Students busk for buses with Kapa Haka fundraiser Continued from page 1. All the funds raised will be helping the school hire buses to get the group of over 60 students to Te Papa Tongarewa for their performance on November 6. Wainuiomata Primary will be performing with two other primary schools, two kindergartens and one early childhood centre during their performance next week. Pukeatua Early Childhood Education Centre and Fernlea Primary School will also be travelling into Te Papa to

perform. The performance is intended to be a challenge for children to perform in an authentic public place. Younger t a ma r i k i will perform waiata, while the older students will perform seven waiata-o-ringa, poi, and haka. The Te Papa Tongarewa performance is the fourth time they have attended and is one of the Kapa Haka group’s annual performances. It is a very important part of the school’s performing

calendar, Kapa Haka tutor, Louana Fruean says. Louana is hoping the community will come out this Saturday and support the student’s performances. “The tamariki need exposure at an authentic place to perform,” Louana says. “It is important for tamariki to perform in this because the kapa haka performance is by kids for kids, whanaungatanga, friends and family, in a wider community.” “Come down and support Wainuiomata Primary kids

who are busking for buses,” she says. When asked about how they felt about the performances, some of the Kapa Haka group replied “excited and nervous”. Student Lachlan Hargraves says he is hoping they will all have a “great performance”. “You will enjoy it,” he adds. The children are hoping the community will show up on Saturday morning to support them. “It’s Kapa Haka and it’s our culture,” student Elise McLintoch says.

Community sports bank in the works A community sports bank is coming to Wainuiomata but organisers need your help. Tonight, October 30, at 6pm in the library there will be a hui to discuss the project and its importance with everyone in the community. The idea of a sports bank is to provide gear to the community and players who would otherwise not be able to afford it. There will be a brief presentation by Ray Tuffin, the community development manager at Wellington City Mission, on how the sports bank model impacts and how it has been developed in the Wellington region. A sports bank has just opened in Kilbirnie. There will be discussions around how it works in with community clubs, growing participation in sports in schools, accessing and distributing gear, creating valuable experiences for skilled players and what the challenges may be. There will also be an opportunity to share thoughts and discuss the future of a community sports bank over a cup of tea. If you would like to know more contact the Love Wainuiomata team on lovewainuiomata@gmail.com

There will be a community Hui tonight about the upcoming sport bank project that will benefit youngsters like Mary Waerea, Deklin Frew-Parks and Tau Sa’u. PHOTO: Megan Connolly

The new Hutt City Council and Mayor Campbell Barry were officially sworn in at Waiwhetu Marae last Wednesday evening. Absent: Councillors Chris Milne and Simon Edwards. PHOTOS: Supplied By Megan Connolly

Incoming Hutt City Mayor and Wainuiomata resident Campbell Barry was officially sworn in at a ceremony at the Councill chambers last Wednesday along with local residents councillors Josh Briggs and Keri Brown. Tui Lewis, a former resident, was also sworn in as Deputy Mayor. This swearing-in ceremony marks the official inauguration into the Hutt City Council. Councillor Josh Briggs says it was a great occasion for everyone to be sworn in surrounded by family and friends. “There was just a buzz in the room and such an excitement for the diverse council. “It’s fantastic to see such a diverse range of people,” he says. This will be Josh’s second term on the council. “I am very lucky to have so much support from my whanau over the past three years. “It was great to celebrate but also to acknowledge we have a lot of work to do over the next

three years, and it’s already under way,” he says. The voter turnout for this year’s local body elections was 43 per cent, comprising 31,748 votes which is the highest in the last decade. The new council reflects greater diversity with an equal number of men and women, with more Maori and other ethnicities represented. For local, Keri Brown, this is her first time being sworn in as a councillor, having been on the community board in the past. The ceremony was “mainly overwhelming” she says, and she is “I’m really proud to be representing Wainuiomata”. “It was an emotional ceremony and really heartwarming to see the range of diversity. It’s exciting for the council to represent the diversity of our communities. “I’m really excited about getting stuck into the work and being a strong voice for Wainuiomata,” Keri says. Keri will also be sworn into the District Health Board in the coming weeks.

