Shrek is among us

By Glenise Dreaver

Everyone’s favourite Ogre is bringing his particular brand of humour to Porirua from mid-November – and with the help of a slew of committed northern suburbs performers.

Based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name. Shrek the Musical tells the story of the reluctant hero who leads a cast of fairy-tale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Continued on page 2.

Colleen Wilton of Newlands, at left, plays the Guard and Peter Pan in the Porirua Little Theatre’s production of Shrek the Musical. Colleen’s son Jet plays Shrek Jr and the Grumpy Dwarf. Isaac Andrews of Johnsonville plays Donkey, while Jodie Mahan of Tawa has three roles, Mama Shrek, Wicked Witch and Thelonius. PHOTO supplied.

Community theatre at its best Continued from page 1. Part romance, part twisted fairy tale, it is a wryly funny show with a powerful message for the whole family. The Porirua Little Theatre production features nine performers from the northern suburbs, part of a cast of 24 aged eight and up. Absent from our front page photo were Tania Parker of Crofton Downs who is

Dragon and Mama Bear, Izzie Kemp of Wadestown who plays Teen Fiona and Elf and William Bain of Khandallah, the White Rabbit. Many take on several roles, acting, singing and dancing in more than 45 different parts. The energetic cast are also finding themselves puppeteering and moving sets, because that’s what com-

munity theatre is all about. Director Rob Or msby, who also directed the Little Theatre’s sell out production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, says he is thrilled to be bringing this familiar tale to audiences in a new and exciting way. “The story of Shrek carries a profound message of acceptance no matter

who you are and what you look like. It’s also extremely funny with plenty of laughout-loud moments and toetapping songs for the whole family to enjoy.” Shrek the Musical is on at Black Hawk Exhibition Centre /The N.Z. Kennel Club, 11 Prosser St, Porirua from November 14 to 30. For bookings: https://tickets. porirualittletheatre.co.nz.

“Don’t you all agree that Winston Peters should get a knighthood?” Rob Julian from Ohariu Toastmasters bellowed to members of Churton Park, Ngaio, and Newlands Toastmasters. ‘NO!’ everyone shouted back. The local toastmaster clubs

were having a session of Soapbox Oratory outside the BNZ in Johnsonville Road on the Saturday morning of Labour Weekend. “It was great fun” said Rizza Ota, a Japanese/Brazilian member from Newlands Toastmasters. “I never would

have dreamed I would have the courage to get up and speak in such a public space, but I did it.” Subjects ranged from moving the city council to Johnsonville, to what to do about the Johnsonville Mall. The daughters of the Ohariu club president Edwin Rakanui, even got up to tell

everyone why they must listen to their children, to rapturous applause. Passers-by stopped to ask what on earth was going on and occasionally joined in the cheering, clapping, and booing. And there was no mention of the All Blacks.

inbrief news Police campaign focuses on tattoos The new Police recruitment video and campaign –The Ink Beneath the Blue - invites the public into the lives of some of the officers who literally wear their hearts on their sleeves. It’s the stories and very personal experiences behind why they got their unique tattoos, combined with the training provided by police, which equip these officers to police more effectively and empathetically in our diverse communities. All police staff were invited to participate in the campaign and an unprecedented number put their hands up to tell their stories. While the great majority of recruits already have a tattoo it is still one of the most commonly asked questions of the recruitment team. NZ Police has set itself a target of transforming its workforce so that it fully reflects the communities it serves. Watch the new recruitment video here: https://youtu.be/NcrlvSdMXtM

New Hutt Mayor

Ex-Mayor’s challenge fails to stop ceremony By Glenise Dreaver

Despite the electoral challenge being mounted by Wellington’s former Mayor Justin Lester, last night’s inauguration of Mayor-elect Andy Foster, his chosen deputy Sarah Free and the city councillors went ahead. Wellington City Council chief executive Kevin Lavery says a Wellington District Court judge is expected to decide next week on whether a recount can proceed Last Friday, he said that Justin Lester had filed an application for a recount of

votes. They expected to have a Court decision next week on whether that would be granted he said. If it were, this might take some time, he added. They had, he said, sought legal advice because the Mayor, councillors, committees and council needed to be fully empowered. “Otherwise I would be solely responsible for all major decisions for an extended period.” They would not therefore postpone the inauguration he said, adding that any decisions made will then be lawful, regardless of the Court’s

decision. The judge has looked at the initial application and asked for a report from the chief electoral officer before making a decision on whether a recount should be held. Motukairangi-Eastern Ward councillor Sarah Free was sworn in as Deputy Mayor, with Andy describing her as experienced and personable, someone who will bring the necessary leadership skills to the role. “She is a popular, honest and hard-working councillor with strong people skills, and a real heart for our city.

