Karori’s Jenni Carlton has been named a finalist in the World of WearableArt Show.

Jenni is one of 18 designers from Wellington who are among the 102 finalists from 19 countries and regions announced for this year’s World of WearableArt (WOW) Awards Show.

From September 30 to October 17, the capital city will host Aotearoa’s most spectacular theatrical stage production, showcasing the finalist entries from around the world, with an audience of over 60,000 people expected to attend.

The finalist designers will vie for awards and prizes across three recurring sections - Aotearoa, Avant-garde and Open - as well as three new sections - Architecture, Elizabethan Era and Monochromatic.

Jenni says the event has always appealed to her.

“Having a background in performing arts, and seeing an opportunity to create something which could perform for me without the nerves of actually doing it myself seemed like a fantastic idea.

“With the ability to let loose in style and creative exploration I wanted more from the beginning.

“I haven’t entered for a few years and I have missed it, so I am thrilled to be part of the show season excitement this year.”

Jenni says both concepts and the chance to work with certain materials excite her.

“All sorts of things inspire me, sometimes a concept or shape but often it is a material I particularly want to work with and explore in some unusual or unexpected way.”

The desire to become a fashion designer started when Jenni was a child.

“I’ve been interested in performance and costume since I was small.

“I learned to sew from my mum and have enjoyed creating garments for various occasions over the years.

“The elaborate and unusual have always inspired me, so wearable art seemed to be a natural progression.”

She says producing competition level work is both hard work and a thrill.

“Simply put, a fair amount of effort, blood, sweat and tears!

It’s always an adventure and a roller coaster of discovery for me.

“The excitement of a new design, the learning curve of how to realise the vision in my head and the peaks and troughs of the process along the way and finally, the satisfaction of the finished garment. You have to love the journey!

Jenni says she continues to indulge her other artistic endeavours.

“I’m continuing to explore my other artistic interests in printmaking and jewellery

whilst working on next year’s piece.

“It’s an involved one so I want to give myself as much time as I can on it. I’m excited as it’s using a mixture of the materials.

“I’ve worked within my previous entries but adding some new techniques to keep it interesting for me.

“One of the things I really appreciate about the World

of Wearable Art Show is that there is no pre-requisite to enter a garment, it is open to all. It’s what got me started on this adventure.

“I love that you can be anyone, from any background, with a crazy idea and the gumption to create something from your imagination – WOW is an awesome showcase for these inspired creations.”

Takarau Gorge closed for weeks, needs about $1.5 million in repairs The Takarau Gorge road, linking Johnsonville and Makara Beach, will remain closed to through traffic for several weeks while extensive damage from the flood on July 17 is repaired.

Local residents will still have restricted access to the road during this time.

Wellington City Council’s Transport and Infrastructure Manager Brad Singh says several hundred metres of the road were “torn up and pretty much wrecked” after the Ohariu Stream became a raging torrent through the narrow gorge.

Mr Singh says sections of the roadway have been undermined and at least two culverts under the road will have to be replaced. He estimates the repair costs could total around $1.5 million.

Contractors have already started the repair job. Mr Singh says it is likely the damaged section will be reopened with a temporary gravel surface in a few weeks’ time and that resealing of the road will be carried out when warmer weather arrives later in the year.

Motorists can still reach Makara Beach via Karori and Makara Village.

During this time, there will be contractors and trucks in the lane so it is recommended to avoid the area.

130 years of Karori Cemetery On Sunday, Friends of Karori Cemetery will mark the 130th anniversary of the opening of the cemetery.

Several different public tours are planned for mid-morning to celebrate the milestone.

Northern suburbs water network discussed Wellington Water and members of various North Wellington communities have met at Johnsonville’s Collective Community Hub to discuss plans for the water network.

Wellington Water outlined upgrades to the Northern wastewater network, improving the Porirua Stream and harbour health.

Wellington Water’s wastewater chief advisor Steve Hitchison and planner Richard Peterson spoke

at the meeting outlining several issues and solutions.

Steve says wet weather overflows, when storm water gets into the wastewater pipes and overloads the capacity.

There are also issues with blockages thanks to an ageing system originally put in during the 1950s and 1960s and items being flushed which create blockages.

