The final fundraising push for Alex Moore Park’s new community sports facility is ramping up.

The project needs $300,000 of community funding for the total fitout cost of which $150,000 has been allocated to the ‘Buy a Brick scheme and naming rights

sponsorship combined.

A PledgeMe page has been set up to raise a minimum of $50,000 with the brick purchase in mind.

Funding coordinator Matt Claridge says the fundraising effort will hopefully be completed by the end of February.

Claridge is confident the Buy a Brick scheme will look stunning in the new facility.

“These are masonry blocks that are part of the construction of the building, they’re already there and they’ll have a nice plaque that will be placed on top and it will be in the entranceway and the foyer and if interest is high they’ll make their way up the staircase as well.

“It’s a chance for people to get their name on the building and leave a lasting legacy but also add a valuable contribution to the fitout of the facility that will be used for many years to come.”

Matt says he is looking for community influencers from all walks of life to help promote the cause.

The Hub building will be owned by the Council and

managed by AMPSCI, which will enter into a long-term lease of the upper facilities over the next 33 years.

The Council is project managing construction, with AMPSCI coordinating and managing the input, feedback and decision-making from member clubs, as well as fundraising for AMPSCI’s share of the project.

Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club on the move Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club starts the new year in Khandallah.

After 65 years based in Johnsonville, Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club is moving to Khandallah.

For almost 50 of those 65 years, the club was based at Johnsonville School hall in Morgan Street, but changes to the hall meant the club had to relocate.

Johnsonville Bowling Club provided a temporary home for the 2020 dancing year, but the need for a larger venue sees them moving to Khandallah Town Hall in February.

Finding the right venue to call home is a challenge many clubs face.

These days it’s become especially hard for dance groups, as fewer and fewer halls have resilient wood floors that are kind on the feet and knees.

Khandallah Town Hall has a fantastic floor for dancing.

President Kristin Downey says the Khandallah Town Hall has proved ideal.

“The beautiful timber flooring came from the previously-closed Wainuiomata College, and was installed at the Town Hall in 2017, adding to its lovely ambience.”

Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance club members are looking forward to the move, and pleased to have the space to welcome new dancers to join them having fun on the dance floor.

Karori homicide - second woman charged Police have charged a second woman with the murder of Rau Tongia in Karori on December 20 “This is the third arrest we have made in relation to the death of Mr Tongia, and while the primary offenders have now been charged, I am confident it won’t be the last,” says Wellington Field Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Darrell Harpur.

As the matter is now before the courts, Police are unable to comment further.

Makara Enduro set for this weekend

New dancers Isabelle Joseph, Maggie Boag and President Kristin look forward to a new year of dancing at Khandallah Town Hall.

Despite the difficulties of 2020, four new dancers joined the club last year, and became part of the dancing community.

Some had previous dance experience, some had none, but they all found the joy of the dance and stayed on through thick and thin.

Isabelle Joseph loved to dance in Malaysia, but hadn’t come across Scottish country dancing before she moved to Johnsonville.

She was nervous but ‘went

with an open mind to be greeted by smiles and hellos’ on her first night. That put her at ease and she ‘loved every session’ she attended. Since then she says, ‘Monday evening is a day/time I block off on my calendar’.

Maggie Boag from Scotland, joined when Covid extended her visit to family in Johnsonville.

As a recent widow, she found a whole new community of friends, and experienced ‘such a feeling of accomplishment and such a feeling of joy’ on

the dance floor. Since taking up dancing, she’s also found the many hills of Wellington far less challenging!

Arrest made in relation to Northland burglary Police have arrested and charged a 17-year-old for aggravated robbery in relation to an incident at Stellin Memorial Park in Northland, on January 9.

The youth has appeared in the Wellington Youth Court.

Police’s investigation into this incident is ongoing and further arrests are inevitable.

Two offenders have now been charged and Police have sufficient evidence to arrest a third suspect.

Police are also following strong

lines of enquiry in relation to another offender, who struck the victim with a machete.

This offender was believed to be wearing a Nomad gang vest.

The annual Makara Mountainbike Enduro is back for its 7th year this weekend.

Physiotherapist honoured for CP work

A neonatal physiotherapist at Wellington Regional Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been awarded for implementing a tool to help diagnose infants at high risk of motor disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

Alison Sheppard (image attached) received the Clinical Excellence award at Capital & Coast DHB’s annual ‘Celebrating Our Success’ awards for her work with the General Movements Assessment (GMA) – one of three tools which, used together, are considered best practice for early diagnosis of motor disability.

“The GMA involves taking video footage of an infant’s movements at specific ages – pre-term, term, and

around 12 weeks – which are then scored by a specially trained team,” Alison said.

“The patterns of movement quality over time provide us with information about how the infant’s brain is developing.”

It is recognised that early diagnosis and intervention – such as intensified physiotherapy – for infants at a high risk of motor impairment can change the trajectory of disability and result in better outcomes. Providing family support and active involvement in a child’s treatment is also key.

“The earlier we support optimal movement and interactions, the more we can support quality of life opportunities. It is a privilege to work with

our babies and their families during the initial stage of their developmental care journey.”

