The six Wadestown students, coached by Deputy Principal Nick Julian, were divided into two groups of three, a multi-choice and a problem-solving team. There were 23 teams competing at Newlands Intermediate and another 17 teams competing in a parallel competition at Hutt International Boys School (HIBS). Both sites
were answering the same questions. Continued on page 2. Pictured: Year 7 and 8 maths superstars from Wadestown School. These Wellington Mathswell gold medal winners are, from left, Joanna Weng, Sam Bennett, Tom Winfield, Sefton Mitchell, Daphne Ranta and Amelia Bahr. PHOTO: Glenise Dreaver.

Wadestown maths winners Continued fropm page 1. First up was the multi-choice team, who had to answer 30 multiple-choice questions over 20 minutes. Wadestown scored 27 out of a possible 30, topping the teams at their site. Next was the problem-solving team, who had 20 questions to answer. However, after earning only 12 points out of a possible 20, the team was concerned. “We were depressed,” they agreed. The final results were announced with a drum roll. “And the winner is……..long pause… Wadestown School.” At that stage, Joanna’s spontaneous dancing created an especially happy note. “She just got up and danced around like this,” said a teammate, showing the moves. There was an anxious wait to find out if they had scored higher than the schools at HIBS. When the results came through, that Wadestown School had won the overall competition, jubilation could be heard around Greater Wellington. The team celebrated with a trip to McDonalds. competed in their Yr 5-6 competition and finished a very pleasing fifth out of 40 teams. “Critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and perseverance are areas
we encourage at Wadestown School. So, these results were very pleasing and a recognition of the hard work both students and teacher put in.” says Nick.
Spring fling with dancing at Ngaio Spring is in the air! And what better way to celebrate its arrival than an evening of family fun at a Ceilidh. On Saturday September 7, Ngaio Union will throw its doors wide open and welcome in anyone who’s keen for an evening of dance, music and family fun, with food and drink thrown in. “It’s family friendly and non-alcoholic” says Ngaio Union Minister, Sue Brown. “You’ll be walked through all the dances by expert ‘callers’, and no previous experience is needed.” The live music comes from Celtic Plus, a Celtic band well known in Ngaio. “We’ve offered winter and spring ceilidhs for many years” says Sue. “Until now these have always been in the Town Hall. But this year, we’ve done a lot

“It’s very disappointing. I thought this was a tidy suburb.” It was Thursday. Pat Hill and her husband Harold, of Paparangi, had just come back from their daily walk. They’d earlier noticed litter about, so took a bag to pick up what they found. And in one block, on one side of the street, they picked up enough to fill a recycling-sized bag. By the time they finished their walk, it took both of them to heft it home. That was even though they left quite a length of carpet behind. “I never dreamt there would be this much,” says Pat, adding that the surprise was because, on the surface, when you’re driving past, their suburb looks clean and tidy. “It’s only when you start looking, especially along the hedges, that you find the rubbish,” she says. Harold adds that people do need to secure the lids of their bins and make sure they’re not facing into the wind. “Because it goes everywhere.” And while the council does do sweeping “… and good on them for that!” says Pat, Harold points out that where cars are parked, the machine can’t get to the gutter and pockets of rubbish will always remain. Now Pat’s on a mission. “I know I’ve got a head of steam up on this. I’m actually shocked. “But if we all get out and keep the front of our homes clear of the rubbish that gets dropped, and clear the berm as well, it will make a big difference. It’s up to us.”
Water tanks for sale Emergency water tanks of 200L capacity will be on sale outside Churton Park New World from 11am to 1pm on Saturday September 14. Northern Ward Takapu city councillors (who have to remain unnamed at this stage of pre-election fervour of course) will be running a BBQ and selling the tanks, which can be pre-ordered and pre-paid if you’d like to reserve a tank Email malcolm.sparrow@wcc.govt.nz to order one at $115 each. Mention your school or church in the northern suburbs in your email and $10 will be donated to them from your water tank purchase.

