Karori’s Pirates Swim Team ended Capital Swim Club’s 25-year stranglehold on the Wellington Short Course Championships over the weekend.

The club took 60 swimmers to the two-day meeting at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre in Paraparaumu with 90 percent of Pirates swimmers achieving a personal best time to go with their large medal haul.

Pirates take top spot in capital swimming Continued from page 1.

Pirates head coach Steve Francis says it was a phenomenal weekend.

“It’s been building for a long time,” he says.

“It felt good but we have New Zealand Short Course Nationals in two weeks and that’s the challenge is to get these swimmers who raced so fast, to continue it forward and grow five to 10 percent for what is a more important meet for the club.”

Steve says the arrival of Andre Kudaba from Capital along with some of his swimmers had created “training tension” within the squad which had turned into a positive motivator for all involved with the Karori-club.

“Having Andre’s crew join us has created some buzz and excitement within the squad.

“The energy and intensity is up as we are training so we are seeing dividends early in what is a new collaboration.

Steve also praised assistant coach Liam Neal who has also been a big part of the club’s growth and success.

Steve praised Capital for their long tenure of success and he expected them to be back.

“They’ve had sustained success and we certainly don’t want to puff our chests out too much on one result,” he says.

“I look forward to battling them going forward because that’s what makes swimmers go faster.” Steve says seeing swimmers make personal bests is always a great feeling.

“Anytime swimmers do a PB to make a final or snatch a medal from a side lane is always great to see.”

Steve has been the head coach at Pirates for the past 15 years.

He says he is unsure if the Olympics will see a rush of new swimmers but he said seeing the sport on television is always a positive.

“Getting two finalists is great,” he says.

“We need heroes that people can look up to.

“Yes, it’s great to have it front and centre.”

Steve helped Olympian Lewis Clareburt in his early days and he hoped he could make more of an impact in three years time at the Paris Olympics.

Newlands’ Pukehuia Park officially opened The newly upgraded Pukehuia Park was officially opened on Saturday with a pre-dawn blessing and ceremony.

The upgrade at Pukehuia Park, formally Newlands Park, has been underway since 2019, with numerous consultations with the community for input on the plan and design.

Construction work started on the $3.6 million upgrade in 2020 and after much anticipation is soon going to be open for the community to enjoy.

The upgrade, part funded by a $1.54 million grant from Plimmer Bequest, features: Two new play areas, one for toddlers and younger children and another for older kids An all-weather artificial surface for informal sports

The name Pukehuia translates as ‘hill of the huia bird’, a bird which was once prolific in the area but is now sadly extinct.

It was put forward by NgƗ Hau e WhƗ o PaparƗrangi, kaitiaki of the whare on Ladbrooke Drive,

during consultation period for the redevelopment. Councillors voted for the park to be renamed in February 2020. The huia bird has been incorporated in some design aspects of the park and in the on-site signage.

Primary school teachers recently jumped on bikes to upskill and advocate for safe active travel among students and the wider community, through a partnership with Greater Wellington, the Bike On New Zealand Charitable Trust, Waka Kotahi, and local and regional councils.

Around 40 schools and communities in the Wellington region have implemented their own Bikes in Schools project.

TIPS Jo Cameron installed as President of Karori Lions NEWS Send your tips to Jo Cameron became the first member of the Karori Lions Club to be installed as President for the third time.

A very convivial dinner was enjoyed by a good turnout of Karori Lions and guests from several other clubs at the Karori Park Café last Wednesday evening, with Lions District Governor Simon Williams officiating at the annual Change of Officers.

Jo joined Karori Lions 22 years ago, and in that time progressed up the ranks through the role of Club President, to Zone Chairman, to District Governor and finally to Council Chairman – the head Lion in New Zealand – during the Lions’ year 2011/12.

The previous year Jo had to miss her in-person installation

as District Governor at the Lions International Convention 2010 in Sydney, as she had just given birth to her daughter, Vanessa, a unique situation in the previously male-dominated Lions’ world. Jo became an international celebrity as a District Governor with a baby daughter.