Wellington Water is also planning on 40 percent population

growth in Porirua and North Wellington over the next 20 years.

Wellington Water is looking at ways to prevent wastewater overflow which Steve says is happening “about 10 times a year in Porirua” due to major weather events.

The Porirua Long Term Plan, which Wellingtom contributes to, will see extra pipes added as well as pump station upgrades which will help to ease pressure on the system.

He says Wellington Water is conducting asset inspections to see how North Wellington pipes are aging Upgrades are coming with the Stebbings Valley wastewater pipes and a Churton Park inflow survey.

Wellington Water also uses dye testing to try to diagnose issues with pipes.

Steve says a potential increase in rainfall due to climate change factors in the years to come.

Pukehuia Park opening in Newlands The newly upgraded Pukehuia Park in Newlands will be officially opened on Saturday with a pre-dawn blessing and ceremony.

The upgrade at Pukehuia Park, formally Newlands Park, has been underway since 2019, with numerous consultations with the community for input on the plan and design.

Construction work started on the $3.6 million upgrade in 2020 and after much anticipation is soon going to be open for the community to enjoy.

The upgrade, part funded by a $1.54 million grant from Plimmer Bequest, features: s Two new play areas, one for toddlers and younger children and another for older kids s An all-weather artificial surface for informal sports – including a marked-out Ki-O-Rahi pitch s A basketball half-court s A boardwalk with a small wetland area s A revamped skate area s Pump track – picnic and BBQ area s An expanded car park and

improved entrance area.

TakaSnj Northern Ward Councillor Jill Day says the community has been excited about this upgrade for a while now, and it will be well worth the wait for them and visitors to the area.

“This is a great moment for Newlands – this is one of the biggest park and playground projects by Wellington City Council in recent years. It recognises that the population of the Newlands area is growing – and that it’s a young population.

“Newlands Park was identified as a redevelopment opportunity as part of the Northern Reserves Management Plan.

“We are proud of the significant community input into this project and are looking forward to welcoming our partners, locals and whƗnau to the completed park, to see its unique features like the wetland area, new walking tracks, skate park, basketball court, pump track and play spaces for big and little kids.”

Road resurfacing explained at Churton Park meeting Brad Singh, Wellington City Council’s manager responsible for ensuring roads are properly maintained spoke to Churton Park residents about the state of roads.

The resurfacing of roads with chipseal is a hot-button topic guaranteed to raise public ire especially when it replaces smooth asphalt.

Objections include the fear of loose chips flicked as missiles from car tyres or being trodden into our homes. Cyclists fear injuries from skidding on loose gravel and

neighbours object to increased tyre noise.

Brad explained that although both surfaces have the same average 10 year life, laying asphalt is much more expensive than chipseal that its use is reserved for sections of roads that are particularly, steep, winding or carrying heavy vehicles.

It could be used on all roads, but only with a significant increase in rates.

His team investigates other ways to address the community’s concerns

instead, such as working with contractors to ensure the quality of the chipseal and sweeping up loose chips.

They also search for other surfaces that could offer an affordable and sustainable alternative.

While Brad’s team regularly inspects Wellington’s roads, he encourages residents to let the Council know of any problems such as loose chips, potholes or breaking up of road surfaces.

Ngaio author debuts new book

Ngaio author Anne Harre’s 17-year labour of love is about to hit bookshelves.

The Leaning Man, a crime fiction novel, is about Stella Weston’s quest to get answers about her friend’s death after she returns to Wellington for her parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.

The school librarian says the journey to a published author has been long but worthwhile.

“I’ve always written, either bad teenage poetry or the odd short story but I always felt one day that I would write a longer novel,” Anne says.

“After I had my first baby which was 17 years ago, my brain was fuzz and I had a friend who was in a writing workshop that did poetry.

“I wasn’t a poet but I did ok with it but it wasn’t satisfying, it was too short.

Five years ago, Anne did a writing course with acclaimed author Mandy Hager “Mandy was great, she’s very nuts and bolts and assumes you can write and I just loved that year.”

Anne was then awarded the inaugural Hachette Mentorship for the manuscript of The Leaning Man. While they did not publish it, The Cuba Press picked up the book in 2019 after being enticed by the first three chapters.

