Karori artist Veronica Young is finding her groove with a paintbrush again after seven years away.

She is one of 150 artists who have been selected to represent the best of New Zealand art at the NZ Art Show over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

“I took a break when my two children were young and have just got back into it now that my youngest daughter has started school.

“I needed some inspiration so I joined a class in Khandallah run by Morag Stokes and she introduced me to new styles and during lockdown I started exploring landscapes.

Karori artist selected for NZ Art Show Continued from page 1.

“It’s been really freeing and uplifting,” she says. “It’s a passion of mine but I haven’t indulged in it and it’s really important to my well-being.”

Veronica has exhibited at the NZ Art Show in the past, this will be the first time her landscapes will be on show.

“It’s a fairly new subject matter for me.

“During lockdown last year I was attracted to painting landscapes, “I guess as a way of experiencing the freedom of roaming in the natural environment.

“I feel Karori is endlessly inspiring, with great views.

“I describe my work as being inspired by the land but not specifically about one particular place.”

Viewers may be familiar with the misty skies which permeate her work.

“Karori is often shrouded in mist and the disappearing landscape and indistinct horizons have influenced my paintings.”

Veronica says while she does have a dedicated studio in her home where she paints, often she moves from room to room chasing the sun throughout her day.

Veronica says when she first started as an artist it “was scary to put my work out there for

the public” but she had come to accept it over time.

“A painting can be so personal and naturally as humans, we want to be liked.

“I don’t think this is a new me,” she says. “It’s just a fresh start after seven years.

The NZ Art Show will be on at TSB Arena from June 4 to 6.

Newlands College students claim national film honour

A group of Newlands College students has been named the best school team in New Zealand at the 48 Hour Film Festival.

The Howie Mandel Fan Club comprised of Eve Bayliss, Jessica Pollock, Dean Leppan, Rose Aldridge, Cheron Fourie and Tim Johnston earned the honour over the weekend.

This is a first for Newlands College and has netted the team a $1000 cash prize as well as the acclaim of being judged best in their category by an esteemed judging panel including the likes of Hollywood heavy-hitters Elijah Woods and Cliff Curtis.

Filmmakers have just one weekend to make a short film.

They don’t know what genre they will be shooting until the start of the competition.

All creativity: writing, shooting, editing and adding a musical soundtrack, must occur within the 48 hour window beginning Friday evening at 7 pm and ending Sunday

Five Newlands Volunteer firefighters have raised more than $13,000 for charity by racing up the Sky Tower.

The group did it in full uniform to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

“I think I was the one who was a little panicked at times and the rest of the group kept things calm and focussed.”

Eve says the result has motivated all of them to return stronger next year.

Newlands firefighters sweat it out for a cause

The overall challenge raised more than $1.3 million.

Following an incident at a match between Old Boys University RFC (OBU) and Marist St Pats RFC (MSP) Premier Men’s teams on May 8th, a meeting was held on Thursday evening 20th May at the offices of the Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU). Representatives from the two clubs, along with representatives from the Wellington Rugby Referees Association (WRRA) and the WRFU, all met to resolve any issues.

The parties were all pleased with the meeting and express regret and dismay at the events that occurred towards the end of the match. There was a united view that such incidents are completely contrary to the values of the clubs, the union and of our wonderful game.

Both MSP and OBU have enjoyed a long-standing fierce on-field rivalry against a background of equally long-standing mutual respect and friendship.

Grants awarded for clubs

Newlands Fire Fighters raised more than $13.000 through the Sky Tower Challenge over the weekend.

Karori netball and hockey benefited from the latest NZCT grants for community groups.

The Karori Hockey Club received $843 for managers’ bags while the Karori Netball Club was granted $3,380 for court hire and a coach salary.

Glenside residents push Council for assistance

Glenside residents continue to push for improvements to their roads with Wellington City Council.

The Glenside Progressive Association made a submission for the Long Term Plan relating to safe walking along Middleton Road rural.

