Sharpie gets gong

Wainuiomata icon Bill Sharp, “Sharpie” has been awarded one of life’s most prestigious awards a Queens Service Medal for his dedication and service to youth.

For Sharpie getting the award was the biggest surprise of his life and receiving it was a day like no other and a memory he will always treasure.

Continued from page 1 Never one for personal accolades, the mere thought of being put on a pedestal Sharpie finds embarrassing but the QSM is something special.

For the last 24 years he has run the Futures Programme in Wanuiomata for at-risk students starting at 5 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week starting with an exercise session, often involving a run up Wainuiomata hill and back but always at the end a breakfast, usually at his own expense, and a mentoring session and help with their school work.

Over the decades he has been asked if the programme was successful and the answer was always yes.

“I have all kinds of things that I judge I have had four to five of the kids that have finished

up as head boy and I wasn’t responsible but I had a hand in it with the programme,” he says.

He has had students to go from the programme to become ministers and youth leaders .

“These kids have paid me back by the results and when I see the kids lives going in the right direction and I see their lives going up and I didn’t make them do it they wanted to do it.”

There were rules for all the students in the programme and Sharpie helped them make the rules with his guidance.

“If they broke the rules there was a red card and a yellow card, it was just like playing sport, they got a warning and then after that it was goodbye and the yellow card they were to keep in their pocket and every-time they went into their

Sharpies programme helped dozens of young men to get their lives

back in the right direction.

He gave more than 30 years of service to local sports clubs in the Wellington region, and more than 15 years of service to athletics coaching.

Exhibition entries open Wainuiomata art exhibition entries are now open and promoter Estelle Cainey is calling for one entry per person of any media that is safe.

“Open day is this Friday afternoon for children, and adults entries must be logged in with persons details and hanging preferences from this Wednesday onward at the gallery,” Estelle says.

Estelle would also like to thank Racen Architects who

are donating their space to the gallery.

She says the exhibition is a combination of art and creativity by Wainuiomata creatives, running on similar framework to previous years and a majority of the showcased artworks will be for sale.

“It’s an event enjoyed and celebrated by Wainuiomata and the wider community,” Estelle says.

Delivered by female scientists including Dr Kate Sparks, who has performed at events such as Nelson’s Inspire Festival and the Taranaki Energy Skills Science Fair, Science in Schools supports the New Zealand school curriculum at Levels 3-6. The live shows incorporate Maori myths and legends and are filled with experiments to captivate students and teachers alike.

Nanogirl’s Science in Schools programme was last in the city a year ago, with students at ten local primary and intermediate schools amongst the 10,000 children around the country to experience the shows that year, prior to COVID-19 which put plans for 2020 on hold.

Community directory Love Wainuiomata have teamed up with a fantastic local, Diane Isherwood, and the Wainuiomata Community Hub, to create a Wainuiomata Community Directory.

“Diane was really keen to do something like this for her work with Wainuiomata Toastmasters, so she came in to see me which was perfect timing as it’s something we’re passionate about doing and I was making a start on how to do it. I asked the Hub to come onboard and together we’re really excited to be connecting with locals about their amazing offerings, and can’t wait to get this out for

They are asking all groups, clubs and regular activities to share their details for the Directory and what is needed is key contact info, some brief info about who they are, what they offer, when and where

they are, and any additional info that’s helpful like whether it’s free or there’s a charge, if there’s a particular age group etc they’re focused on.

Diwali festival fireworks The Diwali fireworks display will light up the sky on Friday 13 November 2020, after strong winds postponed the finale event (and alternate weather day) during the official festival last weekend.

The fireworks, sponsored by Kāpura, are scheduled to go off at 9pm along the waterfront in the vicinity of the Queens Wharf and Shed 6 area – with the postponement date of Sunday 15 November.

Diwali festivals are held annually and known as the Festival of Lights, this ancient Hindu festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the renewal of life.

As per the Indian calendar, Puja Muhurat, the time for family prayers, is on Saturday 14 November.

Need help getting to sleep?

