Pataka Kai delivered even more during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 – up to 1,000 boxes a day.

Indeed it was the first Covid lockdown that resulted in Pataka Kai being launched.

“We got calls from families who were just desperate,” says Teresea Olsen, who is general manager of Kokiri Marae Hauora and Social Services.

Pataka Kai was set up to meet that need.

“We were delivering up to 1,000 food parcels a day right through the Wellington region … right up to Waikanae” Ms Olsen says.

“It certainly was very challenging.”

The demand to provide food parcels for needy people did not disappear with the lifting of the Covid-19 lockdown, however, and Pataka Kai is now permanently delivering people boxes of food.

The fact that Pataka Kai is a national leader was demonstrated with a national award.

Pataka Kai is a member of the Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective which was awarded Local Government New Zealand’s Kainga Ora Home and Communities Excellence Award for social well-being.

Kai Collective to deliver food during the 2020 lockdown, Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry told the Wainuiomata News.

“That [Wainuiomata] group has filled a genuine gap all across the city,” the Mayor said.

Pataka Kai was, in fact, the initiator in setting up what would become the Te Awa Kairangi Kai Collective, the largest kai collective in New Zealand.

During the 2020 lockdown, Pataka Kai’s co-ordinator at that time, Janis Awatere began the process by establishing a partnership with Epuni-based Common Unity.

During the 2021 lockdown, Pataka Kai, Common Unity, Hutt City Salvation Army, Lower Hutt Foodbank, Orongomai Marae, Stokes Valley Foodbank and Te Aroha Kai formed the Kai Collective.

"I want to congratulate and thank everyone who has been involved in this initiative so far.

At a time when so many of our whanau have been feeling the pinch in the back pocket, the Kai Collective has been able to ensure that there is food on the table for our families and kids," the Mayor says.

Pataka Kai also provides the coordination and council fundholding function of the Kai Collective.

As well as providing food parcels for needy people, Pataka Kai also grows food to include in the giveaways.

of land behind St Peter’s Church hall, and the council has agreed that Pataka Kai can use this as a garden.

As well as growing kai, one of the aims of the “urban farm” is to help teach people in the com-

munity how to grow food and also how to cook it.

St Peter’s Union Church has also contributed to the resounding success of Pataka Kai by providing their community hall to the group free of charge.

Grandparents’ day at school Grandparents of the students descended on St Claudine Thevenet School for a special event on 27 July.

Grandparents Day at the school received great support from the school community, support the school’s acting principal, Sandra Page, described as “wonderful”.

“The students were excited to spend time reflecting and acknowledging the special place their grandparents hold in their hearts

and whanau,” Ms Page says.

“We would like to thank all of the grandparents who attended and shared some time with their grandchild or grandchildren in their classroom.

“What a lovely celebration of Saints Ann and Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus.

Thank you also to our St Claudine team who worked to organise and prepare for this event.”

The Wainuiomata News has secured the services of highly experienced journalist Frank Neill.

Frank began working for the paper as a reporter and photographer on 25 July.

Starting at The Evening Post as a cadet reporter, most of Frank’s working life has been as a writer and editor.

He trained as a journalist at Wellington Polytechnic, before the journalism training was taken over by Massey University. As well as reporting for The Evening Post, he also worked as a reporter on another daily, The Marlborough Express.

Frank has edited five newspapers: The Wairoa Star (published three times a week), The Picton Paper and City Voice (published weekly), and The Petone Herald and The Northern Courier (published fortnightly).

He also edited a number of magazines, including the New Zealand Law Society’s journal, LawTalk, where he

worked for more than 10 years.

In one role, Frank wrote, designed and published a book which is, in fact, an unheralded success story of New Zealand publishing. Called New Directions – A Guide to Managing Redundancy, this book has sold more than 60,000 copies.

This happened while Frank was living in Wainuiomata and was working as the public relations manager for Workplace Support, New Zealand’s first employee assistance provider.

Frank moved to Wainuiomata in 1985 and spent the next 14 years as a resident in Norfolk Street.

During that time his children attended Arakura School. Frank was, in fact, one of the initial board of trustees members at Arakura School following the introduction of Tomorrow’s Schools.

He now lives in Otaki.

Healthy diet lowers odds of catching Covid

Eating a healthy diet reduces your risk of contracting Covid-19 or, if you do catch it, reduces the risk of severe illness a new study shows.

The healthy diet the research looked at was a diet high in fruit, vegetables and Omega 3 fats.

The researchers surveyed more than 590,000 people, none of whom were vaccinated.