Alison was one of several CCDHB people trained to use the tool to assess infants in 2018. She then began the GMA set-up process, which involved collaboration with medical colleagues and teams across the 3DHBs including the ICT and legal teams.

Thanks to the work of Alison and her colleagues, GMA is now used routinely in Wellington’s NICU. Alison co-authored of a recently published article in the New Zealand Medial Association Journal describing the GMA implementation process, which will help other DHBs to set up similar processes.

One of the big new festivals coming up is What If The City Was A Theatre? Put on by The Performance Arcade, the event is a collaboration between the capital’s creative community, with support from Wellington NZ, Trustpower, Creative NZ, and Wellington City Council, which also provided funding of $150,000 to lead the programme.

The free festival will feature more than 300 individual performances from 25 collaborators, and Director Sam Trubridge invites Wellington audiences to take part, to step

beyond familiar routines and find new spaces to discover in our urban playground.

“Imagine a city of live art. Wellington is the right place for it. Our compact centre and collaborative communities make this city a place of dense creative opportunity,” says Sam. “There is an incredible chemistry here, where artists rub shoulders with politicians, businesspeople, tradespeople, scientists, students, and scholars.

“Founding The Performance Arcade ten years ago, Wellington was the right home for this idea. In 2021, our new programme ‘What If The City Was A Theatre?’ explores the whole city as a productive environment for performance, held between three maūnga on one side and the waters of Te Whanganui-a-Tara on the other.”

Karori’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress is re- opening for public inspection on SATURDAY February 6th this year. COVID19 has meant the world war two coastal defence battery had to close down most of last year.

The Fortress was built in great haste from 1942 to protect Wellington from enemy ( Japanese)bombardment and possible invasion. Three huge 9.2 inch guns were ordered but only two were installed. They were scrapped and ironically sold to Japan in `1960.

Onslow Bridge Club Award winners announced The Onslow Bridge Club ended a successful, but interrupted year, last December and is looking forward to a longer playing year in 2021.

At the Christmas breakup, there were several presentations.

The first was the Kirsten Memorial Cup which was donated by Carole and Alistair Wright in memory of their daughter, Kirsten, who loved her bridge and was a member almost since its inception 27 years ago.

The trophy goes to the player who accumulates the most points from the first

The cup was won by John Gibson.

The other cup is the President’s Trophy which goes to the player with the most match points over the year.

This trophy was won by Phil Oliver who played consistently well during 2020.

Georgia Plimmer makes NZ U19s Former Tawa College student Georgia Plimmer is one of 18 players who have been selected for the first ever New Zealand Under-19 Women’s side, set to play a New Zealand Police Women’s XI and a New Zealand Provincial Women’s XI in February, March and April.

“This is a great opportunity for our young, female cricketers to shine on a bigger stage,” said Head of Women’s High Performance, Ant Sharp.

“The U19s represent the next level of up-and-coming players in the country, with several having already played domestic cricket.

“With the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup postponed due to COVID-19 we still want to provide some competitive fixtures for this group as they represent an important part of our talent pathway,” he said.

Transpower, the owner and operator of the National Grid, is undertaking a visual aerial survey of its transmission lines throughout the Wellington, Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa regions as highlighted on the accompanying map.

This work will involve a helicopter flying at low levels (around 1000ft/300 metres) above the transmission lines.

The work is planned to occur between Thursday 4 February and Friday 5 February 2021.

Helicopter will be operating at low levels in around the transmission line in highlighted zones.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a white Mitsubishi light van L300 parked overnight in the driveway of a house in Fraser Avenue was stolen.

It was recovered at the corner of Catherine Crescent and Warren Street, Paparangi. There was some damage to the vehicle and some items stolen. A cream Isuzu utility parked locked and secure overnight in Tarawera Road was broken into, the back canopy door

had been jemmied open. The vehicle was on its way back to a farm in the Hawkes Bay area.

A large quantity of fishing gear and hunting clothing was stolen as well as a firearm safe and the keys. The owner of a property in Prospect Terrace reported that two cameras have been forcibly removed from the outside of his garage where they cover intruders entering the property. A silver

Toyota Echo hatchback parked in the driveway of a house during the day in Angell Street was broken into. A rummage search was conducted but nothing stolen. A silver BMW car parked in Nether Green Crescent reported the loss of a rear registration plate.

In Newlands a householder in Salford Street reported the loss of a Gecko (a small native lizard) which she had permission from

DOC to own for advocacy and educational study. Someone had made a hole in its cage and it had escaped. A white Nissan Vanette parked in Glanmire Road was broken into via a smashed rear window. A splicer machine and a concrete saw were stolen.

In Khandallah A charity shop in Ganges Road was broken into via the back door. The place was given a thorough search but

nothing was stolen. The owner of a house in Box Hill left his home locked and secure. On arrival home later in the day he found the door wide open. There was no sign of force being used to gain entry.

Property stolen includes clothing and foreign currency.

In Ngaio a bedroom window of a house in Fox Street was smashed as a result of a lemon being thrown at it.

