First residents arrive Continued from page 1 Ten percent of the village will accommodate three bed villas, ten percent one bedroom villas and the rest will be two bedroom villas.

The Wainuiomata News got a sneak peak at one of the new villas and spoke with the project director Alan Atack.

“We will be putting in some rental one bedroom villas in future stages but at the moment the ones that are built are for sale,” Alan says.

Long time Wainuiomata resident

Margaret Swanson has moved into one of the spacious two bedroom villas and couldn’t be happier to be staying in the valley.

Margret has lived in Wainuiomata for over 50 years.

She had no intention of moving to the village when they were first planned but after going to the first meeting about the village the idea struck a cord with her.

“I only went because a friend asked me to take her and it got my interest a bit,” Margaret says.

She has a whole bunch of friends from the valley moving in to the

village also which “just lovely” she says.

“It is warm it is lovely and very easy to keep clean.”

There are 11 villas completed already and an additional 11 are almost complete.

“Stage one is 22 villas, stage two is 11 and for stage three we have just poured the first slab,” Alan says.

There will be a mix of one, two and three bedroom villas with the three bedroom models having an on-suite.

All the villas are finished to

a high standard with skylights providing plenty of natural light and heat pumps for warmth in the winter and to cool things down in the summer and all the two and three bedroom villas come with a single internal access garage.

General Practitioner Dr Teresa Matuszewska and Nurse Practitioner Nasim Bi have recently joined Enliven in two new roles to provide consistency of medical services in its Wellington homes.

In April Dr Teresa and Nasim began providing medical services to Woburn Home in Lower Hutt; Longview Home in Tawa; Huntleigh Home in Karori and Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville.

“This GP/Nurse Practitioner partnership is an innovative programme introduced to help support our homes to provide consistent and holistic care to our residents,” says Enliven business operations manager Suzanne Simpson.

Dr Teresa and Nasim are no strangers to some of the Enliven Wellington homes.

Dr Teresa has worked as a GP in some of the homes for about 11 years.

Nasim joined Enliven in 2011 as a nurse at Cashmere Heights Home. While she was completing her Nurse Practitioner training she worked across the Wellington Enliven homes for more than two years.

“Both Dr Teresa and Nasim come with a wealth of experience that will bring expert clinical management and support for the residents,” Suzanne says.

Dr Teresa says under the new role her regular visits to the residents will continue, but she and Nasim will now

be available out of hours if needed.

“We are on call to them 24/7.”

Nasim explains that this is not always an option when a home is dealing with a GP or a Nurse Practitioner from an external practice.

“When you have to contact a GP, you still have to go through the medical centre,” she says. “With these roles if there is an emergency on the weekend we can go into the homes if needed.”

Bringing the two roles under Enliven also means more consistent care. Nasim says some of the homes would previously have to deal with many different GPs coming in for visits over short periods of time. PBA.

The Public Service Association strongly supports government plans to develop a social insurance scheme, which will protect all workers but particularly those employed in sectors prone to change and displacement.

Unions will work together with Business NZ and the government to explore an ACC-style system, which could provide 80% of a workers’ income for a period after they lose their job.

Increased financial stability during this transition will enable workers to find jobs that match their skills and experience. This leads to decreased turnover, increased worker wellbeing, and improved services.

Social insurance will also assist in challenging labour market inequities.

Last year between March and September the number of unemployed women rose 28%, compared to a 16% rise for men.

“We’re confident securely employed workers will welcome increased support for those in more precarious jobs,” Ms Davies says.

Schools across Wainuiomata celebrated Bullying Free Week, empowering students to be part of the solution.

Konini Primary had a week of activities and assistant principal Matt Pegg says part of it has been getting students to understand what bullying is.

“It is about understanding what being rude is what being mean is and what bullying is,” Matt says.

Tinetti visits Konini

Associate Education Minister, Jan Tinetti paid a visit to Konini School this week as part of Bully Free Week.

The Bullying Free Week initiative has been running for five years and in conjunction with the Bullying-Free NZ online resource hub, aims to raise awareness of what school communities can do to address bullying and provide safe, inclusive learning environments for all learners. Evidence shows that successful bullying prevention and response requires a whole-school approach and a cultural shift – not a dissimilar format to the Positive Behaviour 4 Learning School-Wide approach that Konini school is using.

It was a great opportunity for the

minister to see hands on the work being done in schools.

“Watching children learn and interact with each other, discussing ways to be an “upstander” and how to show kindness to each other is one of the most fulfilling parts of my role. It was incredible to watch how the junior and senior buddy classes worked together at Konini School earlier this week.