WHY PAY KENNEL OR CATTERY FEES?

The new Hutt City Mayor, Campbell Barry of Wainuiomata, was sworn in, along with the rest of the Hutt City Council, at a ceremony at Waiwhetu marae on Wednesday last week. The Deputy Mayor is Tui Lewis, a former Wainuiomata resident.

“We may not have exactly similar political leanings but we both care about important issues for Wellington – for example the environment and transport – so I’m confident Sarah and I can work well together.” Andy says there is a long and healthy history of Wellington mayors choosing councillors with different political leanings to their own as deputies. “It helps build a council team and also recognises that Wellington is a city with a politically-aware and diverse community.”

inbrief news Subway fights need Subway outlets in Johnsonville Karori and Tawa are three outlets in the nationwide chain once again tackling hunger across the country on World Sandwich Day, Friday November 1. Every guest who visits one of the three outlets on the day and purchases a sub, wrap, or salad will get another one free. As well, Subway will donate a meal through KiwiHarvest, the national food rescue charity. In 2018, over 100,000 meals were donated across the country and in 2019, they aim for 150,000 meals.

Wellington Heritage Week Three historic residences in Thorndon will be open at 14 St Mary’s Street between 1-4pm on Saturday November 2: the Randell Cottage, the Lilburn Residence, and the Rita Angus Residency. Visitors will be able to walk through and chat with the stewards of each house about history of the residences and the association with New Zealand artists, composers, and authors, and their current use. The event is free and no booking is required.

Daran Ponter GWRC chair Greater Wellington Regional Council elected its new chair and deputy chair yesterday as the newly-formed council met for the first time following local elections. Daran Ponter was voted chair and Adrienne Staples as deputy, both being unopposed. Cr Ponter said that as a regional council they are the environment protection authority, the river control authority, the park ranger, the pest management board, the harbour master, the owners of the Port of Wellington and the public transport agency. “For all these things, our single greatest challenge is climate change and this means working closely with iwi, communities, business, government and local councils on joint solutions.”

Unique Matsuri festival at Crofton Downs School Crofton Downs Primary School is preparing for one of its biggest days of the year, their Matsuri Gala. It’s on Sunday November 10, from 11am to 2pm. “At Matsuri, our primary focus is on fun and food,” says Wendy Anscombe, the overall event organiser. Matsuri is Japanese for ‘the festival,” and that means a unique Japanese flavour to the fair, with special cultural performances and Japanese food and stalls from their on-site Japanese School. Wendy says attractions will also include their “infamous” horizontal bungy run, pirate cannons, trampolines, bouncy castle, their new orienteering maze and a return of the archery activity. “Soft tipped arrows!” she adds, saying they are being helped in this by their friends from Ngaio Scouts. As always, there is a Matsuri cafe, with home baking and other treats, and there will be non-stop entertainment from local talent. Local Police will have a presence too and children can ride in the cars, run against their speed cameras – and even meet an armed offenders squad member. ”Fully kitted out,” Wendy

These young singers from the In Vivo Studio in Crofton Downs enjoyed a Halloween party in the studio gardens before their practice for the local school’s Matsuri Gala. adds. “And kids of all ages can build and conduct in our train room, with metres of track and piles of trains,” she says. One key aspect of the day is that they are building on last year’s success in cutting

down on waste. “We really want people to bring their own bags and cups,” says Wendy. “As well as using the excellent event waste bins from Wellington City Council, we’re also looking to change

how a lot of our food is served - Think, less plastic! “And we’re going to have a ‘wash against waste’ station as part of our café,” she adds. “This means we will have reusable crockery and cutlery on offer to everyone.”

Books donated for prisoners Inspector Rob Sum, who manages the Mental health and Community Services team at Police National Headquarters, is organising the pick-up of some 50 boxes of unsold books from the Karori Normal School fair on October 19. The school principal, Conrad

Kelly, was happy when approached that they be donated for the use of those who are detained in police cells after arrest. “Besides giving detainees an opportunity to read and learn something, books enable them to help them cope with their

situation and can help deal with anxiety about being in a police cell, and keep them calm,” says Inspector Sum. “Our staff working in the cells also benefit and have an extra resource to help them manage people who have been detained.

