Wellbeing education Continued from page 1 As a year 13 student he was instrumental in bringing together students from throughout the North Island to petition government for better mental health education in schools and has continued leading the Union now that he has finished college.

Along with other memebers of the union he recently presented a case to provide better mental health education in schools to Labour minister of education Chris Hipkins.

Armed with statistics from Labour policies and from the Unions own investigations the group proposed that Labour finally put the effort into putting mental health

into the education curriculum.

“We had three demands and the main one was we wanted funding to be rerouted from providing more services to educating the youth in the schools,” he says.

Dallas says they came away from the meeting bitterly disappointed.

“We were fed the same policies Labour have been putting out in a flash new polish. We were told what we are proposing is very difficult to do,” he says.

The Union had gathered massive support from communities around the North Island and gathered over 6000 signatures.

On the 26th of April they launched a new campaign for change.

What they want is for the government to put more effort into funding more BluePrint MH101 courses in communities and schools - Putting more pressure on schools to include more Mental Health Internals or teachings in NCEA Level 1-2 courses -running more courses developed by professionals for Year 9-10 students to learn

the basics behind Mental Health.

Understanding the importance of breathing, understanding the real psychological reasons behind the importance of sleep, learning the differences between Depression and Anxiety and learning to identify and address possible triggers.

Schools with representatives of the Union are Saint Bernards, Hutt Valley High, Orans, Wellington East Girls, Wainuiomata High School and Onslow College.

He says calling for better mental health education in schools is not about publicity. The group just want to see what is desperately needed and that is suppport for youth where support is needed.

Specially prepared baskets for mums have been prepared with mothers day in mind but also to raise funds for Wainuiomata’s Kokiri Pataka.

Larges baskets have been put together by Pataka knitters and craft girls and added to the cuddly blankets, quilts, booties and hats they have been topped up with donations of deodorants, face creams soaps and toilet bags.

they are also making smaller baskets and tickets will be sold for the larger ones.

“Every time we get excess stuff in the shop we try and put it together in a way that it can be used as a fundraiser and I think the large baskets are value for money at $20 a ticket and the woven pepe baskets that are done by the ladies at Kokori are worth around $150.00,” Darcelle says.

“They have the quilts in them as well which is something that can be handed down.”

Farewell to Inspire Gallery

By Gerald Rillstone After three years of selling, promoting and marketing fabulous local art Inspire Art Gallery owner Estelle Cainey is hanging her last piece of work, closing the door and heading off on her own artistic adventure.

Almost three years ago Estelle set up the Homedale gallery to give local artist as platform to promote their work and to give

them a boost and a helping hand with their passion.

“The joys out of it are it has done the networking and helped showcase artists local and otherwise and bring them the confidence to show their work and it has helped them to flourish and gain their own confidence and it has helped them to get feed back on their work, and it has helped them value their work more and take it more seriously,” Estelle says.

With her own yearning to develop as an artist she is taking up other challenges.

“I am moving on to other projects and continue developing as an artist and I also have my coaching business that I need to focus on,” she says.

“The last year was difficult because of global things going on and there was a challenge running it all on my own while trying to do other things.”

Estelle originally studied at The Learning Connexion in the mid to late 1990s, after leaving an unfulfilling sales job. She discovered a passion for photography, but it was not until 2018 that she decided to fulfill the creative promise she made to herself two decades earlier and open Inspire Art Gallery.

She is also New Zealand’s first Qualified Fractology Practitioner, has a Diploma of Life Coaching and is also a Reiki Master/Teacher.

The Wainuiomata Rugby League masters team will be doing a Hangi Fundraiser on Saturday 15th May which will be ready for pick up @1:30pm from the club which co-incides with Club Day. Each hangi cost is $15 and consists of 3 meats, kumara, potato, pumpkin, cabbage and stuffing.

Meat-eating and masculinity remain inextricably linked in the New Zealanders psyche, a survey of 1,000 people has revealed, which could be making it difficult for men to feel comfortable exploring a healthier and more environmentally-sound diet, experts warn.

The study, commissioned by nonfor-profit No Meat May ahead of its expected record-breaking year of participation, surveyed 1,000 New Zealand adults in March 2021.

It found that 54 per cent of people still saw eating meat as a masculine undertaking, as opposed to something gender neutral or feminine.

