Reopening first step

Announcing the reopening of the Wainuiomata Police Station has thrown up more questions than answers.

The Police Station will be running a very limited front counter service with hours and operating procedures still to be determined.

He says a re-launch date is still to be finalised, although they anticipate it will be inside 4 weeks.

He says support for the community involves the appointment of permanently appointed staff to Wainuiomata, a Sergeant, two Community Constables and two Youth

Aid Officers will work mostly Monday to Friday rosters but with the flexibility to alter their hours as they determine is appropriate.

“A permanent presence means the staff stationed there will have the time to work with community organisations and groups to problem solve. Their greater awareness of local issues means they can also work closely with those people who need support and those who need to be accountable for their actions,” Dion says.

As far as opening the station 24/7 he says the demand for service is far greater in other parts of Te Awa Kairangi

Hutt Valley therefore police will not be operating a Wainuiomata based 24/7 service from Wainuiomata Community Policing Centre.

“Coverage for emergency response for Te Awa Kairangi Hutt Valley is centralised at Lower Hutt Police Station.”

Police have made a significant investment, $200,000, in upgrades to the Wainuiomata Community Policing Centre.

For over a year Hutt South Labour MP Ginny Andersen has been working with agencies to see the station re utilised and says the reopening has been on the table for sometime.

“Each month when I meet with Area Commander Inspector Dion

Bennett I’ve been eager to know when we can make this good news known, so having it announced is a great way to start the year. In the past Police sections have been rotated across the Hutt Valley. Now, we have a permanent team that knows our people well - this has the ability to save time and even lives. Building on our strength of being a tight-knit community will help to prevent crime and improve public safety in Wainuiomata,” Ginny says.

For those petitioning for a safer community they say whilst this is fantastic news the real need is to have the station manned 24/7.

“The young serious offenders here don’t operate on a time frame unfortunately.”

Community Policing is back in town WAINUIOMATA COMMUNITY BOARD The Board will be meeting on

The meeting will be held under the Red Traffic Light setting.

After nearly a decade Wainuiomata will have an operational Police Station once again.

And even more importantly, we have local lad Pat Tangipo as Sergeant along with two Community Constables and two Youth Aid Officers. All of these police officers will be permanently based in Wainuiomata. Each month when I meet with Area Commander Insp Dion Bennett I’ve been eager to know when we can make this good news known, so having it announced now is a great way to start the year.

In the past Police sections have been rotated across the Hutt Valley so we’ve had changing police officers working here. Now, we have a permanent team that knows our people well this has the ability to save time and even lives.

More than $200,000 has been invested in the refurbishment of the station which will also act as a community hub and provide space for Maori Wardens and the Community Patrol. I would love to see additional services for the community co-located in the hub once it is established.

The real focus of this investment is our community and our youth. COVID has been hard on young people and it is more important than ever to get the right support in place as early as possible for families.

Having dedicated Community and Youth Aid officers will enable earlier intervention in low level crime and ensure that people in our community feel safe when they are out and about. It also helps to identify and assist families who may need additional support

such as housing, counselling or financial help.

The latest Youth Justice Indicators report shows a continuing drop in the rate of youth offending. The latest report shows that offending rates among children aged 10 to 13 fell by 65 percent between 2010/11 and 2020/21. Over the same period, offending rates among young people dropped by 63 percent. We can work together locally to keep those figures tracking down. Our strength of being a tight-knit community can help to identify and prevent youth offending - and improve public safety in Wainuiomata.

Sports memorabilia auction

With the closing of the Fitzroy Tavern came an opportunity for Darcel Jansen to buy some sports memorabilia to use as a fundraiser for the Kokiri Marae Wainuiomata Pataka.

What caught her eye was two shirts, one belonged to former Black Sox captain Mark Sorenson and the other a shirt from the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club 2019 Jubilee Cup Final 2019.

Darcel intends to put the shirts

online for auction to raise funds for the Pataka.

“I am going to put them up on the Pataka page and on Instagram and it is also autographed which is quite special,” Darcel says.

“Auctioning them will be my donation to the Pataka, I think we are going to need more support at the Pataka as this pandemic is going on for so long,” The number two on the Mark Sorenson was retired when Mark retired from the team.

