This is in celebration of WOW, World of Wearable Arts, to commemorate the Women’s Suffrage Petition. and mark Suffrage Day on September 19.

Emma’s design represents a contemporary woman clothed in the symbols of the past using domestic sewing patterns.

These symbolise petition pages covered with signatures copied from the original petition.

Emma says: “These suffragettes really did have to fight for the right to vote.

“They fought against and

They were, she says, incredibly strong, travelling for miles on horseback in restrictive dresses to gather thousands of signatures.

After weeks of dedicated practice, mind-bending exercises and a few tense moments, a team of seven Crofton Downs Primary School students are heading to Tasmania to compete in the international competition Tournament of Minds.

The year 5 and 6 students will represent New Zealand in the primary division of the Language and Literature Challenge in Hobart on October 26.

They will be testing their problem-solving, creativity and performance skills against counterparts from Australia, Asia, and as far away as Egypt.

The honour was won after competiition in the regional and national finals in August and September.

The aim is to develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.

Solitary Wellington measles case

A Wellington High School student was diagnosed with the measles on Monday September 16, the first Wellington case during the recent outbreak.

Measles is highly infectious and leads to complications in 30 percent of people who contract it, says the Ministry of Health (MOH) website.

Complications include pneumonia, diarrhoea and seizures.

Pregnant women who catch it are also at risk of miscarriage and premature labour.

says the best protection is the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine, which is highly successful and low risk.

If you are not sure you have been immunised, check at your medical centre. If not, then go get the vaccine, adds Rob. “Getting everyone vaccinated is how we protect the population and those who are unable to get vaccinated,” he says.

The MOH website explains measles needs herd immunisation with its high infection rate.

It suggests 95 percent of the population should be immunised to stop transmission and recurring outbreaks.

Rob says that people who think they have measles, or have been in contact with someone who has, should get in contact with their local medical centre before arrival.

“We want to see them and treat them while still protecting our other patients,” says Rob. The centre’s measles scare was over a month ago and they used that protocol, he adds.

“They booked an appointment and we came out to their car so if it was the measles, our other patients would not be at risk.”

When asked, Rob said he is not sure why there is such a large outbreak up north and not

in Wellington.

Measles first symptoms include high fevers, cough, runny nose and sore eyes.

A blotchy red rash usually develops between days three and seven. It tends to appear behind the ears first but can start anywhere.

The Ministry of Health warns that those with measles will be infectious for five days before the rash appears and five days after.

The current outbreak of measles should not be confused with rubella, which is milder though can cause birth defects in pregnant women.

Huge Climate Strike forecast Tony Huang, Onslow College student and a national spokesperson for SS4C (School Students for Climate Change NZ) is saying they will not back down from demanding climate justice from the Government.

“We will continue to make our voices heard until all of our demands are met. The cost of inaction is far too high when our lives are at stake, cultures and homelands are at stake,” he says.

He is one of the leaders of the third Strike 4 Climate, to occur in 30 New Zealand cities and towns on Friday, September 27.

Tony says it will be the biggest yet.

“This time, we are calling on adults to join us, as the climate crisis threatens everything we love and everyone’s collective home,” he says.

School student strikes on March 15 and May 24 mobilised over 38,000 students altogether.

Now they are putting the call out to adults and, says Tony, it is highly likely that Friday will see the biggest-ever climate strike mobilisation.

Major union organisations

supporting the students include the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, the PSA, First Union and the NZ Union of Students’ Associations, along with some private companies, he says.

The students are taking the following demands to the Beehive on Friday.

“That our Government and Governments around the world do everything in their power to limit warming to 1.5 degrees to safeguard our right to a future on Earth.

“That the Government acknowledges the magnitude of the climate crisis by declaring a climate emergency.

“That all parties in Parliament support passing an ambitious Zero Carbon Act into law that puts in place a legally enforceable plan to get to net zero carbon by 2040.”

They are also demanding that the Government ceases all exploration and extraction of fossil fuels and that they invests in building a renewable and regenerative economy now, along with honouring its responsibility to Pacific Island nations.

It will draw on lessons learned from other businesses around the country, including those affected by the Canterbury earthquakes.