No Meat May, challenges people around the world to eliminate meat from their diets for 31 days for health, environmental and social reasons, providing them with free support, tools, and an inclusive community to test out a meat-free or plant-based lifestyle for the month of May. Pay correction needed The country’s largest education union is calling on the Government to step in to correct pay injustices in the early childhood sector this International Workers’ Day. To coincide with May Day, NZEI Te Riu Roa members and supporters are set to kick off an ECE Week of Action today. Throughout the week early childhood teachers will be holding events across the country to demand an immediate end to the pay imbalance of up to 31% between ECE teachers and their counterparts in kindergartens and schools.

The Week of Action comes ahead of Budget announcements later this month, where the union’s members and supporters hope to see pay parity for the sector accelerated in line with promises made by the Minister of Education ahead of the last election.

The ECE Week of Action runs from 1-8 May.

Wreath thief strikes again Following on from the theft of a wreath from a grave at Wainuiomata Pioneer Church a wreath has also been stolen from the War Memorial in Wainuiomata following the ANZAC day ceremony.

Wainuiomata Marae’s Linda Olsen has been preparing wreaths for ANZAC day for the last 25 years and is devastated that someone would steal one.

The flu. Don’t get it.

Don’t give it!

There’s a nip in the air for sure lately. Which means now is the time to think about getting a flu shot.

Clive reckons that almost everyone can benefit from the protection of an annual flu shot. Getting the flu is a major threat as it can spread quickly through the community.

Not matter how fit, healthy, or tough you are, you’re not immune to the flu. It can strike at any time and will leave you unable to do just about anything. The flu can make you seriously ill and keep you in bed for at least a week.

This is particularly true if you are elderly or have an ongoing medical condition.

However, even if you don’t feel sick, you could still have the virus and pass it on to others.

A common misunderstanding is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu. This is not true. The flu shot is made up of dead flu viruses, so you can’t catch the flu from them. What happens is that after your shot, your body learns

what the flu looks like, so if you are exposed to the virus your body can fight it off.

Ideally, you should be vaccinated before May. Clive’s Chemist will have the flu shot available from UI April. Getting immunised is your best protection.

Illustrating fun at the Hub

By Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata Hub Kaitiaki and trained Illustrator Mike Hayes is offering a new fun opportunity for kids to learn illustrating on Thursday afternoons.

Mike who arrived in New Zealand from the United Kingdom in September 2020 has been at the Hub for the last four months and is keen to pass on his skills with free classes.

Back in the UK Mike’s day job was working for the London Underground while he continued freelance illustrating in his spare time.

He studied and trained as an illustrator in the UK and has had exhibitions and sold prints over a number of years and has been trained traditionally.

“I have been into art and design since I was a kid. It is what I studied at school, college and university,” Mike says.

“My wife is a Kiwi and we planned to move way before the pandemic and we arranged it all and the pandemic hit and we managed to move during it while the UK was going into lockdown which was pretty amazing,” he says.

Looking for library based jobs when

he arrived Mike had never heard of Wainuiomata and his first impression coming over the hill was the beautiful rural feel to the place.

“It reminds me of the north of England where I grew up and I love country side and hills and stuff like that, coming off the hill with the fog blanketing the town is an amazing sight, it’s beautiful” he says.

“I love the lookout on the hill looking at Petone. It is an amazing view.”

Soaking up the local atmosphere Mike has also invented a new character to inspire kids called “Whakapapa Man”.

“I am into superheros and the character was influenced by my surroundings and the culture around me and I wanted something to reflect the area around me and I do want to teach the kids do some simple superhero stuff,” Mike says.

Classes will start out with traditional work on paper with a pencil, rubber a pencil sharpener and paper.

The weekly Friday classes will be a permanent fixture at the hub on Fridays 3:30 to 4:30.

Mike is also in the process of completing a mural for the kids space at the library and has been

“The mural will be located on the wall space above the children’s area of the library, it’s based around our community’s cultures, knowledge and reading,” he says.

Drowning prevention The United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution on drowning prevention, acknowledging the issue for the first time in its 75-year history. New Zealand, along with over 80 countries worldwide co-sponsored this historic resolution, which was initiated by Bangladesh and Ireland.

In New Zealand, drowning is the leading cause of recreational death and the third highest cause of ac-

cidental death. In 2020 there were 74 preventable fatal drownings and with a fatal drowning rate of 1.7 per 100,000 people, these statistics put New Zealand at the higher end of OECD countries.