“It also means Police can ensure we look after our longerduration prisoners better from a human rights perspective.” Any excess of books may be donated to the Night Shelter, Women’s Refuge and Oranga Tamariki for their secure homes.

Church rewarded after three-year wait By Glenise Dreaver

After waiting nearly three years for a new full-time minister, Johnsonville Uniting Church members are celebrating the arrival of Leanie Lemner, who arrived in the parish from South Africa on October 1. Leanie had already been in the ministry for six years in Pretoria, though at the end of last year after marrying Edward, an electrical engineer, she moved to the small petroleum mining community of Secunda. With no ministry position there, she started counselling at the local high school, and began a diploma in pastoral counselling, study now being done via Skype. “I have a class every Tuesday at 6.30am,” she says. Leanie says they always wanted to work overseas, but were waiting a year before they looked. Then, out of the blue, Edward was found on Linked In by a Wellington firm and offered a job. Things started to move, so Leanie e mailed The Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. A member of the Dutch Reformed Church she had, she says, trained with Presbyterian trainees. “So I knew the theology was closely aligned.” Soon she was offered two positions and chose Johnsonville. A good choice, she says. Already she loves it. “We can feel it, touch it, taste it, that we are part of this community. We are so not alone.” Leanie has a strong interest in the concept of companionship. “At various stages of life. “This is an area where we as a congregation can have a big impact,” she says. She adds, however that you never want to come from outside with fixed ideas. “I’m very, very new.” They are finding the transition to this country smooth, and she’s loving the diversity here. “Kiwis are very open to that.”

These students are already our present says MP While the catch-cry might be that children are the future, the talent and commitment of so many young New Zealanders across our communities would suggest they are every bit our present as well. That was the message of Brett Hudson, National List MP based in Ohariu, last Wednesday evening at the Johnsonville Youth Grants Awards. Thirty two students from Onslow, Newlands and Tawa colleges were recognised for outstanding achievements across a range of interests. From academic results, through sports, culture, social issues and community, the achievements of those students have been exceptional and so worthy of the recognition and rewards they received.

“Not only have they excelled themselves, their example serves to inspire others to strive and to achieve in their interest,” Brett said. The Johnsonville Youth Grants award recipients cash grants recognising outstanding achievement. This year, the 34th grants award ceremony, saw $45,000 awarded to thirty two local students. Instituted in 1987, the Johnsonville Youth Grants Trust was set up by Chris and Helen Kirk-Burnnand and is supported by their wider family, Mark and Jess, along with a group of loyal sponsors. “It is their commitment to youth that has seen recognition of our local achievers for thirty four years,” says Brett.

Concert by local harpist Lovers of harp music will, on Sunday November 3, have the opportunity to hear harpist Tiffany Baker of Churton Park at a house concert in Ngaio. Tiffany plays triple and lever harps and her solo concert will feature pieces from different eras and genres.

“Classical, South American, pop, jazz and easy listening,” says Tiffany. The concert will be held on Sunday from 2.30pm – 3.45 p.m with tickets $22 for an adult and $10 for a child. To book, email her at harp@baker. org.nz Amber Zhu of Newlands College with MP Brett Hudson, who presented her with a Johnsonville Youth Grants Award for her academic achievements. She has also been an international student buddy, a form representative, and a peer support leader and tutor. PHOTO supplied. Becca Ritchie of Tawa entertained the award winners and their supporters at the Johnsonville Youth awards ceremony.

www.ramada-wellington.eventbrite.co.nz Please RSVP by Friday 1 November 2019 Wadestown library staff members Tim Daniel and Celia Lillis flank Community Centre Advocate Louise Davies, all delighted to see the defibrillator just outside the library’s front entrance. Tim holds the spare key which will be kept by the library desk. John Browning, absent when the photo was taken, was also a key mover in the installation of this community asset. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver.