Their concern is Wellington City Council has over-engineered a combined cycling and walking solution for Middleton Road, which makes it unaffordable.

The current proposal pushes a cycle/walking solution out to 2028.

They have been making

submissions for safe walking along Middleton Road for more than 20 years.

They have asked Wellington City Council to review their proposal with a view to alternative options, which combine a walkway with a cycling route similar to that at Te Marua and around Puatahanaui Inlet.

Wellington City Council traffic counts show that there are 125 cyclists per day during the week and 145 in the

weekend.

There are no pedestrian counts.

Meanwhile, the Association has undertaken several onsite meetings with Council about Glenside Road matters.

Claire Bibby and Barry Blackett attended two on-site meetings with the Wellington City Council Transport Infrastructure team to discuss Glenside Road issues with a number of projects to tidy up the area in the works.

Consultation opens on Te Ngakau Civic Precinct Wellington City Council is inviting Wellingtonians to share their views on a draft framework vision and objectives which will guide the development of Wellington’s city centre, Te NgƗkau Civic Precinct.

“The redevelopment of Te NgƗkau Civic Precinct will be complex and challenging, but at the same time is an exciting opportunity,” says Mayor Andy Foster. “This is our chance to create a framework to guide redevelopment so it is a far more resilient, better designed, more active precinct than in the past.

Penny Roy, who grew up in Karori, is now a teacher by trade but has been recognised by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for the role she played in mentoring officers at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy in 2018 and 2019.

Captain Roy, a Reservist with the New Zealand Army, was presented with a Chief of Defence Force Commendation by Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Kevin Short at a ceremony in Wellington last Friday.

Brigid finds book inspiration close to home

North Wellington author Brigid Feehan has leaned on her own experiences to create her latest book The Life and Times of Eddie McGrath.

The novel is so rooted in Wellington, as is Brigid, who was raised in Johnsonville, studying law at Victoria University of Wellingtion, and still lives in the Wellington suburbs.

In the book, Eddie wins a national competition where she can spend a day with her local MP and give a speech in Parliament (where she’ll meet the Prime Minister) but Eddie hates the idea!

When her Dad is injured in a workplace accident he sets his sights on getting better for Eddie’s day with the PM. Eddie sets her sights on going through with it.

Brigid says a book based on a bookworm appealed to her.

“I thought it would be fun to take a bookworm whose only ambition is to read more books and throw uncomfortable challenges at them. “”I had the (real) image in my mind of a Year 8 girl sitting on the steps outside her classroom at going home time.

North Wellington author Brigid Feehan’s latest book The Life and Times of Eddie McGrath is a book about bookworms pushing their limits.

“The book she was reading was as big as her head.”

She says writing came in spurts as free time became available.

“No routine really.

“I just opened the laptop on the kitchen table whenever I could.

“It depended what else was going on—sometimes evenings, sometimes mornings.

“It was good to try and do some every day because then you stayed in the plot, but that didn’t always happen.”

While Eddie loves to read in her tunnel, it’s a little different for Brigid.

“I like reading in the tops of double-decker buses.”

“I’m not aiming at anyone in particular. I hope that bookworms find it, and that the not so bookwormy find it.”

Stella Star, Brigid’s first novel, won the Tom Fitzgibbon Award and was included in the Storylines List of Notable Books in 2006. A sequel, Maybe Stella, was published in 2007.

Her great-great-grandmother Kathleen Mary Nolan (1880-1920) graduated as BSc from Glasgow University in 1903. She was one of the first group of women admitted there to study science.

She was my husband’s grandmother. Sarah now has Kathleen’s academic hood, admittedly a bit the worse for wear. It travelled to New Zealand in 1952 with her daughter Columba McBride.

There will be arborists from NZARB on site to help with the climbing, and all equipment will be provided.

If people feel like staying on the ground, they can join in some nature play activities with Kiwi Conservation Club.

People might even be able to take home a tree from Kerernj Discovery that helps feed our Kerernj friends.

