He says the redevelopment of eight classrooms as well as a library and school hall will modernise the learning experience and ensure the school has a bright future.

“The new building gives us greater flexibility with how we can work with our students and it’s been designed under innovative learning requirements from the Ministry of Education and we can see huge changes in how teachers interact with students in the three weeks we’ve been in there.”

The eight original classrooms from the 1970s have been replaced with 10 modern learning areas.

“It’s taken nine years to get to this point so it’s great.

“Stage one is the new building and library and phase two, which is starting now, is the hall which is exciting because we’ve never had a school hall before,” Jeremy says.

“We’ve had other schools come and look at what we have and they’ve said that this is how schools should look.

As for retirement, Jeremy says that was a decision he had made 18 months ago.

“Winston (Peters) gave me his gold card last year and I would have loved to have seen the whole project through but our new principal will do that.

“The pace of change is getting rapid and I was concerned about whether I could keep up.

“The decision felt right at the time and it certainly feels right now.”

Jeremy says nothing could have prepared him for the challenges of 2020.

“Our theme for the year was change and changes have come thick and fast.

“It’s probably been the most challenging year I’ve had but also there’s been moments of a big adrenaline rush and the year has tested everybody.”

Jeremy says the role has meant every day has been different.

“I love seeing the decisions we make and the impact it has on a child’s learning.

“I also love it when the fiveyear-olds come to me with a book they’d like me to read to them.

“When you see them go from nothing to fluent readers, it’s really pleasing.

“Equally I’m always learning in this role and it is one of the best bits about being a principal here.”

Tunnel alternative proposed by KRA The Karori Residents Association has come up with a comprehensive proposal that would see greater access for around 18,000 Karori residents plus Karori businesses and public transport of all types, as well as at least seven thousand more western suburbs residents.

Karori development – residential and commercial – has been plagued by severely restricted transport access according to proposal writer, retired civil engineer and Karori resident Bill Guest.

“For many years, Karori was, and may still well be, the biggest single suburb by population in Wellington City,” Mr Guest says.

“With proposed new suburban development plans and plenty of available developable land, Karori is likely to be an area of significant further growth.

“However, Karori is already at a tipping point, and further growth without addressing our transport bottlenecks will make us all worse off.

“Our proposal solves these transport problems and unlocks economic benefits in the short and long term.

“It is centred on a new 350m

long tunnel alternative with a reasonable gradient that starts further north on Chaytor St than the current tunnel and connects to The Rigi beside Glenmore Street.

“It solves the problems of access for double decker bus public transport and similar restrictions on goods vehicles. It also solves other significant issues associated with re- designing the existing tunnel or previous other tunnel options that were investigated going back more than 60 years.

“Right now, both the suburb’s residents and wider catchments of Makara, Creswick Valley, Northland, Wilton and Otari are captive to a now hopelessly inadequate tunnel that effectively throttles residential and commercial transport of all types, particularly at peak hour,” he says.

“Traffic jams occur either side of the current tunnel and the flow-on impacts Kelburn, Aro Valley, Northland, Thorndon and beyond.

“It directly stifles public transport such as double-decker buses and is dangerous to ordinary buses, commercial trucks and vans, cycle traffic, pedestrian traffic and private vehicles. The tunnel in its current form is well

Round two for pop-up plant sale

Twinkle Toes the rooster helping Feathers & Flora manager, Laura Fraser prepare the plants for the sale. Twinkle Toes was born with a birth defect which means he can only walk on his toes.

Buoyed by the success of their last pop-up plant sale in August, Feathers & Flora plant nursery are now proud to invite you to their premises in Ohariu Valley for their `Welcome to Summer Pop-up Plant Sale’ taking place on Sunday December 6.

Feathers & Flora nursery manager, Laura Fraser, said “This time we have extended our selection to include natives, non-native, herbs and vegetables, ornamental shrubs, fuchsias, apple trees and feijoa trees.

In total their will be a total of around 100 varieties to choose from.

Feathers & Flora has been operating as an online service delivering plants direct to the customers’ gardens throughout the Wellington region since 2018. It shares the same premise as the Wellington Bird Re-

habilitation Trust and was founded on the vision that the proceeds from the plant sales would create an ongoing source of financial sustainability for the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust.

“This year, we are tracking to take in and care for our biggest intake of sick, orphaned, and injured birds ever, which will be over 1000.

Generally, these birds are brought to us by the public - many of which have then become part of our team of amazing volunteers at the trust or in the Feathers & Flora nursery” - Craig Shepherd, WBRT founder and trustee.

