New site, new name By Megan Connolly

Life City Church will be saying goodbye to their home at 1 Parkway come August 16 and moving into town. The church will be relocating to 15b Queen Street and settling into the area that spans from Charlie’s Sushi through to the old Way of Life 24/7 Gym and

Fitness Centre. The church will also be doing a complete rebrand at the same time, evolving into their new name: Hills. Life City’s current building has been sold to a high profile manufacturing company which will be bringing new job opportunities to the community, according to Awhina. Continued on page 2.

Church changes name to ‘Hills’ Continued from page 1. After more than 20 years in its current location, Pastors Sene and Awhina Vailima are feeling excited about the next step in the church’s journey. “It’s a happy-sad feeling but we’re looking forward to recreating ourselves,” Awhina says. “And the concept for changing our name was simple. We are surrounded by hills.” The renovation of the new complex on Queens Street will begin on August 19 and phase one is expected to be completed before the end of the year, all

going to plan. Their new home next to the mall will be home to a 250300 person auditorium space, community spaces, a cafe, and mini food court, and a space for children. “It’s going to be awesome,” Awhina says. They will have free wifi available and open to the entire community, not just church members. “It’s going to be great to have a place that will be central, with spaces where people can come with a good vibe that is fresh

This project has been in the works for two to three years because it was important to Awhina and the church that the buyer was going to serve the community. “It was really important to ensure the buyer was going to bring something to our community,” Awhina says. To many, the location of the Life City Church has been a familiar landmark in the community but the change hopes to bring an additional community area “with a great cup of coffee” Awhina says.

Locals learn about healthy lunches By Megan Connolly

What should and should not go in a child’s lunchbox has always been a big question for many families. Last Thursday Hutt City Kindergartens ran a free workshop at the Wainuiomata Memorial Hall that talked healthy lunchboxes with local whanau. Heart Foundation spokespersons guided the thirty attendees through important components of a lunchbox, how to read food labels, budget-friendly ways to include healthier options with demonstrations towards the end. “You have the power over your children’s palate,” Heart Foundation spokesperson Fiona Roberts says. Fiona finished with a demonstration of making sushi, sandwiches and wraps. Wainuiomata Countdown donated the resources, food and prizes. “We’re very happy to have a local business supporting the workshop, Hutt City Kindergartens spokesperson, Melissa Zgomba says. “It’s also a great way for parents to get ideas from other

The needs of our community come first.” The benefit of the central location will not only be for the use of all locals, not just members, but also the proximity to their social services Tuatahi Centre. “We hope we can continue to give hope, healing and that we can encourage, empower and enhance the community,” Awhina says.

Wine club turns 40

inbrief news Youth Award nominations open

By Megan Connolly

The oldest wine club in Wellington, the Wainuiomata Wine Club, turned 40 in May which was celebrated with, you guessed it, wine. But the secret to its success isn’t just the enjoyment of wine and drinking, but the warm and welcoming people who attend, club member Meleanie Walker says. “People are very welcoming and knowledgeable.” The group meets every second Wednesday of the month at Casa De Wotton Country Gardens “You don’t have to be experienced or know a lot about wine to come along. You don’t have to love wine.” Meleanie says. The wine club has all types of members at all different ages with speakers coming from all over the globe, Meleanie says. Melanie joined the group three years ago as a way to meet people and it was “love at first sight”. “Because you have so many

passionate people you get so many stories and people are always open to sharing their knowledge with you. “It’s almost like a family,” Meleanie laughs. There is always a variety of guest speakers and theme nights, and due to its long-standing legacy, there are always vis-

itors from out of town popping into a tasting night. However, spending time with the other wine fanatics won’t break the bank as you might think. It is an affordable night out. Membership is only $15 a year and then you pay $12.50 per week which goes towards

venue hire, food and some wine. “If you’ve always wanted to know about wine, taste wine on a budget and meet new people while close to home, it’s perfect for you,” Meleanie says. For more information contact club president, Jason, on wineclub1973@outlook.com.