Recently I have been struggling with getting a full night’s sleep. So, after doing some research, I discovered these half-dozen key habits that have helped me, and suggest you try them too: 1. Stick to a sleeping schedule Set aside between seven and eight hours each night for sleeping, with regular start and finish times, even at weekends. If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes, then get up and do something relaxing.

2. Be careful what you eat and drink Avoid eating large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Also, be cautious with nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol.

3. Create a restful environment Exposure to light can make it harder to fall asleep. Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime. Then make your bedroom as quiet and dark as possible to help you drift off.

4. Limit daytime naps If you choose to nap, limit yourself to a maximum of 30 minutes, and

avoid doing so late in the day.

5. Include physical activity in your daily routine Regular physical activity can help to promote better sleep. But avoid being active too close to bedtime.

Getting fresh air every day may be helpful, too.

6. Manage worries Try to resolve worries or concerns before bedtime. Jot down what’s on your mind, and then set it aside for tomorrow. Stress management practices can also be of assistance.

Start with the basics such as getting organised, setting priorities, and delegating tasks.

Nearly everyone has the occasional sleepless night. But if it becomes a habit that’s hard to break, it might be time to consider seeking professional help or medication.

A Water Catchment Health day on Tuesday 10 November works with Wainuiomata students to help map environmental and stream health to inform the protection of regional ecosystems.

The day raises awareness for Te Oranga O Te Awa, a programme that engages youth in environmental care and protection, led by the Greater Wellington Regional Council in partnership with, Environmental Protection Authority, Zealandia and Wilderlab.

Greater Wellington’s Wainuiomata/ Orongorongo park ranger, Ricky Clarkson says, “This event gives children growing up in Wainuiomata the opportunity to learn about their water supply and the ecosystem surrounding it.

“Over the course of the day, our team will give students a guided tour of water treatment facilities, explain pest control operations and teach various water monitoring techniques.

“We want to introduce kids to environmental monitoring tools so they can build an appreciation of the wildlife in their backyard and understand how we can protect native species.

“The next step is getting students involved in the programme where they will collect green data by taking eDNA samples of local ecosystems,” adds Ricky.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is genetic material that is sourced from the environment and provides information of the comings and goings of animals and insects.

The Environmental Protection Authority’s Chief Scientist, Professor Michael Bunce says, “When animals move through their environment, they leave behind DNA. Like ‘genetic breadcrumbs’, we can use this unique DNA barcode to identify different species.

“This technology enables us to see what species are present in our envi-

ronment, particularly our waterways.

It helps us measure the health of a waterway.

“It’s a great way to connect people to a wider meaningful conversation about the protection of our waterways and environment. It also enhances awareness around the role of technology in environmental monitoring and protection,” adds Professor Bunce.

The programme kicks off in November and focuses on matauranga Maori environmental perspectives, the water cycle, groundwater and how to carry out a scientific monitoring programme.

This part of the project will be led

by Greater Wellington with support from Mountains to Sea Wellington, Enviroschools and local volunteers.

The eDNA samples collected by Wainuiomata students will be processed

by Wilderlab for DNA sequencing and will provide valuable long-term data of the changes in Wainuiomata’s urban stream health over time.

New Lower Hutt development Hutt City Council-owned property company Urban Plus Limited’s (UPL) new development - ‘Central Park on Copeland’ is nearing completion and new parents and first-home buyers Yang Gan and Julia Chu couldn’t be more excited.

“With house prices being quite high, we were being quite picky, but also realistic about what we could afford. Having grown up in the Hutt Valley I really wanted to stay here. So we started doing some research into new developments in Lower Hutt, including ones done

by UPL. When we saw ‘Central Park on Copeland’ we jumped at the opportunity to buy,” Yang says.

The new homes are in a mediumdensity development of 34 twostorey townhouses, due to be com-

pleted in the upcoming months.

Ten of the homes were released to market at $550,000, making home ownership a possibility to buyers who had previously been shut out of the property market.

League tournament By: Gerald Rillstone Damp and windy weather failed to deter the enthusiasm for the crowds of supporters who turned out to cheer on players in the Youth Pacific Nations Cup Rugby League Tournament held in Wainuiomata.

