Reporting not up to scratch Continued from page 1 An independent peer review found the standard had been interpreted incorrectly by Tonkin and Taylor and found that they implemented methodology incorrectly.

The Community Liaison Group has been battling with the sites owners, The Hutt City Council, for a number of years and noise created by large trucks tailgate banging, reversing alarms and pumps from vac trucks throughout the day are causing concern.

In the recent report it was revealed noise level to be 52 decibels exceeding the consent conditions by 2 decibels but the

method in which the levels were taken was found to be incorrect.

A member of the Community Liaison Group Sally-Anne Moffat has gone to the trouble of testing the levels throughout the day herself and according to her readings the noise level is reaching around 62 decibels.

As a result of the recent review it has been decided noise monitoring will need to be done over a 48 hour period.

Sally-Anne also noted that on the day the original noise levels were taken the site was unusually quiet. A lack of good communication between the site owners and the Community

Liaison Group was also raised at a recent meeting by David Smith.

As part of the sites operations a wheel-wash was installed to try and keep dust levels down and any changes to the use of it should be passed on to the group in accordance with the audit.

Changes were made too when it was used in dry conditions and a member of the group raised this point stating that in good faith they should have been notified of the changes and according to the audit they should have been consulted.

“They should have come to us first and this is what I have been

saying all along, we need better communication from them,” David says.

Dust has also been raised as a concern. One member says there has been constant dust coating properties and inside dwellings.

With decks outside houses covered in dust and the potential for it to irritate respiratory problems the issue was raised and no resolution was found as the source of the dust could not be pin-pointed.

The logging of complaints with the council in relation to the clean-fill were also raised as not all complaints made to the council had been recorded.

Kiwi population on the rise Children sought for autism study

Results form the Remutaka Conservation Trust’s annual kiwi acoustic recorder (AR4) survey reveals an exciting rise in Kiwi numbers.

Recordings taken in the Remutaka Forest Park near Wainuiomata show from an initial population of 30 birds from Kiwi house releases from 2006-2008 and the Hauturu translocation in 2009 there has been a marked rise to 150 kiwi spreading rapidly through the Remutaka Forest Park and adjoining Greater Wellington water catchment.

The trust has reported they are about to remove the last few radio transmitters so the population will be monitored acoustically from now on.

The Remutaka Conservation Trust Kiwi Project has a trapping and tracking volunteer base of over 90.

The initial plan was to move a group (about 10 birds initially, in pairs) of North Island Brown kiwi from captivity in other locations nationwide to a 1000 hectare, predatorcontrolled site in the Remutaka Forest Park to establish a viable, self-sustaining Kiwi population.

Additional trap lines have since been extended into large areas of native bush bordering the original release area, providing plenty of space for the inevitable dispersal of our birds as the population increases. The trapped areas now extend over 7000 hectares.

While fully grown brown kiwi (birds over 1200 grams) are capable of defending themselves against attack by stoats, their eggs and young

chicks are vulnerable.

Remutaka Conservation Trust is the operating name for The Rimutaka Forest Park Charitable Trust Inc. and is a non-profit community group made up entirely of volunteers and members committed to protecting and restoring the beautiful Remutaka Forest Park located east of Wainuiomata The trust gives a big thanks to all who have helped with their volunteer time, advice and/or funding over the years.

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington educational psychologist and senior lecturer Dr Hannah Waddington is encouraging Wellington whanau of children aged 12–54 months on the autism spectrum to be part of a New Zealand-first clinical study.

“Most studies using the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) to support children on the spectrum were done overseas and involved several years of therapy for more than 20 hours a week.

We want to see if only three hours a week of therapy and parent support over a six-month period improves outcomes for children and their whanau,” the University’s School of Education, Dr Waddington says.

The ESDM uses play to build positive relationships and aims to boost child language, social, and cognitive

skills. This is the first study of this scale and rigour in New Zealand and its design allows the researchers to determine properly whether it is the therapy itself that is leading to improvements.

