Inspired by Movember Continued from page 1 Jordan has set up a GoFundMe page and even before he had started his first climb on Monday afternoon over $1,000 had been donated, with all donations going to the Movember movement.

He had been thinking of ways to raise funds for a while and woke up with the idea one morning and decided to get stuck in.

Jordan has had his own struggles with mental health he says and knows how tough it can be.

“I’m out here showing people that I care, and I’m here for them, I’m here to support their mental health, I’m here to listen to their struggles, I want to be here for my friends and my family and my community,” Jordan says.

“I want to help by raising money, raising awareness or just being there to listen and I want others to help me too.”

“I’ve had my own struggles with mental health and it was hard, real hard.”

Jordan attends a weekly group in Wainuiomata called 4thebros which is dedicated to

talking, listening and helping young guys like him with mental health.

“I’m wearing my firefighting gear to show my commitment to my community and to my fire fighting family, I’m here for them too,” he says.

Jordan is being supported on his climb by friends Sapphire Cavie, Donald Underdown and Tom Oldfield.

Wainuiomata’s Dallas Serj who was the driving force behind the Youth Services Union in the Lower Hutt and Wellington region has decided to step down from the position of chairman of the union.

Instrumental in leading a campaign for better mental health education in schools is Wainuiomata’s Dallas Serj, a year 13 student when the union was formed, bring together students from throughout the North Island to petition government for better mental health education in schools.

Along with other memebers of the union he presented a case to provide better mental health education in schools, to Labour minister of education Chris Hipkins.

Armed with statistics from Labour policies and from the Unions own investigations the group proposed that Labour finally put the effort into putting mental health into the education curriculum.

After the meeting Dallas says they came away bitterly disappointed.

The Union had garnered massive support from communities around the North Island and gathered over 6000 signatures.

He says calling for better mental health education in schools is not about publicity The group just want to see what is desperately needed and that is suppport for youth where support is needed.

Dallas will be stepping down while remaining on the board but wants to focus more on his political career.

He will be focusing more on his other jobs and making sure he can be the best version of himself possible.

Dallas wasn’t just the chairman but the founder and the Board has been unable to find someone who’d be willing to step up and take that role on.

Dallas will still continue to serve his community as if he is running a one man charity.

Art exhibition reaches across generations There’s a lot to be gained from generations working together.

That’s the view of former Wainuiomata community board member and Hutt City councillor and artist Margaret Willard.

Margaret has been working on a joint art exhibition with her granddaughter Marie Burling, Entitled 17:72 Generations, the exhibition will be held at Wellington’s Thistle Hall from 2-7 November.

Kaitoke-based Marie, 17, is a painter and emerging tattoo artist.

“I’ve liked having the freedom to express myself in my art since I left school,” she says. “It’s helped me through some tough times.”

Her dad has offered himself as her blank canvas to practise tattooing on until she gets paid work, and is happy with the results so far.”

Margaret is passionate about conserving our native wildlife.

She uses photography and

unique eco-printing and cyanotype techniques to depict native plants and puts them together in collage to create landscapes, wildlife and abstract designs.

Margaret who now lives on the Kapiti coast is a Level 6 student at Hutt-based The Learning Connexion School of Creativity and Art. Also a writer, she has written a creative nonfiction piece for a competition promoted by Zealan-

dia, about the life of a 400-yearold beech tree near her former home in Wainuiomata.

Copies will be available at the exhibition, free to purchasers of works by herself and Marie.

The different focus of each artist in one exhibition, Margaret says, is illustrative of how different perspectives can be of value in tackling the challenges we face.

“It enriches us all, and it’s fun to learn.”

Police warn of IRD phone scam Police want to warn people to be wary of another phone scam circulating at the moment.

In this case callers receive a call from someone claiming to be the Inland Revenue Department who then attempts to obtain the victim’s credit card information.

The phone number the scammers use is a New Zealand number,

however it’s likely the offender is offshore.

These kinds of scams run constantly and while most people will not respond or buy into them, some people are more vulnerable.

We urge people to have conversations with vulnerable or elderly family members, to help ensure they are aware of the tactics often

used by scammers and don’t become victims.

Please remember that government agencies will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your password, credit card or bank details.

Police’s message on scams like this is simple – do not engage with anyone on the phone if you think you are being scammed – hang

up immediately and report the incident.

If you are in doubt as to a caller’s legitimacy, ask if you can call them back, or just hang up.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam, in person, over the phone or online, should immediately report it to their bank, and then to their local Police.

