Demolition time

By: Gerald Rillstone At last there is progress for the community with the demolition and rebuild of Wainuiomata High School.

The $24 million dollar project is expected to take two years with the new school providing space for 750 students, the old school buildings were designed for 1,000 students.

Two years of construction Continued from page 1 Students, dignitaries, teachers, politicians and contractors gathered to celebrate the start of the rebuild with Minister of Education Chris Hipkins and Wainuiomata High School Principal Janette Melrose taking to the old buildings with sledge hammers.

Janette says it has been a long slow journey to get to the rebuild.

Originally Parkway College the school was built in 1972 and was merged with Wainuiomata College in 2002.

In 2007 the Ministry of Education began investigation into replacing the buildings and plans were made but the Christchurch

and Kaikoura earthquakes occurred so the plan to rebuild Wainuiomata High School was pushed back.

With a pledge from Prime Minister Jacinda Adern in 2018 that if elected she would see to it that $24 million was provided for the rebuild she has made good on that promise.

Janette says over the past three years the school has focused on mordernising the way they deliver their student centered, integrated, community connected, flexible curriculum.

“We have moved away from traditional subjects and moved towards student selected courses,”

she says.

They have one day a week where students focus on a project that they are interested in and passionate about connected to the community.

“We are firm believers that if students are interested in what they are learning, and it is relevant and meaningful to them as learners then they are more likely to be engaged and successful.”

Janette says a debt of gratitude goes to the team from Stephenson and Turner for listening to the staff, students, community and Board for designing buildings unique and relevant to the students and the community.

Speaker of the House list MP Trevor Mallard, who did the original review of the site and buildings, says he does regret deciding to rebuild on the current site.

“There was a decision I now regret to site the school on this site, we knew there were major engineering problems on the other site and it would require a total demolition because some of the buildings had concrete cancer.”

“With retrospect it probably would have the students at the current site and demolish the old college and rebuild there but I am pleased we have come to a really good resolution,” he says.

By Gerald Rillstone A new year sees a new student lead leadership team of Tamzin Toa, Ocean Steer and Sonia Gounder.

Announced at the end of 2020 Tamzin says it was not unexpected that she would be a head student in 2021 but it was still “a nice surprise.”

They are all keen to provide the best in role models they can.

“Starting this week we will introduce our new year nines making sure that they feel welcome and that they are alright with high school and from there what ever is thrown our way,” Tamzin says.

Ocean says he is looking forward to being a role model and someone to look up to.

“I remember being a year nine and having loads of people to deal with and when I was year nine it was a good time I really enjoyed it, you definitely feel a lot more comfortable in school,” he says.

Tamzin says being the last year in school she will miss it when the end of 2021 comes and wants to make the most of the year especially after COVID interruptions last year.

“It took away so much time physically in school so this year we have to make so much of our opportunities,” she says.

Sonia says she is also looking forward to the coming year and has a fair idea of what she would like to do after her final year.

“I want to go to Uni first and will see what happens from there,” she says.

inbrief news Greater Wellington moves on climate change Greater Wellington strongly supports the Government’s increased focus and faster pace on climate change, and welcomes its pledge of $50 million towards decarbonisation of public transport.

“It feels like we’re really beginning to up the ante on our climate response, with key decisions that show a clear direction on achieving significant reductions in emissions from the national transport fleet and more to come,” says Greater Wellington councillor and chair of its transport committee, Cr Roger Blakeley.

For Wellington, emissions are a key issue because while total emissions over the past two decades fell by around 5 per cent, our transport emissions grew by 14 per cent.

The Government’s timeline for bus decarbonisation follows Greater Wellington’s work under its comprehensive climate change strategy, which was developed last year following its declaration of a climate emergency.

The strategy set a target with the objective of taking the council’s operation to carbon positivity by 2035, based on two ten-point action plans that supplement its earlier 2015 Climate Change Strategy.

What is a cold sore?