“The establishment of the Victoria University of Wellington Autism Clinic in 2018 enables this type of research. The study is in line with our goal of doing high-quality research and ensuring theory is translated into practical help that will work in New Zealand.

“We know that currently families with children on the spectrum are not getting the help they need.

They need further support across important areas such as social communication, interaction with peers, and play skills,” he says.

The personal inspiration for Dr Waddington to pursue an academic career study-

ing autism came from her family, some of whom are on the spectrum. Growing up, she saw how little support and advice they received from professionals and resolved to dedicate herself to doing something about this. It is estimated 1 in 59 children will be diagnosed with autism.

“The research begins with us assessing the needs of the child and their whanau, beginning by playing with the child, getting to know them, and choosing priority goals in their development.

Then we target each therapy session to these goals,” she says.

The research was awarded $250,000 by the Health Research Council of New Zealand last year, with the study funded to continue over three years.

Finalist in bus design competition Four young artists from Hutt Valley learned they are one step closer this week to seeing their design turned into a real-life Metlink bus.

The ‘Design a Metlink bus’ competition, part of Metlink’s contribution to this year’s Brendan Foot Supersite (BFS) Round the Bays festivities, saw hundreds of kids put colouring pencil to paper in a bid to design their very own Metlink bus.

Fifteen designs from tamariki across the region made it onto the shortlist, including Hutt Valley artists Harry (7), Sasha (5), Kelcie (11) and Tobias (3).

Greater Wellington councillor and Transport Committee chair Roger Blakeley was floored by the number and quality of the designs submitted.

“Wellington is chock-full of incredibly talented young bus design-

ers. It was great to see aroha for our region and te taiao in the entries we received, along with abstract pieces with brilliant bursts of colour that I interpreted as a nod to Wellington’s wild landscapes.

“In fact there were so many fantastic designs that we had to bend the rules of the competition, we’ll now be choosing two winning designs to be turned into bus wrappings instead of one.

“On top of that, we want to give all the shortlisted entries their wellearned spot in the limelight, so all of these designs will be turned into posters that will brighten up bus shelters all around the region,” says Cr Blakeley.

Adshels featuring the shortlisted entries will go up in bus shelters across the region in late April.

Eyelash serum risks Eyelash serums promising lush lashes are heavily promoted but people buying these products aren’t getting good information about the risks, Consumer NZ says.

Some eyelash serums contain ingredients called prostaglandins, which have the potential to cause nasty side effects.

Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said the European Commission recently launched an investigation into the safety of prostaglandins in cosmetics after reports of “serious undesirable effects”, including swollen eyelids and burning eyes.

Another product, Revitalash, claimed on its website “there is no potential for the serum to have a significant effect on those breastfeeding, pregnant or undergoing chemotherapy”. The company didn’t provide evidence to Consumer NZ to support these

Biophos: By Wally Richards

There are three basic nutrients for plants that are shown as N.P.K with numbers to reflect the percentage of each such as 10:8:10 ….nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).

Phosphorus stimulates budding and blooming. Plants need phosphorus to produce fruits, flowers, and seeds. It also helps make your plants more resistant to disease. Phosphorus doesn’t dissolve like nitrogen. The soil will hang onto phosphorus, not releasing it into water. Phosphate is needed by all life forms but if taken in too greater quantities it becomes harmful. In the distant past phosphorus was obtained from manures especially bird or bat droppings called guano.

Phosphorus was also obtained from Reactive Rock Phosphate which is a hard phosphatic rock. In most soils it dissolves very slowly. To make the rock phosphate more readily available to plants people discovered a process of using sulfuric acid, early in the 1900’s and a new agricultural fertiliser was created called Super or Super Phosphate.

It became a boon to agriculture and farming with tons of Super been spread to cause fast growth in fields and crops.

Unfortunately like a number of discoveries such as DDT and Asbestos, there was a hidden price to pay.