Emergency meetings in Karori On Tuesday October 1, Karori residents are being invited to a Wellington Regional Emergency Management Organisation (WREMO) meeting at the community centre in Beauchamp Street. It will be held between 5.30 and 7pm.

BBQ and drinks will be provided and you will be able to see how the emergency hub will look after a disaster, with the emergency water tank up and running. You can fill a bottle and learn how it works.

Then, on Wednesday October 23, another WREMO meeting will be held at the centre, this one later, between 7-8.30pm.

Once again, entry is free and residents are invited to find out how to prepare for Wellington’s specific hazards, and to contribute to the area’s emergency plan.

WHY PAY KENNEL OR CATTERY FEES?

Sally Rimkeit’s job title is a mouthful.

A psychogeriatrician, she works and researches the mental health of the elderly, her particular interest being dementia care.

Originally from Oregon, she found herself in Johnsonville in 1988 but decided on a major career change which meant leaving here in 1994.

By then on her own with two young children, she moved to Dunedin to study medicine.

Once qualified, Sally’s career finally brought her back to Wellington and much of her work closely mirrors the Independent Herald’s circulation area. “Johnsonville, Newlands, Northland, Karori …”

She says she was raised to “really, really respect older people”.

That’s shaped her practice and research as she aims for better quality of life for those living with dementia, better supporting their families and carers and removing the stigma.

Sally says it’s her passion. You can tell.

Knowing the disease can’t be reversed or cured means it is

normal for real grief to follow a diagnosis.

Particularly distressing, for both person and whanau, is the uncommon pre-65 youngeronset dementia, when people can be at their career peak, or bringing up families.

Sally has a real interest in this, and led the establishment of the Younger Onset Dementia Aotearoa Trust (YODAT) which now runs a twice-weekly day programme in Wellington.

Another keen interest is her research on reading and dementia, done with linguist and reading expert Gill Claridge.

A Lotteries and Bupa Care grant has supported their international study on possible benefits that care home residents may gain from joining a reading group.

It’s also brought them to create a publishing company Dovetale Press.

They have already produced five dementia-friendly books, superbly-illustrated classics, including Katherine Mansfield and the Sherlock Holmes books.

Sally says an important goal is a dementia-friendly reading group in every library, where participants can enjoy a favour-

A Kickstarter campaign, launching on October 1, hopes to fuel this project.

After the 7.30pm performance on Saturday evening, a panel of experts from Brain Research New Zealand, and members of the cast, will be available for a question and answer session.

Anti-litter ladies on the beat

“So on September 8, I posted on Neighbourly asking neighbours if it was okay to put the litter that I have picked up near their homes into their half-full rubbish bags or bins when they’re out on the street for collection,” says Lorraine.

“Disappointingly, I only received a couple of positive replies.

“And one man was quite abusive, accusing us of stealing his rubbish bag!”

That made them more cautious of using bins and bags on the street.

And things came to a head one day last week, when Annie and a friend Ele Brown picked up four huge bags of rubbish.

Lorraine then rang the council to see if they could chip in a few rubbish bags.

They could.

“WCC’s Transport and Infrastructure division have supplied us with bags and gloves and also a health and safety information pack.”

And Lorraine and Annie are delighted that Parks and Reserves have also come on board because they have Kanpur Park and Mt Kaukau off Sirsi Terrace under their jurisdiction.

Now the two women have decided that they will pick up litter on Monday afternoons after the rubbish and recycling trucks have been through.

“That’s when the wind has blown over bins and rubbish is scattered everywhere,” says Lorraine.

They are also hoping that the community will realise the extent of the problem and mobilise to pick up rubbish from their bushes, berms and gutters.

I am often asked what being a progressive government means.

It means being the government that is prepared to take on the often long term issues which need fixing, even if politically risky. And this is certainly a progressive government. We are cleaning up our waterways, getting some order into the firearms regime, addressing housing and transport issues, and doing work to reduce inequality so those born disadvantaged get the opportunity to become fully functioning and participating me members of our society.

While doing that, we do of course need to keep the economy in good shape so it’s good to see that even though the world economy is struggling, New Zealand is batting above its weight as we do in so many things and our GDP growth is ahead of Australia, Canada and many other countries we compare ourselves to.