They found that the quarter of people with the most plant-rich diet had a 9% lower risk of actually developing Covid-19 compared with the quarter of people with the least healthy diets.

FRIENDS WHO CARE INC

For the last day of Brownies for the term, Wainuiomata’s Kai Arahi Brownies did a community action project with a rubbish clean-up around the local streets.

The project goes towards their Gold Koru Badge.

They met at Parkway Park where they started picking up rubbish then made their way down Konini Street and Karamu Crescent.

They then went along the track at the end

of Rata Street following the stream until they got to Hugh Sinclair Park at The Strand.

They were pleased with the amount of rubbish they had collected on the way.

The leaders were very proud of the girls’ efforts and enthusiasm .

Brownies is for girls from aged from sevento-nine-and-a-half-years-old.

Clareburt can do it in Paris Kiwi swimmer Lewis Clareburt looks like the real deal.

The 23-year-old won the men’s 400m Individual Medley for New Zealand at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday morning (NZ time), heading off Australia’s Brendon Smith and Scotland’s Duncan Scott in a new Games record and personal best time of 4:08.70.

He then doubled his triumphant

tally, taking out the 200m butterfly final in a thrilling race where he came back to beat legendary South African swimmer Chad le Clos in a tight battle with England’s James Guy who took the bronze.

Swimming New Zealand may not admit it openly, but there’s been a lack of world class talent produced over the past 25 years.

The sport has desperately

needed a new standard bearer to take over from Danyon Loader who’s double gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 has stood out like a beacon for all these years.

Wellington’s Clareburt seems to have a strong chance at gold in Paris in 2024 and with it, a chance to be a Kiwi sporting great.

Of course, it’s not easy to produce world class athletes in a

truly global sport like swimming.

Almost every country can produce a top swimmer and they’re almost all certainly trying.

Clareburt is a rare talent and is still young enough to have greatness at his doorstep.

If seven-year-old me only knew the magnitude of what Loader achieved as I watched it, I would have appreciated it more.

Clareburt, has at times, had to

battle to train in his own lane, as he has to push past average swimmers during training to keep his dreams alive.

Hopefully, Swimming New Zealand’s jewel in the crown is given every opportunity to prevail in Paris because he has shown in Birmingham that he is not only world class but a genuine threat to be on the top of the podium.

Wildcats prevail with late winner Wainuiomata

The Wainuiomata Wildcats women's team saved the best for last on a productive football weekend despite the rain which hammered Wellington over the past week.

The Wildcats were transferred to the artificial turf of Petone to face Upper Hutt.

Monica Wiig opened the scoring for Wainuiomata but the visitors found their way back into the game as they equalised.

With the game looking like the points would be shared, Wainui found the winner through an unlikely source. Jonelle Smith popped up with a goal to start wild celebrations and secure a 2-1 win for the ladies.

The Wainuiomata Premier side had a weekend off due to the Chatham Cup quarter finals taking place and the Reserves also had a weekend off as half of the side came down with COVID. Returning to Taita Courts after a two-week school holiday break, the Wainuiomata Intermediate Rata netball team were excited to play against St Orans College 3. The lively Year7/8 team were initially nervous having been promoted after finishing top of their grade in Round 1. It didn't take long for the youngsters to find their groove taking a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Team Rata scored a further three goals in the second quarter and

restricted St Orans to a single goal to extend their lead to 10-4 at half time. With some fantastic defensive work and through court play, Team Rata maintained their lead to finish with a 16-9 victory.

Coached by Ulalei Netball Club members Memory Hopoi-Timo and Sina Tamaalii the young team were pleased with the win and are looking forward to the local derby clash against St Claudines Thevenet Kowhai this Saturday at 2:30pm.

Wainuiomata High School prevail over Upper Hutt College Wainuiomata High School dominated their game against Upper Hutt College from start to finish prevailing 21-8.

They came out firing with accurate shooting from Ane Peni, Integra Smith and Leah Dixon to take a 14-3 lead at half time.

The shooters received excellent ball from their feeders Deonte Williams and Ilai Vagana who

worked the ball into the circle with great aplomb.

Vagana was all class at centre and showed his array of skills, with accurate feeding to the shooters, his superb aerial skills to pick up numerous intercepts and his transition from defence to attack was outstanding.

The defensive unit of Piper Berry, Piper McMillan and Ma-

kayla Gore collected intercepts, deflections and forced UHC into making error after error. The defensive pressure restricted the opposition to just eight goals.

WHS adapted well to the wet and cold playing conditions, ensuring ball security and executing short sharp passes. WHS winning 21-8.