Get walking and talking By Megan Connolly

Although it may still be cold in the mornings, that doesn’t stop the Social Walk ing Group from going on a walk every Thursday morning, after meeting at the Community Hub Library at 9.30am The group has been meeting since April and, as their name suggests, it’s all about being social, meeting new people, while getting a bit of exercise. While the small group averages around six walkers each week, they don’t decide where they’re going beforehand, but it will always be an hour. The walking group is perfect for any age, fitness levels and type of person, as long as you’re happy for a walk,

library kaitiaki Amanda Dickson says. “We’re not power walking, it’s a stroll,” she says. Fiona McKinney and Wynne Veenstra have been going along since it began. They didn’t know each other before the group but both now enjoy catching up. “We all like to talk to each other and the other people in the community,” Fiona says. “If we’re curious about what’s going on, like with the new housing developments, we’ll just ask.” If you’re new to the area, the group says it’s a great way to see what is going on in your community as well as a way to meeting new people. “Some of us have been living

in Wainuiomata for 30 years and we’re always seeing new things,” Fiona says. Wynne finds the morning walk to be a great motivator and sets her up for the day.

“It gets you out and gets the blood flowing,” Wynne says. If you’d like to meet new people and go for a gentle walk, pop along to the social walking club.

Police training exercise yesterday Police held a training exercise in town yesterday which included an increasing presence in the area. The training exercise was held at the old Wood Hatton School, 56 Wood St, Wainuiomata. There was an increased Police presence in the area between 8am and 4pm which included many staff carrying firearms. Nearby residents may have heard loud bangs come from the venue but Police assure them there was no cause for concern as it was just a routine training exercise. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact the Wellington Police Communications Centre on 04 381 2000.

Enjoy free shows at 12.30pm and at 6pm in Wainuiomata Hall with a variety of different entertainment at each. “These are run by our community for our community,” Love Wainuiomata’s Esther King says. “These are about having a showcase in our town centre where everyone can participate. “It’s when people come together that community happens, and by coming together in Queen St we’re developing it as a vibrant, safe community-owned space. “We’re really excited to trial this event on Friday, and keen to grow more opportunities with the support of local groups, clubs, individuals and whanau,” Esther says. Friday night will celebrate our locals who provide these performances.

Art to empower the senses By Megan Connolly

Local resident and emerging artist Estelle Cainey will be opening a gallery in Homedale Village at the end of August for other local artists to showcase their work. The Inspire Gallery will be a place for the community, artists and everyone in-between as a place to exhibit work, run workshops and create an inspiring space, hence the name, Estelle says. “I wanted to know how I could serve the community and this is where I was drawn. “The idea behind it is empowering the senses.” As an emerging artist herself, Estelle hopes to support artists in the community and celebrate the diversity of local art.

“I see it as an oasis out of the hustle of the world where visitors can linger and enjoy the art.” Estelle works as a spiritual life coach and has for many years but she has only been painting for a short period of time. “I am co-creator with my art. It’s not me who dictates the outcome, it’s a partnership.” If she were to describe her artwork Estelle would say mainly abstract and intuitive. “I just let it unfold.” By giving the gallery back to the community, she hopes to strengthen the connections within the local art community. “I hope it can stir some feelings in people and offer experience.” If you would like to sponsor the gallery or help out in anyway, contact Estelle at wholenesswithestelle@yahoo.co.nz

readers have their say... Find out the WORD on the Street. Question: We asked the Harriers: ‘Do you have a method to stay focused while you’re running?’

Alan Carman “I have a special breathing pattern. I try to do a breath on odd numbers and when my feet land. It keeps me going.”

Ashton Tietjens “I block out everyone around, look straight ahead and focus to keep on running.”

Georgina Cox “I count up to four and just repeat. It’s a way to keep my mind off running.”

Hanna Hoffman “Our coach tells us to use words that motivate us. I use ‘my best’ and ‘my dust’.”

Laura Wood “The finish line keeps me motivated. I hate running but I love crossing that finish line.”

Lucy Houlihan “Usually, for the first part, I stay behind someone then I take off at the end. I have a song or a word to motivate me, like ‘fastest’.”

Community Champions support Women’s Refuge By Megan Connolly

Local Community Champions were out recently collecting for Women’s Refuge outside Clive’s Chemist. This was the first street collection for the Community Cham-

pions who formed in September last year. The local Champions work on raising awareness around family violence and providing visibility and a conversation around it. A spokesperson says that collecting for the Women’s Refuge helps

to raise the awareness around family violence which is part of their kaupapa. “We’d like to thank the community for donating to the cause,” a spokesperson says. “The Wainuiomata community is always so generous.

“There were even several young people giving what they could which was really heartwarming.” Although they cannot know how much money was raised in Wainui for the refuge, they are very grateful. Women’s Refuges around New

Zealand provide education programmes and support services, information and safe housing to women, young people and children experiencing abuse, and much more. Donations will be going straight to the cause.

