The Wellington North Rotary Club has given out 18 scholarships to emerging young people in the community to help them with future studies.

The club launched 2022 with a barbeque held at the Khandallah Bowling Club with the prime focus of acknowledging the 18 recipients of the club’s tertiary scholarships, worth $60,000 for the coming year.

Eight of the recipients were present and spoke during the evening while the remaining 10 sent in video clips.

The group was joined by Noah Walker, a Tawa College musician who was a recipient of a grant from a Trust associated with the Club.

Noah entertained the audience with a rousing performance of an Elvis compilation.

Each scholar had a story to tell, not looking back to their often traumatic origins and difficult family circumstances, but to their recent achievements and future aspirations.

They included Kaveesha Kumar, whose family emigrated from Malaysia.

She plans to study for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours at the University of Canterbury.

During her years at Tawa College, where she was a prefect, Kaveesha coached at the Onslow Gymnastics Club and was a swim instructor for Wellington City Council.

Head Boy, Football Captain and second overall in academics at St. Bernard’s College, Indian-born Saran Ramachandran has aspirations to become a Neurosurgeon, commencing with a BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Auckland.

With his mother as a caregiver, his father as a taxi driver and the need to support family back in India, Saran sees his award as the key to enabling him to commence his tertiary studies.

Naomi Parte arrived with her family as refugees from Myanmar in 2016, speaking no English, knowing no-one and having no money. She has applied herself conscientiously and completed her first year studying software engineering at Victoria University. At Wellington East Girls College, Naomi was technology prefect and the ’tech’ person in her church community. At University, she is part of the Student Life Christian Club and she has been selected to train as one of the leaders for the coming year.

The Wellington North Scholarship Trust was established in 1990 to recognise the club’s 25th anniversary. Its capital was later substantially enhanced by the legacy of Ian Crabtree, a former club member. The Rotary Club is proud to be able to support tertiary students who, while limited in the ability to fund their studies, have demonstrated academic success and community service worthy of its support.

Hey Everyone! This week we are back to having some extra restrictions in place.

With the situation in Australia, it is understandable why we are taking extra precautions. For us, nothing really has changed in Real Estate, we had already been taking extra measures such as sanitising contact areas, vaccine passports at open homes, etc. We’ll be taking a few extra steps to ensure your viewing at our properties are as safe as possible (plus we’ll be keeping our sellers safe too!).

This week I want to share a few tips for keeping your lawns looking nice this Summer!

1. Keep it Longer – Yes it may be a pain to always mow your lawns, but if you cut the lawns too short, it can damage the grass, and if it gets scorched at this length, it may not recover. So, keep your lawnmower at a slightly higher setting.

2. Weed & Feed it! – Funny enough, there is a great product called weed & feed, which provides the nutrients and removes basic weeds from the lawn without damaging it. Nutrients and maintaining a weed-free lawn, is an easy way to keep it looking lush.

3. Aerate & Water – If you have sadly let your lawn look like a desert, you can try revive it by aerating the soil (can use something like a garden fork), and then watering it sufficiently. Do the watering first thing in the morning, this minimises any water wastage through evaporation and the grass makes the most of it through the early morning photosynthesis.

4. Dog Rocks – If you have a dog (or have children who pee in the yard), make sure you buy some Dog Rocks

for their water bowl/cup. It is a 100% natural product that will help save your lawn from the nasty burn patches that urine can cause.

5. Traffic Flow – we all have it… that worn out dead patch where we walk over every day. So, while you are reviving that dead patch, clock up some extra steps and take the scenic route to the door!

Prevention is ALWAYS better than cure (and cheaper). In these ‘once in a blue moon’ Welly summers… it is always better to stay on top of your lawns and look after it. If you are thinking of selling your property and don’t have the luxury of time. There are faster options such as ready lawn, hydro seeding, etc.

Johnsonville cycleway plans to be discussed The Johnsonville Community Association and Johnsonville Business Group will hold a public meeting this Wednesday to discuss the proposed cycleway for Johnsonville Road.

