A perfect day to remember Continued from page 1 As the dawn lifted a minutes silence was observed by a crowd of around 100 who, like tens of thousands of others around the country, gathered in the early hours to honour the fallen and those who have given their lives to the services.

At the same time around 10,000 attended the Wellington dawn service at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington.

It was a totally different morning to 12 months ago when no public ceremonies were

allowed, instead the flag was raised with out the public attending and during last years level four lock-down New Zealanders showed their respect by standing at their letterboxes in a socially distant tribute.

At the time prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, was joined by her partner and father at the bottom of Wellington’s Premier House driveway, listening to the Last Post silently before returning to the official residence.

This year she attended and spoke at New Zealand’s largest

service, at the Auckland War Museum Memorial in Auckland Domain.

It was a day to remember the thousands who lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Ottoman Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians.

To this day, Australia also marks the events of 25 April.

Among the dead were 2779 New Zealanders, about one in six of those who served on Gallipoli.

It may have ended in mili-

tary defeat, but for many New Zealanders then and since, the Gallipoli landings signalled that New Zealand was becoming a distinct nation, even as it fought on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire.

Anzac Day was first observed in 1916. The day has gone through many changes since. The ceremonies that are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand, and in places overseas where New Zealanders gather, are modelled on a military funeral and remain rich in tradition and ritual.

Look out for counterfeit notes Wellington Police are asking businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money, after fake $50 and $100 banknotes were presented at businesses recently.

While Police are making enquiries to establish the source of these banknotes, a person has been charged in Lower Hutt for possession of 14 $100 banknotes.

It’s important for people to understand it is both an offence to make, use or be in possession of counterfeit banknotes.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has clear guides outlining the security features of New Zealand banknotes and how to spot counterfeit notes.

Security features are the same on all

denominations and businesses involved in handling money should be aware of security features within New Zealand banknotes.

If you believe someone is trying to pass you a counterfeit banknote, do not accept it and notify Police.

If you find you’ve already received a counterfeit banknote, put it in an envelope to avoid handling it further, and get in touch with Police.

Anyone with information about the manufacture or distribution of counterfeit banknotes is asked to contact Police on 105.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

inbrief news Kaiarataki navigator workforce Government Ministers have announced a new Kaiarataki Navigator Workforce and Tēnei u approach to support whānau connected to the Corrections system.

The Kaiarataki Navigator Workforce is part of Paiheretria te Muka Tāngata (Paiheretia) and aims to improve whānau wellbeing by building on and supporting whānau aspirations using a Whānau Ora approach. In addition this service seeks to reduce the re-offending of tāne Māori under 30 years. The Tēnei au approach encompasses Ngakau Ora (Māori approach to healing trauma), Kaupapa Māori Wānanga and Tikanga a Iwi (to embrace Kahungunutanga in a way that is transformational and therapeutic) within the high security prison environment.

Paiheretia is jointly led by Te Puni Kōkiri, the Department of Corrections (Ara Poutama Aotearoa) and the Ministry of Social Development, in partnership with Māori. It is a key element of the $98 million Māori Pathway four-year initiative to shift the corrections system using kaupapa Māori and whānau-centred approaches.

Tile art popular for birds A pile of tiles bound for the rubbish have proved to be the perfect canvas for art.

Wainuiomata’s Diana Clark was visiting a friend who owns a ceramic tile business and when she saw a box of tiles that were to be thrown out she had a light bulb moment and asked if she could have them for an art project.

“I had been watching a programme on TV and she wanted to replace tiles in an Italian design and they were too expensive and

so she got in touch with a designer friend and he copied the design she wanted and put it on tiles and I thought I could do that so I did it,” Diana says.

“I wasn’t thinking of selling them I just wanted to see if I could do what he did.”

It started with doing a few little tiles and it worked and so Diana moved on to the bigger tiles and soon had half a dozen coasters.

Getting the tiles to seal properly was a problem and soon found

using an automotive sealer did the trick.

“I got a friend to put a hot Wok on one and it was fine it worked so I had that sorted,” she says.