In her acceptance speech on Wednesday evening, Jo spoke about the importance of enthusiasm, the need for authenticity, and how those attributes would inspire others. Club Secretary Beth Anders passion and drive was admired.

“Jo has been a role model for many in Lions, never failing to put her hand up to get things done, in Lions’ quest to provide help for others and services to the

community.”

Karori Lions have been serving their community for 52 years, providing funding and other assistance to health, youth, environment, humanitarian relief and community projects.

During the past year the Lions Club of Karori has contributed over $25,000 towards the wider Lions initiative of raising $500,000 for the “Playscape” therapeutic play and education area at the new Wellington Children’s Hospital.

Jo has been an integral part of the fundraising team, including arranging a US$100,000 contribution from Lions Clubs International Foundation – the charitable wing of Lions Clubs International, based in Chicago, USA.

Karori Youth Awards to celebrate community involvement

A room packed with nearly 100 science exhibits at Wadestown School was the culmination of Kowhai students who spent several weeks preparing, investigating, researching and analysing an array of scientific investigations.

Judging day saw a group of 13 senior secondary students, from high schools in the region, with a passion for science volunteering their time to assist with the judging and give back to the next generation of learners.

Acting deputy principal Cathrine Wilkinson says the project was compulsory for all year 7 and 8 students.

“We often have parents come in and mark the exhibits but this year we thought we would make a link with the

colleges and we got year 13 scientists from St Pats, Wellington High, Wellington College and Wellington Girls,” Cathrine says.

“We told the students not to choose a subject that is going to win you a prize but choose a subject that you are passionate about and go with it and we teach them all about the scientific method and they go away and do it and show us what they have learned.”

Cathrine says putting on the Science Fair wouldn't have been possible without the help of Wadestown School parent Pete McLellan.

“We have what is called the Green Team and Pete has a passion for science and he has been the key coordinator for this whole thing and we couldn't have done it without him,” Cathirne says.

The 23rd Karori Youth Awards will highlight some of the hardest working community-minded people in the suburb.

After being an online event last year, due to Covid-19, the event will be back to a singlenight ceremony on September 13 at the Karori Baptist Church.

Event organiser and youth worker at the Karori Youth Centre, Alex Powell says the event aims to recognise young people making positive contributions in the community.

“It’s an event to connect the community and raise awareness of how young people are contributing in their community,” she says.

“We are building up the nominations and have another

couple of weeks to go and we have a few new organisations who have come up with nominations,” she says.

“We have an emphasis on contributing to the community.

“We also want to recognise people who may nor necessarily get accolades like this but are still deserving.”.

The awards celebrate those serving, leading, supporting others or overcoming adversity in a significant way.

This can be on-going or through a project or situation.

Awards range from service to community, sport and arts as well as academic improvement, team work, overcoming adversity and contribution to young people amongst others.

People can be nominated at youth@karoricommunitycentre.org.nz

Karori Cemetery is New Zealand’s second largest burial ground, is the final resting place for over 83,000 people, and is still drop dead gorgeous as it turns 130 years old this month.

The Wellington City Council owned cemetery was established in 1891 to replace the then overcrowded Bolton Street Cemetery, and by 1965 it too reached capacity, with Makara Cemetery becoming the city’s new main cemetery.

Since 2013, local resident and historian Barbara Mulligan has been giving guided tours of the cemetery and says there is always high demand for the monthly events – and special one-off events like the Suffrage Day tour.

“Karori Cemetery is a repository of so much history and heritage, it’s full of stories and lives lived, there’s also the natural beauty of the place with the birds, trees, peace and quiet – yet it’s packed full of intrigue and fascination.

“There are six Prime Ministers there, a lot of Mayors, artists, musicians, nation builders, the executed, and the murdered, and at least 720 of those who succumbed to influenza in Wellington in 1918 were buried at Karori Cemetery.

“We also do a tour about Heroines and Housewives, as they’re sometimes overlooked.

It’s often harder to find the stories of women when we do our research – but they’re equally interesting and relevant.”

A new-born called Freddie Fish was the first burial at the site, and to honour the memory of all the children at the cemetery, tour funds will go to a local children’s charity.

