Located on The Strand next to Hammer Hardware, the opening is set to be a big celebration with plenty of bargains and of course, a sausage sizzle. ZM’s Black Thunder will make an appearance too. Hospice shop finds a new home on The Strand Continued from Page 1. All funds from the hospice shops go straight back into the Te Omanga Hospice The store will be accepting donations for goods from now and throughout the opening party. They also provide a free pick up service if you’re not able to drop off your goods too. Te Omanga Shops are Hutt City only with their stores in Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Petone. The Wainuiomata store is its

fourth store to open, and the newest one, retail development manager Allister Wood says. “We had been looking for space and to open a store here for a long time,” he says. What sets Te Omanga Hospice Shops apart from others, he says, is that they pride themselves on vibrant presentation. “We pride ourselves on presentation and customer service. It’s about being friendly and welcoming.”

Alexandra Bruintjes will be a full-time staff member and she says she is looking forward to creating a fun vibe and getting to know the community. “Come and see our happy vibe,” she says. Of course, a second-hand store cannot operate on its own without passionate volunteers. “We have a wide range of people and ages from teenagers to 80-year-olds,” Allister says. Alexandra would love to see

some keen high school students help out over the holidays, she adds. “Some of the volunteers are very talented, I learn a lot from them,” she says. If you are interested in helping out and sparing some hours, pop in and say hello. But most importantly, drop into Te Omanga Hospice Shop for a party this Saturday. “There will be some great specials on the day.”

Oodles of dog lovers What could beat a day with dogs and good company? Waiwhetu resident Sandra Goedhart is a self-professed animal lover. Especially when it comes to her Cavoodles, Blaze and Dotti (and at the time of the interview, she was babysitting Scout). Sandra belongs to WOOF, a Wellington Oodles Owners Family, which is a group that encourages Oodle owners to meet, socialise and walk their dogs together. There are members from all over the Wellington region who do all sorts of walking tracks, beach walks and dog parks, all over the city, including in Wainuiomata. But they are especially looking forward to the opening of the Dog Park here in town. “We’re all totally mad with animals,” Sandra says. “The real magic moments are when we all get together and our dogs can just be free.” Often the group aim for environments where they can let their dogs run free, especially around water. “I just love seeing them running into the water and enjoying themselves. And

in a safe environment with no cars,” she adds. Anyone with an Oodle crossbreed, like cavoodles, westiepoos or boxerdoodles, can join the growing group. Wendy Jacobs began the group in 2016 with three people coming to the first meet up.

Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club Inc

Now, there are 693 members from around the Wellington region. “We offer support, friendship and have lots of fun,” she says. What makes Oodles special is that, unlike other breeds, they are hypoallergenic meaning they do not cause allergic reac-

tions due to fur, Sandra explains. If you have an Oodle, or are looking to get one, Sandra says come along to one of the meetups and network with other owners. To find out more about the group online go to their WOOF page.

Retirement home progressing Construction of the Wainuiomata Masonic Village Villas located on The Strand is starting and may, hopefully, be in a position to take the first deposits on villas early next year, a spokesperson says, from Masonic Village Villas. “Civil contractor JB Hughes have almost finished site works for the underground services

including power, water, street lighting facilities, telecommunications, sewerage and stormwater. “These are due to be tested before going live in the coming months. “ They will then commence concrete curbing work for stage one of the village roads. That work will start later this

month and should be completed in February-March next year. Eco-Slabs will be on site from this week for the same two to three months building the slabs (1989 square metres of floor space) for the 22 villas that will comprise stage one of the village. That work should be completed at the same time as the roading

works are finished and then the construction of the villas can get under way. “While we are hesitant to put too firm a date on it, we intend to release a sales plan in the near future and this will allow those of you interested in moving into Wainuiomata Masonic Village to make firm plans,” the spokesperson says.