Diana had been thinking of having a go at selling the tiles sealed with native bird prints and when the opportunity came up she was more than surprised at the response. “ My niece was having a stall and I said I would come along see if the tiles would sell and it went really well. I ran out of what they

wanted and had to take orders and now I have learned what people like,” she says.

Mounting photos on the tiles is the latest process at the moment and is proving quite popular with people sending photos by email to be put onto the tiles.

“It is quite amazing people can email me a photo and as long as the quality is good I can put them on the tiles, it is just a hobby and is the challenge of doing something different each time,” Diana says.

New GP’s for health centre Determined to come to New Zealand Doctor Sally Hopkins up sticks and travelled from COVID riddled UK to end up in Wainuiomata.

Sally is one of a group of four new GP’s to join Whai Oranga o Te Iwi Health Centre in recent months.

Prior to arriving in New Zealand Sally, along with her two young children and husband, were living in Carlisle, a border city and the county town of Cumbria and had for a while had plans to move to New Zealand.

Flying in to Auckland on March 13 they spent two weeks in isolation and then travelled to Wellington.

“I had a little get out of the

NHS plan for a while and New Zealand has always been in the back of my mind. I came here as a medical student and I did a module in emergency ski medicine back in 2004 and loved my time here,” Sally says.

It hasn’t been a culture shock coming to New Zealand she says we drive on the same side of the road and we all speak English.

“There are things that are a bit different from a prescribing point of view and you work in kilometres and not miles and I am still transferring things into pounds and the supermarket shopping is more expensive and the housing market is extremely expensive compared to where I was in the UK,” she says.

A big attraction was the access to the outdoors here and wall to wall rain in the UK was the thing that gave her the final push to move.

“We had just bought a Canadian canoe and we were struggling to get out and use it and I thought, I have had enough, lets go,” Sally says.

And the reason why she chose Wainuiomata was there was a need for doctors and its beautiful setting in the valley.

“It’s also close to the city but it has got a much, smaller feel here because you’re kind of in a basin and we went down to the beach a couple of weeks ago and it was just beautiful and it New GP at Whai Oranga o Te was deserted and lovely down Iwi Health Centre Doctor Sally Hopkins. Telecommunications dispute resolution scheme The telecommunications industry is looking forward to engaging with the Commerce Commission over the coming months on its review of the Telecommunications Dispute Resolution Scheme (TDR), the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum (TCF) said today.

TDR is an independent service, free for residential and small business customers, which helps consumers resolve complaints with their telecommunications provider.

Due to recent changes to the Telecommunications Act, the Commerce Commission is required to review the TDR scheme at least once every three years. The Commission published an issues paper today and has to complete its review by 13 November 2021.

They say the current policy does require consultation but the final decision for a name is left to the council making the consultation process pointless.

Nikki carries on her Papa’s recipe

For years Nikki Stewart’s papa had been making rewena bread for the extended family as a gift to them usually producing loaves daily during the summer and one of the things he passed on to her are the skills to make a great loaf.

It has proved popular. All the loaves Nikki makes and sells at markets are quickly snapped up.

Her Papa had been ill for sometime and with a third diagnoses of cancer Nikki decided it was time he passed on the secrets he had learned over the years to making the bread.

“We were going into lock-down and I said I wanted to make rewena bread and he wasn’t keen so I just started making it and we started doing it with video calling,” she says.

“I made a loaf and took it up to him

and he said it was awful even though I was quite proud of it but he said it was dry and had too much flour and I hadn’t kneaded it enough and so it took about 20 kilo’s of flour to make him a bread that he liked.”

No bake is the same with the bread it can come out different depending on the conditions on the days of rising and baking.

Once Nikki had got the hang of it she was making 15 loaves a week but the cost of ingredients was high and she decided to go to the markets.

“I wanted to share this thing my dad had taught me and it grew from there.

It was crazy. I made around 50 loaves and they all sold,” she says.

Her Papa thought she was going a bit far with it but the process of making the bread Nikki finds is therapeutic with it taking around three days to make 50 loaves.

Ingredients 1 medium sized potato sliced 2-3 cups water 2 cups flour 1 tsp sugar lukewarm water, on hand Rewena bread 5 cups flour 6 tbsp sugar 1 tsp salt Rewena bug, approx 500g 350mls water Method Rewena bug 1. Cook the potato in the water.