Wellington Police were frustrated by the number of motorists using cellphones while driving in central Wellington on Monday. Between 2.30pm to 5.30pm, infringement notices were issued to 102 drivers. A police spokesperson says this checkpoint was undertaken during peak travel time, on a main route through Wellington CBD and in close proximity to major intersections, adding that a large number of the drivers caught said they were using social media apps such as Facebook and Twitter.

inbrief news No toll on Transmission Gully
Public art for Waitohi
The NZ Transport Agency has announced that the Transmission Gully motorway will not be tolled An NZTA spokesperson says their assessment has indicated that the net potential revenue over the lifetime of the toll was unlikely to make a meaningful contribution to the cost of the road. It also showed, he said, that tolling the road would probably result in more drivers choosing to use the coastal route, the current State Highway 1, which would compromise the safety, environmental and access benefits of the new road.
Beautiful and clever On Saturday September 14, The Tudor Consort, in Patterns of Time, is to present some of the most beautiful and clever music ever composed says director Michael Stewart. He explains that counterpoint, different voices weaving together, is a fundamental element of music. “Throughout history, composers have been trying to outdo each other with complex canons and patterns to show off their learning.” The level of national interest in this concert means it will be recorded for future broadcast by Radio New Zealand. Tickets ($30/25) can be booked at http://www.tudor-consort.org.nz/ for the concert in the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul on Saturday September 14 at 7.30pm, with a pre-concert talk at 7pm.
Māori Language Week Māori Language Week kicks off on Monday with a parade in the CBD, then a week of events, activities and exhibitions to celebrate te reo Māori. The theme is Kia Kaha te Reo Māori | Let’s make the Māori language strong. There will also be light projections with three key buildings acting as canvasses for te Reo Māori phrases to encourage the public to learn, practice, and spark a conversation. The projections will run for three hours from about 6pm, once it’s dark, at Te Papa and the railway station on September 9-13, and the Embassy Cinema, 9-11, and September 13-14. The parade, Te Wiki o te Ro Māori Parade will move from Parliament Grounds to Te Ngākau Civic Square.
Matthew McIntyre-Wilson - art commisioned for Waitohi Hub. PHOTO: Amber-Jayne Bain
Wellington City Council has commissioned Wellington artist Matthew McIntyreWilson to create a permanent public art installation outside the main entrance to the new Waitohi - Johnsonville Community Hub. It is expected to be installed this month, and it reflects the area’s significant Maori heritage incorporating sculptural elements into eight vertical timber posts, or “fins”. The mauri stone for Waitohi is also located in this entrance area, laid to maintain the positive life force and purpose of the building. The council’s public art panel and iwi representatives invited artists to submit a proposal. They asked for designs based on criteria such as the cultural significance of the site and context, artistic merit
and quality, integrating well with the architecture of the new building. Maintenance and durability of the artwork, and the artist’s proven ability to deliver the project successfully, were also vital criteria. Matthew, who was awarded the commission, has designed, developed and produced the artwork and will be installing it in collaboration with the council’s Waitohi project team and Athfield Architects, who designed the hub. Matthew is a weaver and an accessory designer with designs inspired by traditional Maori artefacts to create woven geometric patterns. His work has been exhibited in galleries across Wellington, Auckland, and at the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver, Canada.
A voice for women on world stage Police Senior Sergeant Claire Bibby of Glenside. In that role is a finalist in the Public Policy category of New Zealand’s Women of Influence Awards. There are ten categories, the winners to be announced on October 24. Claire says her job means she is influencing the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 Women, Peace and Security, both here in New Zealand and internationally. “The resolution calls for leadership to hear women’s voice equally with men in discussions relating to peace and security on the home front and globally,” she said. She has presented at con-
ferences in Thailand and Jordan and recently received the Australasian Council of Women and Policing award for her research to improve law enforcement for women. In Jordan, she spoke about her work as a community volunteer, demonstrating the different ways our community communicates with religious leaders, mana whenua, local government and politicians.” Her experiences policing in Ruatoria in the mid-eighties, and in the Solomon Islands post conflict, means she appreciates the strength and bravery of communities, “men and women”, striving to maintain the law and secure peace during extreme violence.

New Outer Green Belt plan Wellington City Council has approved a new Outer Green Belt management plan for the 3000 hectares of reserves along the ridges separating the city’s urban and rural areas. One key element is to complete the Skyline Track to create a continuous route from the rugged South Coast right through to the Porirua City boundary in the north. Councillor Peter Gilberd says the reserves are part of what makes Wellington a city where
people want to live and where the natural environment thrives both for its own sake and to support the growing city. He says the green belt offers many different outdoor experiences, with a rich and diverse ecology on a scale rarely seen so close to a major city. The updated plan comes after more than two years of work by the council to review the 2004 plan, which Peter says meant getting as many people involved as possible.