Traditional healing The traditional Samoan medicinal plant matalafi has been found by a group of researchers to be as effective as ibuprofen for treating inflammation.

“Matalafi is used in two ways in Samoa—to treat illnesses attributed to ghosts, and to treat various forms of inflammation,” says indigenous Samoan Dr Seeseei Molimau-Samasoni, who discovered the underlying molecular mechanism of matalafi, and her research was subsequently built upon by the postdoctoral research of Dr Helen Woolner (Cook Islands Māori).

The research has shown that matalafi exhibits anti-inflammatory activity remarkably similar to that of ibuprofen.

Iron chelators like matalafi also have the potential to treat iron overload associated with transfusions, and have been identified as prospective agents against common diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.

New data from Property Council New Zealand suggests that over 6,100 buildto-rent homes could be in the market within two years if the Government loosens the reins on the legislative barriers holding the sector back. Further analysis suggests this number could swell to over 25,000 new homes within a decade.

Ministry for disabled people The announcement of a new Ministry for Disabled People, under the Ministry for Social Development, has been hailed as a much-needed development by the Grey Power Federation.

President Jan Pentecost says the new ministry will be a welcome opportunity for disabled

people to have a say in policies which affect them.

She says they will give whatever assistance and advice the new ministry needed, particularly in relation to the needs of disabled senior people who have serious issues with work opportunities, health, incomes, and housing.

Need help getting to sleep?

Recently I have been struggling with getting a full night’s sleep. So, after doing some research, I discovered these half-dozen key habits that have helped me, and suggest you try them too: 1. Stick to a sleeping schedule Set aside between seven and eight hours each night for sleeping, with regular start and finish times, even at weekends. If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes, then get up and do something relaxing.

2. Be careful what you eat and drink Avoid eating large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Also, be cautious with nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol.

3. Create a restful environment Exposure to light can make it harder to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime. Then make your bedroom as quiet and dark as possible to help you drift off.

4. Limit daytime naps If you choose to nap, limit yourself to a maximum of 30 minutes, and

avoid doing so late in the day.

5. Include physical activity in your daily routine Regular physical activity can help to promote better sleep. But avoid being active too close to bedtime.

Getting fresh air every day may be helpful, too.

6. Manage worries Try to resolve worries or concerns before bedtime. Jot down what’s on your mind, and then set it aside for tomorrow. Stress management practices can also be of assistance.

Start with the basics such as getting organised, setting priorities, and delegating tasks.

Nearly everyone has the occasional sleepless night. But if it becomes a habit that’s hard to break, it might be time to consider seeking professional help or medication.

Barber shop duo

By Gerald Rillstone With the help of the Wainuiomata’s Chopping Block Barber Shop and support from the community Michaela Orzecki-Sayer has a new career.

Michaela and Araiyah Te Uawiri Te Kura Moana have trained under the watchful eye and guidance of Chopping Block owner and musician Robbie Morgan.

Robbie is on a mission in the community to help as many people as he can and training them on how to cut hair with the aim of giving people a new skill which opens up new opportunities for them.

Michaela lives across the road from the shop and had been job searching for almost a year.

She was helping clean the shop windows while getting the place ready to move to level two and Robbie suggested she give barbering a try.

Michaela admits she had never attempted cutting hair before and had been a bit scared to try.

“And being a stay at home mum interacting with people again was scary.”

“My youngest just turned four and I was trying to find something that fitted with school hours because I have a 9 - year- old as well,” she says.

“I needed something that would fit in with looking after my girls when I needed to.”

Michaela spent a few hours a day learning for a month before getting stuck in and is now fully comfortable with her newly learned skill.

A sausage sizzle was held and enough funds were raised for a left handed pair of scissors which Robbie says is testament to how supportive the community is.

“The equipment is around $300 and with the sausage sizzle we raised half the money with the community helping out. We weren’t looking for government handouts and we all knocked heads to fund-raise,” Robbie says.

an open mic night and had always wanted to cut hair.

“I had been working in the mental health industry and wanted to have a break and do something completely different,” she says.

“I still wanted to help in the com-

munity and to be given this opportunity to do this work during the day as a barber and be musician at night is great.”

The goal for Michael is to be able to take the barbering skills with her whereever she goes.

We were trying to make its as easy as we can for people to come to the school and see it but the only way to do it was to allocate people times and that was not going to work.

