Karori art exhibition setting high standards Continued from page 1. She didn’t follow a conventional path into a career as an artist though, being denied the formal training she craved when she left school. In the post-war shadow of the Great Depression, an offer from a major commercial art firm was, for her father, a nobrainer. “You’ve got a job!” But she attended art classes
at Wellington Technical College with fine tutors including John Drawbridge, Fred Ellis and Paul Olds. She then painted and exhibited watercolour landscapes and portraits specialising in children, while raising a family of four. Later in life Vivian spent twenty years moving between Wellington a nd London,
where her talents were soon recognised. She exhibited and immersed herself in the creative life of the city and Europe generally. She has a clear idea of what she is going to be looking at as a judge. “The composition, the shapes and colour. Those two elements need to balance well”. Then comes, says Vivian,
the unusual, the original, the interesting. “But the first two things have to be there for the painting to succeed.”
Karori Art and Craft’s annual art exhibition runs from Friday June 28 from 11am-7pm then 11am-5pm on Saturday June 29 and Sunday June 30. It includes a wide range of paintings, photographs and print-making.
Award winners recognised On Friday June 21, the twelve names of those who had been recognised with Absolutely Positively Wellington Awards (APWs) were announced.
Six of these people come from the circulation area covered by the Independent Herald. It is a privilege to bring to you some information about
these inspiring and generoushearted local people and their contributions to our communities, virtually all their work being done in a voluntary
capacity over countless hours. On behalf of everyone, we say a heartfelt thank you to them all.
Years of work behind community award Newly-re-elected as president of the Highland Park Progressive Association (HPPA), Greg Hyland’s Absolutely Positively Wellington award citation mentions his six years of community work for that group and volunteer work with many others. Of note are Greg’s efforts to conserve the local Fort Buckley historical site, a fortification built in 1885 to protect Wellington Harbour. Greg says the goal is to one day have replica 64 pounder guns back in the Fort Buckley site to bring history alive again. Greg was also a prime mover in setting up and leading the Wellington West Community Patrol
in 2015 and getting out to patrol the streets ever since. He has built and maintained local community networks and contributed to Wadestown’s resilience plans. G reg is not a f ra id to get his hands dirty where necessary and he helps clear drains, trim vegetation, reporting graffiti and many other community issues to the City. He says his next project is to work with the Wadestown Community to discuss the future options for a new Wadestown Community Centre He was also awarded a WCC Safety in the City Award for his work immediately following the Northern, Takapu, Ward councillor Malcolm Sparrow at left with APW winner 2016 earthquake. Generous donations recogised Susan Price has been awarded an Absolutely Positively Wellington award after making headlines earlier this year. She gifted Chevening, a luxury apartment block at 90 Salamanca Road, Kelburn, to Heritage New Zealand. The landmark property was lovingly restored after the-then eighteen-year-old Susan asked her parents to buy it, despite its neglected state, in 1979. Chevening is a rare example of a 1929 apartment building and is listed as a Category 2 heritage building.. by well-known local architect, Llewellyn Williams, who also planned the Embassy Theatre. This has not been Susan’s only donation. She has given her library of 20th Century children’s books, currently numbering 27,000 titles, to the National Library of New Zealand to be used as a research collection of quality writing for children. She has also been a trustee of the Randell Cottage Writers Trust which provides accommodation for New Zealand and French writers. The cottage, in Thorndon, was built by her great-great-grandfather William Randell 150 years ago.
Accolade for Grenada Village couple Last week Bruce and Dawn Patterson from Grenada Village were two of the twelve people who received a 2019 Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Award from the Wellington City Council. Their award was a joint one. Bruce has served on the Grenada Village Community Association committee for 27 years, nearly all that time as chairman while Dawn has been on the committee for 28 years. Their involvement and contribution to community activities has been extensive as they have both striven to improve the amenities and services of the village and to strongly advocate for the community’s interests. Bruce has led many significant projects for the betterment of Grenada Village. For 26 years he has also been the author of the Village News, the Grenada Village newsletter and he has chaired the Seton Nossiter Park working group since 1994. Dawn’s contribution to community activities has also been
comprehensive. She has administered the Grenada Village community hall and tennis courts since the early 1990s and is the convener of the Grenada Village Playgroup. For the past 27 years she has organised the annual Grenada Village children’s Christmas Party and the popular community Christmas Carols and she also runs the annual Neighbours’ Day Community Picnic. In 2015, in the New Year’s Honours, Bruce and Dawn individually received the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community. Asked how they felt about receiving this latest accolade, Bruce said: “To receive such an award recognising our contribution to the community is a great honour for us and is very special. “It is very satisfying working on behalf of your community and we hope that our efforts have contributed towards Grenada Village being an even better place to live.”