A cold sore is a blister on your lip caused by a virus. Cold sores usually begin with a tingling feeling on the lip, progress to a blister, then to a sore that slowly heals. They normally last for 7–10 days. Cold sores are contagious, and spread through personal contact.

Cold sores are common and can recur once you’ve been infected.

Triggers are a low immune system such as when you have a cold or flu, when you’re stressed or tired, or an irritant like too much sun or wind.

Cold sores usually heal up on their own. We stock creams, natural remedies, and supplements that can help to prevent and heal cold sores. However, see your doctor if cold sores recur often, if they don’t heal, if symptoms are serious, or if your eyes become irritated.

Advise children with cold sores to wash their hands every time they touch their lip so they don’t spread the infection, and ask them not to pick at the sore.

To prevent cold sores, you can avoid skin-to-skin contact particularly when a blister or crust is present. Using sunblock or lip balm on your face and lips can protect against triggers such as sunburn or windburn.

Greater Wellington is inviting the community to wander up to the iconic Baring Head lighthouse, learn about its history, and take in the views as part of Baring Head Taiao Open Day this Saturday.

After a walk, bike or shuttle ride to the top, visitors will enjoy stunning views of rough and rugged coastlines, lush native forests, and the Wellington harbour.

Greater Wellington Councillor Prue Lamason is looking forward to attending the Open Day, which is a jewel in the crown of Greater Wellington’s summer events calendar.

“This event is always a big hit with the community, and it’s easy to see

why. Baring Head is a location that’s absolutely brimming with beauty and history – it’s home to the only lighthouse compound in New Zealand that has retained its original condition over the years, so it’s full of untold history,” she says.

To help bring this history to life, the Friends of Baring Head will be on hand to share stories about the reserve’s unique past, and the present efforts to preserve and restore this site.

NIWA’s clean air station is another piece of living history to be found at Baring Head – it’s been there since 1972, making it the longest running continuous CO2 measurement in the Southern Hemisphere.

People are encouraged to register their interest to attend Baring Head Taiao Open Day on Facebook.

The Open Day is part of Greater Wellington’s summer programme which features 24 events across the region, including festivals, guided forest walks, snorkelling, mountain biking, movies at the park and more.

“There’s a lot of talk about making the most out of our own backyards since we can’t presently travel overseas, but with so many great events on, staying local doesn’t feel like a compromise,” says Cr Lamason.

Wet or fine, on Sunday 7th March 2021 they are having our 2nd Memorial Bowls Family Day at Waiuiomata Bowling Club, 1 Moohan Street.

The fundraising event is open to everyone including non-bowlers

and social members and they plan to make the 2nd event as successful as the first.

All funds raised will be going directly to Wainuiomata Lions Non-Profit Club, specifically to provide petrol to volunteer drivers who provide transport for Wainuiomata cancer patients to and from Wellington hospital.

inbrief news Warning over bikes sold online Christchurch Police are asking people to be vigilant when looking to buy bicycles online, after a number of bike thefts in the area over the past few weeks.

Two people responsible for a large number of the thefts have been arrested, and other thefts are being actively investigated.

The majority of these stolen bikes are being sold via Facebook Marketplace, and Police would remind people to take care when purchasing online.

We’d recommend you purchase from authentic sellers and genuine retailers, and websites based in New Zealand.

If you’re purchasing from an individual, we suggest you request proof of ownership, or perhaps some form of ID. If the seller is not able to or refuses to provide these, it’s possible the item may be stolen.

Drivers be vigilant New Zealand Police would like to remind motorists to keep an eye out for our tamariki as schools begin to reopen this week.

Drivers need to be extra vigilant around schools, and keep in mind that children are highly unpredictable.

The speed limit is 20km/h when passing school buses dropping off or picking up children.

If you are walking your children to school, show them the safest place to cross roads, reminding them to look left and right and look out for cars.

New Nui coffee business Starting a new business after a tough year isn’t for the faint hearted but Wainuiomata tattooist Clint Quentric has.

