Onslow College students are challenging their peers to think about the long-term impact their food choices can have on the environment.

The school’s envirogroup, which comprises students across all age-groups, ran a vegetarian food fair late last week in an effort to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of meat consumption.

Students take lead in meat-free movement Year 11 student Divya Mylavarpu says the event received an overwhelming perspective.

“We had a wide variety of food like chickpea curry, pancakes, sushi and dumplings,” she says.

“We collectively decided in wanting to do this project that we wanted to highlight the impact of meat production on the climate and we hoped by doing this that it would encourage people to get more vegetarian dishes,” she says.

“We gave out pamphlets with recipes in them and it was good to know we got a positive response from students, some who hadn’t had a lot of vegetarian food before.

“Another motivator for doing this was raising awareness around animal cruelty.”

The event was also supported by the school’s staff band.

Funds raised from the event would go to several charities while the group kept a portion of it to re-invest in environmental projects at the school like their learning garden where they grow vegetables.

The group meets every Tuesday to discuss key topics.

“We’re also planting trees in an area close to the school to entice more native birds to come to the area.

“We always have a few projects on the go throughout the year.

“We learn a lot from each project and even for those of us within the envirogroup, this has

encouraged us to have a vegetarian meal more regularly than we would have before.

“We hope by getting the word out that we can challenge other schools to get involved in this

space.

Divya says the group remain committed to finding causes which they are passionate about and eager to learn more about throughout the year.

Ngaio Crofton Downs - Going Carbon Neutral Are you feeling overwhelmed by the growing pace and challenge of climate change?

“You’re not alone if you’re feeling some anxiety,’’ says Sue Brown, Minister at Ngaio Union Church.

“I’ve talked with a lot of people – of all ages – who’re worried, and feel they want to make a difference, but don’t know where to start.”

So now a group drawn from the Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association and Ngaio Union Church are leading a mission to have their suburbs head towards becoming carbon neutral, starting with small steps that are within everyone’s reach.

“We’re calling it Ngaio Crofton Downs Going Carbon Neutral,” says Sue. The programme will include a wide range of community projects to reduce the suburbs’ carbon footprint, and residents will be encouraged to measure their

own carbon footprint to measure progress.

“The first project off the block will be a scheme to recycle those small items that might be in the bottom of your kitchen or bathroom drawer and that you just don’t know how to recycle,’’ says Ian Turk, Chair of the Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association.

Beginning on Saturday, the NCD Going Carbon Neutral is setting up a monthly drop-in collection station for these smaller items - 10am to 12 noon on the first Saturday of each month, at Ngaio Union Church (cnr Kenya Street and Crofton Road).

“Bring along your bottle tops, pens and other plastic stationery, toothbrushes, odds and ends of wool, razors and curtains and we’ll work with the Sustainability Trust to make sure they get to the right place to be reused or recycled.” says Yan Han, who is co-ordinating the drop-ins.

Sam takes step into New Zealand music industry Sam Howard, fourth year music student at Whitireia, did not have any formal music training when he chose to pursue his dream career in music.

But he knew that having a formal qualification would be an important part of making his journey a success.

As a first step to following his dream, Sam auditioned to study music at Whitireia in 2018, after finishing year 13 at Whanganui High School.

Sam is now studying at Level 6 and is also a working musician and manager for the band The Gallery. Over summer he successfully organised a series of concerts for the band in the South Island, and they are expecting to sell out their upcoming show in Wellington.

Whitireia stood out to Sam because of their creative, hands-on nature and their acceptance of musicians of all abilities.

“When I moved to Wellington from Whanganui after college, I just started writing music with my flatmates and considering how I could turn it into a career.”

“As a rapper I didn’t have any formal training, and I didn’t have a great understanding of musical theory, but the tutors saw that I would work hard to learn it on the course and that was one of the big things they look for.”

“When students audition we tell them not to be scared of what you don’t know, focus on what you do know and we can work on the rest,” Whitireia music tutor Gloria Hildred says.

“I auditioned with the idea that I would complete whatever course I got into,” says Sam. “I explained I didn’t really know any theory and they were fine with that because they saw I was willing to learn.

“My parents had always pushed me towards a career in sport. I played rep level basketball, cricket, badminton and football growing up - and loved it - but in the back of my mind I always wanted to pursue a career as a rapper or performer.

“It has been really awesome to be able to work as a musician while I am studying because the two obviously complement each other and I don’t have to worry about getting a part-time job to help pay the rent while I study. I am the vocalist for The Gallery but I also do a lot of

the management which is timeconsuming, but really cool to be able to put into action the things that we have learnt in class.”