inbrief news Police campaign focuses on tattoos The new Police recruitment video and campaign –The Ink Beneath the Blue - invites the public into the lives of some of the officers who literally wear their hearts on their sleeves. It’s the stories and very personal experiences behind why they got their unique tattoos, combined with the training provided by police, which equip these officers to police more effectively and empathetically in our diverse communities. All police staff were invited to participate in the campaign and an unprecedented number put their hands up to tell their stories. While the great majority of our recruits already have a tattoo it is still one of the most commonly asked questions of the recruitment team. NZ Police has set itself a target of transforming its workforce so that it fully reflects the communities it serves. Watch the new recruitment video here: https://youtu.be/NcrlvSdMXtM

Volunteering provides new experiences By Megan Connolly

It can often be difficult for young and old people alike to “dip their toes” into a new career or work environment. Volunteer Wellington helps to provide that opportunity for many people like Wainuiomata High School student Rawiri Waru. Rawiri has always had a keen eye on design and architecture, he says. “I really wanted to learn more about it because I want to study it when I leave school. “I love designing. I love the practical but I like that architecture you can kind of make your own,” he says. “I didn’t want to just sit in an office.” Rawiri spent a month volunteering at an architecture design exhibition exhibiting in Lower Hutt which he grew to find interesting the more time he spent there. The architectural exhibition showed the history of Hutt City housing, especially from

Wainuiomata High School year 13 student Rawiri Waru followed his passion for design and volunteered at a recent architecture exhibition. P H O TO : M e gan Connolly

around the 1960s. “I never thought of the Hutt City Council as a place for architecture stuff,” he says. “Now I try to look at it from two different perspectives. I can see it from the inside now which is pretty cool.” Because Rawiri is in his final year of school, he was interested in exploring architecture as a possible future pathway so

he approached manager Katie Terris at Volunteer Wellington for help. “It helps them look at what it might be like to get experience and try things out,” Katie says. “We help people right across the board from high school leavers to people who have been out of work for some time.” “It’s having an opportunity

to explore what there is at a grassroots level,” she says. Currently, the high school works closely with the volunteer organisation to provide a gateway programme for students who are approaching the leaving stage of their schooling. “Volunteer work has to be meaningful and not just cleaning loos,” she says.

Local translocated Titipounamu thrive at Zealandia Titipounamu chicks have hatched at Zealandia, a great start for the hopeful establishment of a viable population of Aotearoa’s smallest native bird in Wellington. Sixty titipounamu (rifleman) were introduced to Zealandia ecosanctuary following a translocation from the Wainuiomata Mainland Island in March this year, in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council. “It’s very exciting that we

have discovered fledglings and eggs this early in the breeding season. The titipounamu are absolutely making themselves at home in Zealandia,” Dr Danielle Shanahan, director of Zealandia’s centre for People and Nature says. Rangers have found seven nests with incubating eggs in total, two in provided nest boxes and the rest in natural nests. “We are especially excited that some birds are building

their nests in the boxes we have provided as it will allow us to monitor them very closely,” Dr Shanahan says. “Our follow up surveys suggest at least half the titipounamu are settling in well in the valley. There are also a few birds that have flown just outside the sanctuary, with some sighted in Birdwood Reserve adjacent to Zealandia. “We hope they continue to breed successfully both inside and out, helped by rat and stoat

control done by the community,” Dr Shanahan says. Greater Wellington Land, Ecology and Climate team leader Philippa Crisp says it is fantastic to hear the translocated birds are breeding. “We moved these birds from Wainuiomata Mainland Island, a Key Native Ecosystem (KNE) site, because our bird counts showed a 78 per cent increase in the number of titipounamu in the area between 2005 and 2018.

Nutout: Road to Summernats fundraiser By Megan Connolly

The Nutout: Road to Summernats Fundraiser, held at the Fitzroy Tavern carpark on Sunday, was a great success, with thousands of people checking out the activities throughout the day. There was everything from burnout demonstrations, a mullet

judging competition, colouring competition, and of course, the best souped-up cars New Zealand has to offer. Organiser Hayden Wilby from the Fitzroy Tavern says, although he isn’t able to know for sure how much was raised, it was “a lot more than I expected”. There were over 150 cars in attendance.