Call for volunteers Newlands Community House runs several groups at the local community centre, including the food bank and the Friday seniors’ lunch. They also do considerable outreach work with elderly people. New people are needed on their committee, and the group is particularly keen to get volunteers who can take on the work of applying for grants or acting as treasurer. Fireworks The Matariki Sky Show fireworks display will take place on the waterfront on Saturday June 29 between 6.30–6.40pm. If the weather fails us, or Matariki the whale decides to pay another visit, the postponement date is Sunday June 30 at the same time. There will also be stalls along the waterfront offering art, homeware, clothing and accessories and gift items. To check the event in the case of bad weather (or whales) go to Facebook.
Yellow bikes stay Wellington City Council has extended the licence for Onzo to operate their ‘dockless’ bike hire system until the end of 2020. A council spokesperson says the popularity of the bikes for short trips shows there is a demand for more transport options. “Over 110,000 trips were recorded during the six-month trial and feedback shows that most people use the bikes because they are fast and convenient. The bikes have increased access to cycling for many who do not have a bike.
Afternoon trains back to normal Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor has been following up on disrupted rail services and has announced that Johnsonville PM peak services returned to the normal timetable yesterday following disruptions caused by driver shortages and carriage maintenance issues. He says the AM peak services are expected to return to the normal timetable in August 2019.

inbrief news Roundabout lights The Paremata roundabout is to be the first in Wellington to get metered traffic lights installed. From July 1, the lights will stagger the entry of northbound traffic for some 15-30 seconds before the roundabout, balancing the flow of vehicles through it. That will initially occur between 4pm and 6pm on weekdays, although the lights will only be triggered once the state highway southbound or Paremata Park and Ride queues reach a certain length. Then the flow of northbound traffic will be staggered so vehicles travelling in other directions can enter the roundabout safely, including drivers attempting to exit Paremata Railway Station Park and Ride.
Voting changes Justice Minister Andrew Little says that at next year’s general election, voters will be able to enrol on election day and that ballot boxes will be placed in supermarkets and malls. He says that nearly half of voters are now voting before election day and they are able both to enrol and vote. “It’s only fair that people who vote on election day have the same right to enrol as those casting an early vote,” he says. “It’s important that ballot boxes are placed where people are going about their normal business and can therefore accommodate voting more easily into their busy lives,” he adds.
Honouring the forgotten Barbara Mulligan of Karori is also an APW award winner. It was Barbara who in November 2016 instigated a project to mark the impact on Wellington of the 1918 influenza pandemic and some of those who died in November and December that year. She organised the cleaning of the gravesites in Karori Cemetery of some of the 740 who died between October and December 1918. At least 50 volunteers were involved in the clean-up, which took place from 2016 to 2018. And earlier this year, on Friday March 8, International Women’s Day, she began offering a Heroines and Housewives tour of Karori Cemetery, featuring interesting Wellington women, some with important public roles as well as some with “ordinary but interesting” lives.

Little support for development in northern Wellington areas This week Wellington City Councillors are working on Planning for Growth, creating a direction for the city’s future growth based on feedback during the city-wide consultation process. Amongst the 1372 submissions that resulted, 250 were
from high school students. The council’s summary reports little support for a new suburb in Ohariu Valley or extending into Horokiwi, Takapu Valley or Owhiro Bay. People are reported as thinking the best balance for growth is to increase density in and
around existing suburban centres and the inner-city. This is to do with keeping Wellington compact, and people as safe as possible from natural hazards. Wellingtonians are reported as having very strong views about keeping cars off the road
to reduce carbon emissions. The downside for some was the impact inner-city growth could have on our pre-1930s character areas, although many thought there could be a way to protect the really special places while allowing for change in others.

