A partnership between Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective and Hutt City Council has won a prestigious national award from Local Government New Zealand for their work to get food to people in need across Lower Hutt.

The Collective was awarded Local Government New Zealand’s Kainga Ora Homes and Communities Excellence Award for Social Wellbeing at an awards ceremony on 22 July, ahead of seven other outstanding council initiatives from across the country.

After coming together during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet an urgent need for food, community partners have created an enduring partnership that is improving food security and enabling people to thrive.

Attending the LGNZ Awards evening, Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says this recognition belongs to the unsung community heroes who have worked tirelessly to help struggling families across our city.

“I want to congratulate and thank everyone who has been involved in this initiative so far.

At a time when so many of our whanau have been feeling the pinch in the back pocket, the Kai Collective has been able to ensure that there is food on the table for our families and kids,” says Mayor Campbell Barry.

Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective co-initiator Julia Milne says the success of the collective is the result of an authentic

partnership between Council and community.

“That partnership places the values and the power of collaboration firmly at the heart of our work together. COVID-19 gave us the opportunity to innovate and work in new ways, and Hutt City Council empowered the community to lead which enabled us to imagine a greater kai resilient community together,” she says.

Stokes Valley Foodbank Coordinator Sharyn Horn says, “The collective gives us a safe and supported way to try new ways of providing food to the community.”

Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says the win “really celebrates what can be achieved when Council walks alongside community organisations in genuine partnership to direct services and support directly to people in times of crisis.”

Foodbank, Orongomai Marae, Stokes Valley Foodbank and Te Aroha Kai formed the Hutt Valley Emergency Kai Collective in a joint response to the food insecurity exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with Council, they pooled resources under a central hub to coordinate and distribute food to households across Te Awa Kairangi Lower Hutt.

Hutt City Council supported the co-ordination of the central hub

through its Community Funding for Recovery initiative. During Alert Levels 3 and 4 council vehicles were used to help with deliveries, with staff joining the effort to provide food and essential supplies to the community. Council continues to provide funding and actively support the collective.

Common Unity initially provided the co-ordination and Council fundholding function of the Collective and this has recently transferred to Kokiri Marae.

Hutt City wins Breakthrough Bike City Award Hutt City has won the Breakthrough Bike City Award, announced today by Big Street Bikers at the Local Government New Zealand conference in Palmerston North.

The win recognises the significant focus and number of cycle related initiatives underway across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt. It follows major investment by Hutt City Council and the Government with 93kms of cycleways and shared paths across the city.

Mayor Campbell Barry said it was an honour to receive the

award on behalf of the city, and that it signals Lower Hutt is on the right track with enabling cycling as a credible alternative mode of transport.

“We’re relatively early on in our journey to making our city easier to get around, including encouraging more cycling. It’s fantastic to have this progress recognised through this award.”

“Cycling in the Hutt is becoming more and more common, and we want to see it increase. Getting more people cycling through the city is key to addressing climate change,

creating healthier communities, and reducing congestion. This is a key focus and priority for the Council,” says Mayor Campbell Barry “We have some exciting developments on the go that will see more cycleways connecting our communities and providing attractive and safe alternatives for people to utilise and enjoy as they move about,” says Jo Miller Hutt City Council Chief Executive.

Hutt City Council has a network of nine major cycleways and shared paths currently being developed across Lower Hutt.

Work is to start next month on the Tupua Horo Nuku shared path (formerly the Eastern Bays shared path), which is a 4.4km walking and cycling path to be built along Marine Drive between Ngau Matau (Point Howard) and Eastbourne. Tupua Horo Nuku, was the name gifted to the project by local mana whenua Taranaki Whanui.

Opera singer Filipe Manu wins Lexus Song Quest Tenor singer Filipe Manu has been named as the winner of the 2022 Lexus Song Quest, Aotearoa's most prestigious opera competition.

The winner Filipe Manu and runner up Felicity Tomkins were announced live on stage on Saturday, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre, as well as adoring audiences from around the world who tuned into the livestream and the live radio broadcast.

Filipe has walked away with a life-changing immediate cash prize of $20,000, a study scholarship of $27,000, plus economy international travel up to the value of $3,000.

Manu says he has a long association with Lexus Song Quest.

“The first time I went to Lexus Song Quest, I was wearing a Warriors jersey and a snapback - I had no idea what the competition was!

“This year was my third time competing, and last night was a

combination of hard work and my persistence over the past few years.

“Lexus Song Quest is such an important competition for young singers, and I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout this experience.”

Head Judge, internationally acclaimed bass baritone and previous Lexus Song Quest winner, Teddy Tahu Rhodes said he has been very impressed with the high standard of all five finalists.

