well, because the sheep did a runner down to parliament grounds. The Mayor (yes, the real one) had to get out of bed to sort things out. (Fortunately he had time to don his mayoral chains over his dressing gown…) And so it went on. This year, it will be the immensely popular Blacklight carol service which alternates with the nativity, “It always packs out the church,” Ian says.
As I write this, I am about to head into Parliament to be one of the MPs present when we suspend Parliament for the duration of the lockdown. This is just one of the unprecedented actions which our country is taking as we collectively mount our defence, some might argue attack, on the Covid19 virus.
of catching a life threatening virus; when life under lockdown gets hard and we’re tempted to take risks, it’s important to remember we risk pushing that moment out further. The best advice I heard in deciding whether to mix is to act as though you have the virus, not the other person, and let that guide your actions.
I have detected nothing but resigned acceptance of necessity for this action, even given the consequences for our and the world’s economy.
Many will need help of all sorts; I will be fully available and my office will remain open virtually, which means all emails, social media messages and phone calls will be answered.
And that is a result of excellent communication and ensuring the population at large have been on the journey with us. I think if we had gone too fast, many would have become disengaged and the necessary cooperation would have been missing. Strong and decisive leadership required and that is what we have.
is
This is now the start of the next chapter, and we have to be realistic and understand the end of the chapter is not yet written. Success will be when we can once again go about our lives without fear
As the weight of preparation for lockdown reduces, departments will be able to start dealing with individual requirements, so can I urge patience please. We are on the cusp of major change which future generations will look back on as a pivot in history. Let them see we behaved in an intelligent, courteous and courageous manner, and came out the other end better people, better nations, and into a better world. I look to our indigenous language to find the most apt signoff; Kia kaha, Stay strong.

Hey everyone! Four weeks of lockdown… What interesting times we’re facing, while many of us are ‘working from home’ it may be a great time to get around to all those home maintenance tasks that need to be done. Apart from the obvious, here are 5 areas of house maintenance that we commonly see people forget and could end up costing you. 1. Clean your filters - Not only will your heat pump / ventilation system work better (saving power bill) but it will also avoid any build up on condensation and dampness. 2. Be fireplace ready - Winter is coming, time to give your fireplace a clean out! It is a bit messy and time consuming, but you’ve got time. Your fireplace will burn far more effectively. 3. Gutters – Clear out debris and grime, if gutters get blocked it can cause water to overflow. Depending on the construction, you may find some unwanted water getting in. 4. Drains – If you have sump / field drains on your property, open them up and scoop out any debris that may be building up. Winter rain is coming, best avoid any blocked drains! 5. Light fittings – If you haven’t switched to LED, the build-up of dust and dead bugs can be a hazard. Give all your light fitting a good clean! And while you are up there, check your smoke alarms. During the lock down, Team YIP & everyone at Collective First National will be available. This gives the team focused time to work on innovating new features and services for you all. We are also operating
By the time this is published we will be at Level 4 on the COVID-19 alert system.

A message from the Mayor Wellington’s Mayor, Andy Foster, has started to put out daily updates for residents. At the time of going to print this was the latest information he provided: Andy says: “These are unprecedented times and I want to keep you up to date with the decisions that the council is making.” He says of parking: “WCC has turned off its metered parking system in the central city. This means motorists do not have to pay for on-street parking in the immediate future.” There will however, he says, still be parking enforcement in the city and suburbs. “ The Cable Car has ceased operating until
further notice, he says.. He adds that e-scooters have been removed from the streets with a high risk of possible Covid-19 spread, due to the number of people who may use them each day. “Dog registration has been put on hold for the immediate future. “Regarding the Annual Plan, and the impact of Covid-19 on Wellingtonians: there’s great pressure on businesses and Wellington ratepayers due to the current situation, so we’re working through some options for rates to ease the burden that people are currently facing.