On 11 March this year, the Hon Pryanca Radhakrisnan, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector launched the sector’s Wai Ora Aotearoa: Navigating to a safer future - New Zealand Water Safety

Sector Strategy 2025.

The next step for WSNZ will be to ensure all water safety sector partners are aware of the resolution and what it says, and what it potentially means for the operations of the water safety sector in New Zealand.

The WHO will be organising webinars for disseminating information about the resolution and the first UN declared Drowning Prevention Day in July 2021.

inbrief news Education and training changes The Ministry of Education is seeking public feedback on proposals to amend the current Education and Training Act 2020.

The eight proposed changes to the Act which include: -how school board elections are run -ensuring all education employees are Police vetted before they begin work -strengthening and clarifying Teaching Council of Aotearoa processes dealing with teacher conduct -enabling the Education Review Office to review professional learning and development services The Ministry is also consulting on possible changes to the priority categories for out of zone enrolments in state schools.

In addition, the Education and Training Amendment Bill has received Cabinet approval and will be introduced shortly.

The Bill’s content includes expanding the timeframe that prohibits tertiary providers from charging trainees a compulsory student services fee, and ensuring that former teachers can only use physical restraint if they are approved by the school that employs them, along with other technical changes to the Education and Training Act 2020.

To build confidence and prepare for the next level of playing rugby Hutt Old Boys under eight kids in Wainuiomata had their first taste of contact sport.

Last weekend saw preparations get underway at a rugby camp for the team organised by team manager Marise Martin and her husband and coach for

the team Shaun Martin.

Tackle and touch rugby is all about the chase. Is to get the team ready for making contact with the opposition.

The camp has proved to be a fun introduction.

“For a majority of our boys this will be their first year at tackle and what we have done is set up a rugby camp just to introduce them into how to

tackle properly and safely, and that it is ok to be tackling” Marise says.

The team has been together while playing ripper and touch rugby and this year will see them move to the next level.

“We have had the team together for the summer touch season and we are all pretty competitive and this was a great chance to build the team

together further so they gel and the longer they have been together the better they work as a team,” she says.

“A lot of them weren’t going to come back this year because they weren’t keen on the whole contact sport side of things and I get that and this will give them more confidence and that it is not all bad and so it keeps them and the opposition safe.”

s 6 pork sausages (vegetarian, optional) s 700g bag Wattie’s frozen Crunchy Original Wedges s 1 large red onion, cut into wedges s 200 g button mushrooms, halved s 1 Tbsp olive oil s 8 tomatoes, quartered s 1 tsp Gregg’s Rubbed Rosemary s 4 Tbsp basil pesto (optional)

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan assisted). Prick the sausages and place in a single layer in a low sided roasting dish. Cook for 10 minutes.

2. Turn the sausages over. Place the Wattie’s frozen Chunky Original wedges around the sausages in a single layer with the red onion. Continue cooking for a further 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn oven onto a fan forced grill setting.

3. Toss the mushrooms in the olive oil. Scatter over the tomatoes and mushrooms and sprinkle over Gregg’s rubbed Rosemary. Return to the oven and grill for a further 5 -10 minutes to brown the sausages and cook the tomatoes and mushrooms.

4. Serve with a dollop of pesto if wished.

As part of their preparation for the 2021 season, Ulalei teams Pua and Fuesina took part in the Atiawa Toa Preseason tournament held over the ANZAC weekend. The Atiawa tournament is very popular attracting many teams from other netball centres around Te Whanganui-A-Tara. “It’s a really good tournament that gives you the chance to play teams from other centres, that you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to play,” says coach Karina Sagaga. Both teams won all their three round robin matches in their divisions convincingly advancing to the semi-finals. Teams Pua and Fuesina narrowly lost their respective semi-finals, ending the tournament with a win to take out 3rd place in their divisions. “With most of the players in Fuesina new to the Ulalei Club, the tournament was a good opportunity for them to bond as a team and for me to try different combinations,” says Sagaga.

Teams Fuesina and Moso’oi had their final grading games on Saturday 1 May 2021 at the Walter Nash Centre. For team Fuesina, the young team displayed some wonderful through-court straight line plays that were finished off with some accurate shooting by youngster Drew McLeod. up in a good position for a shot at goal. Johanna Schreuder also had a strong grading day displaying excellent defence at Goal Keep and shooting well at Goal Attack. The full draw of all teams will be released later this week for the first competition games this Saturday 8 May 2021 at the Walter Nash Centre, Taita.