Mark captained the national side

from 1989 to 2001, and again in 2004, and led them to three successive ISF world championship wins, in 1996, 2000, and 2004.

He was the first Black Sox player to win four world championship gold medals after he had earlier won a world title with the Junior Black Sox. A catcher, he played about two hundred matches for New Zealand, including seventy in world championships.

Among the many peaks of a glittering career was one of softball’s rarest feats, a perfect game in

conjunction with pitcher Michael White in the 1996 world final against Canada.

He retired in 2007.

In the 1998 New Year Honours, Sorenson was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to softball and the community. In 2010, he was inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame.

He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame at the 2016 Halberg Awards.

Wainuiomata Lower Hutt Police are in the process of re-establishing a Wainuiomata-based response team led by Sergeant Patrick (Pat) Tangipo the new Wainuiomata Community Sergeant.

Pat became a Police officer nine years ago and has predominantly worked in the public safety team in Hutt Valley.

He has called Wainuiomata home for the past 17 years, raising three children there with his wife Tia. In his new role, Pat will be responsible for community relationships and overseeing community policing in

Wainuiomata.

Hailing from Nga ti Kahungunu and Nga Rauru Iwi, Pat has always been determined to reverse statistics.

“Maori are over-represented as offenders and as victims.

This position is a privilege and an opportunity to change the script on that.”

Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Dion Bennett says a plan to re-establish a permanent presence in Wainuiomata has been in the works for the past 14 months.

“Pat is the right person to do that,” Dion says .

“He understands the community and the current local issues.

“Wainuiomata is part of the Hutt area

and while Police continue to prioritise responding to calls over the hill, our support for the community can now include a group of location-dedicated staff who can follow up on events or calls that require a little more community-care.”

Pat will be joined by two community constables and two youth aid officers, and together they will have a permanent base in Wainuiomata.

“The appointments we’ve made and the style of policing we’re currently focusing on places community engagement and youth as priority focus.

“We really want to invest in Wainuiomata and be a part of a thriving community.”

Waitangi events at red in the capital In accordance with the Government protection framework for events at the red setting, the planned Whanau Film Night and Te Ra o Waitangi Festival in Poneke will now have online iterations to ensure the health and safety of the community.

A one hour programme of animated short Maori and indigenous films curated by Wairoa film festival will be online on Saturday 5 February.

Meanwhile, Te Ra o Waitangi will

be an online offering on Sunday 6 February with a pre-recorded version which still acknowledges the day and supports local artists and musicians – as well as utilising the services of some of the businesses we would normally contract in to deliver the event.

Targeted vaccination approaches needed As New Zealand faces community transmission of the Omicron variant, too many people who experience mental distress or addictions remain unvaccinated.

The total New Zealand vaccination rates are now very high, with over one million people boosted and 93% of the eligible population double vaccinated.

“We must be vigilant, nevertheless, to ensure that no one is left behind, now that Omicron is in the community. There is evidence that some people who use specialist mental health services and addiction services are being left behind,” Hayden Wano,

Chair of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission says .

January figures from the Ministry of Health indicate that mental health service users have full vaccination rates that are 9% lower than the general population, and rates amongst addiction service users are 19% lower than the general population.

The figures for Maori are also concerning. Maori mental health service users have vaccination rates 17% lower than the general population, and Maori addiction service user rates are 26% lower than the general population.

“Maori providers and community-led initiatives have been

hugely successful in reaching communities that health providers couldn’t. However, the job is not yet done.

“There will be a number of reasons for these lower rates, but we are of the view that access is a particular concern, combined with a level of hesitancy and lack of trust. We have no reason to believe that a significant portion are vaccine resistant as such.

“We know that populations such as Maori and Pacific peoples regularly experience exclusion and racism. We know that these are factors in their mental health challenges. Vaccination is a wellbeing issue, and if these

groups are again finding themselves outside the mainstream on vaccination and more vulnerable to COVID-19, then this is going to reduce their sense of wellbeing and their mental health.