The Wellington City Council’s new Bike Plan includes adding a “Primary Bike Path” or cycleway along the length of Johnsonville Road.

The two groups are concerned car parks will be removed in favour of the new cycleway which could negatively impact businesses.

In a press release; JCA president Tony Randle and JBG spokesman Mark Kirk-Burnnand say there are better options for the proposed cycleway to go in Johnsonville.

“A key reason we have few cyclists along (Johnsonville) Road, is it is both difficult and unsafe for many cyclists, especially through the busy roundabouts to the north.

“This is in addition to the obvious fact that Johnsonville is too far and too hilly for most people to choose to cycle to work - only about two percent of Johnsonville commuters travel by bike.”

“The WCC has long held that Moorefield Road is the main cycleway route into and through Johnsonville,” they say.

“The council built this wide combined walkway/cycleway along the Western side of this road as part of the Johnsonville Triangle Roading improvements in 2014.

“This cycling route is much safer because it avoids crossing the Moorefield/Johnsonville roundabout and provides an easier journey into the CBD via Burma Road and Ngaio Gorge.

“The Moorefield Road cycleway also leads to our schools and so is the main cycling route that would be used by local students.

Transmission Gully work drags on The Transmission Gully project continues to grind its way to a finish line which keeps getting pushed out.

An update on the delayed project and suspected completion date could come in mid-February.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is continuing to work with the Transmission Gully contractor Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP) and their subcontractors, CPB HEB Joint Venture and Ventia, to support getting the new motorway open to the public as quickly as possible.

As the Public Private Partnership (PPP) contractor for Transmission Gully, WGP has subcontracted CPB HEB to undertake the motor-

way’s design and construction, and Ventia to operate and maintain the motorway for 25 years, after which it will be handed over to Waka Kotahi at an agreed standard.

There are still many outstanding construction issues to address, safety and quality assurance tests to meet, and consent compliance tasks to complete before the Transmission Gully motorway can safely and legally open to the public.

Out of 100 safety and quality assurance tests currently required under the PPP contract before the road can safely and legally open, as at January 14, 52 final test submissions have been received from CPB HEB, of which 39 have been accepted by the Independent

Reviewer as meeting the required standards.

As of last week, 32 consent tasks are complete and 10 consent tasks remain outstanding.

Most importantly two of these outstanding tasks relate to stormwater management.

A fully functioning stormwater system, capable of treating road run-off water to the required standard must be operational for road opening.

“We are working hard to reach a pragmatic solution with the contractor and subcontractors to get the road safely and legally opened as soon as possible, balanced with protecting the long-term quality and reliability of the road,” Waka

The Transmission Gully project continues to be plagued by delays as the completion date is still unknown.

date as soon as a timeframe on completing the required work is known. This update is likely to be provided in mid-February.

Otari welcomes funding to conserve native orchids ƿtari-Wiltons Bush has received a grant through Te Tahua Taiao Nga Taonga Lotteries Environment and Heritage Fund for a project aiming to save some of New Zealand’s most threatened orchids from extinction.

The project which has received funding of $110,000 for three years will be focusing on five orchid species unique to New Zealand. Some of these orchids are known from a few spots in the country with only a handful of plants left at each site.

Conservation and Science Advisor Karin Van der Walt says the project is the first of its kind in the country, and will help to develop techniques to propagate these orchids from seed so we can increase the size of wild populations and create back-up collections at ƿtari.

“We will be visiting populations of the five threatened species to determine how healthy the populations are. Hand-pollination will be used to increase the seed production in these threatened

species, so we do not impact natural reproduction when we collect seed for the project.

“Orchids are interesting plants to work on because they are quite particular about where they live, and their pollination and life cycle are usually quite challenging to figure out,” says Karin.

For instance, orchid seeds will only germinate in the presence of a specific fungal partner, this process is called symbiotic germination. The relationship between the orchid and fungus benefit both, the orchids provide sugars, B vitamins and a safe house to the fungus while the fungus provides water, minerals and more than 80 percent of the plant’s carbon requirements.