While working and studying is a lot to take on, the draw of finishing his qualification and the supportive environment of Whitireia has been too much for Sam to leave.

“There have been times when I

have thought that studying full-time plus being in the band is too much but I am really keen to complete my studies before jumping completely into the music industry,” says Sam. “It is also such a supportive, whanau environment here. We all help each other out with assignments and collaborate on our music and that is pretty hard to leave.”

Tawa Lions Saturday Market on the move The Tawa Lions Saturday market has moved to a new site within the Outlet City carpark.

The new site is adjacent to the Porirua Stream just North of the vehicle access bridge across the stream.

The Saturday market has now been operating on the Outlet City property for the past 15 years and Tawa Lions are most grateful to Outlet City management for allowing this. All funds raised from the market are directed back into the community for various projects such as supporting local youth and the Tawa Lions annual Christmas parade.

Wrights Hill Rejuvenation Project takes shape Wrights Hill in Karori is one of Wellington’s iconic peaks, at a height of 332m offering 360 degree views that span the harbour and reach Farewell Spit on a clear day.

Chair of Karori Residents’ Association, Andrea Skews, is a regular visitor to its tracks and has recently started the Wrights Hill Rejuvenation Project in association with Karori Rotary Club, Wellington City Council and Ara Poutama Department of Corrections.

“Wrights Hill is an amazing area that has been suffering from neglect, despite how many locals use the walking tracks and offlead dog area. We need to ensure these beautiful areas are looked after and available to access for everyone

to enjoy.” says Ms Skews.

Over the past month the Department of Corrections community work groups have undertaken clearing, pruning and removing of the overgrown bush covering the main paths to the summit of the hill.

Wellington City Councillor Simon Woolf says “The leadership shown by The Karori Residents Association in tidying up Wrights Hill has been fantastic. The initiative has seen gorse, other plant pests and rubbish removed. Native plants and trees have received some well needed love and attention, and a number of the views have been renewed. The start made by all involved has made the area more attractive and accessible. The work

has been impressive. I am very grateful, and proud of the Association and others in our community for what they have achieved.”

Dist r ict Ma nager of Wellington Community Corrections, Scott Palmer said “We are very proud to be associated with such a worthwhile project. This project provides those on community work with a great way to give back to their local community.”

Currently the project is working to maintain and free up existing native plants and tree space, but they are planning for the planting of endemic species in phase 2 of the project.

There are also plans to install picnic tables at the summit for the community to enjoy.

To help keep kids warm and well this winter, Wellington Hospitals Foundation has launched its annual Jammies in June Appeal.

Respiratory conditions are a leading cause of acute admissions to hospital for children and Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital sees a significant increase in the number of children who are admitted over the winter months - many of them arriving without a pair of pyjamas.

For children who need hospitalisation, the most common respiratory conditions are also associated with socioeconomic deprivation, and sadly, the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital’s community nursing teams frequently visit children in homes that are crowded, cold and damp.

This leaves young children even more vulnerable to complications from asthma (with one in seven kiwi kids diagnosed as asthmatic), bronchitis and other nasty respiratory infections.

Civil Defence Emergency Management Staff Practice Tsunami Scenario

Wellingtonians who would help in the case of a civil emergency have taken part in Exercise Parawhenua – a scenario which focused on a tsunami that would affect the whole of New Zealand’s Coastline.

Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC), involving over 180 council staff and more than 30 partner agency staff.

A range of partner agencies play a key role in a scenario like this, including Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, Wellington Free Ambulance, NZ Defence Force, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment, Waka Kotahi, District Health Boards and Regional Public Health.

“The focus of the exercise was

to provide timely and accurate information to the public to keep people informed of the risks of tsunami and the actions they can take to look after themselves and others, to coordinate the evacuation of the region’s Red and Orange Zones, and to look after people impacted or displaced by tsunami waves.

“Each exercise was evaluated, and while there are always areas to improve on going forward, our dedicated teams did a great job responding to this scenario under realistic time pressures,”

Mark says.

A key finding from these exercises, as was highlighted during the earthquake and tsunami events of March 5, is the importance of people knowing their tsunami zones, and where to go for safety, Mark explains.

Wellington Council staff and agency representatives from across the Wellington region donned their emergency management vests late last week and delved into Exercise Parawhenua – a scenario which focused on a tsunami that would affect the whole of New Zealand’s Coastline.

