Worth the wait

A piece of Karori’s Wrights Hill Fortress history was returned on Saturday, 62 years after it captured the eye of a seven-yearold boy.

Chris Fleming and his Dad, Alan, found a large steel nut from the No 2 Gun, while exploring the area one day in 1960, long after the area had been decommissioned after WWII. Continued on page 2.

The nut immediately caught Chris’ eye and he asked his Dad if they could take the 40kg nut home in the car.

“After returning home for some rope we (dad) hauled it up and manhandled it into the car with a collection of smaller nuts,” Chris says.

On Saturday, Chris and his family returned it to the Wrights Hill Fortress Restoration Society, with a morning ceremony.

“This collection lived around the place at home but while inspirational didn’t help me recreate the gun pit in our garden which I had thought to do.

“Ending up in the basement but not before the yellow paint was added to avoid the orange rust smearing my hands.”

Chris, who lives in Auckland, drove the nut down with his family for the event which had been 20 years in the making.

“After visiting the now reopened fortress in about 2002, it became clear that the nut needed to find a permanent home back where it was originally intended to be,” Chris says.

The nut is approximately 255mm in height, 290mm in width and 142mm in depth and weighs 44kg.

Calvert continues charge for Khandallah Pool

Wharangi/Onslow-Western Ward councillor Diane Calvert will look to move a motion today to ensure the Khandallah Pool upgrade is completed in time for its centenary in 2025.

Council officers have indicated the $8 million project may not be completed until November 2026 due to “risks”.

Wellington City Councillors voted 13-2 in favour of giving the 96-year-old outdoor pool a makeover in February.

It will mean the pool will get its first major upgrade in almost 60 years.

The pool is set to receive a full rebuild of pool and sur-

rounding buildings, a reverse current layout, with an entrance directly off the car park, deep and shallow ends reversed, a splash pad moved near the new entrance.

The pool will also have a heated middle section of pool with built-in spa, as well as a deep, cold water section and bombing platform.

Diane, who has been championing for an upgrade to the pool since 2017, says it is frustrating that council staff are dragging their feet.

Johnsonville snapper rail trial goes across region Metlink is set to roll out an interim electronic payment by Snapper across the rest of the region’s rail network as part of the transition to the National Ticketing Solution.

This follows a successful trial on the Johnsonville Line.

“With four out of every five passengers on the Johnsonville line now paying by Snapper, we have seen a resounding thumbs up from our customers. This provides the best possible basis for extending electronic payment throughout the Metlink rail network,” says Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain.

The Johnsonville Line’s Snapper on Rail pilot began in November last year, providing the opportunity for Greater Wellington to get to grips with the physical, operational and passenger requirements needed for an electronic ticketing future on its rail network.

and then across the Hutt Valley, Melling and Wairarapa lines in late November 2022. This process will require the installation of Snapper validator machines to enable passengers to ‘tag-on and off’ at all stations.

“Snapper on Rail will enable passengers to experience the same electronic payment method currently used on Wellington’s buses and will be a key step in Metlink’s transition to the National Ticketing Solution. The bottom line is that international and local experience shows that customers increasingly prefer and use cash-free methods of payment for public transport.” says Greater Wellington chair Cr. Daran Ponter.

Calling all wonderful Wellingtonians Nominations are now open for this year’s Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards.

The awards are one way for the Wellington City Council to honour members of the community who have made outstanding or lengthy contributions, usually in a voluntary capacity, to the capital and its people.

Last year’s winners included those with truly inspiring stories of helping people and enhancing Wellington’s rich fabric through community service, conservation, advocacy or the arts.

Mayor Andy Foster says the awards are a way of celebrating all that is good about Wellington.

“These awards recognise extraordinary talent, tenacity and the ethos of service, even during the testing times of Covid.

“I know these beautiful people do what

they do because they want to make a real positive difference to some aspect of our city, not to seek recognition. Nevertheless, it’s a lovely thing to say a special heartfelt ‘thank you’ on behalf of our community.

“It’s a privilege to honour those whose hard works may otherwise go unnoticed,” he says.

Deputy Mayor Sarah Free says the city is lucky to have an extraordinary array of volunteers who do amazing work and it is great to be able to acknowledge their contribution to city life.

“We expect to see lots of entries so that recipients are not only recognised, but their stories can be told,” she says.

