New year, new leaders
By Megan Connolly
High school students across the country are beginning to go back to school this week, and that includes this year’s head students at Wainuiomata High School Callum Lawrence, Sarah McLeod-Venu and Jason Taituave. Last week they began their leadership duties helping the new junior students adjust to high school life on orientation day. Head students act as role models and representatives of the school, speak at assemblies and help younger students. Continued on page 2. Bringing the buzz the to the high school Continued from page 1. There were 11 incoming seniors who applied for the head student positions. The application involved a lot of preparing, the three say. Each had to make a speech in front of the school before they were shortlisted and interviewed. All three leaders grew up admiring the leaders of the school and it was a goal of their own to become one, they say. “I used to look up to them and wanted to be like them,” Sarah says. “I feel like people notice you a bit more. You’re in the spotlight.” “It was their moxie,” Callum adds. Since they all accepted their new roles, they have already felt the responsibility to look after the younger students, bring them all closer together and help them feel supported throughout their transition. “I want to try and help the new students,” Sarah says. “I remember when I started and there were people there to

help me. I just want to make a more vibrant school place and try and get people more involved in events.” Callum he has dreams of graduating and going into the military. “I want to see a lot of students more confident in themselves, the interaction between all the year
levels, and see more seniors talk to everyone.” Jason adds “No one meshes, I want to bring the buzz back.” Sarah is a keen sportsperson, as are Callum and Jason, and they are all heavily involved with the school and local sports. When he graduates, Jason hopes
to pursue “something sporty” while Sarah is hoping to study architecture when she leaves school. There is no rest for these new leaders who will be taking to the school stage this week at their first assembly, making their first speeches.
New Melling Interchange a boost for Lower Hutt Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry has welcomed last weeks news that the Government will fund a new Melling Interchange near central Lower Hutt, to be completed by 2026. “This announcement is fantastic news for our city and shows the Government has heard loud and clear this project is a priority and deserving of investment,” Campbell says. “The news will come as a relief to the many thousands of commuters who face delays at the current Melling intersec-
tion, and will support a more seamless journey along State Highway Two-unimpeded by traffic lights.” A new interchange at Melling will not only improve transport safety, reliability and transport choice, but is also a critical part of flood protection work. “Our council is investing significantly to make our city more resilient and a better place to live. An interchange at Melling means that we can push on with flood protection as part of the RiverLink project to safeguard the long
term future of residents and businesses. “The upgrade of the interchange will also strengthen connectivity to the Western Hills, and enable future improvements to public transport - including the possibility of extending the train line.” Campbell says the announcement shows the strength of local representatives working together for the best of Lower Hutt. “Local representatives — MPs, councillors, and others across the region— have made
a strong case for this investment. By working together we have been able to present a persuasive and united case to central government. “While a new Melling Interchange is a major boost for our city and goes a long way to address some of our transport issues, it isn’t a silver bullet to all of the challenges we face. “As Mayor I’m focused on building on this positive momentum, and developing an integrated plan that looks to the future of our transport network locally,” Campbell says.

Local spirit flying high By Megan Connolly
If you have driven into Wainuiomata down the hill or through Queen Street at the weekend, you may have noticed a bright and vibrant addition to the flag poles. Organised by Love Wainuiomata, the flags show everything special that Wainuiomata has to offer and features several smiling locals. “Our community is very welcoming and Wainuiomata is a big beautiful place to explore so we wanted to celebrate that with these flags,” Esther King from Love Wainuiomata says. “Wainuiomata is naturally stunning and gives locals and visitors an incredible journey from our beautiful maunga Pukeatua, through our stunning valley where wild kiwi live, out to our wild coast. “That journey and richness are reflected in the flags,” she says. Two of the photographs were taken by Hutt Valley resident Glen Butler who began taking photos at 18 years old. “It keeps me busy,” he says.
“I enjoy the downtime and personal time away from the hustle and bustle. “I’m pretty lucky that a lot of landowners are helpful and let me take photos of their land.” To get that perfect shot the conditions have to be perfect, not a cloud in the sky, and the circumstance has to align, he says. “You go to a lot of effort to get the shot.” Like all Love Wainuiomata projects, the flags wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of so many, Esther says. “We are grateful to all those locals in the images, to Wainuiomata Marae, and to the very talented photographer Glen Butler who donated the use of two of his stunning night photos taken on the Wainuiomata coast,” Esther adds. “Also Cr Simon Edwards shared the photo of local musician Poropiti Rangitaawa from the fantastic Te Hikoi Ararewa Shared Pathway opening, and huge thanks to Four Winds Foundation for a generous grant that has made these flags possible.”

inbrief news Dangers of vaping New initiative ‘Don’t Get Sucked In’ encourages teens to learn more about the health impacts of vaping, and why it’s important to get all the facts. Recent studies show a growing number of New Zealand youth both experimenting with and regularly vaping. It will challenge students to find out if they have been influenced or ‘sucked in’ by some of the common misconceptions surrounding vaping and e-cigarette devices. In addition to being a central hub of vaping information, the Don’t Get Sucked In website provides a range of free downloadable posters for teachers and information on how to address vaping with students and teens. For more information or resources visit dontgetsuckedin.co.nz or email info@ dontgetsuckedin.co.nz.

