Greater Wellington Councillor and Parks Portfolio Leader Prue Lamason officiated at the opening and acknowledged all the hard work of Wainuiomata and Orongorongo Park Ranger, Ricky Clarkson and Forest and Bird volunteer, Gary James.

She says the whole project came about because Forest and Bird were going to lose their facility in the city and a new site was needed.

Ranger Ricky came up with the perfect plan to enable the nursery to be built on land in the park among the area seeds are collected for the nursery.

“The work Forest and Bird are doing in collecting the seeds and raising the seeds is very special to this area, as the plants have started off life in this area.”

Prue paid a tribute to Ranger Ricky as the best forward thinker she has ever come across in coming up with a solution to the problem.

“It has been great to be able to help Forest and Bird out when they help us so much,” Prue says.

“Greater Wellington is grateful for all the work it does.”

Lower Hutt Forest and Bird chair Andy Mitchell says the nursery is a collaboration of both the Lower Hutt and Wellington branches of Forest

and Bird.

He also paid tribute to Wainuiomata dedicated and hard working volunteer Gary James.

Initially the nursery was to take over from the existing nursery in Wellington but the circumstances have change and this new nursery will be additional to the Wellington one Andy says.

“This is great because we are adding to the production of the number of plants that can be sourced locally and used not only for Forest and Bird but to other community groups for planting,” he says.

Chris Streatfield says he was more than happy to help with the building of the new nursery as he is manager of the Wellington Forest and Bird, Highbury nursery.

Chris says it was bitterly cold at times in the valley while he was constructing the buildings. It is a perfect spot to raise the plants once they have been seeded at the Wellington nursery.

“We aim to produce an annual amount of about ten to twelve thousand plants for distribution into the community and when we are full we have about thirty three thousand plants,” Chris says.

Part of the opening of the nursery also involved the planting of 300 trees on a nearby wetland.

Highlighting the reality of high density development Wainuiomata residents from Hyde Street, Best Street and Fitzherbert Road dragged their own bins to 26 and 28 Fitzherbert Road to illustrate a bin calamity in the making.

The aim was to highlight the safety and accessibility issue that 44 bins will create on collection day and with the bins positioned at the curb on a fine calm day there is potential for further problems if they are blown over.

Deputy chair of the Wainuiomata Community Board, Dawn McKinley says the

potential problems the bins will cause need to be addressed.

“I am concerned about the accessibility challenges for our elderly, disabled and parents with prams. Fitzherbert Road is a busy main road and the pavement at that section is quite narrow,” Dawn says. “ I would love to see a suitable solution which could be implemented at other developments in Lower Hutt as this will not be the only street affected.”

One resident has suggested there needs to be a plan for high density block bins included in council planning for the bin roll out suggesting alternative arrangements like communal bins and recycling areas.

inbrief news Petone Library mould Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller has temporarily closed the Hardwick Smith Lounge in Belmont and the first floor of the Petone Library building due to the health and safety risk to staff and users from toxic mould.

The Petone Library remains open, with additional health and safety measures in place.

A mid-week inspection of both facilities found toxic mould and high moisture levels and a decision was made to close them immediately, as a precautionary measure while further inspections are undertaken.

Petone Library and other staff have been informed.

The library ground floor has been checked and is considered safe for staff and the community to continue to occupy.

The technical advice received is that anybody concerned about their health because of potential toxic mould exposure should see a medical professional.

Hutt nurse recognised for concussion research Hutt clinical nurse specialist and concussion expert Doug King has been recognised in the top 0.5 percent of experts worldwide on brain concussion and football codes by Expertscape— placing him third internationally for his research.

Doug works as a clinical nurse specialist in Hutt Hospital’s Emergency Department, and has spent over 20 years researching sports-related concussion and head impact biomechanics. His research informs practices and guidelines across New Zealand

and internationally.

“Concussion and traumatic brain injury is a silent epidemic—I have spent many years researching the impacts of concussion in sport and understanding how findings can be applied across broader contexts,” Doug says.

“We know that the impact of a head injury is accumulative and that every concussion should be viewed based on an individual’s history and risk factors.”

Doug has recently completed his latest PHD research on injury

epidemiology in women’s rugby union in New Zealand, where he found that women take longer to recover from concussion than males, and experience more concussion symptoms over a longer duration.

He found that on average, females took 30 days longer to recover, whereas males recovered sooner—leading to a shift in thinking on recovery time and graduated return to activity.

His findings reinforce previous research undertaken internationally and highlights the

need for a change in guidelines, both in sport, and in the wider management and monitoring of concussion.