Safe use of medicines We all need to take medicines at some time during our lives - for some it is everyday, others only sometimes for a cold or headache. Self Care pharmacists can provide you with the fact card Safe Use of Medicines, and help you with any questions you have about any medicines you are taking. Whether you buy medicines or get them on prescription, Self Care pharmacists advise that they have some good suggestions for taking medicines properly, and for getting the best results from their use.

Know what your medicines are for. Even if your doctor has explained, when you collect your medicines discuss with your pharmacist what each medicine is for. Your pharmacist can give you information on the expected effects of each medicine and how to take or use them correctly, and whether they will interact with other medicines you have been prescribed or medicines that you have purchased.

Before taking any medicine, read the label carefully to confirm you are taking the correct medicine, the correct dose, at the correct time. This is especially important if you take many medicines at different times of the day. Labels have other important information such as when to take the medicines in relation to food (with food or on an empty stomach), whether the medicine must be swallowed whole, whether it has to be used-up by a certain date. Store medicines correctly and dispose of them safely. Safe means out of reach of children - preferably in a locked cupboard.

This is really vital when children come to your home only occasionally. Store medicines in a dry place, away from direct light or heat, so they don't degrade. However, some medicines need to be kept in the fridge.

A new year at Tarrant Dance Studios and it is back to class for students as they start dancing again. 2020 was a roller coaster but we managed to keep spacing, sanitising and tracing and dancing Friends and time were very important for us all. NZ was one of the only countries in the world to schedule RAD examinations and many students took these and achieved their progress level so we start 2021 moving forward strongly. Performance is the key to all performing art studies and the end of last year was very exciting. WellyChristmas happened and all dancers performed on the Lambton Quay stage as well as taking part in the Arrival of Father Christmas to the City. Sparkling smiles and a lot of fun! More than meets the eye in America’s Cup The America’s Cup may be one of the most ideal sports contests for television.

I must admit, my interest was minimal when racing started and quite frankly, I still find all the different competitions, races, regattas or Cups confusing and potentially pointless but the actual racing looks exhilarating.

Watching these yachts get up on their foils and travel faster than 75kph

is like nothing I’ve ever seen.

The technology and skill it must take to sail at that level cannot be understood by those who have never done it.

Poor Dean Barker still can’t catch a break in the America’s Cup. If he didn’t have bad luck, he would have no luck at all.

The capsize of his America Magic yacht was stunning on so many levels.

It’s left Team UK as potential

favourites to challenge Team New Zealand in the coming months.

That is a form reversal of note also considering how off the pace the British entry seemed to be last month.

I’d urge anyone who is in Auckland during a race to pop down to the Auckland Viaduct to watch it live.

However, as a television event, aided by graphics and some moderately intelligent commentary, racing is a must watch and it’s made for the 21st

century human with short attention span.

Gone is the slow chess game of racing like the 1995 regatta where races would take hours.

Instead, races are now 30 to 35 minutes and are done at a scarcely believable speed.

As to whether, Team New Zealand can maintain their grip on one of the oldest sports trophies in the world, well that’s hard to predict at this stage.

The prevailing theory is that Team New Zealand will keep it in a comfortable fashion but with technology changing at a rapid pace and the emergence of Team UK proves nothing is set in stone.

If you’re on the fence about watching it, if you’re part of the too cool brigade which believes it’s just rich men racing their toys in the Auckland Harbour, I encourage you to think again and thank me later.

Taita humble Johnsonville again

Johnsonville’s dream twenty20 run came to a grinding halt at the hands of familiar foes, Taita, on Sunday.

Johnsonville breezed through to the semi-finals after winning all five of their pool games but came unstuck against Taita, who crushed them in the one-day final three weeks ago.

It was Johnsonville’s fourth straight defeat this season to Taita across all formats.

Taita opener Nick Greenwood clubbed 64 off 33 balls and found good support from Deepak Joon who made the most of two dropped catches to hit an unbeaten 54 off 29.

Taita scored 182 for four with Josh Mann picking up two wickets.

Johnsonville’s run chase never got going as they were humbled to nine

for three early on and eventually bundled out for just 84.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara says on reflection, the team was underdone, having not been pushed in their round-robin matches.

“We felt confident but we need our big game players to step up in these matches and it has not happened yet.

“Taita were very clinical right from the start and put us under pressure which we never recovered from.”

He says the team believes they match-up well against Taita but admitted they have not shown it so far this season.

Hit District, who Johnsonville beat in the round-robin, beat Taita in the final by eight wickets.

The two-day competition starts on Saturday with Johnsonville and Taita set to do battle again.

Johnsonville were bundled out of the Wellington premier twenty20 competition at the semifinal stage, on Sunday.

Johnsonville triples winners found The Johnsonville men’s championship triples were completed on Monday with Rob Ashton (s), Ross Gillett and Wayne Coleman winning the final against last year’s winners, Brent Stubbins, Bruce Miller and Adam Ryan.

The final was a fiercely contested game with the teams even at 12 all after 14 of 18 ends.

During the 17th end, Brent was leading 16-15 only to be headed off on the last with Rob taking a three to win 18-16.

Ross Gillett, Rob Ashton and Wayne Coleman claimed the Johnsonville champions triples title.