“It is a shame because that was our third try.”

“What we are going to do now is offer an open door and they can come and have a look around just give us a ring and we

will do it,” Craig says. “if we had pulled out all the stops we could have done it but then does it look to the community that we are not taking our responsibilities seriously around COVID.” There will still be prizes drawn for new enrolments that are in

by Friday November the 5th.

“At the end of the week everyone that has an enrolment in will be in the draw for a $100 voucher from either Clive The Chemist or Creative Meats and we have had quite a few enrolments in,” Craig says.

It has been tough for everyone he says but more so for the year eights and the Kapa Haka group.

“Our Kapa Haka inter-school competition has been canceled again and for the year eights that is two years they haven’t had anyone to perform to and we can’t do a parent competition because there are too many kids in the group,” Craig says.

“Those guys have worked so hard every week for two years with long hours of learning new routines and they won’t have that chance to showcase it, and for the parents who won’t get to

see how much their kids have grown over the two years, it is sad.”

It has been the same for most events including sports.

Despite the restrictions next week the students will be heading away on camp and the school dance will still go ahead but parents won’t be able to come in and see the last dance which has always been part of the evening.

“We are not allowed to live stream the prize giving but we are trying to work around that as well,” Craig says.

Bat bird of the year A native bat has been named as New Zealand’s 2021 Bird of the Year.

This year is the first time the long-tailed bat, pekapeka-touroa, was included in the contest.

Bats are New Zealand’s only native land mammal.

Pekapeka-tou-roa had the most number one-ranked votes – 7031

– in the contest. Kakapo, which won in 2020, was runner-up with 4072 votes, while rifleman/ titipounamu received 2808 votes. The two-week contest, organised by Forest & Bird, closed on Sunday with more than 56,733 votes in total, the most it has ever received.

The Maori word ‘manu’ in the

competition’s name, Te Manu Rongonui o te Tau, does not only mean birds, but includes many flying creatures including bats, Forest & Bird said.

Earthquake recording Scientists have this week begun installing the densest network yet of earthquake-recording equipment along the South Island’s hazardous Alpine Fault.

The Southern Alps Long Skinny Array (SALSA) project features more than 50 highly sensitive seismometers strung along the fault about every 10km between Springs Junction and Milford Sound/Piopiotahi.

Santa speaks Te Reo In the past year there has been a huge response to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori and including more Reo in our everyday lives. NZ Post and Santa understand the importance and NZ Post is proud to be for the third year, offering the magical connection of Writing to Santa for Kiwi kids to receive a response in Te Reo Maori.

NZ Post General Manager of Consumer Marketing and Brand, Sarah Sandoval says “for the third year, Kiwi kids have the opportunity to receive replies from Santa in two of our three official languages – Te Reo Maori and English.”

“Last year NZ Post responded to almost 75,000 letters to Santa,

and this year we’re looking forward to helping Santa receive these responses, and deliver replies to even more children this year. Messages can be sent online using our interactive website or by post” Sarah says.

National Oral Health Day National Oral Health Day will be observed on Friday 5 November.

Oral health is vitally important, but many of us don’t - or don’t know how to - take care of our teeth and gums properly.

Run by the New Zealand Dental Association, National Oral Health Day is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of oral health through education, advocacy and access to oral care, and

with a focus on a ‘switch to water’ and away from sugary drinks.

What’s the best drink to reach for?

The best drink to reach for is always 100% water. Water is cool, fresh and always on hand. It’s also free (out of the tap). And it’s calorie/kilojoule free - unlike the drinks above, which contain sugar (excluding calorie-free versions, which are still acidic and can

harm our dental health).

Even if we pay attention to how much sugar is in our food, we may not think about how much sugar is in our drink. And – even if the drink is perceived as good for us, such as fruit juice – you may be surprised to know the answer is often “quite a lot”.

Unfortunately due to the current circumstances with Level 2 decided have decided not to go ahead with their big outdoor community event this year and have instead

decided they will do an online Christmast in the NUI 2021 event.

Hall repairs underway By: Gerald Rillstone Work is underway to repair corrosion to the portal frame leg and hold down connection for the hall which reduced the shear capacity and uplift resistance for the building.

An inspection in March 2020 found the corrosion damage which according to a report may have been caused by an accumulation of debris and prolonged moisture

around the portal frame legs.

Repairs to the building were scheduled earlier this year but multiple delays in starting the work due to COVID, staff turnover, contractor availability and consent issues have held up progress.