“Noted throughout the world” Sheikh Khaled Said of the Newlands Al Ameen Mosque is one of three of Wellington’s Muslim leaders who last week shared an Absolutely Positively Wellington award. There were words of high praise for them, and for a fourth, Ibrahim Omer, the chair of ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum, who was also separately given an award. Wellington’s Mayor spoke these words: “The Muslim community’s reaction to the Christchurch shootings, as epitomised by its leadership, provided an example of understanding and harmony that was noted throughout the world.” The citation points out that emotions were raw, but throughout the country the reaction of the Muslim community leadership provided a shining example of unity and understanding, rather than finger pointing. Sheikh Khaled Said, in his daily life, works as a software engineer for Whanau Tahi, which provides software for the Ministry of Health. ‘’I wear my western clothes to the office and I wear my robes to the Mosque,” he says, adding that he gives a public sermon every Friday at 1pm at Al-Ameen at 64 Kenmore Street. “People of all faiths or no faith are most welcome,” he says. Sheikh Khaled won the joint award for leadership along with Tahir Nawaz, resident of the International Muslim Association NZ and Imam Nizam ul Haq Thanvi of the Kilbirnie mosque. Top honour for outstanding performance On Friday night at the annual Ryman Awards in Auckland, the clinical manager for the Malvina Major Retirement Village, Albie Calope, won the organisation’s top Australasian award. Chief operations officer Barbara Reynen-Rose says Albie won the Kevin Hickman award, “not only for doing an outstanding job for his residents and team, but for being humble, hardworking and kind at the same time”. She says the award is presented each year to the team member who best exemplifies excellence in care and leadership, while managing to be empathetic and kind. Albie was chosen from all staff in Ryman NZ and Australia and Barbara says this is
a huge honour for him and the village. And he was the first New Zealand Ryman staff member to be recognised in this way. The award is named for Kevin Hickman, one of the t wo fou nder s of Ry m a n Healthcare. Albie thanked everyone who supported him in his success, including his wife, his team at the village, village manager Lynne Peirse and regional manager Jenny Thiele. It was Jenny who had whispered to him, at his first Ryman conference in Wellington three years ago: ‘You will be up on that stage one day Albie’. “And here I am,’’ said Albie, adding that he saw it as an absolute privilege to work for this best of companies.

Petitioning MPs for bush kindys A group of pre-schoolers, led by eight-year-old Kannika Smith from Wellington, on Tuesday presented a petition to Parliament. There were over 5000 signatures in favour of a new full-time licence for education outdoors for pre-schoolers in New Zealand.
Those involved argue that Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres shouldn’t face unnecessary barriers to set up full-time outdoor-based preschools which help to improve the mental health and overall well-being of tamariki.
A submission has already been presented to the Education Ministerial Advisory Group (MAG), requesting that a new nature based licence for ECE is introduced. This would enable outdoor kindergartens, otherwise known
as Bush or Nature Kindergartens, to start in New Zealand like the popular forest kindergartens in Europe and Scandinavia. Nature Kindergartens, without traditional walls, operate mainly in the bush or local parks, reserves or beaches. No matter the
weather or the season, children spend most of their time outdoors learning and playing in nature. Children dress appropriately for the weather and some form of shelter is always available, especially from extreme weather or adverse conditions.

FREE skylight report/assessments of your existing skylight/s Skylight Specialists have been specialising in skylights for 25+ years. We have yet to come across a brand/make/type or configuration of skylight that we do not know everything about. Skylight Specialists is LBP (Government approved licensed building and roofing practitioners) , with 30+ years in the building industry and employ a highly skilled team which consists of trade qualified glaziers, roofers and builders. When we come and assess your skylight/s we will provide you with a free, no obligation
quotation. We will also provide you with a detailed report including photos that will include our findings and recommendations whether it be for general maintenance, repairs or replacement. At this time of year everyone is concerned about insulation of their homes, trying to keep warm and retain heat. Unfortunately, skylights are often overlooked, even when they can be sometimes the main factor of heat loss. Older skylights are sometimes full-time venting without the homeowner even being
aware of this, which is no different from leaving a window open 24/7. Others are only single glazed or just plastic. By upgrading to double glazing you can retain up to 70% more of your heat. A lot of skylights we come across is simple a piece of glass glued to the roof structure of your home – This is by far inadequate for many reasons including thermal properties and condensation issues as the moisture has no where to go but get absorbed by the structure of your home. We will assess the entire skylight including the flashings (roof
flashings are what connects the skylight to your roof and keeps all watertight). This will cover if you have adequate condensation channels, drainage, seals, condition of flashings, thermal properties and of course longevity of the skylight/s and the surrounding areas. So if you’d like to let a little more light into your home and want the job done well, contact them for a FREE ASSESSMENT on 04 938 0721 or 027 595 4448.

