JANUARY The year began with celebrating North Wellingtonians who were recognised in the New Year’s Honours.

It included Khandallah’s Francis Fanning who was acknowledged for 45 years service to his community.

Johnsonville’s Brenda Pilott was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to both social and public sectors.

Newlands’ Grace Hutton received a Queen’s Service Medal for her services to Pacific art and the community.

Wadestown playwright Angie Farrow was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Northland-based Christina Barton was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to art, history and curation.

Wadestown’s Sue Chetwin was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to consumer rights.

FEBRUARY The Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade welcomed new recruits.

Fundraising continued for the new sports facilities at Alex Moore Park which were up and running towards the end of the summer.

Johnsonville’s Kiya Basabas was putting the finishing touches on her play Potluck ahead of its debut at the New Zealand Fringe Festival.

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW MAY The Swan Nest Trust, established music therapy classes in Johnsonville’s Collective Community Hub for children in need for the first time.

The trust was established in the memory of five-year-old James Swan who died more than three years ago of a neuromuscular condition so rare there was not a name for it.

Johnsonville musician Chris Lam Sam was nominated for a New Zealand Music Award for his children’s album ‘Silly Funny Songs for Kids’. The album was a labour of love during the pandemic lockdown.

Cyrus Dahl’s swings were official opened to much fanfare. It was the first of many positives initiatives Cyrus would be part of this year.

ANZ Bank announced they were leaving Johnsonville.

He talks to Jacob Page about portraying Shrek, impending fatherhood and what it’s been like to be an artist during a global pandemic.

Just when you think you have all the answers on Tom Knowles, he changes the questions New year will be like no other for Tom, who will start it without a New Year’s Eve performance.

“This is the first time in 10 years that I don’t have a New Year’s Eve gig,” he says.

“Since I’m going to be a Dad next year I thought it would be cool to hang out with my family.

He will take on the big role of Shrek on a nationwide tour between April and October next year.

“Shrek is a role I’ve had in my sights for a long time,” he says.

“It’s the perfect role for me in the sense that for so long I’ve had to fit in with the sell-out shows that come that aren’t necessarily in the wheelhouse.

“Finally a show has come to New Zealand with a scenestealing energy that I think I can come out kicking.

“The St James isn’t a place that I have performed yet which is weird considering I’ve been based in Wellington for much of the past decade so I’m very excited for that.

“Everybody loves Shrek and I’ve likened myself to a bit of a Shrek myself,” he says.

“It’s my kind of humour.”

Tom says being able to do so many different things with his talent is a source of pride for him.

“I think doing the variety of things that I have done can only be achieved in a place like New Zealand.

From political verbatim work, to an Irish musical at the Court Theatre, followed by a desk job at the Arts Festival and now a Scottish ogre in a children’s musical all while writing my own Maori musical.

“There’s a definite sense of pride to be able to constantly work by being accepted in so many areas of the art, so I’m very lucky.

“The mystery of Tom Knowles lives on.

“People think I’m a really good musician but in reality I’m an absolute ham and a hack so I stay true to word-of-mouth advertising.”

He says the prospect of having a child with partner, Westside actress Sophie Hambleton initially made him question what impact fatherhood would have on him both professionally and personally.

“It seems I’m going to still be in the mix of everything which is exciting.

“Hopefully my child will be a theatre/musician child and come along to all my shows which has always been the dream.

I’m also hoping my child will be much better than me at all the things I’ve done.

“I feel I sold my soul a long time ago and I will continue to sell out,” he says laughing.

“Wherever a pay cheque comes from in our fantastic industry is fine by me.

“One week I’ll be Shrek at the St James Theatre and the next weekend I’ll happily do a gig at Biddy Kate’s in Blenheim and that’s just how it has to be.”

Tom says his Blenheim roots and ability to throw himself into everything gave him a head-start.

“We were doing gigs in pubs while we were in third form at Marlborough Boys’ College and that gave me a chance to interact with a crowd from a young age,” he says.

WHY PAY KENNEL OR CATTERY FEES?

Tom Knowles is eager to put his stamp on Shrek The Musical later this year but is also keen to ensure he makes the most of every opportunity in 2022.

“It’s also nice to feel like you come from somewhere where the whole town still supports you which a lot of people don’t have.”

Tom says his creativity hasn’t stopped because of the global pandemic.

“In a way, it’s been nice to raincheck on the live performances and find other ways to entertain.

“For me to have a new-found love of writing musicals has been really great.

“When there is no work, you have to make your own work,” he says.

“That’s the life of a creative person.”

Tom says both he and Sophie both balance each other out professionally.

“Sophie’s been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the New Zealand TV Awards and she’ll head to Auckland next

year to film the second season of a popular show which will be our baby’s acting debut in a way.