It is in Homedale and there isn’t a lot of foot traffic but there also isn’t any other coffee suppliers either.

“It’s a service to the community,” he says.

Wainui born and bred Clint’s grandfather was George Barry-

more who organised the memorial gardens.

“It is going to be good in the winter time because people love their hot drinks in the winter,” Clint says.

Clint says he had been thinking of putting in the whole in the wall coffee business for sometime and a machine came up at the right price and he got stuck in dividing off a part of his Tattoo shop to

make room for it and he runs the two businesses at separate times of the day.

Clint says his sister trained him up on the machine and he has the full range of coffee’s and hot chocolate available.

“There is coffee at the BP and I figure once people know I am here they will fill with petrol once a week and the rest of the week they will stop off here for

coffees in the morning because there are no queues,” Clint says.

“I open at 6:30 in the morning and close at 1pm so if another business wants to open up, like a cafe, they can cover the afternoons and evenings.”

Clint has been running his tattoo studio for the last two years and hopes to add a tattoo removal service to the business in the future.

• ½ cup flour (gluten free, optional) • 1 tsp baking powder (gluten free, optional) • ½ tsp salt • 2 eggs, beaten • 410g can Wattie’s Cream Style Corn • 410g can Wattie’s Whole Kernel Corn, drained

1. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl.

2. Add the beaten eggs and Wattie’s Cream Style Corn and mix well. Fold in the drained Wattie’s Whole Kernel Corn.

3. Heat 1–2 tablespoons of oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Place spoonfuls of the corn fritter mixture into the pan. Cook for 2–3 minutes or until bubbles appear on the surface of the batter. Turn and cook the other side for a further 2–3 minutes or until the fritters are golden and cooked through. It may be necessary to add extra oil to the pan during cooking.

Wallys Neem Products: By Wally Richards With lockdowns all over the world we have finally received the very sought-after Neem Oil, Neem Granules and Neem Powder, not only back in NZ but after delays in the ports back in our warehouse and started distributing to all the gardeners and garden shops that have also been waiting for the return.

Like many importers, we have all been in the same boat (figuratively speaking) with many months of costly delays on receiving orders.

Good news it is back happening and the Wallys Neem Granules are now a more uniform size and far better and easier to use and work with.

The writer has a very long history of association with Neem products.

I was the first writer to publish the benefits of Neem on how it is not a poison but controls insect pests through its anti-feeding aspect and a deterrent from its smell, which is to confuse insect pests from finding their host plants.

At the same time not hurting beneficial predictor insects that eat the pest insects.

It was about 20 years ago I introduced the first readily available Neem Oil with the

Trade Name Suntec along with Neem granules and pellets.

As Neem Oil became popular with gardeners and retailers, other players in the market with their chemical controls for insect pests tried to; (with what is now known as ‘Fake News’) made out that the oil was dangerous to the point of saying it can cause cancer and birth defects.

The main company making these claims I hear is soon to release their own brand of Neem Oil? Maybe a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ I found also the following on the Internet: The natural insecticides, fungicides and bio-pesticides made out of Neem have many advantages.

Research studies indicate that they are not harmful to humans or animals. The pests will not develop resistance over generations while the beneficial insects like butterflies, ladybugs, etc are spared.

The soil is enriched, and Neem extracts leave no residue in the environment.

Insecticide - Neem extracts have been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use on food crops.

It is non-toxic to birds, animals, beneficial insects or man and protects crops from over 200 of the most costly pests. As a fungicide, Neem oil is mainly used as a preventative and when disease is just starting to show.

It coats the leaf surface which in turn prevents the germination of the fungal spores. Neem oil is effective against rots, mildews, rusts, scab, leaf spot and blights.

Neem Cake, the by-product obtained in the process of cold pressing of Neem fruits and kernels is used as organic manure. It has adequate quantity of NPK in organic form for plant growth.