“While my findings have been obtained through a study of women’s rugby, the results clearly show that we need to change the way we view and treat concussion, across all contexts— particularly for females.

“There needs to be flexibility in the guidelines we use and recognition that no head injury is the same.”

The Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHB region is continuing to rapidly scale up its COVID-19 vaccination programme to make it as easy as possible for more people to be vaccinated in the way that best suits them.

This includes offering a range of vaccination options, including Community Vaccination Centres, Māori providers, general practices, community pharmacies, and pop-up events for Pacific and Disabled communities.

In the past fortnight 21 new clinics have opened across the region through general practice and pharmacy, taking the total number of active clinics to 34. In the coming weeks more clinics will open.

If it is anything like the petrol investigation not a lot will change.

I am hopeful that we will see some controls put on because wages are not keeping up.

Protect against measles in Wainuiomata.

Wainuiomata News Dear Editor, Last week’s Wainuiomata News included a letter to the editor from Pete McCoy who argued that Council should prioritse investing in our water infrastructure instead of funding the new Wainuiomata Streetscape on Queen Street.

I can assure readers that investing in our core infrastructure is front and centre of Council’s plans. Over the next ten years, we’re investing $587 million into our water pipes, $406+ million into transport projects, and $88 million into important community infrastructure

projects including Naenae Pool.

But we cannot also ignore vital community infrastructure which makes our city such a special place to live.

Wainuiomata is growing, and in the heart of the suburb there’s been a whole heap of investment that’s recently gone into the area.

Countdown has opened a brand new supermarket, the mall is being redeveloped, the Masonic Village is moving along nicely, and we have the best dog park in the region just down the road.

We have an opportunity to capitalise on these projects by improving the

civic heart of Wainuiomata to complement what’s happening in and around the suburb.

That’s why we’re investing $8.5 million into rejuvenating Queen Street and creating a better space for our communities to come together and thrive.

Rest assured, investing in Queen Street will not come at the expense of basic infrastructure and services. We have to get the basics right.

But I think it’s also time that Wainuiomata gets the upgrade it deserves.

It took a day or two longer than Clive was predicting but the winner of the two millionth prescription prize is Wainuiomata’s Sue Bridge.

Sue came in right at the end of the day on Tuesday not feeling too good,” Clive says.

“We dispensed her prescription which lucky for her was number 2,000,000 and she has won a weekend for two at Solway Park in Masterton and she is definitely feeling better now.”

With over two decades of dispensing in Wainuiomata Clive the Chemist hit the 2 million mark last Tuesday just as the Wainuiomata News was going to print.

Sue can now celebrate her surprise win with a free weekend away with vouchers for expenses.

Every prescription has a number and is recorded in the system and Clive was keeping an eye on it as the milestone drew nearer.

Clive says part of what has helped reach the 2 million mark is the community and the great support they give which is why he wants to give something back.

Exhibition a tribute By: Gerald Rillstone A recent sculpture exhibition held at the Wainuiomata HUB that was aimed at attracting new members to the Wainuiomata Sculptors group, which was until recently part of the Point Howard Arts Society, turned into a tribute to one of the groups well liked and missed members, Davina Roberts who died last year.

Putting on the exhibition was former treasurer of the group Louise Black.

Louise says she offered to set it up because they needed new members.

“When I started to put the display together I realized I was giving something back to Davina Roberts who passed away last year it was like a last tribute,” Louise says.

“The beauty that I saw on the board was the beauty in all of us. And the beauty of the talent in the sculpture a reflection of this.”

Louise says the support she received from the Wainuiomata HUB was a huge help to putting on the exhibition.

Since the exhibition was put on it has been decided to close down the Point Howard Arts Society.

Busker’s amp at Wellington Museum Kenny’s amplifier was officially handed over to the Wellington Museum today, to house the item that made the local identity a household name.

The 10-year anniversary of the death of busker John D’Estaing Adams aka Kenny has set the wheels in motion for this commemoration of the Wellington icon.

Born in Texas in 1946, the actor, singer and musician, moved to Wellington in 1992

to fulfil his commitment to missionary work.

But he was better known as an entertainer in Courtenay Place and his resemblance to Country singer Kenny Rogers – and with his stoush with then Mayor, Mark Blumsky, and the removal of his amplifier due to noise complaints.

Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons recently revived an idea for a memorial to Kenny, to recognise the colourful character that he was.

Moths and Fruit : By Wally Richards There are two moths in New Zealand that attack fruit namely, Codlin Moth which have apples, pears and walnuts as their host fruit.