“I think if I didn’t have a partner who was also in the arts, I think they would believe I was crazy and need to get a job and get serious.

“We aren’t a wait by the phone household and I think if we dwelled on the outcome of every audition, we’d be insane by now.

He says the one thing he wish he did at secondary school was value the skill of accountancy “Doing your taxes when your self-employed can be challenging and I wish my younger self knew that,” he says.”

While Tom has many projects lined-up for next year, he maintains the level of mystery around his schedule is part of the charm.

“That’s just who I am, an entertainer.”

“I get advice from a lot of people and I try to take it all in and make the most of it.

“Dad gives me plenty of advice and I love having him on the boundary when I’m bowling so we can chat about plans for the next over.”

Max would like to play professional cricket one day or first class cricket in New Zealand one day.

Makeover and new name for Otari visitor centre ƿWDri-Wilton’s Bush Visitor Centre was reopened on Sunday with a dawn blessing, following a two-month closure for renovations.

At the ceremony the centre was gifted a new name from mana whenua, TƗne Whakapiripiri. In this case the building is named after 7Ɨne, god of the forest, who had many names. Study of Antarctic ice’s deep past shows large contributions to sea level change An international team including Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and GNS Science researchers has found there was significantly more ice on Antarctica during the Early Miocene—around 16-18 million years ago—than was previously thought.

The paper examines data from the International Ocean Discovery Program and concludes the West Antarctic Ice Sheet was at times much larger than today during the early Miocene epoch—a time in the past when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were similar to those we expect in the coming decades under low to mid-range emissions pathways.

Previously, scientists had assumed climate in the early Miocene was too warm to support a

large West Antarctic Ice Sheet and struggled to understand how changes in the East Antarctic Ice Sheet could have contributed to the 60-metre variations in sea level revealed in geological records from locations around the world.

The research team drilled into sediments in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, to find layers that corresponded to the coldest and warmest periods of the Miocene.

They found evidence of material deposited by the West Antarctic Ice Sheet at locations that are presently covered by ocean, showing the ice sheet grew much larger than it is today during the coldest periods and it retreated again during warm episodes.

This was only possible as more of the land surface beneath the

West Antarctic Ice Sheet was above sea level in the past, and it is easier to grow ice sheets on mountains on land than to grow ice sheets that sit below sea level.

Over millions of years, glaciers subsequently eroded West Antarctic below sea level, making ice sheets in this region more vulnerable to melting caused by oceanic warming.

This study confirms the West Antarctic Ice Sheet today is very vulnerable to oceanic and atmospheric warming and cooling, and could raise sea level a significant amount in the future as our planet warms.

“Our observations from the past help inform predictions of how the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is considered particularly vulnerable to rapid ice mass loss

today, will respond under various future warming scenarios,” lead author Jim Marschalek from Imperial College London says.

Co-author Associate Professor Robert McKay, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, was cochief scientist on the International Ocean Discovery Program expedition that collected the cores.

“The good news here is that prior to our study, we were concerned that ice sheet models were underestimating loss of ice on land and associated sea level rise in these warmer climates, and therefore could also be underrepresenting ice loss in the projections for future warming,” Dr McKay says.

“The geological information now matches the modelling, and

gives us more confidence that the models are capturing the response of both the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the past.”

“One of the key ice sheet models used for our Miocene experiments is also used to project future ice sheet contribution to global sea level,” co-author Associate Professor Richard Levy of GNS Science says.

“This particular model reveals a critical ‘tipping point’ that we are rapidly approaching if we don’t reduce emissions, causing sea level to rise well over a metre by 2100 and much more in the centuries to come.

“Keeping future warming below two degrees, and ideally to 1.5 degrees, is the target to aim for to prevent this,” Dr Levy says.

Bowlzilla back in the capital for seventh year Bowlzilla Wellington is going to be the Celebration Capital on March 5 at a Waitangi Park.

The event will cap off an amazing year of skateboarding Breaking Barriers.

New Zealand’s National Park Skating Championships are returning once again to crown the Nation’s best skaters.

Through border closures and travel restrictions the celebrations continue.

This March marks the seventh year of Wellington’s skateboarding festival bringing everyone together.

This year saw the largest gathering ever of fans and competitors from outside of Wellington for the Bowlzilla celebrations and given the massive increase in participation in skating the last two years the larger attendance is expected to continue.

The weeklong festival highlights all of this through art shows, music, barbecues, catch ups and of course the competition.

Following the debut and success of so many incredible skaters at the Olympics, we look forward to seeing these athletes in action at the National Championships in the Capital. An incredible opportunity for our community to witness the skill of these skaters. The 33-year-old has made threepoint shooting the way to win in the NBA. Curry is now the all-time leader in made three point shots in the NBA, surpassing Ray Allen’s mark of 2973.