It was the first time the tournament was held in Wainuiomata with 30 plus teams competing across the ages from U10s through to U17s.

Among the spectators were NRL talent scouts and a radio station providing a live feed of the event which has the potential to become an annual national event, with great benefits to the community and local businesses greatly, and most of all our youth of Maori and Pasifika ethnicity.

Local under 10’s coach of Tamaiti o le Mauga (Children from the Mountain) Gene Solia-Gibb, says she was proud of the dedication her team showed in the slippery wet conditions.

“We lost the final to AWA, we played 4 games and AWA played only 3 - but our kids played it through with so much heart, thats what pulled them through to the end,” she says.

“The games were live streamed on Atiawa Toa with captain Falaniko Solia-Gibb (from Tamaiti o le Mauga) being named the Atiawa Toa Man of the Match.”

Gene says there is quite a story behind the name of the team.

“It was dedicated to the late Elizabeth Tanoai who had started this for the Men’s team a few years ago when they participated in the Men’s Pacific Cup and her vision along with Tipasa Tanoai (who is our leader) was for Wainuiomata to grow as a unit. Now its all about our tamaiti and we played in memory of her as she was a huge asset to Wainuiomata Rugby League and our Wainuiomata Samoan community. It was a vision that they have always wanted to see happen and with this Youth Pacific Cup was a huge success,” she says.

There was also 4 other teams from Tamaiti o le Mauga (Wainuiomata Samoans) U12s, u13s, u15 girls and u17s.

GARDENING THIS WEEK MINUTES WITH

Worst purchase is probably food that didn’t taste nice - Nutella Gelato has put me off Nutella for life because I had to eat the whole thing - there were no rubbish bins close by.  Favourite programme currently watching?

Documentaries on Netflix.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

I would flee to the islands of Samoa or Niue.

Keep eyes wide open when gardening: By Wally Richards Being a good spotter is half the battle in solving gardening problems. Gardeners that keep their eyes open as they go around their gardens can spot problems as they begin to happen.

One of the best times to do this is while you are hand watering plants with the hose using a watering wand; while the right hand is holding the wand, you can fold back leaves with your left hand and check for pests or problems.

Some problems are seasonal and come in cycles and the knowing of these cycles also makes you aware to be on the out look for them.

For instance psyllids on Photinia (Red Robin) if you were to spray the foliage with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with Raingard added two weekly about now for a couple of months then the grubs would not be able to enter the leaves and cause the distortions.

Aphids are also in season at the moment and they can be found on your roses and some other plants.

On the roses they will be around the new growths and the flower buds. If you just leave them, their populations will quickly build up and this will likely diminish the flowering display.

Aphids suck the sap of the plants and in doing so remove the plant’s energy resulting in poorer growth, twisted leaves and damaged flowers.

Aphids are not hard to kill and if you only have a few roses you may simply run your fingers over the pests and gently squash them without harming the plant.

For those with a lot of roses it is better to use a safe spray to knock them over such as Wallys Super Pyrethrum.

Use only late in the day just before dusk make up say 5 litres of spray using 2.5 mils of Super Pyrethrum, 25 mils of Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil and 50 mils of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

The Pyrethrum is a quick knock down that should kill off most of the aphids within a day. The Neem Tree Oil will aid in the control of any missed, or new aphids arriving for the next 7 odd days.

This natural oil will also aid in the reduction of diseases such as black spot, rust and mildews.

The reason for spraying near dusk is that Pyrethrum is quickly broken down

by UV, in fact within a couple of hours, if sprayed earlier in the day.

At dusk it is going to be active all night till the next day.

Now that your roses are coming into bud and flower start applying about a teaspoon of Fruit and Flower Power every 4 to 6 weeks. The potassium aids in flowering and the magnesium aids the deep green of the foliage.

In fact any other plants that are coming into flowering or setting fruit will do better with a small regular dose of these two minerals.

The curly leaves are the effects of the common disease, Curly Leaf and every leaf that is damaged means one less leaf for the tree to gain energy from the sun.