The new expected date was then set for April 2021 but was subject to the findings of a further investigation and at last the work is underway with no date for it to be reopened yet.

Metlink and NZ Bus join the Movember mo-vement In support of Movember, Metlink buses operated by NZ Bus will be donning a new ‘facial’ feature in November.

In favour of the movement, Metlink’s Manager of operations, Melissa Anderson is all for the giant moustaches that NZ Bus will be displaying on the front of their fleet of buses.

“Metlink and NZ Bus are proud to help raise awareness of this worthy cause and encourage others to give it a ‘twirl’ added Anderson.

The Movember movement focuses on men’s health in three areas: mental health, suicide prevention and prostate and testicular cancer.

The freshly ‘grown’ moustaches on bus fronts will be seen predominately by Wellington City and Eastbourne customers, the primary areas NZ Bus service in the region.

However, Melissa Anderson thinks the support will be seen region wide.

“I have no doubt the giant mo’s on the buses and any efforts grown by our front line team will inspire some great lip looks from Wellingtonians and hopefully extra contribution to the overall fundraising effort”.

Asked which style of moustache she would like to see Wellingtonians try, Anderson joked “I think

“It is an acknowledgement of the work of our 2,500 volunteers across Aotearoa who deliver our service to clients in a way that is both easy for them to understand, and that also includes empathy and respect for those clients.”

Dr Hubbard says that making it easy for everyone to understand and act on their rights is a key part of the work of Citizens Advice Bureau and so he was particularly pleased to see the judges’ comments. One judge commented that “This is the most complete example of Plain English that I have seen. I can’t speak highly enough of their work and the way they provide their information to all that use CAB”.

Another judge was “particularly impressed by CAB’s understanding of how communicating clearly — whether it’s face-to-face, over the phone, using

web-chat, through email and other written communication or via their website — is key to their effectiveness.

And then they take it one extra step to acknowledge the importance of communicating with empathy and respect on top of that!”

“It’s more important than ever that people have access to really clear and simple information which meets their needs,” Dr Hubbard says . He notes that the CAB is also very proud that the organisation’s website www.cab. org.nz received an Award of Distinction as a finalist in the Best Plain English Website — Public Sector category. “It’s a fantastic achievement for our small but very talented team of content writers”.

Drain well.

Grease a 30 x 24 x 6cm dish or bain-marie pan.

Keep eyes wide open when gardening: By Wally Richards Being a good spotter is half the battle in solving gardening problems. Gardeners that keep their eyes open as they go around their gardens can spot problems as they begin to happen.

One of the best times to do this is while you are hand watering plants with the hose using a watering wand; while the right hand is holding the wand, you can fold back leaves with your left hand and check for pests or problems.

For instance psyllids on Photinia (Red Robin) if you were to spray the foliage with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with Raingard added two weekly about now for a couple of months then the grubs would not be able to enter the leaves and cause the distortions.

Aphids are also in season at the moment and they can be found on your roses and some other plants.

On the roses they will be around WKH QHZ JURZWKV DQG WKH À RZHU buds. If you just leave them, their populations will quickly build up and this will likely diminish the À RZHULQJ GLVSOD\ $SKLGV DUH QRW hard to kill and if you only have a few roses you may simply run your ¿ QJHUV RYHU WKH SHVWV DQG JHQWO\ squash them without harming the plant. For those with a lot of roses it is better to use a safe spray to knock them over such as Wallys Super Pyrethrum. Use only late in the day just before dusk make up say 5 litres of spray using 2.5 mils of Super Pyrethrum, 25 mils of Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil and 50 mils of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

The Pyrethrum is a quick knock GRZQ WKDW VKRXOG NLOO R൵ PRVW RI the aphids within a day. The Neem Tree Oil will aid in the control of any missed or new aphids arriving for the next 7 odd days.

This natural oil will also aid in the reduction of diseases such as black spot, rust and mildews. The reason for spraying near dusk is that Pyrethrum is quickly broken down

by UV, in fact within a couple of hours, if sprayed earlier in the day.

At dusk it is going to be active all night till the next day.

Now that your roses are coming LQWR EXG DQG À RZHU VWDUW DSSO\LQJ about a teaspoon of Fruit and Flower Power every 4 to 6 weeks.

7KH SRWDVVLXP DLGV LQ À RZHULQJ and the magnesium aids the deep green of the foliage.