And of course our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is in New York as I write this, ensuring the New Zealand star is shining brightly in the world stage, leading the discussions on social media reform and was keynote speaker at the Climate Action Summit hosted by the UN Secretary-General.

Locally, students from Onslow College in particular have been leading the way on climate strike and voting age issues, evidence that many of our young people are far more politically engaged than many think.

The announcement to make the teaching of New Zealand history in schools compulsory is, I believe, an excellent one to help us all understand how we formed as a nation and what makes us unique.

And also, understand why we are the progressive nation we are and why we have in the past led the world in things like voting for all, our nuclear free stance, our open economy, and now our actions on cleaning up waterways and the environment, all things opposed by the National Opposition at the time.

We will continue to be criticised for everything we do by the opposition, but I have faith New Zealanders understand that those blindly opposing everything, are consigning us to more of the same stuff, which will be badly failing the next generation.

Zealandia’s milestones marked in new book

His idea was for a predator-fenced eco-sanctuary in the middle of Wellington, tuning city people into nature and bringing rare birds back to the valley he discovered during a biological survey of Wellington in 1990.

The result is Zealandia.

Jim, now the sanctuary’s foundervice-patron, this week launched his book Zealandia, the valley that changed a nation.

It’s about the 30-year journey to create a sanctuary, recently selected

by Time magazine as one of the 100 greatest places in the world to visit.

The valley is now full of native species and birds are spilling out into the city. But it has also become a place for people.

“Since 2000, over 100,000 kids have been through,” Jim says.

“Plus hundreds of researchers and almost a million and a half visitors.

Then there are over 10,000 members and donors, and 600 volunteers.”

It’s now paying its own way, a rare achievement for any conservation enterprise.

Some 120 guests turned up at Zealandia on Tuesday September 24 for the launch of his book which marks three major milestones: twenty five years since the sanctuary trust was formed in 1995, 30 years since his Natural Wellington report was adopted by the City Council in 1990 and the twentieth anniversary of the vital predator-proof fence, erected in 1999.

That fence, the key to almost everything, was a national first Jim says, taking four years to design.

Since then it has been widely copied.

To get Zealandia to this point was, he adds, a journey full of excitement and fear “in equal parts” involving hundreds of dedicated Wellingtonians, and rigorous planning and feasibility studies The result, Jim describes, as “a dream come true”.

He and his wife Eve retired to Waikanae ten years ago but Zealandia, and Karori where they lived for 35 years, remain very close to their hearts.

Annemarie Jutel isn’t Karori born and bred, but she loves her home suburb.

Mountain biking on the Makara tracks is just one opportunity for the physical activity that is part of her life and and an active lifestyle means she has no worries about the No 2 bus.

Annemarie – Professor Jutel, researcher, teacher, mother and grandmother – is a former elite athlete who daily bikes to and from the Victoria University’s School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Practitioners at Wellington Hospital.

US-born, Annemarie’s nurs-

ing career saw her working in Dunedin’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after she and her family moved to New Zealand.

But the athlete in her soul was drawn to the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education.

When based in France, she had run that country’s third fastest marathon ever run by a woman. (And in Dunedin, she became Otago’s long distance road running champion) She says she walked into the school expecting to become a scientist or physiologist.

“But we had a broad liberal education and I came out as a sociologist instead.”

Annemarie ended up teaching at Victoria University in their new Faculty of Health. Her research sees her looking at how the arts can provide very different insights into the roles of science and medicine.

The team Annemarie leads at Victoria includes not only her husband, Thierry, director of

the Victoria Master of Fine Arts programme, but some of our best-known scholars, psychologists, film-makers, musicians and story-tellers.

A resulting day-long event at Te Papa on October 12, is called Mataora: Encounters between Medicine and the Arts which focuses on the mind and wellbeing.

“In Denmark, doctors actually prescribe culture three times a week for people with mental health problems. A cultural prescription!” Annemarie says.

Garden waste in reserves not on Dear Editor This is a positive, polite and proactive response to the article Call for volunteers to team up to clean up (Independent Herald, September 19, p.18).