Wadestown lifesaver Wadestown Community has a new AED (Automated external defibrillator) unit now available 24/7 for access by the community in the event of a cardiac emergency. Wadestown Community Centre Advocate Louise Davies, who co-ordinated the project, says it has just been installed at the entrance to Wadestown library on the corner of Moorhouse Street and Lennel Road. The unit can, she says, be easily seen in its “High Viz” yellow weatherproof cabinet just beside the entrance to the library. The unit inside the cabinet can be accessed with a key kept in a small glass

portal beside it. Simple instructions for how to use the unit are automatically issued once the defib unit is opened and, Louise says, all library staff have either been trained in its use, or are soon to have training. The installation is the culmination of a joint project between Wadestown library who supplied the defibrillator and funded the installing of the cabinet, Wadestown Combined Community Groups, The Village Green and Highland Park Progressive Association and Wadestown Residents’ Association supplied funding for the weatherproof cabinet itself.

Concert in Hall of Memories A Voix de femmes’ concert, at 3pm on Sunday November 24 in the Hall of Memories, is devoted to Saint Anne, patron saint of Brittany. It also recalls Anne de Bretagne, an early Queen Consort of France. “The awesome acoustic of the Hall of Memories (War Memorial) is sure to give the audience a time of serenity as the busy end-of-year bustle gets closer,” says Voix de femmes’ conductor Marie Brown. Voix de femmes, which includes among its number ten members from the northern and western suburbs, will open the concert with Breton composer Guy Ropartz’s Mass in honour of Saint

Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. The programme, interspersed with French poetry, will continue with some beautiful songs to the Virgin Mary, daughter of Saint Anne, and a fifteenth century folk song about Anne de Bretagne. Flautist Rebecca Steel is being welcomed back to play again. The concert starts at 3pm, but those who arrive early will have a chance to enjoy the weekly half-hour recital by Wellington’s carillonist at 2.30pm. The $20 tickets are available only through contacting the choir at 04 476 9062. Numbers are limited, and there are strictly no door sales.

Two states not one Dear Editor The Independent Herald has recently run full page advertisements justifying the right of Israel to survive as a Jewish state. Your readers may not readily perceive from the advertisements that in Israel and Israel-occupied territories there is a large non-Jewish population, which also has a right to self-determination. Israel and the occupied territories (including Gaza) are collectively home

to at least 6.8 million Jews and at least 5.8 million Arabs. If Israel is to remain a Jewish state it cannot incorporate the whole of this non-Jewish population. The practical and ethical alternative is to establish a viable independent Arab state alongside the Jewish state, a goal New Zealand supports. There is no space in this letter to detail the many obstacles to this, only to remind the reader that Israel

The advertisement does not address this conundrum, but it is this, not the specifics of campaigns hostile to Israel, that is at the heart of the dilemma. Malcolm McKinnon Wellington

Tiny chicks hatched at Zealandia Titipounamu chicks have hatched at Zealandia ecosanctuary, a great start for the establishment of a viable population of Aotearoa’s smallest native bird here in Wellington. Rangers have found seven nests with incubating eggs, two in provided nest boxes and the rest in natural nests. Sixty titipounamu (rifleman) were introduced to Zealandia from the Wainuiomata Mainland Island in March, in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council. “It’s very exciting that we have discovered fledglings and eggs this early in the breeding season. The titipounamu are absolutely making themselves at home in Zealandia,” says spokesperson Dr Danielle Shanahan. “Those birds building their nests in the boxes provided will allow Zealandia staff to monitor them very closely,” Danielle says. “Our follow up surveys suggest at least half the titipounamu are settling in well in the valley,” she says. There are also a few birds that have flown just outside the sanctuary, with some sighted in the adjacent Birdwood Reserve she adds. “We hope they continue to breed successfully both inside and out, helped by rat and stoat control done by the community,” Danielle says.

The tiny titipounamu, or rifleman, appears to be thriving since being shifted to Zealandia, with a number of nests sighted. The tiny birds, relataed to the New Zealand rock wren, grow only to 7 - 9 cm and weigh approximately 6gm. This South Island specimen is a male. PHOTO: Janice McKenna

PETONE

Celebrating 25 years of success When Leo O’Sullivan and his brother Keiran opened the Petone Pak’nSave, it was only the third one of the chain in Wellington and the twenty first in the country. The owner-operated business has thrived and grown. Keiran left 13 years ago to open the Pak’nSave in Lower Hutt. He kept up the family tradition, taking some of the first dayers with him – and like Leo still has quite a number there. Leo’s two sons now work there. Ben, now store manager, was only nine when it opened while Angus, dry goods manager, was only seven. Reflecting on the passing of time, Leo says: “Rebecca our service delicatessen manager wasn’t even born when we opened in 1994!” They were always an innovative business. In 2001, they started one of the first Shop’n’go systems in New Zealand, letting customers scan and pay for their own groceries. (In those days, you were allocated a little plastic barcode card to swipe, attached to your keyring.) There was a major refurbishment in 2002, when the size of the building was increased by over a third. And in 2012 the carpark was covered which gives protection from the winter southerlies.