7KH FXUO\ OHDYHV DUH WKH H൵ HFWV RI the common disease. Curly Leaf and every leaf that is damaged means one less leaf for the tree to gain energy from the sun.

The damaged or curly leaves will ODWHU IDOO R൵ WKH WUHH OHDYLQJ RQO\ WKH OHDYHV WKDW DUH QRW D൵ HFWHG Leaf loss means a smaller crop and maybe smaller fruit as well. <RX FDQ R൵ VHW VRPH RI WKH GDPDJH by spraying the good leaves with Vaporgard.

Vaporgard acts as a sun screen UHGXFLQJ WKH 89 OHYHOV ZKLFK D൵ HFW the plant’s ability to produce energy from the sun. One spray lasts for about 3 months on the foliage sprayed.

Within a couple of days of spraying you will notice the leaves turning to a rich dark green which means each leaf is working at full capacity, gaining energy.

Some gardeners like to spray Vaporgard onto the foliage of their roses to deepen the green colour and place a long term shine to the leaves. It also means your roses will EH PRUH YLJRURXV DQG À RZHU EHWWHU 2QH SRLQW WR PHQWLRQ LV WKDW WKH ¿ OP Vaporgard puts over the foliage PDNHV LW GL൶ FXOW IRU VSUD\V VXFK as Perkfection to enter the plant.

To get around this add Raingard to the sprays.

Tomatoes will be doing well if in a sheltered, sunny spot. Those out in the open will be much slower

to grow because of the weather and cold snaps. I have kept my tomato plants in containers in the glasshouse, waiting for the weather to settle before starting to put them outdoors. When I decide it’s time to put them out I will, a couple of days before hand, give them a spray all over with Vaporgard. This hardens the plants up and stops any transplant shock. Tomatoes in containers must be given adequate water to prevent the compost from drying out, if not you will get blossom end rot which is that black patch on the bottom of the fruit.

Strawberries planted in winter should be doing well by now and LI WKH\ DUH ¿ UVW \HDU SODQWV VWLOO D bit on the small size, you should UHPRYH VRPH RI WKH HDUO\ À RZHUV so the plants can grow bigger before you let them fruit. Spray the strawberry plants every 2 weeks or so with Mycorrcin.

This simple, natural spray feeds WKH EHQH¿ FLDO PLFUREHV ZKLFK ZLOO not only keep the plants healthy but can increase your crop yield by 200 to 400%. I had one gardener ring me a couple of weeks ago and tell of his success last season.

He had two beds of strawberries, one he sprayed regularly with Mycorrcin, the other he didn’t. The Mycorrcin treated bed produced masses of big, sweet strawberries where the other bed was just the normal so-so crop. He said if he had not done the trial with the two beds he would not have believed the SRVVLEOH GL൵ HUHQFH

Christmas festivities reined in for COVID This year’s A Very Welly Christmas festival is taking a year off due to COVID uncertainty, but in its place there’ll be lots of events and activities celebrating the festive season – and supporting local businesses.

In what would’ve been the events 6th year, organisers have regrettably made the difficult decision to put this year’s event on ice as unpredictable COVID restrictions impact the planning of major festivals.

Organisers and stakeholders are now working through logistics and opportunities to ensure a different kind of Christmas cheer will ring around the capital come December.

Mayor Andy Foster says: “I am very proud of the Council team who are busy reimagining this year’s Christmas festivities with a priority on the city’s safety and well-being given COVID is still very much a threat to our lives.

“I have every confidence that early in the new year given the determined success of Super Shot Saturday, coupled with high rates of vaccinations, we will see the return of our favourite events.

“Right now, our focus is on loving local and if you haven’t already, Take Two for

the Team as Wellington spends Christmas in our stellar shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, and supporting the city’s arts sector,” adds the Mayor.

Plans for December festivities are yet to be confirmed, but will resemble 2020’s Love Local campaign with pop-up shops, banners, dressed up storefronts, and incentives to encourage Christmas shopping and activities in the city.

City Events Manager Suzanne Tamaki says events and venues have taken a bit of a battering this year with cancellations, postponements and capacity restrictions, but adapting and adjusting to the conditions is part of the job.

“In Wellington we’re used to having to think fast on our feet and come up with creative solutions for every eventuality, but the global pandemic has provided its own set of challenges.

“Health and safety is key, and also supporting the many organisations and industries that are struggling around the city. But we also want to provide fun and entertainment for the whole wh nau to enjoy – and we are aiming to deliver an experience that ticks all those boxes.”