“It’s dogged determination to keep going at this point and to put yourself out there but I’ve had tremendous support from my husband and we have got there.”

Anne says the book pulls no punches and is easily relatable to Wellingtonians.

Ngaio author Anne Harre’s 17 year journey to release her first novel will come to fruition next week.

“I wanted to have Wellington be central to the book.

“I’ve lived here 20 years so I’m almost a local but I wanted Wellington to be recognisable..”

She says it is exciting to have the book launched for public consumption.

Anne says her main character is somebody who was coming back to Wellington and trying to figure out if she could stay.

“I wanted a fish out of water character and I feel she represents that well.”

Anne hopes more stand alone books can come from the initial offering.

Welcome to another warm and sunny week in Wellington! Hopefully with some optimism, the rain will hold off long enough for our clients to finish their outdoor renovations.

This week I got to share my experiences with local school students and I was asked a profound question - which was roughly: “In life we all strive to ‘succeed’. As a real estate agent/company that the community uses and trusts the most, what happens after you succeed in the path you have chosen?”

It took me back a bit, as in my eyes no one ever reaches ‘success’. It isn’t a destination measured by awards or income. Success is a journey of continuous improvement and a dedication to doing better every day for clients and the community. At the end of my life, no one is going to care how many houses I sold or that we were the most used and trusted real estate team in the area. The only thing that will transcend our physical existence is the impact we’ve made for others. The concept of being a socially responsible person / business.

Sitting on multiple business / community associations, it is clear to me that our community wants to support positive initiatives and the long-term sustainability/survivability of our community. In a previous column, we discussed the need to work together as a community and thrive regardless of what the mall does. We shouldn’t wait for some big franchise to ‘save us’ on their terms, we need to make our community SO amazing that the big corporations want to be part of OUR community on OUR terms.

I want to challenge those in our community who are fortunate enough to be in a position of privilege or ‘success’, to look

The body responds immediately and begins repairing the wound with the skin closing up and trying to return to normal as soon as possible. The time of repair may only be needed for a very short time and last for a matter of days or it may need to continue for weeks and months, depending on the type and size of the injury.

In the past many wounds have been “fixed” with a plaster, the multipurpose plastic dressing strip. These are fine for small scratches and cuts but there are now many more dressings available for the different types of wounds that can occur.

In the past it was believed that wounds should be kept dry but now it is recommended that to help a wound heal well it should be kept moist.

This is because a moist wound environment allows the skin cells to grow more quickly, thus healing and returning to normal in much less time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore the health of the tissue. With any wound once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline is appropriate to be used.

Next dry the area and apply the dressing.

However if the wound is unclean and is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed so that the wound does not become infected.

It is necessary in these cases to use an antiseptic to wash the area and remove unwanted particles and debris. Talk to your Self Care pharmacist about which antiseptics are available and how to use them.

from occurring but if the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor regarding antibiotics.

Wounds caused by burns may occur due to sunlight, flames from fire, scalds, chemical or electrical sources. The affected area must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The use of ice is not recommended in these cases.

Burns can be superficial affecting only the top surface layer of skin or can be much more serious affecting many layers of tissues.

Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

There are a number of life style factors that can help with wound healing such as 1) diet 2) exercise 3) medication 4) dressing type 5) warmth. Your diet can affect the speed of the healing process.

Foods associated with wound healing are protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin A and zinc and a diet enriched with these components in your diet can enhance wound healing.

Regular exercise increases blood flow, improves general health and also speeds wound healing.

Medication that affects wound healing includes anti-inflammatory drugs as these can interfere with the body’s natural healing process and hamper the action of immune system cells. Talk to your pharmacist about your medication to see if any that you are prescribed will hinder wound healing.

Wounds that are dressed and kept warm heal faster. Dressings also need to be kept clean so change as necessary, usually not every day but maybe every few days depending on its condition.

See your Self Care pharmacist about the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or for your first aid kit. Also ask for the Pharmacy Self Care “Wound Care” card to take home and share with the family.