Ngaio breast cancer patient challenges herself NEW STOCK BE QUICK A 26-year-old woman from Ngaio is not letting a breast cancer diagnosis stop her from setting her sights high next month, as she fundraises for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Imogen McIvor found a lump in her breast last November and was subsequently diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer. She had a partial mastectomy, is now undergoing chemotherapy and is yet to face radiation treatment. But despite the gruelling treatment regime, Imogen is aiming to walk 3,300 steps a day in honour of the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand every year, complete nine burpees for the number of women diagnosed each day, wear pink every day and end the month with a Pink Ribbon Breakfast.

“The physical challenges will be hard for me, as with all my treatments I’ve had to take time off from exercise. I’ve always wanted to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast and I’ll finish the month of challenges with an afternoon tea with friends and family, where I can talk about my journey and raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ,” said Imogen.

“My advice to all women is to check yourself, and to be super aware of your own body. Know the different types of indicators for breast cancer, it’s not just lumps. It’s really important to know what you’re looking for, so you can get any changes checked out as soon as they appear.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women, with around 360 women in the greater Wellington area diagnosed with it annually.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s biggest fundraising campaign, where each May, thousands of Kiwis get together to do good in their communities. The

Wellingtonians are being urged to host a pink breakfast to support breast cancer research this month.

money raised goes towards ground-breaking research, education and awareness programmes, and patient support services.

But the Foundation is facing a 50% drop in Pink Ribbon Breakfast registrations on last year – a huge blow after two years of Covid-19 crushing their fundraising efforts. The charity desperately needs to increase registrations to hit its $2 million fundraising target.

“In this third year of the pandemic, we know people are facing really tough times, but every Pink Ribbon Breakfast – no matter how small or simple – will make a massive difference for Kiwi women with breast cancer,” said AhLeen Rayner, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. “The funds raised will help us to restore and transform breast screening in New Zealand.

We want women to get diagnosed more easily and quickly, which will greatly improve their survival chances,” Rayner added.

Early plans and images of Wellington’s new Central Library have been released.

Wellington’s new Central Library design Wellington City Council has released artist impressions of the preliminary design of Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui – Central Library.

The current plans aim to build on the existing structure to create a uniquely Wellington library, that strengthens the story of Mana Whenua and history of Te NJƗNau, as well as the building itself, so we can continue serving our growing communities for the next 50-75 years.

The renders show the building’s increasing accessibility and connection with Te NJƗkau Civic Precinct

by moving the existing entrance via the stairs to ground level rather than mezzanine level.

A café and seating are likely to be located in this corner entrance and will be able to stretch out into the Te NJƗNau Precinct.

Above that corner is a new Te Whanganui a Tara room which will highlight the collection and culture of our city. It will have views out to the harbour and inner city.

Inside, the building is proposed to be much lighter and brighter, with a light shaft from the ceiling to bring in natural light.

Council laying the groundwork for circular economy roading trial Wellington City Council started a trial this week using textiles as a performance additive in asphalt on our roads – a first for New Zealand.

The Council-led trial, in partnership with Usedfully®, Scion and Fulton Hogan, is designed to create a circular economy system to reuse the untapped resource of unwanted clothing and textiles, onshore in Aotearoa.

Textile waste is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing waste streams, their outsized impact relative to weight make them an ideal focus for carbon reduction activities.

Improving the performance of our roads, creating jobs and economic opportunity onshore while also reducing waste and emissions is a win-win-win scenario, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“We’re supporting organisations, projects and initiatives that reflect a circular economy as part of our Te Atakura – First to Zero goal and our strong ambition to reduce our collective footprint on the planet.

“This trial is a perfect example of cross collaboration and stewardship focused on improving sustainability for future generations.

“We’re proud to support Usedfully in this leading-edge work, which we hope will have applications to make a difference across New Zealand and then globally.”

Leading the co-design and building of a national circular economy for clothing and textiles in Ao-

tearoa, Usedfully began working with Scion exploring potential applications for waste textile fibre in New Zealand quickly sparking industry interest and funding.

Cellulose is currently imported for use as an additive in asphalt roading mix to stabilise it, improve its workability, homogeneity and the strength of the final road. Meanwhile, we have an estimated 220,000 tonnes of potential fibre in the form of textiles going to landfill in New Zealand every year.