May I please suggest and encourage nearby Neighbourhood Watch Volunteers to monitor the

Lazy, irresponsible people dumping their garden waste in reserves are just making work for others, e.g. those noble members of KAKA. The fact that some of this garden waste will have seeds compounds the problem of

dumping by inconsiderate people. They`re like Nimbies (Not in my Backyard) with an “out of sight, out of mind” thoughtless attitude!

Members of the public driving by reserves might spot people sneaking near with a suspicious bag of garden waste.

Even just driving slowly past those sly people may make them think twice about avoiding a tip`s green waste fees.

Drivers may consider pulling over and obviously using their mobile phone to contact WCC about these slackers!!

Samoan culture comes to Karori Lotu Tamaiti, the Samoan tradition that honours children, and is now celebrated worldwide, has come to Karori.

St Ninian’s Uniting Church in Karori is running a Lotu Tamaiti school holiday programme and church service next month. Lotu Tamaiti which literally means ‘prayer for children’ is also known as White Sunday and is celebrated on the second Sunday of October.

Dating back to 1920 when an influenza epidemic wiped out a quarter of Samoa’s population with the majority being children, Lotu Tamaiti was established for parents and communities to acknowledge and celebrate childhood.

In Samoa White Sunday or Lotu Tamaiti is a national holiday (the Monday after) and churches host special services and performances throughout the country to remember and celebrate children.

Children receive gifts on White Sunday and are allowed privileges normally reserved for elders, such as being the first to be served food at dinner time.

On White Sunday, Samoan women and children dress completely in white clothing. Some of them trim the clothes with the other two colours of the Samoan flag, red and blue. Men will wear white shirts

Best wishes for Claire Bibby Dear Editor I was interested to read in The Independent Herald (September 5, p.4) that Police Sergeant Claire Bibby is a finalist in the Public Policy category of New Zealand’s Women of Influence Awards, the winner to be announced on October 24.

Her experience policing in the community means she appreciates the strength and bravery of men and women striving to maintain the law and secure peace for everyone.

I have been told it was Claire Bibby who followed up an unpleasant problem my family has had regarding security and police support over many years.

New Zealand should be doing much better.

I’m standing for Wharangi Onslow Western Ward because I want to bring some financial discipline to the Council.

The Council has strayed from its core purpose and we’re paying for it. It keeps dreaming up expenditure wish-lists for pet causes, and then calculating how much it needs to put up your rates bill to fund them. Instead, the Council should be focusing on delivering core services that are affordable.

Based on current ill-disciplined plans and known financial issues, the Council needs to almost double its operating budget over ten years in addition to

completely exhausting its debt capacity.

Rates are rising at three times the rate of inflation and will continue to do so unless someone intervenes. The Council is leaving itself no financial headroom to deal with unexpected issues, like the need to fix the central library.

I currently work in financial management and have the skills and experience to get the Council back on track financially. I want to make sure we have the financial ability to invest in the core purpose of the Council, including transport infrastructure and enabling housing supply.

I support: • Tying rates increases to inflation • Return of free weekend parking in the City • Innovative solutions to grow Wellington’s economy • Enhanced resilience by strengthening communities • Freeing up more land for housing development • Increased support for pest free Wellington 2050 • Free public transport for children during the weekends I oppose: • Shady behind-the-scenes deals between council and private interests • Waste of ratepayers money on nonsense vanity projects

• Infill housing developments • Restrictive and costly consent processes People need assurances about rates which is why I want to tie rates to inflation or freeze them.

Ratepayers expect council to cut their cloth and prioritise like all households.

Foster stronger communities to enhance our resilience. As VP of ORCA (Onslow Residents & Community Association) I will play a leading role in harnessing council’s resources to bring communities together to achieve things we can’t manage individually.

I am strongly opposed to infill housing. Medium and high density housing has a place, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of property values and privacy.

Later, I enrolled in WELTEC Petone and started my certification in Construction Engineering. Since then I have built a few houses in Wellington.

Some eighty people attend the pre-election meeting organised by the Johnsonville Community Association (JCA) for Tuesday evening, in conjunction with the Johnsonville Uniting Church.

Seven candidates for the three Northern Takapu Ward places attended, along with Tracey Hurst-Porter, one of the candidates also vying for the one position on the HuttMana Charitable Trust Board.