Tensions rise at Khandallah meeting about SNA

A community meeting at the Khandallah Town Hall has seen tensions rise at the prospect of Wellington City Council’s Significant Natural Areas proposal.

The SNA covers the protection of areas of significant indigenous vegetation and significant habitats of indigenous fauna.

The SNA is set to affect hundreds of private land owners not only in the northern suburbs but Wellington as a whole and is expected to negatively impact land values.

The council is yet to fully detail what this will mean for the 1693 private landowners who will be affected.

There is expected to be tighter rules on land use and management, along with new resource consent requirements for some currently

permitted activities.

For landowners with SNA areas there is an increase in costs that will be caused by these new rules and up to 30 percent loss of land value that will result if the findings in the Darroch report to the council are proved to be correct.

The meeting was organised by Barbara McKenzie president of WSNAC (Wellington SNA Committee) and Khandallah resident, Steve West Ngaio resident, and Craig Innis who was involved in the successful campaign to stop the SNA roll out in Lower Hutt.

Mayor Andy Foster attended the meeting.

Frustration was soon expressed at the Mayor’s failure to address essential issues.

Kerry McDonald was received with resounding applause when he said:

“We haven’t come to be harangued on the environment - everyone here is an environmentalist.

“What we want to talk about now is your confiscation of property rights.”

This view was echoed by others and set the tone for the meeting.

Barbara says it goes without saying that we all appreciate Wellington’s abundant reserves, whether as a backdrop, for recreation or protection of flora and fauna She says the impact on homeowners have the potential to be immense Affected homeowners will be obliged to apply under the Resource Management Act if they want to do anything more than minimal maintenance, such as plant a camellia, build a garden shed, add on a room, or install a drain.

The Khandallah Hall was packed for the SNA meeting last week.

She believes anything more significant such as subdividing will be impossible or at best extremely difficult.

The audience were offended at the highhanded attitude of the council, causing angst by undermining property rights and values Many people emphasised that most of the landowners affected are people who have put a high

value on the environment, and have worked to develop and protect the area in some cases for generations.

There was strong criticism of the Council’s failure to manage its own reserves.

A significant number of people were not personally affected but saw it is a matter of principle, a basic human rights issue of concern for all Wellingtonians.

Bubble busters get down and dirty In the month of Plastic Free July, Bubble Busters collected from the sea, five glass bottles, four plastic mugs, three ID Cards, two pairs of pants, and a silicon suction cup too.

It’s not as festive as it sounds, especially in the middle of winter, but every month the Bubble Busters Adventure Club dives around Wellington Harbour collecting the rubbish that accumulates on the seafloor.

Bubble Busters started in 2017 as a group wanting to have some fun diving – and the environment has benefited no end, but unfortunately the work never ends, says volunteer diver Peter Humphris.

“We do other sites around the harbour, but usually target the area near Te Papa as it never stays clean for very long.

“It’s frustrating, and I think we all have a part to play in being conscious about how we dispose of things.

Remember if you drop it on the street it can end up in the sea – so we ask everyone to take care to dispose of their rubbish properly, wherever they are.”

“Some of the weirder things we’ve found include a park bench, motor scooters, adult toys, bongs, handbags and wallets, lots of clothing and blankets, tampons, little statues of elephants and Jesus – and sadly lots of scooters lately.”

They usually get between 2-4 divers at clean-ups, and are currently looking for volunteers.

“In recent times people’s lives have gotten busier and many of the divers and shore helpers can’t attend as often – so we’re keen to hear from anyone who’s able to lend a hand doing a fun and rewarding activity once a month.”

Wellington City Council removes and disposes of the rubbish, and the volunteers get a free lunch from one of the many food trucks at the Harbourside Market.

Olympics don’t sit easy despite the entertainment The Olympics are happening.

Six months ago, I would have given you good odds to say they would not.

The Tokyo Games are forging ahead in the name of athlete bubbles and hand sanitisation and social distancing.

Athletes have already contracted Covid-19 in and around the athlete’s village and yet this event does not look to be slowing down.

Personally, I do not think they should be going ahead.

The world has a global pandemic to deal with and that outranks a sports extravaganza masked as a show of goodwill and unity.

The Japanese public seem to have soured on hosting the Olympics many months ago and that is not changing now that athletes are competing.