The damaged or curly leaves will later fall off the tree leaving only the leaves that are not affected.

Leaf loss means a smaller crop and maybe smaller fruit as well. You can offset some of the damage by spraying the good leaves with Vaporgard.

Vaporgard acts as a sun screen reducing the UV levels which affect the plantâ ™s ability to produce energy from the sun. One spray lasts for about 3 months on the foliage sprayed.

Within a couple of days of spraying you will notice the leaves turning to a rich dark green which means each leaf is working at full capacity, gaining energy.

Some gardeners like to spray Vaporgard onto the foliage of their roses to deepen the green colour and place a long term shine to the leaves. It also means your roses will be more vigorous and flower better.

One point to mention is that the film Vaporgard puts over the foliage makes it difficult for sprays such as Perkfection to enter the plant. To get around this add Raingard to the sprays.

Tomatoes will be doing well if in a sheltered, sunny spot. Those out in the open will be much slower to grow because of the weather and cold snaps.

I have kept my tomato plants in containers in the glasshouse, waiting for the weather to settle before starting to put them outdoors.

When I decide its time to put them out I will, a couple of days before hand, give them a spray all over with Vaporgard. This hardens the plants up and stops any transplant shock.

Tomatoes in containers must be given adequate water to prevent the compost from drying out, if not you will get blossom end rot which is that black patch on the bottom of the fruit.

Removing laterals on tomatoes can allow diseases to enter the plant, which will often result in losses.

There are two rules you must follow when removing laterals (side shoots) or leaves, do not do so when the air is moist (Humid) as moist air carries the disease spores.

Next; as soon as you remove a lateral, spray the damaged area with a squirt of Liquid Copper.

I am pleased to report that the suggestion of using the Cell Strengthening products that we have recommend for psyllids on tomatoes and potatoes and again last winter for garlic to assist in prevention of garlic rust.

It has worked this season as there is no sign of the rust on my garlic.

Unfortunately the only seed that I had available was not good quality so plants are not as good as they should be; but no rust.

Strawberries planted in winter should be doing well by now and if they are first year plants, still a bit on the small size, you should remove some of the early flowers so the plants can grow bigger before you let them fruit.

Spray the strawberry plants every 2 weeks or so with Mycorrcin.

This simple, natural spray feeds the beneficial microbes, which will not only keep the plants healthy but can increase your crop yield by 200 to 400%. I had one gardener ring me a couple of weeks ago and tell of his success last season.

He had two beds of strawberries, one he sprayed regularly with Mycorrcin, the other he didn’t.

The Mycorrcin treated bed produced masses of big, sweet strawberries where the other bed was just the normal so-so crop. He said if he had not done the trial with the two beds he would not have believed the possible difference.

The hot-seat just cooled off for Foster That’s the first big pass mark for Ian Foster and Sam Cane.

It’s hard to pick apart the All Blacks’ 43-5 win over the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday night.

Even the team’s harshest critics would have to give a quiet nod of approval at the performance which ensured the Bledisloe Cup would stay in New Zealand for the 18th consecutive year.

The victory margin is the biggest the men in black have ever had over the Wallabies in their 107-year rivalry and it showed major improvement from just two games ago when the teams drew the opening contest of the season in Wellington.

For those more sceptical fans, of which I would consider myself, the victory should instil confidence in coach Ian Foster and the play of captain Sam Cane.

There’s no denying the work rate of the open side flanker and his desire to maintain the long-held standards and traditions.

Questions can still be asked about his durability after he took another head knock late in the game which can’t be good for his brain or neck.

Richie Mo’unga certainly had his best game in the No 10 jersey at the international level.

He played the attacking, run-

oriented player he does for the Crusaders and he bullied the Wallabies’ debutante opposite him for 80 minutes and gave him a rugby lesson.

Mo’unga is a better version of Carlos Spencer.

He’s attacking, he challenges defences with his footwork and speed.

When he tries to be a distributor, the team suffers.

Anton Lienert-Brown showed why he is the best midfielder in New Zealand.