Squash fun for all ladies By Megan Connolly

Fun and fitness is the motto for the women at the Wainuiomata Squash Club’s ladies’ night who have met every Wednesday night at 7pm for the past six weeks. The night is a combination of squash lessons, games and, of course, socialising. The idea came to club secretary Karen “Kazz” Galliers and hus-

band Darin “Radar”, club captain, one day as a way to encourage more people to the club, particularly women. “With women, any sport can be daunting but squash can be played by anyone, all sizes and shapes,” Kazz says. “Many of the women who come have never played a racquet sport or only ever driven past the club.” Since ladies night began six

weeks ago, Kazz has seen an increase in all of the women’s confidence and to the ladies’ surprise, a love for squash. “Someone will try it out then drag their friend along,” Kazz says. Kazz was brought up with four brothers playing rugby league, touch rugby and softball but Kazz and Radar’s passion for Squash has grown over the years and they have

now been playing for five years. “I thought I was fit then I got on the court. The intensity of a workout is what you put into it.” The club books out the court so the women who come along have complete usage of the club’s three squash courts as well as the club sauna. “You don’t realise it’s such a cheap sport.” Membership starts from $5 with

Wednesday nights being free of charge. “Women don’t have any time for themselves so coming down to the clubs is time away for them and the chance for them to learn a new skill.” “It’s such an awesome atmosphere and every lady encourages each other,” says Kazz. Email Kazz at kazz911@hotmail. co.nz for more information.

OUT& about Light up lanterns for Winter Fest PHOTOs: Jo Hawes By Megan Connolly

Lower Hutt public art team, Struan Ashby and Erica Duthie, were at the Wainuiomata Community Hub Library on Sunday making paper art lanterns. Youngsters embraced their creative sides while making stained glass-like inserts by puncturing patterns and cutting cellophane that will filter the light and make the artworks come to life. The lanterns are part of the magic of the Hutt Winter Festival celebration and will be installed in the Lower Hutt Events Centre on Saturday, August 17. There are several other free workshops taking place at the Wainuiomata Community Hub that celebrate the Winter Festival. There will be a Resene Live-Action Murals where you can paint a mural with local artists from Monday August 12 to Thursday 15, 3-5pm. If art isn’t your style, maybe music is. The How to Write an Album session will run from Friday, August 16 from 4pm to 7pm. Undercuts write an album and need your creative input. Kayla Wood also delivers the Wainui News!

Finding Balance For over 2500 years, acupuncture has been popular with all kinds of people looking to soothe a range of health conditions, from chronic pain to hormone imbalances and mental illness. Qualified acupuncturist Renée Oliver practises the ancient therapy to help people living in the modern age . Her clinic in Lower Hutt CBD is a general practise, but Renée has a particular interest in treating muscular-skeletal conditions (such as sciatica), gynaecology, anxiety, insomnia, and the withdrawal symptoms associated with drug addiction. Renée is also passionate about helping women in postnatal care. She aids new mums with breastfeeding, urinary issues, postnatal depression, and general postnatal recovery. Renée holds a bachelor’s degree in health science and acupuncture. She’s very active in her local community - you can

styling products instore now • Waxing available Tuesday/Saturday find her at pop-up National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocal clinic at the Petone community house or the Babies Arms drop-in centre located at the Petone Depot. One of the most common questions Renée is asked at her clinic is whether acupuncture

hurts. The answer, you may be relieved to know is no! An acupucture needle is roughly the width of four strands of hair; you’d need 40 of them to produce the same sting as a hypodermic needle. Renée is also qualified in the practises of auricular acupuncture (limited to the ear), cupping, and

moxibustion. What treatment you’ll need is dependent on your individual requirements and health goals; Renée will work alongside you to achieve these. For more information on Renée’s practise, visit her website. www.huttacu.com

Wainuiomata, the Valley with a whole lot of Heart “We reach out to you all in our Wainuiomata community to let you know that we still have a shortage of doctors” explains Practice Manager, Regan Smith. Regan says “The doctor shortage has a huge impact on our patients and staff creating difficulty for all concerned.” “But we do have great news to share. In September and October we have two new doctors joining our team long term. We also have another Practice Nurse starting at Whai Oranga in late July and final year dental students from ŌOtago University are coming back in September.” “However, we’re experiencing problems with patients who do not attend their appointments. Please, if you no longer need to visit us, just phone and let us know. “Every day we have patients who desperately want and need an appointment. If you don’t want yours, help us to help them. Your assistance in this would make for efficient

scheduling of our doctors time.” Our repeat prescriptions are now processed on a 48hour turnaround. We are encouraging patients to phone us a least one week before medications are due to run out, so we can have time to prepare those prescriptions” Regan explains. “Our patients can make appointments either by phoning us directly or alternatively by signing up for ‘ManageMyHealth’, it’s easy. Visit our receptionists to get started.” With ‘ManageMyHealth’ you can check your lab results and get your prescriptions. Soon patients will be able to fully book appointments online as well.” explains Regan. Regan says “From the heart to you all in our Wainuiomata community thank you for your patience. With co-operation between patients and practice staff difficulties can be managed until our new doctors arrive.