Guava Moth which has all fruit and nuts as their host.

The Codlin Moth is seasonal active while there is fruit on their host plants but the Guava Moth is all year around going from one host tree to another.

Both are relatively easy to control so that you can obtain a reasonable amount of your crop as long as you follow my proven advice.

Firstly let us understand how these two pests operate.

Being moths they only fly at night and they find their host tree by the smell of the forming and ripening fruit.

So if they cannot smell your tree/fruit they will fly on by to a tree they can smell.

This is the first step in reducing the damage to your fruit by disguising the smell of the tree/fruit.

To do this you need an overriding smell that negates the smell of the tree.

Years ago to this end some gardeners would plant marigolds under their fruit trees because of their high aroma.

To take this a step further some hanging baskets of marigolds would be hung at the 4 cardinal points of the tree about head high.

These days we use instead, Wallys Neem Tree Granules scattered on the ground underneath the tree from the trunk to the drip line.

Then by making some little bags out of curtain netting we hang more of Wa llys Neem Tree Granules in the tree on the lower branches about head high at the four cardinal points.

(In case you do not know that is North, South, East and West) Neem Granules are not all equal and the amount of smell is related to the

amount of Neem Oil that is still in the granules.

Very dark Neem granules have lots of oil and will work well.

L i g ht c olou re d brownish means that in India the granules (kernels) have been cold pressed so many times to get the most oil out of them that they are about useless for smell and pest control.

In India it is called Neem Cake and the cake that still has a lot of oil after the first cold press and is the most expensive but the one that works best in your garden.

So we use the Wallys Neem Tree Granules as described after flowering and when the fruit has formed to a reasonable size.

One application then is all that is needed for each crop to disguise the fruit as the granules last over 3 months slowly breaking down..

Another one that can be used is Wallys Cat Repellent which is Naphthalene flakes that smell like the old moth balls.

The problem with the flakes is they wash out with rain but will last a long time if kept dry.

A little house hanging in the tree with its sides open and a roof to prevent the f lakes from getting wet would be suitable.

I have also thought a 2 litre plastic coke bottle with a hole drilled into the bottom and a string or wire threaded through the hole and the open cap end,hanging horizontal on a branch with flakes inside would also work.

The next step in control is to prevent any grubs that hatch out near your fruit from eating their way into the fruit.

Once a grub enters the fruit you have lost the battle cause even if you use a poisonous systemic insecticide to kill it? Whats

the point its going to die inside the fruit and be useless.

No you need a non toxic substance on the outside of the fruit that is going to prevent the grub from eating its way in.

Wallys Super Neem Tree oil with Raingard is the perfect answer.

You spray the fruit, not the tree so there is a coating of Wallys Neem Tree Oil on the skin of the fruit protected from washing off in rain with Wallys Raingard (lasts for 14 days before reapplying.)

The Neem Oil is an antifeedent which means when the young grub takes its first bite it will get some Neem Oil in its gut and will never eat again starving to death fairly quickly been so young.

On your mature fruit you will have a little pin pricked scar that where it took its one and only bite.

So all you do is just spray the maturing fruit every 14 days that are relatively easy to reach and spray.

Fr uit t hat a re more difficult to spray will likely be eaten by birds later on anyway and as long as you are getting a nice amount of fruit to harvest that is all that really matters.

Then there is also another way to cont rol mot h problem by which you set up a moth lure to attract them and kill them.

Take one litre of hot water add a100 grams of sugar, one teaspoon of marmite,

half a tablespoon of Cloudy Ammonia a nd ha lf a tablespoon of Vanillia: Mix well and divide the mix between two plastic milk or soft drink bottles.

Punch some holes in the side of the bottles just above the level of the mix.

Place on a stand about a couple of metres away from the tree. At about waist height like on a small folding table.

When a number of moths are caught dispose of them and make up a new solution.

Cloudy Ammonia used to be common once apon a time from a grocery store if not so easy to find try hardware stores, there are two chains in NZ and they may have.

I f you do a l l t h ree procedures for control or at least the first two then you should be able to once again en joy your own fruit.

The Codlin Moth traps are useful as if you monitor them they trap the male codlin moths which tells you it is the time to start using the Wally Super Neem Tree Oil spray on your apples etc.

If after a month you find no new male moths in the trap you can stop spraying as it is all over for the season. (That is unless you have Guava moths in your region) Guava moth pheromone traps are a waste of time because they are all year round so there is no time to start or stop control sprays as with the Codlin Moth.