A thank you

The O’Sullivan family are preparing to celebrate twenty five years in the Petone Pak’nSave store. From left are Ben, store manager, Leo, owner and Angus, dry goods manager.

Petone Pak’nSave owner Leo O’Sullivan has a huge thank you for the community of loyal customers and suppliers who have supported them over the twenty five years they have been in business. Their anniversary, being celebrated in the first week of November, will not only be marked by extra-special specials, but a large birthday cake for sampling. A wide range of sporting competitions at national and international level have always been celebrated in the Pak’nSave. World Cup campaigns, Olympic Games, and other major sporting events see the store decorated inside and out with support banners, photos and posters. “Sport brings people together,” says Leo. And that’s why this business is much more than just a business. It’s about the opportunity to celebrate success and build a sense of community.

“This was the number one request from our customers after our first winter,” says Leo. There has, also over the years, been a dramatic growth in the number of products, and a move into specialty lines, with more emphasis on gluten free, organic and vegan foods, as well as international food items.

25

Leo enjoys the independence the owner-operated model gives them, saying it allows them to head off bureaucracy and make their own decisions about products, prices and promotions. “It means what we do is tailored for our local customers’ needs,” he says.

YEAR

ANNIVERSARY

There from the start: Eight of the nine Petone Pak’nSave staff who will complete twenty five years at the store this November. Standing from left are Jenny Thomas, Kelly James, owner Leo O’Sullivan, John Dahm, Ray Chan Tung, Joe Moalar with Lita West at front. Seated: Lorraine Tiriha and Ruby Tekahika. Absent: Barbara Dahm. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver

First day staff remember how it all began Petone Pak’nSave checkout upervisor Jenny Thomas went home on the day the Petone Pak’nSave opened in November 1994 and told her husband she wasn’t going back. “So did I,” says colleague Lorraine Tiriha. And checkout manager Ruby Tekahika, another “first dayer” - and like the first two also

from Wainuiomata - says: “It was the worst day of my whole life.” That was the day the EFTPOS system went down nationwide. “And the next day,” says owner Leo O’Sullivan. “It was gridlock in here.” The tills could only take cash sales, or the old zip-zap machines used for credit cards in those days.

And some items wouldn’t scan. “So we just gave them to the customers” says Leo. Jenny, Lorraine and Ruby, all from Wainuiomata, say they worked two fourteen-hour days one after the other, while Leo didn’t sleep for two days. That first day there were queues out the door and ice cream was

melting in the trollies because of the wait. “Leo had to shut the doors in the end,” Ruby remembers. “I had to call the Police to shut off the car park,” Leo recalls. But all three women came back. “And we’re so glad we did,” Lorraine says. Why? Because, she says, they

have a wonderful boss. Ruby already knew that, because she had been working for Leo in his Wainuiomata supermarket. They agree it’s like a family. “We’re well cared for,” Lorraine says. “And I like seeing different people getting opportunities here that they might not get in other places.”

Communication is key when flooding is imminent, and four American students are in Lower Hutt working on the vital task of ensuring timely flood warnings get through to affected communities, focusing on neighbourhoods around the Waiwhetu Stream. The students, from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, are working with Greater Wellington and Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) on the pilot project, which is designed to improve local flood warning systems. Central to its approach is listening to the community’s views on its perception of the likelihood of flooding, the effectiveness of current warning systems and the best ways to make effective contact in the event of dangerously high flood levels.

An upswing in consents indicates our population is growing, and that more jobs in the building 13 and construction industry are being generated. This has a significant positive impact on people’s income and spending,” Helen says. As well as a rise in consents, council has also experienced an upswing in the volume of requests for building inspections. “There have been increases across all areas of development activity particularly planning and building inspections. A building boom is on the way for Lower Hutt, with consents and applications reaching an all-time high. By December 2018, building consents were up 18 per cent on 2017, with Hutt City Council issuing 1500 consents. Council had also received 529 resource consent applications, almost 45 per cent more on 2017, with many for new buildings such as multi-unit dwellings and new housing subdivisions. For December alone, 65 per cent more applications were received compared to the same time the previous year for processing by council staff. Double glazing gives school whole new look Tania Savage, principal at Cardinal McKeefry School in Wilton, says an amazing difference has been made to their classrooms with the completion of double glazing. “The tamariki are looking forward to sharing their new-look school with an array of visitors during the school’s Car Boot Sale on November 23,” she says. Room 4 students Edie and Frank were very excited about their new look classroom. “Edie likes how we can now slide the windows open instead of having to use a ladder to open then.