Jarvo’s antics lose their jolly nature I’m over “Jarvo” invading the playing arena at major sporting events.

Yes, I’m happy to embrace my inner-old man at 32-years-old and say his antics are not acceptable and no longer funny.

Like the boy who cried wolf, his act is now tired and silly.

Jarvo, who made headlines earlier this year after getting onto Lord’s during a cricket match struck again

on Sunday after standing next to the All Blacks in full kit at the start of the national anthem ahead of the morning’s test in Cardiff.

Daniel ‘Jarvo’ Jarvis, who also made it onto the field at an NFL game in London this month, was dressed in the All Blacks jersey and ran on to the field to stand at the end of the team line, next to reserve Tyrel Lomax for the start of the anthem.

To Jarvo’s credit, he was wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Many will enjoy his antics and see them as harmless and so far he has never threatened the safety of players or spectators with his shenanigans.

However, his constant ability to breach security highlights just how easy it is to do and it shows how it

can be done to those who have more sinister motives than just 15 seconds of fame on television.

There have been pitch invaders for many decades, mostly men, most of them naked.

But one day, there is going to be an incident and then security will be thrust into the spotlight once more.

Then what? Players are hard to access now more than ever.

Gone are the days of crowds streaming onto the playing surface at the conclusion of the match and probably with good reason but with that comes the challenge of making sports people accessible to those who pay to watch them play or aspire to wear their jersey one day.

While Jarvo has his fun, the consequences could be less fun for others in the future.

Road champs come to a close 2021 has been another year of challenges, and another year with many activities and sports cancelled. Last year the Wellington running calendar was massively disrupted, and only one interclub race was held. This year we managed to have all but one race go ahead as planned. This is possibly one advantage of having a smaller club than most. But small in numbers is definitely big in ideas, organisation, character, fun, and friendly faces.

Our most recent club event was the Moores Valley Handicap races using Moores Valley Road and Hine Road as our course. With conditions a little on the windy side, it was surprising that all juniors managed to improve on their time from last year. The biggest

improvement though, came from under 20 mens runner Cameron Forsyth, who improved by over a minute on last years time in the senior 7.414km race.

Wainuiomata Harriers have also been hosting the Wellington road running championships for the last 12 years, the latest of which was last Saturday. This event is held on Waterworks Road and involves athletes from all over the Wellington region. It is a selection race for the National Championships being held in Hamilton in a few weeks, so athletes were looking for a good result on the usually fast course.

Due to the challenges of level two, the organising committee was forced to ban spectators again and limit race numbers to 100 people.

NZ Rugby called out The tarnishing of New Zealand Rugby has been called out again after an open letter by prominent New Zealanders opposing the deal with INEOS was delivered to the organisation.

The letter, organised by Kiwis in Climate, a group of New Zealanders working locally and abroad in climate and related fields, is signed by more than 100 people and is being applauded by Greenpeace Aotearoa. Signatories include busi-

nessmen Phillip Mills and Malcolm Rands, environmentalist Dame Anne Salmond, former All Blacks Bob Burgess and Chris Laidlaw, and musician Neil Finn. New Zealand Rugby has been called out for deserting its own principles, which include ‘to be a good ancestor’ and ‘write your own legacy’.

“At the time the deal was struck with oil and plastic polluting petrochemical giant INEOS, Greenpeace Aotearoa vehemently opposed it.

INEOS is responsible for driving us deeper into the climate crisis, and fouling the oceans with plastic pollution,” Greenpeace campaigner Juressa Lee says .

“This open letter by well known New Zealanders should indicate again to NZ Rugby that they have made a grave error of judgement in siding with INEOS.This is another reminder of how destructive this deal would be for people of the Pacific.

“The letter suggests the deal ‘high

tackles our Pacific neighbours who are hit with the worst effects of climate change’, and it’s absolutely right. Our players are being asked to carry water for a brand that is desecrating our environment.

“I’ve often thought about our players, especially the Maori and Pasifika players, and what they might be feeling. The Pacific Islands are on the frontline of the climate crisis and the threat to fresh water and food security is clear and present,”

Juressa says.

The six-year deal with British petro-chemical giant INEOS will see the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Maori All Blacks and other New Zealand rugby teams wear the Ineos logo on their shorts, and training jerseys.

At the time of the deal announcement, Greenpeace Aotea roa launched it’s own petition to cancel the deal which now has over 19,000 signatures.