The exercise scenario focussed on a 9.1 magnitude earthquake occurring off the coast of Chile which generated a tsunami that would take 12-14 hours to reach the Wellington region. The tsunami waves in this scenario would affect the region’s Red and Orange Tsunami Evacuation Zones.

Wellington Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Group Controller Mark Duncan says these exercises provide an opportunity for Civil Defence to improve the way they respond to major emergencies.

“We run regular exercises to strengthen relationships with partner agencies and organisations and to test our emergency response plans, process and procedures.

“Our ultimate goal is to minimise the negative impacts that major disasters can have on our communities,” Mark says.

To coordinate the response, the region practised activating its six council Emergency Operations Centres (EOC) and the regional

Revitalise Johnsonville? YIP! Hey Everyone! This week we had another local meeting around the revitalisation of the Johnsonville area, and as more and more locally owned businesses are feeling the pinch, we have found ourselves once again looking at better ways to improve ourselves.

Yes! The age-old wish that the new mall will come and save us. I personally believe that our community can be amazing despite of the mall, we are a wonderful community full of locally owned small businesses, dedicated volunteers, large range of community groups, clubs, and amazing schools. We should focus on our own areas and encourage positivity and growth, so that collectively our community will be so vibrant that businesses (like the Mall) will want to invest and be part of this community!

Local businesses at the meeting have indicated a drop in customer numbers and revenue is falling drastically close to the lease amounts. We are in danger of being stuck in a vicious cycle, as less people shop local, there will be less shops, resulting in even less people coming. Businesses only leave an area if there are no customers / market to support it. Yes! In the modern age of internet, you can buy something cheaper online. But if you are able to support a local business over some large corporation or online business, please do! When you shop local, you aren’t funding some wealthy company owner’s luxury car or superyacht, you are helping a local family create local jobs and energy in our community.

We live locally and are very grateful to have the support of our community, that believe in our community focused business ethos and we see our community as collective shareholders of our business – and with that responsibility we must always look at ways

to help our community grow. Last week we officially opened our FREE Collective Community Hub, and we are now looking at our next Collective Community project! We would love to hear your ideas of how we can encourage new businesses in Johnsonville, create more jobs for locals, encourage people to come to the centre and grow our community!

Forget the Mall! If it comes, then ok. If you look at what Queensgate did to the little shops in Lower Hutt, I’m not sure we want the mall right now. Let’s get Johnsonville moving regardless of what the mall does, we got to embrace our own destinies and not wait for something like that mall to save us.

In our local focus group we are not aiming to have a magic bullet solution, but if we all just make the effort to make things 1% better every day, we can make positive progress.

Bill Day delights Khandallah Rebus At the Rebus Club of Khandallah’s May meeting the speaker was Bill Day, MNZM, JP - Chair Wellington Hospitals Foundation.

Bill spoke about the progress being made for the new Regional Children’s Hospital, illustrated by a slide presentation.

In our region there are over 87,000 child health visits and over 7,500 children are admitted to the children’s hospital every year.

Three years ago, following an initial approach by the Wellington Hospitals Foundation, Wellingtonian Mark Dunajtschik gifted $50 million to build and donate a new world-class children’s hospital for our region. This project is unique in that Mark and the CCDHB have engaged with clinical teams to work with the architects from day one, which allowed them to design medical, clinical, administrative, monitoring and whanau spaces to meet their needs as well as those of children and their families.

General Practitioner Dr Teresa Matuszewska and Nurse Practitioner Nasim Bi have recently joined Enliven in two new roles to provide consistency of medical services in its Wellington homes.

In April Dr Teresa and Nasim began providing medical services to Woburn Home in Lower Hutt; Longview Home in Tawa; Huntleigh Home in Karori and Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville.

“This GP/Nurse Practitioner partnership is an innovative programme introduced to help support our homes to provide consistent and holistic care to our residents,” says Enliven business operations manager Suzanne Simpson.

Dr Teresa and Nasim are no strangers to some of the Enliven Wellington homes.

Dr Teresa has worked as a GP in some of the homes for about 11 years.

Nasim joined Enliven in 2011 as a nurse at Cashmere Heights Home. While she was completing her Nurse Practitioner training she worked across the Wellington Enliven homes for more than two years.

“Both Dr Teresa and Nasim come with a wealth of experience that will bring expert clinical management and support for the residents,” Suzanne says.

Dr Teresa says under the new role her regular visits to the residents will continue, but she and Nasim will now be available out of hours if needed.

