Driving for teens
By Megan Connolly
YOUth Inspire is helping the youth of Wainuiomata get some real experience behind the wheel of a car as part of their new Community Driving School that started last week. The driving school is the next phase for YOUth Inspire who started the learner’s test classes last year, which sees students work on getting their learner licences. For many young people, licence breaches are a gateway into the justice system because they are driving outside of their restrictions. The school is hoping to change this by helping young people go through the graduated system. Continued on page 2. YOUth Inspire is getting the students, like Shamal Reddy, driving with a mentor like Jim McCluskey as part of the new Community Driving School.

Continued from page 1. The programme has students drive regularly with volunteer mentors so that they can get their hours of practice driving up before they sit their test. For student Shamal Reddy, getting some hands-on experience and having the opportunity to do regular driving means he’s one step closer to his dream job of working with cars. “I have a love of cars and love working on them but it would be better if I could drive them. I want to be an auto mechanic” Shamal says. One of the biggest barriers to employment for youth is not having their driver’s licence, according to the manager of YOUth Inspire, Alison Black. “Around 70 per cent of jobs require a drivers licence,” Alison says. For the two students, Satori Morgan and Rawiri Waru, it’s a chance for them to practice because they don’t really do much driving at home. So far, the course has 23 mentors trained up and two cars ready for driving but would love more, according to Alison. Jim McCluskey spent 20 years in the army reserve as a territorial transport officer, a past business owner and is now a

Wainuiomata Community Champions hosted David White last week at the Wainuiomata community hub for a talk on domestic violence. As part of a national tour, David talked about the devastating loss of his daughter, Helen Mead, to family harm in 2009. David’s daughter was mur-
dered by her husband after suffering years of physical and psychological violence. The message David hopes to pass on is that ‘change is always possible’. According to one of the organisers, Keri Brown from Community Champions, it was a “really good night” “David was a lovely speaker.” Keri says.
Family violence can often be a hard subject to talk about so organisers were very happy with the audience turnout. The Wainuiomata Community Champions focus on encouraging members of the community to reach out and listen going forward this year. “We want to stand by our community and support and help them and let them know
it’s okay to ask for help,” Keri says. By holding talks like the one with David, Community Champions hope to keep the conversation going around family harm. “It’s letting people know that it’s about sitting beside and helping one another by listening when someone reaches out,” Keri says.

Daylight Saving: time to check your smoke alarms By Megan Connolly
The time has come for us to turn our clocks back one hour this Saturday night ahead of Daylight Saving switching over early Sunday morning. Turning our clocks back is also a great opportunity to make sure that your home is fire safe by checking all the smoke alarms are working, Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade senior station chief, Peter Thompson, says.
“Daylight saving is a good time of the year and mark to remember to check your alarms,” Peter says. To check your smoke alarm all you need to do is push the button and wait for a sound. “If you have a year-long battery, now is a good time to replace them,” Peter says. For those that may have trouble accessing or testing your smoke alarms, give the station a call and leave a message on their answering machine and they
will be happy to pop around to your house and help you out. “We can help you test and install them. “We can also do a home fire safety visit where we wander through the house and make an escape route with you. “It’s important to know two ways out and if you have young children, to practice it with them. Especially when it’s dark,” Peter says. Other important fire safety practices to think about as the
weather becomes cooler is safe heater practices, according to Peter. “Don’t overload multi boxes. Heaters should be plugged directly into the wall and at least one meter away from furniture, curtains and clothes.” Don’t forget to switch your clocks backwards one hour and stay fire safe! The Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade Station is often unattended so call 564 8340 and leave a message.

NZ dollar a ‘little changed’ The New Zealand dollar is little changed after better-than-expected Australian data, on top of better manufacturing data from China over the weekend, fuelled equity market rallies around Asia. The kiwi was trading at 68.22 US cents at 5pm in Wellington from 68.29 at 8am. The trade-weighted index was at 73.98 points from 74.07. The benchmark S&P/NZX 50 Index rose nearly a per cent to a fresh record. National Australia Bank’s latest survey found that perceptions of business conditions, driven by improvements in profitability, trading conditions and hiring, improved to 7 points in March from 4 points in February.

