Trial of 24/7 contact By Glenise Deaver
Sergeant Sarah Riddering says a new trial portal to ensure 24/7 contact with the Police has been installed at the Johnsonville Community Policing Centre in Moorefield Road. The blue device, which you open to reveal your communication options on an interactive touch screen for information/data entry or queries, also offers a telephone. You can also plug your own headphones into it if that is your preference. Continued on page 2. Sergeant Sarah Riddering demonstrates the new 24/7 communication portal outside the Johnsonville Community Policing Centre. Photo: Glenise Dreaver

The defibrillator stolen from Alex Moore Park last June has been replaced by the Liverpool Football Supporters Club of Wellington, who had paid for the installation in the first place. Supporters’ club chair Andrew McGoff says their club had, last year, run a huge campaign called ‘Keep Wellington Beating’ to raise money for defibrillators to be installed in football clubs all over Wellington. They raised $25,000 in 2019, and Andrew admits to great pride in the initiative. It’s personal he says, coming about after he witnessed a cardiac arrest on the street in front of him, and he’s embarrassed to admit he didn’t know how to do CPR. That spurred him on to learn the technique and also to start the campaign that has allowed Liverpool supporters to put 15 of the life-saving devices on football grounds around Wellington. Their gift is subsidised in each case by $1700 from the New Zealand Football Association. In the case of the replacement

Wadestown welcomes new minister By Glenise Dreaver
“I was promised we’d be ‘loved to death’ when we came to Wadestown,” says the area’s new Presbyterian minister Donald Gordon. ‘And it’s true, he says. “These are the most genuinely loving and accepting people I’ve ever come across.” He’s not just being nice – he has, he says, experienced some places where that’s not been true. “But we’ve been welcomed and befriended here in a way we haven’t been before.” Donald, his wife Angela and children Eloise and Daniel arrived from the South Island in January and after having to manage with a supply minister for the last few years, the congregation did, he knows, breathe a big sigh of relief when he was appointed. While Sunday mornings had been taken care of, the parish had been running itself with teams of volunteers taking on work a minister would usually do. That’s no longer needed. With young children of his own, 38-year-old Donald is well aware of their needs and is looking to strengthen the children’s ministry in the area. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than at the toddler’s singing and movement classes on Wednesday mornings. “I’m often here to join in and look silly!” he says. Donald’s looking ahead to the challenge of one big question: What is God calling us here to do in this place?

Newlands brigade promotes hub On December 10 2019, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) announced a proposal to disestablish the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade. Three options were proposed, including co-locating the brigade in Johnsonville and the brigade, plus the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand (UFBA) and employee unions had until February 3 2020 for feedback.

A joint submission from the Newlands brigade and UFBA is strongly advocating for what may be a New Zealand first, a pilot ‘Community Resilience Hub’. It is proposed to take in FENZ, NVFB, Newlands Resilience Group and Wellington City Council, supported by key community groups including residents’ associations and local Iwi, Nga Hau E Wha O Papararangi,
This initiative would provide a model for community and official participation in Integrated Emergency Management, a space where multiple emergency and community support services would be co-located. With parts of the brigade’s own building being 100 years old at least, the group has sounded out the prospect of an already available commercial premises for a proposed $69,000 p.a requiring,
their submission says, minimal modification to house personnel, a fire appliance and equipment. Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor has called a public meeting on the future of Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade to be held in the Newlands Intermediate School hall at 6.30pm on Monday March 2. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster and the chief executive of FENZ Rhys Jones will be present.
Fire ban Greater Wellington is in a restricted fire season. This includes Kapiti Coast, Porirua, Wellington City and the Hutt Valley. If you need to light a fire go to www. checkitsalright.nz to check whether you will need to apply for a fire permit, allowing you to meet specific conditions to manage your fire safely. You are reminded that using any machinery can spark a fire, including lawnmowers, welders, or even a plough and being asked to use them in the morning or evenings, during the cooler parts of the day. You are also reminded to make sure any fires or historic burn sites from the past two months are fully extinguished.