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. We ask local garden club members: ‘What is your top gardening advice for this time of year?’
Danae Heinz, President, Kaitoki “Now is exactly the right time to plant trees. And we need more trees.”
Helen Cross, Johnsonville “Keep things cut back and tied. And keep the weeds down!”
Mollie Downham, Churton Park “Keep out of the cold! It all should be done by now.”
Pat Lakeman, Ngaio “It’s the best time for dividing perennials. And for moving things that are in the wrong place.”
Rosemary Guerin, Wadestown “Stay out of the garden while the ground’s wet you’ll only compress the soil.”
Trudy Flynn, Kaiwharawhara “Just sit and enjoy what you’ve got. Take the time....”
EYE ON CRIME In Broadmeadows a house in Rajkot Terrace (lower end) was broken into via a forced ranchslider door at the rear of the property. The occupants were away at the time and a courier parcel left on the doorstep would indicate that there was no one at home. A large screen plasma TV and remote control were stolen. Other portable items of value in the house were not taken. In Khandallah a medical centre in Dekka Street was broken into. The monitored
alarm was activated just after 6am and responded to by security. Access was gained via a forced sliding glass door. A vacuum cleaner was the only item reported stolen. The drug cabinet area was not breached. In Ngaio a red Holden Barina hatchback parked overnight in a carport on the property of a house in Heke Street was broken into. The rear boot window was smashed to gain access. Nothing was stolen. A house in Bombay Street was entered
through a forced rear door. Several rooms were searched and a cell phone and an Ipad2 were stolen from the kitchen. An X box 360, a DVD player and blue tooth speaker were taken from the lounge and a New Zealand passport and three foreign passports were taken from the master bedroom. From another bedroom an allin-one computer was stolen. Although not reported at the time it was later discovered that car keys were also missing from the house. Two days later the occupiers of the house called Police because someone had entered their vehicle which was parked in front of their house. It is believed that the intruder had used the vehicle keys taken in the burglary two days earlier. Fortunately vehicle had an immobiliser and the intervention by the owners caused the intruder to flee the scene. An attempt was made to break into a house in Armitage Street by jemmying a window at the front of the house. This window is shielded from view from the
street by a high hedge. The wooden window frame has been split but no entry gained and nothing was stolen. In Churton Park a burglary occurred at house in Furlong Crescent while the occupants were away attending a funeral. There was an alarm in the house but it was not set. Entry was first attempted by trying to smash a window in a garden room but the safety glass withstood the attempt. A laundry window was tried next. It was successfully smashed and entry gained. Jewellery is known to have been stolen. In Karori a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback, parked locked on the road overnight in Campbell Street was stolen. It is thought that a spare vehicle key may have been left in a bag inside the car, together with a laptop bag, shirts and a rain jacket. In Northland an unsuccessful attempt was made to enter a house in Mataroa Avenue. The intruder tried to force an aluminium door but only succeeded in jamming it to the point where it became unmovable. The attempt was abandoned.

A warning about ranchsliders This week, our Eye on Crime reporter points out that two leading incidents involve entry through forced glass sliding/ ranchslider doors. This follows others in previous reports. The one in Rajkot Terrace, Broadmeadows, is, he says, the third burglary in that area in the past couple of months. He adds that ranchsliders can be a tempt-
ing target because of the wide expanse of glass. “But they can in fact be quite secure if a top lockable bolt is used to support the normal inside catch and even more secure if a piece of wood is placed in the lower channel. “That effectively stops the door moving,” he adds.

A new road layout has been introduced to deter queue-jumpers at Hawkestone Street. The Hawkestone Street intersection with State Highway 1 was regularly used by some morning commuters as a detour to skip ahead of queues when travelling south on State Highway 1. This caused delays when they attempted to merge back in with the flow of SH1 traffic. A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson says the new layout was introduced in March to address these safety and congestion issues. “Travel times have been one to two minutes faster in the peak weekday flow from Murphy Street to The Terrace Tunnel/off-ramp,” he says. “That’s a big saving over just a few hundred metres and it’s purely because there are fewer vehicles re-entering State Highway 1 from the Hawkestone Street southbound on-ramp.” Safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Hawkestone Street has also been improved by the new layout. U p t o 8 9 ve h i c l e s w e r e u s i n g the short cut during the 7-9am peak. In the last four weeks of monitoring, this has dropped to an average of five. After a two-month monitoring period, which confirmed these positive results, NZTA and Wellington City Council will carry out two to three weeks of work on a permanent layout. That will also include a new pedestrian path across Hawkestone Street to make it safer and easier to cross. The coupon parks on Hawkestone Street will be removed and replaced with one coupon carpark opposite the bus stop on Hawkestone Street. Other car parks are being investigated as potential sites on Tinakori Road.