Onslow College students Asylvia Redgrave and Elizabeth Nahu, both Year 13, have already made a name for themselves in the world of New Zealand literature. The two have, within a week, just won two quite separate awards. A lover of Russian literature, Asylvia has taken out the Katherine Mansfield short story award and a $500 prize, with The Log-Woman, a mystical story of rape, vengeance and justice set in Russia. It was judged as a very original piece of
writing, one judge remarking that it really did stay in their mind for a long time. Elizabeth was runner-up the Victoria University National Schools Poetry Award with a poem, Te Po, celebrating the night and stargazing. Both are year 13 students, though Asylvia has not student English this year, having completed the Year 13 requirements in Year 11. She loves history and despite her love of language, she may not even study literature at university. “Though I hope to become a reporter,” she adds.
Elizabeth’s poem includes a beautiful combination of both Maori and English, and has layers of meaning blended in. “Really powerful combinations!” says her English teacher Tina Manker, the person who persuaded her to enter the contest. Elizabeth’s portfolio poem exceeded the word limit however, being in four parts and she didn’t want to break them up. So she wrote Te Po over the last holidays, which draws from her experiences at night, outside, on her auntie’s Waikato farm. “I feel so very comfortable there,” she says.

Obituary
Jeremy Bloomfield,
DON’T MISS OUT
April 29 1957 – August 18, 2019 Jeremy Bloomfield, best-known in this area for his dedicated work as the co-ordinator of Predator-free Ngaio, died suddenly on Sunday August 18. Jeremy was also well-known nationwide, for his work at Accent Learning Vic Link, Victoria University. This saw him introduce Kiva, the anti-bullying programme for New Zealand schools. He loved being a part of the Ngaio community, and in the name of conservation could frequently be found barberry bashing in the Bell’s Track area. Tennis at the Khandallah Tennis Club, tramping and biking with family and friends were also great interests, and he was a good friend of the Baha’I community. Those close to Jeremy have drawn comfort from the fact that shortly before his death, he had commented to friends that it was important to “live the dash”. He was referring to the dash between the dates of birth and death, put on headstones and in obituaries, and there is no doubt in any of their minds that he had certainly done this. Due to the combination of Jeremy’s sudden death and good all-round health, he was able to be an organ donor. Five other people have now had their lives changed forever owing to his generosity, and that of his family who gave the necessary permissions. Chris says she and the family are grateful

Tai Chi classes support Neurological Foundation By Brian Sheppard
Janet Chew, from Churton Park, is a tai chi instructor who freely shares her skills for the benefit of others. She lives for this ancient Chinese exercise and is always eager to show how it helps anyone, regardless of age or state of health. Two of her morning classes are held at the Churton Park Community Centre. These are amongst Janet’s many unpaid volunteer contributions. For the past few years, she has asked her students for gold coin donations, to pay for the use of the hall and to build up funds for a worthy charity. With the agreement of her classes, this money is paid to the Neurological Foundation, resulting in donations of about $900 per year. On August 22, Margie Carter, donor relations manager for the Neurological Foundation, visited a class to
express the foundation’s thanks for the help that these donations provide. Margie explained that the foundation is a charitable trust that raises funds to ensure that our top neuroscientists can continue their leading-edge research. The aim is to progress research that will one day greatly reduce the level of suffering and premature death from trauma and diseases of the brain and nervous system. Margie stressed that these disorders are brutal and uncompromising. She added that, with the rapid growth of New Zealand’s ageing population, an epidemic of neurodegenerative disorders is predicted in the coming decades. It’s so good to know that, through Janet, the contribution of tai chi to the health of her students is also increasing awareness and support for neurological research. For further information about the Neurological Foundation, check out the website neurological.org.nz

The Cancer Society reminds us that one in three New Zealanders are affected by cancer. This means that amongst our families and friends, we will each know of at least one person who has, or has had, cancer. It’s a frightening disease and so it’s comforting to know that the Cancer Societ y is on ha nd to offer advice and help when it’s most needed. The Cancer Society supports vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of
all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, education and awareness campaigns. On August 30 each year it organises Daffodil Day, in which volunteers around the country take to the streets to collect money to allow it to do its work. The ANZ, as the society’s main sponsor, had an eye-catching Daffodil Day raffle stall in its Johnsonville branch, where customers could make their donations, and be reminded of the important work of the Cancer Society.