Chair Tony Randall and timekeeper Jane Turner presided over an edgier meeting than those for the Western Ward and mayoral seats, though the Te Aro timekeeping solution of a water pistol was, perhaps fortunately, not invoked.

The three sitting councillors, Deputy Mayor Jill Day, Malcolm Sparrow and Peter Gilberd, faced an onslaught from former JCA president Graeme Sawyer, who minced no words about “the gang of four” (including Mayor Justin Lester) who, he said, dominated council.

“Keep party politics out of the Wellington City Council,” is the slogan on his election poster.

He told the meeting that Johnsonville had been poorly served by the current Tawabased councillors. “You need someone from this part of town who knows where the bodies are buried,” he said, pointing to the need to be dogged in promoting the area. He ran out of time, saying as he finished “You could give me an hour on this!”

Later, answering a query about infrastructure and drainage issues, he told Malcom Sparrow and Peter Gilberd that their answers were “rubbish”. WCC planners also felt his ire.

“They don’t follow regulations. They’ll shove any rubbish through. There’s pell mell development utterly beyond the capacity of current infrastructure,” he said.

Graeme was not the only candidate to dismiss the airport runway extension proposal, but his words were particularly blunt: “Extraordinarily insane!”

posing the question of why, over the last five years, some 4000 tonnes of sediment has been deposited in the Porirua Harbour much, though not all, from sub-divisions in Churton Park.

This was clearly news to sitting councillors, with Malcolm Sparrow describing himself as appalled, Jill saying it was “hugely disappointing” and Peter using the words “totally unacceptable”, an issue that would be leading to the destruction of Porirua harbour.

Plenty of entertainment at Ngaio meeting

There was a crowd of 100 plus at the Ngaio election meeting of Friday September 20, with Wharangi Onslow/Western Ward and some mayoral candidates rising to the challenge of a failed sound system in a large hall.

Either the acoustics at Ngaio are truly exceptional or the candidates, by and large, very loud indeed and untroubled by the odd passing train. (They were running.)

Ward candidate Rebecca Matthews scored 11 out of 10 for her unmiked effort (perhaps make that a twelve) followed by incumbent Mayor Justin Lester and mayoral hopeful Norbert Hausberg, both just nines by comparison.

At that stage, with some 34 meetings behind most candidates, no notes were needed During this exercise, mayoral candidate Don McDonald offered rival Andy Foster a lesson in public speaking. Probably unnecessary, though Andy repeated his effort from Wadestown, this time dropping his water glass rather than his mobile

as he juggled papers. Fortunately it wasn’t full and hit the ground without quite the same startling crash as last time.

(Nice to see that the Mayor helped him retrieve it. Peter Gilberd did the same thing in the Johnsonville Bowling Club on Tuesday night, though he was scrupulous in mopping up the results.)

Diane Calvert scored some Brownie points with a spirited attack on the “political shenanigans” involved in the Lets Get Wellington Moving processes, while Simon Woolf received loud applause for his reference to Ngaio-Crofton residents as “Upstanders not bystanders. My community.”

Green candidate Richard McIntosh is likely to stay in memory as living proof that the Mullet is back, while Don McDonald’s green credentials were proven by the fact that he was the only one to leave early to catch a train.

It all proved that attending political meetings need not be a chore. There’s plenty of entertainment. Go along. Then vote - let’s challenge that dire national average of a 47 per cent turn out.

Karori Lions celebrate Karori Lions celebrated their 50th Charter anniversary on the night of Saturday September 14, with a sumptuous dinner at the Karori Bridge Club.

President Joanne Knight reports: “ O ve r 8 0 g u e s t s a t t e n d ed, com i ng f rom as fa r as Auck la nd a nd Aust ra l ia.

“These included two of the original charter members,” she said adding that it was a night of reminiscing about the good times and the club’s many enterprises.

She said the spirit in the room was uplifting as members recounted snippets of history and fun times, celebrated successes and remembered absent friends.

The “Father of the Karori Sanc-

tuary” Jim Lynch QSM was the guest speaker, recounting the early days as the germ of an idea for the sanctuary sparked a revolution in conservation around New Zealand.