He is the perfect player following the international retirement of Ryan Crotty.

He is dependable, reliable and

gritty.

The Reiko Ioane experiment at 13 should also come to an end.

It is just not meant to be.

He’s not the first attempt to convert an outside back which has not worked out.

Leon MacDonald, Christian Cullen, Ben Smith and Isaia Toeava come racing to mind in that category.

Often the move is done because there is so much outside back talent in New Zealand rugby.

Tana Umaga successfully made the switch as he aged but he is the exception to the rule.

When the All Blacks win big, that is all that matters.

For a fanbase which always demands perfection, Saturday night was close enough.

It should make Ian Foster’s hot seat a little cooler.

As long as the wins keep coming, there cannot be too much frustration.

Youth has been a focus and it has thrived.

Hoskins Sotutu was more than adequate at No 8 in his first start while Caleb Clarke has been the breakout star of 2020.

It is not fashionable to be a content All Blacks fan but the fact they are trending in the right direction is undeniable three games into this new era.

Wainuiomata’s Whitaker defends title

By Andy McGechan A rare mistake on the track on Sunday means Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker has put himself in a difficult position in his bid to defend his national off-road title.

The 29-year-old father-of-one has the outright lead in the 2020 New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championship series after the third round of four was completed in Hawke’s Bay at the weekend, but there’s nothing certain about the KTM 300EXC rider being able to stay on top.

Whitaker now has to pin his hopes on another solid result at the series finale, preferably a win, if he is to keep hold of the trophy for a second term.

Riders will discard their worst result from the three North Island rounds of the series, therefore

making the South Island finale – the Nut Buster hard enduro at Oxford, near Christchurch, on November 14-15 – a must-do event, and so the title chase for the Gold Grade is very much in the balance.

Other riders could feature too, but essentially, if Whitaker wins the final round, he’ll successfully defend the title he won in 2019 and, if close rival Dylan Yearbury (Husqvarna TE300) wins at Oxford, then he will take the title.

Whitaker won the series opener near Porirua in early September and then finished runner-up to Cambridge’s Yearbury at round two near Whangamata two weeks later.

Whitaker admits these were not the results he was looking for, but he remains upbeat about his title prospects.

“There was nothing really that went wrong on Saturday. I just

simply wasn’t fast enough on the motocross section of the prologue,” said Whitaker.

“I was up front with Tom (Buxton) and Dylan (Yearbury) in Sunday’s enduro and quite comfortable with the pace, but then I make a rookie mistake. I was familiar with where the track was headed but I had brain fade and made a wrong turn and dropped into a ravine.

“I fell into a massive hole in the ground and went over the handlebars.

“Several Silver Grade riders stopped to help me out, but it had cost me about 15 minutes of track time. I was very lucky to be able to hold onto third overall for the day.

It was a pretty bad result and I was quite angry with myself.

“It’s a must-win for me in Christchurch now but I think I can do that.

Ella places at trials

By Gerald Rillstone Fresh back from the 2020 Marlborough Motorcycles New Zealand Trials Championship Wainuiomata’s Ella Burns competed well and placed 2nd after three days of challenging riding.

Also competing at the event was another rider from Wainuiomata 8-year-old Zack Furniss who also did well placing 3rd.

Both Ella and Zack competed in the Mini A Grade section for the event.

Before heading away Ella had been promised a Fitbit by her parents as a reward if she placed in the top three, Ella achieved the goal and did receive her Fitbit from mum and dad as promised for placing in the top 3.

Ella will now move to the adult sections to compete in the women and Junior grades and Zack will work on coming 1st next year.

Trial riding involves balance and technical skills to ride over natural or man made obstacles.

From road racing to MX, every champion trains on a trial bike to improve their ability on a motorbike.

From minis to veterans, there are bikes and classes for everyone thanks to its very low risk of injuries, due to the low speeds.

Motorcycling New Zealand trial commissioner Paul Jackson says the host of the event Pioneer Motorcycle Club put their vast experience to good use in setting three challenging courses over the weekend.
