If you’re anything like me then you love a piece of toast or two in the morning for breakfast. But with all that bread the question needs to be asked: what do we do with our bread tags? If you hold onto your bread tags they can help a child in South Africa get a wheelchair. Not simply helping someone but also keeping plastic out of the landfill. Continued on page 2. Toby and Fraser Larn want to help save the planet by collecting and donating their bread tags. Photo: Megan Connolly

Two in one: helping others and recycling Continued from page 1. For local woman Amanda Thatcher getting involved in the community and doing good deeds was a large part of what motivated her to organise the project in Wainuiomata. “You can save something so little and give someone a whole new life,” she says. Once collected the bread tags get sent to South Africa where they are sold to plastics moulding company, Zibo. The bread tags are then recycled and used in the manufacture of seedling trays. The money raised pays for wheelchairs for the less fortunate. It operates globally and drop-off points can be found spanning the length of New Zealand. “It is helping and recycling. It’s perfect.” Amanda has grown up and lived in Wainuiomata her whole life and has always been passionate about engaging with her community.

“The hope is if everyone can do just a little bit more than what they’re doing now, we can make a difference,” she says. “If everyone works together we can achieve anything.” The way the community interacts with each other for a cause “is incredible”, she adds. “I feel very privileged to be a part of this community.” Over the years Amanda has volunteered for a variety of passion projects and believes it should be an important part of many people’s lives. “Just start small, find your passion and do it for two hours each month. “Everyone should do some volunteer work,” she says. Keen bread eaters from Belmont School in Lower Hutt saved up their tags and dropped off a shopping bag full of them into Kereru Creative last week. There are two drop-off points: one at Kereru Creative in Homedale Village and one at The Community Hub.

Feedback noted by housing developers Discussions continue between Kainga Ora and the community surrounding the Wood Street transitional housing developments. Last Wednesday evening a public meeting was held at Wainuiomata Primary School and discussed the wants for the community surrounding the homes. Locals were joined by Trevor Mallard, Chris Bishop, Ginny Andersen, CEO from Hutt City

Council Jo Miller, the Mayor Campbell Barry, and city-wide councillors and community board members. A common feeling was that housing is absolutely supported and it is recognised that there is a housing crisis. But It is the nature of them being transitional that is concerning. Andrew Booker, a spokesperson for Kainga Ora Home and Communities, says: “We’ve been working constructively with the

local community over the past couple of months on the Wood Street development. “We’ve received helpful ideas and comments on the development, and we’ve changed part of our plans based on that feedback. “We’ll continue to listen and work with the community, and this includes their preference for this development to be a mix of transitional and permanent housing. “We’ll consider this, along

with the other feedback we’ve received, and we’ll be able to provide an update to the community next month,” Andrew says. Initial plans show there are to be 35 transitional homes going into Wood Street. Kainga Ora is building more public housing in Lower Hutt with up to 50 new homes last year, as part of 270 new state homes that will be available in the city over the next two-tothree years.

Koha settled into new space By Megan Connolly

After some anxious weeks for Koha Shed organiser Jo Bryant in September, the charity shop found a new temporary home in October last year. The new ‘shed’ is located upstairs in the old Moohan Street college gymnasium an upgrade from the damp dark shed space and they were operating out of prior. “There’s so much more light now. We actually have windows,” Jo says. “So many people have commented on how much lighter it is.” Although this space isn’t their ‘forever’ home, Jo and her seven volunteers are hoping after their 18-month contract they are allowed to stay longer and continue to help the community. “That’s what it’s all about: helping those in need,” she says. “Everyone is so appreciative. It is so nice to see people leaving with a smile on their faces.” The Koha Shed found out they had to move from their old location at the opposite end of the driveway to make room for the new housing development. “Matt the college ground caretaker really fought for us to be here. “Without him, we would have really disappeared into the sunset,” she says. Jo adds they are desperately in need of kitchen wear like pots and pans, and girls clothes aged five to 16. The Koha Shed is opened Mondays and Thursdays 10am to 12pm and on Wednesdays 11am to 1pm.

Walking through the history of water By Megan Connolly

Walkers experience water on their guided walk last week. Photo: Supplied

At the end of Moores Valley Road, 28 keen people gathered to take a guided walk around the local nature and water points last Sunday. The walk was an opportunity for people to fi nd out more about the water collection area and how the freshwater sources end up in Wellington’s taps. “Everyone enjoyed themselves and I think they were pret t y i mpresse d with the virgin native bush we have up there,” ranger Richard Clarkson says. The theme of the walk was around the historic wat er supply a nd a lso

what G reater Wel l i ngton Regional Council and Wellington Water do to manage our water supply, he adds. There was also an opportunity for many to check out the local native forest which is considered to be one of the best examples of lowland broadleaf forest in the lower North Island. It wa s a fo u r- h o u r walk that followed the O r ongor ongo P ip el i ne Tunnel, created in 1924, towards the historic Morton Dam. T he Mor ton Da m is one of the largest early concrete da ms in New Zealand and has special engineering heritage sig-

nificance because it was the fi rst and largest of only two reinforced concrete buttress dams to be built in New Zealand. “The history of the old tunnel that goes through the hill range for 3.2 kilometres is pretty neat and I think people enjoyed hearing about and seeing that. “The tunnel brings freshwater into the Wainuiomata treatment plant from the Orongorongo Valley,” Richard says. Hosted by Greater Wellington these walks operate monthly between November and March and alternate between the old forest walk and the water walks.