This event is run by trained tree

climber volunteers and supported by the New Zealand Arboricultural Association.

Safety is an absolutel priority for the arborist volunteers - kids will wear a special safety harness and with the help of our NZ ARB arborist experts will get to climb a tree as high as they are comfortable.

In the lead up to Arbor Day, people can also take part in KCC’s ‘Be with a tree’ campaign and vote for Aotearoa’s favourite tree and spend some time with the special trees within the community.

People can celebrate the trees in Wellington by celebrating Arbor Day on June 5.

Wellington’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress in Karori will be open for public inspection again on Queen’s Birthday, Monday 7th June.

The World War Two coastal battery first opened to the public in 1989, and will be accessible between 10am and 4pm.

On Queen’s Birthday people are invited to self-guide themselves through the tunnels and gun emplacements.

The walk usually takes about one hour and there will also be a number of guided tours during the day.

Dunne delights friendship club May’s guest speaker at the Johnsonville Friendship Club was recently retired local MP Peter Dunne.

Peter spent 33 years in Parliament from 1984 to 2017, representing the Labour Party and a succession of minor centrist parties. He was then the Leader of United First from 2000 to 2017. He was well known as a hard-working MP who was regularly to be seen amongst the electorate.

When he retired, he says he was worried that after so long as an MP he would be at a loss to know what to do with himself.

But he very quickly found this not to be so. He now does what he wants to do, not what he has to do.

Peter is associated with helping to promote the welfare of folk suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Also, he takes an active interest in Primary Care, particularly in relation to the imminent restructuring of New Zealand’s District Health Boards.

His last job was with what is now Fire and Emergency NZ. He was amazed to find that 85% of firefighters are volunteers!

Wellington’s Southern Landfill Transfer Station is to close temporarily on weekdays while the roof replacement is being carried out – but it will be open as usual at weekends.

Work on the replacement starts Monday 14 June and is expected to last for at least five weeks. The closure will impact domestic customers dropping off general waste, hazardous waste and green waste, but commercial waste operators will not be affected.

The Tip Shop, Recycle Centre and Capital Compost will remain open.

Manager, Waste Operations, Emily Taylor-Hall says the work is important for safety reasons, and urges people to plan ahead and be patient.

“This will cause some disruption, as the Transfer Station being closed during the week means weekends will be busy and we’re expecting long queues and delays. Our advice to customers is to try and get rid of their waste ahead of the work starting, and not to come unless it’s absolutely essential.”

Alternative disposal facilities are available at Seaview Transfer Station, Silverstream Landfill or Spicer Landfill in Porirua.

There is no ideal time to close the Transfer Station, but the works have been timed as best they can to minimise the impact on customers, says Emily.

“There is historically low demand for the Transfer Station during June and July. Initially, we considered keeping the Transfer Station open during the works, but unfortunately, this proved too risky from a health and safety perspective and significantly increased the cost of the project.

“The Transfer Station is about 25 years old and is an important part of the Southern Landfill infrastructure. There is significant corrosion on the roof, and while there’s no immediate risk, it’s important to replace it now before it deteriorates any further.”

The roof is around 60 metres long by 8 metres wide, and provides shelter to users and minimises wind-blown litter.

Metlink celebrates more women working in rail Metlink’s rail operator Transdev Wellington is seeing a growing diversity within the team, with women staff numbers soaring higher than the Australasian average in the rail industry.

Only 10 years ago, the stats for women working in the rail industry were dire, but things are changing in our region. According to Transdev Wellington’s internal annual survey, the spread of staff shifted from 69% men and 31% women in 2016, to 65% men and 35% women in 2020.

Metlink Operations Manager, Melissa Anderson says these results are well above the wider Australasian rail industry rate which sits at 27% women, according to the latest Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Gender Diversity Report 2019.

“It’s really affirming to see that more women of all ages are seeking roles and jobs in an industry previously dominated by men.”