Block Vandal spreads positivity with Lego mural Wait, is that spiderman, Batman and Wonderwoman all hanging out together? If you haven’t noticed by now, Lego Superheroes have begun to pop up on the cinder cylindrical blocks at the bottom of Wainuiomata Hill in Gracefield over two weeks ago. What makes this mural, and the process of creating it, unique is the anonymity that surrounds the art and artist. Instead, the artist is simply known as Block Vandal. “The anonymity is important because it keeps the focus on

our community and their input,” he says. Initially, it began with a basic Lego head appearing overnight. Now, there are nine lego heads spanning the many blocks. “I have been driving past the wall for a few years and realising the blocks look like Lego heads. Two weeks ago I finally decided to try the first one,” he says. Block Vandal is motivated by the community which is often how he crowd-sources what characters to add next. “This project is for our com-

munity. “Trying to inspire our tamariki using superhero figures and, hopefully, I am inspiring them to be positive members of our community.” Last week the mural was defaced which sent an outcry through the community. But Block Vandal was right back at it and fixed it the same day. Since the first Lego head, the mural has garnered a huge response from the community and the press, all making it a hotspot for a picture stop. “It was a little unexpected, but

I intend to make the most of the momentum and continue providing joy to our community.” “It’s special for me because I feel like I am activating a dead space,” Block Vandal says. Anyone who would like to support the material costs of the mural then please head down to the Wainuiomata Bottle-O and drop your donations off. “Shout out to Hayden and Ruth for the support!” You can follow the progress of the mural on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ block_vandal_/

Police were alerted to a car that rolled on Wainuiomata Road at around 2.50pm. Initial reports stated there were serious injuries. The incident closed the road for several hours.

inbrief news Good news for city Newly-released figures for the year to the end of September show that tourist numbers in Wellington are increasing, and they are spending nearly $2 billion a year here. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster also says GDP growth is above the national average, and the unemployment rate has dropped from 4.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Councillor Diane Calvert, who holds the Economic Development Portfolio, says that city merchants recorded an electronic card retail spend of $3.22 billion in the year to September 2019, up by 3.7 per cent. This was driven largely by more people eating out and an increase in spending in the automotive category like fuel, repairs and maintenance.

Late-night safety Last year’s late-night safe zone, Take 10, is back in Wellington’s entertainment district. WCC has funded a custom-built mobile unit with a medic and a volunteer area with a toilet and storage space. Outside it has lighting, heaters, music, a tarpaulin cover made for Wellington weather, two draft water taps to supply 500 litres of filtered water, and will deliver key messages from an LED screen. The safe and alcohol free environment has trained staff, able to help vulnerable people get home, provide water and charging stations, with wrap around services for support and wellbeing if needed. It is also supported by Police, the Health Promotion Agency, and Hospitality NZ.

Scooteroos meeting Scooteroos will be meeting this morning from 10.30am to 11.30am in the Community Hub Library. The meeting is an opportunity for those with mobility scooters, walking frames or sticks to network and socialise with others. Each meeting there is a guest speaker discussing an interesting relevant topic. Members are currently planning and advocating about creating safer footpaths for all. Come along and meet other like-minded individuals for a cup of tea and support.

Green thumbs for Positive Growth Thanks to Bunnings in Petone, Mighty Positive Growth have been gifted everything they need to set up their first vegetable garden last week. Mighty Positive Growth is a group of people who meet weekly on Wednesdays to nurture themselves and each other while breaking chains with gratitude. Their new vegetable garden will be another aspect of their day where they can connect with nature and learn new and valuable skills. “It is very humbling,” president of the group, Anneke Lilley says. “The garden means we can help provide food to the community who may not be able to afford to eat healthily. “It also gives us growth as we learn to grow our own food,” she says. The desire is for the garden to be for the community as much as themselves. “The skills we learn will also help us practise to be able to plant the rest of the property,” she adds. Bunnings Petone regularly does a community project every week

by going in and teaching new skills or setting up gardens just like this one. “We love to help the com-

munity and go out to check back on the work we have done,” a Bunnings spokesperson says. Mighty Positive Growth hopes

to use some of their new skills to build a lean-to where they will ideally raise seedlings which they will then plant in the garden.