“Frank thinks the new window seat looks really cool and is soft to sit on,” says Tania. Over the past two terms Construct Ltd has systematically replaced the hall, classroom and reception 1960’s windows with double glazing. Tania had nothing but praise for the team, saying they were amazing to work with and kept disruptions to an absolute minimum. “We are preparing for our upcoming 50th Jubilee celebrations in 2020 and it is wonderful to see our buildings looking as great as the education we offer.”

Wellesley College in Eastbourne, which draws many of its students from the northern and western suburbs, is the first school in New Zealand to be using a newly developed bus app. The Australian app, called Roll Call, came into action this this week. It uses currently-available technology to log students on and off a bus, and keeps the school and parents informed of the bus’s location. It will even tell the bus driver that a student is not meant to get off at a particular stop, which is a valuable tool for younger pupils. The school’s parent community can have students as young as five travelling from

places like Thorndon, Karori and Crofton Downs. A school spokesperson says the system will add peace of mind for parents who can see when their son gets on the bus, where this bus is at all times and where he got off. RollCall will, she says, also greatly enhance their awareness of travelling students on all trips - whether it be to and from school, day excursions, or camps. Principal, Brendan Pitman, adds that the system will also allow them to respond if there is a natural disaster, and or, have the ability to note where students get on and off buses, so that if someone is non-contactable we have a good idea where to start looking.”

KAPITI

Kapiti Women’s Triathlon - a special event The Kapiti Women’s Triathlon, to be held on 23rd February 2020, is the longest-running women’s-only event in New Zealand. It remains an amazing ‘grass roots’ event for women, run by women with a low key fun and friendly approach where any woman can fi nd a challenge to suit them. One of the unique aspects of this event is the great Group training options available to everyone. From open water swim practices to cycle and run technique sessions and regular Sunday morning group swim sessions at Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Details can be found on the ‘Training’ page of kwt. org.nz website. Women can choose to take part in the full triathlon, a duathlon, a team event, a fun run or the sprint distance triathlon for those who wish to push themselves. The events are run in age group waves of 50 or less to avoid congestion. The first wave starts at 8.30 am with the Sprint Distance Triathlon (750 m/18 km/5 km) and duathlon (500 m/18 m /5 km). Further waves start at 9am, participants are

advised of their wave at registration. The minimum age for the swim and run/walk is eight years of age. The minimum age for the cycle is 12 years and entrants have to be familiar with riding on the road. Eight to 11-year-olds can form part of a two or three women team. “Get Mum to do the cycle leg for you” the organizers advise. If swimming or cycling don’t spin your wheels, there is the option to participate in the ‘Have a Go’ Fun Run/Walk event. Although this is a marshalled and marked course adults must take responsibility for minors at all times. The swim takes place in the sea by the old Raumati Pool. Consisting of a rectangular course with Paekakariki Surf Club members managing water safety. The KWT swim cap supplied must be worn. Novice swimmers anxious about the event may request a pink swim cap on their entry form and the Surf Club patrol will keep a special watch out. This option is not available for sprint distances though.

Kapiti Arts Trail gets underway this weekend and next

The Kapiti Arts Trail is when over 100 artists open their studio doors, or congregate in artists’ hubs and in galleries, to showcase a wonderfully wide range of art and artists living and working in the Kapiti district. The Trail offers visitors the opportunity to be part of the artists’ live creative process, and to view and purchase original local art. There is something for everyone - art that is traditional or cutting edge, soulsoothing or challenging, comfortable or provocative, decorative, awe-inspiring or functional. Visitors can also experience for themselves the wonderful natural environment that inspires so many of the Coast’s artists - beautiful bush-clad hills, fantastic parks and rivers, wide-open beaches, and of course the iconic and mysterious Kapiti Island. “The Arts Trail started off nearly 20 years ago, opening the doors to the community on the huge range of artistic talent