Scientists are however able to simulate the role of the fungus in a lab using a special orchid food, this method is called asymbiotic germination.

“Once we have collected the seeds, we will germinate them using symbiotic and asymbiotic methods. We will use DNA se-

quencing methods to identify the fungal partner that promotes germination in the wild,” adds Karin.

Globally there has been a huge amount of work done on orchids in the wild and how to conserve them.

We have only done a little bit of that work here in Aotearoa says ƿtari Team Manager Tim Park.

“The LionV ƿtari Plant Conservation laboratory has recently been expanded so it is the perfect time to embark on such an exciting project,” he says.

The Council-funded expansion is in the old curators’ house and it has created much needed extra space for researchers and research assistants.

This project is a collaboration between Otari and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Orchid expert Dr Carlos Lehnebach from Te Papa has described and named several new species of orchids for New Zealand.

“We have more than 100 species of orchids in New Zealand and at

New artwork reflects local history A stunning new artwork has been created by local artist Keri-Mei Zagrobelna for the SAVICA building on Customhouse Quay – reflecting the history of the area and complementing the local sculptural walk.

After visiting the site several times and talking to the public, the artist learned that they would like to have something that wasn’t too abstract or unrecognisable, and which spoke to the local history of the area.

The design depicts a carved koruru (figure head) and maihi (representing the arms), as seen on marae (MƗRri meeting house),

transitioning into a 1920’s architect’s compass.

In this depiction the transition of traditional MƗori techniques and architecture into European materials and design can be likened to the building of relationships between indigenous tangata whenua and European colonial settlers to the area, says Keri-Mei Zagrobelna.

“It demonstrates innovation, and I hope it will provoke interest and curiosity about the history of the local area through architecture, trade and significant historical stories held within the land.”

The building is located on what would have

been the foreshore area before land reclamation took place to develop the city, and is located near prominent sites of significance for mana whenua, Kumutoto 3Ɨ Kumutoto Stream and the former shoreline.

Wellington City Council’s City Arts team partnered with the owner of 86 Customhouse Quay, SAVICA, and their property management company, CBRE to support the development of the artwork on the façade of a prominent heritage building in the centre of the city.

SAVICA expressed an interest in changing this site – once an advertising billboard – to a platform for contemporary art that enhances the streetscape and contributes to the creativity of the city.

“We are dedicated to playing our part in enhancing the character and heritage of the building while keeping its link to the

evolving culture and art scene of the city.

Keri-Mei is here symbolising the marriage of two cultures in excellence,” says SAVICA’s Arnauld Kindt.

Designed by Wellington architects Clere & Clere in 1925 and completed in 1928, the building is approaching its centenary. The architecture, deriving from Renaissance Palace design, is one of the most significant examples of this form in the capital. Dominating the Customhouse Quay façade is a large portal which occupies nearly a third of the vertical height of the building. This leads to a main office space which, at the time of its construction, was one of the largest single rooms in New Zealand.

The artwork will be in place for at least the next 12 months, complementing the city’s sculpture trail, and architecture in the central business district.

Mental health response partnership model a success The findings of an independent evaluation of the Wellington Co-Response Team (CRT) initiative trialled in Wellington last year has concluded the pilot scheme was a success.

The year-long trial, from March 2020 to March 2021, brought together staff from Wellington District Police, Wellington Free Ambulance and Capital & Coast DHB, offering support to people in mental distress from a wider range of specialists.

Staff from the three different organisations within the CRT were dispatched to both Police and Ambulance emergency mental health callouts in the same vehicle.

The evaluation of the pilot scheme, undertaken by the University of Otago Department of Psychological Medicine, found CRT had a range of positive benefits, including a reduction in the use of powers under the Mental Health Act and less reliance on emergency departments.

“The evaluation itself ran for the 12-month period alongside the trial,” says Police Community Focus Manager, Inspector Brent Register.