Jan says “Making sure school or kura is a safe, inclusive and encouraging place to be makes a huge difference to a child’s well-being and their potential for life-long success, in education, health, personal relationships, employment, and it builds on the Government’s wider work on child well-being and poverty reduction.”

That’s why this Government is committed to Bullying Free Week and encourages student-led action on bullying. The government has also passed the Education and Training Act 2020 which ensures schools are developing safe and inclusive learning environments, free from racism, discrimination and bullying.

inbrief news COVID jab Latest research shows more New Zealanders in major demographic groups will get a COVID-19 vaccine, as the number of doses administered reaches half a million, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says.

“Ministry of Health research from April shows 77% of New Zealanders aged 16 years and over say they are likely to get a vaccine or have already received a vaccine. This compares to 69% in March,” “The results show the number of people who say they are unlikely to get vaccinated dropped to 12%, down from 20% in March and 24% in December 2020. Of the 12% unlikely, there remains a smaller group of people who are opposed, at 7.8%.”

Latest acceptance rates: t Overall – 77%, up from 69%, or 3,147,200 out of 4,082,500 New Zealanders 16 and over; t 7% of these people have had one or two doses; t Maori – 71%, up from 64% in March; t Pasifika – 79%, up from 59% in March; t Over 65s are the most likely to get vaccinated.

Ray receive his ONZM Former Mayor and Wainuiomata resident Ray Wallace received his (ONZM) Officer of New Zealand Order of Merit at a special investiture ceremony held at Government House in Wellington.

The commendation from Her Majesty, The Queen was presented to Mr Wallace by

the Governor General of New Zealand, Her Excellency Dame Patsy Reedy.

Ray received his award for his service to Local Government and his outstanding contribution to the community over the past 30 years.

The ceremony at Government House included his wife Linda,

sister Roz and 5 close friends. The officer in charge read out Ray’s citation for his extensive community work. Ray community work include many roles as chairman, president and committee member and Ray helped establish many groups and helped them flourish through his involvement and commitment.

Ray said he was humbled in receiving the Queens Honour and commendation and he paid tribute to his family who have been on the journey with him, and he acknowledged the thousands of volunteers and professionals he had the privilege of working with. “I share this award with them”.

inbrief news Apiculture conference Hundreds of beekeepers, and others from the apiculture industry, will gather in Rotorua this June, for the first time in two years, to discuss pressing issues facing their industry and to find the country’s best honey.

Apiculture New Zealand’s annual conference and trade exhibition returns to the Rotorua Energy Events Centre from Thursday 24 June to Saturday 26 June, with the theme ‘Healthy Bees, Healthy Industry, Healthy Future’.

Conference will feature presentations on some of the big issues in bee health including how climate change is impacting plant and pollinator interactions, advancements in varroa management and the use of science innovations in dealing with threats to bees.

A highlight of Conference is the National Honey Competition where honey producers from across the country vie for medals across a range of categories.

Wainuiomata icon Tony Watling has written his last ode as the twilight years take their toll. The 94 year old has been forced to give up his passion and move out of the valley. in Air-Fryer Crispy Curry Drumsticks Ingredients:

Method:

s 1 pound chicken drumsticks s 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided s 2 tablespoons olive oil s 2 teaspoons curry powder s 1/2 teaspoon onion salt s 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder s Minced fresh cilantro, optional

1. In a large bowl, place chicken and enough water to cover. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt; let stand 15 minutes at room temperature. Drain and pat dry.

2. Preheat air fryer to 180°. In a another bowl, mix oil, curry powder, onion salt, garlic powder and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt; add chicken and toss to coat. In batches, place chicken in a single layer on tray in air-fryer basket. Cook until a thermometer inserted in chicken reads 170°-175°, 15-17 minutes, turning halfway through. If desired, sprinkle with cilantro.

With overwhelming community support plans to upgrade the heart of the community gets the go ahead.

With an 8 million dollar price tag the upgrade will see the heart of the community become a welcome addition to a growing list of improvements.

With the Les Dalton Dog Park and the redevelopment of the old mall site the Queen St upgrade will meet the changing needs of the community.

Hutt City councilor Keri Brown says that the plan is the culmination of several years hard work by many people and groups.

“A lot of change is happening in our town centre, it makes sense to do the full upgrade at the same time as the new supermarket, to also encourage people to eat, shop and relax in Queen Street,” Keri says.

“Significant community engagement has taken place since 2014, including residents, businesses and groups like Love Wainuiomata. The streetscape upgrade brings together the earlier plans

and vision of what our community really value in the town centre and we will continue to keep the community updated as the streets-cape work takes place.”

For mayor Campbell Barry it is about investing in the town centre and bringing the community’s vision to life.

“It will build on the significant momentum we have seen with the opening of the new Countdown, the Les Dalton Dog Park, and the construction of both the masonic village and ongoing mall redevelopment work. We cannot let the opportunity to revitalise the area pass us by.”