Scholarship takes Otari gardener to the far far south By Glenise Dreaver
Otari Native Botanic Gardens gardener Megan Ireland spent ten days in December cruising the SubAntarctic Islands and Fiordland on a True Young Explorer Scholarship. English born and trained, she fell in love with New Zealand plants during a stint in the Scilly Isles, where the gardens had New Zealand plants. So she decided to come here to further her interest – and volunteering at Otari was her first stop. More “temping” followed in the South Island but Megan felt the pull of Otari and came back to a permanent job. The scholarship enabling her to go even further south, to see the islands and their “mega herbs”, her particular
interest, was too good to pass up. So on December 13 she sailed from Bluff on a ten-day-long trip. The trip coincided with the megaherbs flowering season and, she says, seeing plants like golden Bulbinella rossii in full bloom on Campbell Island was special. “And there were other plants there I’d never seen before.” Seeing the southern rata in full flower on Enderby Island, with the megaherbs underneath was also memorable. A Fiordland leg finished the trip and there was a surprise, a helicopter ride to find kea among the alpine plants. Megan is very grateful for the Heritage Expeditions scholarship, and sponsorship from BGANZ NZ and the Otari Trust to make this trip

Life of service recognised By Glenise Dreaver
Michele Rowe of the Newlands Community House thinks the volunteering gene must be contagious. She has been awarded Rotary’s prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award medal for the huge range of volunteer work she does in her home suburb and nearby. That’s because, she says, her father was in the RAF. “Wherever we went, me and my two brothers had to work for others.” She remembers, for example, the gardening, sanding and repainting they did for the Gloucester Mental Institute, just one of their volunteering roles. “The staff buildings had been virtually destroyed and they were needed again, so we helped with that,” she says. Nowadays, her volunteering sees this British-trained social worker assisting the elderly and low-risk offenders from the Corrections Department, working with Kiwi Community

Assistance, Newlands Food Bank, helping run a soup kitchen organising and managing volunteers planting native trees and shrubs at local schools. She helps run the Jay Street native plant nursery and works on the Newlands Community Garden. And perhaps that volunteering is now embedded in the genes. Michele’s teenage son and her daughter both volunteer as well.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award she was presented with recognises exemplary work in community service and helping those in need. It is named after Paul Harris, Rotary’s founder. Importantly this recognition for Michele has been matched with a Johnsonville Rotary Club gift of $US1000 to the international Rotary Foundation, for its worldwide charitable work.

We have also had the first lot of statistics in around child poverty since our ambitious plan to reduce and eventually eliminate it, and they are very good, with 18,400 children having been lifted out of poverty. We all suffer, through crime and high social costs, of ignoring the needs of those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder, so these gains benefit us all. Obviously, that is why we are also investing so heavily in rebuilding school infrastructure that had been allowed to rundown over the last decade of the last Government.
I’ve been asked why Jacinda Ardern appearing on the front page of international Time magazine last week is so significant; firstly, it’s worldwide recognition that we are privileged to have someone pretty special leading us in these volatile times, and secondly, it’s about brand New Zealand, ensuring our small country’s profile is high, to our trade and political advantage; multinational companies spend billions to get this sort of exposure so people feel good about their product. There are major travel and trade implications arising from the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) spread, and we will be looking to attract new business and visitors to replace what we are now losing from China.
Locally, I am hosting a meeting in Newlands for the locals to both have their say and hear from Fire Chiefs and the Council, including the Mayor, about future plans around the Newlands Fire Brigade. It is being held at Newlands Intermediate School Hall, Bracken Road, 6:30pm this Monday.
Fortunately our economy is better placed than most to withstand what we hope will be a temporary hit to the NZ and World economy, but having a Prime Minister of Jacinda’s standing to push brand New Zealand can only help.
your MP, I believe that even in a GregAs O’Connor world of electronic and social media, still a place for a good old MPthere forisŌhāriu fashioned town hall (in this case school hall) meeting. All are welcome.

until late at night. Replacing the six inch diameter pipe proved complex, with water to some affected areas going on and off during the day, some being without water until 10.30pm. The break was close to a sewerage pipe which also needed to be repaired and isolated to avoid contamination of the water supply and care had to be taken not to damage broadband cables, and electricity and gas supplies. Some deep ditches had to be dug in this process, and shored up for safety reasons. Much of Wellington’s infrastructure is of a similar age and the problems are compounded by the terra cotta pipes laid at a later stage in some areas and these have proved more fragile than cast iron.