It’s about the people for Ray By Megan Connolly
Over the last 24 years in public service and nine years as Mayor, former Mayor of Hutt City Council Ray Wallace couldn’t be more thankful for all the wonderful people he has met and experiences he’s had. Now that the run for Mayor is over, and handed over to another Wainuiomata local Campbell Barry, Ray is looking forward to settling down into private civilian life and putting his feet up. “I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and family now I have more free time,” he says. “I feel we are blessed to have such a close-knit community where I met my wife Linda who was born and raised here. “I could not have done what I have done as Mayor without her great support.” But what made his time on the community board, then on the council and as Mayor so special was always the people. “I never saw it as a job, but about service. I was always a servant of the people. “My mayoralty has always been about people.”
The Itchy Scratchy Show! Moist folds of skin provide the perfect breeding ground for fungi. This is especially the case during summer time. And, once a fungal infection has set in, it can spread to other areas of the body, such as the scalp and nails.
What causes a fungal infection? Most skin, nail and scalp infections are caused by fungi called dermatophytes, and the most common type of infection to occur is tinea. Tinea is caught from other people – through infected showers or bathroom floors – and can also come from pets or infected soil. The staff at Clive’s Chemist are regularly faced with various occurrences of tinea: ringworm, jock itch, facial infections, and infections of the hands, feet, scalp, and beard. In between the toes and groin, tinea appears as red, flaky, moist and itchy skin. On the scalp, swollen, inflamed patches may appear, accompanied by hair loss.
These often require specialised and long–term treatment. This summer we have also seen a lot of people with inflamed fungal rashes under the armpits.
Preventing and treating fungal skin infections There are several ways to prevent fungal infections:
Throughout his time in office, Ray has worked on many projects that have impacted the community in a positive way and can still be seen today. Following the devastating floods of 1995 and 2004, he championed council to get money spent on flood protection, worked with fellow councillors to put in the Parkway Extension, helped to upgrade and enliven Queen Street, and championed both the design of the Pukeatua Bridge and the shared pathway over Wainuiomata Hill. He a lso doork nocked around the community in 2000 to fund the skatepark which is found on The Strand. “I have loved every minute of my work,” he says. “I have enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people over the years. A lot of those people are now long time friends.” He adds that, even though reports are a big part of the job, his favourite part has always been the people. Although he is enjoying some downtime, Ray is going to jump headfirst into more community projects soon.

Kindergarten Play Morning By Melissa Zgomba
Families with preschool-aged children are invited to a free Kindergarten Play Morning at the Wainuiomata Memorial Hall on Thursday February 13th. This event will be hosted by Hutt City Kindergartens, a not-for-profit organisation which has five kindergartens in Wainuiomata. “We promise a fun morning of play for preschool-aged children, with ac-
tivities to give families a taste of what kindergarten offers,” said Charmaine Hakaraia, Hutt City Kindergartens general manager operations. “We will have storytime sessions, face painting, craft activities and toys; as well as a free morning tea and great coffee for parents and caregivers,” says Charmaine. The Kindergarten Play Morning is free to attend and there is no need to register. Simply come along between 9.30am and 11.30am to join
in the fun. “A teacher from each of our five local kindergartens will be there with an activity which is popular with their tamariki. For parents and caregivers we will have information tables about local services and topics of interest to families,” Charmaine says. More information about the Kindergarten Play Morning can be found on the Hutt City Kindergarten’s Facebook page.
• Keep skin clean and dry • Dry between the toes and skin folds after swimming or showering • Keep bathroom and shower floors clean by using bleach to disinfect • Do not share towels • Wear jandals in communal areas and changing rooms Mostly, fungal infections are treated with topical medicines. So, if you have a rash that you’re not sure about, come and see the experts at Clive’s Chemist, who will recommend the right solution for every type of fungal infection.
Fungal infections between the fingers or toes, including “athlete’s foot” can spread to the nails.