Free marine workshops Free marine biosecurity and antifouling workshops for local boaties are being offered on December 14 and 15, 2019 at Seaview, Mana and Evans Bay marinas. Marine biosecurity coordination for the Top of the South Island, Peter Lawless, says boaties can learn how to get the best from their boat and reduce risks of spreading marine pests. “It’s a win-win opportunity. These three free workshops are being offered by the Top of

the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership in tandem with Altex Coatings Ltd,” he says. The drop-in sessions allow boaties to arrive any time up to half an hour before the end of each workshop. All sessions are at the travel lift where they will have a fouled vessel on display for practical demonstrations. Marine biosecurity experts will show you samples of marine pests and describe how they are spread. They will explain the new rules

for marine areas in Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough and for the marinas there. Altex paint representatives will answer all your questions on how to get the best from anti-fouling paints. “We are reaching out to Wellington, Mana, and Hutt Valley boaties because we have found in on-water surveys that these are sailors from out of the region that most travel into the Top of the South. “We have incentivised the

Ecotour hits local natural attractions On Sunday local Gary James showed a group of 12 around Wainuiomata’s natural wonders for an education adventure Ecotour. “I believe it to be a successful tour,” he says. “All participants have gone away with a greater appreciation of what ecological treasures we have in and around Wainuiomata.” Starting at Waiu Wetland, the tour travelled to Black Creek with its bare banks, the ancient native forest with giant trees such as northern rata in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area and Brookfield Outdoor Pursuits centre’s pest control. They also visited Remutaka Forest Park Kiwi project, Baring Head Restoration Project and banded dotterel breeding on Wainuiomata beach. “The goal of the tour was to bring together members of groups involved in projects in and around urban and rural Wainuiomata. “To make contact with each other, to see what their project or interest involved, what they were doing, how we could coordinate efforts, and assist each other in all our

efforts. “It is about empowering the community to take action,” Gary says.

It was organised, in part, with his involvement with the local Natural Heritage Trust and Predator Free

groups. “We are looking to do another similar tour next year with similar

goals in mind and include a wider range of community groups,” Gary says.

New community board is sworn in The Wainuiomata Community Board held its inaugural meeting and swearing-in last Wednesday evening at the Community Hub Library. New members Gary Sue Jr and Dawn McKinley, as well as re-elected members Sisi Tuala-Le’afa, Keri Brown, Terry Stallworth, and Jodie Winterburn, were sworn in by Mayor Campbell Barry. Gabriel Tupou was once again elected as chair of the board with Dawn McKinley as deputy chair. Ten candidates ran for six positions on the board last month. It was noted by many who spoke, including the Mayor, that it was great to see the wide range of diversity and representation of ethnicities among those elected. Then, it was straight to work with orders of business and finished with light refreshments afterwards.

Success at Safer Plates day The Community Patrol, along with local police, ran a Safer Plates Day on Saturday with great success. Over 200 vehicles had their plates replaced with safe, tamper-proof screws, over the course of the whole

day. Community Patrol member Paul Knox says it was a great day. “The patrol made $320 which is equivalent to the fuel bill for a busy month,” he says.

Although the replacement of the screws was for a koha, many pleased individuals donated extra as a way to “pay it forward”. “We need to thank Mike Cundy from Countdown and our two police-

men from section six who got really involved, talking to locals as well as doing plate swaps,” Paul says. There has been an increased number of car thefts, thefts from cars and burglaries in Wainuiomata over the

past month. The tamper-proof screws should prevent this from happening. “We hope to run another Safer Plates event in March 2020 and want to thank our community for continuing to support us,” Pauls adds.