And it must also find out how the network became so poorly funded by its owners. “Politicking won’t solve this issue.” While there have been some recent high profile failures of water systems, in Willis Street for example, it was on Thursday September 5 2019 that locals were presented with a taste of things to come. “Finger pointing” by the Wellington City Council over the poor state of city’s water network is not good enough says Wellington Chamber of Commerce chief executive John Milford. The decision by Wellington’s councillors to launch an investigation is an attempt to hold everyone but themselves accountable, he says. Twelve of 15 Wellington City councillors signed up to a wide-ranging inquiry into Wellington Water’s operations, just hours after the Mayor announced his own taskforce to look into the water network. However, John says the council owns the pipes, and it is the councillors who sign off on all funding and investment decisions. “The Chamber has long been on the record calling for councillors to invest properly in our city’s infrastructure. “Despite significant yearon-year rates increases, capital expenditure on core infrastructure keeps being delayed and deferred meaning decades of under-funding. “That’s not the fault of officials. LETTERS to the editor
MP replies to critic Dear Editor In reply to your correspondent David Bond, (Independent Herald, Feb 20 p. 4) I think it is important that constituents understand that the $12 billion infrastructure plan, which includes road upgrades and the construction of new roads, also makes provision for rail, cycle
lanes and pedestrian walkways. The increasingly electrified vehicle fleet will still need roads to drive on and these projects align with the Coalition Government’s intention to create sustainable, efficient transport options in the future, aspects which were absent in National’s planning along with
the funding. Ohariu residents who have sat in long lines of traffic spewing fumes into the air through Horowhenua will welcome the four-lane highway from Otaki to north of Levin. Greg O’Connor MP, Ohariu

Brett’s Brief
Fun in the sun at Khandallah Park Picnic By Brian Sheppard
After a few drizzly days, Onslow Residents’ Community Association (ORCA) was relieved to have good weather for their Khandallah Park annual summer picnic. Friendly pirates, of every shape, size and age were everywhere. ORCA’s president Nicola McFaull said that they had chosen the pirate theme this year to coincide with the opening performance of Khandallah Arts Theatre’s Play-in-the-Park
‘Mean Jean the Pirate Queen’. Some (just a few! Ed.) of the more cynically-minded may have wondered if locally-based MP’s were type-cast, with National List MP Brett Hudson as Pirate Master of Ceremonies and Ohariu’s Labour MP Greg O’Connor helping on the bubble-making stall. Wellington city councillor Diane Calvert lent a hand wherever it was needed and also helped to staff the information table. Nicola says it is evident that
National Party List MP based in Ōhāriu
Onslow’s community spirit is strong, as everyone worked together so that families could have picnics, children could play and friends could catch up for a day of fun in the sun. Groups which stepped up included Khandallah Presbyterian Church, Predator Free Khandallah, Khandallah Arts Theatre, Onslow College, Rotary Kauakau, Kaukau 100, Healthy Futures Trust, Cancer Society Sun Programme and ORCA members.
Kiwis are going backwards under this Government.
The Government has no plan and can’t even deliver on that.
Under National the economy was growing at nearly 4 per cent, now it’s fallen to just over 2 per cent growth.
National has a plan to create opportunities for New Zealanders, to keep costs down and to ensure people have more money in their back pockets.
Job creation has tumbled and with it opportunities for people to gain new employment and skills. This is all happening at a time when the world wants to buy from us. Our export prices are at record highs. We should be doing better. Instead, the Government has squandered the economy and surpluses they inherited from National. With economic decline comes a higher cost of living. Rents have risen sixty dollars per week on average and people’s fuel costs are up significantly as the Government piles on more and more tax. This leaves less in people’s pockets to meet their needs.
We have announced policies to index tax brackets to the cost of living, to repeal the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax, and to introduce no new taxes. We’ll cut red tape and regulation, and we’ll build the transport and social infrastructure New Zealanders need. We’ll support small business with sound employment rules to encourage investment and job and wage growth. We will put more money in your back pocket, provide more opportunities for you and attack the cost of living. We have the plan, competency and a track record of delivery. New Zealanders deserve better. National will deliver for them.

Remembering the “Fiducia” This 1954 photograph from the Wellington Tramway Museum’s archive at Paekakariki is of more historical significance than a quick glance would reveal. Although trams didn’t completely leave Wellington streets until May 1964, the major Karori route converted to trolley buses in October 1954. This photograph shows Fiducia tram 245 running near Karori Park with the newly-installed trolley wires ready for the change-over. “The Fiducia single saloon
had 32 wooden seats, but could take virtually unlimited standees” says long-time former Karori resident Henry Brittain from the tramway. “ With almost six decades since trams were the main form of public transport in the Capital, we’re fi nding whole new generations visiting the attraction for the quite special experience of a tram ride that they have never encountered before in their lifetime.”

You can also ask us to digitise a record for you, for a fee, through the service. Wellington City Archives has over 800,000 items in its collections. The earliest records date back to 1840 and the

all ages. There were many smiley faces to be seen as the Karnival supporters relaxed, watched entertainment or took an opportunity to ‘give-it-a-go’ in other activities. Ben Burn Park is transformed in a matter of a few hours from a sports field to a ‘pop up’ village offering all the fun at a Karnival - food, games, entertainment, and a safe environment for all ages in a restful park setting. A big ‘THANK YOU” from the Lions Club of Karori Members to all the stallholders and visitors on the day for making it a successful event. We hope to see you all, and many more, at our 50th Karori Karnival on Sunday 21st February 2021.