Superphosphate kills soil life and with their demise leads to unhealthy plants.

Not only that, it was also found that super laden plants and grasses caused

health problems in stock including cancers. Now days I would never use a chemical fertiliser or chemical sprays including any herbicides anywhere on my property.

But I have noticed that even though I obtain good healthy crops and plants, there is some factor that appears to be missing and the crops are not as lush as I feel they could be. I have often thought that I am not getting sufficient phosphorus in my composts and mulches. This caused me to do a bit of research on the Internet and found to my delight a company in New Zealand who make a product called BioPhos.

They take the rock phosphate and break it down naturally with microorganisms making it as readily available to plants as Super is without the bad side effects in the soil.

The company sent me an email booklet and it showed trials that proved that not only did BioPhos work like Super, but actually better as it did not have a ‘peak’ growth on application and gave a much longer sustained release of phosphorus to plants. Instead of killing soil life it actually supplies new micro-organisms to the soil which carry on breaking the natural phosphorus down, meaning that only one application is needed per year unless you are cropping during the winter as well. Some rose growers and rose societies recommend using BioPhos for better, healthier roses.

BioPhos contains phosphate, potas-

sium, sulphur and calcium at the rates of 12.5%p 33%cu 1%s BioPhos is Bio Certified for organic growing.

It is pH neutral and used at the following rates: New beds work in 100 grams per square metre, the same with lawns but water in to settle.

Side dressing plants; seedlings 8 grams (a teaspoon full) around base of the plant or in the planting hole.

Same for potatoes (which do well with phosphorus).

Sowing beans peas etc sprinkle down row with seeds. Roses and similar sized plants 18 grams or a tablespoon full around plant or in planting hole.

Established fruit trees etc. spread at the rate of 100 grams per square metre around drip line or where feeder roots are. Apply to vegetable gardens in spring and a further application in autumn if growing winter crops.

Can be applied to container plants also. Apply to tomatoes when planting or side dress existing plants.

I receive reports sometimes from gardeners that have tried BioPhos and they tell me that their gardens have really come to life after application. So if you think your plants and gardens are not quite up to scratch then it might be a bit of natural phosphorus from BioPhos might make the world of difference Problems?

Wainuiomata AFC vs Napier City Rovers AFC Saturday saw the return of Central League football for the first time in 25 years.

A large crowd gathered on a typically fine day at Richard Prouse park, to see our lads go head to head with a Napier Team full of stars.

It was a great game, played at a blistering pace, which provided awesome entertainment for an edgy crowd, which were vocal throughout the game.

A fine goal set up by ex Wainui player from last year Kailan Gould, saw the visitors take the lead. A dubious penalty and a tap in saw Wainui head into halftime 3-0 down.

The second half saw Napier tire which allowed wainui more ball,

but they still held on with a final score of 5 1 at full time. The goal came from an outstanding header from Ben Stroud.

A fair result in the end with lots of good things for Wainui to take from the game and work on for the next game against Waterside Karori on Easter Friday at 3.00pm.

TJ’s waiata a winner Teremoana Crawford aka TJ May Crawford sends out the message of aroha through her waiata and wins 3rd place in the Rangatahi category of the ETW Song Comp 2020.

Fourteen year-old Teremoana (Ngati Porou) of Wainuiomata has taken out third place in the Rangatahi Category of this year’s E T Whanau Song Competition, with her soulful entry, Can You Hear Me? Her beautiful waiata of aroha inspires positive change in people throughout Aotearoa and beyond, offering, whanaungatanga and manaakitanga as the best responses to our troubled world.

Like many other rangatahi today, Teremoana has found her voice and is using it to call for change though her music. Indeed, her vocal style is direct and straight from the heart, weaving strength and conviction throughout Can You Hear Me? The idea for her song came from concern at the way of the world today, she says. However, Can You Hear Me? is the result of collaboration with her whanau. Working with her parents and brother, she was able to produce a waiata full of her own personality in the lyrics.