“It’s extremely positive to know the evaluation findings support what we understood anecdotally – that an approach that puts the person in distress and their

wKƗnau at the heart of decision making and care planning works.”

Conclusions from high-level evaluation findings included: s Reduction in the use of powers under the Mental Health Act s Resolving matters at point of contact, including provision of a wrap-around service s Referring the client to pathways outside of direct transport to a Police station or Emergency Department s Reduced Emergency Department service utilisation s Information sharing improved s Was viewed as culturally safe s Was considered to decrease the risk of violence.

“In times of mental health distress, it is important that people get the support and care they need sooner and in an integrated way,” says Chief Executive of Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHB, Fionnagh Dougan.

“Mental health kaimahi attending emergency call-outs with police and ambulance staff can offer people experiencing crisis the support they need on-thespot, and more streamlined access to the most relevant service.

“People who are experiencing mental distress do not always require hospital-level care.

The CRT has helped enable crisis callouts to be resolved, and

people to receive comfort and support, in a more appropriate environment.

Working across agencies is key to finding the best options for people.

“The pilot has also strengthened collaboration across our services, leading to better reported outcomes for consumers.”

Wellington Free Ambulance Chief Executive David Robinson says the CRT model meant the team could offer more individualised solutions and timely expert advice.

“This joint response has had an extremely positive impact, providing multi-dimensional support to those experiencing mental health distress in our community,” says David Robinson.

“As the first interagency response of its kind in New Zealand, it is a privilege as an emergency service to be part of the Co-Response Team with our partner agencies, Wellington District Police and Capital & Coast District Health Board DHB.” Relevant agencies and stakeholders, including the Police, Capital & Coast DHB and Wellington Free Ambulance, are now taking time to consider the findings with a view to determining next steps both in Wellington and nationally.

Johnsonville Club remembers a cool Kiwi and his NZ native bird art The kiwi statue that had been on the roof of Kiwi Trophies overlooking Newlands Road for many years was in danger of being lost forever as the buildings were being demolished. But local Johnsonville Club members Vince Stephens and Dave Edgecombe were able to save the day – and the kiwi! It is now on display on Fitzpatrick Street in Newlands.

The kiwi was built by Johnsonville resident and Club member Gordon Rose who has now passed away.

Gordon’s granddaughter Robyn Minchin says he was an eccentric type who was very artistic for his time. He created kiwi, moa, pukeko, tui and kereru sculptures for many tourist attractions around the country.

Love dancing at the Tarrant Studios The Covid roller coaster continued in 2021 and dancers at the Tarrant Studios in Cuba Street continued to dance whenever they could. The disruption and the inconsistency of life at school, at home and at ballet neverthe-less provided a platform for performance at all levels. Scholars are at the top of the training structure at the studio and this level precedes full time study, tertiary study and going out into the real world. The Scholars have many talents and a diversity of skills that grow with them and there are examinations (Royal Academy of Dance) community events (Chinese New Year, Love Local, CubaDupa,The Newtown Festival ....) and regular weekly classes. The year ended with two performances at the Opera House for all students from the Graded classes and Scholar levels.

The World We will Live In was a dancercreated response to ideas elevant to their world. The challenges of confusion, calamity, change, climate and choice....all relevant in young lives today in a way unlike before.

As well, the fantasy world of traditional storytelling and the music of Prokoviev, a great master composer, took the stage in Cinderella. From the magic of the ballroom to the littlest mouse helping Cinderella with the housework to the Prince and the precocious and over the top stepsisters and stepmother, Cinderella was a joyous experience for all. The trials of ‘traffic lights’ hit in

our performance week - again a roller coaster of challenges for all!

The confidence,ability to cope,normality, friendships, goals, mental and physical well being that dance supports and develops has been very important for all of us at the Tarrant Studios. 2022 has come up fast and ballet classes as well as the Adult Ballet programme and a range of community classes are preparing for a new year of dancing at Cuba Street. There is a real and critical shortage of rehearsal space in the city and a new initiative in 2022 will see the studios available to provide space for artists making new works. Cuba Street Studios will be available to hire from 9-3 we look forward to rehearsals, projects, film and theatre coming to the inner city for Cuba St inspiration - and great coffee! At the same time the regular dance community classes will continue to dance the night away!