Councilor Josh Briggs says the rejuvenation the town centre will be fantastic for the Wainuiomata community and one of the most exciting things is the support for the project was there from the community and the Council.

Wainuiomata Rock’n’ Rollers By: Gerald Rillstone A group of young Rock’n’Rollers from Wainuiomata recently competed at the Junior Nationals and were rapt to win and get placed in a number of sections.

They practiced for 6 months to prepare for Nationals with the guidance of coaches Jarred Rumbold and Rachel Duggan.

Zaria Simpson and Gizelle Treeweek competed in the under 13s Junior same sex section and came first place, and were well prepared for the event with the help of coaches Rachel Duggan and Dayna and Tali Wilson of Wainuiomata.

Zaria’s mum Vanessa says the Junior top team of six competed against people up to the age of 18 years and were the youngest Team to enter.

“They are all friends who go to school together in Wainui and play sports together. They thought they would try this out too,” Vanessa says.

The kids first got interested in Rock n

Roll when they began Junior Lessons at Hutt Valley Rock n Roll club, it was from there that they were encouraged to compete competitively as they were told they were Naturals by the club.

“I am so proud of the group it was such a shock to walk away with the results in hand, especially because the kids were very inexperienced and for a lot of them, it was there first time ever competing in Junior Nationals or any rock n roll competition and I loved seeing them out there giving there all and having fun on the floor,” she says.

Genetic engineering, GMO’s (Genetically modified organisms)is when the DNA has been modified in some way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination.

A controversial subject and one that many of us only have a little bit of understanding of.

Terms such as splicing, shedding, RNA, gene transfer are mentioned and a number of concerns are raised when it comes to GE crops.

Here in NZ there appears to be a large public reluctance to having any of our food chain genetically engineered and grown in NZ. MAF protects our country by ensuring any experimental crops are secure in quarantine like facilities to prevent any shedding to our agriculture crops. (Shedding is as I understand it; is modified gene/s that are absorbed by and can affect other plants or species) That is like coming into near contact with someone that has a disease and you catch it.

The first generation of Monsanto crops followed the pattern. Genes were injected into plants.

Like a vaccine, its purpose was protection; in this case, protection against Monsanto’s own herbicide poison, Roundup.

What was discover was: The overall health of the crops, then the people and animals health was reduced when consuming the crops.

The nutritive value of the crops diminished; super-weeds on the GMO farms flourished.

The Monsanto genes in the plants drifted/shed.

They were found in non-GMO plants, in soil bacteria, and human gut bacteria.

Bit like dandruff, flakes of genes were absorbed by other plants (in this case weeds) and conferred the properties of the GM to the weeds.

So the original money making concept was to make food crops

immune to Roundup so the crops could be sprayed with the herbicide to kill the competing weeds without damaging the crop.

Great idea and they did it without considering the consequences (why consider adverse effects when there is millions of dollars available to be made?)

The crops shed the genetic Roundup resistant material either through direct contact or through the soil to the weeds which became what we now call Super Weeds.

This was the first noticed problem but what are the other problems?

Five sets of ethical concerns have been raised about GM crops: Potential harm to human and animal health, Potential damage to the environment, Negative impact on traditional farming practice, Excessive corporate dominance and the unnaturalness of the technology.

I asked the question of the two Supermarket chains a few years ago about how much GE food did they sell to us?

They stated that they did not knowingly sell any GE food stuffs but had no knowledge of what imported food stuffs may contain that had genetic material from GMO crops incorporated into them.

Crops such as soya and corn in America and elsewhere have a large percentage of their crops that are GE. To illustrate 85% of the worlds cotton crops are genetically modified to be what is termed Roundup Ready so they can be sprayed with Roundup while growing to control weeds.

A study I read some time ago from an University that analyzed every cotton type product available and found most contained Roundup.(This included feminine and medical cotton products: and we wonder now days about cervix cancer?)

I also remember reading about a farmer in the States whom in winter placed cobs of maize out on an old

tree stump for the hungry squirrels to eat.

He would watch them from his kitchen window filling their tummies and taking some kernels away for snacks later.

One day he thought what if I put out some GMO cobs what would happen.

He obtained some GE corn and waited for a couple of days not feeding the squirrels to ensure they were hungry.

Then he placed a couple of the GE cobs on the stump and went back home to watch.

The squirrels soon came and they sniffed the cobs, looked at them but would not eat them.

Next day the untouched cobs sat there are the squirrels starved. They must have thought better to starve to death than eat something they recognised as dangerous.

Here is an interesting thought; Many critics of GMO crops fail to realize (or are afraid to criticize) the possible dangers of a GMO vaccine.