With improved privacy you can prevent occupants from being overlooked in rooms like bathrooms, without blocking out too much light or adding bulk like blinds can. with Jacob Page

Beauden and Brodie the big concerns Kick your goals, Beauden! I don’t care if Beauden Barrett sets up tries with his running game, in an arm wrestle, which so many key World Cup games are, his goal kicking is a liability. For the second time in 12 months, his lacklustre goal kicking cost the All Blacks a match as the Springboks scrambled a 16-16 draw in Wellington. Barrett missed two regulation

penalty kicks which came back to haunt the All Blacks in a game they did enough to win but ultimately didn’t deserve to come out on the right side of. I’m also bur ying the lead because if Brodie Retallick’s arm injury looked as bad as it appeared when he left the game after an hour, then I’m not sure if we can win the Webb Ellis Trophy for a third straight time anyway.

The All Blacks, the pinnacle of world rugby for a decade, have slowly been reeled in as other countries appear to have caught up. Losing Brodie would be an irreplaceable blow. The men in black looked lethargic the entire first half but were much improved in the second. The Boks won the physical exchanges in the first 40.

The Barrett and Richie Mo’unga experiment earned a lukewarm pass mark at best. The sad thing about Barrett’s kicking troubles they will force him to play fullback so Mo’unga kicks goals which forces the world’s best fullback, Ben Smith, on to the wing. Smith, along with the return of Dane Coles were real highlights. Aaron Smith also added some zip at scrumhalf when he came

on. Kieran Read, Sonny Bill Williams and Rieko Ioane were passengers most of the night. No Brodie, no World Cup but no goal kicking composure and we won’t be winning it either. For the first time in a long time Steve Ha nsen a nd co have tough decisions to make under the scrutiny of a restless and unforgiving New Zealand public eye.

Local harrier represents Wellington It’s only half way through the season and local runner Cameron Forsyth has been selected for his second harriers event representing Wellington. The very promising young runner finished second in the mens under 18 grade at the recent Wellington Cross Country Championships. This performance, along with his other outstanding performances this season have secured his position on the Wellington team to compete at the New Zealand Cross Country Championships this coming Sunday. Along with Cameron, 11 other Wainuiomata runners headed out to Grenada North last Saturday to compete in the Wellington Centre Cross-country Championships. After several days of appalling wet weather, the course was very wet and muddy underfoot making the challenging course even harder in the later races. The course included several short sharp climbs but

unfortunately missed out the hurdles this year due to the council requiring a change to the course because of the wet grounds. It is hard to know whether the local athletes ran faster than last year due to the course change, but everyone ran amazingly well, club spokesperson Nikki Braniff-Jones says. And of the 12 athletes representing Wainuiomata there were six in the top ten and two second placings with Cameron Forsyth, and Shelley Tietjens in the non-championship 5km race. The event is a selection race for the National Championships being held in Upper Hutt this coming Sunday, so all athletes would be looking for a good result in order to be chosen for the Wellington team. With this being the last local cross-country race for 2019 Wainuiomata Harriers now head into the road racing part of the season.

“Our first event is the club road championships followed by the Wellington Road Championships which we host on Waterworks Road in the water catchment area of the Wainui,” Nikki says. This event also brings out the best of Wellington runners, trying to gain selection for national road championships. Bingo! Ulalei sees fun and worthwhile donations By Toli Sagaga

Ulalei had a successful Bingo Night at the Wainuiomata Rugby League Rooms last Friday night. The club received generous support from many of the local businesses through table sponsor-

ship, gift baskets, vouchers, and delicious bakery food. It was an evening enjoyed by all who attended. Local community board member, Keri Brown, had a go at calling out the numbers, during the evening too. Ulalei continued their success

on the court the following day at Walter Nash Centre with all four(4) teams winning. Premier 1 Ulalei Pua delivered another masterclass, the recipients being St Orans Club. Pua outplayed

and outclassed St Orans with a massive 70-42 win. Pua remain at the top of the Premier 1 with 1 game left in the round, securing a place in the play-offs. Ulalei Aute welcomed back Valerie Taito and Rachel Savelio from their international duties