On Sunday 6th December, people will have the unique opportunity to handpick the plants from the nursery whilst gaining an appreciation and

awareness of what the Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust does.

Just like the last pop-up plant sale, there will be horticulturists available to assist you with your planting enquires and Eftpos will be available.

Bring the kids, as it will be familyfriendly affair complete with a kids’ activity zone, onsite food and coffee options, and a few of the feathered residents from the trust will be wandering around ready to share their rescue and rehab stories with you. Circa brings golden entertainment

Hens’ Teeth is delighted to present at Circa, a highly-entertaining theatrical season showcasing the remarkable talents of Coral Trimmer (harmonica virtuoso), Sunny Amey (comedian), Dame Kate Harcourt (actor). In common they have talent, skill and age – they are all over 90.

Kate Jason Smith, the brains behind Hens’ Teeth, was inspired by Coral’s outstanding harmonica performance at her younger brother Sir Jon Trimmer’s 80th birthday.

At the same event Sunny burst on to the comedy scene with her take on getting older.

By putting Dame Kate into the mix, she realised she had a show on her hands! Looking round Kate found there was a pool of talented Gold Card performers still in the business and managed to secure a fabulous collection to complete the line-up for The Older the Better.

Karori Normal School youngsters lap-up the funds

New entrants at Karori Normal School have completed 2002 combined laps of Ben Burn Park in an effort to raise funds for Wellington Children’s Hospital.

More than 120 five and six-yearolds supported by parents and grandparents racked-up the laps on Monday, inspired by British centurion Sir Tom Moore who completed 100 laps to raise money for the NHS in April.

Teacher Lisa Hadfield says many of the kids had only been at the school for three weeks when the first lockdown happened and the idea was sparked.

“We had one boy, Reuben Stokes, who was obsessed with Captain Tom

and chatting about his every move at the time.

“At the end of last term we were all still talking about the good he did for the NHS. “We felt the Wellington Children’s Hospital was a good cause with many of our families using their facilities.

“We just considered it our little event, like a sports event and we had parents and grandparents helping out.”

The effort has so far raised more than $3700 for the cause, well beyond the modest $1000 goal initially.

“The best events are always the ones lead by the children,” Lisa says.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a worksite in Takarau Gorge Road was burgled. The area is fenced off but not secure. A toolbox lock was smashed but no tools were stolen. Attempts were made to steal the battery from an eight ton excavator which were not successful. No items were stolen.

In Newlands a burnt out house under reconstruction in Evesham Place was entered via a back bedroom window. Asbestos is being removed from the ceilings and the intruders broke through the contamination barrier to steal a power saw, a radio and batteries. A green Honda Stream stationwagon, parked in Ruskin Road overnight, was stolen. It was recovered by Police in a damaged state. A window had been smashed and the ignition had been pulled out. In Pinkerton Grove a

monitor was stolen from outside the front door. The victim was aware that the monitor had arrived as he could see it through the glass front door but it was not convenient to take it in until an hour later, by which time it had gone. This time of year in particular it is important to bring delivered goods inside to avoid disappointment.

In Ngaio a green Toyota Hilux stationwagon parked in Awarua Street was stolen.

In Churton Park a house under construction in Atherton Terrace was entered through two broken windows at the rear of the house.

Electrical fittings and carpet laying equipment were stolen.

In Grenada Village a silver Holden Commodore saloon was damaged. It was parked in Mark Avenue and a neighbour alerted the

owner to the damage. The passenger window has been smashed and a GPS unit stolen.

In Broadmeadows a green Toyota hatchback, parked in Nalanda Crescent unlocked, was seen by a neighbour being rummage searched by a man he did not know. He was given a lame excuse by the man but took the precaution of noting down the registration number of the car the man arrived in. This was passed to the Police.

In Crofton Downs a white Dodge Nitro stationwagon parked in Churchill Drive was broken into. A wallet and some tools were taken.

In Karori a white Mazda demio saloon parked in Percy Dyett Drive was broken into by smashing a rear quarterlight window. Sunglasses were stolen. In Standen Street a silver crusader trailer was stolen, it was locked with a chain and padlock.

The thieves took them away with them.

A grey Mazda cx-3 stationwagon parked overnight in Sunshine Avenue was broken into. It was found with the left rear door and the bonnet open. A blue Suzuki Swift

Hatchback, parked at the corner of Seaforth Terrace and Whitehead Road was found next morning jacked up and a wheel missing.

The offenders had removed both front and rear passenger wheel. They replaced the front wheel with another which had a very bald tyre. A grey Mazda Demio hatchback parked in Sunshine Avenue was stolen. It was later found down a steep bank where it had been abandoned.