Neem cake typically contains about 6% neem oil and min. 4% nitrogen, 0.5 % phosphorus and 0.5% potassium.

Being totally botanical product it contains 100% natural NPK content and other essential micro nutrients. It is rich in both sulphur compounds and bitter limonoids.

According to research calculations, Neem cake seems to make soil more fertile due to an ingredient that blocks soil bacteria from converting nitrogenous compounds into

nitrogen gas.

It is a nitrification inhibitor and prolongs the availability of nitrogen to both short duration and long duration crops. It also acts as a natural fertilizer with pesticidal properties.

Neem cake organic manure protects plant roots from nematodes, soil grubs and white ants probably due to its content of the residual limonoids. Neem cake is widely used in India to fertilize paddy, cotton and sugarcane.

It is harmless to earthworms - in fact earthworm populations are known to proliferate in plots treated with Neem cake. End. All I can think of is that some chemical insecticide distributors to the home garden market would prefer gardeners to buy their products rather than use a effective natural alternative.

I believe that there is sufficient documented evidence to say that Neem products are safe to use and are a great natural asset for the home gardener to combat a wide range of insect pests and plant diseases without harming themselves or the environment.

RTS makes bold, smart move As a Crusaders fan, could Roger Tuivasa-Sheck come to the mainland, please?

The 27-year-old has announced one of the worst kept secrets in New Zealand sport - that he would like to be an All Black and will depart the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2021 season.

It’s a massive blow for the Warriors who not only lose their captain but also their marquee and best player.

The electric fullback owes the

Warriors nothing.

While the club has struggled to turn potential into meaningful campaigns, the fullback has been a constant shining light.

He’s a threat on attack and a respected last line of defence.

To the club’s credit, the Warriors have not stood in his way.

Will he be an All Black and where will he play will be the biggest question marks going forward.

Certainly, on the few times I

watched him play first XV rugby he was a prodigious talent. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate that at the highest level after 10 years of rugby league.

His signing is a boost to rugby in New Zealand.

Tuivasa-Sheck is in the prime of his sporting life and could be an x-factor for the All Blacks if he can make the transition. There is early talk of him shifting to centre, potentially for the Blues initially in

Super Rugby.

It would certainly help add depth to a spot where New Zealand rugby does not have a lot of depth looking towards the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It’s an exciting win-win scenario for both the player and the game, it’s another big hit for rugby league in this country.

The Warriors can only blame their inept performances over many years.

At times at the Warriors, their

captain has been the best player in the NRL. However, when a club is going nowhere year after year, I’m sure it is disheartening for a relented player to stand at the back and watch the carnage.

I’d happily bet that Tuivasa-Sheck will be a star in rugby and likely will never return to the NRL. He could be a World Cup wild card for the men in black in a couple of years time.

Wainuiomata Bowls brightened Wainuiomata bowling club began the season with a new uniform and a new name … Wainui Wolves.

The season was further brightened by three ladies returning to the club and four new ladies joining.

The club entered six teams into the interclub competition and ended the season with 1st in the 8’s division 1.

They were 2nd in the 8’s division 2 and 2nd in the mixed quads.

Unfortunately, the Men’s top team failed to fire and was relegated to 3rd division in the men’s 7s.

Members says having ladies back at the club bought a breath of fresh air, with the junior ladies showing a great deal of promise and the club would love more ladies to join as this would allow them to play in a lady’s grade, rather than the mixed quads.

Saturday’s Wainuiomata Bowling Club’s Men’s Triples qualifying rounds saw only three teams from eight entered making it through to qualifying. The semi-final and final played on Sunday with the winning team winning two years in a row.

They were Skip, Danny Garrick, Two, Wayne Ramanui and Lead, Stephen Young.

Wainuiomata bowling has mixed results for the Interclub season.

Wednesday night is the clubs Community Bowls and all are welcome 6.00pm start come down for a look .

With this being a long weekend there is no play .