Beth Anders, a member of the organising team said Jim thanked the Karori Lions for their early and continuing support of the Zealandia, from fundraising, painting the building for the first offices, working in the weka enclosure and for the intense and sustained effort over some years to eradicate invasive trees and weeds in the upper valley.

Joanne says that the club was delighted to present the prestigious Lions Melvin Jones Fellows

recognitions to five club members who have given huge service to the community, both in their Lions capacity and through other community organisations.

They were Vaughan Crimmins, Garth England, Tom Lumb, Gary Parsons and Jennie Vowles.

She also announced that they were in the throes of planning their Super Garden Trail to be held on November 23 and 24.

They are also looking at a major feasibility study on setting up a mini golf facility at the north end of Appleton Park.

On Sunday morning, the club followed up with an animated group enjoying a hearty brunch together at One Fat Bird.

What does your role entail?

I am the Managing Director and founded Eco Doors and Windows about nine years ago. When I first started the company I was the salesman doing the measures, and then being the hammerhand helping my builder install my sales.

Now I run the company on a daily basis and oversee everything from finance to install.

What has been your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement was building the company from one person to over 15 in eight years.

What do you love about what you do?

I love just being part of the action, talking to customers, talking with suppliers, talking and having fun with the install team and all the other people who make up my company.

How do you define success?

Success is a moveable feast in a growing company. A company does not grow in a linear manner but it's like flying an aeroplane through a very bumpy sky full of air pockets. One minute you are flying level, the next you have hit an airpocket and dropped 1000 feet. You have to continually evaluate what success is.

What do you do in your downtime (organizing events)?

I am bad about organising downtime, I work too many hours, six days a week, and should work less. But reading, DIY and helping my daughter compete her horse, when I'm allowed!

Many of our digitised records are available for download (check the licence to see what kind of use is permitted). Wellington City Archives has over 800,000 items in its collections. The earliest records date back to 1840 and

the most recent cover the present day.

Seton Nossiter Park’s Belmont Viaduct The towering Belmont railway viaduct, which bridged a deep gully at Paparangi, had been built in 1885 by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMRC). Unused since 1937, when the Tawa Flat deviation was opened, it was demolished by Territorial Force engineers in 1951.

The original wooden viaduct formed part of the WMR line between Wellington and Longburn, near Palmerston North, which was completed in November 1886. Standing 38 metres high and 104 metres long, this was the largest wooden trestle bridge in New Zealand, and one of the largest in the world at the time. Its construction required 212,000 superficial feet of kauri timber.

Territorial Force engineers were given the job as a training exercise. On 15 December 1951 it was destroyed by 44 kg of TNT. Today, its original concrete abutments are all that remain in the regenerating bush of Seton Nossiter Park.

WOUND CARE For many of us, wounds are a common part of everyday life, with accidents leading to cuts and scratches, grazes, lacerations, blisters and sometimes burns.

These can happen no matter how careful we are or how organised our homes or workplaces can be. A wound occurs when a physical injury to the body breaks the skin or a mucous membrane.

The body responds immediately and begins repairing the wound with the skin closing up and trying to return to normal as soon as possible. The time of repair may only be needed for a very short time and last for a matter of days or it may need to continue for weeks and months, depending on the type and size of the injury.

In the past many wounds have been “fixed” with a plaster, the multipurpose plastic dressing strip. These are fine for small scratches and cuts but there are now many more dressings available for the different types of wounds that can occur.

In the past it was believed that wounds should be kept dry but now it is recommended that to help a wound heal well it should be kept moist. This is because a moist wound environment allows the skin cells to grow more quickly, thus healing and returning to normal in much less time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore

the health of the tissue. With any wound once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline is appropriate to be used.

Next dry the area and apply the dressing.

However if the wound is unclean and is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed so that the wound does not become infected.

It is necessary in these cases to use an antiseptic to wash the area and remove unwanted particles and debris. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about which antiseptics are available and how to use them.

It is important to try and prevent infection from occurring but if the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor regarding antibiotics.

Wounds caused by burns may occur due to sunlight, flames from fire, scalds, chemical or electrical sources. The affected area must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The use of ice is not recommended in these cases.

Burns can be superficial affecting only the top surface layer of skin or can be much more serious affecting many layers of tissues.

Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

There are a number of life style factors that

can help with wound healing such as 1) diet 2) exercise 3) medication 4) dressing type 5) warmth. Your diet can affect the speed of the healing process.

Foods associated with wound healing are protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin A and zinc and a diet enriched with these components in your diet can enhance wound healing.

Regular exercise increases blood flow, improves general health and also speeds wound healing.

Medication that affects wound healing includes anti-inflammatory drugs as these can interfere with the body’s natural healing process and hamper the action of immune system cells. Talk to your pharmacist about your medication to see if any that you are prescribed will hinder wound healing.

Wounds that are dressed and kept warm heal faster. Dressings also need to be kept clean so change as necessary, usually not every day but maybe every few days depending on its condition.

See your Self Care pharmacist about the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or for your first aid kit. Also ask for the Pharmacy Self Care “Wound Care” card to take home and share with the family.

ABs fast track their World Cup ambitions When the All Blacks play with speed, they are unstoppable.

That is the takeaway from the only pool game that matters, a 23-13 win over the Springboks at Yokohama last Saturday night.

A 17 point blitz in five minutes proved the difference after the South Africans looked the more physically imposing team when the game was played at a snail’s

pace.

Inject speed, and the All Blacks are clearly the better team.

An arm wrestle suits South Africa and early on that is what we got.

The speed of George Bridge, Sevu Reece and Beauden Barrett were all difference makers.

It would be best not to forget some other players who also had

an impact.

Ardie Savea was excellent at the breakdown and had a strong running game.

Ben Smith made the most of his 18 minutes off the bench and looked every bit the assured player the purists know we love.

Trip to South America for young players

In July 2020, and for the second time in three years, local football coach Milan Bartosz will be leading a team of 1112-year-olds youngsters to Argentina, this time to play in a major youth tournament.

The Onslow Junior Football Club representatives, nine boys and one girl, will all be accompanied by their parents and their coach.

Football in South America is, says Milan, much more technical and played with far more intensity and flair than here in New Zealand.

So as he did last time, he is warning the youngsters that this is a tough path, playing against fiercely competitive youngsters.

“Some are from the slums and success is, quite literally, a matter of life and death.”

The poverty, and the way the game is played there was, he says, an eye-opener for the previous group which travelled every day to different venues, sometimes through the slums of Buenos Aires.

“Win or lose, this is great opportunity for our young people to learn and further develop their game,” he says. ”I am telling them that “They don’t know what they don’t know yet.

“There’s a world out there and they have no idea about what it’s like to be in it.”

The Onslow team will be the first Oceania representatives to play at the annual Buenos Aires Cup, this one marking that club’s cup’s tenth anniversary and including every country in South America and some from North America as well as Asia.

With fares alone between $1600 and $1800 for each person, the young players and their families, selected just few weeks ago, are now moving into intensive fundraising.

Very motivated parents have at least a dozen fund-raising ideas.

They are also looking for sponsors.

The experience will be worth it despite the expense says Milan. “We want to mould them into nice human beings as well as good sportspeople.”

Athletes look to new season The 2019/20 athletics season kicks off on Monday October 21 at the Onslow Amateur Athletics Club’s home base, Nairnville Park.

Newly-appointed club president Mark Hughson says there is much to be excited about and credits outgoing president Darren Young for his endless work ethic and perseverance.

“Darren came in seven seasons ago and has really turned the club around.

“We went from facing the prospect of folding, with falling numbers, to last year where we had to turn people away,” says Mark.

OAAC advice is therefore to get in quickly and register now as places fill up fast.

“We don’t like to turn kids away. Everyone’s welcome,” he adds.

“A great sense of satisfaction has been the impressive numbers at club nights, plus seeing the green Onslow singlet competing at many Interclub meetings across Wellington.

“In fact, the ‘Minties’ (Onslow’s kit resembling the favourite sweet) placed eighth of 20 clubs across Wellington last season,” says Mark, adding that they brought home over 10 medals at the Wellington Champs in March.

This season looks promising again, with the successful ‘ribbon night’ taking place before Christmas.

More specialist coaches are becoming involved and a growing number of kids are wishing to have a go at both club nights and Inter club, he says.

The season runs until late March and is hoped to culminate in a “hot Cross Country”.