“At a sad time 130 years ago we hope the parents of Freddie would have had wKƗnau and community support. As kindness and community support is still important in 2021, the Friends of Karori Cemetery will donate any tour funds received on Sunday 1 August to Bellyful Karori,” adds Barbara.

The only plots available now at Karori Cemetery are pre-purchased ash or family plots, and children’s plots.

Karori Cemetery facts and figures: 1890 – Karori wins the ballot for the site

of a much needed and new cemetery for Wellington. McKenzie Brothers agree in principle to accept the Council’s offer for their land. The Council raises loan of £7500 for the new cemetery.

1891 – Karori Cemetery was established to replace the already full Bolton Street Cemetery.

3 August 1891 – first interment was a monthold baby named Frederick William Fish.

February 1892 – first regular burials take place and Sexton E.A Nash is appointed.

1909 – Karori Cemetery Crematorium was the first Crematorium in New Zealand and is the oldest in Australasia. The Crematorium was designed by John Sydney Swan and the cremator was coke-fired. It carries out about 450 cremations a year.

The Small Chapel at Karori Cemetery was designed by William Hobbard. The chapel has six world class stained windows. Five were designed and built in the An Tur Gloine (Tower of Glass) factory in Dublin and were made over a 25 year period.

1918 – the Services Section of Karori Cemetery was established to honour those who have served in Wars. Wellington City Council was the first in New Zealand to establish a Services Section.

Karori Cemetery has over 86,635 interments.

Karori Crematorium has provided over 75,305 cremations since its first operation.

The Wellington City Council/Karori Cemetery signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Friends of Karori on the 15 June 2020.

Karori is an archaeological site, significant for its heritage and ecological value.

Karori has 24 distinctive vaults.

Karori Cemetery has two self-guided trails, The Warriors Walk and the SS Penguin Shipwreck with brochures available online.

For casket interments at Karori, plots are hand dug and can take approximately two days depending on depth.

Wellington City Council has a field team of six staff who look after Karori and Makara Cemetery.

Pedestrian injured in Tawa A pedestrian was injured after being struck by a car on Main Road in Tawa at 8.40am on Tuesday. .

The pedestrian was crossing Main Road just north of Victory Crescent.

The car, believed to be a gold-coloured Daihatsu Charade, did not stop following the incident and continued driving northbound.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital with moderate injuries.

Police would like to hear from any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who was in the area at the time who may have dashcam footage showing the car involved.

Voix de Femmes mid-winter Christmas Voix de Femmes’ mid-year concert on 22 August is entitled Tranquillité, depicting the sense of calm we gain from outer peace and quiet, rather than the serenity of inner peace of mind.

The NZSO presents night of Mozart at Wellington College The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform two of Mozart’s most beloved serenades in the intimate setting of Wellington College on August 28.

The concert Mozart Serenity features the great composer’s Serenade No. 12 Nachtmusik and Serenade No. 7 Haffner.

While serenades were usually

considered light pieces of music in 18th century Vienna, Mozart broke new ground with serenades that were darker in tone and with more depth.

Haffner, first performed in 1776, was one of Mozart’s breakout works, signifying the composer’s transition from a young prodigy to, at just 20 years of age, a fully fledged composer in

his own right.

The intricate detail and contrasting styles in Nachtmusik, written about six years after Haffner, continue to make it a popular piece performed by wind ensembles to this day.

Mozart Serenity, directed by NZSO Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen, follows a sold-out and critically acclaimed NZSO

performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and tango legend Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires at Wellington College’s Alan Gibbs Centre in May. All NZSO public performances at the centre are part of a new partnership this year between the NZSO and Wellington College.

ing at the Alan Gibbs Centre, NZSO players have led workshops and coaching sessions with students from Wellington College, St Mark’s School and Kelburn Normal School.

Warning of rise in tool thefts - police Wellington Police are warning tradies to take extra care to avoid becoming a victim of tool theft.

Over the past week there have been 12 thefts reported to Police, specifically targeting tradesperson work vehicles.