Garden Club celebrates 25 years By Glenise Dreaver
The 25th anniversary of the Johnsonville Garden Club, held at the Johnsonville Community Centre on Friday evening, began with a minute’s silence as members who had passed on during the year were remembered. Three cakes were made and iced for the occasion, all with a garden theme. President Danae Heinz pointed out that three were needed to ensure there was a slice for each of the 100-plus members who attended. Foundation members came to the front at this stage and Mina Thomas and Margaret O’Connor, both life members, cut the first cake.
That was a formal garden, with beautifully crafted icing flowers, the second was a cottage garden and the third featured a rural country garden. The ceremony was followed by a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday dear JGC” and then three heartfelt cheers. The foundation members were, appropriately, all given exquisitely-crafted posies, though Margaret O’Connor was presented with a spectacular bouquet. The Johnsonville Garden Club meets in the community centre every third Friday of the month with several exceptions that are notified in the monthly newsletter, jvillegarden@ gmail.com.

An event run by zero waste campaigners The Kiwi Bottle Drive and sponsored by Wellington City Council will be run out of Aro Valley Community Centre from 11am-2pm. It aims to advocate for a bottle refund scheme by giving out 10c20c per plastic bottle, can and other beverage containers. Campaign coordinator Holly Dove says they aim to recycle more than 20,000 beverage containers on the day. They also hope people will collect litter from beaches and community spaces and she adds it will be a great fundraising opportunity for community groups.

DURABILITY WITH GERMAN ENGINEERING Our uPVC windows and doors will easily last 40 years or more in New Zealand. uPVC frames and uPVC windows do not need painting or special maintenance. uPVC is resistant to dirt and environmental conditions and cannot be deformed by moisture or temperature changes, like timber and aluminium joinery. Additionally the uPVC itself will never rot, rust or corrode. uPVC windows and doors can be easily cleaned with soapy water. Some periodic maintenance of hinges and moving parts is recommended. uPVC’s thermal performance easily ex-
ceeds that of thermally broken aluminium joinery at the same or better price. uPVC as a material naturally has a high thermal resistance. With engineered air chambers and 23mm thick double-glazing, it becomes one of the best window insulation solutions available. Our uPVC products are designed and engineered in Germany and are affordable compared to competitors. They are steel reinforced for the highest degree of strength and security, providing ultimate durability and resistance to New Zealand conditions.

Food for thought at Highland Park AGM By Glenise Dreaver
The annual general meeting of the Highland Park Progressive Association saw some thoughtprovoking comments about pressures of growth as they affect both city – and government – policies. They were led by guest speakers WWC councillor Diane Calvert and Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor. The meeting turnout last Sunday afternoon at the Wadestown Community Centre was clearly affected by the afternoon’s ongoing downpours and incoming president
Greg Hyland was elected in absentia before he arrived, with his flight from Christchurch delayed. After the business session, Greg O’ Connor spoke briefly then Diane. She dealt first with the fact the centre in which the meeting was being held had, with the recent closure of the Wadestown crèche, just lost its principal tenant. The council therefore needs to look at the use and viability of the old building. “It’s long overdue for some work.” She said that funding for a new centre could be used to add to the