“We are on call to them 24/7.”

Nasim explains that this is not always an option when a home is dealing with a GP or a Nurse Practitioner from an external practice.

“When you have to contact a GP, you still have to go through the medical centre,” she says. “With these roles if

there is an emergency on the weekend we can go into the homes if needed.”

Bringing the two roles under Enliven also means more consistent care. Nasim says some of the homes would previously have to deal with many different GPs coming in for visits over short periods of time.

Nasim says while these roles are still new, they are working to educate residents and their families about the options available to them with their choice of care.

Over time, she says she is looking forward to building a strong rapport with those they are caring for and supporting the Enliven staff at the different homes. PBA

GARDENING THIS WEEK Elling set to hit First winter month: By Wally Richards Circa Theatre

Many home gardeners look forward to June, knowing the shortest day and the longest night will come and go and the garden will be heading into spring.

It’s a bit of an anomaly when you think about it. June is the first month of winter yet it is the month that logically should be in the middle of winter having the shortest day.

Wise gardeners will get as much done as possible while the weather permits. Digging, for instance.

All vacant land should be turned over and left rough for frosts.

Liming, for instance. Lime is absorbed best during cold weather.

Seed sowing applies particularly to gardeners who have a glasshouse, or even a glassed-in verandah or a conservatory.

One of the best aids available is the horticultural heating pad, thermostatically controlled to about 20C. Sowing seeds in shallow trays on one of these will guarantee germination, Even some species which normally will not germinate until the soil heats up in spring, like tomatoes.

Tender species like tomatoes will still need to be kept on the heating pad in case of June frosts, but may need to be lifted just above the pad with small, about 1cm to 2cm, wooden spacers in July and August, to prevent overheating at midday.

Rachel Price chases netball dream

New Zealand Secondary School squad netballer Rachel Price is relishing playing school netball this year.

The year 13 defender has made the move from St Catherine’s College in Kilbirnie to Samuel Marsden Collegiate in Karori for her final year of school and has already come close to tasting success on court with her new school.

“We had our one-day tournament last week at ASB Centre and St Mary’s beat us by one goal in the final,” she said. “We made that game hard for ourselves, but pulled it back at the end of the second half but it wasn’t quite enough.”

The one-day CSW Premier Paul Cameron Cup tournament saw St Mary’s beat Marsden 15-14 in the final. Marsden also had wins over Whitby Collegiate (35-2), Aotea College (21-12), Heretaunga College (22-6), Taita College (313), Wellington Girls’ (13-12) and Queen Margaret College (18-10 – semi-final).

The school teams are gearing up to play the annual College Sport Wellington Regional competition from June to August.

St Mary’s are the five-time Division 1 champions and the team to beat for Marsden and all the other schools in the region.

Rachel is one of three year 13s in her school’s Senior A team.

The other players being this year’s captain Araraina Takuira-Mita and Keira Banks.

The move to Marsden from St Catherine’s came about in large part because her former school has had no Senior A side for three years, as she explained: “When I started at St Cath’s the netball was really strong. The following year when I was year 10 it was mostly year 13s and then they all left.

“I came back to play in year 11, but there weren’t enough others that wanted to and we didn’t have a Senior A team.”

So she went and played club netball for Victoria University for the next two years.

“But I was kind of missing the opportunity with playing with girls my age and in school tournaments such as Lower North Islands and all of that.”

Marsden are also currently playing in the Netball Wellington club competition on Saturdays, in Premier 2. Queen Margaret College and Wellington East Girls’ College are the other two school teams in their grade. St Mary’s are in Premier 1.

As well as school netball, there is a busy age-grade representative season to look forward to in 2021, first for the Wellington U18s.

“We had trials a month or so ago and we have got our first tournament coming up on Queen’s Birthday Weekend.”

Samuel Marsden Collegiate netballer Rachel Price continues to make the most of her national opportunities.

This is all working towards the National U18 tournament, which has replaced the U19 tournament, and is in Rotorua later in the winter.

Rachel is joined by Marsden teammate Araraina Takuira-Mita in the Wellington U18 team.

The NZSS School squad was selected from a couple of camps earlier this year.

The players are on a fitness programme and their form is being watched by zone selectors providing feedback to the national coaches.

A final team of 12-14 players will be named in the final NZSS team

in August. The schedule for this team is yet to be confirmed.