Over $100,000 worth of tools have been taken from utes and vans, which have also been damaged in the process, and the thefts are predominantly occurring overnight in the Wellington CBD. Power tools are being targeted, in particular Milwaukee and Makita branded tools, but these opportunistic thieves are also targeting

marked business vehicles and vehicles which have the appearance of a tradesperson’s vehicle before checking what tools are present.

It’s really important that people remember to lock up their tools securely when they’re not being used and, if possible, to not leave them in their vehicles for extended periods of time, and to remove them from their vehicles overnight.

This can be a hassle when you’ve had a long day at work and you’re tired, but tools left in vehicles are easy pickings for opportunistic thieves.

It’s far better to spend an extra five minutes at the end of the day securing your tools than to wake up in the morning to find them stolen.

In addition to securing your tools, Police recommend people record the serial numbers of their tools, using the website https:// www.snap.org.nz, or take photos and store them electronically. It is also useful to mark tools by engraving initials into small spaces or hidden gaps. Products like SelectaDNA that invisibly mark and identify your tools can also be utilized.

Following these approaches can enable Police to positively identify and return stolen tools, as well as increasing the likelihood of the offender being charged.

Police urges anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity to call Police on 111 immediately. If anyone has information relating to thefts of this nature or knows of someone who has recently acquired tools they believe aren’t legally theirs, they can contact Police on 105 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting the file number: 210730/2765.

Meat trays meet their match with new optical sorter Wellington’s recycling facility is now the proud owner of an optical sorter, capable of diverting over seven million meat and other clear plastic trays from the region’s landfills and overseas processors each year.

Where the naked eye couldn’t determine the difference between unrecyclable PVC and the recyclable PET meat trays, the optical sorter can identify and separate these items automatically.

The technology means approximately 27,000 clear PET items will be sorted every day and sent to Flight Plastics in Seaview to be recycled into other products.

Approximately 70 percent of meat trays are PET grade, but PVC trays can contaminate the product and cause issues with the machinery.

Last year’s Colmar Brunton WasteMINZ survey showed 93 percent of Wellingtonians recycle, and 87% believe it’s worth taking the time to recycle right, higher than the national average notes Mayor Andy Foster.

“The addition of this sorter will make identifying contamination such as PVC trays easier and ensure the processing of items is even more efficient and thorough.

“It will also allow the facility owner, Oji Fibre Solutions, to improve the quality of end products on-sold for

recycling – while around 90% of Wellington’s kerbside recycling is already recycled in New Zealand, the optical sorter will increase this percentage .

“Having said this, we could all do more to reduce our recycling and waste, and we’re very supportive of the Government’s plans to phase out many single-use plastic products over the next few years.”

Councillor Laurie Foon agrees, and says while the addition of the optical sorter is good news, reducing our waste footprint would be much better.

“We need to be more conscious about everything we buy and resist easy single-use options.

“Convenience is part of the reason we generate so much waste in the first place – but taking your own container to the deli or butcher to get your fish or meat is an easy replacement for meat trays.”

More than 135 tonnes of materials arrive at the Oji Fibre Solutions plant in Seaview each day from residential kerbside collections around the Wellington region – with 40 tonnes from the Wellington city alone.

Oji’s Sean Somerville, who oversees the Seaview plant, says the optical sorter was co-funded through the Waste Minimisation Fund and Oji Fibre Solutions.

Filipino culture celebrated in Churton Park

We associate Filipino Kiwis as a frontline face of our health care system, whether as nurses, doctors or other carers, but what do we know about the Philippines?

Last week, the Philippines Ambassador Gary Domingo and members of the Hiyas NZ Filipino community shared their pride in their heritage.

The event was part of the continuing ‘We Are One’ series, held at the Churton Park Community Centre and supported by the Multicultural Council of Wellington and the Wellington City Council.

This evening was also sponsored by Hyas NZ.

The room was almost filled to capacity, including guests: Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor, Malaysian High Commissioner Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo and City Councillor Malcolm Sparrow.

Ambassador Domingo gave a lively presentation on the history and culture of the Philippines and led a showing of modern Filipino fashion.

A traditional Muslim fan dance from the Mindanao Islands followed, performed by Lonie Martin and Angie Briguera.