In Wilton bolt cutters were used to cut through the chain and padlock securing a trailer. The trailer was a tilt tray model and was stolen from Cecil Road. In Warwick Street an attempt was made to jemmy open a door and when this failed a window was broken to gain entry, A watch and an item of jewellery was stolen. A house in Mairangi Road was broken into and as set of house keys stolen.

In Northland a blue Suzuki scooter was stolen form it’s park in Northland Road.

The machine had been secured to a pole by a chain and padlock. Bolt cutters were used to free the bike.

Blue Dragon Book Fair sets new record

were more people than usual on Saturday and a steady stream on Sunday morning too.

She thanked all those people who came and supported the weekend which was postponed twice due to Coronavirus.

This money will go a long way to help children in Vietnam.

Very Welly Christmas all set It’s going to be A Very Welly Christmas this weekend The annual A Very Welly Christmas event will take over the CBD for two days of whanau friendly fun and festivities – and everyone’s invited.

It’s been a challenging year, but the next few months will see events and activities energising, entertaining and engaging the city, its people, and its economy – and A Very Welly Christmas kicks it all off this weekend.

For two days along Lambton Quay and some surrounding streets, there’ll be an ice rink, foam cannon, face painting, food trucks, kiddie crafts, carols, performers and of course Santa will make an appearance – and be welcoming visitors to his grotto.

The Christmas spirit will be alive and kicking with this event, and the exciting new Love Local initiative launched last week says Mayor Andy Foster.

“A Very Welly Christmas is a popular and long established event on the capital’s calendar, and all the usual crowd pleaser activities and performers will be back for all to enjoy – with some new treats to make the festivities even more vibrant, accessible,

and unique.

“We encourage everyone to head to the event by public transport, by foot or bike, and for those who need to drive there’s also two-free hours parking over the weekend available in Clifton Car Park as part of our Love Local campaign.”

A Very Welly Christmas runs from midday on both Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November. Road closures will apply along Lambton Quay, plus Balance, Stout, Waring Taylor, Johnson and Brandon Streets from midnight Friday 27 November to midnight Sunday 29 November.

After the days’ festivities wind down on Saturday, the carols start from 5-7pm at Midland Park, so grab a blanket and some kai, and get ready to falalalala into the evening.

But there are many things worth repairing – Shoes can be resoled cheaply, cordless vacuums commonly just need a new battery, power / garden tools may just need a service & repairing good clothes isn’t actually that expensive – Worth a thought!

5. Bulk Recycling – If you have collected up a lot of recycling over the years, you can take it all to your local recycling centre and drop it all off for free. These are commonly located next to landfills in Wellington. It is a great place to drop off that 80” TV Box you got at boxing day or if you are STILL recycling all those beer bottles from Lockdown.

Once you have reached your desired distance from being labelled a hoarder – let’s keep it that way! Buy less things, get quality manufacturing, avoid single-use plastic and be as paper-less as possible.

Colour for St Brigid’s In a bid to raise funds for a new playground Johnsonville St Brigid's School students and teachers ran the gauntlet of a fun run with powdered paint stations covering them in an array of colours.

Chairperson of the St Brigid’s fundraising committee Tracy Robins says the event was all in aid of raising money to pay for a soft ground covering for the play area.

“It is going to be a fitness playground. A long strip with different obstacles for exercise,” she says.

In any other year the school would have held

a fair to raise the funds but this year has been different and the fun-run was a way of make up for the lost opportunity.

“We normally do a fair to fund-raise but because of Covid we couldn't this year but we will be doing other events,” Tracy says.

“We sent home a form and the students collected sponsors for completing the run. It is a bit of fun with them running through the colour stations and raising money for the school at the same time and it has been such a tough year.

This is some fun for the kids and we have ice blocks and some awesome prizes for them.”

WelTec graduates prove wahine can pick up tools and build Construction has been traditionally a male-dominated industry, but WelTec graduates are doing their part to strike a gender balance in the trades, proving wahine have plenty of opportunity to help New Zealand build (literally!) back better post-Covid.

According to an announcement made by the Minister for Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, in November - female apprentices have more than doubled in a year, increasing from 845 to 1785 across all sectors.

WelTec graduates Keijahan Ranginui and Milika Mocevakaca are part of this growing wave.

Keijahan completed her WelTec Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) Carpentry course the week before lockdown in March, so when restrictions were lifted she was raring to pick up her tools and get back to work.

She took a position as an apprentice in an all-wahine team, focusing on building residential houses in the Wellington area.