“As we move into the next stage of the vaccination challenge, we will continue to monitor the data and the uptake of the booster amongst these important groups, as well as ensuring that they are connected with and brought into vaccination rollout. These groups require active engagement and, in many cases, the best parties to do that are the community-led service providers.

s 6 cups fresh blueberries s ¼3 cup sugar s 2 tablespoons cornstarch s 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind Topping: s 1¼3 cups all-purpose flour s 2 tablespoons sugar s ¾ teaspoon baking powder s ¼ teaspoon salt s ¼ teaspoon baking soda s 5 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into small pieces s 1 cup fat-free sour cream s 3 tablespoons 2% reduced-fat milk s 1 teaspoon sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. To prepare filling, combine first 4 ingredients in an 11 x 7-inch baking dish.

3. To prepare topping, lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients (flour through baking soda) in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in sour cream to form a soft dough.

4. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto blueberry filling to form 8 dumplings. Brush dumplings with milk; sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. Place baking dish on a jelly roll pan. Bake at 350° for 50 minutes or until filling is bubbly and dumplings are lightly browned.

Town centre upgrade underway

An eight and a half million dollar upgrade of the Wainuiomata town centre is a step closer to starting with appointment of a lead contractor.

Following on from public consultation in May 2021 the council gave the green light to the major upgrade to the Wainuiomata town centre which is a major milestone for the community and will build on the momentum of surrounding developments.

Streetscape specialists John Fillmore Contracting Limited (JFC) has been appointed as Lead Contractor to complete work on the Wainuiomata Town Centre.

“The Queen Street upgrade will build on the momentum of some pretty significant developments over the last few years,” Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says . “Investments in the likes of the Les Dalton Dog Park, Masonic village, the new Countdown, and the mall re-development mean it

makes absolute sense to upgrade the heart of Wainuiomata too.”

JFC have been chosen to turn the design by Local Landscape Architecture Collective - based on the community’s vision - into reality.

“JFC has extensive experience developing streetscapes in city centres, and they come highly recommended by other Councils,” Kara Puketapu-Dentice, Director of Economy and Development says.

Delays for town hall

Reopening of the Wainuiomata War Memorial Community Hall has been delayed due to supply issues.

Work to repair corrosion to the portal frame leg and hold down connection for the hall, which reduced the sear capacity and uplift resistance for the building, are only able to be completed this week due to the difficulty of sourcing concrete for the repairs.

The hall has been closed for almost a year following an inspection in March 2020 found the corrosion damage which according

to a report may have been caused by an accumulation of debris and prolonged moisture around the portal frame legs.

Adding to the rusted portal frames it was also found a large number of floor joists were rotted out meaning the entire main hall floor has needed to be replaced.

Repairs to the building were scheduled for early 2021 but multiple delays in starting the work due to COVID, staff turnover, contractor availability and consent issues held up progress.

A new expected date was then set for April 2022 but was subject to the findings of a further investigations.

A common problem is that we may repeat spray our plants for control but never seem to get on top of the problem.

I had an example of this recently with leaf hoppers and discovered why when I decided to pull out an area of bracken ferns nearby.

The ferns were covered in leaf hoppers, young fluffy bums and adults. By getting rid of this source or breeding plant I then was able to get control over my preferred plants.

If the breeding ground happens to be over the fence you either need to get permission to control there or just hang in with lots of repeat sprays till winter knocks them back.

I had a lady call me the other day to say that everything was ok in her garden till the owner of the section next door decided to clear the vegetation to build.

Within days all those pests that were living on the weeds and plants next door, invaded her gardens.

The safe way to maintain some sort of control is to place Neem Tree Powder on the soil in the root zone of plants and then to do repeat sprays, late in the day using Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil and Wallys Super Pyrethrum. Only spray just before dusk when the pests are settled for the night and the sun is down so foliage is not damaged by the oil.

Repeat sprays would be between every three to seven days till the situation is under control or till the weather turns cold and nature knocks back the breeding cycles.

Just one of the things we gardeners have to face on a good summer.

Dear Editor, How absurd! I have lived down Coast Road since 1982 and as far as I can remember there have been no problems with the school bus service since and long before then.