In Teremoana Crawford’s whare, music has always brought people together for good times. Her

parents are her biggest musical inspiration, she says, but her whole whanau has encouraged her to keep learning the piano, singing and making original music.

Although this is the first time she has entered the E T Whanau song competition, she has already begun establishing herself in the online musical world, and in original-song competitions.

Earlier this year, she found success in the Flava Radio song competition. Since then, she has been warmly received in competitions run out of the USA, winning the Maze Radio Top Artist, and The Greengame Track Battle.

The 24th Mountain running champs are being hosted by the Wainuiomata Harrier Club in conjunction with Athletics Wellington on April 10.

The Championships will take place on the hills between Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt City with the race Headquarters at Wainuiomata High School, Gymnasium Parkway Road Wainuiomata.

All entrants must report to Race Headquarters between 11:30am and 12:30pm on race day to sign in and receive a Race Number to be worn on the front of their singlet.

Races start and finish at the new Parkway Rise Subdivision – Car-park with the start and finish within easy walking distance from the High School, approximately 400m along Parkway Road.

Age is as at the end of this

year, 31 December 2021, but age on the day of race for master’s runners.

Grades Girls and Boys U10, Girls and Boys U12, Girls and Boys U14, Girls and Boys U16, Junior Women and Men U18, Junior Women and Men U20, Open Women and Men 20-34, Masters Women and Men 35-49, Masters Women and Men 50-59, Masters Women and Men 60+.

Medals are awarded to the first 3 Wellington Inter-Club members in each grade.

Guest medals will also be awarded for non-inter-club members who place in the top 3 in any grade.

Queen Club of the mountain and King Club of the mountain will be determined with points being awarded to finishes in each grade Junior Women and Junior Men and above, 10 for first, 9 for

2nd, 8 for 3rd, down to 1 for 10th and all other places.

The top 6 female finishes from each club (but no more than 3 from any 1 grade) will be determined and have their points added to get the clubs score. The same will be done for male finishes.

The clubs with the highest scores shall be crowned Queen Club of the Mountain and King Club of the Mountain. If two clubs end with the same score, the top 5 will be used, then 4 etc to determine the winning club.

Girls and Boys in grades under 16 years of age count for the combined Princess and Prince Club of the Mountain award. Inter-club and non-inter-club members may count.

Entrants are encouraged to pre-enter on-line by Thursday April 8, 8pm.

On the day entries will be accepted between 11:30am and 12:30pm.

Moment of the decade fades to obscurity The Halberg Sports Awards fumbled the ball again thanks to a public vote which made little sense.

Last Wednesday, the top athletes and moments of the past decade were celebrated and while male athlete Richie McCaw and female athlete Lisa Carrington made sense, the sporting moment of the decade was baffling at best.

Rowers Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan won the honour for their gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Taking nothing away from the pair of them, they had to scratch and claw to earn their chance just to make that Olympic campaign, let alone gain the gold medal but very few sport tragics would have

remembered it.

Sullivan, a native of Picton has been a part of Team New Zealand’s recent America’s Cup defence so he has moved on to bigger and better things.

Off the top of my head, the 2011 Rugby World Cup final victory, the Grant Elliott six in the semifinal of the Cricket World Cup at Eden Park in 2015 or Brendon McCullum’s 300 in 2014 against India at the Basin Reserve all live longer in the memory.

Those trio of moments are ones where you remember where you were and who you were with when they happened.

That World Cup was intense from start to finish.

Every No 10 we had was injured

to the point where we had to stop Stephen Donald from whitebaiting to wear a jersey which was three sizes too small for him so he could shave a penalty inside the right post to help us claim an 8-7 win and our first Webb Ellis Cup in 24 years.

The 2015 Cricket World Cup was the best sporting event I’ve seen on home soil.

Grant Elliott’s six in a tense semifinal against his place of birth, South Africa, had everything.