There was one trial done sometime ago (Nov 2007 )using ferrets that I read about and the ferrets all had adverse side effects such as inflammation and hepatitis.

Here is an interesting aspect : we have found out and know that GE plants shed their new GMO’s onto non modified plants and weeds giving the other plants the same or similar properties as the modified ones.

Could the same apply to humans, animals and other life forms?

Positive and adverse effects could be shed through contact?

Apparently from what I have read this will happen.

When you play with fire you can get burnt when you play with genetic engineering you do not know the repercussions.

NRL do their players no favours as sin-bins soar The NRL needs to tread carefully when it comes to their new tough stance on contact to the head during tackles.

Speculation is the NRO top brass are concerned they will be hit with a concussion lawsuit if the status quo remains.

However, the past fortnight, where players have been sinbinned or sent off for contact to

the head, has made some of the contests non competitive.

The science behind the move and the devetatiing long-term effects of concussions can’t be ignored but for a long time, the NRL and die-hard rugby league fans have held onto the extra physicality like a badge of honour.

I’ve often said over the years, that I felt it was impossible to be sent

off in NRL. The latest move is going a step too far for 2021.

The NRL is asking their players to alter their tackle techniques mid-season which is a tough and unfair ask.

Head knocks and concussions are nothing new, why the NRL bosses chose two months into the 2021 season to finally take a hard line

on it has yet to be clarified.

Fans should expect more games having teams disadvantaged by sin-bins and that is not what is best for the product.

Rugby’s product is often unwatchable now as referees use TV to hunt for foul play.

The NRL’s success as a product is their speed of play and simple

rules.

Players will take time to adjust to this new stance.

They will now have to aim lower to limit the risk of mistiming or miscalculating a hit.

It is bound to annoy the bluecollar fans.

For player health long-term, it is a good move, but how it’s been done, leaves a lot to be desired.

Central vs Wellington Olympic

With the Wellington Phoenix returning home to play in town for the first time in 433 days, Capital Football rescheduled all of the games to earlier kick offs to allow everyone to attend.

Our Central League side travelled over the hill to play against Wellington Olympic and after a positive first half which ended 0-0, the lads were unable to carry on that momentum and ended up walking away empty handed as they lost 4-0.

Our Reserves faced Marist at Kilbirnie Park and they failed to carry on the momentum and put away there chances as they succumbed to their second defeat of the season losing 2-0.

Halfbaked put on a show in a very exciting game. 2-2 at half time thanks to a Cam Blake double, the lads stole it late on through Callum Waugh to win 3-2. While down at Richard Prouse it was a local derby between Wainuiomata Fiddick’s and Wainuiomata Roundballs.

Despite a gutsy effort from the Roundballs and a Josh Castle goal, the Fiddick’s bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to win 6-1.

On to the Masters grade and in what seems to be a regular occurrence, the Undertakers were involved in another high scoring game. 7 goals in total but unfortunately the lads walked away empty handed and had nothing to show for their efforts. Pacifica suffered a heavy defeat away to Island Bay while the Pacifica Originals were able to beat top of the table and undefeated Eastbourne.

Richard Armstrong scored his second goal of the season in what was described as 30 yard screamer but it wasn’t enough to help the OC’s as they went down to Tawa.

On Sunday, it was double delight in the 2 games played. The Under 17’s found their form after backto-back losses to win 8-0 against Naenae. In the Women’s game, it was a birthday treat for Heather Smith as she grabbed a double in their 3-2 win against Tawa AFC. Central League: Wainuiomata

Battle lines drawn It is a rivalry set to be reignited on Queen’s Birthday weekend in the now classic form of kiwiana – the old boys rugby game. The fixture will also kick start game day of Wainuiomata Rugby Club’s 75th Jubilee celebrations.

Most readers will remember a time when the valley needed two high schools. Wainuiomata College opened in 1963. After a population surge, Parkway College opened its doors in 1972. A local rivalry was born.

The battle line was drawn from the primary school a pupil attended. From “new Wainui” in Sun Valley and Parkway through Fernlea and down to the village schools of Wainuiomata and Wood Hatton – the blue line of

Parkway. The rest were the green of big brother based at Moohan Street.

For 30 years the colleges battled on all sports fields and courts until 2002, when the schools merged due to dwindling rolls. The rivalry was no more fiercely evident than the annual 1st XV derby game.

Over the years the schools have produced some household names nationally and internationally including local rugby league legends the Lomax brothers, Manu Samoa prop Justin Va’a, coach Moana Jackson in the green corner; and All Blacks Neemia Tialata, Piri Weepu and the valley’s greatest sports product, All Blacks legend Tana Umaga in the blue.