The Terrace between Ghuznee and Buller Streets will be the first section of road trialled with the new product. It’ll be laid with ‘Strength-Tex’ which incorporates 500kgs (half a tonne) of used textiles, conserving approximately 11,725kgs C02e (carbon equivalent) and 568,500 litres H20 (water).

Reusing the fibres in roading will boost the roading industries resilience by reducing the country’s reliance on imported products and improve the performance of our roads.

Diverting New Zealand’s textile from landfills could result in potential greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 400,000 t CO2e a year.

“Strength-Tex is the first of a number of industrial scale solutions we have developed from unwanted textiles,” says Peter Thompson CEO of Usedfully.

“It not only provides a fit for purpose product for our roads and construction industry, it also

Wellingtonians urged to keep cars safe Police are urging the public to take precautions to keep their vehicles safe after a spike in stolen vehicles across the Wellington region since February.

“The most commonly targeted vehicles continue to be the Mazda Demio, the Nissan Tiida and the Mazda Atenza, with many

of these vehicles taken so the offenders can go on a joy ride,“ says Inspector Wade Jennings, Wellington District Prevention Manager.

The runners-up were another composite team of Mark Burgess, Wayne Coleman and Ian McLeod.

Understand the commitment: I find that most buyers focus too much on the repayment amount and not enough on the long-term implications, most buyers don’t even know how much they are truly paying back over the mortgage term. Taking out a mortgage is a big financial commitment, and all parties need to be aware of the payment amounts and understand how these can fluctuate as rates increase.

2. Be Honest: All parties should be transparent about their financial position, spending and other debt they may have.

It is important that neither party stretch themselves to make this commitment or hide the fact that they may not be able to sustain this level of debt long-term. It is better to address this upfront than to find one of the parties in a difficult situation down the track.

3. Invest in legal & financial advice: The main issue here is around ownership and the structure of the legalities. up holding resentment long-term. Investing in real estate is a long-term game and in markets like these, you must be prepared for the long journey of ownership. When looking at houses, ensure all parties view and have access to all the documentation relating to the property.

5. Mortgage Structure: A good mortgage broker is worth their weight in gold. Good mortgage brokers who go out their way to look at all options are rare! Most brokers just send you to the easiest bank to deal with or one that pays them the highest commission. Find a broker you can trust to look after your every need and have a creative approach about how to best structure your mortgage to ensure all parties benefit long-term.

The market has cooled, and properties are much more affordable – now is a great time to look at getting into your own home and locking in a mortgage before further interest rate hikes happen. What started as saving a few leftover sandwiches and ready-to-eat meals from going in the bin, has turned into more than 2.6 million kilos of food being donated to charities over the past decade.

Kaibosh is no ordinary organisation – they are New Zealand’s first food rescue organisation, which has been feeding Wellingtonians in need since 2008.

Kaibosh General Manager Matt Dagger says the organisation “almost kind of happened by chance” with a simple but effective concept – they received quality surplus food which they passed on to charities who could provide it to people in need.

Now, Kaibosh has three branches open across Wellington, redistributing 60 tonnes of surplus food each month. They support over 130 charities and organisations with the goal of ‘Zero food poverty. Zero food waste’.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Controlling some pests: By Wally Richards I am often asked about how to control populations of slugs and earwigs in gardens without using the usual chemicals.

You may not realise it but both earwigs and slugs do provide EHQH¿ W WR \RXU JDUGHQV DV WKH\ prefer decomposing plant material to living plants so if you are clean and tidy and there are no rotting plants available then they will do damage to your growing plants.

When you are weeding, if you leave some weeds on the soil to break down naturally then the two pests will become assets.

Sprinkling lawn mowing clippings on to gardens is another way of using what many conVLGHU D ZDVWH SURGXFW WR EHQH¿ W One precaution with that is if the lawn grasses are seeding, as you would then be putting a lot of new grass weeds into your gardens to germinate later.

If the slugs and earwigs (you can include with them slaters or as some call them, wood lice) are a real problem then you could try the following.

I learnt about this method a long time ago and have often suggested to gardeners to use it.

What you need are some strips of 3 plywood or similar about 250-300mm long and about 150mm wide.

These are laid down on the soil in areas where you are having problems with the pests.

Now you take a trigger sprayer and mix two parts bleach to one part water.

During the day you fold back the slats of ply on to their far edge and see what is hiding under them.

If you have some of the pests you wish to control simply give them a spray of your bleach and lay the ply back down on top of them.

Repeat the same process regularly until you have the pest population under control.