So two of the sixteen existing bus stops along the route are deemed unsafe for the school bus to stop to pick children up.

Surely the solution for this is to deal with these two bus stops.

Do we have to wait for a child to be knocked over while walking up

to two kilometres along a country road that has no sidewalks? I have walked the walk during a Southerly gale and believe me I would not wish this on anyone. The Coast Road is open to both the North and South weather.

This ‘Take it or Leave it’ attitude by bureaucracy is unacceptable.

Has there been any consultation with the residents of Coast Road who use this service?

Some time ago we had logging trucks and trucks collecting boulders for the Upper Hutt Motorway.

It was arranged that heavy traffic was delayed at the times the school bus was picking up and dropping off

children. Can something like this be arranged? Also the Rural Postie has no problems delivering to each mail box? This could be that each resident was consulted re position of mail box? We also now have rubbish collection each Friday morning collecting from each household.

I believe the safety of children should be of concern to James Meffan. He and the Ministry will be be held responsible if any child’s safety is at risk because of their lack of concern and COMMON SENSE. My children are grown and flown now but I am still concerned for the welfare of the next generations.

Memorial for Ian Cameron A memorial is to be held for Wainuiomata’s Ian Cameron this Sunday.

One of the original Big Buddies Ian Russell Cameron was born in Wellington and moved away to the Wanganui area as a youngster with his family. He moved back to the Hutt Valley when he was about 17 and bought a house in Wainuiomata in the 1980’s. He loved this house and large section and lived there all his life.

Ian Cameron was one of the first Big Buddies in the Wellington region and mentored many boys over the years.

He passed away on 6th February 2021 but Ian was much more than

Local Colleen Kerr says this kind and gentle man became part of her family when he was Best Buddy with her grandson Ashton.

“Ian never gave up, even when he struggled to eat. He always wanted to spend time with Ashton, even when he had no energy,” Colleen says.

“Then one week after Ashton started college, he and two of Ian’s older Little Buddies, and their mum’s, were blessed enough to be with Ian as he passed. We held his hand and told him he was very special and loved. You see, Ian didn’t like to cause a fuss, but in the end we all got to fuss over

him, just like he deserved.”

Colleen says everyone loved being in Ian’s company and he developed a special relationship with Ashton’s Gran and Grandad – they loved talking about gardening and often swapped plants and tips.

Big Buddy Wellington mentoring manager Dave Burcher says Ian was a popular figure in the community.

“Prior to coming to Big Buddy he mentored about 20 kids through Birth Right Lower Hutt from 1983 to 2003,” Dave says.

Fire restrictions The whole of the Wellington region has joined the Wairarapa by moving into a restricted fire season.

A restricted fire season means anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire will need a permit.

You can apply for a permit at checkitsalright.nz.

Wellington District Manager Nick Pyatt says conditions are rapidly drying out, leading to a very high risk fire environment.

“Fires will start and spread very easily if care isn’t taken to prevent them.

“If you see signs of smoke dial 111.

“If you have a fire permit, follow the conditions listed on your permit.”

Fire and Emergency encourages all people planning on lighting fires this season to check the weather conditions.

“If it’s hot and windy, do not light a fire, even if you have a permit,” Nick says.

Alcott deserves attention, not Kyrgios at Aussie Open Dylan Alcott deserves the adoration of tennis fans, rather than Nick Kyrgios.

The quad tennis player bowed out with a runner-up finish at his home open after being named Australian of the Year just a few days prior.

Alcott is a 15-time grand slam singles champion and eight-time grand slam doubles champion.

Unashamedly I’ll admit I knew nothing of the 31-year-old until this past week but he is so admired across the Tasman that Channel 9 delayed their evening news to continue to show his Australian Open final live and uninterrupted.

That’s making a difference and

inspiring people.

By contrast there’s Nick Kyrgios, the self proclaimed bad boy of the Aussie game.

The 26-year-old seemed to have wound everyone up during his singles and doubles run in Melbourne.

He willingly asked his “feral” fans to turn up to his doubles encounters and got right under the skin of Kiwi doubles specialist Michael Venus after the latter was beaten by Kyrgios.