Wellington is a city of events and creativity - we look forward to being a part of that in whatever new shape this takes. Dog owners warned over toxic algae Vigilance is being urged for swimmers and dog owners as two more river sites along the Hutt River and one on the Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke have returned results of toxic algae at amber warning levels. Detached algal mats are also present at all sites.

The sites are located at Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke Campground, Hutt River at Birchville and Hutt River at Poets Park.

Greater Wellington Marine and Freshwater Team Leader, Dr Evan Harrison said, “Toxic algae has increased to amber levels at all

sites meaning we strongly advise caution to swimmers and to check the LAWA website regularly for updates before getting in the water”.

The warning bears greater significance for dog owners as dogs like the smell and taste of the algae and a small piece, only around the size of a 50c coin, is enough to kill a dog.

“The risk is higher with detached algal mats being found at both sites, meaning the algae has broken off rocks in the riverbed and accumulated at the river’s edge, within easy reach for dogs, said Dr Harrison.

Early Murray magic boosts Aussie Open The Australian Open needed to put the emphasis back on the court, and Andy Murray achieved that with his round one win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

I can’t claim to be a career fan of Murray, firstly, I am Team Federer, and during his younger days, I thought of Murray as a dull but talented player saddled with the sporting burden of being British and all the overblown expectation that comes with it.

However, Murray has reinvented himself somewhat, at least in my eyes, after his career-threatening

hip issue.

Three years ago at Melbourne Park, Murray caught everyone by surprise by tearfully announcing he feared his illustrious career was coming to an end.

The hip injury that had plagued him since the summer of 2017 was debilitating and the only option left was resurfacing surgery that saw metal inserted into the joint.

No player had returned to the singles game after that operation - but Murray did later that year.

He’s now like a John Wayne-

type tennis figure, no longer at his best, the body not as it once was, but the mind and instincts are still as sharp as ever.

His five-set win over 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili illustrated all of Murray’s qualities and took the focus off Novak Djokovic and his ridiculous attempt to try to get an exemption to play which rightly failed after a long, drawn-out process.

Murray, at 34, has become a character, one willing to show a full range of emotion on court and I think most average sport fans find

that endearing.

For a man who has won three grand slams and has been a fivetime beaten finalist in Melbourne, it was refreshing to see him get so pumped up about winning an opening round contest.

Ranked 113th in the world, Murray has repeatedly said he remains confident of going deep into major tournaments once again.

To many tennis fans, including myself, that sounds like a pipe dream.

Encouraging performances towards the end of 2021 reinforced

that belief and he backed that up by reaching the final last week in Sydney, although he was beaten by Russian Aslan Karatsev.

Murray needed almost four hours to beat Basilashvili and there were moments after long rallies where he looked exhausted.

It undoubtedly contributed to his straight sets loss in the second round to unseeded Japanese player, Taro Daniel.

Regardless, it was refreshing to see such passion from a sportsman in an age where many are becoming so buttoned-up.

For the second year running, Johnsonville has finished runners-up in the Ewen Chatfield 50-over cricket competition.

Johnsonville finished as top qualifiers and earned the right to host Monday’s final at Alex Moore Park after a seven wicket win over Karori on Saturday, but were beaten by Eastern Suburbs by 19 runs.

Johnsonville won the toss and elected to bowl and restricted Eastern Suburbs to 246 all out in 49 overs.

Jed Wiggins top-scored for the

visitors with 64 while Lauchie Johns added 49 off 33 balls opening the innings.

It was the slow bowlers who pulled things back for Johnsonville.

Off spinner Jeremy Benton was economical, with his 10 overs going for just 36 while Raki Weerasundara took 3 for 48 from nine overs and Reece Edgecombe’s lone over earned him three wickets to close out the innings.