Slugs and snails cannot tolerate copper as it makes them dehydrate and die.

If either pest comes into contact with copper they will not pass over the barrier it creates.

So this can be used to protect seedings from being their evening meal.

I suggest placing untreated sawdust around the seedlings you wish to protect then spraying the sawdust and seedlings with Wallys Liquid Copper and Raingard added.

Much safer than using toxic poisons to kill them and better for the safety of your pets and wildlife.

There is another slug like pest which is commonly called the cherry slug or pear s lug as it feeds on these trees during the summer period when they are active.

They start about November to

December in most areas and can be seen as a small black slimy slug on the foliage which they are eating. ,I \RX GR QRW WUHDW WKLV ¿ UVW generation, then in January to February there will be a second large wave of them and damage will correspondingly increase.

The best solution is to spray the foliage with Wallys Liquid Copper with Raingard added as they can not handle copper either.

Another one that can be used for snails and slugs is the mineral iron.

There is a slug and snail bait on the market that uses chelate iron as the killing component which means it’s fairly safe for pets and wild life.

You can make a slug and snail bait yourself by soaking bran in a solution of sulphate of iron and water or if you have it available use chelate iron.

Add to this yeast, which is what attracts the pests and they will eat the bran which now contains iron and die as a result.

There is one pest that you will never gain complete control of if they are in your area and that is ants.

Many of the ant baits on the PDUNHW DUH RQO\ H൵ HFWLYH IRU D little while as the ants become bait shy to them, realising that the bait is what is killing them.

Many years ago I found a very

old formula that ants never seem to wake up to the fact it is killing them.

We call it Granny Mins Ant Bait and the container has a combination of borax and boric acid with the recipe on how to make it up.

The product is very inexpensive, selling for about $7 and you just dissolve the jar’s contents in hot water and add the required amount of sugar and honey. It makes just about a litre of bait.

Stir well and place the mixture in small jar lids wherever you see ants.

Top up the lids as they empty till there is no more ant activity.

The bait should only be used outdoors and if you have any concern for pets then put a small amount of liquid ant bait into small

jars and lay them on their sides on the ground.

The small amount of ant bait used is not likely to be harmful to pets but better safe than sorry.

If ants are inside your home then WKH HDV\ PRVW H൵ HFWLYH ZD\ LV WR set up one or more of those insect cans that release pyrethrum spray every few minutes.

As long as that can is operating, and even for a few weeks after it has emptied, no ants will come into that area.

They detect that there is pyrethrum around and know it is not good for them.

Cockroaches inside your kitchen are a curse for some people and the easy way to control them safely is to sprinkle borax powder behind the fridge and stove.

Where to for our Aussie sport franchises?

It’s been a mixed bag of fortunes for the Kiwi teams stuck across the ditch forced to play in their respective Australian competitions for the past couple of years.

The bigger question is how the Warriors, Breakers and Phoenix do once they return to their home stadium fulltime.

Despite their record 70-10 flogging by the Melbourne Storm two games ago, I expect the Warriors to be fine when they return to Mt Smart Stadium.

The team could compete for the top eight this season but are likely to finish just outside the playoffs, in my view, but their fans remain loyal to a fault so they’ll fill the stadium when they do return.

I also think the NRL need to have the Warriors play every game of their 2023 campaign at home as a thank you for the sacrifices they have made to keep the competition going during the pandemic period.

The Phoenix have been the

standout of the franchises in terms of on-field performance and they look set to play finals football in the A-League this season which is a truly fantastic achievement.

The Phoenix have a moral fan base, if not a big fan base and they will have lost no admirers in Wellington for their efforts.

My big concern is the Breakers in the Australian National Basketball League.

The franchise was dealt no favours this year with Covid

and some unreasonable game scheduling hurting them early in the season.

However, it doesn’t explain them losing 23 of 28 matches and finishing with a points differential of -244.

That’s unwatchable basketball and if the Breakers continue to be non-competitive, I can see their fan base dwindling when they return home.

The ANBL is hard to source and it often goes up against more

popular sports in the television time slots.

The Breakers owners really need to do a much better job at putting together a watchable, competitive product on the court.

Kiwis won’t tolerate being the laughing stock of any league for too long.

All three teams will have to get out in the community and get back in front of their fans.

Two of the three teams already have a head start.

