Wainuiomata celebrates Matariki in style Continued from page 1 With a focus on repurposing old materials and using things from nature, the children got creative with recycled cardboard, milk bottle tops, acorns, twigs, flowers, and even dyed old sheets with natural pigments in order to bring the atua to life on stage. Friends and family were invited to attend and sat alongside the runway to give it a real catwalk feel. This is the first large celebration the school has been able to have since Covid restrictions came into place and it was extremely well attended.

The fun didn’t stop there, with whanau invited to stay at school to watch a kapa haka performance and take part in Matariki themed arts and crafts alongside their children.

To top off the celebrations the whole school community enjoyed a hangi for lunch. All of the children spent some time the day before preparing for the hangi by peeling carrots, kumara and potatoes and preparing stuffing. A few bandaids were required while children perfected their peeling technique, but this just added to the fun and excitement.

The event was so successful that the school plans to hold a similar, full day whanau celebration every year to mark the Matariki public holiday.

We have taken a good look at our budget to see where we can save money to counter the increases in petrol, food etc. Unfortunately this means less spending on ‘entertainment, takeaway, dining out’ for now.

Thinking twice about grocery purchases, like buying in season fresh produce, getting creative with what’s in the fridge.

Shop around for petrol pump prices, taking public transport or things like turning the switch off devices which aren’t being used.

Using alternative transport to the car to save fuel eg. motorbike, bikes etc. installing thermal blinds to conserve heat. Dining out less. Thinking twice and researching more before purchasing big ticket items such as a new dishwasher.

Turning lights off in unused rooms.

Shop for fruit and vegetables at weekend markets or at shops which only sell such produce. They are often cheaper than those at supermarkets. Or don’t buy lunches or morning teas. At the weekend you can make up lunches for the following week and keep them in the freezer.

We’re not being extravagant. Only buying and using what we need. But we’ve only felt a slight pull on the purse strings being a small family.

More zoom for new Naenae Pool The new Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre is getting double the zoom with the addition of a second zoom tube. It’ll also have more flexibility with the inclusion of a second moveable bulkhead. Both additions have been approved to be included into the final design following feedback from community and aquatic sports users. Both additional items can be met within the approved $68m budget.

"I know lots of young people have missed being able to ride the hydro-slide, or as we say in Lower Hutt, "Zoom tube". I’m excited to be able to announce not just one but two zoom tubes will be included in the new pool," said Mayor Campbell Barry.

"Even better, both fibreglass tubes will be made right here in Lower Hutt by a local business."

The Project team is working with hydro-slide designers New Wave Aquatics on the design of the two zoom tubes. The second slide will be aimed at rangatahi with more challenging twists and turns, transparent sections that give the sense of flying through space and a sphere to put riders into a spin.

The fibreglass tubes will be made locally by a company in Wingate who have worked with New Wave Aquatics before.

"This project is about delivering many things for our local community but first and foremost is a fun, multipurpose centre where people can take part in all sorts of activities.

"The pool was a great family activity for residents in Lower Hutt and Wellington for years and decisions like this will guarantee it continues to entertain generations to come," Mayor Barry said.

the main pool can be used by the community and schools while aquatic sports groups are using it. This functionality was one of the key elements wanted by all users of the pool and was a key focus of feedback during engagement late last year.

Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says Council is focused on making this new state of the art facility accessible, multipurpose and highly successful to drive more people to visit the area and use the facilities at any one time.

"To make that happen we need to ensure we build a centre people want to visit and these additions are another example of how we are listening and delivering on what our community wants," Jo Miller says.

Alexis eager for any role with Pride

Wainuiomata’s Alexis Tauaneai is eager to keep improving in her second season with the Wellington Pride in the Farah Palmer Cup. The 17-year-old is the lone Wainuiomata player in the squad and made her provincial debut last year.

Alexis has spent much of her career as a speedy back but has been told a move to the side of the scrum could be an option this season.

“I’m excited to be part of it and get to know some of the new names.

“I think the coaches want to try me as a flanker or No 8.

“For me, I want to get a bit stronger for that sort of position.

“The last time I ever was in a scrum was when I was 13.

“I was excited when I heard about it because I’ll get my hands on the ball more, do more tackling and be more physical.

After making her Pride debut

Wainuiomata’s lone Wellington Pride representative Alexis Tauaneai is eager to make an impact even though she is one of the youngest members of the squad.

last year, she says she had to get used to the structure.

“When I was trialling for the Pride I was just running up and down the field because that’s what I thought I had to do.”