The evening ended with a buzz of conversation while sharing Filipino delicacies. This was another important step in making new friends and understanding the ancestral cultures of our community.

Khandallah resident David Hutton spoke to the REBUS Club of Khandallah about his time in the Pacific Islands consulting on state owned enterprises.

David Hutton gives Khandallah REBUS Pacific perspective The REBUS Club of Khandallah is a club for seniors and meets monthly in the Khandallah Bowling Club in Woodmancote Road.

The July speaker was David Hutton, a Khandallah resident, who has been consulting in several tropical Pacific Island countries for the last 18 years, mostly on Stateowned Enterprises. He talked about Kiribati and his work there with a focus on one example, the shipyard in the capital, Tarawa. Illustrated with many photos he had personally taken, David set the scene for why having a working shipyard was essential for a country with 20 widespread inhabited islands needing safe ferry services and an economy dependent upon fishing.

He explained that the shipyard was very rundown and financially insolvent. His photos graphically showed the rusty damaged slipway and examples of failed boat construction. Then, the only slipway failed, so there was no ability to check the safety of ships’ hulls and

ferries had to sail to Fiji for repairs.

His consulting team were able to set up a private sector concession contract with international experts able to fix the broken slipway and build a new, larger one. But there were many problems, including major damage to the shipyard from cyclone Pam, which required renegotiation before the deal settled.

This was an interesting tale of an isolated country most people didn’t know much about and how an aid project could overcome obstacles to help improve the lives of people living in remote islands.

Greater Wellington a nd Metlink have welcomed news from last week’s Tramways Union stop work meeting that a new collective agreement with NZ Bus has been reached after months of tense negotiations.

Daran Ponter, chair of Greater Wellington said the vote was good news for the public transport industry.

“We’ve been very vocal as a council that public transport across the country needs its profile raising to attract new drivers.

“We’ve put forwa rd our thoughts to Government on the review PTOM, fair pay agreements and putting drivers on the skills shortage list. We’ve also been working with the Government, operators and unions to put the Living Wage on the table, boosting base rates for around 50% of all drivers across all operators,” says Cr Ponter.

Committee said the outcome was a win for drivers and the communities they serve.

“The public have been very vocal on this issue, wanting a fair outcome for drivers, so it’s great to see the hard work and commitment of all parties coming to a good resolution.

We worked closely with the Council of Trade Unions, the Tramways Union and NZ Bus to provide successful independent facilitation to get negotiations back on track so it’s fantastic to see such a positive outcome,” says Cr Blakeley.

Metlink General Manager, Scott Gallacher, also welcomed the news which means the region’s public transport provider can bring further certainly to passengers across the network.

“We’ll be working closely with the Tramways Union and NZ Bus to draw up new timetables to reflect some of the real wins for drivers in this new agree-

ment. One of the most positive outcomes will be guaranteed 8-hour shifts on request, making work and home life easier to manage for drivers. This will mean a rethink for our NZ Bus timetables, which also gives us the opportunity to match current driver availability,” says Mr Gallacher.

With the vast majority of services running smoothly across the region, the timetable redesign will focus predominantly on Wellington City services.

“We’ll be looking to get agreement on a set of timetable changes that will better match staffing numbers to ultimately create a more flexible and reliable network,” adds Mr Gallacher.

Metlink aims to have new timetables for NZ Bus routes in place in the coming months and will keep passengers up to date with the network through the Metlink app and the Metlink website.

Greater Wellington and Metlink are welcoming news of a collective agreement with NZ Bus which has been reached.

4. Repair it – Unfortunately in today’s world, it can be cheaper to buy new than to repair. 5. Bulk Recycling – If you have collected up a lot of recycling over the years, you can take it all to your local recycling centre and drop it all off for free. Mastermind Bond pulls off Olympic coup Hamish Bond looked like a proud father as he stood alongside his younger men’s eight gold medalists.

Bond had just made his vision of putting New Zealand back on the map when it came to rowing’s blue riband event, a reality for the first time since 1972.

At the same time, he etched his name as one of this country’s best Olympians with his third gold medal in as many campaigns.

Bond is an understated athlete, who is quite unassuming and probably well suited to the laid-back feel of rowing as a sport in the country.