“What this means for young people across ages and genders is that it’s a very possible career opportunity to work in public transport, and they can play a valuable part in driving climate action. Jobs in rail support a more sustainable region, because we’re contributing to getting people out of cars and into more carbon-friendly forms of transport,” says Melissa.

Transdev Wellington General Manager of People and Culture, Emma MacRae, says the number of women working at Transdev

Wellington is currently rising by 1% per year, and this number is expected to grow.

“In 2020, we saw the number of women locomotive engineers rise to an all-time high of 11%, up from 7.8% in 2019, and across roles women team leaders increased from 33% to 38%.”

The increasing number of women recruits is supported by a high retention rate.

“We are so proud of the diverse gender, age, and culture spread across all our staff.

At Transdev Wellington we support and celebrate a space where people feel safe, valued and respected regardless of age, gender identity, sexual orientation or cultural background,” says Emma.

“Diversity is supported not only by our recruitment initiatives but also by our wider Transdev whƗnau, with many of the new women recruits saying how well supported they are by their colleagues and team leaders. We are also fortunate to have the incredible support from the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, who advocate for women in rail across our whole industry.”

In addition, the survey captured that almost half of the Transdev Wellington workforce identifies as an ethnic group other than European, with the next biggest group being MƗRri or Pacific Islander at 19.5%, 7.8% identify as Indian and 1.7% as other Asian.

“Having this diversity is so important for us as a team and to delivering a service that is balanced and inclusive,” adds Emma.

Innovating Streets – making safer streets for people Wellington City Council has secured $1 million from the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to design four Innovating Streets trial projects within the community.

Wellington City’s Innovating Streets pilots are four of 70 throughout the country with the purpose of creating safer, healthier and more people-friendly towns and cities.

These projects will be done using tactical urbanism and are about co-designing quick, low-cost, scalable improvements that help to create more vibrant, people-friendly spaces in our neighbourhoods. This could be through pilots or pop-ups that can become permanent based on community feedback.

Innovating Streets is about changing the way we consult with the community – instead of long discussions over plans and town hall meetings. It encourages us to engage early in a co-design, test and trial solutions in place and at a life-size scale.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Playing with the basic’s of life: By Wally Richards Genetic engineering, GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) is when the DNA has been modified in some way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination.

A controversial subject and one that many of us only have a little bit of understanding of.

Terms such as splicing, shedding, RNA, gene transfer are mentioned and a number of concerns are raised when it comes to GE crops.

Here in New Zealand there appears to be a large public reluctance to having any of our food chain genetically engineered and grown in NZ. MAF protects our country by ensuring any experimental crops are secure in quarantine like facilities to prevent any shedding to our agriculture crops. (Shedding as I understand it is modified gene/s that are absorbed by and can affect other plants or species).

That is like coming into near contact with someone that has a disease and you catch it.

The first generation of Monsanto crops followed the pattern. Genes were injected into plants.

Like a vaccine, its purpose was protection; in this case, protection against Monsantoâ™s own herbicide poison, Roundup.

What was discovered was: The overall health of the crops, then the people and animals’ health was reduced when consuming the crops.

The nutritive value of the crops

diminished; super-weeds on the GMO farms flourished.

The Monsanto genes in the plants drifted/shed.

They were found in non-GMO plants, in soil bacteria, and human gut bacteria.

Bit like dandruff, flakes of genes were absorbed by other plants (in this case weeds) and conferred the properties of the GM to the weeds.

So the original money-making concept was to make food crops immune to Roundup so the crops could be sprayed with the herbicide to kill the competing weeds without damaging the crop.

Great idea and they did it without considering the consequences.

The crops shed the genetic Roundup-resistant material either through direct contact or through the soil to the weeds which became what we now call Super Weeds.

This was the first noticed problem but what are the others?

Five sets of ethical concerns have been raised about GM crops: - Potential harm to human and animal health.

- Potential damage to the environment.

- Negative impact on traditional farming practice.

- Excessive corporate dominance and the unnaturalness of the technology.