The other players in the 19-player squad are Torren Isaako (Aotea College), Lili Clarke (Wellington Girls’ College) and Temalesi Rayasi (St Mary’s College).

Another carrot for the Wellington players in the leading school teams is playing in the NZSS Championships in Porirua at the end of this year. To qualify for the school nationals, schools have to finish inside the top five at the Lower North Island Championships in Hawke’s Bay at the end of August.

Rachel started playing netball in

year 4 “as young as I could.”

She started off as a shooter, then took two years off netball in her intermediate school years to play rugby, before resuming netball and switching positions.

“My auntie was the coach, and they were short on defenders, so she put me there and I have played it ever since.”

As well as rugby, she has played volleyball as well. These days though her sole focus is netball, which is keeping her busy either playing or training six days a week.

Four sporting icons to be inducted as Sport Legends of Wellington Tana Umanga, Lynnette Brooky, Duane Kale and Olivia Baker will be inducted as the Gibson Sheat Sport Legends of Wellington on Wednesday 23 June at The Dominion Post Sport and Recreation Awards.

Each year since 2003, the Legends Academy of Judges has inducted up to four Sport Legends of Wellington, supported by Nuku Ora (formerly Sport Wellington). The inductees must be an athlete with a close allegiance to the Wellington area, be retired at least 10 years from top competition, and be acknowledged icons who have made an indelible impact on our community through their accomplishments.

“It is a privilege to organise the induction of Tana, Lynnette, Duane and Olivia into the Sports Legends of Wellington,” says Nuku Ora Event Direct John Grieve. “They join an illustrious group of Wellingtonians who have all reached the pinnacle of their chosen sports.”

A fan-favourite for the Hurricanes, Tana Umaga represented the New Zealand All Blacks from 1997-2005, playing 74 tests and being named as captain of the national side in 2004. He played for the Hurricanes from the Super 12’s inception in 1996 and played 100 matches for the Wellington Lions. Umaga was awarded New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year in 2000.

Lynnette Brooky is one of New Zealand’s most successful golfers, turning professional in 1994 and spending the majority of her playing career mainly on the Ladies European Tour (LET). She won four LET tournaments including back-to-back French Opens, and went on

to win a further four in the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour. She also represented New Zealand in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Women’s World Cup of Golf.

Duane Kale is New Zealand as a Paralympic swimmer who won four golds, along with a silver and bronze at the 1996 Summer Paralympics. He was also the Chef de Mission for the New Zealand Paralympic Team at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Paralympics. In 1997 Kale was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to swimming.

New Zealand’s highest performing female weightlifter at the Commonwealth and Olympic games, Olivia Baker finished eighth in the 75+ kilograms combined category at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 2002, she won a silver medal in the 75+ kilograms snatch and two bronze medals for the 75+ kilograms clean and jerk and the 75+ kilograms combined at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

“The accomplishments of these four iconic athletes will undoubtedly inspire future generations to reach their goals,” Grieve says.

“I’m glad there is an opportunity to recognise the legacy their achievements have created in communities throughout the Wellington region, and beyond.”

The new Legends will unveil their plaques on Tuesday June 22 at the ASB Sports Centre, joining the 56 previous inductees in the Sports Legends of Wellington programme.

They will then be formally celebrated at The Dominion Post Sport and Recreation Awards on Wednesday June 23.

Tana Umaga will be one of four sporting icons to be inducted as Sport Legends of Wellington later this month.

Nothing super about current rugby product The Super Rugby Australasia concept is dead already.

After just three weeks, Aussie teams were 1-14 and it took ill discipline from the Chiefs to help the Reds get at least one win on the board.

It means an all-Kiwi final was on the menu with three weeks of games still to go.

The teams from across the ditch have been flogged in almost every game making the prospect of multiple Kiwi teams going unbeaten

over the five weeks highly likely.

That means that an unbeaten team could miss the final which is laughable in its on right.

Yes, the top two qualify, but it’s highly likely three teams could be unbeaten with one more than a little unlucky to miss out.

The product is poor, many of the games are heavy on whistle and TMO involvement.

Reset scrums and replays for potential foul play stifle the flow of most games which irritates

everyone except Sky commentator and referee wannabe Kane Hames who can’t stop talking about the officials.

The people have also given their thumbs down to the product.

When the Brumbies played the Chiefs in Hamilton, the crowd was just over 10,000.

When the Reds went to Dunedin the week after they were crowned Super Rugby AU champions, fewer than 11,000 locals could be persuaded to attend.

The competition is not capturing the attention of Kiwi fans.