Nominations open for Respiratory Achievers Awards

Eleven new teachers will be joining the Wainuiomata High School community this year. Photo: Megan Connolly

New teachers start at high school Eleven new teachers will be starting at Wainuiomata High School this year. They are a mix of new teachers and experienced ones, who according to many of them, were enticed to Wainuiomata by the unique community and curriculum. Last Friday morning they all met for an orientation day where they were able to meet each other, share some kai, and get to know the school better before students begin returning

to school. Recent graduate and local, Rebecca Le Lievre, is excited to be connecting with the community and the students. “They are really honest and know who they are.” Rebecca will be teaching Te Reo Maori. She finished off her placement last year at the school. “The community, whanau, students and staff are all amazing,” she says. Incoming English and film teacher, Rhys Feeney, is look-

ing forward to meeting the students and doing some of the co-curricular activities, he says. “The curnculum is unique in that we build topics around what the students are interested in, and then look at it from different angles,” he adds. Nicole Hawkins is a teacher who was drawn in by the curriculum and the range of subjects they get to teach. It is different from her last eight years of teaching. “They’re all more blended

together and it’s very collaborative,” she says. “It is really brave to make these changes to it.” This year she will be mainly teaching English, social sciences and a Maori Activism course. “The community is very strong here and has a real sense of whanau to it,” she says. High school students begin heading back to school this week with leader orientations and senior camps.

Nominations are now open for the 2020 New Zealand Respiratory Achievers Awards, to be hosted by Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ at Te Papa, Wellington, on November 5. These prestigious awards celebrate those among the 700,000 New Zealanders living with respiratory illness who have achieved outstanding success in their lives despite their respiratory health conditions, as well as recognising those who helped them get there. This year, a number of new awards have been added to the event, celebrating support networks that go above and beyond; these include community involvement, health professionals, and Maori engagement. Letitia Harding, chief executive of Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ, says that these awards are a great way to show New Zealand that people with respiratory conditions are more than just their illness. “Recognising community groups, educators, doctors, nurses, and media is something we’re very proud to be adding this year,” says Letitia. “These are the people who are behind the scenes, improving lives and raising awareness. “We’ve been able to celebrate some truly amazing people in previous years, and we hope to recognise even more this year. We know that they’re doing fantastic things, and overcoming some truly huge obstacles, so this is our chance to sing their praises to a national audience Nominations will close on June 30, 2020. Information on who is eligible, and how to nominate them, is available on the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ website.

Bus network timetables to be refreshed Metlink is refreshing its Wellington City bus timetables from Sunday, January 26 to improve reliability and better match customer demand with available driver and bus resources amid ongoing national driver shortages. Greater Wellington Regional Council chair Daran Ponter says in the lead up to these changes, 14

Tranzurban operated services that were previously suspended are now reinstated. The new timetable changes will further reduce the number of suspended services to just 21, down from 55 services at the end of 2019, with further services expected to be restored in the near future. The timetable refreshment coin-

cides with a time when the Wellington network will be under peakhour pressure, chair of the Greater Wellington transport committee Roger Blakeley explains. “So while available resources will be targeted to areas of greatest need customers can expect peak time buses to be operating at or close to capacity.

“This is generally Metlink’s busiest time of year with students coming back to university, so we’re advising customers travelling by bus that they may not get their first choice of bus during the morning peak, and to consider travelling earlier if it suits their schedule. “The changes being made to Metlink timetables will also reflect

feedback collected during our recent Bus Network Review where customers gave us valuable feedback,” Cr Blakeley says. Metlink is encouraging all bus users to check the new timetables on January 26, and stay up to date with the network by subscribing to My Metlink, download the Metlink app or check the Metlink website.

Chatter and laughter is heard at Enliven’s Woburn Home on a daily basis, but none more so than when the home’s day programme is in full swing. Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments manager Sue Wood says the day programme is a safe and fun environment where people, especially those who might usually spend a lot of their time alone, can mingle and make new friends. “Elderly men don’t tend to be social in general, but when they come into this environment they just have a laugh! “Some real friendships get built and it’s great for the families to know their loved one is here and they’re safe, supported and enjoying themselves. And that’s a big reason why it was established.” Activities are tailored to the group’s interests and are flexible enough to happen in a way that suits the attendees. Sue says a recent popular game is boccia ball, which was donated to the day programme. Similar to bowls or petanque, it requires players to throw a leather ball and get it as close to the jack as possible. Other popular activities include quizzes and word puzzles in the newspaper, housie and board games, sewing

and craft, gentle exercise, music, themed parties and sight-seeing trips. Sue says it can be a way for some elders to become familiar with Woburn Home, especially if they move on to become full-time residents there. “Sometimes we’ll get a family member thinking about moving a loved one into the home, so coming to the day programme can be

that first step.” Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement living, rest home, hospital and dementia care, as well as short-term respite, health recovery and a day programme. SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Mahe verse father time The Mahe Drysdale single scull circus must end. Two-time Olympic champion Drysdale is one of New Zealand’s most decorated and highly respected sports people in my 25 years watching sport. However, the time has come for him to end his quest to go to one more Olympics solo later this year.