Alexis says she wants to make the Black Ferns one day and she says this year she is focussing on her in-game awareness.

“I’m real proud of being from Wainui and I wear my heart on my sleeve at trainings and I want to do my best.”

We have now passed the shortest day with heading into longer day light hours we can start planting up our gardens with hardy vegetables.

Those of us fortunate enough to have glasshouse houses can start germinating seeds of tomatoes, capsicums and other more tender plants for growing in the glasshouse and also for planting outside later when the weather warms.

There are now three good reasons for growing as much food as you can plus getting started as soon as you can.

The World Wide Famine which the UN is warning us about in its news items.... which by and large get ignored by our Media.

UN meeting number 9036 on 19th May 2022 it is stated: A global food crisis, already impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, is being driven to famine levels worldwide by the war in Ukraine and the resulting lack of grain exports.

More than 75 speakers told the Security Council today in a ministeriallevel open debate on conflict and food security.

Plenty of reports on alternative media to wake people up to the fact that not only is food going to be short supply, world wide but also very expensive for what is available.

To make the situation even worse in USA and Canada a string of fires and explosions have destroyed over two dozen major food product plants.

In UK the Government is paying farmers not to farm their land and let it return to weeds.

In the US Biden is paying farmers to dig their crops in while in California the massive shortage of water means the food bowl of the States is not happening as normal.

In NZ we have a Govt that is destroying farming through new taxes, legislation and water availability.

Commercial food producers that want to extend the land area they use for food production are either not allowed or have to jump through many hoops.

When the UN says there is going to be a famine world wide you would think that every country would be cultivation land and growing crops not trees?

Will it effect you here in N Z? Most certainly as our traditional supply chains have been broken and many food items we used to have are now not available and what is

available is up to 300% dearer than previously.

All in all it does not bode well.

We are fortunate that being in the Southern Hemisphere we are heading into spring and summer which means you have a chance to build up your food security by growing vegetables and looking after your food producing fruit trees.

I have seen a couple of articles from overseas suggesting that people should dig up their lawns and plant vegetables and that is not a silly thing to do as there is little variety when you only have grass to eat.

Mind you; if you treat an area of grass with minerals from Magic Botanic Liquid and Ocean Solids and you cut the mineral rich grass and juice it or make smoothies with it then you do have some nourishment.

You may not wish to convert your front lawn into a vegetable garden in some cases but flower gardens can be used to plant a few vegetables to benefit and not be out of place.

Backyard lawns are a different story where you can increase the size of existing vegetable gardens or dig/ rotary hoe some strips about a metre wide for vegetable planting, leaving a grass strip about the width of your mower in between them.

There are vegetables that you can grow to eat when they are mature such as lettuce and there are vegetables you can grow and store/ preserve/pickle and freeze. (the freeze aspect depends on a good electric supply which is becoming doubtful by the day) It is the later one that could be most important such as beans, peas, potatoes, kumera etc.

As a child at 8 Elizabeth Street Palmerston North, on the quarter acre section we had not only ample vegetable gardens but also a chicken run and chook house.

Scraps to the chickens, manure to the gardens and eggs to the house recycling at its best.

A chicken house and a small run for half a dozen laying hens does not take much room and they will have soil to have a dirt bath and you can feed them grass weeds, edible weeds and kitchen scraps with a bit of wheat and chook food.

Also we had a pantry back then that was always being stocked and used with preserves, bottled fruit, chutneys, jams and relishes. During the flush of the fruit season we get out the preserving pan and boil up

fruit for bottling and jams.

The corner dairy would have the bits we needed like flour and sugar.

There are a number of people that are awake to food security and are often referred to as ‘prepers’ meaning being prepare for what ever hits the fan. (Earthquakes, Famines, Lock downs) They store safely 25kilo bags of flour, rice, pasta, sugar and other essentials.

They have emergency water stored, a few cans of petrol or diesel with a small amount of Naphthalene (Our Cat Repellent) added to stop them going off.

Extra bottles of gas for BBQ and with some a generator which could be handy if there is a long power cut for keeping your fridge and freezer food safe.

Be Prepared was the old Boy Scouts motto and it is not silly in these days of uncertainty and high inflation.

Your gardens can supply you with fresh food that is chemical free and very healthy for you and yours.

I found at The Warehouse recently a galvanised raised garden you can easily assemble for about $55.00.

This ideally should sit on concrete to prevent invading roots from trees and plants stealing the goodness.

Fill with a good purchased compost add manures, sheep pellets, blood & bone, Wallys Calcium and Health, BioPhos, Wallys Unlocking your soil and Ocean Solids.