Once cooked, set the pot aside until the water is luke warm, then mash the potato with the sugar and plain flour. Continue mixing until a gluey texture forms. Transfer the mixture into a large glass jar and cover.

Leave in a warm place until the mixture forms bubbles and doubles in size.

Rewena bread 1. Once the bug is ready, combine the first lot of flour, sugar and salt

Teaching classes so others can learn to make rewena is on the cards and in the last few weeks Nikki has been supplying Papas Rewena bread to be sold at Wainuiomata Supersave.

Rewena bread uses a pre-fermented starter created by boiling and mashing potatoes, then adding flour and sugar.

The mixture is then allowed to ferment from one to several days, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity.

As with most sourdough breads, the starter can be maintained and used indefinitely, as long as the yeast is kept alive with regular feeding and the potato starter and fermentation lends rewena bread its characteristic sweet and sour taste.

Nikki would love for others to take up the skill. “I don’t want to be the only old lady at 50 making it.” into a large mixing bowl, and make a well in the centre of the bowl and add the bug.

2. Add water to the mixture in two lots, combining the water thoroughly with the mixture each time.

3. Turn the dough onto a flour dusted bench, and gently knead the dough for no more than 10 minutes.

4. Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover and leave in a warm place to prove (Generally 2-3 hours).

5. Remove the dough from the bowl, and punch the dough to remove any air bubbles, then gently knead for a further 2 minutes.

6. Cut the dough in half and place into two greased loaf tins.

7. Cover and allow to prove for a second time(Generally takes 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours).

8. Once the doughs double their sizes, make huge cuts across the top of the bread, and place into a preheated oven at 180 degrees, and bake the bread for approximately 35-45 minutes.

9. Allow the bread to cool before slicing.

inbrief news Sunscreen investigation Consumer NZ has requested the Commerce Commission investigate sun protection claims for seven sunscreens. The products failed to meet their SPF claims and three also failed to meet their broad-spectrum claims in Consumer NZ’s tests.

The seven products include Johnson & Johnson’s Neutrogena Beach Defence Water + Sun Barrier Lotion Sunscreen SPF50. In 2017, Johnson & Johnson New Zealand signed court enforceable undertakings with the commission that products sold in New Zealand would meet the voluntary sunscreen standard. Consumer NZ alleges Johnson & Johnson has failed to fulfil this obligation.

Consumer NZ’s testing of Neutrogena Beach Defence Water + Sun Barrier Lotion Sunscreen SPF50 found it failed to meet its SPF claim. The sunscreen was tested at two different laboratories.

“New Zealanders should be able to trust the sun protection claims on the sunscreens they buy, which is why we are holding these seven sunscreen companies to account.

Improved volcanic ashfall forecasting GNS Science, MetService and the Earthquake Commission (EQC) have joined forces to enhance real-time forecasting models for volcanic ashfall to help New Zealand manage future eruptions.

The g EQC-funded project by GNS Science and MetService scientists will combine existing eruption scenarios with weather forecasting to better predict an area being affected by volcanic ashfall.

Bargain fruit and vegetables

Volunteer Aneterea Sa’u aka Andrew has been part of the Wainuiomata Vegetable Co-op for over seven years and wants to encourage more locals to join the group so more variety can be offered.

He is also calling on the government to support what they are doing.

“I want the politicians to support us more especially in the winter time and then we can do more,” he says.

He says the Co-op model is to eat healthy with fruit and veg at affordable prices and he says the greater the numbers the better the quantity.

“We have around 70 to 80 customers a week which is good and if we have more people involved we can do even more as it makes fruit and veg more affordable because the prices are wholesale,” Andrew says.

The produce is sourced from the same markets the big supermarkets buy from, MT Marketing, and each Friday after the $12

orders come in they calculate what they can get at the best prices for customers.

What goes into the bags is seasonal and the cheapest that can be found from suppliers.

“It is the wholesale price and there is GST included and freight but it still works out cheaper than going to the supermarket for example this week we have broccoli, pak choy, a kilo of oranges, a kilo of pears, carrots all for $12, and there are extra buys with bananas for $2:50 a kilo,” he says Kumara is also available at

$2:50 a kilo.