Drysdale failed to qualify for the men’s single scull final at the North Island club championships at Lake Karapiro on Saturday. The 41-year-old seemed to be carrying an injury into the regatta. He was fifth in the second heat, which saw four rowers qualify for Sunday’s final. His time of seven minutes 57.53

seconds was 0.6s off fourth spot. In the interests of transparency, current Kiwi single sculls front runner, Robbie Manson and I went to Marlborough Boys’ College together and I would consider him a personal and professional friend. While Manson has underperformed at major international regattas, he poses a higher medal

probability in the boat than an aging Drysdale who is harming his legacy by not knowing when to call it a day. The cynic in me suggests Drysdale’s inability to gracefully exit may be affecting Manson mentally. Drysdale has nothing left to prove, his Olympic legacy is as cemented as the likes of Mark

Todd, Valerie Adams, Peter Snell and Jack Lovelock. Those are some lofty names to be in the company of when it comes to Olympic feats. Manson deserves a shot and the sporting public deserves to remember Mahe Drysdale for the supreme athlete he was, not this 2020 shell of a rower we are witnessing now.

Superb golf weekend Saturday saw the start of the Wellington Region Interclub season for the Wainuiomata Golf Club. The competition is divided into 13 men’s divisions and three ladies. With six male teams and a combined ladies team, Wainuiomata Golf Club was well represented. Teams of 10 men and eight ladies play individual and pairs matchplay with one point for each individual match, and one point for the pairs best-ball match. There are 15 points per match, (12 for the ladies), and the team with the highest total at the end of the season wins the division,

Aotearoa Bike Challenge The Aotearoa bike challenge is back for another year in 2020. This challenge is a free fun competition for workplaces and companies to hop onto a bike and get outdoors. From February 1 to 29 everyone is encouraged to ride at least 10 minutes or more a day and record that online to be in to win prizes. It’s not just bragging rights on the line, prizes like brand new bikes, restaurant vouchers and loads more, could be given away.

Whether you ride all the time or haven’t ridden in years, the Challenge is for you. What makes the Aotearoa Bike Challenge great for everyone is that it encourages friendly competition between staff teams and other local organisations, generates community benefits and it’s completely free. So far, more than 5000 companies and 65,764 people have signed up to the challenge. To register your workplace go to www. lovetoride.net/nz.

and promotion. The first team, playing in the top 18 hole competition, the Waikanae Cup at Royal Wellington, started the season with a close win 8-7 over Manor Park. Duncan Cup Div 3 team, started their season with a good 9-6 home win over Royal Wellington. Also at home for the first round were the Miramar Cup Div 8 team who beat Manor Park 12.5-2.5, and Kapiti Cup Div 10 team, who had a great 14-1 victory over Shandon. The Mana Trophy Div 5 team were away to Otaki and fought hard for a 6.5-8.5 loss.

It wasn’t such a positive start fo the new Andy Shaw Div 11 team, going down 2-13 at Boulcott’s Farm, but this is chance to introduce some new players to Interclub. Finally, the combined Ladies team had a close loss, going down 5-7 at Judgeford. The second round of the season is Saturday, February 1. The Wainuiomata Golf Club will be holding its 50th Jubilee over the weekend of February 28 to March. We would like welcome all former and current members to attend. For more information please contact the club at wainuiomata@golf. co.nz, or via the clubs website.

Greater Wellington embraces the trend towards electric vehicles Electric vehicles are critical to decarbonising road transport, so the Greater Wellington Regional Council has endorsed an advisory report on ‘Supporting Electric Vehicles in the Wellington Region’. Greater Wellington climate com m it te e cha i r Thomas Nash says the report, commissioned by electric line companies and councils who collaborate via the Regional EV Working Group, shows how it is possible to meet net-zero emissions targets by working closely together to influence government policy on the key issues of access to EVs, electricity supply and charging infrastructure.

“There is still time for us to halve net emissions globally by 2030 and to reach zero by 2050 so that we can limit global warming to within 1.5 degrees Celsius. “New Zealand can reach this goal and lead the way by ensuring all new vehicles are electric from 2030 at the latest,” Cr Nash says. The advisory report says local government and electricity network companies play key roles in providing leadership, supporting the development of infrastructure, and in the promotion of electric vehicles. “We all need to incorporate EVs in organisational planning, strategy and operations, prioritise EVs in

fleet procurement decisions, advocate for public EV chargers, and facilitate the uptake of battery-electric buses for public transport. “So far this report has been endorsed by Greater Wellington and Masterton District Council, and recommendations taken from it will be built into regional council’s plans, such as those for emissions reduction and transport.” The report suggests organisations and individuals adopt an ‘EV first’ policy which Greater Wellington has already taken on board with their goal of having 50 per cent EVs in their fleet by 2024 and 100 per cent by 2030.