I asked the question of the two supermarket chains a few years ago about how much GE food did they sell to us?

They stated that they did not knowingly sell any GE food stuffs but had no knowledge of what imported food stuffs may contain that had genetic material from GMO crops incorporated into them.

Crops such as soya and corn in America and elsewhere have a large percentage of their crops that are GE. To illustrate 85 percent of the world’s cotton crops are genetically modified to be what is termed Roundup Ready so they can be sprayed with Roundup while growing to control weeds.

A study I read some time ago from a University analysed every cotton type product available and found most contained Roundup.

(This included feminine and medical cotton products: and we wonder now days about cervical cancer)?

I also remember reading about a farmer in the States whom in winter placed cobs of maize out on an old tree stump for the hungry squirrels to eat.

He would watch them from his kitchen window filling their tummies and taking some kernels away for snacks later.

One day he thought “what if I put out some GMO cobs what would happen?”

He obtained some GE corn and waited for a couple of days, not feeding the squirrels to ensure they were hungry.

Then he placed a couple of the GE cobs on the stump and went back home to watch.

Is produce genetically modified without us knowing?

The squirrels soon came and they sniffed the cobs, looked at them but would not eat them.

Here is an interesting thought; Many critics of GMO crops fail to realise (or are afraid to criticise) the possible dangers of a GMO vaccine.

There was one trial done sometime ago (November 2007) using ferrets that I read about and the ferrets all had adverse side effects such as inflammation and hepatitis.

Here is an interesting aspect: we have found out and know that GE plants shed their new GMO’s on to non modified plants and weeds

giving the other plants the same or similar properties as the modified ones.

Could the same apply to humans, animals and other life forms?

Positive and adverse effects could be shed through contact?

Apparently from what I have read this will happen.

WOUND CARE For many of us, wounds are a common part of everyday life, with accidents leading to cuts and scratches, grazes, lacerations, blisters and sometimes burns.

These can happen no matter how careful we are or how organised our homes or workplaces can be. A wound occurs when a physical injury to the body breaks the skin or a mucous membrane.

The body responds immediately and begins repairing the wound with the skin closing up and trying to return to normal as soon as possible. The time of repair may only be needed for a very short time and last for a matter of days or it may need to continue for weeks and months, depending on the type and size of the injury.

In the past many wounds have been “fixed” with a plaster, the multipurpose plastic dressing strip. These are fine for small scratches and cuts but there are now many more dressings available for the different types of wounds that can occur.

In the past it was believed that wounds should be kept dry but now it is recommended that to help a wound heal well it should be kept moist.

This is because a moist wound environment allows the skin cells to grow more quickly, thus healing and returning to normal in much less time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore the health of the tissue. With any wound once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline is appropriate to be used.

Next dry the area and apply the dressing.

However if the wound is unclean and is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed so that the wound does not become infected.

It is necessary in these cases to use an antiseptic to wash the area and remove unwanted particles and debris. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about which antiseptics are available and how to use them.

It is important to try and prevent infection

from occurring but if the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor regarding antibiotics.

Wounds caused by burns may occur due to sunlight, flames from fire, scalds, chemical or electrical sources. The affected area must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The use of ice is not recommended in these cases.

Burns can be superficial affecting only the top surface layer of skin or can be much more serious affecting many layers of tissues.

Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

There are a number of life style factors that can help with wound healing such as 1) diet 2) exercise 3) medication 4) dressing type 5) warmth. Your diet can affect the speed of the healing process.

Foods associated with wound healing are protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin A and zinc and a diet enriched with these components in your diet can enhance wound healing.

Regular exercise increases blood flow, improves general health and also speeds wound healing.

Medication that affects wound healing includes anti-inflammatory drugs as these can interfere with the body’s natural healing process and hamper the action of immune system cells. Talk to your pharmacist about your medication to see if any that you are prescribed will hinder wound healing.