Standing behind is Garth England, 92, the oldest member of Karori Lions, who has recently completed 40 years of service in Lions.” “A good family friendly day was had by all at the 49th Karori Karnival on the 16th Feb. Safe use of medicines We all need to take medicines at some time during our lives - for some it is everyday, others only sometimes for a cold or headache. Self Care pharmacists can provide you with the fact card Safe Use of Medicines, and help you with any questions you have about any medicines you are taking. Whether you buy medicines or get them on prescription, Self Care pharmacists advise that they have some good suggestions for taking medicines properly, and for getting the best results from their use. Know what your medicines are for. Even if your doctor has explained, when you collect your medicines discuss with your pharmacist what each medicine is for. Your pharmacist can give you information on the expected effects of each medicine and how to take or use them correctly, and whether they will interact with other medicines you have been prescribed or medicines that you have purchased. Before taking any medicine, read the label carefully to confirm you are taking the correct medicine, the correct dose, at the correct time. This is especially important if you take many medicines at different times of the day. Labels have other important information such as when to take the medicines in relation to food (with food or on an empty stomach), whether the medicine must be swallowed whole, whether it has to be used-up by a certain date. Pharmacists can also advise
you if you miss a dose and when to take the next one. Sometimes medication may be large and difficult to swallow. Not all tablets and capsules can be halved or crushed and your pharmacist can help you with this. Talk to your pharmacist if you develop any unusual symptoms after you start taking a medicine. It is best to get this checked out as it may be an allergic reaction or an unwanted side effect of the medicine. Always measure liquid medicines accurately, using proper measures, to make sure you get the correct dose. A range of reusable measuring devices are available from pharmacies and your pharmacist can advise you on the one most suitable for you and your family. Drink a large glass of water as you swallow tablets or capsules. This will stop the medicine becoming stuck in your throat and help it get down to your stomach quickly to start working as soon as possible. It helps to lean forward as you swallow. Only take medicines that have been prescribed for you, and those recommended for you by your pharmacist. Do not use other people’s medicines because they may not be suitable for your health condition. Other people's medicines may interact with other medicines you are taking. Store medicines correctly and dispose of them safely. Safe means out of reach of children - preferably in a locked cupboard.

This is really vital when children come to your home only occasionally. Store medicines in a dry place, away from direct light or heat, so they don't degrade. However, some medicines need to be kept in the fridge. Don't keep medicines that are no longer needed. Despite the wastage, there are safety concerns in keeping old medicines "just in case". Don't throw them out in general rubbish, instead, talk to your pharmacist about safe disposal. Medicines returned to your pharmacist cannot be reused, and charges cannot be refunded. Discuss with your pharmacist if your medicines look different from what you are expecting. It is best to be reassured that everything is as it should be. If you are having trouble managing your medicines, your pharmacist may be able to help with their packaging especially for your own individual medication needs. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about your medicine, to get the best outcome for your health.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Farewell cricket on the airwaves? Radio Sport no longer providing the sound track for the New Zealand summer is a sad reality of business in 2020. Parent company NZME confirmed last week Radio Sport would no longer provide live ball-by-ball domestic or international cricket coverage from next season. The announcement ends a 20-year association with cricket in this country. For me, at 30 years old, it ends