Merge like a zip

Dog park named after Les Dalton New Wainuiomata dog park to be named after local dog advocate Les Dalton.

Les Dalton is Lower Hutt city’s best known champion of animal welfare and worked in animal control in Lower Hutt for almost 45 years.

His career began in his home suburb of Wainuiomata, advancing to become Regional Manager of Animal Control for Hutt City Council and overseeing animal control services for the entire Hutt Valley and Wellington city.

He established 35 dog exercise areas in Lower Hutt. His final project was the development of Lower Hutt’s first dedicated dog park in Wainuiomata. Les passed away in May last year before the project’s completion.

Les became a national expert and commentator on the subject of animal control as President of New Zealand Institute of Animal Management and the New Zealand Institute of Animal Control Officers. Les was also seconded by the government to establish

dog control services and staff training in Samoa.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says it is fitting that the park be named after Les. “Les Dalton’s dedication, expertise and his calm and rational approach to animal control, was exemplary,” Campbell Barry says .

“Welfare of animals and the safety of our residents were at the heart of everything Les did here at council. His passing is a loss on many levels, and it’s

fitting that he is recognised and remembered in this way.”

The naming of the dog park was decided at Council’s Communities Committee meeting earlier today.

The park features separate and fenced small and large dog areas, agility equipment, a beach and water play area and a series of challenges and experiences for a range of dog sizes, abilities and temperaments.

The Les Dalton Dog Park will be formally opened in mid-May.

People who merge like a zip are enjoying shorter and safer journeys, according to new data from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

In December last year, Waka Kotahi trialled new signs and road markings to encourage better merging behaviour at the Tawa, Churton Park and Newlands southbound on-ramps along State Highway 1 (SH1).

Data from February 2021 shows that at times either side of the morning peak, journey times have improved by up to 20 percent when passing or using each of the three interchanges.

This is despite traffic volumes being marginally heavier in 2021 than over the same period in 2020.

z When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

I unwind with a nice bottle of wine and listen to music.

There are things that are only slightly known about plants and nature such as the way plants have the ability to communicate with each other.

They also are in many ways similar to ourselves but at a different part of the tree of life. Science has proved that not only do plants communicate with each other but also they react to how we are emotionally.

For instance if in a forest of trees; if the trees on the outer rim get attacked by a disease or by pest insects then a message is sent out to the other trees, which then start making chemical defences against the invading problem.

Another example is the house plant that you care for; if monitored with an instrument like a lie detector which measures the resistance across foliage and then you the caregiver, hurt yourself miles away, then at that precise instant the plant will register a change or reaction.

Plants also create a calming atmosphere for you as their caregiver so when you go into your garden

z What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made?

I’ve bought many albums in my time on the strength of hearing one or two decent singles off them. They were so poor I actually considered returning them, record shops don’t like that for obvious reasons!

z What’s one thing on your bucket list?

I’d like to write and illustrate my own children’s book. I have plenty of ideas but never seem to have the time to work on it. z Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?

My mum, she’s one of the most resilient and hard working people I have ever known.

z Favourite programme currently watching?

I’ve just finished watching Falcon & the Winter Soldier. These new Marvel TV shows are fantastic, just as good as their movie counterparts and I’m really looking forward to Loki now. z If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

z What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Transylvania in Romania, I am a huge horror fan and visiting Bran Castle which Bram Stoker based Dracula’s Castle on was very cool. The scenery was stunning, the people were welcoming and the food was exquisite. I also love Queenstown here in NZ, the first time I visited it took my breath away!

Ulalei Netball were one of the lucky recipients of the ANZ Good Sports Netball Grant. The club received gear bags, match balls, training bibs, ball pumps and other training equipment for each of the four teams. “We are thrilled to receive this equipment from ANZ. It was difficult applying for funding for quality equipment, especially after a tough year for businesses last year. So to receive this grant from ANZ, was GOLD,” says Ulalei funding officer Karen Isaac.

Then we have the NZ Kowhai which has its foliage each year demolished by the Kowhai moth’s caterpillars.

It has learnt to live with losing all its leaves which would cause the death of many other plants.

Like plants when we have a good nutritious diet with ample minerals, vitamins etc Vitamin D from sunlight or supplements and moderate exercise with regular detoxing we have a strong immune system that works to keep us healthy.

If we have pharmaceutical props then the body relies on them rather than doing what it would do naturally and regulate to overcome the problem.