Australia does not have the depth to support five teams.

Truly less is more with the Aussies, when they had three teams at the start of the Super 12 concept, they were able to concentrate their talent and be highly competitive.

The Waratahs are horrendous for some unknown reason and the Rebels and Force are full of names from yester-year like Jeremy Thrush and Richard Kahui.

The odds are forming that the Aussie teams will lose every game of this competition.

You can get $7 for the bet in Australia.

Yes, there’s a global pandemic but this is not a product worth investing in at its current stage.

Congratulations to whoever will end up winning it but the Crusaders won Super Rugby Aotearoa and that’s the alpha competition, not this version which is at best uninspiring.

Late rally not enough for North Wellington

Bon Jovi’s song wasn’t written with the Men’s Central Football League in mind but there is no doubt that we’re halfway there and all teams are livin’ on a prayer, one way or the other at the moment.

In North Wellington’s case they’ve got to hold on to what they’ve got because it was Wairarapa United who nabbed all the points at Alex Moore Park on Saturday in a topsy turvy 4-3 win to the team from Masterton. The match report showed that Gavin Hoy put Norths in front after just one minute but the truth of it was that it was just 24 seconds from kick off before Hoy tapped in from close range after a well worked team move and good service from Cam McKenzie.

Wairarapa must have been suffering from jet lag because they narrowly survived two more close encounters in the next few minutes and looked very vulnerable across the park. That all changed after quarter of an hour though and the green machine finally cranked into life with an exceptional goal

from Jonty Roubos who let loose a powerful shot from a narrow angle well outside the area. Roubos made it 2-1 to Wairarapa before the half time break after slicing through the Norths defence. Things got worse for Norths at the 50 minute mark as they were somehow found to have tripped an opposition player in the penalty area. The chance was converted with ease to make it 3-1 to Wairarapa. But wait, there’s more. Cameron Lindsay made it 4-1 to the visitors after 53 minutes and the home supporters’ mood was as dark as the clouds.

Norths rallied thanks to two fine pieces of individual brilliance.

Jesse Randall scored a brilliant long distance goal just a minute later and the last score of the game became a double for Gavin Hoy after one of his trade mark set piece moves.

Norths couldn’t salvage a draw after one final effort hit the cross bar and the referees whistle confirmed a 4-3 victory to Wairarapa.

The teams move to 23 points each and Miramar retain top sport with a vastly superior goal difference.

Wainuiomata remain bottom of the table without a point after Petone travelled over the hill for a 4-2 win. Petone have created a 6 point buffer over Wainuiomata and are just 2 points behind North Wellington who sit in 8th place on

8 points. Lower Hutt prevailed 4-2 over Waterside Karori and Western Suburbs were too strong at home for Napier City Rovers with a 4-1 win.

Lower Hutt are sitting comfortably in third place on 19 points with the best of the rest sitting between 10 and 14 points.

In the fiercely competitive Men’s Premier League, North Wellington hosted Stop Out for a 2 all draw.

Wellington United hold a narrow one point lead over Stop Out in the battle to win promotion to the Central League in 2022. In the Women’s Premier League, the top of the table Innkeeper North Wellington side, hosted third place Upper Hutt City.

In a tense encounter Norths held on to an early goal to eventually prevail 1-0 and retain top spot on goal difference over Wellington United.

Johnsonville’s sluggish starts came back to hurt them once again in their 27-17 defeat to the Wellington Axemen on Saturday.

Johnsonville conceded two tries inside the first five minutes to ensure they were chasing the game against the previously winless hosts.

This was a game the team would have targeted to earn maximum points but it was not to be.

The loss leaves Johnsonville with just two wins from eight

games.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson lamented another slow start.

“Our warm-ups are top-notch so I’m not sure why we struggle with our starts,” he says.

“It just felt we were playing catch-up the entire game.

“We had several penalties on their try line but we just struggled to make it happen.

“Our scrum dominated at times but not so much when we were hot on attack.”

Jason says patience has been an issue for the team as well as heavy workloads to key players.

The ever reliable Andrew Ellis, who was back at fullback, dotted down, as did No 10 Niall Delahunt.

Jason says he expected to have more wins than two by this point of the season.

“It’s been challenging and I really thought we’d have more Ws right now.”

Jason praised “workhorse” prop Ha’amea Ahio as someone who was leading the way.

Johnsonville will host Tawa, who sit third on the table, at Helston Park during Johnsonville’s Old Timer’s Day on Saturday.