Michelle Retimana on the Coast,” says Rosie Salas, Arts, Museums, and Heritage Advisor at Kapiti Coast District Council. “It’s grown from

strength to strength, attracting visitors from the greater Wellington region and all over the country. It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend a weekend not just viewing art, but entering the creative spaces of the people who make it. For the artists, it’s a great way to make contact with their public.” Designed for use all year, the Kapiti Arts Guide provides a brief description of each site (artist studio, gallery, or hub), address and contact details, and maps showing how to get around in the district. Copies are available from libraries, i-sites and many other venues throughout the Wellington and neighbouring regions. Or go to Kapiti Arts Trail 2019 for more information, including individual artists’ pages with more examples of their artwork and an interactive map. Also follow the Kapiti Arts Trail Facebook and Instagram page for updates about the artists and “Arts Trail” hospitality specials.

History at your fingertips Archives Online is part of a wider programme to make Wellington City Council’s archives more accessible and to offer our services online. You’ll be able to search our holdings, from anywhere with an internet connection, anytime. Many of our digitised records are available for download (check the licence to see what kind of use is permitted). You’ll also soon be able to ask us to digitise a record for you, for a fee, through the service. Wellington City Archives has over 800,000 items in its collections. The earliest records date back to 1840 and

the most recent cover the present day. Information about all 800,000 records (metadata) is being progressively added to Archives Online, along with a digital copy of a record, where one is available. So far, about 15% of the holdings are digitised and we’ll get them online over the next few months. We’ll keep adding material, so check back if what you’re looking for isn’t here yet. If you can’t find what you’re looking for online, the original records can still be viewed at City Archives’ Wellington Office, by arrangement.

Early settlers and occupations

Looking back...

In 1886, the number of settlers living in the greater Wellington area was increasing. While the suburban areas around the City were filling up fast, the area to the north was still quite sparsely settled. At that time, the areas we know as Ngaio, Khandallah, Crofton, and the outskirts of Johnsonville, were known as Upper Kaiwarra and Ngahauranga. Kaiwarra was the settlers’ connotation of Kaiwharawhara (though Ngahauranga was referred to as such!). Occupations of these settlers make interesting reading. In Upper Kaiwarra, settlers were: Chris Aplin, farmer Benjamin Cummings, milkman James McPherson, farmer Mrs Berry, seamstress Thomas Harlen, farmer James Nairn, farmer John Bidmead, farmer Domingo Hobbs, farmer Henry White, farmer Mrs Casey, home help John Hume, tanner John Chew, timber merchant George Hobbs, ranger

New owners focus on food at The Innkeeper The Innkeeper Johnsonville has been undergoing something of a renaissance since a change of ownership earlier this year. New Manager Adam Cruz has brought back the traditional English pub atmosphere with a real focus on the food. Bacon Butties, Beef and Guiness Pie and a good old fashioned curry are some of the more popular items. The first to go at Wellington on a Plate was ‘Chicken Fried Steak’ with pea fritter which proved to be a winner with the locals. New owners Geoff and Michelle Potter have brought a real passion for the product too. An initial delve into whiskies has expanded the top shelf to over 30 brands with more to come, and now the attention is turning to gin, the most English of spirit! Toy Library By Glenise Dreaver

The Ngaio Toy Library is enjoying a real resurgence of interest and that was clear at the Meet the Members day held on Saturday October 26. It was a festive occasion, with coffee supplied by Café L’Affare and baking available for a gold coin koha. Callers had the chance to drop their coin into a jar to vote on toys that they’d like the toy library to purchase. Secretary Melissa Porritt says it was a chance for members to come together and share a cuppa, let the kids run around, and find out a bit more about the toy library. Much of the funding raised

will go towards purchasing new toys, she says, adding that at the last toy library committee meeting, a few principles on toy selections were agreed. “Durable toys that will last well, appeal to children between one and five years, are easy to clean, and are the kinds of things parents might not always choose to buy themselves. “We will also continue to refresh our collection of baby toys,” she says. “We would love to get your thoughts on what you’d like to see us purchase this year,” Melissa adds. “Check out the post on our Facebook page to have your say.”

Eight-year-old Elliott Otsuki enjoyed towing little brother Sebastian, aged three.