A novel device designed by researchers at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) to test the eyesight of pre-schoolers has been awarded $1.2 million.

The technology has been developed over a period of ten years by Dr Turuwhenua and his team to detect ‘lazy eye’ or amblyopia, which if left untreated can affect a person’s vision for life.

The test is designed to make the testing of visual acuity – clarity of or sharpness of vision - easier to measure and more accessible than it is at present.

Dr Turuwhenua’s technology solves this problem by identifying instead how a child’s eyes involuntarily respond to carefully designed patterns on a short video featuring moving and different sized dots.

Farewell Kenneth Arthur Salmon

Former president of Wainuiomata Grey Power and RSA member Kenneth Salmon who died in July was given a fond farewell by members of both organisations.

As part of the protocol the RSA formally announced the service details of the deceased as recognition of his membership.

Kenneth Arthur Salmon was born 23rd November 1929 on the Isle of Wight UK and passed 26th June 2021 in Lower Hutt.

Service Number NZ 38179 & UK 2549378.

He started his service life as a boy soldier and followed that with service to both the British and NZ Army as part of REME. (Registered electrical maintenance engineering Group) He also served in the Mau-Mau uprising in Kenya (1952- 60) his rank on retirement WOI. Ken was a respected member of the association and community. He enjoyed the company and companionship of many club members and could discuss the many topics that came up.

These tributes were given at the Memorial Service held for Ken at the Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 10 July 2021.

Wainuiomata Garden Club has hosted the show every year for 50 years and with no COVID restrictions on the horizon the whole community can get involved in this years September exhibition.

Organiser Joyce Lockyer says everyone in the valley is encouraged to enter.

“Entrants may enter as many times and in as many categories as they wish and need only one particular flower that they are proud of or one handcraft item which they have spent many months creating,” Joyce says.

“Likewise we have specialty categories for children and these are divided into age groups so they are very fair to all” There is a small entry fee per item for t he a du lt se ct ion but ent r y is free for all children participating.

“We have many trophies to be presented every year and these have been used for the entire time the Show has been held with the majority of them originally donated by long time identities of the community and are in fact a valuable history of the Show.”

“There are even Aggregate cups available for presentation to the local Scout, Girl Guide, Brownies, and Girls Brigade packs who enter,” Joyce says.

The Show is to be held on SEPTEMBER 5th at the Wainuiomata Primary School Hall.

Entries accepted from 9am till 11am and the hall is open to entrants and the general public from 2pm for viewing and presentation of trophies.

Beef and red wine casserole Ingredients:

Method:

s 1 kilogram beef chuck steak (see recipe tip), trimmed, cubed s 1/4 cup seasoned flour s 1/4 cup olive oil s 2 carrots, trimmed, chopped s 2 celery stalks, chopped s 1 onion, chopped s 2 garlic cloves, crushed s 4 cup campbell’s real beef stock s 400 gram can diced tomatoes s 3/4 cup red wine s 4 thyme sprigs, plus extra to serve s 2 fresh bay leaves

1. Preheat oven to moderate, 180°C. Toss meat in seasoned flour, shaking off excess.

2. In a large casserole dish, heat 2 tablespoons oil on high. Brown meat in 3 batches for 3-4 minutes each.

Transfer to a plate.

3. In the same pan, heat remaining oil on medium.

Sauté carrot, celery, onion and garlic for 3-4 minutes.

4. Return meat to pan with stock, tomatoes and wine.

Add thyme and bay leaves, then season. Bring to the boil, stirring.

5. Bake, covered, for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for a further 30 minutes until meat is very tender. Top casserole with extra thyme and serve with mash.

Hippos spend pretty much their whole lives in water, so it really doesn’t sound right when you hear that they actually cannot swim. It is true though, the main reason they spend so much time in the water is mainly to protect their extremely sensitive skin from the harsh African sun.

Cars most commonly stolen Police are warning car owners, particularly those with a Mazda Demio or Nissan Tiida, to have security measures in place.

Mastermind Bond pulls off Olympic coup Hamish Bond looked like a proud father as he stood alongside his younger men’s eight gold medalists.

Bond had just made his vision of putting New Zealand back on the map when it came to rowing’s blue riband event, a reality for the first time since 1972.

At the same time, he etched his name as one of this country’s best Olympians with his third gold medal in as many campaigns.

Bond is an understated athlete,

who is quite unassuming and probably well suited to the laidback feel of rowing as a sport in the country.