“I was really excited to start work at Yellowhammer after we were all stuck at home during lockdown,” says Keijehan. “My boss was looking for apprentices for her all-female team, and I thought that sounded like a really

good environment for me to work and learn - so I jumped at the chance.”

After finishing school Keijahan’s parents encouraged her to study a trade through WelTec in hopes that the hands-on study would appeal to her practical nature.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after college but Mum did a bunch of research and asked what I thought of construction.

She also found that I was eligible for the Maori and Pasifika Trades Training scholarship (MPTTS) which was a huge help through my studies,” says Keijahan.

The MPTTS scholarship is as much about covering the costs of study as it is about supporting students to be the best they can be.

Hinemoa Priest, Kaiwhakahaere Maori, and Manager of the Tamaiti Whangai team which supports the MPTTS programme at both WelTec and Whitireia explains: “The team helps our learners with all manner of things - from getting a driver’s licence, sourcing equipment for their hands-on learning, and providing wrap around pastoral, cultural, and wellbeing support - and ultimately and most importantly - we

assist them into work through our employer networks.”

Milika Mocevakaca who also graduated from WelTec at the same time as Keijahan, was thrilled to receive a job offer from Do Builders.

“I am the first female apprentice employed at Do Builders in an all male team,” says Milika. “I have always felt more comfortable around guys so it doesn’t bother me at all. I really like that the team treats me the same as everyone else because it makes me work harder and learn faster.”

“The MPTTS staff were amazing, they really made it their business to help you,” says Milika. “They would come to us, and make sure everything was going well with our studies and life outside of WelTec. They also helped me find my job which I honestly don’t think I would have got so quickly if it weren’t for them and I am so grateful.”

“To any wahine thinking of getting into the trades - I would say just go for it,” says Keijahan. “It is so rewarding when you see you have actually built something, and you learn skills you can use throughout your life - you and your tool box can build just about anything!”

GARDENING THIS WEEK Problems with tomatoes?: By Wally Richards It is a sad state of affairs when gardener’s second most favourite plant can’t be grown any more. It’s not so much that they can’t be grown; it is because they get to a reasonable height with fruit on, then the plants die in front of your eyes, no matter what you do. I get phone calls from gardeners wanting potassium permanganate or Terracin to sterilise the soil to overcome the problem.

It is good that they call because I can then find out what is actually happening, analyse the problem and then once I have pin-pointed the cause we can provide a remedy. To give a diagnosis I first ask are you growing potatoes and if you are how are they?

Many gardeners don’t grow potatoes because they do not have the space to do so, but if they do I need to know at harvest time whether they have potatoes about the size of marbles? If the potatoes are of a good size do they have dark rings inside them when cut open and taste funny? Also what date they plant and harvest?

That helps greatly to determine what is wrong with their tomatoes as they are both of the same family and similar pests and diseases can affect both crops.That is one of the reasons why it is best not to grow tomatoes and potatoes near each other. If it is only tomatoes they grow, I ask if the following happens: You plant your seedlings and they grow well enough and likely reach a height of over a metre, flower and set some fruit. Then the plants start going backwards with

older leaves going funny; drying and falling off. This progresses up the plant so only the upper leaves are looking ok for a while.

Then a fungi growth starts appearing on the trunk and our tomatoes’ days are numbered. Another season with no tomatoes.The cause is progressive as in the first season when it starts you will not likely notice a problem other than the early fruit are likely to be larger than the later fruit and the plants may finish earlier than expected. The following year it gets worse and with another year or two no ripe tomatoes anymore.

You can use Neem Granules/powder, spray with Super Neem Oil, spray all sorts of chemical insecticides and in the early times those things will help but once the problem builds over a season or two then you are pushing the proverbial up hill. Several years ago (about 10years ago) was when I first found a problem and that was with a crop of potatoes I planted around Labour weekend and when I harvested them a few months later I had potatoes about the size of marbles and they were re-shooting. I thought I had put too much nitrogen into the soil so my fault. Tomatoes were not as good as previously so I thought that was likely the weather.

I moved to a new property and took the problem with me on container plants I had growing. The new location was a micro-climate because of the commercial buildings and the problems escalated. By then I had learnt

what was causing the problem and that was psyllids. Once you do see them on the plant there can be hundreds even thousands of the pests feeding and injecting a toxin into the plant which is the main cause of the plant’s problems.

But we have the solution and that is to make the cells of the host plant so tough that the nymphs that have weak feeding mouths cannot pierce the plant to feed. This means they will die within a few hours of hatching which breaks the life cycle. It takes three products to do this strengthening of the tomato plant/potato/tamarillo, which are sold as a kit to start with.