a link to my childhood I have neglected as an adult. Growing up, we did not have the finances to afford Sky TV so my love of sport came from trips to my grandparents’ house to watch free-to-air rugby, cricket and horse racing and listening to live coverage on Radio Sport. My Friday nights were an 8.30pm bedtime where I would then turn on my radio and drift off to sleep listening to the second half of the
Super 12. Christmas holidays were spent, in part, at Lake Benmore in Twizel in the front seat trying to get clear reception to listen to the cricket. There was a purity and an innocence to it that I did not appreciate until I heard the news last week. Now I don’t listen to radio at night, in fact, hardly ever. I’m sure other young professionals are in the same boat. NZME say they have been pro-
Ratings drive revenue and radio has, in part given in to podcasts now. That is how I consume almost all of my audio. I rarely listen to live commercial radio. It is evolution at its finest. I feel for the likes of Bryan Waddle, Jeremy Coney and the other voices of summer who may need to find other work. The only constant is change - this is a sad one.
viding cricket coverage at a loss for several years and I am sure that is correct. It is not personal, it is just business. I feel for the blind and visually impaired people who rely on radio commentaries to paint the picture of the game for them. Can another radio company step in? Sure, but if it is not financially viable then it will be an impossible sell.
Marsden tennis team takes title On February 19, Samuel Marsden Collegiate School’s tennis team won College Sport Wellington’s Premier Team Championships to take out the Belinda Cordwell Cup. Marsden and Queen Margaret College were the finalists in the event held at the Renouf Centre. Luckily the
weather held off for the girls to play all their matches. The players were Jade Otway, Lucy Dobson and Ella Robertson, all of Karori, and Juliane Gillespie of Khandallah. Marsden won 5-1, taking both doubles matches and three out of
four singles. The cup is a new one day event introduced this year, to find the best tennis teams in the Wellington region, Wellington College boys beat Hutt International into second place with a 3-1 win to take out the Onny Parun cup in the same event.
Johnsonville women win Bowls Wellington Triples The Johnsonville combination of Cynthia Evans (skip), Nicola Lowe and Kaaren Guilford triumphed in the recent Bowls Wellington Open Triples event. Play began on the Saturday with 27 teams fighting it out to qualify for the knock-out stages on Sunday and Monday. All three Johnsonville teams qualified by winning at least two of their three games. However, Cynthia’s team was the only Johnsonville Triple to qualify for the semi-final.
There they came up against a strong Naenae team skipped by Lisa White, a former New Zealand Blackjack representative. In a very tense game that went down to the last bowl, Johnsonville prevailed 15-13. The final was played at Island Bay against another experienced team, from Victoria, skipped by the well-performed Helen King. The Johnsonville bowlers led from the third end and established a good 14-6 lead after 10 ends of the 18 end final. However, Victoria came back strongly and with just one end
remaining Johnsonville was just ahead at 16-14. In an exciting last end Victoria held an early one shot lead but Nicola Lowe played a pressure bowl to give Johnsonville the advantage. Victoria needed a two to force an extra end but Helen King’s last bowl run shot gave Johnsonville a second shot. Johnsonville finally won 18-14 to take out the Triples Trophy. This win gave Kaaren her eighth Wellington Centre Title and both Cynthia and Nicola were able to celebrate their first Open Centre win.

Your dog’s safety in the heat As the days are still warm it’s vital to keep your dog’s capacity to manage the heat in mind, and to look out for signs of overheating. Dogs don’t sweat like we do, so panting is one of their key methods of cooling themselves down. Once it gets too hot (or too humid) for them to cool themselves effectively anymore, there is a risk of heatstroke. Here are some great tips for keeping your dog cool: - Don’t exercise them in the heat of the day! Stick to walks in the morning or in the evening once the footpaths have cooled off. - Exercise near a water source where they can swim to cool off (e.g. rivers, lakes, ocean, sprinkler,
backyard paddling pool…) - Be mindful of the temperature of the ground. If you cannot keep your bare hand on it for five seconds, it’s too hot for their paws! - Always have cool drinking water available for them - Ensure they have plenty of shade/shelter from the sun Be vigilant at keeping an eye out for signs of heatstroke! These include: excessive panting, salivation, vomiting, increased body temperature, rapid heartbeat, collapse, or loss of coordination and seizures. Place wet towels around the neck, armpits and belly and seek veterinary care immediately.

And there was LIGHT!
Skylight Specialists have been specialising in skylights for 25+ years. We have yet to come across a brand/make/type or configuration of skylight that we do not know everything about. Skylight Specialists is LBP (Government approved licensed building and roofing practitioners) , with 30+ years in the building industry and employ a highly skilled team which consists of trade qualified glaziers, roofers and builders. When we come and assess your skylight/s we will provide you with a free, no
obligation quotation. We will also provide you with a detailed report including photos that will include our findings and recommendations whether it be for general maintenance, repairs or replacement. At this time of year everyone is concerned about insulation of their homes, trying to keep warm and retain heat. Unfortunately, skylights are often overlooked, even when they can be sometimes the main factor of heat loss. Older skylights are sometimes full-time venting without the homeowner even being aware of this, which is no
different from leaving a window open 24/7. Others are only single glazed or just plastic. By upgrading to double glazing you can retain up to 70% more of your heat. A lot of skylights we come across is simply a piece of glass glued to the roof structure of your home – This is by far inadequate for many reasons including thermal properties and condensation issues, as the moisture has no where to go but get absorbed by the structure of your home. We will assess the entire skylight including the flashings (roof flashings