Wadestown library space, adding that the Community Fair, held each February-March, could be an ideal opportunity for conversations about that. She went on to discuss the council’s declaration of a climate emergency as dealing with something that could best be described as a “slow motion earthquake“. A clear plan and a timeline were needed she said. The Let’s Get Wellington Moving planning, also to come before WCC this week, was also dealt with. She said that discussions two years ago about light rail could now be overtaken by investigations of trackless rail, “though there are still a lot of light rail enthusiasts”. Greg at this stage pointed out that the future had to be in getting people into public transport. “There can be no apology for that debate,” he said, adding that seeing the young people who had brought concerns about environmental issues to Parliament recently made him realise they were the ones who did “get it”. Diane told the meeting that with the bus problems over the last year, they know that more people are travelling to the city in cars. “We need to increase the capacity and reliability of public transport and we can’t wait for a new mass transit system.”
Emergency declared Wellington City Council’s strategy committee meeting last Thursday June 20 declared an ecological and climate emergency as it adopts a blueprint for becoming a zero carbon city. Councillors also adopted Te Atakura – First to Zero, a blueprint for becoming a Zero Carbon Capital by 2050. That had gone out for consultation earlier this year, meaning the declaration will be supported by an action plan. Te Atakura attracted some 1250 submissions, with strong support for the council to act on climate change . More than nine of 10 submitters agreed the city must become net carbon zero
by 2050. Four out of five want the target reached earlier and there was a lot of support for better active and public transport; nature and green space; and a zero-emissions fleet. The council is also to look at investing in a fund to protect infrastructure from sea level rise, planting more trees to absorb increased rainfall and better buying policies to buy more green goods such as electric vehicles. Its will sit within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The aim is that NEMA will work across central government and with local government, emergency services, communities, iwi, lifeline utilities and business to create an emergency management system providing an integrated response to, and recovery from, emergencies. The Government’s 2019’s Wellbeing
Budget includes $4.5million of funding to establish NEMA, and to improve the resilience of emergency response capabilities. That will include 24/7 monitoring, alerting and warning capability and the resilience of the National Crisis Management Centre. The Minister of Civil Defence Kris Faafoi says NEMA was recommended following of a review of New Zealand’s civil defence system. This investment follows last year’s funding boost for the establishment of the Emergency Management Assistance Team, previously called fly-in teams, together with other initiatives aimed at improving the emergency management system.

Aroha Quartet and Diedre Irons in Waikanae
The Waikanae Music Society will welcome back the Aroha String Quartet for a concert on Sunday 14 July. The quartet is firmly established as one of this country’s finest chamber ensembles. Haihong Liu and Zhongxian Jin are original members of this quartet that was founded in 2004. Cellist Robert Ibell joined in 2009 and more recently Konstanze Artmann has joined as second violinist. Known for their musicality and multicultural innovation, the quartet presents programmes ranging from classical to avant-garde to traditional Chinese music. As well as regular tours throughout New Zealand, they have travelled
overseas to participate in festivals in Austria and Australia, and to China to give concerts and masterclasses. Committed educators, they run an annual week-long chamber music course in Wellington and an equivalent week-long course in China. For this concert they will be joined by the amazing Diedre Irons, a pianist who is much loved and admired by New Zealand audiences. The programme opens with Mozart’s ‘Hunt’ Quartet, so nicknamed because of its opening theme, a jaunty 6/8 ‘horn-call’. The Mozart, cheerful and elegant, is followed by “Unbound” – an attractive and atmospheric piece
written by New Zealand composer Brigid Bisley. The second part of the concert is devoted to one of the best-loved chamber music works of all time, Brahms’ F minor Piano Quintet. With its demanding and impressive writing for piano it will make a wonderful showcase for the rare talents of pianist Diedre Irons. The concert is in the Waikanae Memorial Hall at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be purchased at Waikanae New World or at Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach. Enquiries about online sales can be made on 04 293 4025 or visit www. waikanaemusic.org.nz

Forty years of setting the world to rights By Glenise Dreaver
The Karori Drop In Centre celebrated its fortieth birthday at the local Community Centre on Friday. Like everything the group does it was a relatively low-key affair, but three long-standing and still active members from the very early days were given the honour of cutting the cake. Ninety-two year-old secretary Pat Usher was one, having been there “pretty well from the start”. President Margaret West, who is giving Pat a run for her money in the age stakes and length of service was also recognised as was treasurer Fay Bastion. The group meets every Thursday and Friday between 10.30am -1.30pm (bar statutory holidays) and provides a morning tea and
lunch for anyone one who wants to drop in for a chat and a cuppa. Before the group found a home in the community centre. It started at the vicarage of St John Church, now just a memory with the cleared site on the corner of Karori Road and Donald Street. Some volunteers began as young mothers. Now pensioners and grandmothers, they have continued with the weekly sessions which, says treasurer and long-standing volunteer Fay Bastion, always include great conversations with a wide variety of people.“We still put the world to rights.” Those attending broke with tradition on Friday, and rather than sorting out catering for a fancy lunch, dipped in to pay for a communal fish and chip meal.