Hawks can’t seal the deal in draw with Rams Johnsonville was left to rue lapses in key moments as they were forced to settle for a 21-21 draw with the Upper Hutt Rams in their round five Swindale Shield encounter, at Helston Park, on Saturday.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson admitted he felt almost every imaginable emotion throughout the 80 minutes.

The Hawks were underwhelming in the opening half and trailed the Rams 13-0 at the break.

The second half though was an engrossing affair. The Rams were able to extend their lead even though evergreen hooker Eli Hunt spent time in the bin after a controversial penalty against Hawks fullback Jason Tuitama.

But with 30 minutes to go the Hawks kicked into life. Firstly Johnsonville No.8 Sam Green burst through to score, converted

by Mark Sutton, then Green repeated the dose from close range.

When Sutton converted from out wide the Hawks had taken the lead. A third Svenson penalty put the Rams back in front, but after another Rams card Sutton darted over from a scrum and converted with just moments left on the clock.

But the Rams were able to gain possession from the kick-off, got some go forward under penalty advantage from replacement No8 Toby Crosby, and his hopeful pass back inf-ield was snapped up

by Todd Svenson who scampered over with time well up. That left Scott Svenson with a kick to win the game but it drifted wide, leaving the teams as they started.

Jason says the team played well once they got going but they left too many chances on the field.

“We need to be better at game management,” he says.

“We were gutted at the final whistle and the boys knew they had let a win get away.”

Jason says the line out was improved while the scrum remained a work in progress.

“We are getting better in a number of areas and there’s certainly points in us but we just lack composure at times when it comes to closing out games.

The opposition does not get easier with Swindale Shield front-runners Hutt Old Boys Marist this Saturday.

Johnsonville will also have some injury worries with lock Serge Hollis, prop Tevita Falekalala, centre Aukuso Tuitama all injury concerns while No 10 Levi Grace will also be unavailable.

Johnsonville are eighth on the Swindale Shield table with two wins, a draw and two losses from their five games.

North Wellington earn first Central League win

With thoughts of summer sport still very much top of mind, it’s hard to fathom that the Men’s Central Football league is already a third of the way through its schedule after round six played out over the weekend.

Whatever is in the water at Karori Park, keep drinking it would be the advice of the moment as Waterside went head-to-head with fellow chart toppers Wellington Olympic on Saturday. It’s been a golden run for the local team right from the beginning of the competition and the 1 all draw against Olympic could be seen by many as almost as good as a win. Golden Boot Merlin Luke-Miny got his 8th goal for the season and put Waterside on the board after 16 minutes. It took Olympic until 20 minutes before the end of play to square the match and in doing so, retain top spot over Waterside on goal difference alone.

There was nothing close in the match up between Miramar Rangers and Wellington

United at Rangers’ temporary home ground at Newtown Park. This is due to less than ideal surface conditions at David Farrington Park. Real home pitch or not, it didn’t matter as Rangers racked up 5 unanswered goals against Wellington United who are in last place, again due to goal difference.

The pundits picked Wellington Phoenix Reserves to be too strong at home against a struggling Napier City Rovers and so it proved to be with a 4-2 win to the Nix. It was TFS North Wellington who had to get the 7.30am bus on Sunday morning to face Havelock North Wanderers in Hastings. A long day ahead and a repeat round of chicken rolls and bananas from the Easter trip to Napier City Rovers was no doubt still fresh in the memories of the North Wellington men. It must have been the bananas because Norths had 3 goals on the board by half time thanks to the opener by Thang Thang Vanuk and a brace to stand in Captain, Ihaia Delaney.

Wanderers pegged one back early in the

second spell and eventually nabbed another right on full time. It wasn’t enough though and Norths took the points with a 3-2 win.

At Endeavour Park Western Suburbs continued their topsy turvy run of form and were out classed 4-0 by Petone, the latter recording their first win of the season.

Wellington Olympic and Waterside Karori have 14 points after four wins and two draws each. It’s a point back to Miramar Rangers and a further point back to Wellington Phoenix Reserves. At the other end of the scale, Wellington United and Havelock North are warming the bench on two points each.

In the Women’s W League competition, Waterside Kaori enjoyed their own smorgasbord when they dished up 11 goals to none over Victoria University. Wellington United also had no trouble when the 2021 Champions put 5 goals over North Wellington by half time and came out 7-0 winners in the end.

Palmerston North Marist did enough in their 2-1 win over Petone.