It removed our semifinal chokers tag and proved the Black Caps were a legit team.

The tense nature of that game made for unmissable television.

During that final over, where Dan Vettori squirted a boundary

behind point which was crucial and potentially forgotten in the lead-up to Elliott’s maximin, I had to call a friend just to calm myself.

When the ball sailed into the stands you could see strangers hugging each other and I furiously found match tickets and flights to Melbourne for the final.

McCullum’s 300 was a sublime knock and one which matured cricket in this country.

For so long, Martin Crowe’s 299 had been the benchmark and there were long lines for the opening session of day five when McCullum was on 270-odd when play resumed.

Just like Elliott’s six, Ian Smith’s commentary was perfect for the moment and ensured it would live

long in the memory of those who witnessed it.

Public votes are always subjective and in a funny way, I guess we have no-one to blame but ourselves for this outcome but only die-hard rowers could make a case for Cohen and Sullivan.

It’s likely symptomatic with the awards ceremony which has lost the interest of the general public.

It has lost its lustre and become stale.

A myriad of confusing decisions over the years have likely meant people no longer see it as a pinnacle event.

A revamp is necessary and outcomes like this, even in a public vote, do little to help the credibility of the event.

First victory for Parliament Cricket team With near perfect conditions for a show down with the media the Parliament Cricket team came up trumps for the first time with a victory.

Going into bat first the parliament team with local MP’s Chris Bishop and Ginny Andersen they scored a respectable 161/4 from 25 overs with openers James Meager and Vincent Ringrose both retiring after scoring 50 runs.

The Media team got off to a great start - being 108/2 after just 12 overs but some tight bowling and great fielding from the Parliament team saw them bowled out for 155 in the 23rd over - victory by just 6 runs.

Parliament has had some form of cricket team since at least 1884.

Team alumni include Sir Robert Muldoon, Rt. Hon. Sir Geoffrey Palmer, Jim Anderton, Rt. Hon Bill English, Sir Roger Douglas and Sir Joseph Ward.

Parliament XI usually play three

or four matches a year - the most prominent being the annual fixture against diplomats, stationed in the capital. There’s even a shield for the occasion - the Wood Shield ‘Parliamentarians vs Diplomats’, presented in 1974 by H. E. J. De Silva Malaysian High Commissioner for annual competition.

The shield was passed to the Parliamentary Collection for safe keeping in December 2015, and currently hangs in the Members’ Lounge, after Hon. Kris Faafoi MP and Chris Bishop MP co-captained the Parly XI to victory in December 2017.

Parliamentarians from across all parties participate in matches for charity and MPs have the opportunity to approach local charities and cricket teams, and cricket teams from around the country have the opportunity to challenge the Parliamentarians and host them in The Parliament Cricket Team with local MP’s Ginny Andersen and Chris Bishop in the front row. their own town.

Preseason opener for Lions A preseason game for the Fulton Hogan Wainuiomata Lions saw them take on the St George Dragons and the opportunity to engage in contact and match fitness prior to season commencement.

It enabled the lions to try new combinations and observe player positions and adjustments to work on prior to kick off of the full season.

Coaches were impressed with new players coming through the ranks with twins, Te Manutai and Takarei Awa both bringing a change in

dynamic in support play.

Another first time senior player Coby Apanui worked hard in the off season to build his fitness and strength and was rewarded on the weekend when his on field support enabled him to receive the ball, find the gap and secure a rewarding try.

Second rower Conan Burt was another inspiring player on the day with consistent involvement on defense.

Wainuiomata senior men’s rugby league Team extend a warm welcome to all pas-

sionate league supporters keen to join them this year to help give them that extra push.

The aim is to finally bring that title home.

If there are any men interested in playing this season, trainings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm Wise Park, There is still time to join the team and be part of our 2021 campaign.

After this opening match the Lions are now back to training and continue to build for a great season ahead.