Wounds that are dressed and kept warm heal faster. Dressings also need to be kept clean so change as necessary, usually not every day but maybe every few days depending on its condition.

See your Self Care pharmacist about the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or for your first aid kit. Also ask for the Pharmacy Self Care “Wound Care” card to take home and share with the family.

Ingrid tames Rotorua Marathon Mum of two and Johnsonville Olympic Harriers Club runner, Ingrid Cree added her name to the roll call of women’s Rotorua Marathon champions to clinch the biggest win of her career so far earlier this month.

The 38-year-old Wellingtonbased athlete finished third at last year’s event and improved on that performance, stopping the clock at 2:54:11.

“It is a dream come true to win such an iconic and historic marathon,” said Cree, who set a marathon personal best of 2:53:30 to place third in Christchurch last

month.

“I grew up in Ohope Beach and I remember doing school relays around the lake of 5km and 10km wondering how anyone could run a full marathon. It has always been an event I’ve admired. More recently, I knew it was an event I was capable of winning and to do so is an amazing and incredible feeling.”

Cree is largely self-coached but receives some guidance from husband Elliot.

She acknowledged it was a daunting challenge to run Rotorua only a few weeks after

completing the Christchurch Marathon.

But she timed her effort to perfection on the day.

“I paced the race a lot better today than I did last year. I had two great guys running at a similar pace to me and it was great to be able to chat with them in the first half of the race before I got really stuck into it in the second half.

“It was such a great feeling running down that finishing chute, although thank goodness there was no one behind me because I didn’t have much of a sprint finish left.”

Police and Council-operated CCTV gets results The partnership between Wellington Central Police and the Wellington City Council-run City Safety CCTV continues to yield significant results to prevent harm, apprehend offenders and promote a safer Wellington CBD. Sharp-eyed CCTV operators were behind the recent arrest of a man who had allegedly been targeting mailrooms in apartment buildings and stealing bikes from storage areas.

The watchful operators spotted the suspect acting suspiciously on a mountain bike (which was later found to be stolen) and alerted Police to his whereabouts.

The male was arrested and has been remanded in custody on a total of 14 burglary charges and multiple drug-related charges.

Acting Sergeant Sandy Cumpstone, Wellington Prevention Coordinator, says this is just one of many occurrences which highlights the fantastic partnership in place.

“The City Safety CCTV operators are both highly skilled and knowledgeable and are invaluable in helping to keep our citizens safe.

They are the unseen guardian angels of our city.

“We have weekly meetings with the operators to help ensure that they have their finger on the pulse in regards to who we are looking for and who is required to be arrested.

They also help us to identify locations of interest; whether it be for drug-dealing, disorder, vulnerable people or breaches of the liquor ban.

“They have a direct radio link

through to our frontline staff, and provide real-time direction to officers, which is especially helpful when an offender decides to flee from a crime scene.

Thanks to their assistance we are often able to prevent incidents from escalating, identify, locate and ultimately hold more offenders accountable for their actions.”

And it’s not just burglaries that the City Safety CCTV operators are assisting Police with.

Support from the operators have allowed Police to disrupt serious criminal offending including drug deals, serious assaults and firearms offences.

Last weekend, camera operators alerted Police to two drug deals and a wanted male on Courtenay Place.

As a result officers were able to make four swift arrests, and were able to seize methamphetamine, MDMA, cannabis, scales, a knife and $2,900 in cash.

The operators played an integral part in each arrest; from identifying the drug dealing in the first instance, to providing updated locations after one of the males fled on foot, to advising officers of possible escape routes after another male took off on a stolen bike.

“Our Pǀneke promise is all about keeping the city safe and it’s incredible to see the success of our partnership.

By pro-actively monitoring our public spaces through CCTV, our staff, supported by Police, directly contribute to a safer CBD” says Jonelle du Pont, Senior Safety Advisor at Wellington City Council.

Olympic Harriers runner Ingrid Cree won the Rotorua Marathon and clinched the biggest win of her career so far earlier this month.