Wilt Chamberlain had the rules of basketball changed for him during his career, such was his dominance in the 1960s but Steph is the modern day equivalent.

The irony is that Curry broke the record in Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks.

The Knicks were the team desperate to draft Curry in 2009, even Curry’s parents were keen on the idea.

The problem is they had the

eighth overall pick, Golden State snapped him up with their No 7 pick and the rest is history.

The Knicks have largely been irrelevant during Curry’s career.

Who knows what would have become of Curry and the Knicks had they formed a partnership but it is fun to ponder.

In any event, it’s been fun to watch greatness for Steph Curry’s entire career.

Success, records and scholarships highlight 2020 in sport

There were trophy droughts snapped, records broken, national titles won and international scholarships achieved.

Jacob Page takes a look back at 2021 in sport.

JANUARY Legendary running coach and former Olympic Harriers club captain Arch Jelley was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the sport and the community in the New Year’s Honours.

Karori-born mountain runner Melissa Moon was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Karori-based Pirates swimmer Joseph Stewart won the 5km and 10km national open swim title in Taupo.

FEBRUARY North Wellington FC’s director of football Matt Calcott was named the coach of the Samoa men’s national team.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate tennis player Jade Otway was named Tennis New Zealand’s junior player of the year.

MARCH Johnsonville runner Will Anthony broke the Western Zone 1500m record which his coach Alastair Leslie had held for 44 years. It was the start of a big year for the Olympic Harriers runner.

One of the most prestigious bowls tournaments in Wellington, the Wilton Classic was won by Johnsonville’s Brent Stubbins, Logan and Brady Amer and Allan Brider.

Johnsonville claimed their first Pearce Cup title after beating Taita by an innings and 39 runs at Alex Moore Park.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara hit an unbeaten 199 while Devan Vishvaka added a run-a-ball 136.

It was a stellar season for Johnsonville after they made the semifinals of the twenty20 competition and the final of the 50-over competition.

APRIL Wellington footballer Jackson Manuel was named part of the New Zealand under-20s talent identification camp.

MAY Former North Wellington football captain Cory Vickers and partner Brittany Adams announced their intention to walk the length of New Zealand this summer to raise awareness for mental health.

Olympic Harriers runner Ingrid Cree claimed the Rotorua Marathon title.

JUNE Samuel Marsden Collegiate netballer Rachel Price made the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team.

She was the leader of the resurgence in the sport at the school as they were promoted to the Premier 1 division for the first time.

Johnsonville lawn bowler Dale Rayner was named to the North Island team for the North v South event. It capped a stunning summer season with plenty of silverware amongst her achievements.

Onslow’s Rob Greenfield’s passion for football at Wellington College earned him a Queen’s Service Medal.

Karori United Tennis Club president Peter Browne earned a Service to Tennis honour at the annual Tennis Central Awards night.

Onslow College students Ben Stiggers, Henry Zaslow and Sam Cooper were selected for the New Zealand Under-20 ultimate frisbee team.

JULY Dale Rayner was selected to the Bowls NZ high-performance squad.

Johnsonville’s premier rugby team continued their much improved season with a victory over the Wellington Axemen.

Johnsonville lawn bowlers Rob Ashton, Ross Gillett and Wayne Coleman made the semifinals of the national champion of champions triples events in Hastings.

Johnsonville concluded their strong premier rugby season with a Hardham Cup semifinal exit after punching above their weight for much of the season.

AUGUST Karori’s Pirates Swim Team ended Capital Swim Club’s 25-year dominance of the sport in the capital at the Wellington Short Course Championships.

Onslow trampolinist Eras Viljoen earned two silver medals and a bronze at the national secondary school gymnastics championships.

SEPTEMBER The Kiwi Athletic Club celebrated its 95th birthday.

Onslow College football striker Olivia Ingham was the top goal scorer in the

premier secondary school competition.

Karori football goalkeeper Grainger Scott was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team.

Jade Otway earned a tennis scholarship to Texas Christian University.

Onslow College’s girls first XI football team won the premier title, their first since 1993, with a victory on penalties over Wellington Girls’ College.

OCTOBER Will Anthony announced he was taking his running talents to the University of Virginia in 2022 and beyond.

North Wellington footballers defeated Wellington Olympic 3-2 to win the prestigious Napier Under-19 tournament.

Alex Mort was named player of the tournament.

NOVEMBER Johnsonville lost the 2021 twenty20 final to Eastern Suburbs after a strong weekend of cricket.

Tawa Squash Club will also be expanding their courts.

DECEMBER Johnsonville paid Lil George and June Wairau won the Wellington women’s pairs final over Petone Central’s Christine Robson and Sheryl Young.

Churton Park and Paparangi touch rugby teams won awards at the JAM tournament for their sportsmanship and commitment.