“The talent of these young singers at the Grand Final Gala this weekend was exceptional and they all deserved their place in the Grand Final Gala of the Lexus Song Quest.

Filipe performed incredibly and I’m proud to name him the winner for 2022. But this is just the first step in the journey of all five finalists and we are all excited to see where each of these singers' careers will take them.”

Runner-up Felicity Tomkins has won an immediate cash prize of $10,000 and a study scholarship of $10,000.

An additional $15,000 scholarship was awarded by the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation to Emmanuel Fonoti-Fuimaono, a prize for the singer who showed exceptional potential.

“The grand final gala was a night filled with exceptional musical talent, and I know the future of New Zealand’s opera scene is in very talented hands,” said Neeraj Lala, Chief Executive Officer of Lexus New Zealand.

“Congratulations to Filipe who was amazing on the night, but also to the other exceptional finalists who have a bright future ahead of them.”

The prestigious competition began in 1956 and was back this year after a four-year hiatus due to Covid-19.

The next Lexus Song Quest will take place in 2024.

Water main replacement for Wainuiomata Town Centre upgrade During work on the Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade one of the old asbestos-cement (A/C) water pipes (common in the 1970s and estimated to last 50 years and which are no longer in use) was found to be leaking due to the compaction work underway prior to the installation of new paving.

Water have agreed that the renewal of the water pipe will be incorporated into the Town Centre Upgrade with work starting on 29 July 2022.

Doing the renewal now, rather than later will cause less overall disruption to businesses and residents in the area and will enable us to finish the work in a shorter timeframe than would otherwise be

expected. As per the Chief Executive’s delegated authority these works will now be incorporated into this work programme for the Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade.

This renewal will increase the reliability and resilience of the water main infrastructure, ensuring fewer disruptions for businesses

Both parties are working at speed to design and re-programme the project after this increase in scope.

This will mean an extension to the project of between four to six weeks. Wellington Water is currently working with JFC (the lead contractor on the Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade) on an up-

dated work schedule.

The efforts will be updated on the Wainuiomata Town Centre Upgrade project page on the Hutt City Council website with the new work schedule when it has been confirmed, including maps to easily demonstrate the re-programmed stages and the locations of each work site.

Ulalei’s Fuesina young guns have taken a share of top spot after grinding out a 31-27 victory over Avalon Rugby Netball Club on Saturday.

Fuesina management were pleased to have a full complement. “It’s that time of year with illnesses on top of COVID so it was great to have the whole squad there,” says co-coach Eleanor McLeod. “Saw some lovely combinations through court and it was pleasing to see the girls playing right to the buzzer in an intense game.” The young guns had come from behind to even the score at half time. The experienced coach-players were only brought on in the final minutes of the last quarter to push ahead and secure the win. Fuesina now have share at the top of the Senior 2 table with 3 games to go, Ulalei Laga’ali also enjoyed another comfortable 45-27 win against Stokes Valley Rugby placing them in the top four of their grade. “Our team are starting to find their straps knowing each other’s strengths and playing as a team. We even put together some

straight-line plays down the court which impressed our supporters,” says captain Lee Beazley. “And its great having young Mahinarangi Gillies in the team to help grow her experience and confidence.”

With three games left in Round 2, Fuesina, Laga'ali and the unbeaten Moso'oi hope to secure top 4 spots to play in the finals rounds.

s 1 large onion Onion, roughly chopped s 3 tbsp mild curry paste s 400g can chopped tomatoes s 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder s 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger s 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and chopped s 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed s 30g pack fresh coriander, leaves chopped s Rice

1. Put 1 roughly chopped large onion, 3 tbsp mild curry paste, a 400g can chopped tomatoes, 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder, 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger and 1 chopped yellow pepper into the slow cooker pot with a third of a can of water and stir well.

2. Add 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed, and push them under all the other ingredients so that they are completely submerged. Cover with the lid and chill in the fridge overnight.

3. The next day, cook on Low for 6 hrs until the chicken and vegetables are really tender.

4. Stir in the the chopped leaves of 30g coriander just

GARDENING THIS WEEK Wet feet: By Wally Richards Recently I have been asked why some plants (and in particular citrus trees) are loosing leaves and look like dying?

The problem is root roots and any plants, shrubs or trees that can not have their roots wet for any length of time will likely die unless some remedial action is taken during wet times..

In a few cases I have been told that a citrus tree has been happy where it is for several years and now suddenly LW LV VX൵ HULQJ The reason is likely a change in the À RZ RI UDLQ ZDWHU ZKLFK KDV PDGH the root zone much wetter than in the past.