Whitireia nurse overcomes challenges to thrive Shawnee Watson-Darbyshire always wanted to be a nurse, but when she left college in 2010 she felt like her dream was out of reach.

After withdrawing from study in 2011, nine years later Shawnee decided to give it another go and show her sevenyear-old son that it was possible to achieve your dreams.

She re-enrolled in the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing programme at Whitireia and is only weeks from graduating as an enrolled nurse.

“My turning point was my son telling me he wanted to work at the supermarket like Mum,” Shawnee says. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I want to encour-

age him to dream bigger and show him that he’s capable of anything.

“It was daunting going back to study but the support Whitireia provided has helped me get through it.”

Juggling study and raising her son has been a challenge for Shawnee, but she credits support from her family, her employer and Whitireia tutors for making it possible.

Shawnee has noticed a positive change this time around with her studies, both with herself and with the course.

“When I first enrolled I wasn’t prepared and couldn’t keep up,” she says.

“Now I’m not afraid to ask for help. The tutors are amazing,

they provide lots of resources and student support and help you learn the way you like to learn.

“I don’t learn from a book, it’s the lab classes, and handson learning that works for me.”

Shawnee is currently interviewing for jobs in nursing and is excited about putting her skills into action and working in the career she loves. She has a preference for working with elderly after the rewarding experiences she had on placement in Huntleigh rest home.

“Somet i mes I quest ion whether I have enough knowledge, but then when I’m out there I know I’ve got it and I’m ready,” Shawnee says.

Shawnee Watson-Darbyshire is now looking forward to her career in nursing.

Applicant: Porirua City Council Location: Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant, Pikarere Street, and the coastal marine area at Rukutane Point, Titahi Bay, Porirua Proposal: Wellington Water Limited (on behalf of Porirua City Council (PCC)) has applied to Greater Wellington for resource consent for discharges related to the continued operation of the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant (the treatment plant). The treatment plant takes wastewater from the residential and commercial areas of Porirua and the northern suburbs of Wellington. Consent is required for: ; Discharge permit for the discharge of a contaminant (odour) to air from the treatment plant ; Discharge permit for the discharge of treated and partially-treated wastewater to the coastal marine area off Rukutane Point from the operation of the treatment plant.

Odour is generated as the untreated wastewater enters the treatment plant, and within the milliscreen building at the treatment plant. The air discharge consent application proposes to continue current management practices that minimise odour.

The discharges from the treatment plant to the sea relate to the discharge of fully treated and disinfected (by ultraviolet light) wastewater, as well as intermittent discharges of partially treated wastewater until capacity upgrades are completed in June 2023. These intermittent discharges occur when heavy rain significantly increases the volume of wastewater in the system, beyond the capacity of the treatment plant.

NRL do their players no favours as sin-bins soar The NRL needs to tread carefully when it comes to their new tough stance on contact to the head during tackles.

Speculation is the NRL top brass are concerned they will be hit with a concussion lawsuit if the status quo remains.

However, the past fortnight, where players have been sinbinned or sent off for contact to

the head, has made some of the contests non competitive.

The science behind the move and the devastating long-term effects of concussions can’t be ignored, but for a long time the NRL and die-hard rugby league fans have held onto the extra physicality like a badge of honour.

I’ve often said over the years,

that I felt it was impossible to be sent off in NRL. The latest move is going a step too far for 2021.

The NRL is asking their players to alter their tackle techniques mid-season which is a tough and unfair ask.

Head knocks and concussions are nothing new. Why the NRL bosses chose two months into the

2021 season to finally take a hard line on it has yet to be clarified.

Fans should expect more games having teams disadvantaged by sin-bins and that is not what is best for the product.

Rugby’s product is often unwatchable now as referees use TV to hunt for foul play.

The NRL’s success as a product is their speed of play and simple

rules.

Players will take time to adjust to this new stance.

They will now have to aim lower to limit the risk of mistiming or miscalculating a hit.

It is bound to annoy the bluecollar fans.