Plant seeds or seedlings and water with non chlorinated water.

Spray the crops with MBL, Bio Marinus fish fertiliser and Mycorrcin for the best healthy food which you can grow yourself, eat and preserve.

If you don’t have any land yourself to grow on then maybe you know someone that has but for whatever reason they cant garden and you could use their gardens to grow and mutually share the produce.

Where there is a will there is a way and that makes for great a community spirit instead of the stupid division we have seen in recent times; which is of no help during times of good or bad.

Hopefully the future will be better and efforts you go to will not be wasted as you will have achieved much.

Wainuiomata look for revenge against Hawks

Wainuiomata rugby coach Daniel Smith believes his team should rename their Hardham Cup campaign the “Revenge Cup” when it gets underway on Saturday.

Wainuiomata have made a habit of losing close games this year, including to this Saturday’s rival, Johnsonville.

Petone were crowned Swindale Shield champions after defeating arch rivals Wainuiomata 24-7 at William Jones Park, on Saturday.

It’s the first time since 2010, Petone has won over the hill.

The result was effectively settled in the first 20 minutes following a shocking start by the hosts. Wainuio-

mata was reduced to 12 players on the back of poor discipline as they slumped to a 17-0 deficit. Petone’s lineout was a weapon throughout, and hooker Ezekiel Sopoaga scored the first try from a rolling maul.

Petone Halback Cam Ferreira was a bundle of energy and when he was clobbered high on his way to the try line, Petone was awarded a penalty try. Three players down meant there were more holes in the Wainuiomata defence than Swiss Cheese. Sopoaga

scored Petone’s third try in the corner, the weight of number too tough to subdue. Petone had two tries disallowed due to forward passes.

To their credit Wainuiomata was dogged and struck first after the interval when blindside Kitiona Leitufia crashed through the Petone defence with a bustling 20-metre charge.

The try which secured a four try bonus point for Petone was scored by blindside Jarrod Hrstich. Petone won a lineout inside the Wainuiomata

Wainui winners during Matariki Wainuiomata High School junior netball teams celebrated Manawatia a Matariki with comprehensive wins on Saturday. The Netball Hutt Valley Centre courts in Taita were filled with secondary school netballers, umpires, and supporters. Aromas from the sausage sizzle fundraiser filled the air as well as the tummies of the hungry supporters.

Netball Hutt Valley provided all teams with three delicious King Size Cadbury Chocolate bars for Coach, Manager and Player of the Day. The Junior 2 team had an overwhelming win against Heretaunga Junior 2 winning 25-5. Their performance was a stark contrast from their previous two games with the combinations working well at both ends of the court. Joint player of the day performances by WD Piper McMillan and C/GD Ilai Vagana where their defence deflections and intercepts provided plenty of shooting practice in the goal circle for shooters, Ane Peni, Leah Dix-

on and Integra Smith. "It's great to see we are putting on court what we learn at training," says GK Penny Piper. "Even the umpire said we were on fire. That's really cool to get that feedback," says WA/C Deonte Williams who assisted in bringing the ball through the court and fed well into the shooting circle.

"It is great to see all teams are in the top four of their grades and enjoying their games," says School Sports Coordinator Peter Cowan.

"We hope they continue their winning ways to reach semi finals in three weeks' time".

Foster on a Razor’s edge There must have been a bit of Ian Foster desperately hoping the Blues would rain on Scott Robertson’s parade in the Super Rugby final.

They didn’t, and to his credit, Razor produced a coaching clinic as his team picked apart the Blues at Eden Park in what could only be described as a tactical masterclass.

The game only fuelled the fires

of the many who feel Ian Foster is merely keeping the seat warm until Robertson ushers in the new era after next year’s Rugby World Cup. I would say that new era will be four years too late, but Foster has a chance to change that narrative should he somehow get the All Blacks a fourth World Cup triumph in 12 months.

However, only the most devoted

of All Blacks’ fans would suggest they are favoured to do so.

Both France and South Africa appear to have a noticeable edge on the men in black at this point and faith in Foster, Cane and co has never been lower.

A strong showing against what is meant to be a full-strength Ireland side in the three-test series, will help.

However, the way some of the

Crusaders props monstered the All Blacks props in the Blues, must have been a worry.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who was all but gifted a black jersey, was completely outplayed by David Havili and subbed-off with 25 minutes left in the game.

There are plenty of players with something to prove, not least of all the captain, so motivation shouldn’t be an issue.

This is a massive season for the senior crop of this team.