Customers pay just $12 in advance each Friday and pick up the following Wednesday.

“We also deliver for seniors if they can’t come and pick up the fruit and we also have free bread here from the local supermarket,” Andrew says.

The co-op is run as a collaboration between Wesley Community Action and the Hutt Valley DHB. Other co-ops exist across the valley with around 13 in the region.

The first one was started in Cannons Creek, Porirua.

What’s Cooking... Floral arrangement stolen in Feijoa and Apple Crumble Ingredients:

Method:

Crumble: s 75g butter, diced s ½ cup flour s ¼ cup thread coconut s ¼ cup rolled oats s ½ cup brown sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 2. To make the crumble place all ingredients into a food

Fruit Base: s 12 ripe feijoas, peeled and sliced s 2 apples, peeled and sliced s 1 tsp Gregg’s Ground Cinnamon s ½ cup Cottee’s Maple Flavoured Syrup

processor. Blend or pulse until combined.

3. Mix together feijoas, apples, Gregg’s Ground Cinnamon and Cottee’s Maple Flavoured Syrup.

Transfer to a soufflé or baking dish.

4. Top with the crumble mixture. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until fruit is cooked and crumble crisp and golden.

A small group of gardeners who tend the gardens surrounding the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church graveyard are most upset to discover that an enduring floral arrangement which had recently been placed on the grave of an 11 year old local girl who passed away in 1965, has been stolen.

A member of the group says now that they have the large flower gardens established, it is their plan to beautify the existing concrete

graves with containers of small plants on each of these but they are now obviously hesitant to do this.

The missing floral arrangement contains white/blush roses and will probably still be in the small vase which was actually part of the headstone.

Should anyone know anything about this we would appreciate their advice (phone 5648135) or just leave it outside the Church door.

Gardening in Autumn: By Wally Richards Autumn is a great time for planting out gardens and besides the planting of vegetables and flowering plants, you also have a great range of shrubs and trees you can add to your garden.

It is still early times for new seasons deciduous fruit and ornamental trees or roses but orders can be placed at your garden centres for collecting of, later on, in winter.

Let’s have a look at the various areas starting with the vegetable garden.

Silverbeet is one of my favourite winter plants and you have at least two types that are available, been the original dark green such as ‘Fordhook’ and the newer coloured silverbeet that are called ‘Bright Lights’.

The latter is a sweeter silverbeet and if you don’t like the flavour of the dark green you may well like the sweeter taste of the coloured forms.

When you buy silverbeet in supermarkets you find that you are buying the whole plant minus the roots as this is the way the commercial growers harvest the crop.

In the home garden there is no need, in fact it’s silly to harvest the whole plant, instead just remove the outer leaves and the plant will continue to produce till it goes to seed.

Rust should not be a problem through the winter and nether should pests bother the crop so no extra work involved spraying.

It is best to buy the seedlings and plant them at this time, as seed raising will take longer to reach harvest time.

Broad beans are grown from seed and if you like these iron rich vegetables then plant up a row. Snowpeas are another good winter seed grown crop and are ideal for stir fry.

All the brassicas do well during winter and little problems from caterpillars. You can use the Neem Tree Powder to ensure this.

For those with bigger vegetable gardens you can also sow seeds or plants of Chinese cabbage, cress, miniature leeks, winter lettuce, mustard, onions, radish, shallots, spinach and turnips.

If you place Wallys Unlocking Your Soil under the plants or with the seeds before you cover them, you will speed up the growth of the plants noticeably.

Feed with sheep manure pellets later by side dressing the plants.

If you want to add more minerals to your food crops then sprinkle

some Ocean Solids after planting.

If planting up new gardens or sections don’t be tempted to plant the shrubs and trees too close.

Just because they are smaller when you plant them, remember that they grow and their ultimate size needs to be catered for.

Information on the label will give the approximate end height and spread which gives you a good idea how far to space the plants.

Mind you I have yet to know of a plant that reads its label and the end result maybe different dependent on factors such as the growing conditions.

Planting shrubs and trees too close together may look good for the first couple of years for filling in gardens, but will need constant trimming or removal of maybe half the plants in the future.