Even when he dominated the men’s pair for two Olympic cycles with Eric Murray, he was happy to play the sidekick role in the public eye to the more charismatic Murray.

Today, he stepped out of whatever shadow he may have been in.

Ironically, my biggest interaction with him was when he was

competing in a road cycling event in Nelson after the Rio 2016 campaign.

He beat Tour de France cyclist George Bennett that day (Bennett was starting his season and was short of race fitness) but it was impressive.

In speaking to him after the race, he came across to me as a reluctant star of the show.

He knew why the media was interested in him, he got it, but he was unphased by it all.

He was polite and honest but far from chatty.

After the heroics of Friday, Bond had the look of a man whose grand plan had come together perfectly.

He seemed like a proud Cheshire Cat with a bowl of cream, lapping up the attention while also remaining down to earth.

People talk of the 1972 eight as one of the best moments in our sport’s history.

The 2021 effort was equally

stunning and will also be talked about for decades to come.

Post-race Bond expressed how winning the eight was what had motivated him and what he wanted.

His vision has pulled off a moment for the ages.

One has to wonder if Blenheim’s Tom Murray, who was part of the boat, realises that this achievement will live on long after his lifetime.

The importance of Rippa Rugby

New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) introduction of Rippa Rugby in 2003 has been a Godsend for tamariki and parents across Aotearoa.

This version of rugby union has provided children with the chance to play the game they love whilst giving the parents peace of mind regarding their safety. At a time where head knocks and concussions at all levels of the game have become commonplace, rippa rugby plays a crucial role in the club rugby structure.

NZR Participation Development Manager, Mike Hester, said NZR wants players to have a lifelong love of rugby, and part of that is ensuring there are options and alternative forms of the game available at all levels: “The safety of all players in our game is paramount, which is why we are expanding our offering, including Rippa Rugby for our tamariki, Rip Rugby for rangatahi, and weight-restricted rugby offerings at secondary and senior level.”

The Wainuiomata Junior Rugby Club has five teams playing in the Rippa grades this season. The club’s U-8/9s team named Nga tahi (in unison), coached by parent Chloe Bryan is enjoying a successful season with many of the team new to the game.

Bryan explains, “Our tamariki are learning and improving with every game. The Rippa grade is a great competition where the kids can just run without fear of getting hurt.

It’s the perfect starting point for those who want to progress to the tackle grades.” Bryan plans to take Nga tahi through another season of Rippa and then onto the tackle grade in 2023.

Bryan and the team, which celebrated another “W” last week, acknowledge the fantastic support from the local legal fraternity including Reids Family Law, lawyers Louise Sziranyi and Toli Sagaga; and local businesses Wainui Dental and Wainui Joinery Chloe Bryan is enjoying a successful season with many of the team new to the game.

Halfbaked win to close gap on title chase

By Ryan Imray The Reserves kept their spot at the top of the table despite losing their game. After pulling the game back to 2-2 late on, a world class finish for the visitors was the difference between the sides.

Halfbaked walked away 2-0 winners which takes the title race to an extra week. A man of the match performance from stand in goalkeeper Scott Addley ensured that goals from Cullum Waugh and Alvin Naidu were enough to secure all 3 points. The Fiddick’s did what they do best and walked away with the 3 points in a high scoring game. A triple hat-trick to Andrew Olivier, Adam Faulkner

and Sean Collins helped the side to an outstanding 10-1 win.

The Roundballs travelled out to Porirua to face Tawa and they walked away with a point in a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Callum Mackaness and Tyler Titov-Smith’s 20th goal of the season. The Undertakers had a tough day at the office as they fell to a 5-0 defeat out at Karori Park.

Pasifika managed to score 3 goals away to Karori but ultimately paid the price for some lacklustre defending as they conceded 5 goals. Pasifica Originals left it late but managed to walk away with a point in a 1-1 draw to Island Bay. The OC’s put a shift in against North Wellington but unfortu-

nately lost 1-0 as the visitors won it late on thanks to a 30-yard strike that gave goalkeeper Ray Boyd no chance.

Sunday’s games started with the Under 17’s travelling out to Porirua looking to back up last weeks performance. Despite sickness, injuries and having to change the goalkeeper twice, the boys were clinical in front of goal to win 6-3. The Women hosted Kapiti in the Quarter Final of the Executive Plate and they got off to the perfect start. Heather Smith put the hosts in front in the 3rd minute before getting her second just before half time to put the ladies 2-0 in front at half time. The visitors came out

firing in the second half and sadly ended Wainui’s season with 3 second half goals to walk away 3-2 winners.