Foster must feel like he is coaching for his professional life and that cannot be a nice feeling 12 months out from the only event which will make or break his tenure.

Public patience is wearing thin and Razor is waiting for his chance to swoop in.

The Wainuiomata Under 16 Nga Hau e Wha Kotiro rugby league team won back-to-back Maori National titles, over the weekend at Puketawhero Park in Rotorua.

Team manager Sisi Tuala-Ieafa says they were thrilled to win the title again.

“That this was the final goal we set out to achieve in this campaign - there were so many goals during the campaign that the team set and achieved along the way - together.

We are so proud of them.

“We have some amazing athletes with incredible talent. Bring them with their whanau together, add some world class coaching staff as well as wrapping around them with tikanga & holistic supports to not only enhance them as athletes but also empower them to be Maori health ambassadors for their peers and their whanau and you get rangatahi who are proud to be Maori and who are conscious of their health and well-being.

Regional Public Heath’s amazing support the last couple of years means our rangatahi have been

able to participate without the added stress to whanau that can come with campaigns. Rugby league as the vehicle means we can also help give them tools to cope with challenges that they will face as Maori rangatahi and as athletes.”

She says the culture of the team was crucial to the success.

“It is fundamental. We cannot achieve anything without the support of whanau and our kotiro whanau have been amazing.

“Nga Hau e Wha o Wainuiomata Marae kaupapa & existence is whanau centred - hence ‘Nga Hau E Wha’ the Wainuiomata Marae & the Wainuiomata Rugby League club are strongly intertwined and many of our kotiro have strong whanau connections to both.

“Our Marae chairman, Star Olsen is a constant presence and speaks to our rangatahi about the history of the marae and how local whanau worked together to build it.

“Star encourages rangatahi to come along and to use the marae.

Ken Laban are all of whanau that weave the foundation our marae is built on and play huge roles in mentoring our next generation through both Kokiri and Wainuiomata marae. Our staff are all whanau and connected to our kotiro too it’s a whanau affair Several Wainuiomata players made New Zealand Maori tournament teams across the age-groups including Kyla Pasene in the under-14s; Billie Va'a, Aayla Toman, Te Raukura Leafe, Fanua Rimoni, Maia Davis, Luca Ngatuere, Amiria Rapania and Te Arani Vulu in the victorious under-16s and Pounamu Wharehinga in the under-18s.

“I can’t speak for the coaches but we are all so very proud of all our kotiro, they are coachable, respectful and amazing young women who are reflections of the whanau that stand with them. ““Half the girls are playing each other in the High School girls rugby final this Wednesday at Jerry Collins Stadium between St Mary’s & Wainuiomata Hearts (Wainui High and Sacred Heart college combined senior team).”

After a week off, the Wainuiomata premier side returned to Richard Prouse where they welcomed Lower Hutt. With the visitors sitting second on the table and a few last-minute changes due to sickness for the home side, it was going to be a tough ask.

Despite a competitive opening forty-five minutes, Lower Hutt went into the sheds with a two goal cushion. The second half was a more dominant display from Wainui, even when captain Andrew Olivier was shown a red card, it was Wainui that looked the most likely. However, despite Jarrod Smith pulling a goal back, they were unable to find that cutting edge in the final third and it finished 2-1 to Lower Hutt.

In Capital three, the Reserves welcomed Naenae to Richard Prouse. Despite keeping a clean sheet, they were unable to find the back of the net as the game finished in a goalless draw. In the local derby, Wainuiomata Thirds played against Wainuiomata Halfbaked. With the Third team being a young squad and a way for the Youth players to get a taste of Senior Football, it was the experience that ultimately won this game as Halfbaked won 3-0.

The Roundballs continued their fine form as they beat Miramar 3-0 while The Horns had another tough result in their first season as

a Wainuiomata squad as they lost 4-1 to Island Bay. On to the Masters games and The Undertakers had a day to forget as Tawa ran riot winning 6-1. Pasifika have a habit of coming from behind to win games and it was no different this weekend.

Trailing 1-0 to Island Bay, the lads responding with three goals to walk away with a 3-1 win. The OC’s had another heart-breaking defeat as they narrowly lost 2-1 to league leaders Petone.

Sunday saw the Wildcats play their first game in Division 2 and they welcomed Waikanae. It was a complete performance from the ladies as they kept a clean sheet and found the back of the net four times to win 4-0. Sam Lightfoot got her first goal of the season and Sarah Sanders also found the back of the net. 14 year old Brooke Neary continued to show her class in Senior Football as she scored twice, extending her personal tally to four this season.