Even when he dominated the men’s pair for two Olympic cycles with Eric Murray, he was happy to play the sidekick role in the public eye to the more charismatic Murray.

Today, he stepped out of whatever shadow he may have been in.

Ironically, my biggest interaction

with him was when he was competing in a road cycling event in Nelson after the Rio 2016 campaign.

He beat Tour de France cyclist George Bennett that day (Bennett was starting his season and was short of race fitness) but it was impressive.

In speaking to him after the race, he came across to me as a reluctant star of the show.

He knew why the media was interested in him, he got it, but he

was unphased by it all.

He was polite and honest but far from chatty.

After the heroics of Friday, Bond had the look of a man whose grand plan had come together perfectly.

He seemed like a proud Cheshire Cat with a bowl of cream, lapping up the attention while also remaining down to earth.

People talk of the 1972 eight as one of the best moments in our sport’s history.

The 2021 effort was equally stunning and will also be talked about for decades to come.

Post-race Bond expressed how winning the eight was what had motivated him and what he wanted.

His vision has pulled off a moment for the ages.

One has to wonder if Blenheim’s Tom Murray, who was part of the boat, realises that this achievement will live on long after his lifetime.

What a day on the water.

North Wellington women earn promotion

North Wellington Women’s football has hit a high point with the Innkeeper North Wellington Women’s Premier team ensuring promotion to the W League (Women’s Central Region football) thanks to a 4-2 away win over Upper Hutt City. With one game to go Norths retain their three-point margin over Wellington United. United are regarded as a dominant club in the women’s game and already field a team in the W League so could not be promoted even if they surpassed North Wellington and posted an eight goal differential. The good news didn’t end there with the North Wellington Women’s Division 1 side earning the right to be promoted to the Women’s Premier League spot. The smile on coach Paul Hallet’s face may well last until kick off next season.

Top level football in the Capital continued over the weekend, despite

a scheduled weekend off in the Men’s Central League.

In the Chatham Cup Quarter Finals the two last remaining Wellington teams enjoyed their day in the sun at the expense of sides who normally ply their trade in the Northern League.

Auckland City travelled to David Farrington Park to face Miramar Rangers. Auckland City are the league leaders in their competition and have a 9 point buffer and a game in hand over their nearest rivals. Miramar have similarly been in fine form all season and have consistently been in the top two slots in a neck and neck race with Wellington Olympic. In the end it was Miramar who progressed through to the semi finals with goals in each half for a 2-0 win.

Melville United travelled from Hamilton to square off against Western Suburbs at Endeavour Park. It was a tight affair throughout but Western Suburbs were hard to break

down at the back, kept their shape throughout and had the most chances overall.

This consistency resulted in just a single goal in the second half to ensure a 1-0 win for Wests and a quiet flight home for the young men from Melville on Sunday morning.

In the catch up game in the Men’s Central League, Waterside Karori enjoyed a dominant 4-0 win over Petone and this leaves just three matches to play for most teams now.

Wainuiomata seem the most likely to be relegated with no points to their name even though they still have a catch up game against North Wellington. Petone are probably feeling a little more secure on six points but are not out of the woods just yet. At the top end, Wellington Olympic have a two-point buffer over Miramar with 38 points and the same advantage applies again for Miramar over Lower Hutt City who are on 34 points.

Terrahawks come up just short in final A determined defensive display earned Avalon their 16-3 victory over Johnsonville in the Paul Potiki under-85kg final.

Avalon started in this grade in 2013 and have won the title in 2019 and 2021.

A feature of their play was defence.

They won 15 out of 16 games this year and didn’t concede a try in seven games – including all three victories against Johnsonville.

Johnsonville had plenty of possession, a lineout drive, but couldn’t break down Avalon.

Johnsonville opened the scoring with a penalty to centre Zyrus Grace whose booming left boot was narrowly off range with three other attempts.

Avalon responded courtesy of experienced first-five Manu Oliver who scored the only try of the match. From a lineout drive inside the Johnsonville 22, Oliver received the ball at pace, dummied both ways, and sailed through. The conversion made it 10-3, the halftime score.