Students at Wainuiomata Primary School dressed up this week to celebrate the end of Movin’ March on Thursday. By Megan Connolly
It was buzzing at Wainuiomata Primary School on Thursday as they donned their best in their best superhero and dress up costumes. The dress-up day was also a way to celebrate the end of Movin’ March which encourages students
to walk, scooter or bike to school. The month-long event run by Greater Wellington Regional Council in partnership with local councils. Almost 34,000 year zero to eight students from 125 schools in the region participated in the free event.
In past years Greater Wellington has surveyed teachers and parents about the outcomes of Movin’March but this year they included students in the feedback process. Assistant Principal of Wainuiomata Primary School, Frances McCarthy, says there has been

a huge increase of scooters and bikes at the school. “We’ve got a circuit and a bike track on the field,” Frances says. The students also decorated their bikes and scooters on Thursday and paraded them to the rest of the school on Thursday morning.
New Zealanders are being asked to take part in a survey on what they would do if they had prior warning that a strong earthquake was approaching and what type of early warning system best suit their community. Countries like Japan, Mexico and Taiwan have systems that give a warning from seconds to up to two minutes that strong earthquake shaking is about to strike. The Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) Survey for New Zealand is open now at www.surveymonkey.com/r/EEWNZ and closes at 5pm on 30 April.

It was a hugely successful College Reunion at the weekend that brought together hundreds of old friends who attended Wainuiomata College before it closed down. The weekend of reminiscing included a meet and greet on Friday evening with 500 people attending, a Hangi at the college on Saturday afternoon with around 200 people at-

tending, and a formal sit down dinner on Saturday night with 300 people attending. Organisers Tui Lewis, Larry Gladwell and Peter Rollinson were very happy with how the whole weekend went from the large crowds to the excitement of everyone attending. “It was wonderful to see so many people just sit and talk and reminisce,” Larry says. Many travelled for the reunion, some from as far as Britan,
the Netherlands and Australia. “Everyone came in with the same excitement and couldn’t wait for the next catch up,” Larry says. There was a real ‘Wainui buzz’ as everyone who hadn’t seen each other in over 30 to 40 years, came together, according to an ex-student, Karen Hema Rangi. “It had really been building up over the last three months. You were never going to expe-
rience it again because the college is going to be demolished. “It was a brilliant way to farewell the college,” Karen says. All the money raised from the event will be going back to community groups who helped out over the course of the weekend. “It was just awesome. Everyone went away with feelings of happiness in their heart and soul,” Karen says. PHOTOS: Megan Connolly

Roger and Margaret celebrate 60 years
The flu. Don’t get it. Don’t give it!
By Megan Connolly
It was a big anniversary bash for Roger and Margaret Hurman who celebrated 60 years of marriage at the weekend. The couple who married when they were 19 years old in 1959 say the secret to a long and happy marriage is tolerance and friendship. “It’s important to have shared interests and similar opinions. “We’re not just married, we’re friends,” Roger says. Over their 60 years of marriage they have learnt that it’s important that they don’t go to bed angry, to look after one another and join in each others hobbies and projects. “I’ve always said he’s got the brain but I’ve got the common sense,” Margaret laughs. The couple actually met at someone else’s wedding. Roger was invited because he had a record player and Margaret went because it was her friend’s sister’s wedding. “He asked me for a dance. I was quite scared because I was nervous but he knocked that out of me over the years,” Margaret says. Roger and Margaret have lived in Wainui since 1970, three years after they immigrated to New Zealand from England. Luckily, some of their family had already made the move to New Zealand so they had a lot of support when they first arrived.
There’s a nip in the air for sure lately. Which means now is the time to think about getting a flu shot. Clive reckons that almost everyone can benefit from the protection of an annual flu shot. Getting the flu is a major threat as it can spread quickly through the community. Not matter how fit, healthy, or tough you are, you’re not immune to the flu. It can strike at any time and will leave you unable to do just about anything. The flu can make you seriously ill and keep you in bed for at least a week. This is particularly true if you are elderly or have an ongoing medical condition. However, even if you don’t feel sick, you could still have the virus and pass it on to others. A common misunderstanding is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu. This is not true. The flu shot is made up of dead flu viruses, so you can’t catch the flu from them. What happens is that after your shot, your body learns
what the flu looks like, so if you are exposed to the virus your body can fight it off. Ideally, you should be vaccinated before May. Clive’s Chemist will have the flu shot available from April. Getting immunised is your best protection. For anyone over 65 the flu vaccine is free It’s quick, convenient, and you don’t need an appointment to get vaccinated at Clive’s. I’d much rather everyone came in now for a flu jab, than have to see everyone later for flu medication. The process is easy. One of the pharmacists at Clive’s will take you through some information regarding your vaccination to make sure the flu shot is right for you. Then, after the shot while you wait for 20 minutes we’ll even make you a cup of tea! Come in and see us now!