Silver Scroll honour for Angelique Angelique Te Rauna, second-year student at Whitireia, has made her Wainuiomata community proud by bringing home a coveted Silver Scroll award. The APRA Silver Scroll Awards are New Zealand’s most prestigious modern music accolades. Past winners include Dave Dobbyn,

Bic Runga, King Kapisi and Che Fu. Angelique says that winning the Maioha award at the Silver Scroll Awards for her song ‘Ka Ao’, has given her confidence to pursue music as a career, and also show her family and friends that she has the ability to be successful on a national scale,

and beyond. While Angelique would like to produce music in English, right now she feels most comfortable with her songs being in Te Reo and believes that Te Reo music will one day be part of mainstream music in New Zealand. “I would love to be a part of the journey to get it there,”

Public drop-in sessions LOWER HUTT FLOOD HAZARD MAPS To better prepare for flooding caused by extreme rainfall, Wellington Water Ltd is preparing flood hazard maps of the urban areas of Lower Hutt. This work takes into account the effects of climate change. Modelling of the Wainuiomata catchment is the first to be completed. But to finalise the maps, we need your experiences and observations of flooding in Wainuiomata. This information will be used to make sure the final maps are as accurate as possible. To do this, Wellington Water and Hutt City Council are holding two drop-in sessions at the Wainuiomata Intermediate School hall. These will be held on: • Thursday 5 December from 6pm - 8pm • Saturday 7 December from 2pm - 4pm It’s an opportunity to see the flood hazard maps, and we are keen to hear your experiences or see any photos of flooding events you might have.

she says. “I love when people come up to me and say that they understand what I am saying in my songs even though they don’t understand the lyrics,” she says. “ I think that Te Reo has the power to do this, to portray emotion in music in a way that English doesn’t.” Angelique developed a love of music toward the end of her school years at Wainuiomata High, but it was already a huge part of her life long before that. Angelique describes how music had always been a big part of her family. “Whenever we are together someone gets the guitar out and there is always singing,” she says. “But no-one had taken it any further than that, until me!” At school, Angelique particularly enjoyed Maori subjects including Te Reo Maori and Maori performing arts, and that is when she started writing music in Te Reo too. Through the Wainuiomata community music scene, Angelique met and started ‘jamming’ with Whitireia graduate and guitarist of well-known band, Sons of Zion, Caleb Haapu. It was Caleb who encouraged her to audition for a place at Whitireia’s Te Auaha campus, where the music department is based. “Caleb got me an audition at Te Auaha. We had to sing a song in front of two vocal tutors, do a theory exam as well as aural and listening tests, to make sure we had a strong enough understanding of music to be able to succeed in the course,” Angelique explained. The Level 4 Certificate of Music has really helped Angelique develop as a musician in a way that she doesn’t

believe she would have done otherwise. “The course has taught me so much about music. Before I was just singing what I heard, but now I understand the structure involved in a piece of music and also being able to read and write music makes a huge difference,” says Angelique. “I find performing really hard because I am a naturally shy person, but because this course is so performance heavy, it is pushing me to perform in front of people more regularly so it is getting easier each time.” It was also during a community music gathering in Wainui that Angelique met music producer and another Whitireia music graduate, Tyna Keelan, and together

they wrote and produced the song ‘Ka Ao’. It is this song which has just won a Silver Scroll Award. “When we first wrote the lyrics for this song they were actually in English. The song was about a conversation I had just had with my Mum about going out into the world after school and not really knowing what I wanted to do,” explained Angelique. “But we thought it would work really well in Te Reo, so my uncle Matauranga Te Rauna translated it for me in the way he knew I would have meant it. Te Reo is a tricky language because it is not very literal, it is often symbolic so when he was translating, it was really important that he understood my ‘voice’.”

Learning through play The sun was shining on Wainuiomata Playcentre on Monday morning for a morning of play, muck and adventure. Playcentre is open every Monday and Tuesday, and is a place for youngsters up to six to come and play in an environment that is supported by parents. “It is parent-led so it is different to kindergarten,” parent Jake Topp says. The Playcentre is located at the back of Fernlea Primary School and has everything a young child might enjoy. However, organiser Helen Graham says they’re looking at revamping and upgrading the play equipment outside. “We would love people to come and

join us,” she says. “Come along with your kids to have some fun and learn a lot.” Parents spend the day with children which creates a supportive community, several parents say. “You really build a network of support,” parent Elle Abel says. Through the centre, you can get a free basic level four training certificate which can be used when going in to home-based care or working as a teacher aide. Playcentre will be on a break over the Christmas and summer holiday and will resume their term in February next year.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