A silicon and boron soil drench applied either prior to planting, at planting time or to existing young plants already planted and again two weeks later. A spray comprised of the Silicon Cell Strengthening spray with the Silicon Super Spreader added (at only 1mil to 5 litres of spray) which drives the other product into the plant. You need to start when fist planting your tomatoes as I don’t think it will work so well on a well-established plant.

DIARRHOEA AND VOMITING Diarrhoea and vomiting are not diseases themselves but are symptoms that can have many possible causes.

When either diarrhoea or vomiting occurs then the body can lose a lot of fluid and become dehydrated. It is very important to get fluid replacement and become rehydrated again.

There are a number of different reasons for diarrhoea and vomiting to occur.

One very common cause is a gut infection (‘gastro’) from either viruses (e.g.: noravirus), bacteria (e.g.: salmonella), or parasites (e.g.: giardia) from contaminated food or water.

Leaving food out of the fridge, possibly, is a common cause for food going ‘off’ due to contamination. In many cases, the ‘gastro’ is only a short-term inconvenience and the diarrhoea and vomiting tend to go away within a few days.

However if the symptoms go on for longer, then a visit to the doctor is advisable. Vomiting and diarrhoea causes the loss of body fluids and important electrolytes (salts), and if it goes on for a longer period of time can result in dehydration.

Babies and children should be given a teaspoon of fluid every minute and adults should take a quarter of a cup every 15 minutes. It is best to avoid undiluted sugary drinks as their high sugar content can make diarrhoea worse.

Light foods such as dry biscuits, cooked mashed vegetables (e.g. plain potato) dry white toast, boiled rice and clear soup are suggested if hungry and then slowly get back to eating normal meals.

For a few days avoid raw vegetables and fruit, wholemeal bread, fried or spicy food and milk products such as cheese and yoghurt.

Here are some simple food handling and cooking tips, and general hygiene measures to help prevent getting a ‘gastro’ bug or passing it on to others.

Wash hands in hot soapy water and dry them well after going to the toilet, after changing babies’ nappies, and before touching food and preparing meals; have clean utensils and chopping boards; defrost meats thoroughly in the fridge and not out on the bench; keep raw foods in the fridge separated from cooked and ready-to-eat foods; refrigerate all foods until

ready to use; use chilly bins with frozen pads inside to keep food cool, and keep them out of the sun; cook meats, especially chicken and other poultry, until the juices run clear and the flesh is no longer pink; cover hot food while cooling, and leave it to cool no longer than 30 minutes before putting in the refrigerator; reheat leftovers until they are steaming hot and only reheat once.

The best treatment for ‘gastro’ symptoms is drinking plenty of fluids such as oral rehydration solutions. These contain the right amounts of electrolytes, glucose and water to replace lost nutrients.

“A range of replacement fluids products are available from our pharmacies” advise Self Care pharmacists “and we can provide you with a copy of the Diarrhoea and Vomiting fact card that has helpful advice.”

Begin fluid replacement as soon as diarrhoea starts and give small amounts of fluid often as large amounts may not be kept down.

Johnsonville earn first win in premier cricket

Johnsonville secured their first Wellington premier cricket win of the season with a four wicket triumph over Hutt District at the Hutt Recreation Ground.

The win was set up by seamer Dominic McAlister who took five for 17 from his 10 overs.

The performance justified captain Rakitha Weerasundara’s decision to bowl first.

Joh nsonville ch ipped away with regular wickets throughout, eventually dismissing Hutt District for 122.

“The bowling effort was really good, Rakitha says.

“It was a good toss to win and the guys were able to show what they can do when they don’t have scoreboard pressure.

“Dominic bowled really well and deserves all the credit but all the bowlers did their job.

“We bowled full and straight which helped in the conditions.

The run-chase was anything but smooth sailing as the batting wobbles continued for Johnsonville.

They were 33 for four in the run chase before a 76-run fifth wicket stand between Jeremy Benton and Gareth Severin steadied the ship.

Jeremy was unbeaten on 40 off 92 to seal the game.

“That was an important partnership,” Rakitha says.

The future of bowls was on display at Johnsonville on Tuesday with the Year 9 and 10 junior tournament.

There were 16 junior college students who took part from Aotea, Naenae, Rongotai, St Pat’s Silverstream and Tawa Colleges.

The event was won by Jayden Burns of Naenae College with James MacMillian , also

from Naenae College in second; and third was Jesse Kibblewhite from Aotea College.

All three players won all five of their matches throughout the day with Jayden having superior shot differential to earn the title.

Bowls Wellington’s Nigel Dixon says the standard of play was high throughout the day and the need is now for the organisation to offer these young players a pathway in the sport.