riage, the couple say many of their memorable moments were from when they were travelling around the world.

‘Scooteroos’ fixing up the streets
Wainuiomata Community Board Watch a new scooter group scooting around town. The organiser of the group Keri Brown and Barry Renshaw (right), who is the manager of the group. PHOTO: Supplied By Megan Connolly
A new community group have scooted into town and are cleaning up the streets. On the last Wednesday of every month the group meets and hopes to provide fellowship and talk ‘all things scooters’ for people who use walker aid, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The friendly group meets at the Community Hub Library from 10.30am to 11.30am and share a ‘cuppa’ while they listen to a guest speaker. “It’s a support group to encourage people to get out in a supported environment,” Keri Brown, one of the original organisers of the group, says. The idea was born when Keri was campaigning for the Community Board and met many people who were isolated and not getting out of the house because of their loss of mobility.
“I met a lot of people who weren’t going out because they weren’t confident. “The group is about making friendships, building skills and knowledge in a place where they can feel supported,” Keri says. Keri joined forces with local community legend Barry Renshaw to get the scooter community off the ground and to work on fixing many of the footpaths so they are up to the standard for mobility scooters to use. “It’s important because there’s a common interest and a common goal to be engaged in the community,” Keri says. Since they began at the start of the year, the group has grown to 15 members and even have cool group t-shirts on the horizon. “There has definitely been an improvement in everyone’s confidence and an increase in friendships,” Keri says. So far the group has helped several Scooteroos find new scooters and have access to affordable scooter parts.

Arakura School working bee By Megan Connolly
Arakura Primary School held a working bee at the school last Friday that had parents and children helping tidy up the grounds. The grounds needed some maintenance carried out, like adding new bark to the playground, the ground around the fruit trees needed weeding and mulching, but with the 75
helpers, it was done in no time. “It was a brilliant turn out,” board of trustees member, Katrina Barclay, says. The working bee has happened occasionally in the past but with the great community turnout, organisers are hoping to make it an annual event. A local parent who works at Bunnings Warehouse in Petone bought
along some fellow workmates. One of which was a horticulturist who enjoyed educating everyone on the plants in the area and will potentially come back to share some knowledge with the children of Arakura School in the future. “Everyone was laughing and joking and it was good to see some families we don’t usually see,” Katrina says.