The burning summer questions The summer of cricket is alive and well after the first test against England. Here are some of my major questions for the season ahead. Can Ross Taylor maintain his form? Taylor is one of our best batsmen ever. On numbers alone he is considered in the top three ever for our country with Martin Crowe and Kane Williamson but can he maintain it as Father Time comes knocking? Taylor will turn 36 in early 2020 and has been playing international

cricket since 2007. In 2018, he had a procedure to rectify surfer’s eye, which affects the surface of the eye and is common in people who spend time outdoors. It gave Rosco a second wind in his career but does he have the passion to go on? The 94-test veteran clearly wants to hit three figures this season but after two World Cup finals and being part of one of New Zealand’s most golden cricketing eras over the past decade, it will be interesting to see if he has enough juice in the tank to produce meaningful

innings. Will there be depth? For me, the Black Caps have thrown a lot of players up against a wall to see if they will stick in the short-forms of the game but the test team is settled but lacking depth. Lockie Ferguson is pressing for Tim Southee’s spot, for his part, the vice captain was effective in the first test but was only bowling at 127kph for most of the match. There is little depth in the batting. No one appears to be pushing struggling opener Jeet Raval for his spot.

Raval has proven he is mentally weak at times in the test arena. He does the hard work against the new ball but often throws his wicket away with the platform laid. What happens at The Boxing Day test? Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is a mighty stage and the Aussies are rarely embarrassed on it. I hope (yes, I’ve resorted to hope) the Black Caps show they are no longer the little engine that could and challenge Steve Smith’s men and stand up to the pressure?

Can domestic cricket generate any interest? I’ll watch my Canterbury team but not many others do. Even the domestic twenty20 games draw minimal interest and that has to change. New stars or regression? We all know this golden bubble must burst sooner or later but who will be the big breakout star of the summer? Ferguson has his chance but there’s the possibility Tim Seifert as a dashing opening wicket-keeper batsman could make a claim too.

Radar recognised for squash in community Wainuiomata Squash Club’s Darin ‘Radar’ Galliers was awarded the Jade Wilson Memorial Trophy at the Squash Wellington awards recently. Radar received the award for his dedication to squash in the community and the Wellington region as a whole. “I was shocked when they called my name. I was stunned,” he says. “People were shaking my hand that I didn’t even know saying ‘congratulations’ and talking about the club.” In the past twelve months, Radar and partner Karen, ‘Kazz’, have grown the club from two men’s teams to four men and two women’s teams. They have seen 60 new members join the club this year. “The whole goal has been to spread out and bring squash to the community,” he says. As club captain, Radar has added a ladies night that takes place on Wednesday night which aims to get

more women into the game and teach the skills. “It’s just about putting effort into the Wainuiomata club. I have such a passion for the community and I want to see it succeed. “For me, I would never have gotten that award if it wasn’t for the committee and people behind me.” In August the men’s team, the Aces took out the Winter Division League trophy which was a significant accomplishment for the club. “It is my passion to see people come off the squash courts with sweat on their heads and smiles on their faces,” he says. Radar hasn’t played this year due to two operations on his legs which is why he has been able to put all his effort into the club, he adds. “I love the game and I love playing.” The trophy will hopefully take pride of place in his ‘man cave’ alongside many other trophies.

Hit and miss for cricketers

Wainui Premier Reserves played North City at home in the weekend and had a disappointing result losing by 5 wickets. Batting first Wainui skipper Justin Morgan top-scored with 36 and Jordan Rangikauhata reached 34 and Wainui were bowled out for 207. North City made the most of some wayward bowling early on and chased the total comfortably with 5 wickets in hand. Things couldn’t be more different

for Wainui 2nds scoring 269 batting first against North City. Saikot Sahoo blazed 167 in a wonderful inning then Wainui dismissed Norths for just 23 with Tanuj Ahula getting remarkable figures of 8-11. Following on Norths are 30-2 and a big win next week is likely. Team Brownie got a win by 22 runs in the T20 comp with Mark Hammond and Daryl Cole getting 30 with the bat and Daryl Cole also the best of the bowlers with 4 for 23.