When you plant your trees and shrubs at the right spacing apart, for when they mature and the areas in between look sparse, then obtain some perennials or ground covers to fill in the spaces.

These can either be removed in the future if need be or they will acclimatise to the situation and survive.

Also perennials can be easily be lifted and transplanted to more suitable situations in the future.

What to feed trees and shrubs when you plant them? It depends on soil type whether clay or sandy.

Both means you should dig a hole about twice the depth and width needed and use peat moss or compost mixed with the removed soil (about half and half) to line the base of the hole and back fill.

I like to place a couple of handfuls of Gypsum in the planting hole on heavy soils to aid root penetration and for food just use sheep manure pellets in the base of the hole.

It is better not to stake unless it is a very exposed, windy situation and then only stake for a few months while the plant establishes its roots then remove.

Once the roots have a reasonable grip into the earth the movement of the plant in the wind builds up its strength in the trunk allowing it to withstand high winds in the future.

He was national enduro No.2 last season and Waikato rider Dylan Yearbury is on target for a podium finish this season too.

The 26-year-old builder from Cambridge took his distinctive white Husqvarna bike to finish overall runner-up in the 2020 New Zealand Enduro Championships and this year he’s tipped to go even better, especially after his charge to the top of the standings in the early stages of the 2021 series.

Yearbury (Husqvarna FE350) finished in second position at the first of five rounds in the 2021 series near Tokoroa two weeks ago, completing the forestry course just 25 seconds behind the overall winner that day, Helensville’s Tommy Buxton.

And so the battle lines were drawn between these two close friends and even closer rivals.

But the double-header round two in Marlborough at the weekend was time for Yearbury to provide an answer and his response was extremely positive, Yearbury winning the first of two days in Marlborough, 20 seconds ahead of Buxton, and then claiming second place overall on day two, returning to base at the end of racing just 54 seconds behind Oparau’s James Scott.

These results were good enough for Yearbury to take over the series lead, a solid seven points clear of Buxton in second, with Scott third overall, just three points further back.

“I’m in a good position now after finishing second at Tokoroa and first in

Marlborough ... it couldn’t have gone much better for me really.

“I have never before won the national enduro crown overall and that’s the aim for me of course.

There’s a month-long break now before the competition resumes, when the riders head north again for round three of the series, another double-header, at Moonshine Valley, on the Kapiti Coast, on June 5-6.

All rounds are counted towards the championship overall, but riders are to count only four of their five results in terms of capturing an individual class win, ensuring it will also be tight to the finish in the chase for bike class honours.

In addition to holding the overall lead, Yearbury also leads the battle for the over301cc four-stroke class title.

European football clubs get reality check The rise and swift demise of football’s European Super League this past week was a win for fans rarely seen in the modern era.

Twelve top European soccer clubs agreed to create “The Super League,” a European club competition that would be separate to UEFA’s Champions and Europa Leagues. Here are the 12 teams, which include all of the Premier League’s “Big Six” as well as three teams from Spain and three

from Italy.

Clubs involved included AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

The announcement of the breakaway movement early last week saw fans from all 12 clubs flood social media in widespread outrage.

Many wrote the clubs had lost their way and had put the prospect

of profits ahead of the fans, many of whom are generational supporters of the teams.

The condemnation was so swift by the end of the week, 10 of the 12 teams had pulled out of the plan.

Only Real Madrid and Barcelona remained committed to the Super League effectively making the concept dead in the water.

In a time where post-match interviews with players and coaches are so mind-numbingly void of

any genuine insight into a team’s performance, this was a huge win for the supporters of these clubs.

So often fans are subjected to nothing more than lip service and cliches when it comes to public comments from those within their teams but this outcome proves the opinion of fans still matters.

Fan is short for fanatic and while a vocal minority fall in and out of love with individual players and teams from day-to-day, many are

the ones that buy the supporters gear, sit in the stands of freezing cold nights and renew their season passes even when their teams have no chance to win their competitions.

It’s clear several owners of these European football clubs only considered the extra cash and not their fan base when they made a greedy decision.

People power won the day and that’s bold to see.