Maybe a shed was build nearby, maybe a concrete path or drive was laid which has changed the course of water and made an area wetter that in the past.

We will talk about citrus though there are a number of other plants which are not happy with wet feet.

Citrus need to be planted on very free draining soil and one way to ensure this is to make a mound of soil about 30cm tall and plant into the mound.

One of the locations I used to live at was so wet in winter that it was a lake a foot deep .

Initially I planted in the back yard some specimens that would take up the excessive water one of which was a twisted willow.

To grow my citrus trees I cut 200 litre plastic drums in half and made some large drainage holes in the base and on the sides near the base.

I then partly buried the container into the soil.

This was to help stabilize the tree in wind so they did not blow over.

Well what happened is the roots found their way out through the holes in the bottom/sides and the citrus UHDOO\ WRRN R൵ In winter they were sitting in a lake of water happy as Larry with a good part of their root system above the water.

This could be a method you could use if you have a very wet section.

There is another advantage to this and that is if you move house you

Yellow leaves and leaf drop are a good indication it might be wet under foot.

There is an easy way to help over come the wet and allow the soil to dry out quicker.

Take a spade and just beyond the drip line and dig a trench about one and a half spades deep.

7KLV DOORZV WKH ZDWHU WR À RZ LQWR the ditch and quickly evaporate with sun and wind.

A big problem this time of the year is mulches over gardens and around plants.

Mulches are for keeping moisture trapped in the dry times.

In wet times they are deadly.

So if you have bark gardens, weedmat or other covers over the soil for moisture retention you need to keep an eye on the plants growing there.

If they are starting to look poorly then you may be best to remove the mulch and let the soil breathe.

You can help speed up the recovery of any plants suffering from wet feet by spraying the foliage with Perkfection at the 7 mil rate.

A month later at the 5 mil rate this will help the plant generate new roots and overcome root rots.

Winter time is also a hard time for indoor plants and losses can occur if the growing medium is too wet.

House plants do not need much water at this time and if they are sitting in a saucer that is full of water you may have a problem.

There is a simple test you can use to determine how wet or dry a container plant is.

Lift the container and if it feels very light then it needs a small drink.

If heavy forget it and check a week later.

There can be a problem also where the mix has become so dry that when you water it does not wet the mix but À RZV RXW WKH GUDLQDJH KROHV The plant gets only a little drink but not enough.

To overcome this add some dish washing liquid to a container of warm water and water the soapy mix over the growing medium.

This breaks the surface tension and allows the soapy water to penetrate.

Next time you water the water will stay there and not run out.

Another way of doing this in summer (not now) is to plunge the container into a tub of water and watch it bubble.

When it stops bubbling it is soaked thoroughly and you lift to drain.

Watering is an art which takes a lot of thought to get it right all the time.

Metlink welcomes cheap fare extension Metlink has welcomed the government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of January 2023.

The extension was announced by Transport Minister Michael Wood on 17 July as part of a package to reduce “cost of living pressures”.

Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain said half price fares had increased patronage on Metlink’s train, bus and ferry services across the Wellington region.

“Even though our services are being stretched by seasonal sickness and Covid cases among drivers, as well as the ongoing driver shortage, Metlink is ready to extend the fare reductions,” Ms Gain said.

Half price fares were implemented

by Metlink on 1 April for a threemonth trial which the government extended to 31 August in its May budget.

“Metlink and its service operators can easily continue half price fares for

all passengers through the Christmas, New Year period, and school summer holidays,” Ms Gain said.

“The extension will also give us more time to implement the government’s Community Connect scheme.”

The scheme permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card holders by 50 percent from 1 February 2023.

NZSO presents an Extravaganza in August The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform a selection of the most exciting and beautiful works of the baroque era in a seven-date tour in August.

Extravaganza features works by 17th Century baroque masters Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Pietro Locatelli and Jean-Baptiste Lully, groundbreaking composer Claude Bablon and Romantic era violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini.

Directed by NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen and featuring NZSO Assistant Concertmaster and First Violinist Yuka Eguchi, Extravaganza is performed in Wellington, Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Christchurch, Nelson and Blenheim.

“I am thrilled to be playing two solo caprices by Paganini in the upcoming Extravaganza concert tour. I am sure audiences will enjoy the synergy between Locatelli and Paganini,” Eguchi says.

Italian composer and musician Locatelli is considered one of the first virtuoso violinists, who extended what the instrument could do. Extravaganza highlights Locatelli’s technical flair with two short pieces of music, known as caprices, from

his Art of the Violin.