The Garden Tool Store owners Bryan Innes and Joanna Pearsall encourage home gardeners and are happy to see people creating paradise: growing food, flowers, functional forests and participating in community gardens and farmers markets. They understand that gardeners are proud of their work and love to use quality tools. Bronze tools from Austria, inspired by
Viktor Schauberger and Rudolph Steiner, are popular, especially as they have a lifetime guarantee, are good for the soil, look beautiful, don’t rust and make great gifts. The Garden Tool Store also stocks Austrian scythes, Broadforks made in NZ, rakes and sickles from Italy and a new range of quality Japanese gardening and pruning tools.
Groundplanz - time to prepare for summer living Spring is here; the days are getting longer and warmer, and blossoms are bursting forth. Now is the ideal time to renovate your tired old lawn to control the moss and weeds and fill in those bare patches, or even completely relay your lawn ready for summer days. Where good lawn just won’t grow, consider other surfacing such as pavers or planting, to let you get most pleasure from your garden. Now is also the time to organise any earthworks needed to re-shape your garden, retain any unstable ground, or fix drainage problems in the golden period between wet and dry
seasons. There is still time to replant the scars and get good growth before summer comes. If your entertainment areas need upgrading before the family comes for Christmas, book our services now. We can develop attractive and comfortable outdoor areas to suit your lifestyle dreams, but quality work does take time! Groundplanz provides professional landscape design and construction services. Our focus is on providing the right solutions for your needs and the environment you live in – solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. www.groundplanz.co.nz

LIVING
Spring gardening By Dwyllis Maggs Spring is here but don’t be in a rush to get your seedlings into the ground. The ground still has to warm up and Spring weather can be unsettled. If you can’t wait to start sowing try fast-growing radishes, turnips and lettuces in pots. Pots are warmer than your garden bed and will drain better (but you have to water more). You can also move them into a sheltered area. Check that your autumn sown brassicas are watered and fed. As the soil warms they will put on a growth spurt. You still have time to plant some early po-
tatoes for Christmas. I usually grow Jersey Benne and Kowiniwini (120 days) but for a change this year I’ll be sowing Cliff Kidney (60-90 days), Moemoe 120-130 days and Whataroa 120 days. My garden isn’t very big and potatoes take up a lot of space so to make it worthwhile I grow varieties you don’t usually find in the supermarket. If you are really challenged for space then you can grow them in buckets or amongst your flowers. Just remember they like a slightly acid soil. Once the potato plants are well established, water regularly for good yield and quality. Stop watering after plants have flowered.
Sprouting success Sick of winter soups? Craving something fresh? While you wait for your salad greens to flourish get your sprout jar out. If it’s your first time sprouting then why not buy a sprouting kit. These can be bought online or try your local organic shop. A kit will usually include a large glass jar, a lid with a mesh insert and some organic seeds to sprout. You can also just buy the lids if you already have the seeds and a jar. Your kit will come with instructions or you can find a youTube video (there are also some good books!). Put a tablespoon of seed into the jar and fill it to half way with cold water. Leave it to
sit for 10 minutes but you can miss this step if you are short of time. Screw the mesh lid on tight and drain most of the water out. Leave a very small amount of water in the jar so you can swirl the seeds around the sides of the jars. This way more seeds will sprout. Drain remaining water off. Then leave the jar on its side in a shady spot on the bench. Remember to rinse your seeds morning and night so they don’t dry out. It takes about a week before you have sprouts. When ready take them out of the jar and put them in an airtight tub in the fridge. This frees up your jar so you can get another crop underway.

Four Flat Whites in Italy
By Brian Sheppard
On August 30, it was the opening night for Roger Hall’s comedy play Four Flat Whites in Italy at the Newlands Community Centre and the New Players presented it flawlessly, as was fitting for such a well-loved play. Director Ross Jordan, otherwise known in his day job as owner-manager of Newlands New World says: “I’ve always enjoyed bringing Roger Hall’s comedies to the stage. “This is my second production of Four
Flat Whites in Italy and, although attitudes and society have moved on since the play was first written, the humour is still as fresh and laugh-out-funny now as it was then.” “The great thing about his writing is that it’s accessible to everyone. We can all recognise a little bit of ourselves in his characters.” The audience certainly agreed and were still chuckling as they left the theatre. Four Flat Whites in Italy is open until September 7.

Cashmere Heights Home men’s group tackles first project Cashmere Heights Home’s men’s group has started its first project. The Johnsonville-based home has been donated two bird feeders and a weta hotel built by students at Onslow College. Residents Arthur Barclay and Frans Ettema took advantage of a sunny afternoon recently to sand one of the bird feeders ready to be painted. Once the items are ready the group will decide what outdoor area will be most suitable for each one to go on display, Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights recreation team leader Linda Lankshear says. There are also some kitset bird feeders that the men’s group will assemble before joining with the neighbouring Cashmere Home men’s group to paint them. The Cashmere Heights Home men’s group was established this year as more than 40 per cent of the residents there are male. Linda says it provides another opportunity for residents to socialise and involve themselves in activities similar to what they would have done prior to moving into the home. So far meetings have included talking about interests and hobbies, and a trip to the Southward Car Museum in Paraparaumu. “It started fortnightly but it was so popular that it’s become weekly,” Linda says of the group’s meetings. Ideas for future activities have mainly come from the residents, Linda says. Other outings planned include taking the train to Waikanae, visiting the Museum