Giving your Non-Surgical Face Lift a push? Non-surgical skin tightening works particularly well on people who are concerned about the early signs of ageing without having to conform to the use of a scalpel. Popular treatments are mainly the face, neck and decolletage. As we age, collagen and elastin, which gives our skin structure and firmness, is starting to break down resulting in our skin becoming thinner and loosing laxity. Fine lines, wrinkles and ‘crepey’ skin start to appear. If you are concerned

about your skin’s condition, non-surgical skin tightening can temporarily halt the ageing process with little or no downtime. The laser heats the deeper layers of the skin by targeted energy. The repair process in our body kicks into action which stimulates our fibroblasts cells. Consequently this process encourages the body to produce its own collagen and elastin resulting in a plumper, smoother, firmer complexion with a more youthful appearance.

Eastern Bays Shared Path comments sought Submissions are now being sought from the public on the Eastern Bays Shared Path as resource consent progresses to the notification stage. Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the shared path is an important project for the Eastern Bays community and visitors to the area, not only for the ease of active transport but also because of the added resilience it will provide. Work on the project involves several components, many of which trigger the need for resource consents from both Greater Wellington Regional Council and Hutt City Council due to construction work being undertaken

within both the coastal marine area and the road corridor The Eastern Bays Shared Path is made up of two sections – between Point Howard and the northern end of Days Bay, and the southern end of Days Bay (Windy Point) to Eastbourne (Muritai Road / Marine Parade intersection). A copy of the resource consents, including plans and technical reports, are available on Greater Wellington Regional Council’s website: www. gw.govt.nz/EasternBaysSharedPath Resource consent for the shared path was lodged in April this year by Hutt City Council.

Fun day at student-led sports event By Megan Connolly

The sun was kind enough to shine for the student organised non-competitive fun sports day at Wainuiomata Intermediate School last Thursday. This is the first time an event like this has been organised by the student leaders which they have been preparing since the start of the year. Keira Harrison from Fernlea Primary School is one of the 13 student leaders from five different local schools who helped run the day. “It’s about bringing people together from all different schools to participate, have fun and get to know each other,” Keira says. Each sports team is made up of five players, one from each school, and range from year 2 to 13,

rotating through touch rugby, handball, soccer, netball and relays. Not only was the event organised by the students, but it was also run by them too. “My favourite part is seeing everyone participating and trying new things,” she says. “I’m proud we did this and lead the day.” At the event there were around 63 students were chosen by each school, not necessarily because they were sporty, but because they represent important values that align with the fun event. “I hope we get to do this again and make it bigger,” Keira says. Wainuiomata Primary School student, Caden Nant was one of the organisers and referees for the day. “I hope it’ll continue to be successful,” he says.

Firefighters celebrate 75 years By Megan Connolly

It was a big weekend at the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire brigade at the weekend as they threw their 75th-anniversary

party. Hundreds of former firefighters, friends and family showed up in support of the three-day event, with a former volunteer travelling from Germany for

the celebrations. Senior station chief Peter Thompson says the celebration was a great success. T he weekend bega n wit h a meet and greet on Friday

evening with over 90 people in attendance at the local station. “It was really good catching up with everyone,” Peter says. Next up was a parade of fire engines, including a vintage vehicle, that travelled from Rata Street and down Wainuiomata Road, Main Road, and back to the station. “It was really great, we had 17 trucks from all over Hutt Valley in the parade,” Peter says. “There were a lot of people coming out of the woodwork for that.” Over 192 people from across the country celebrated with the brigade on Saturday evening at dinner. Celebrations concluded with a farewell brunch on Sunday.

“It all went really well,” Peter says. “We’ve heard nothing but praise for the organising committee.” The brigade created a book of stories during their 50th and 60th anniversaries which they have now added to, and will continue to over the next several years. Over the last 75 years, there have been 462 volunteers give their time to the brigade. Each year the fire brigade responds to around 300 call-outs. And only about a third of those are call outs. The rest are medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, weather events and other requests for help.