For player health long-term, it is a good move, but how it’s been done, leaves a lot to be desired.

North Wellington earn high-scoring win

Round 8 of 18 in the Men’s Central Football League played out over the weekend and there were surprise results that continue to fuel debate over which teams will make the top three cut to go through to the National competition at the conclusion of the winter season.

North Wellington veteran supporter Dennis Mann, had a lot to be happy with at Petone Memorial Park on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Daughter Angela had provided a thermos of hot tea and this was a welcome accompaniment for father and daughter who enjoyed watching Norths 5-3 win over Petone. Dennis had hardly managed his first sip of Choysa when Max Batchelor scored the first of his three goals to put Norths on the board. A Petone own goal inside the box after 19 minutes only made things worse for the home team and it was 3 nil after 22 minutes when Batchelor beat his marker and the keeper for what turned out to be his best performance to date for North Wellington.

Norths owned the game for large periods of the match and looked the more composed and structured side without doubt. Their possession game was much more effective this week and they at last avoided giving the ball away much too easily. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though and Petone snuck one back on the stroke of half time to make it 3-1 going into the sheds. It was game-on 15 minutes into the second half when

Petone nabbed another to make it 3-2. Young Petone keeper Ethan Claridge should be nominated for a lifesaving award by somehow keeping out at least 4 strikes that would have been goals on any other day. The game was closer than it should have been thanks to Claridge but it wasn’t over yet. Batchelor earned a well-deserved hattrick to make it 4-2 but yet again Petone grabbed one back to make it 4-3 with Norths allowing them too much free movement through the middle of the

pitch. Batchelor had another dig late in the piece and this was blocked yet again by Claridge. Jesse Randall was there to clean up the scraps though and clinically pushed the ball through a now open goal to make it 5-3 in time for everyone to head off to watch the Nix at the stadium.

In other matches in the round, Waterside Karori had an impressive 1 nil win over high flying Western Suburbs. Wairarapa succumbed too easily in Masterton losing 4-1 to Lower Hutt and Wellington

Olympic had a not unexpected 4-0 win over Wainuiomata. Napier City Rovers hosted Miramar Rangers on Sunday but could not stop Miramar recording an impressive 4-1 win.

Miramar Rangers and Wellington Olympic are looking very cozy at the top of the ladder and are both on 22 points with Lower Hutt currently enjoying the all-important third spot on 16. Wainuiomata still have yet to register a point and Petone are in close company on 3 points. There’s a log jam in the middle though with

just 3 points separating the other five sides with North Wellington on 8 points and Western Suburbs holding fourth position on 11.

In the Men’s Premier League, North Wellington travelled to Upper Hutt where the home side was too strong and enjoyed a 2-0 win. In the Women’s Premier League, the Innkeeper North Wellington ladies enjoyed a significant 3-1 away win over Kapiti Coast United and sit on top of the table as a result of that victory.

Johnsonville outclassed by OBU

There’s no doubt Johnsonville’s premier rugby team have made big strides this season, but they were no match for Swindale Shield leaders Old Boys University.

Johnsonville lost 59-0 as OBU’s clinical play in the forwards and slick backline play proved too much at Helston Park.

OBU fullback Sam Reid managed 19 points including a try and seven conversions.

Blindside flanker Dominic Ropeti also crossed twice.

A positive for Johnsonville was their efficient work at the line out but the team could not match the physical nature of OBU or maintain possession for long enough periods of time.

Johnsonville will face the Wellington Axemen on Saturday before a key game against Tawa as they look to get back to winning ways.

Coach Jason Adamson says his team saw the level it took to be

heavyweights in the competition.

“They were very good across the park,” he says.

“Our guys kept trying to the end but we missed probably six chances to score points and that doesn’t help against a quality team.”

Jason says the next fortnight is a key period of the season.

“We want to get maximum points for this week and we want two wins in a row.

“The results will give us an idea of where we truly sit on the ladder compared to other teams.”