Gabriel wants your thoughts
Gabriel Tupou and Daryl New sat down for a chat during a Community Board clinic session held in the library last week. There is another opportunity today to share your thoughts on the community today from noon. By Megan Connolly
It’s all about the personal touch for new chairperson of the Wainuiomata Community Board, Gabriel Tupou, who started the position in February. The change in leadership came when prior chairperson, Richard Sinnott, stepped down and has since taken on the support role of Deputy Chair. Gabriel, who is 26, is known not only for his beautiful tenor singing voice but his huge community involvement and love for Wainuiomata. Always busy, Gabriel is also the chair of the Manaaki Ability Trust, member of the Whaitua Te Whanganui a Tara Committee, board member of Te Whare Tane (a men’s refuge opening in the Hutt) and a White Ribbon Ambassador. “The Board is a talented, diverse range
of people who are committed to being an active force for the community. “We support supporting local initiatives, consulting the community on Council policies, allocating the Community Engagement Fund, supporting residents through Hutt City Council’s annual plan consultation and being an advocate of local issues affecting residents,” Gabriel says. Gabriel and the Community Board want to hear your thoughts and wants your input on projects coming up in the local region. Today from noon to 2pm Gabriel will be in the library wanting to hear your thoughts and aspirations for Wainuiomata. The next Wainuiomata Community Board meeting will be held on Monday, April 8 at the Wainuiomata Library meeting room. Everyone is welcome.

Akira - The All Blacks ace in the hole There should be two Ioane brothers in the All Blacks’ World Cup squad later this year. Winger Reiko is a certainty to make it and after sitting through most of the Blues’ win over the Stormers on Saturday night, Akira must make it too. The talented No 8 has always had potential written all over him. However the wrap on the older brother has always been that he can be all sizzle and no steak at times.
In many ways, he’s personified the frustrations of rugby north of the Bombay Hills for many years. So much talent, so little substance. He can be a damaging ball-runner and try-scorer but when it comes to the not so glitzy grind of the No 8 position, the 23-year-old can often go missing. Having said that, he helped Auckland to a provincial title in 2018 and his ferocity with ball in hand, especially in the close
Elesha serves tennis talent By Megan Connolly
Elesha Smith loves a good game of tennis. The 15-year-old started playing tennis when she was eight years old but it wasn’t until she was 11 that she really got more serious. “I started improving and hitting more so I thought I might as well keep going,” Elesha says. Third for her under 16 age group in Hutt, Elesha loves the competitive side of tennis. “When you win it’s individual. “Tennis is very much a head game,” Elesha says. Elesha trains for around eight hours a week which includes two squad nights with coach Mark Pollak, night leagues, inter-club competitions on Saturdays and the odd private lesson. “I like how hard everyone around me trains which really makes me step my game up,” Elesha says. The social aspect of tennis is
quarters makes him a necessary weapon for the men in black in Japan. Clearly he’s not going to unseat Kieran Read at the back of the scrum but he may be able to force his way onto the bench if the dynamic performances continue. I believe his time has finally arrived. Having Akira come on for the final 25 minutes of a test match against a tiring opposition forward pack might just be a
difference maker. Coach Steve Hansen could demand he play all out, empty the tank for a short, dynamic burst. His impact could be similar to when Beauden Barrett used his pace against an ailing defence when he was the back-up to Dan Carter. Barrett used speed, Akira would use power. Make no mistake, this World Cup will be harder to win than either 2011 or 2015.
Once-in-a-lifetime players have since retired and while we still have a couple, the gap between us and the rest of the world is getting smaller. Akira Ioane is a gamble in many respects. He’s everything the All Blacks haven’t been during their 10 years of utter dominance. He’s a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, but it’s time to unleash him and see what damage he can do.
Great day at the rugby
also a part Elesha enjoys. “There’s a lot of waiting around in between games so you get to know the girls playing. There’s a lot of downtime,” Elesha says. Since 2016, she has represented Wainui in 27 tournaments and Hutt Valley in seven rep fixtures. Her rank is Singles 6 (with one being the highest and 12 the lowest). “Not many people play competitively when they get older so it feels good to stick with it,” Elesha says. Elesha’s mum, Leanne Smith, is very proud of her daughter’s achievements and that she hasn’t given up. “ She d ef i n it ely g ive s it everything she’s got,” Leanne says. Two of the tennis players Elesha looks up to are Roger Federer for his sportsmanship and game etiquette, and young German tennis player called Alexandar Zverev.

Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club played Petone for the Rugby premiers. The scores are as follows: Rugby Premiers, Wainuiomata 18 v Petone 13, Reserves Petone 50 v Wainuiomata 12.