On fire in world burnout competition By Megan Connolly
Local burnout star, Hayden Wilby headed to two main events in January. Earlier in the month a team of 10 flew in to Sydney and drove their muscle car, Nut Out, to Canberra to compete in the Summernats burnout competition. The team, which consists of mostly local faces, fundraised for many months in the lead up to the event by selling merchandise and hosting a vintage car and burnout car show at the Fitzroy Tavern last year. “It was awesome that we did our thing at one of the biggest burnout competitions in the world.” Summernats had more than 100,000 people attend with over 2000 cars in competition. “The scale was pretty crazy. You can’t even compare Summernats to the other events,” Hayden adds. In Australia, the car hit a “couple of walls” and burst into flames. “So the car was a bit charcoaled and it did a bit of damage. But that’s all part of it.” More recently, Hayden headed down to Christchurch to enter in the Muscle Car Madness event which saw him come in second place. “It was pretty cool,” Hayden says. He would like to thank the com-
munity for helping pave the way to Summernats by buying merchandise and supporting them. In the coming weeks Hayden and the gang will be heading out all over the country for more burnout competitions. “You don’t really go out to win, you go out to have fun.”

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page
Kobe’s global impact Kobe Bryant’s death last week brought a lot of things into perspective. Few athletes are so transcendent that they are known by one name. Tiger, Serena, MJ, Shaq - Kobe was one of those. Tickets to the Lakers and Clippers game two days after his death, which was eventually postponed, rose five times in price following the tragedy. That’s what a 20-year career in LA with 18 all star appearances and five NBA championships can do. I’m not a huge watcher of the NBA.
Even today, I only tune in to the playoffs and keep a fleeting eye on the regular season. I’d consider myself a bandwagon boarding Los Angeles Lakers fan based purely on the dominance of Kobe and Shaq in the early 2000s as I grew up as a kid. He was, along with Michael Jordan and the movie Space Jam, the reason I knew what the NBA was. The 41-year-old, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others are now needlessly lost and the sports world was plunged into
mourning. My biggest takeaway as I tried to process the demise of a global icon was just how meaningless sport is in the grand scheme of things. Sport is simply an enjoyable way to pass time. A blunt assessment perhaps, a select few, including myself in a small part, have made a living in it but at the end of the day, sport starts and stops on a whistle and family is constant. We all get emotionally invested in our teams but what does yelling at
Mountain biking in Waiu Park Waiu Park’s trail ride was the host of an exciting Moutain Bike Club Enduro Series event at the weekend. Over 160 keen bikers from all over the Wellington region showed up to compete in the series which
follows the Wainuiomata Trail Park track. This is one of many competitions of the season. The year has already seen the club hold an event at Belmont Regional Park.

known to be ruthlessly competitive on the court, especially in his early years. By the end, he had mellowed somewhat after much success and he appeared to enjoy the mentor role he found himself in after his career. It will now be up to the NBA to figure out what is the best way to honour him long-term. It won’t be easy finding the right way to do that when you lose one of the top 10 players the game has ever seen at such a young age.
Up and over! Getting some height as a pro-biker makes a jump.
Bikers will be heading to Makara Peak in a fortnight for another competition. For more individual results of the day visit Wellington Mountain Bike Facebook page.

Cricket team starts year on top Wainui premier reserve cricket team played Onslow at the weekend at Bryan Heath Park. Winning the toss, Wainui chose to bowl first on a green hard wicket and took full advantage, taking all 10 wickets for 136 runs in 37 overs. Best of the bowlers was Saikat Sahoo with 4-18 and Jason Logan with 3-61. Wainui made short work of
the television, posting a negative social media on a player’s performance really achieve in the long run? Compared to a life lost in an instant, not much. It’s ok to mourn the loss of someone you did not know. For many, Kobe’s death represents the loss of part of their childhood. He was a global superstar mourned in almost every part of the world. He grew up in front of the world. From the cocky 18-year-old who burst on the scene in 1997, he was
the target reaching 140 in 22 overs for a 7 wicket win. Tim Wilson continued his stellar form reaching 65* and have now passed 500 runs for the season and with 8 games remaining is setting his targets high. The 3 wins since Christmas have now put Wainui 18 points clear at the top of the table and they play Indian Cricket Club at Te Whiti park on Saturday.
Families play tennis together Wainuiomata Tennis Club held its annual senior family tournament on Sunday. The players were all challenged by the very windy conditions but there was a lot of great tennis and fun was had by all. The winners were Josh Castle and Bruce Austin with Joe and Christopher Easthope as runner-ups. For more results and photos from the day visit Wainuiomata Tennis Club on Facebook.