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

England, England, England It’s hard to remember a time when the All Blacks were more comprehensively outplayed than last Saturday night. England coach Eddie Jones said he had been planning for that Rugby World Cup semifinal for more than two years and now all of New Zealand believes it. Even the most ardent supporter of the men in black must concede when they woke up the next day that their team was out-thought,

out-muscled and out-passioned on the biggest stage. The 19-7 result will go down as one of England’s best and equally one of New Zealand’s most thorough defeats. There was no blaming the referee, no bounce of the ball that went their way, it was simply a clinical dissection of one of the most revered sports teams in the world. Kieran Read’s men were figura-

tively punched in the mouth from the opening whistle and never recovered. I have been a fan of the All Blacks for 25 years and I am struggling to think of a time when the team was so comprehensively outplayed in every facet like they were on Saturday night. I’ve never watched a playoff for third at a World Cup and that will not change, it is a meaningless game if ever there was one.

Perhaps a chance to give Ryan Crotty and Ben Smith a final game in black. On a side note, Scott Barrett, who I like as a player, was a failure at No 6. That does not mean he won’t one day be excellent at the position but he was in way over his head in that semifinal. To be fair to him, many of his more experienced teammates were blown off the park too.

Codie Taylor, Sam Whitelock and Jack Goodhue had their worst games in black but England simply didn’t allow anyone to shine. In essence they did to the All Blacks what the All Blacks have done to teams for the past decade. They humbled us early and stood on our throats for 80 minutes. Got to take that loss on the chin and thankfully it seems like many have.

Go by Bike Day celebrates growing pedal power

Go by Bike Day today, Thursday October 31 celebrates the growing number of Wellingtonians of all ages and abilities who are choosing to make some trips by bike. The annual event – on at Queens Wharf under the sails from 7am to 9am – has been brought forward to spring this year to tie in with the month-long Greater Welly BikeFest. There was free coffee, a bagel breakfast, and Dutch treats for anyone who arrived by bike, as well as giveaways, spot prizes and competitions. People could also get their bike fixed up or try out new bikes from local retailers. Wellington Mayor Andy Foster, known as a keen mountain biker himself, and the Ambassador for the Embassy of the Netherlands, Mira Woldberg, both arrived by bike and spoke at the event. Karen O’Leary, an early childhood teacher and on-screen police

officer in Wellington Paranormal and What We Do in The Shadows arrived by electric bike and MC’ed as Officer O’Leary. In her day job, she has in the last two years seen a growing number of children being transported to the ECE centre by bike. “About a quarter of our families regularly come by bike now, which has got to be a good thing for family health and fitness, and the environment.” Andy says biking, walking and catching public transport are all great ways to experience Wellington, factor some exercise into your day, and help the city reduce the emissions that cause climate change. “We have by far the highest proportion of trips by bike, on foot or by public transport – measured to work or education – of any part of New Zealand and that has grown every year since 1992. “As a city we’ve declared a cli-

Stadium climb for cancer Wellington residents and workplaces are now signing up for Stadium Climb, a new outdoor stair challenge where, on November 7, locals traverse the famous ‘cake tin’ venue to raise money for cancer patients. And Melissa Moon of Karori/Kelburn, is seriously thinking about being a starter. Earlier this year, the international elite athlete had come out of retirement, in May competing over the 86 floors of the international Empire State Building Challenge in New York - for the third time - as she raised money for the NZ Spinal Trust. (Independent Herald, p.1 May 22, 2019) T h e r e wa s d i s a p p o i n t m e n t , as the event organisers wouldn’t give her an elite start despite her winning the race twice and having one of the fastest times recorded.

“I asked three times but three times they refused.” So she had to start way back with about 400 other people. Melissa’s just heard about the cake tin event, and she’s keen. There are 4500 steps at Westpac Stadium and the event is being run for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). Peter Fergusson, the CEO, says their organisation receives no direct government funding, so Stadium Climb is essential to provide much-needed support for blood cancer patients in the Wellington region. “Money raised in Wellington stays in Wellington, providing emotional and practical support as well as education and research to find a cure,” he says. mate emergency and committed to become net carbon zero by 2050, so it’s fantastic to see more and more people making some trips by bike. “The electronic bike counters that have been installed around the city over the past 18 months show significant numbers of people are riding all year round, but for anyone thinking of giving it a go, summer is a great time to start.” September’s count data shows Thorndon Quay and Oriental Bay Parade are the busiest biking spots in the city. Some 24,129 bike trips (a weekday average of 1102) were recorded on Thorndon Quay during the month. In Oriental Bay, 18,963 (a weekday average of 723) were counted on the new bike path in September, with a further 7534 (a weekday average of 299) on the road. Cordon counts show cycling numbers have tripled since 2001.