If your window’s broken, consider frost-effect for future safety! Besides their 24 hour call out service, The Glass Shoppe has a range of solutions including frosted glass. With improved privacy you can prevent occupants from being overlooked in rooms like bathrooms, without blocking out too much light or adding bulk like blinds can. You also have the benefit of reduced

accidents - if you have large panes of glass, window frosting can be used on parts of it to make it easier to spot while helping hold glass together in the event of a window breaking. And of course you can add style with decorative design to your home with frosted glass.

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

England, England, England It’s hard to remember a time when the All Blacks were more comprehensively outplayed than last Saturday night. England coach Eddie Jones said he had been planning for that Rugby World Cup semifinal for more than two years and now all of New Zealand believes it. Even the most ardent supporter of the men in black must concede when they woke up the next day that their team was out-thought,

out-muscled and out-passioned on the biggest stage. The 19-7 result will go down as one of England’s best and equally one of New Zealand’s most thorough defeats. There was no blaming the referee, no bounce of the ball that went their way, it was simply a clinical dissection of one of the most revered sports teams in the world. Kieran Read’s men were figura-

tively punched in the mouth from the opening whistle and never recovered. I have been a fan of the All Blacks for 25 years and I am struggling to think of a time when the team was so comprehensively outplayed in every facet like they were on Saturday night. I’ve never watched a playoff for third at a World Cup and that will not change, it is a meaningless game if ever there was one.

Perhaps a chance to give Ryan Crotty and Ben Smith a final game in black. On a side note, Scott Barrett, who I like as a player, was a failure at No 6. That does not mean he won’t one day be excellent at the position but he was in way over his head in that semifinal. To be fair to him, many of his more experienced teammates were blown off the park too.

Codie Taylor, Sam Whitelock and Jack Goodhue had their worst games in black but England simply didn’t allow anyone to shine. In essence they did to the All Blacks what the All Blacks have done to teams for the past decade. They humbled us early and stood on our throats for 80 minutes. Got to take that loss on the chin and thankfully it seems like many have.

Local coaches receive award By Megan Connolly

Two local Rugby coaches, Dan Farani and Dan Smith recently won club coaches of the year at the Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU) Community Rugby Awards. The two coached the Wainuiomata Premier Rugby team into the finals of the Jubilee Cup earlier this year but unfortunately lost to Northern United. Dan says he was very surprised when their names were called out. “I was surprised because we lost the Jubilee Cup and against we were up against the coach who won the final,” Dan says. “It was really nice to receive the award. “It shows what the team had done in that final game, at least for us, that the team’s performance was worth recognising,” he says. This is Dan’s ninth year coaching rugby and his fourth year coaching the premier team. “We don’t do it for the recognition. “I’d give up the coach’s award for the Jubilee Cup any day. The cup is for the club and not just for yourself,” he says. Behind any good club or team, there are several people working behind the scenes. Dan would also like to acknowledge the assistant coaches, Earl Va’a and Justin Vaa, who helped support the team through to the finals. “The coaches of the year award It is a great representation of what the team has done,” Dan says.

Cricket Club starts season with success The Wainuiomata Cricket Club Premier Reserve teams first week was cancelled due to bad weather and this week two teams began the season with a win. Cricket Wellington has made major changes to the cricket competitions this year, splitting the top two grades into four divisions and Wainuiomata has been promoted to Premier Reserve grade, also known as Division 4. The bulk of the top team has returned and the club is optimistic of another successful season. The club’s top team played Easts at Miramar Park on Saturday and they bowled first and bowled Easts out for 147, with a solid bowling effort by all of their bowlers. Best figures were Dan Hewitt with 2-19

and Hewson Whiting 2-23. Wainui made easy work of the target reaching it in 31 overs with three wickets down. Man of the match was Tim Wilson, who batted through the innings to reach his hundred, finishing on 107 not out. The seconds started with a great win against Upper Hutt at home at Richard Prouse Park. Bowling first, Upper Hutt were bundled out quickly for 49, with Tanuj Ahuja debuting for the club and getting figures of 6-9. Wainui got the total comfortably with the loss of three wickets, with Cameron Williams scoring 32 not out. Wainui Premier Reserve will play the Sri Lankan Cricket Club this week at Richard Prouse Park.