Right Royal Friendship lunch It was a “Right Royal” occasion at the James Cook Hotel when the Johnsonville Friendship Club held its mid-winter lunch on Thursday June 20. The theme for the day brought
out many tiaras, glittering brooches and pearl necklaces, along with a fur stole or two and a tartan kilt. The court jesters provided entertainment and the groom in charge of the corgis rounded up
the diners – without help from the dogs. Nearly 40 Friendship Club members enjoyed a good lunch then turned their minds to a general knowledge quiz.
The mid-winter lunch replaced the normal monthly meeting for the club, which provides social activities, interesting speakers and outings for retired men and women in the Johnsonville area.
Anyone interested in finding out more is welcome to attend a monthly meeting as a visitor – email friendship.johnsonville@ gmail.com or phone Kathy on 938 4523.
Fifties vibe a winner on stage By Glenise Dreaver
Onslow College’s production organisers were in grave danger of having to turn audience members away during last week’s run of the school’s musical Guys and Dolls. An appreciative audience filled the hall each evening from Thursday until Saturday. The youthful vigour of the young cast, who channelled the nineteen fi fties vibe with great panache, saw them rewarded with loud applause, even the odd rebel yell. It’s only recently that the school moved to
annual productions rather than two-yearly and it is clear that the demand for it, and willingness to put in the extra work required, is definitely present. For next year, you’d be wise to book your tickets in advance. In a previous edition (Independent Herald June 13 p. 11) we featured the leads. Here we honour some of those who supported them, along with a representative of the chorus, Julia Given, who played Agatha, one of the missionary sisters.

HEALTH IS NOT VALUED TILL SICKNESS COMES. Thomnas Fuller
SINUS INFECTION (SINUSITIS) Have you ever had that really heavy feeling in your head, with pain, swelling and tenderness around your eyes and cheeks or forehead, a feeling of pressure building around your face? This could be a sinus infection or sinusitis. Sinusitis is a common condition and can occur after you’ve had a cold or flu, or with hay fever and with allergies. Symptoms include nasal congestion with the build-up of mucous, and thick nasal discharge, which may be yellowish or greenish in colour. There may also be post nasal drip with mucous dripping down the inside of the throat. Sometimes there can be a high temperature of 38C or above, and sinus headache. The sinuses are made up of several spaces or cavities in the skull, and when these become inflamed or infected then mucous is unable to drain away and sinusitis can be the result. The build-up of pressure in this area can then lead to headaches or pain, which can be quite severe. When sinusitis occurs in young children signs include irritability, difficulty feeding and breathing through the mouth and not the nose. Symptoms of sinus infection generally clear within a week to ten days and this is without the need of any antibiotic treatment. There are several reasons why this is the case. Firstly sinusitis is often caused by viruses which are not treated with antibiotics. Also it has been seen that when bacteria are the cause of the infection, antibiotics have not been found to be beneficial and that the
symptoms have gone and the condition has resolved even without the use of antibiotics. Avoiding antibiotics is the preferred situation to minimise the overuse of antibiotics and help prevent antibiotic resistance from occurring. However there are certain circumstances where your GP could prescribe antibiotics, e.g. extreme or severe pain, fever over 38.6 degrees Celsius, or signs of cellulitis, i.e. a skin infection such as a fast spreading hot red rash. Also you may need to visit your GP for antibiotics if the condition initially improves but then worsens and is prolonged. In some cases sinusitis can recur and last longer than 3 months. This is known as chronic sinusitis and may need a referral from your GP to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist There are things that you can do at home that will help sinusitis such as getting plenty of rest and drinking plenty of fluid. Extra fluid helps to thin the mucous so that it can drain away more easily. Gently blowing the nose, one nostril at a time is also effective. Holding a warm flannel or compress over the inflamed area can help to ease the pain and this can be done for a few minutes several times a day. Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water may give some relief but care must be taken to avoid scalding and this is especially important with young children and is therefore not encouraged. Applying a salt water solution to the nostrils can also help to ease the congestion. Homemade salt solutions can be used or they can be purchased from the pharmacy.
For all your pharmaceutical needs see our friendly teams at
A humidifier can also be helpful, as is stopping smoking and avoiding known allergy triggers. Good hand hygiene can help to keep the spread of infection and prevent reinfection from occurring. There are medicines available to use for sinusitis which includes pain relief such as paracetamol or anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. Your Self Care pharmacist can also give you advice on decongestants that can be used to help by drying up the mucous and unblocking the nose. These are available as nasal sprays or drops and it is very important to use these for a few days only, after 3 to 5 days their usage should be stopped. If they are used continuously for long periods of time they can cause a condition known as rebound congestion, which is more congestion, adding to the problem. Decongestants are also available as tablets, some are only available with a GP’s prescription while others can be purchased from the pharmacy. Care needs to be taken to see if pain relief and anti-inflammatory drugs have been included in the same product when buying these over the counter. Discuss this with your Self Care pharmacist to find out. Other medication available from your pharmacist are antihistamines, which can be used to help dry up the nasal secretions especially if allergies are the cause of the symptoms. Your Self Care Pharmacist can provide you with Self Care fact cards for more information on coughs, colds and flu and how to protect yourself this winter.