You cannot blame them.

No Japanese fan can attend any of the events in the true sense of the word.

This event has become a made for

television event which generates too much money to have the pin pulled on it at this point.

Rules around health and safety seem to be made up or changed on a daily basis.

We have all heard of adaptation, but it is getting a little silly.

I have sympathy for the athletes on numerous fronts.

Competing at an Olympics I’m sure is a life goal and when you’ve had to wait an extra year, I’m sure those taking part are hungrier for

success than ever.

I feel for them because that drive to succeed comes at the risk of their health.

Regardless of the best intentions of team officials and the International Olympic Committee, Covid-19 may find a way around all precautions.

I am also thrilled for childhood friend and sports journalist, Guy Heveldt who is covering the Olympics live in Tokyo for TVNZ 1 News.

As a fellow journalist, I know how highly coveted an Olympic Games

assignment is.

Like the athletes, it is a career highlight for any sports journalist and I assure you, Guy has worked his tail off for the opportunity he will undoubtedly make the most of.

Yes, the sports fan in me is excited to watch sports I don’t pay much attention to outside the Olympics.

But that is easy to say from the comfort of my couch.

If the Olympics sit uncomfortably for you, rest assured, you are not the only one.

Clean sheet for North Wellington

Goal Keeper Nick Stanton was largely unemployed between the sticks when North Wellington FC travelled to Karori Park last weekend to face Waterside Karori in Round 15 of 18 of the Men’s Central League. It wasn’t so quiet at the other end of the Park though with Norths enjoying a very comfortable 3-0 win in the end thanks to an Own Goal and two quality North Wellington strikes from Billy Scott and Cam Mackenzie.

It could have been more with Norths missing a penalty due to a fine save by Karori’s Charlie Morris and a number of promising moves that were never converted as perhaps they should have been.

Own Goal was the first score on the board after 28 minutes. Norths Cam Mackenzie was the architect of the end result and many in the crowd thought he had scored himself after a jinking run down the left flank that resulted in the ball squeezing between the post and

keeper. Billy Scott got the second in the 61st minute when he left the familiar confines of the Norths defensive line and took a day trip up to the Waterside 18 yard box. From there it was a joyous reunion with his head and the ball that had come in from a delightful corner and was thundered down from a great height to hit the ground and bounce over the line and into the net.

It took another 20 minutes for Norths to feel comfortable when Mackenzie came to the fore again with a well struck shot that asserted Norths ownership of the game.

The woes continued for Waterside when they played the last 6 minutes a man down after a red card infringement.

In other matches in the round Lower Hutt clipped Miramar’s wings with a 4-2 win and Wellington Olympic had a pleasant outing at home with a 7-1 win over Petone.

Wairarapa’s road trip to Napier was worth the effort for a 3-2 victory and Western Suburbs made short work of Wainuiomata through a

7-0 thrashing at Endeavour Park.

The deck chairs continue to be rearranged at the top end of the table with Olympic back on top now on 38 points, Miramar 36 and Lower Hutt on 34. Wainuiomata have a negative 63 goal differential and have yet to get off the mark while Petone remain on 6 points for another week and Waterside Karori remain safely clear of relegation along with North Wellington, both on 15 points.

Johnsonville season ends in defeat

Johnsonville’s Hardham Cup campaign and premier season came to a grinding halt on Saturday thanks to a 60-7 semifinal loss to Petone at Petone Rec. Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson says he was disappointed by the final score as he felt his team was capable of pushing Petone much closer.

“We didn’t start well and could not catch up.

“They played us the way we wanted to play them,” Jason says.

“They got to the edge and played with width.”

Johnsonville struggled on the heavy ground with injuries to their front rowers forcing golden oldies scrums early in the second half.

Loose forward Serge Hollis was also red carded shortly after the break which did not help their cause.

He says he would have liked to have had a more successful season on the field, with just four wins happening in 2021.

“We have some good, young talent coming through but we need to look at recruitment and how we approach the preseason.

“I think the team is trending in the right direction.

Jason was unsure if he would be back next season but did not rule it out.

“We have to go through the review and I need to take the emotion out of it and then go from there.”