In reply, Johnsonville’s batsman could not produce the match-winning innings needed.

Devan Vishvaka (34), Gareth

Severin (34), Weerasundara (44) and Benton (49) all got starts but all failed to capitalise.

When Weerasundara was the fifth man dismissed on 170, the tail was exposed and Johnsonville were bowled out for 227.

Spinner Jacob Logan took 4 for 32 to be the best of the bowlers for Eastern Suburbs.

Raki says the team was pleased to restrict the visitors and felt confident chasing 247 for victory.

“We felt we had the line-up capable of winning but I sound like a broken record in the changing room saying we need

to get bigger individual contributions and that’s what hurt us on Monday.

“We believe in batting deep but we probably left our lower-order too much to do.”

Raki says the team should be proud of their efforts in white ball cricket.

“To make two finals out of two this season has been really good but I know the team is excited about defending our Pearce Cup title over the next couple of months.”

Johnsonville will host the opening two-day fixture against Upper Hutt on Saturday.

Johnsonville cricket captain Rakitha Weerasundara says his batsmen were unable to get the big score needed to secure the Ewen Chatfield 50-over final which they lost by 19 runs to Eastern Suburbs on Monday.

Johnsonville pair earn Taranaki triumph Johnsonville’s Naki Nehemia and Nairn MacGibbon held off a mid-game comeback from Allan Rickard and Hugh Andrews (Bannockburn) to win the Taranaki pairs event at Paritutu.

The men from the Capital took out the contest 24-11, having led 10-2 after nine ends.

But Rickard and Andrews took two shots on each of the next two ends and on the 13th claimed a four. After 15 ends, Nehemia and MacGibbon led just 12-11.

But consecutive threes, two singles and a four, inflated the final margin.

In the semifinals, Rickard and Andrews scored two shots on each of the last two ends to pip Kerry Walsh and Ian Franklin (Johnsonville) 17-16. Nehemia and MacGibbon also withstood a fightback in the their semi, before prevailing 20-17 over Ted Morris and David Nightingale (Glendowie).

Pirates earn team honour as swimming records tumble Karori’s Pirates Swim Club earned top points honours at the Wellington Long Course Championships over the weekend.

Swimmers from around Wellington and New Zealand, travelled to the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre to compete at the Swimming Wellington for the championship for athletes aged 13-and-over.

As well as the team success for Pirates, individual Wellington records also fell for several swimmers from various clubs.

The weekend saw six athletes topple Wellington Records.

Four of them were from Capital Swim Club.

The first of the four was Hunter Lloyd.

Lloyd broke a 17-year-old record, previously held by John Gatfield.

Hunter swam the 13-year-olds 50m backstroke in 29.87 seconds.

Next from Capital was Lucas Knapp.

Similarly to Hunter, Lucas too broke a 17-year-old record in the 14-year-olds 200m freestyle.

Formerly held by Luke Fairbairn in a time of 2:01.55, Lucas went a 2:00.38 to earn his first Wellington record.

Capital was Lewis Clareburt.

Lewis Clareburt broke his own open Wellington record in the 100m butterfly.

His old time was 53.32 and on Sunday he swam a 53.16.

The final of the four recordbreaking Capital crew was Finn

Harland in the 50m freestyle.

Finn raced under Kyle Barnes’s 16-year-olds record of 24.50, going 24.14.

Eric Yuan of Porirua City Aquatics and Mitchell Heberley of Swimzone Racing are now holders of regional records.

Yuan, secured his record in the 13-year-olds 100m butterfly.

He managed a time of 1:00.33, breaking Pierce Collins’s 2018 record of 1:00.63.

It was this time that Collins went to win his national title while he was with Swimzone Racing.

Speaking of Swimzone, Mitchell Heberley displayed the strength of his club through his own 100m butterfly record.

In the 15-year-olds final, Mitchell swam a time of 58.42, breaking Cameron Jones’s record which had been standing for 10 years.