Inspired by Locatelli, the great 18th and 19th Century violinist Paganini wrote 24 Caprices for Solo Violin.

Among Italian-born French composer Lully’s many achievements, he was a major composer of comédie-ballet, a genre which fused a traditional comedic play with large chunks of music and dance. Extravaganza features several works from Lully, including his best-known Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, with text by his good friend and frequent collaborator, the great French playwright Moliére.

Fellow Frenchman Charpentier, who also worked with Moliére, was considered the most important French composer of his generation. Extravaganza features several of his works, including the revered Te Deum.

The concert opens with a groundbreaking timpani work by Claude Bablon, written for the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV. It is one of the first pieces of music written for the timpani drum as a solo instrument and in Extravaganza it will be performed by NZSO Section Principal Timpani Laurence Reese.

Tone-deaf NZR losing touch with reality New Zealand Rugby (NZR) clearly cannot handle the heat which comes from the All Blacks’ poor on-field performances.

I’d suggest NZR’s PR efforts have been worse than anything the All Blacks have produced in this Ian Foster-era.

The ignorance and arrogance of cancelling the Sunday morning press call (without Foster’s input, apparently) have been discussed and rightly mocked and All Blacks media manager Jo Malcolm ap-

peared to fall on her sword midweek, confirming she made the decision to cancel the traditional Sunday morning press conference after a test.

I doubt she made the decision alone.

NZR continue to do themselves, the All Blacks’ team and Foster no favours with their out of touch approach to the media.

NZR continues to build walls to keep the media out and they’re creating a vacuum which can only

be filled by speculation of all kinds from people in the sports media who are sick of being mistreated.

NZR needs to understand the sports media is there to cover rugby, not serve it.

NZR have no right to control the narrative from journalists and if they continue to have an adversarial relationship with the sports media as a whole, then they can have no complaints when things become toxic.

NZR need to have more respect

for the job the media does.

That means they must gain a collective thick skin, and accept the good and the bad, written and spoken, about the current state of the game in New Zealand.

Their media approach by NZR has proven to be utterly tone-deaf and the dis-interest in the All Blacks from the average fan is partly being caused by the holierthan-thou take NZR currently has towards media relations.

NZR have not done Foster or Sam

Cane any favours in their bullish approach.

Silence will only make all involved more unpopular.

It’s my belief the top brass of NZR have little respect for the rugby intelligence of the average New Zealander on the topic of rugby.

Yes, we are a passionate bunch of fans with high expectations of the All Blacks but the vast majority know good rugby from bad and are far from the fools those at the top of NZR clearly think they are.

Since Mark “Fozzie” Foster left Upper Hutt at the beginning of the year to return to Wainuiomata, the fixture between the two clubs is always highlighted on the calendar as it’s a combination of excitement and rivalry. Mark was on the winning end of the reverse fixture earlier in the season when the sides met at Richard Prouse and it was equally exciting on the weekend as the two sides met at Maidstone Park. Fired off from kick off led by captain and former Upper Hutt player Josh Hinton, Wainuiomata dominated the opening half an hour but were just missing a goal.

That changed however in the 32nd minute as Adam Faulkner buried his chance from inside the box to

put Wainuiomata 1-0 up and that is how it remained at the end of the first half. Upper Hutt came out firing looking for the equaliser but things went from bad to worse as they went down to 10 men. Referee Mark Whitehead showing Ali Nazari his marching orders for dissent in the 71st minute. Cheered on by the always vocal Wainuiomata faithful that had taken over the famous Maidstone Park balcony, the men in Green and Black looked for that decisive second goal and in the 83rd minute, they found it through Baxter King. Wild celebrations followed as Baxter jumped into the arms of Fozzie and Andrew Olivier, currently serving a suspension, led the balcony into

In the masters games, The Undertakers had a hard fought 1-1 draw away to Upper Hutt and the OC’s unfortunately went down 3-1 against Tawa. Pasifika had a highly anticipated top of the table clash against Eastbourne. A goal to man of the match Krishna Pillay helped Pasifika to remain undefeated with a 1-1 draw. With a game in hand on Eastbourne and the gap only two points between the sides, Pasifika are not out of the title race just yet.

Sunday saw the Wildcats travel to Alex Moore to face North Wellington. With six players out injured and one out with COVID, it was another tough weekend for the ladies which saw a number of

new and old faces returning to the side. Phillipa Skeet and Alisha Butterfield returning after almost two years out and Nerissa Mair making her football debut. The ladies sadly lost 4-1 but for a side short on players and coming off the back of a heavy defeat, it was a good performance from them all.