Venus and the German Tim Pütz went down in three sets to Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis on Tuesday at Kia Arena, where a raucous

crowd supported the all-Australian partnership who had hammed it up for the vocal fans.

Venus, 34, on Wednesday said the sledging from the crowd was at times intolerable and some spectators made comments about him and his family as he prepared to serve.

“It felt like a circus out there and not really a tennis match,” Venus told One News.

“Between serves [they were] geeing the crowd up and getting them to cheer at times like that. I don’t think that’s really on.

“You know if it’s on the other foot, old mate [Kyrgios] would

have flipped his lid.

“He already did get mad there by himself. It’s amazing, he can smash a ball out that hits a kid and just ’cause he gives them a racket afterwards people can say he’s such a good guy.”

Venus went on to describe Kyrgios as “a knob”.

Kyrgios is not my kind of player - he’s too brash and cocky while also grossly underachieving.

One thing I will say, he has got more eyeballs on doubles tennis than I’ve ever seen which presumably is a positive.

Every year there’s talk about how Nick Kyrgios is “must watch

and appointment viewing” at the Australian Open.

In terms of singles grand slam performances, I don’t see it.

His two best results at a grand slam are quarter-final efforts at the Australian Open in 2015 and Wimbledon in 2014.

He was knocked-out in the second round of the singles last week.

Perhaps Kyrgios is happy to play the clown and never live up to his potential.

The Aussies do love a larrikin.

Hopefully the tennis public continue to give Alcott more of the spotlight. He’s worth it, I’m not sure Kyrgios is.

Wellington Round the Bays goes virtual As a result of New Zealand moving to Red, the Brendan Foot Supersite Wellington Round the Bays event, scheduled to take place on 20 February, has been cancelled and will take place virtually instead.

Phil Gibbons, CEO of Nuku Ora, organisers of the event, said today “After much consideration, we have decided our postponement date of 3 April is no longer a viable option due to the COVID-19 Omicron modelling forecasts, and our commitment to participant safety.

Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays 2022. This is the first time in 22 years that we have had to cancel the event.”

From Monday, Nuku Ora will begin processing refunds for all registered paid participants. “Refunds of 75% will be given, which is an increase from the 25% stated in our Terms and Conditions due to the introduction of the Government’s Events Transition Support Payment scheme” Phil said.

Due to the quantity of refunds that

need to be processed, it will take a few weeks for Nuku Ora to complete the refund process, but they are aiming to have it done within three weeks.

We’ll be sharing more details about this opportunity very soon so keep an eye on our website www.wellingtonroundthebays.co.nz” As a result of the cancellation, the event charity partners will miss out on raising much needed funds from the event day. If participants wish to donate a portion, or all, of their refund to one of the four official charities, they will be able to do so and participants doing the virtual event will still be encouraged to Run for a Cause and raise funds for charity.

Ulalei endures disrupted tag football season Prior to Christmas, Ulalei’s tag football teams played in a pilot competition run by NZ Tag Football Federation in partnership with Nga Hau e Wha o Wainuiomata Tag. The competition was devised to promote the game in Wellington and to bring the standard and player numbers to the same level of other competitions in the North Island and particularly Auckland, a tag football stronghold.

The game has gone through a lull in recent seasons since first being played in Wellington in the late

1990s.

Ulalei entered three teams including two junior sides as the club continues to develop its younger ranks. Ulalei patron/player Fauono Ken Laban observed, “Our senior team in particular benefitted from this competition especially with the exposure to the NZTFF referees.

There were a few decisions which raised a few eyebrows, but that shows the infancy of the game down here in Wellington at the moment.

The pilot will hopefully forge fully-

fledged season-long competitions around the region and make for a strong national competition.”

Frustratingly, as new COVID restrictions continue to be implemented, the competition may need to be put on ice with organisers Nga Hau e Wha o Wainuiomata Tag conceding the difficulties in meeting those requirements. Ulalei acknowledges the fantastic support this season from estate agent Des Smith, Ulalei entered three teams in the Tag Football competition as it D-Fluff Insulation, One Foundation continues to develop its younger ranks including Vatau Sagaga Jnr here with ball. and Tipene Funeral Homes.