Safe use of medicines We all need to take medicines at some time during our lives - for some it is everyday, others only sometimes for a cold or headache. Self Care pharmacists can provide you with the fact card Safe Use of Medicines, and help you with any questions you have about any medicines you are taking. Whether you buy medicines or get them on prescription, Self Care pharmacists advise that they have some good suggestions for taking medicines properly, and for getting the best results from their use. Know what your medicines are for. Even if your doctor has explained, when you collect your medicines discuss with your pharmacist what each medicine is for. Your pharmacist can give you information on the expected effects of each medicine and how to take or use them correctly, and whether they will interact with other medicines you have been prescribed or medicines that you have purchased. Before taking any medicine, read the label carefully to confirm you are taking the correct medicine, the correct dose, at the correct time. This is especially important if you take many medicines at different times of the day. Labels have other important information such as when to take the medicines in relation to food (with food or on an empty stomach), whether the medicine must be swallowed whole, whether it has to be used-up by a certain date. Pharmacists can also advise
you if you miss a dose and when to take the next one. Sometimes medication may be large and difficult to swallow. Not all tablets and capsules can be halved or crushed and your pharmacist can help you with this. Talk to your pharmacist if you develop any unusual symptoms after you start taking a medicine. It is best to get this checked out as it may be an allergic reaction or an unwanted side effect of the medicine. Always measure liquid medicines accurately, using proper measures, to make sure you get the correct dose. A range of reusable measuring devices are available from pharmacies and your pharmacist can advise you on the one most suitable for you and your family. Drink a large glass of water as you swallow tablets or capsules. This will stop the medicine becoming stuck in your throat and help it get down to your stomach quickly to start working as soon as possible. It helps to lean forward as you swallow. Only take medicines that have been prescribed for you, and those recommended for you by your pharmacist. Do not use other people’s medicines because they may not be suitable for your health condition. Other people's medicines may interact with other medicines you are taking. Store medicines correctly and dispose of them safely. Safe means out of reach of children - preferably in a locked cupboard.

This is really vital when children come to your home only occasionally. Store medicines in a dry place, away from direct light or heat, so they don't degrade. However, some medicines need to be kept in the fridge. Don't keep medicines that are no longer needed. Despite the wastage, there are safety concerns in keeping old medicines "just in case". Don't throw them out in general rubbish, instead, talk to your pharmacist about safe disposal. Medicines returned to your pharmacist cannot be reused, and charges cannot be refunded. Discuss with your pharmacist if your medicines look different from what you are expecting. It is best to be reassured that everything is as it should be. If you are having trouble managing your medicines, your pharmacist may be able to help with their packaging especially for your own individual medication needs. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about your medicine, to get the best outcome for your health.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Support locals who sponsor sport It is now the time to remember that small business who sponsor your son or daughter’s sport team or the club you are part of. Winter club sport will need all the sponsors they can get when and if it gets underway for 2020 and the only way that can happen is if people shop and support their local, independent businesses during the Coronavirus outbreak. We’ve all seen a match day
programme with team lists and then a bunch of sponsors which we all sometimes ignore. Well, they cannot be ignored going forward. Never before in our lifetimes has community spirit been so required in the face of unknown adversity. The next time your child makes a team that needs financial support from the community to get them to their tournament, it would be
worth throwing a bit of money their way. The Coronavirus and social distancing will also hurt pokie machines. While a positive on the surface, this will also hurt the amount of revenue they generate which is often redistributed in the form of grants to sports teams and clubs over the next 12 to 18 months. If people want sports clubs to
survive and thrive they will need to support the businesses to do the same in the first instance. The flow-on effects of this pandemic will not only hurt people Monday to Friday but could also prove costly on Saturday’s on the sports fields and courts. Feel free to support your local sports stores too as they will be hurting without the booming winter season trade.
If you do not need something right away, how about getting a gift card to be used at a later date. That way, the business gets the money they desperately need now and you will get the benefit when things get back to normal. Check on those close to you, your families, friends, neighbours and colleagues so that normality can resume as quickly as possible, one small step at a time.
Community sport news With the suspension of community rugby until April 18, the Johnsonville Rugby Club will be quieter over the next month. Their latest newsletter advises that contact training is to stop until April 13, applying to all community rugby. In the meantime, strength and conditioning, fitness, ball skill drills and exercises are ok until we hear otherwise for those comfortable engaging. To keep momentum go-
ing across the Johnsonville teams, the club will be supporting non-contact training with sensible hygiene protocols. Registering for the 2020 season is continuing. with the season launch for senior rugby postponed until April 17. The newsletter also reports that tough times can bring opportunity. The club aims to run a working bee session on the weekend of March 28-29. Volunteers for that are

being sought, with plenty to do around the club from cleaning up spaces to painting that allows for sufficient social distancing. Newlands Softball Club’s junior prize-giving, to be held at the club, had to be cancelled at the weekend. The Olympic Harriers is still planning to use the Johnsonville Rugby Club rooms, in small group sizes in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines.

Rebus old men eating out They’re better known as Khandallah’s Romeos, and since late last year, some 15-16 of them have been meeting monthly for lunch. The Independent Herald caught up with them last Wednesday at 1841, where they formed a convivial group at a long table. Organiser Ken Wilson
said he had put his hand up to organise the group after it was pointed out that their twenty-strong Khandallah Rebus group sees men largely outnumbered by women. And there was no specific interest group for them either. Now there is.
“It’s functioning really well,” says Ken. “A real mix and match group, with no little cliques. “We meet at various pubs on a Wednesday once a month for about an hour or hour and a half. We’re all retired, so noone needs to rush away.”