Historic hotel has international flavour Beef flavoured sausages, Pre-cooked & Saveloy
There is no denying the international flavours being served up in the “1860” restaurant at The Greytown Hotel. With the head chef from Austria, his understudy Chile, and the owner/operators a Kiwi-Irish combo, the food is top shelf. All dishes are prepared from start to finish in their kitchen, from baking bread to pasta making to curing meats incorporating the techniques and cooking styles the chefs have learnt during their travels. You
can expect a truly international experience, says owner Ursula Murphy. The 1860 restaurant draws its name from the year the historic hotel was built, and is considered one of New Zealand’s oldest surviving hotels, another good reason to visit Greytown. While you are there, check out some of the many other excellent places to dine. If vegan tickles your fancy, The Offering has a new vegan and vegetarian menu, and looks delicious! A popular choice
at the moment is the vegan garbage fries. Staying with plant-based food, Forest Food Organics is all the rage and has just been given a big boost on national TV. Owned by James and Suzie Cameron, (yes the movie man), the power couple were recently the subject of a Sunday show documentary. The plant-based organic food store sells organic fresh vegetables coming directly from the Cameron Family Farm in South Wairarapa.

with Jacob Page
Folau’s latest public folly Israel Folau launching a GoFundMe account for the public to donate money in order to help him fight his legal battles is one of the most self-absorbed things I’ve seen from a professional athlete. Folau, who had his Rugby Australia contract terminated earlier this year after he sent divisive tweets that included those of a homophobic nature, is aiming to raise AU$3.5milliom from the page.
This coming from a man, who has already earned millions of dollars from his time in rugby league, Aussie Rules and now rugby. The sad reality is that many who share his views or religious sentiment will donate. Such pages are often created to give Joe and Jill Average a chance to raise funds to fight an illness or for life opportunities that require funding like overseas sports trips.
By creating his own page, Folau has confirmed what many people already believed, that his deluded attitude and inability to self analyse his own behaviour has no limits. Folau need only look in the mirror to discover the man who got him into this mess and also the man who can get him out. It will be interesting to see if Folau plays professional sport again. Certainly the talent is there but
any club, franchise or organisation who takes him on after these comments risks a serious backlash from the general public and any contract offered to him could be seen as an endorsement of his comments. The Folau case is also a good reminder for everyone to be wary of what they post on social media. Heat of the moment posts (I’ve had my share) can come back to haunt people, in the public
eye or not, at a later date where comments may not necessarily age well. Folau would be best served to leave his divisive comments at home and try to make a positive impact on the world using his beliefs. It’s easier to divide than unify and Folau is taking the easier road. I won’t be donating to his cause though he has my thoughts and prayers in spades.
Young NWFC team creates carnage By Grant Stephen
While the rest and rotation policy used by the All Blacks had its critics, there were no such grumbles from the North Wellington FC faithful on Saturday when their side took on Wellington United in the Men’s Central League. A more youthful New World Newlands North Wellington side created absolute carnage against the team from Newtown Park. They dished out a 12-1 hiding which stretched across all 90 minutes of the match. The only competition that Wellington United won on the day was collecting yellow cards, and this was topped off with two red cards in the fifty fifth and ninetieth minutes. Frustration and ill-discipline were Wellington United’s worst enemies and no one can deny that they have had a miserable season to date with 10 losses, two draws and a negative 75 goal difference. For Norths, Nathan Simes scored a well-deserved hat trick and could have had more. Jesse Randall played a useful cameo late in the match for a brace, and the usual suspects

humdinger and was locked up at one-all for most of the match. In the end match fitness and superior firepower up front won the day for Nor ths as they cruised away in the final 10 minutes for a 4-1 win. Norths remain top of the table for
another week at least with Seatoun and Lower Hutt millimetres behind them in the two up, two down competition. All three sides are vying for the two spots on offer in the Premier League in 2020. In other matches in the Central
League, Waterside Karori had no trouble in dispatching Wairarapa 6-1, Miramar won another close encounter with Lower Hutt 3-2, Napier City Rovers travelled to beat Stop Out 3-1 and Wests also went on the road to beat Wellington Olympic 3-1.