This can make us more vulnerable to invading bacteria or viruses. I read about recently that very elderly people not on any meds have survived better than their counterparts that maybe popping several meds a day.

Maybe we are similar to plants and Nature in this respect.

Now I don’t know of any other activity you can do that has the same effect as quickly.

Plants can become dependent on us as a species for their survival just in the same way that some plants need bees to pollinate them so they can produce seeds and have prodigy.

A good example is corn or maize without the help of humans they can’t reproduce. If you take a ripe cob of corn and plant it whole (after letting it dry out a bit) then when the corn germinates they are too close to each other and they fail.

But old Mrs Corn knows that we humans need her and she knows that we will separate the seeds off the cob and plant them about 100 to 150 mms apart so her children will flourish.

Plants adapt to conditions and not only do they adapt overtime but also appear to enjoy things that happen.

For instance grasses are the one plant that loves to be cut or eaten by browsing animals as it makes them stronger and lush.

Wainuiomata icon Tony Watling has written his last ode as the twilight years take their toll. The 94 year old has been forced to give up his passion and move out of the valley. Once one of the countries top tool makers Tony says he moved to Wainuiomata in the early 80’s to work for Brugger Industries.

Help at hand for indigenous biodiversity Financial support is now available to property owners wanting to protect and improve indigenous plant and animal habitats on their land.

Last year, council put aside $450,000 over three years to help landowners with activities ranging from weed and pest control through to extensive regeneration of indigenous vegetation.

The grants scheme was designed in collaboration with a range of Lower Hutt landowners.

Applications for this second round of grants are now open.

Two types of grants are available. Tier one grants of up to $1000 in value will provide materials, equipment or services for projects such as weed and

pest control.

Tier two grants of up to $20,000 are for larger scale, higher impact projects, and applications will need to have an accompanying management plan. Management plans are documents that outline the vision for the land, the project’s objectives and how these objectives will be achieved.

Applications for this funding round close on 11 June 2021.

Council Ecology and Horticulture Advisor Jonathan Frericks says a number of Lower Hutt people are already doing remarkable and important work to establish and preserve indigenous habitats on their land.

“So it’s Council’s aim to support these people in this work and encourage and

assist other landowners to take care of our native bush.”

Before European settlement, most of Lower Hutt was covered with thick forest and areas of wetland.

Despite decades of development, Lower Hutt still contains numerous natural areas providing habitats for indigenous plant and animal species, and many areas are now recovering to native bush.

Some of these sites are home to rare or threatened species or habitats. Native bush and scrub also have important functions such as water cleansing, erosion and flood reduction and sequestering carbon, an important part of reducing the country’s net carbon emissions.

Silver Lake a silver lining?

This Silver Lake deal is getting as messy as a captain’s challenge during a Super Rugby game.

The players continue to hold things up and potentially with good reason.

I thought by now, I’d sit clearly on one side of the fence on this issue but it turns out I’m still riding the picket fence.

NZ Rugby wants to secure a deal worth $387.5 million with the US investment behemoth because it needs money and Silver Lake could,

potentially, enable it to rake in some much-needed cash.

At the annual meeting in Wellington on Thursday, NZ Rugby announced a $34 million loss for 2020. This followed a loss of $7.4 million the previous year.

The players want their slice of the pie as the lone money earners for NZ Rugby.

NZ Rugby has admitted through Chairman Brent Impey that they need the cash injection to fund the

grassroots of the game.

Impey has stated the current way of doing things is broken.

NZ Rugby needs the money, so he says, to prop up the provincial unions who all agreed to accept the deal, to prop up the club game which is run on the smell of an oily rag.

Impey says they need the money to invest in Maori and Pasifika rugby, in women’s rugby which all seem like fair points.

man Rob Nichol want to be more thorough and believe that selling off 12.5 per cent of the brand forever another fair point.

The cynic in me just thinks the current crop of top players want their slice of the pie while I wonder if NZ rugby can look at themselves and wonder why the game is struggling financially, why are poor crowds so common to Super Rugby games and provincial contests so common?

The finger-pointing won’t resolve

the issue and that is that the grassroots level of the game badly needs funding.

While the professional players have a fair point, they are all products of that grassroots system.

Without it, there is no All Black jersey or juicy overseas contracts as their careers hit their twilight years.

If Silver Lake is the best deal going, then it may be just a matter of time before it is accepted - like it or not.