This is the summer of Ben Stokes It’s been one of those English summers hasn’t it? I say that knowing full well they probably have not had one this good in their history. And it’s all thanks to a Kiwi in Ben Stokes. That’s a slight right jab at our friends from the motherland but this has been the summer of Stokes.
While they didn’t win the Cricket World Cup - they didn’t, they didn’t, they didn’t, it was Stokes who got them to the tie. Who would have thought the man born in Christchurch could top that feat within a matter of two months but that’s what he did with his unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes test last week. Yes, he had help from a stub-
born No 11 Jack Leach and another terrible missed decision from Joel Wilson to achieve one of the most dramatic test wins in recent memory, but it was deserved. It seems like no matter how poorly the English play, no matter the injury to James Anderson, the poor form from captain Joe Root or the out of this world bat-
ting from his Aussie counterpart Steve Smith, it seems 2019 was and is destined to be one for the English. The cricketing Gods seem determined to give them and their fans all their hearts desire. I will freely admit, I’m still a little sour on the World Cup “loss” and I use that term as loosely as possible but at least
now the Aussie’s know a similar pain. It appears only Smith stands between the English and the most stunning Ashes win since 2005 and as amazing as that series was 14 years ago, the 2019 edition is already close to eclipsing it. There will be more sleepless nights to come watching this series and it will be worth it.
Kaukau challenge goes Wellington wide Khandallah resident Toni Shanks is leading the charge when it comes to keeping her family active and inspiring others to do the same. Since setting up the Kaukau100 challenge in January 2018, Toni has inspired over 180 members of the local community to join her in climbing Mount Kaukau 100 times in a year, or setting their own `goal climbs’. At 445m above sea level, Mount Kaukau is the most visible point in Wellington’s landscape. Rated medium-hard, this walk is not for the faint-hearted. For Toni, this was just the challenge she needed when she decided to pledge $1 to Healthy Futures for every climb she completed over 2018. “I wanted to make myself accountable, and by putting it out there on Facebook to my family and friends, I knew I couldn’t back out,” says Toni. “But nothing prepared me for the overwhelming response I received! “The best part is that families are staying active together when before they would have stayed at home. “In total, $2000 was donated to Healthy Futures over 2018. “Now, it’s no longer about making a donation, it’s about keeping our families active, spending time together as a community and making new friends along the way.” Following the success of the Kaukau100, Healthy Futures has created Healthy Steps to encourage others to get the movement going in other suburbs in Wellington. Healthy Futures is a Wellington-based charitable trust run by industry professionals.
Kaukau100 group members, Susan Gardiner, Cassandra Brandeis, Jane Hudson and Julie Cederman on a recent Mt Kaukau expdition. PHOTO supplied.
They support health promotion activities by working together with local schools, councils, and government to provide solutions and make healthy choices easier. Healthy Futures’ executive officer, Tess Clarke says: “Healthy Steps fulfils our aim of connecting, encouraging and supporting communities to be active and strive towards a healthier future. “Healthy Steps is accessible to anyone of any age or fitness level. It’s a free, fun and social way for the whole family to engage in regular activity.” If you have an activity or exercise goal that you would like to achieve and share with others, or if you are interested in joining an existing group, visit www.healthyfutures.org.nz
More cyclists recorded in Wellington Count data shows more people than ever riding in to the central Wellington from every direction during the busy morning peak. A Wellington City Council spokesperson says the cordon count monitors how people travel into the city between 7am and 9am and has been done over a week in March every year since 2000. The numbers over the busiest two hours in the morning have tripled from under 800 per day 19 years ago to over 2300 people. The trend is backed up by data coming through from new electronic counters that have been gradually installed around the city over the last year. The spokesperson also says that there is
another positive shift with more than half of Wellingtonians opting to take a bus or train, or walk or ride with the proportion, and numbers, coming by car during this two-hour period declining. There are about 700 more commuters travelling along Thorndon Quay in the morning peak than 19 years ago, but now only 38 percent are in cars compared with 57 percent in 2000. Numbers travelling by bus through there have gone up from 37 to 50 percent, and there is a big jump in the proportion biking, up from 3 to 10 percent. Data from the electronic bike counters that have been in for over a year show a significant upward trend even during cooler months of the year.
